@Wise: I know this is a long way away, but thought I would mention this, as this was an important hurdle that my paladins had to deal with: In the Candlekeep Crypts, the hallway leading to the crypt leading to the Strength tome is not only a lightning bolt trap, but is a repeating trap! Therefore, whoever you send to fight the phase spiders and get the tome will not only need to be protected from lightning going past the trap to get the tome, but also on the way back. Note also that it's possible, but tricky to slip past the trap without setting it off - I've hugged the bottom portion of the hallway to do this, but if you misclick, yikes! There's also a web trap just before the spiders - free action items or a freedom potion is what you need before tripping it of course...

I’ve decided to continue south along the coast unless I hear otherwise or sense my Queen leading me elsewhere. In this case, I returned to the Lighthouse which is the same place my Queen led me when she wanted me to add Safana to my entourage. However, I expect that the only real value to this place was when Safana urged that we explore the pirate treasure cave right after we found her. There was nothing here on this trip. We killed about 20 Tasloi & a pack of Worgs for which some old bag paid me 60 gold.
Key Event: The low-threat environment gave me the chance to see my subordinates in action. I had a conference w/them & we discussed actions on the objective & actions on contact. I ran in to a decent sized band of Hobgoblins, maybe 15, from the Skull Smasher Tribe. Nothing tough here just a chance to watch my subordinates spread out against a foe that was firing poisoned arrows behind a group of foot soldiers. Quayle cast a Mirror Image before switching to Blindness which he started using on the ‘Bow-Goblins’. Viconia cast Hold Person in the middle of the tribe & sent about four of them into ‘la-la’ land & I followed that w/Horror which added to the Hobgoblin confusion. Meanwhile, Shar-Teel & Kagain were doing what they do & Safana was firing off Darts. I like this tactic so when we’re fighting something that can kick-butt they’ll all know what to do on contact.

Thanks for the advice Corey.
I think that perhaps this is the first time that I have done that area without a thief.
What strength do you need to open the chests down there?
Silke didn't get a chance to cast a spell before being killed, unlike the mage at the cloakwood carnival who cast horror which affected all but two of my party. Isra shouted which negated the spell and we then killed him.
Mulahey was also unable to cast a spell before his demise.
The assassin Nimbul was only able to cast defensive spells. We stripped him of his defences and an Amnish soldier killed him.
We will soon start searching for the bandit camp. However, first we went hunting Ankheg. Whilst there we met Ajantis who joined us
We have main for one of the shells to be made into armour. We will therefore do trivial tasks until it is ready.

Grimwald, it's possible that you won't be able to open those chests and get the tomes without a thief. Your best bet would be to buy the violet potion at the Nashkel Carnival (the one that set your STR to 25 and your DEX and CON to 3 for 24 hours), but even then I'm not sure it will be enough.... Let me know if you're going to try this. I'm interested.
My "solo" Undead Hunter had Imoen join for a few moments, only for thieving purposes (some pickpocketing in BG City and the locks in the Candlekeep Crypts). I don't want to miss out on really good stuff. I want my Undead Hunter to become a powerhouse. ![]()

@Wise: You just need a Storm Giant Potion (STR=24) - that is sufficient to open all the crypts in Candlekeep. Note that it's just BARELY enough for the Strength tome - you may need to keep trying till it works - of course if you DUHM for that crypt it will open right up. I know with STR 24 Grond0 tried like 20 times one time before it opened. Incidentally, I have done this many times (using Storm giant potion to open crypts) so I'm sure this is what you need.

Now with access to Chaotic Commands, it was time to battle some Greater Doppelgangers in DT. CC was for my tank, Branwen, because those 'improved' Doppelgangers cause Confusion on their hits (on a failed save). They can also cast Horror and Dire Charm. Remove Fear lasts quite a while, so with that on and the Helmet of Charm Protection on Minsc, I can now have two characters (relatively) safely fighting these doppelgangers, as long as Minsc stays back (using bow or halberd) and does not get hit. The three in the library room were killed with ease. Of course, it helped that Dynaheir first threw a Skull Trap in there...

Buffs were still up after that fight, so I took on the two outside that we had earlier avoided:

As you can see, I brought in Coran here to dispel Mirror Images. He did get a Dire Charm throw at him, but elves have 90% charm resistance in my setup, so he was OK.
Four Warders battle
I buffed Coran with several spells and potions:

Take note of his hitpoints, that's about twice as many as he normally has (Fortitute potion at work).
He started off by backstabbing Fear, then ran around the corner. After another backstab, he duked it out with Fear in melee. Fear has fast regeneration, so repeated backstabbing sometimes is not damaging him fast enough.
Coran needed some greater healers, but did a good number on Fear. Then all of a sudden, Avarice was right among my other characters! I have no idea how he found them or how he got there. Luckily, some of his backstabs weren't exactly fearsome:

I had summoned some monsters, mostly so they could surround Avarice so he would not be able to move around freely. It's hard to fight on two fronts at the same time, so I was relieved to see that Coran had now been succesful in his fight. I brought him back to break the invisibility that Avarice is so fond of. That done, he also delivered in the fight:

I think I was lucky that he never released another Cloudkill. I think it was due very soon, and that may well have been very dangerous for Coran (he's not high enough in level to be safe from insta-Cloudkill).
Love and Pride were no problems for him. Backstab-hide-backstab, etc.
Moved ne'er by rage and ne'er by anger, cold is the trait'rous doppelganger.
As a new player, the Great Many Doors level was quite intimidating for me, but now I have grown to like it a lot. It often plays out a little differently each time.
I had planned to let Coran keep going now that he was so buffed, but his most important buffs ran out before we met the next enemy, so I just did some looting here. I was suprised that Imoen could not detect the trap on the container in the first room even with 80% in Detect Traps. I gave her a perception potion. Imoen being a level 11 Thief provides some nice perks - improved traps (and 3 in total) and more experience for using her skills. It's still very little compared to what you get in BG2, but it adds up nicely:

Isle of Balduran
Time for this little expedition instead. Minsc was the main force against the sirines, helped by a large mob of skeletons. Imoen was scouting so I could direct the skeletons better. She failed at hiding at one time, and things got a little complicated:

No real trouble, since I could direct the skeletons away from attacking her. She slashed a couple of them to bone piles, though.
Nice loot here: five pearls, a pearl necklace, a greenstone amulet (4 charges) and 58 arrows of biting.
Imoen took her time, backstabbing her way up through the ship, luring vampiric wolves outside to my waiting party (Branwen, with ring of free action, as tank). Daese was the only one following her down from the top floor. Imoen received CC and arrows of ice to battle her. Went really well, as Daese's Stoneskins were stripped by the many arrow hits. Then it was backstab time. At first, I was surprised to see Daese survive a 76 point backstab when she was at Near Death. Ah, she must be killed as a beast as well.
Daese's death made Glasya level up to 10. Pretty decent first level 5 pick (see below).
Karoug was the next to follow downstairs. Coran took over the backstabbing, using Werebane, the silver dagger. Neither of my thieves is proficient with daggers, but Coran has much higher STR (Gauntlets of Ogre Power) so he hits better than Imoen does. It took only four backstabs:

Imoen used several houses in the village as hiding spots, so she could backstab werewolves like there was no tomorrow. She had to go back to the party twice to drink some potions. I used both my regeneration potions when she was really hurt. I like them for situations like this, when there is some waiting involved in the fights. They are far too slow to use in a regular fight anyway.
Werewolves respawn often at this stage, especially in the area between the large houses and the escape building. Imoen killed about 50 or so...
Back in UB, we rested, then lured Mendas outside (foiling his first spell). Strangely enough, he ran away from view and returned as a Loup Garou. Minsc was dual wielding the two bastard swords that can hurt these critters (he did the same against Kaishas back on the island). Branwen tanked, and Coran moved in for a backstab with Werebane:

No problems with Selaad, much more problems with the Bareshes. Yes, in plural. In my install, this guy is bugged as heck, with a tendency to respawn in the same spot several times. I think I killed five (!) of them. At one time, there were three of them with their circles right on top of each other. Coran got too close and was killed in one round. Branwen's painful tanking here took a large toll on our greater healers. I used up almost half of my entire supply. Dynaheir went inside to give Branwen a few more potions, and was actually quite succesful with Magic Missiles. Baresh has migh MR, but some missiles got through.
While we licked wounds and sorted through loot, yet another Baresh spawned. He got the CTRL-Y treatment. I though that was fully justified here.

Branwen, level 9, 71+5 HP
Minsc, level 8, 63 HP

I had exactly the same experience there as well with my latest setup. I think *Improved Balduran's Isle: v21* should be blamed here as i hadn't that problem before (without that component installed). Don't know if it's *cured* in later versions of SCS.

Yes, but there's another issue - Loup Garou werewolf creatures can't be harmed by "anti-werewolf" weapons. This is easilly fixable, but if you don't tinker about it with an editor you'll have to kill those few with magic.

That respawning looks nasty. I haven't done the Werewolf Island or Durlag's Tower in years. I recollect having difficulty with Loup Garou even in vanilla with my best fighters... The idea of facing respawing improved SCS variants makes me shudder lol...

@Jianson
The extra spawns might have made it more difficult, but think of the extra experience! (Assuming that you haven't reached the experience cap)
We have now got the ankheg armour so are about to head for the bandit camp.
We had the first casualty for ages when Isra was fighting the red wizards. I had sent Valiant to heal her. All the mages were dead, but the acid arrow continued its work.
Not wealthy through having to equip six, therefore a bit painful.
Whilst waiting for the armour, I used the "rod of terror" and "Lord Foreshadow's Ring" combination to boost all the original four to a charisma of 25. Miscalculation meant that I had to use the tome for one of them.

Yeah, I know. The Baresh Loup Garou are worth 1800 each. But because of the danger, I would prefer killing 3 more Ghasts instead, though.

We used brains to get into the camp and brains to kill Tazok. Ajantis used oil of speed and attacked with bow and acid arrows. The rest of us moved away out of sight. Ajantis used his speed to keep away from Tazok whilst making him into a pin cushion. Eventually he expired and we got some good armour and bracers. Headed just north of Beregost and took on an ogre. Killed him and shared the loot. Valiant put on one of the belts and now looks MOST attractive. Surprisingly, his armour has also altered to fit his changed proportions. ![]()
We then went to deal with Tranzig. I agreed to spare him, but sadly for him a sword was already on its way to finish him off.
We will now return to the bandit camp.
Edit
After clearing the camp with the aid of a few potions, Valiant opened Tazok's chest. It is well that he was healthy or I would have had to fork out for another resurrection.
Afterwards we rested and we were all in good health again. We have now entered Cloakwood and we will see just how dangerous it is.
Edit 2
We found out that it was indeed dangerous. We were ambushed by wyverns which fortunately we were able to defeat. We took their tails back to the temple thinking to get a reward, but sadly none was forthcoming. However, at the temple we were asked to help Restenford and we have just now ended up there.

Why this character? Well, I have been impressed by how well Branwen has stood up to various melee baddies in my Sorceress' run, and I understand the use of most of the cleric spells. A Cleric has the HP and the AC to do well in BG1 fighting, and gets some good summons as well as useful spells. I wanted her Neutral to be immune to both Unholy Blight and Holy Smite (and get access to both). Elf for the extra DEX and the high sleep/charm resists. I was thinking about dwarf/halfling/gnome for good spell saves, but I did not want to miss out on any DEX or WIS. Yeah, and I am terrified of getting charmed, so I want the chance to be saved in case I screw up.
Never tried a kitted cleric either. Free True Sight seems just great, both that I get it from the start and it frees up a level 5 spell slot later in some fights. The Seeking Sword has been very nice this far, especially against swarms of enemies she can kill in one hit (like xvarts). 3 apr kicks butt.
To avoid meeting the same fate as her predecessor, she travelled to Beregost via the High Hedge map instead. Got waylaid by three Ghouls and my first reaction was to flee. "Wait a minute, ghouls are slow, these buggers are easy 525 experience!"
Tuwiel is now level 4. She's been doing some easy quests in and around FAI and Beregost. Passed Tarnesh under Sanctuary every time. She wears plate mail (from the FF patrol N Beregost) and large shield, and is proficient with sling, war hammer and sword/shield style.
Tuwiel plans to get the 'evil' Bhaal power in all six chapter transitions because they seem far more useful for her.
XP cap is removed, and I will shamelessly take full advantage. I will probably need to skip some parts of BG1, but reaching level 14 shouldn't be unreasonable (1.35M XP). That would be awesome.
That said, I have doubts that maybe I am not going to enjoy being solo. Seems lonely. But it's worth trying, I suppose.
I know about the charm trap in the Durlag's Tower chapel room, and that the bandit camp tent chest is protected by a lightning trap. Traps that are on the floor and that disappear when they go off will probably not be a problem. I can detect them with Find Traps and set them off with summoned skeletons. It's those on containers and the ones that remain even when triggered (and apart from a few, I know very little which traps they are!) that scare me.
Anything else I should think of that is of special interest for solo play?

There's a few items that make a huge difference for my solo characters, probably for you as well:
1) Greenstone amulet (Ulgoth's Beard Tavern) - when buff activates immune to hold, confusion, and CHARM (other things too, like sleep and fear)- you might find useful. You can even sell and recharge though a bit pricey to do so.
2) Necklace of missiles (Nashkel Carnival tent) - helpful for enemy parties or mass of skeletons/kobolds etc.
3) Scroll of protection from petrification (Carnival) - lets you do the basilisk map safely
4) Boots of avoidance/boots of grounding - these get used a lot depending on what you are facing
5) If using BG 2 engine - Shield Amulet (Carnival) - this combined with greenstone amulet (or resist fear since you are a cleric) makes taking out Tarnesh child's play.
This enough to get you started?

After unloading loot & resting a bit in Beregost, I continued my trek southward along the coast and explored the Archaeological Site that is just north or Bear River. I had the thrill of running into a small band of Gnolls, maybe 20 of them but there was a Chieftain & a Flind w/them. I just beat them mercilessly into the turf and then offered their carcasses to Malcanthet using loose stones I found as a makeshift alter.

GNOLL CHIEFTAIN, GNOLL ELITES, GNOLL VETERAN'S
DEAD GNOLL'S TO BE SACRIFICED ON A MAKESHIFT ALTER
Key Event: We’d heard in Nashkel when we visited the Nalin @ the Temple of Helm about some captain of their guard that was wanted for heinous deeds. Imagine my luck in finding him knee deep in devastated caravan. He plied me w/some riddle that I easily answered & then pummeled him anyway. Viconia cast Hold Person, I think, & I used Horror, & that messed him up & sent him wandering aimlessly. He had a woman there defending him, said she was of his blood or something. She panicked & Shar-Teel & Kagain ran her down while I chased this Brage into the Archaeological Site where I killed him. He ended up having a cursed Two-Handed Sword +3 but b/c of the curse it only brought me 500 gold.

PICKIN' UP A BOUNTY
I questioned the archaeologist but obviously he didn’t like my responses. He tried to turn his workmen on me so I just murdered them all. I kinda wished I’d have been able to get in the excavation as I figure there might have been some enchanted items or treasure in there. Guess I’ll never know…but neither will Charleston Nib.
After a run-in w/a mouthy Hobgoblin w/some Kobold Commandos, I took the body of Brage to the fat guy @ Nashkel who mistakingly gave me 250 gold that was due some bounty hunter. He was a little pissed but finally gave mw gold for Brage’s body. Then it was time to cash in my loot, rest & get ready ro head back to Bear River. Unfortunately, I can’t use the Nashkel Store b/c, Safana when she was first learning to pickpocket tried to pickpocket the proprietor & messed it up.

If you want to farm basilisks, use an additional Pro Poision scroll, they'll attack you in melee with posion bites if you're immune to pertification. An alternative is to stay hidden/invisible and use skeletons if you have them, which are completely immune to basilisk treats. Personally, I prefer killing Ankhegs for fast XP.
Charm will kill you if succesfull. So, either get Greenstone/Charm protection helm (I can buy one in my game in Beregost), or wait level 9 before tackling clerics/mages so you have CC. Elven resistance to Charm doesn't work against Domination type spells and similar effects.
Ring of Free action can be aquired early (kill Dushai), and it makes you immune to a whole lotta nasty stuff, so wear it.

Good point about the ability to fire bomb things. I will surely spend some early money on blasting potions (Explosions, Fiery Burning). I know that both Thalantyr and the potion merchant in the carnival have some.

So unless I am protected, getting hit by Mental Domination will require me to make a save (penalized, at that!)? Yikes.
No charm protection helm for sale in my setup, but there is at least one to be found somewhere.
I am not sure I am ready to fight ankhegs or even Dushai yet (I don't know her spellbook). Can't ankhegs do over 20 damage on a failed save?
Tuwiel has made some more progress, but she has been forced to flee from Bassilus twice. (She wants his hammer so much!) She said the wrong things, so the undead are still around, and hostile. Bummer. Their number has been reduced, though. The mob advanced even when Tuwiel was in Sanctuary. She had bought a fiery oil, but she had to use an oil of speed first to gain enough distance to throw it:

Problem is, I am too poor now to buy more of these...
I then made for the map edge and tried to throw a Silence at Bassilus, but he released a Hold Person before I was finished, so I left the map.
I had levelled up to 5 (thanks to a duo of Dead Wolves, my favourite enemy in the game when it comes to 'XP per unit effort/danger') so I returned with Glyph of Warding ready. I only managed to damage a zombie 11 points with it. That did bring the zombie to me (the skeletons seem to not want to chase much) so that one got killed in melee. History repeated itself, another Hold Person thrown at me and I left the map again. Maybe I should use my Freedom potion I have bought in the carnival? I wonder what spell he will open with in that case.
I don't think summoning skeletons against him is a good idea. He'll probably will just win them over...
Do you know if his skellies count as being evil? If yes, Holy Smite should clear out some of them nicely.

No charm protection helm for sale in my setup, but there is at least one to be found somewhere.
I found mine on Undercity party so you better not count on that much - it's 28 tier item so there are only two places before Big City where you could get it.
I wonder what spell he will open with in that case.
Could be Rigid Thinking so watch out.
In any case, all the best with your solo run - Priest of Helm is great char.

The mad cleric is down. This was a fortunate spell result:

Bassilus ran after Tuwiel. The undead seemed to at least not be close to him. Tuwiel cast Doom the following round, kept running back, then tried Hold Person three times. Last try, it stuck:

The yellow hammer is now mine! He also dropped a Shield Amulet (5 charges).
After this, Tuwiel went basilisk hunting. Mutamin was touched by Korax and slain, as were all the basilisks (I think...). Korax turned hostile when he was trailing far behind Tuwiel and her skeletons. This was good, so he couldn't surprise me. He killed two of the three skeletons I still had with me.
Mutamin's corpse had a nice gift: Tome of Understanding.
I did hunt some ankhegs. Tuwiel did great as long as she had extra help. First, she killed two ankhegs outside with the help of skeletons, then she killed three inside the cave system with help of the powerful DUHM + Seeking Sword combo. DUHM gives an extra +5 to her damage bonus because it takes her STR from 18 to 19. She brought back Brun's son, then tried to kill more ankhegs. Got two or three before she had used more healing potions than I thought I could afford to use, really. Ankhegs can only hit on criticals but they get so many chances when she only has 1 apr.
Taerom is currently making an armor for her. Will be nice to get a lightweight one that can't break.
Tuwiel is now level 7 and has 47 max HP. Pondering what to do next.
