Koon II the Human Bard - Early Stages

Traveling with: Joshua (dwarven fighter), Paja (elven fighter/thief), Hanna (half-elf druid)

Koon II and the gang were working on increasing Joshua's AC. Their first goal was getting the DEX gauntlets - this was achieved without too much hassle. We then got the CHA tome for him as well. While in the area, Koon II leveled and can cast level 2 mage spells, but doesn't know any. So we went to High Hedge to sell and get some spells - Koon got invisibility, resist fear (no cleric so this is an important spell for the team), and skull trap. This way if he gets access to level 3 spells, he will at least know one. Skull trap happens to be real strong for bards as well, with their relatively fast leveling compared to mages, increasing the power of the spell.

Then we picked up Landarin's items in her house (the spiders were dealt with earlier) and headed to the Friendly Arm Inn. We killed the Ogre with the belt fetish while we were here. The piercing belt went to Koon II, so he can better survive archer ambushes. Once at the FAI, we picked up a ring we found (that no one can use) and killed some nearby hobgoblins. Joia was glad to get her ring back.

Only prep was resist fear - this was more than enough, and in fact Tarnesh died despite having mirror images up, and fast at that. When we reported to Landarin she gave us 6 antidotes - how nice! We sold and went to Beregost to get some full plate for Joshua. His plate mail went to Paja. We had some left over gold, so also got a magical ax for Joshua, his ax has broke a few times, so this will stop that problem.

We would like to get some Carnival purchases, but some more reputation might be helpful. So he defended Prism from Greywolf - Greywolf resisted 2 blinds, despite being doomed. However, he didn't resist the entangle, which lowered his defense score, this in turn allowed us to get some good hits on him and kill him. Joshua took a few big hits, but he can weather them with his 37 HP. Sword went to Paja since Paja can use it to tank if ever needed. We found a frost wand in the area, and Joshua soloed some war dogs in a building.

The party headed east and ran into some bears and a ghast and ghoul. The ghast was cut down by ranged fire, as was the ghoul. The party was going to go east once more (Samuel), but Corey_Russell ran out of time and ended the session here.

Edit: some typos fixed

True - elven wild mage (update 3)

The quasit led the way through the mines - its regeneration allowing it to recover quickly from damage taken.  There was one nasty moment here when a kobold hit with a maximum damage critical and its morale broke for the first time.  Fortunately it recovered quite quickly before it blundered into any more enemies.  Mulahey doesn't talk to familiars, so the quasit just clawed pieces out of him - True joined in with a few darts at the end when he tried to run.  The gray oozes could have one-shot the quasit, so True took a potion of defense and tanked them himself.

Blindness, web and stinking cloud meant none of the amazons were able to defend themselves.  Nimbul went the same way as Mulahey, while Tranzig was another stinking cloud victim. Before going to the Bandit Camp she shopped at Ulgoth's Beard and High Hedge.  Using the ring of invisibility she took the ankhegs' treasure.

She christened her newly learnt skull trap spell on some sirines trapped in webs.  One of the ones in the second group actually survived all her 4 skull trap spells - but not a follow-up magic missile.  The flesh golems were taken down with +1 darts.

Moving on to the Bandit Camp she cleared a route to the leaders' tent using area effect spells.  The first dangerous moment of the run occurred here though when True found that her web extended beyond the apparent perimeter and she took several hits before a bandit was held as well.  Inside the tent Venkt and Hakt were blinded, before a series of webs and stinking clouds set up skull traps - leaving just a single dart required to finish off Hakt.  She got to level 9 there - cloudkill adding to her array of area effect spells.

In the Cloakwood she used her invisibility ring to go through the web traps, but otherwise just ran away from enemies.  At the mine cloudkill, malison and emotion were added to the web / stinking cloud / skull trap mixture - unsurprisingly none of the enemies emerged from the toxic brew.  After going down invisibly True scorched the battle horrors and then managed to get Daveorn to concede defeat (emotion) without ever actually seeing her.  A first use of summoned monsters then allowed her to get unopposed attacks on the mustard jelly in order to loot the treasure chests.

After attempting to flood the mine she returned to Daveorn's body to get the key  and then flooded it for real.  Now with boots of speed on, it was even easier to run away from ambushes and it didn't take long for her to arrive in Baldur's Gate.

Looking good Grond0. You going to do anything new for the endgame, or do your usual strategy for BG 1 endgame for your wild mages? Monster Summoning Wand/MM Wand for Sarevok might be safe, no surges that way.

I agree that would be safer, but I've been casting lots of spells this run, so will probably throw in some magic missiles at Sarevok to speed things along - one way or the other :P.

True - elven wild mage (4th and final update)

True has finished her quick tour of the Sword Coast and moved on to try her luck in Amn.

In the City she learnt a few more scrolls and then picked up the tomes in the City without any problems - Jalantha dying to summons, Ramazith to a scorcher and Marek of blindness.

Back at Candlekeep she used MGoI, mirror image and knock to loot the tombs before leaving invisibly.  She also picked up the tome from Durlag's Tower before going back to the City (her first bandit ambush triggered on the way, but they failed to hit her fast moving form at all).

Slythe was pulled away from Krystin and 3 groups of summons were enough to finish him off.

At the palace she started off by using improved invisibility on Belt.  Darts of stunning stopped one of the dopplegangers before a malisoned emotion caught 4 of them - that pretty much ended the danger, even though the dopplegangers had already killed Liia.

She used invisibility and MGoI to go through the maze - though she had to run up and down the corridor about 8 times to trigger all the traps near the skeleton warriors (the combined effect of boots and oil of speed making her very light-footed).

In the temple she tried to buff with spirit armour, but got an entangle surge - good job that didn't occur when enemies were chasing her.  She used improved invisibility as a buff instead and pulled Sarevok out with a wand magic missile.  While he was occupied with summons she ran through all her magic missiles and acid arrows while throwing darts.  She then started in on skull traps; Sarevok had been at near death for a while, so I expected her second skull trap to prove fatal, but he struggled on.  However, the next dart to hit him tipped him over the edge.

Nice work Grond0, as usual. Take care of True in Amn/ToB hmm? Still a ways to go but perhaps True can avenge Grit's and Noywad III's deaths...

As I intended, having heard nothing otherwise from my Queen, to work southward into the Bear River area believing that this is what she would have me do for now. We’d passed thru here briefly on way to the Gnoll Stronghold a few weeks ago.  While there, I killed a pack of Wild Dogs, a pack of War Dogs, 12 Ogres, three Ogrillons, three Cave Bears & a Polar Bear before being accosted by a Paladin for no reason – a Paladin who killed Safana.  We killed her & found the answer to the ago old riddle, “If you kill a Paladin (who attacks you) miles away from another soul, will you still lose reputation points?”

So I returned to that Xvart Village that was north east of the Gnoll Stronghold. It was pretty tame ay first as all I could count among my victims was a single Brown Bear. But then I found a ravine between a pass & the fun started. I found & murdered at least 50 Xvarts. I figured it accomplished two things. First of all, they were hostile to me before I did anything, so they deserved to die for that alone. But second, they’d been relocated by the former Gnolls of the Stronghold so I don’t know what kind of alliance or arrangement they might have had, so to be safe I killed them all. It was enjoyable really & I know Shar-teel enjoyed herself as did the runt Kagain.  Safana landed one or tewo pretty back-stabs too.  The Xvarts brought in a Cave Bear, Ursula, I think they called her so she died w/them. We found a found a treasure cave but ended up/w a little decent loot & cleared it after killing another Cave Bear.

SHOOTING XVARTS IN A BARREL- WELL KINDA.

Key Event: After shootin’ the Xvarts in a barrel, I decided to finish reconnoitering the area & move on to the Dryad Falls east of here. While wandering the wilderness we were approached by a guy selling magic potions etc. I did the math & there was one of him so I told him I thought it better we just take them from him by force. He tried to put up a fight & appeared to be a Mage Dual-Class of some kind. He cast what I thinK was a Mirror Image to start things off. We countered w/me casting Chaos, Jaheira casting Silence 15’ Radius, Quayle Blindness (Qualyle was right in front of him & after he cast the spell he took off to gain some space). Kagain went Berserk & then tore into him as did Shar-teel I(both S/caster Atk AI now). After he’d been beat pretty good I cast Cause Serious Wounds but before I could lat hands on him Kagain & Shar-Teel landed tough back to back blows and he died. He had some loot too.

Level Up: Safana heard from heard Thieves’ Guild that she is now a Magsman (Thief/8) & has increased her Thieving Proficiencies O/Locks & P/Pockets 60%; F/Traps, H/Shadows, M/Silently 55%;

Koon II the Human Bard - FINAL Update

Koon II has become a statue. Back to Candlekeep. I thought he was going to live because the basilisk text said, "Attacks Joshua", so I gave the mirror eyes potion to Joshua - but it was Koon II that got hit - not sure how that works. I have an unusual concept for my next run, it may not be viable at all, but going to give it a shot anyways.

Guttax entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge...

Vanilla BG 1

TotSC expansion

Official TotSC patch

Core Rules at all times

"gore" on (characters can be chunked)

Guttax, Half-Elf Cleric/Ranger, stock picture

STR 18/90 DEX 18 CON 18 INT 9 WIS 18 CHA 7

This run is going to be MUCH different than normal - I'm not even sure it's viable but going to give it a go to see what happens:

CONCEPT:

Usually I meta-game my characters, and often don't role-play them except sometimes evil characters or paladins. This run will be quite different than that. I will only do what Corey_Russell would actually do. To be a bit more specific, Corey_Russell would never rob from people or Inns. Therefore, he will only buy upgrades, take them off fallen enemies, or possibly from clearly abandoned places. Items that I don't believe Corey_Russell would have found will be skipped this time. So no ring of wizardry at FAI, no Ankheg armor in the field (Corey_Russell would never have searched the farmer's field) and so on. All dialog will carefully be read, and only choose dialog Corey_Russell would actually choose (exception: to give myself a chance, this doesn't apply if the choice would lead to a scripted death - trying to give me a chance of success here). As an example, I did NOT choose the best dialog for Marl - I chose what Corey_Russell would have chosen and lived with the consequences (I ended up having to kill him in this case). In my normal run I ALWAYS steal the +1 bastard sword from the Thunderhammer Smithy - I won't do this run, because Corey_Russell would actually never do that, and so on. Also, Guttax will ONLY go where he has indications in game - e.g., he is only going to the Gnoll Stronghold because Minsc told him about it. Guttax will NOT enter people's homes without a RP reason to do so, or dialog mentioning them (such as Ragefast being mentioned by commoners). Normally just Inns and Shops and Temples. In order to give myself RP reason to do/go various places, will talk to almost all commoners and note any areas/people - if they mention anyone/any place (Brage, Firewine Ruins) I can go there.

Results so far:

Imoen and Xzar and Montaron were recruited - we went to FAI as Gorion had suggested. Guttax was in front and did NOT pre-buff in any way, as he thought Tarnesh might be a friend that he was to meet. SOME meta-gaming is necessary and cannot be avoided - in this case Guttax had a resist fear memorized - he cast it and ran for his life - fortunately the rest of the group finished Tarnesh quick.

Guttax talked to everyone at FAI - as a result he obtained AND RETURNED the belt of piercing - because that's what Corey_Russell would do. He did NOT talk to Joia - he had  no reason to enter her house - he didn't even fight the hobgoblins, because they are north, but his friends (Khalid and Xzar) said we need to head to Nashkel and soon - which is south.

In Beregost, Corey_Russell lost control of his party members and the Zhents and the Harpers started killing each other!!! Corey_Russell kind of pre-empted this and killed the Zhents, and he was going to kick them out anyways once Minsc joined the party. This opened up two spots thus Garrick's mistress was killed and Garrick joined the group, for now. The spiders were killed, per Landarin's request - but Guttax still headed south, Per Khalid/Jaheira's request - only after talking to the Mayor of Nashkel, did Guttax return to the FAI and return Landarin's things to her as well as the piercing belt to its original owner.

Back in Nashkel, Minsc was recruited - we entered the Nashkel Inn and took NO pre-emptive action, until we heard her in game say "I'm going to slit your throat I am" - even then Minsc and Khalid got held - Garrick's bard song helped the Thac0 of the party, and Jaheira spammed heals on her husband to keep Khalid alive.

I talked to everyone at Nashkel, Beregost and FAI to get clues as where to go - Bjornin mentioned the half-ogres, so will explore that area when Minsc's quest is complete.

Sorry Corey, about Mutamin's latest statue...
Best of luck with your Cleric/Ranger. I like the fact that you're roleplaying him. Personally I enjoy those types playthroughs better as doomed as they may be to fail...

Laurel? Do you know why she did that?

This must have been a reputation issue. Rep. of 7 or less means she'll attack...

I love the concept, Corey. You really have to think a lot - so much in this game tends to go on 'autopilot'.

I really like what Tutu (I think it's Tutu, could be NPC Project...) does with this quest. It adds an item to the ogre's inventory called 'Unshey's girdle' with no special powers. Then Randomizer puts the Girlde of Piercing somewhere else in the game.

Laurel? Do you know why she did that?

Yeah.  Any time I play an evil PC & come upon Laurel, she says something like, "I sense a rogue, blah, blah, blah...I'm gonna have to kill you now."  I don't know if it's based on rep or, maybe, she uses the innate Paladin, Detect Evil ability or goes off b/c of that. Either way, you ended up fighting her but you don't get the Gibberling quest she usually offers up.

Good for you C_R:  Very similar to how I usually play my Paladins etc. I think it makes them game more realistic...but also makes a 'no-reload' virtually impossible b/c you almost have to use 'foreknowledge' to be successful in a no-reload, e.g. 'pre-buffing' before big battles, avoiding traps or certain villains until you're ready. Aside from the Demon Knight in DsT where you are told he's in the next room & I guess you could toss in the main battle in the Bandit Camp & a couple of others, in my mind aren't really realistic.

If you play the game, it will lead you to certain paths on the main story-line, generally making the side-quests from TOTSC, most likely as a way of 'lying low' after you've had to go into hiding for murder after C-Keep Chapter 6.

Ofcourse, I add to my pain by playing Hard Times &  Randomizer which means I have no idea where magic items & other valuable things are located (enchanted items are very limited) & gold & gems are less abundant than the vanilla game but I think simulates the iron crisis better. People are poorer &, gods forbid, that bastard sword you're so handy with suddenly breaks off at the pommel when you're down to your last ounce of life...that really sucks.

Good luck. You're one of my mentors in this game.  CKT

Breaking weapons are vanilla game behaviour. I also use the 'Breakable Iron Nonmagical Shields, Helms, and Armor' from BG2 Tweaks, which can cause things like an arrow hit breaking the helmet of a character. You need to keep spare items of several types around in the early game (until you have magical stuff in pretty much all the item slots).

It's just Randomiser by itself which place that *Unshey's Girdle* instead Girdle of Piercing. I play TuTu for ages and never NPC Project and only with my current run (first time with Randomiser) I got that girdle from the Ogre.

All the best with your RP run, Corey! Should be some refreshing experience =)

Yeah, I guess I knew that from another of the six/eight mods I use. I get 'em confused and actually write down each change I make so every time I change my set-up I know what I did last time.

Was so happy when Kagain ended up w/an an enchanted Battle Axe, Warheammer & Throwing Axe.  Battle Axes & Throwing Axes are heavy & I had to have just about everyone in the party 'sharing the load for him.'

Just got one of two enchanted Long Swords for Shar-Teel & have both Spiders Bane & Bastard Sword +1/+3 (Shapechangers) for my PC.

Carrying all those extra weapons gets very heavy...& desn't leave room for the 'good stuff.'

Guttax the half-elf cleric/range - update 2

Traveling with: Khalid, Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Dynaheir, (Garrick)

The team successfully rescued Dynaheir - due to engine limitations we had to kick out Garrick. Garrick is relaxing at the now safe Gnoll Stronghold...guess he figures no one will bother him there.

Now that have Dynaheir, there are a number of quests to accomplish. The first one we did was search the area S-S-SW, per Bjornin's directions, for the 4 half-ogres. We cleared the area of hostiles and reported to Bjornin - Khalid got a much needed +1 shield.

We decided we really should deal with this Bassilus fellow, he's a threat to the population. We explored an area where he was rumored to be and found a talking chicken named Melicamp - when we get time will go to Thalantyr's and see if Thalantyr can restore him (incidentally, Melicamp did not survive). But before that we have a pretty difficult battle with a strong hobgoblin (Zorgal I think) and two elite hobgoblin archers - Khalid is getting repeatedly poisoned and used up all his antidotes, we had to hand him one and Guttax and Jaheira had to spam heals on Khalid to keep him in one piece - but everyone lived and the hobgoblin bandits eventually succumbed to our attack. A nice short sword went to Imoen.

The battle with Bassilus was tough. For one, Guttax did the response options that Corey_Russell would actually say - this resulted in a mass battle with both Bassilus and the many skeletons and zombies nearby. We don't have fireballs or anything like that. Khalid was closest to Bassilus so he opened with a invulnerability potion - the rest of the party opened fire on Bassilus himself with range weapons. Khalid got hit with rigid thinking and starting attacking party members - this was disrupting our attacks on Bassilus. Khalid even was trying to kill Jaheira and got a good hit on her - Jaheira and Guttax did entangle, partly to root Bassilus but also to lower the defense scores of the skeletons so we can kill them quicker. Basically who wasn't being attacked by Khalid continued attacks on Bassilus and his friends - Bassilus down, Minsc charges into melee on the undead. Khalid and Imoen are being sniped, Imoen runs around trying to get out of the range of the skeleton attacking her (which isn't hard since its still entangled). Khalid finally regains his senses - he gulps two blue potions and with his help the undead soon all fall.

We report to Keldath our success, and spend a huge chunk of our reward on potions, both blue and antidotes - the Bassilus area just drained us to almost none. We also bought a magical long sword for Khalid.

The next quest was finding the stealth boots for the halfing in the central inn at Beregost. We found them and returned them to the halfling (though from a meta-gaming point of view I would never do so if I have a thief, which I do this run). We also buy AC 8 bracers for Dynaheir (because from RP view we don't know about the bracers at the Xvart Village) and with our last spare change shield amulet for Dynaheir.

We got in ambush about this time, but the party held their ground and did ok as you can see.

There's a lot of things we would get but no more money - playing this RP way, feels like Hard Times. So the party was browsing tent wares, at least tried to, when we found Zordral threatening a mage named Bentha. Once again, Guttax chose dialog that Corey_Russell would actually choose - but this got Bentha killed - Zordral paid for that murder with his life - his robe was a upgrade for Dynaheir.

While in the Nashkel Mine area, we found a soldier telling us about Prism. We listened to Prism's story, and decided to guard him for now, though when we get a chance was going to encourage him to return the stolen emeralds. A rather mean bounty hunter named Greywolf appeared - we asked him to back off but Greywolf refused - Greywolf was hitting Minsc pretty hard, he resisted almost everything, but the party still defeated him - Greywolf's sword went to Minsc. Guttax brought both emeralds to Oublek so that they can be returned to their rightful owner. (Incidentally, I never do this when meta-gaming - 1500 gold is far more helpful than 200 experience - but Corey_Russell would return lost items to their rightful owners if he could, so that's what Guttax did).

The entire Nashkel Mine was explored and cleared of all hostiles - this took two trips as we looted everything, since our gold was so bad (this brought back memories - my very FIRST run though this is exactly what I did - I haven't done in this a long time, since form meta-gaming point of view, taking these risks for 7 experience creatures just isn't worth it - but poor Guttax must do what Corey_Russell would have done).

I didn't meta-game for Mulahey - e.g., I sent Khalid and Minc into his cave, then Imoen, Dynaheir, Jaheira and Guttax had to deal with Mulahey's Minions. Jaheira did an entangle on the minons and Guttax tried a turn undead which wasn't very successful - one skeleton wasn't entangled so Guttax and Jaheira meleed that one. Dynaheir did a color spray on 3 kobolds to make sure they wouldn't case problems for while. Minsc and Khalid continued to pressure Mulahey with their swords, but probably the biggest help is Imoen used these fire arrows we picked up from kobold commandos on Mulahey - Mulahey is slain and fails to rigid thinking/hold anyone - with the fighters help, the minions soon fall without further incident.

From meta-gaming point of view, I always go to Carnival from killing Mulahey - not this time, if Guttax was Corey_Russell, I really would report to the Mayor of Nashkel right away, not to mention relax at an inn after seeing the horrors of the mine. We encountered Nimbul but did no buffs until AFTER Nimbul declared his intentions - Jaheira did resist fear, Guttax did a hold person and Dynheir burning hands - This was too much for Nimbul.

We have a little bit of cash with our reward money. So we get a +1 shortbow for Imoen and a +1 dagger for Jaheira - entire party now has magical melee weapons. We follow up on Mulahey's letter and confronted the mage Tranzig - Tranzig wanted to surrender almost immediately, but Guttax reasoned that Tranzig directly or indirectly caused the deaths of many innocent Nashkel Miners, creating many widows and orphans - he isn't going to get away with that and he was slain. The +1 ring went to Minsc.

The party heard from a commoner about some possible treasure in Ulcaster School and Firewine Ruins - we will investigate both of those before investigating the bandits in the NE - Guttax reasoned based on the trouble we had with Mulahey (and the Bassilus area), we need better equipment and experience before taking on the bandits directly.

I hit a bug in the Secret of Bonehill quest. I did some things before I was asked to do them and it broke the programming. Had to use Movetoarea to return to main quest. :(

Is doing that within the rules?

You are talking about a mod there - who knows what the developer intent there was. If you believe it was a bug, just state what you did and move on.

Guttax the half-elf role-playing cleric/ranger - update 3

Guttax's run is still going. Normally, I "meta-game" and use the entrance in the kobold house to Firewine - but Guttax doesn't enter houses uninvited, so instead Guttax is entering the conventional way (entrance at the Firewine Ruins map). He's heard of the great danger of Firewine Ruins, so he thought to make it safe for the party, Dynaheir would put the thief invisible (turn off AI so the thief doesn't attack anything), and have the thief clear the ruins of traps. This is definitely harder in vanilla than with BG 2 engine because vanilla does NOT have auto-pause on trap detected. Thus, Imoen set off a lightning bolt trap - she survived one hit and was trying to get to a passageway for cover - but her pathing caught on a wall and she was CHUNKED.

Hmm, well since in Chapter 3 and Montaron has long since been dead, guess I need to recruit Safana. Dynaheir did the same thing, put Safana invisible and she went to work on de-trapping. She too didn't detect a lightning bolt trap in time and she was chunked as well! Sad thing was she had a potion of absorption, which she was going to use in response to a trip, but it killed her instantly so no time. (short hallway).

Last thief available in Chapter 3 is Shar-Teel - though she will have to dual immediately. Will also need to clear basilisks area so she isn't level one when she tries to do her thing in the Firewine Ruins.
