Wild mage... random roll... no healing potions..

True, though the various deaths have been more down to lack of concentration than inherent difficulty.  However, if at first you don't succeed ...

Zart{4} - elven wild mage (2nd and final update)

Killing Tranzig didn't make the bandit camp show up on the map, so she got a lift there with Teven.  That had the fringe benefit of being able to kill Tazok.  Zart then just looted the camp invisibly before moving on to the Cloakwood.  She used fireballs / scorchers to kill Drasus & co before diving into the mine.  She moved down to Daveorn and used wand blasts on the battle horrors before summoning a couple of lots of allies to deal with the mage.

In the city she learnt various spells using the red potion before seeking out the tomes.  A few summons were used in the front line against Jalantha and Marek (the ogres confused by Marek quickly being scorched before they could attack any innocents).

Back at Candlekeep she used MGoI to protect against traps - except when forgetting to do so before opening the second tomb!  Fortunately, she was moving quickly away so that the lightning bolt failed to hit her again on the rebound.

Once more in Baldur's Gate, Slythe was pulled away from Krystin and quickly killed by some summons.  At the palace this version of Zart went for an immediate malison + chaos rather than casting improved invisibility on Belt.  That worked perfectly, although by the time chaos cast Liia was dead and Belt had been hit a number of times.  That wasn't quite the end of the story though as 2 dopplegangers ran downstairs.  When Zart followed he was able to scorch one, but the other ran up again - regaining control immediately after doing so.  With Belt still not safe Zart resorted to another chaos (in theory the wand of paralysation should have been a better option, but I haven't had much luck with that recently).  Despite surging, this one was also successful and the battle ended soon after.

Sarevok was offered no chance.  After being pulled out by a wand magic missile he was fed a diet of summons while Zart threw darts and the odd magic missile.  She had just used the last of her 180 magic darts when Sarevok called it a day.

@Grond0: Glad to see your wild mage finally made it past BG 1 - sorry about the problem in Irenicus' dungeon. Maybe try an inquisitor next? You aren't that class very often.

I headed to Mutamin’s Garden. I’d been there when my Queen led me to find Shar-Teel way back when.

Key Event: When I got there I just decided to go straight ahead where I ran into six Tasloi before coming upon four Gnolls. I saw red & started attacking the Gnoll’s w/fervor leaving my minion’s behind. Just as I was movin’ in for the kill w/the others in tow, suddenly a female voice issued a challenge but I was intent on finishing those darned Gnolls before I focused on my four aggressors who appeared to be warriors/knights &/or warrior/clerics. There were spells being casts so we know there were some casters but not sure if it was divine or mages magic. In my mind I was wary of the other attackers but could see anything but Gnolls & so I stayed until I mopped them up one side & down the other.  Meanwhile, my minions began working on the other aggressors. Viconia cast Silence 15’ Radius while Quayle cast Blindness @ the leader & Safana moved out & behind Hidden in Shadow. Shar-teel & Kagain helped me finish up the Gnolls before starting to work on the other attackers who were obviously more talented than Gnolls. I’m bnot even sure what happened but the ‘back benchers’ took out one of ‘em before we even finished the Gnolls which was about the time I saw one of them heading for out lines in his Splint Mail.  Jagain focused on that guy while Shar-Teel & I headed out to take out the spell casters. Viconia dropped the leader, who’d cast Mirror Image on herself, w/a Command Spell.  Just then, Safana & Shar-Teel got to the second spellcaster. Kagain finished up his guy & headed up where the real fun was.  We killed the spellcaster that was still standing & then focused on the leader & made her Sleep a lot more permanent.

PRAISE MALCANTHET FOR VICTORY!

In the running for ‘key event’ during this foray was a battle against a putrid little Gnome mage, I guess an Illusionist like Quayle, only better.  He was more difficult than he might have been b/c he was accompanied by a Greater & a Lesser Basilisk. Shar-Teel & I quaffed Potions of Mirrored Eyes while I left Kagain & crew to deal w/the Gnome. Shar-Teel & I did our work & had to return to help Kagain who was taking a beating, including getting popped w/a Melf’s Acid Arrow & Magic Missile combo.  Iintitally Quayle helped by casting Blindness on the Basilisks but for the second time today was unable to get to a place where he was able to use the Wand of Lightning. Then Quayle moved back to see if he could help kagain. Viconia had used her Silence 15’ Radius already in the earlier battle w/the four adventurers so she cast Miscast Magic hoping to throw the Gnome off but it didn’t seem to work. Regardless, got back & Shar-Teel & I pummeled him into the dirt.

DEFEATING THE GNOME MAGE & HIS BASILISKS

While in the Garden, I also confronted & killed at least 4-5 additional Lesser Basilisk & 3-4 of the Greater types but, what really thrilled me was a chance to kill some wandering Ghoul & four Gnolls @ the same time!! Throw in the four Flinds I killed & sacrificed to Malcanthet later & there were bondfires of Ghouls, Gnolls & Flinds burning all over before I left there. I’m feeling good about my reputation on Layer 570.

Juve - elven wild mage (update 1)

After a few attempts playing around with various different tactics I'm going to have another serious go at a minimum risk run. As usual there will be no use of healing potions or antidotes.

I was intending to restrict Juve to darts and attacks by his familiar until he reached level 6.  In fact he has used a frost wand just once - after running out of darts while attacking the cave bear guarding the treasure in the xvart village.

There have been just a couple of potentially nasty moments so far:
- the ogre with a belt fetish reacted quicker than I expected while the familiar was running him round.  Juve had to move in sharpish in order to distract the ogre from finishing the scared familiar off.
- one of Landrin's huge spiders demonstrated a longer reach than expected to attack Juve over an invisible familiar.  Their poison is pretty weak so Juve would have had time to rest or get that cured before dying, but he saved anyway.

His reputation is up to 20 and Juve is currently on the way to Ulgoth's Beard to buy things there.  He'll then do the basilisks, lighthouse and get the tome from Durlag's Tower before proceeding with the main quest line.

The only spell cast so far has been find familiar and that will remain the case until he gets to the City.

His HPs are good so far and a continuation of that will be welcome if he has to face the odd spike trap in the future!

Juve - elven wild mage (2nd and final update)

Juve bought everything he wanted from Ulgoth's Beard and then set out to deal with the basilisks - using a green scroll and his new staff.  Korax helped out with Mutamin and then joined with some summoned gnolls to beat up Kirian's party.

On to the lighthouse area where a couple of lots of summons together with wand blasts took out the sirines.  Darts and staff (attacking over the head of the invisible familiar) were used on the golems.

After collecting the tome from Durlag's Tower, I had intended to go to the Nashkel mine.  However, with no charisma bonus for shopping this run, I decided to get the funds from Bassilus first.  Some early morning doziness resulted in disaster there though.  To be safe I had decided to use the familiar to talk to Bassilus while Juve stayed out of the way.  Bassilus was duly killed by some wolves, but the undead hadn't disappeared and were attacking them.  The problem was that the familiar was still sitting there in a standard scouting role without being invisible (as a result of talking) and I wasn't watching the text showing it was being attacked.  A fraction of a second after I realised why some skeletons were not moving to attack the wolves, the familiar died.

I wanted to continue into BG2 doing a minimum risk run and that's no longer possible with Juve having lost constitution (he would have to lose HPs or forgo the saving throw bonus from the Claw of Kazgoroth - either of which would make surges more dangerous).  As a result I'll restart him.

Juve{2} - elven wild mage (update 1)

With this restart I'll spent less time darting things early on - using more wands instead.  As a subsidiary objective this run I'm aiming to get Juve through BG1 without taking any damage.

So far things have been pretty smooth, with just the one glitch.  That was when the familiar started attacking Sendai fractionally too close to Delgod and Alexander.  As a result her shouts for help caused them to turn hostile and come to attack the familiar - Juve had to quickly summon some ogres to act as a distraction in order to save it.  He also killed Albert in that area, although that wasn't worth it - costing a number of wand charges for just 1,000 XP and 250 gold.

Juve has just got to level 6 by taking revenge on Basillus for his predecessor.  This time Juve had the conversation himself and the undead all died on schedule - making finishing off Bassilus no problem for some hobgoblins.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 48 - (4th and final update)
Atrax, half-elf druid (Grond0) & Lacca, half-elf cleric/mage (Gate70)

Today's session started badly and continued up and down until a disastrous finish.

Marek was the first to cause problems as a mis-click left Atrax in range of his confusion - resulting in reputation plummeting from 20 to 1.  However, a visit to the temple restored most of the losses.

Next up was Ramazith.  Tackling him without a rest meant no summons were available and the mage meanly focused on Lacca - chasing him in and out of the tower rather than being distracted by Atrax.  That ended with Lacca facing death for the first time - resulting in another trip to the temple.

Drelik was the next to cause trouble.  Once more there were no summons and his magic resistance allowed him to survive long enough for his magic missiles to take Atrax down to just a handful of HPs.

The last of the difficult battles was with Slythe.  This time summons were put in place, but Atrax led Slythe too far - meaning he attacked Lacca immediately on going hostile.  He narrowly survived thanks to quaffing an invisibility potion, while Slythe was held by a couple of nymphs.

The battle at the palace was pretty easy.  A group of summons were buffed with haste, strength, bless, defensive harmony and quickly started tearing into the dopplegangers.  Lacca supported with a slow, while Atrax contributed a couple of insect plagues.  The result was that both dukes survived. Unfortunately I was thinking about how to describe the battle, rather than concentrating on the game.  The result was that Duke Belt was not impressed with Atrax's attempt to blacken Sarevok's character without showing some evidence to support this!

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 49 - (update 1)
Loqi, human enchanter (Grond0) & Wroth, half-elf totemic druid (Gate70)

Gate70 nobly refrained from either shouting or laughing at me at the conclusion of our previous run and a new random pairing was swiftly born.  The totemic summons are far too powerful for most encounters in BG1 and that has allowed rapid progress so far.

After the normal start with Shoal, they were soon taking on the basilisks - a spirit snake finishing the lot of them off rapidly.  Meilum also failed to trouble the scorers and even Kahrk was soon spirited away.  Seeking more high-value encounters the duo moved on to the lighthouse area where summons dealt with both sirines and golems.

They've just finished a quick whip through the Cloud Peaks and should make further rapid progress next time.

Stats:

Loqi, enchanter 5, 38 HPs (inc 12 from familiar), 12 kills

Wroth, totemic druid 7, 45 HPs, 14 kills, 0 deaths

As you can see from the low deaths for both characters, summons have been doing most of the hard work!

Glasya, half-elven Sorceress with random spell picks, adventuring in chapter 7 with Branwen, Minsc, Imoen, Coran and Xzar

I found no more invisibility potions for sale anywhere, but I did buy a couple of (Improved) Invisbility scrolls. That will still translate to more available potions because I can use those scrolls when it's not a major emergency.

Ulgoth's Beard finale
Since it's very expensive for me to turn the whole party invisible, I did something different here. All but Branwen immediately used Oil of Speed (I have plenty of those) and ran south, along the outer fence of the village. Branwen stayed to tank, and drank a Magic Blocking potion once the Enforcer was casting a spell.

According to the text, one of the assassins had chased us. It was Hasted because of the Enforcer's buffs. I tried valiantly to avoid this, but it just HAD to happen, didn't it?:

Glasya147damnassassin_zps55ceb6e2.jpg

Meanwhile:
Glasya148BranwentheMVP_zpse17d68fc.jpg

Great move there, Xzar!:

Glasya149panickedassassin_zps70beb1d8.jp

He followed that up with a succesful Detect Invisibility and we could gun down that assassin.

Meanwhile:
Glasya150Branwenagain_zpsfb7c3cc2.jpg

I added some monsters to try to speed up the killing of those Held enemies but they were not of much use:
Glasya151scaredcritters_zps65fe6790.jpg

After this fight, one is free to rest at the inn, which I did (completely ignoring Hurgan's plea to rush things...).

Branwen tanked the first batch of cultists very well. Two archers fled into Therella's house. I followed them, even though I kind of knew that we would run into a familiar guy:

Glasya152familiarguy_zpsb7ca4343.jpg

Branwen drank a third Magic Blocking and just let him play with his spells. He is not affected by SCS and will do a scripted spell sequence which ends with a Dimension Door away from here.

The first batch of cultists we lured out of the house was tough on Branwen, so I pulled her back and sent in Minsc instead. His AC is not that great, so Glasya helped with a Bhaal power:
Glasya153Horrifichelp_zps5f6baf2d.jpg

Basement went perfectly. Coran sneaked down and took out all the cult guards with bolts. Tracea Carol was lured upstairs and eventually killed. Aec'Letec was then within sight of the stairs (not good!) so Coran got down, past it and got just within peeking distance, Mirrored Eyes potion at the ready. He backed off and hid in the shadows. This had the effect I wanted - Aec moved closer to him. So now the path laid open for Xzar's victory:

Glasya154Xzarsvictory_zps386ff5f4.jpg

The beast's MR saved it one round, then it was over.

Duchal Palace
Preparations done:
Glasya155Palacefightpreparations_zps4630

The plan was to have Minsc and Branwen in position by the Grand Dukes (Minsc used Hide in Shadows, then strapped on his full plate while in shadows, Branwen used Sanctuary to get there), to have Coran close by, both to fight and to remove Mirror Images, Imoen fire arrows and my mages fire spells in through the doorway. Xzar with Greater Malison, Glasya starting an Emotion just after Xzar has begun, then they'd follow up with Slow and another Emotion. Branwen has used a Chaotic Commands spell plus two scrolls on the three characters that were to be most in the action.

There is a problem here, though. A basic, humble buffing spell that I forgot...

Glasya156Coranpanics_zpsabd56859.jpg

I HAVE NOT REMOVE FEAR ON!!!

OK, Branwen saved against one. I order her to cast Remove Fear but more Horrors are coming and she gets scared before even starting the spell! And Minsc is also scared! Bloody hell, that's just *great*, only some frail skeletons standing between the doppelgangers and the Dukes. Okay, they are Chanted, Hasted, Protection from Evil'd skeletons, but still...
I guess it's down to the mages now. Malison has hit a good spot on the floor, and here comes the Emotion:

Glasya157sleepingdoppels_zpse4a823bb.jpg

Yes, YES, YES! Only two of them still standing! Especially nice that the one right next to Liia failed its save. I order all skeletons to attack the two still-fighting doppelgangers. Imoen opens up a can of whupass with ice arrows. Mages do what they can (not that much!) with their slings. Xzar casts Slow, Glasya another Emotion. Both doppelganges saved against Emotion, but did get Slowed and then died pretty quickly. Both Belt and Liia are Confused. What happens if they attack a skeleton, will it fight back? What happens if they attack each other?

Mages melee the closest doppelganger. Imoen switches to plain arrows and attacks another. It's a pretty quick mop-up (those buffed skellies are pretty damn effective against disabled enemies!). Just before the last one falls, my three scared characters calm down. Branwen is just about to cast a Dispel Magic at the Dukes, but that turns out not to be necessary. Belt thanks us even though he is still Confused. He must be protected in some way.

We get back to the Palace from where he sent us. Gotta rob the place, you know. Most of the magic items are removed by Hard Times (basement chest holds a nice cache of Dispelling arrows otherwise) but we get some nice cash, gems and over a dozen spell scrolls (nothing fancy, mostly standard level 3 scrolls).

Not sure if I am going to do the two NPC quests I can still do (Coran's, Xan's). If I don't, it's Thieves' Maze next.

Juve{2} - elven wild mage (update 2)

Juve is still unscathed and has started work on the main quest.

After buying all the good stuff at Ulgoth's Beard, Juve went to the basilisk area.  The basilisks all died in frost blasts and staff attacks.  Korax then paralysed Mutamin before being joined by some gnolls to destroy Kirian's party.

After a bit of tidying up in Beregost Juve proceeded to the coast and took on the sirines.  Doing that took Juve's monster summoning wand down to a single charge and his fire wand to two charges, though darting the golems didn't cost much in resources.

He recharged his monster summoning wand, though didn't have the funds to do the fire wand at that time (as a result of having no charisma bonus when shopping).  After darting Shoal he frost-blasted the ogre clan and then summoned some friends to help with the sirines in that area.

Greywolf also got a frosty reception before Juve finally moved into the Nashkel mine.  Mirror image meant the familiar didn't even get hurt by the traps there and it celebrated by nibbling Mulahey to death.

Three ogres killed 3 of the amazons, but Maneira managed to kill the last 2 - forcing Juve to dart her.

Nimbul was another nibble victim.  Before going on to Tranzig Juve used the loot from his last few encounters to recharge his fire wand and buy the Claw of Kazgoroth.  The fire wand was then used to fireball Tranzig from out of sight.

Before heading north with an eye on Ulgoth’s Beard, I wanted to visit the place called Spider Wood. As I headed east of the FAI, I encountered & killed three Huge Spiders.

Upon arriving, I decided to recon the wood in a clockwise motion moving from outside to inside, ensuring that I bypass nothing.  After destroying three Giant Spiders I was looking for a place to camp b/c all three of my females were dragging, as was Quayle. As I led us northeast to southeast along the eastern edge of Spider Wood, Safana stumbled on a couple of Giant Spiders but by the time we got finished the battle had been joined by a Sword Spider, a Wraith Spider, a Phase Spider & another Giant Spiders. I thoroughly enjoyed this fight & headed for the Wraith Spider straightway. He was eventually supported by the Phase Spider & two of the four Giant Spiders. I beat the four of them down into the turf. Just a few steps away, Kagain & Shar-Teel were duking it out w/the other two Giant Spiders & the Sword Spider. Kagain took a few bites & had to back out & switch to his Throwing Axe +2 while Shar-Teel stayed in the middle of the fight. They ended up killing their spiders about the same time I finished my four.  Afterword, I wondered what my Queen’s relationship w/Lolth, the Demon Queen of Spiders might be – before & after.

SPIDER BATTLE W/SWORD, PHASE, WRAITH & GIANT SPIDERS

EXTERMINATED SPIDER'S

Continuing south still looking for a place to rest, I encountered & killed three more Huge Spiders before finally making camp in the southeast corner of Spider Wood.

Rested, I continued west along the south end of Spider Wood before travelling north where I killed six Tasloi & then headed back to the east again where we battled two more Giant Spiders.  Continuing to circle inward toward the center of the Spider Wood I came across, & killed, three Ettercaps (which reminds me that I killed four other Ettercaps earlier).

Key Event: I killed six more Tasloi & three more Giant Spiders as I continued until Safana stopped in her tracks because she’d seen three Huge Spider’s to her left…but I was more concerned about three Mage’s to my right in what appeared to be an old temple. As they were wearing Red Robes I quickly used my Protection from Magic Scroll. I headed for battle w/them & Quayle cast a Scroll of Fireball and Safana threw a Oil of Fiery Burning right in the middle of them. Right there three of the Red Robes were dead but a fourth had emerged. Luckily, he was throwing a Dart or something – not casting a spell so Kagain & I ran him down & I swung the killing sword blow. Meanwhile, Shar-Teel & Safana dealt with the Huge Spiders. Done!

Juve{2} - elven wild mage (update 3)

At the bandit camp Juve bagged his familiar and then used his invisibility ring for the first time (along with an absorption potion) to investigate the main tent.

Moving through the Cloakwood Juve had a nasty moment when I must have clicked to move on the spot that a spider was about to appear.  That resulted in Juve attacking a spider as soon as he saved against a web trap.  Fortunately he was able to get back out of the trap before being held again and scorch the spiders.

At the Cloakwood Mine a couple of fireballs killed both mages before some gnolls and a scorcher finished Drasus and Genthore.  With his 18 strength this version of Juve was able to bash open the door near Rill and thus avoid the traps near Hareishan.  Sneaking the rest of the way down to Daveorn Juve frosted the guard.  He then took a potion of magic blocking to allow him to go through the traps and scorch the battle horrors - getting his 9th and final BG1 level there.  The potion also blocked Daveorn's lightning and fireball, allowing some summoned ogres to finish him off.

Some gnolls provided cover to allow Juve to kill the mustard jelly and examine a bit more of Daveorn's treasure before leaving.  Juve went to pick up the tome from Durlag's Tower (making a first use of the greenstone amulet) before going to the City and using the red potion to learn all the spells he wanted.

He picked up the tome of dexterity.  Then, in the process of getting the wisdom tome, he used summons to kill Jalantha.  For Marek he used summons again - waiting until the innocents were properly placed to be able to scorch Marek without being affected by confusion (the scorcher also helped quickly dispose of 2 confused ogres to protect reputation).

The intelligence tome was left for now, until Juve has the strength to get into the tower without using magic.  Instead Juve investigated the Iron Throne invisibly before being sent back to Candlekeep. There he used a green scroll of protection from magic for most of the traps and the violet potion to bash the tombs with the tomes in.  He didn't bother with the other tomb as he would need to use magic, with a potential charge of a surge, to provide protection against the repeating spike trap.

He's now back in Baldur's Gate preparing for his final challenges.

Juve{2} - elven wild mage (4th and final update)

Juve used his new-found strength to break into Ramazith's tower and get the intelligence tome before moving on to deal with Slythe.  He was given no chance to talk and 3 lots of summons proved too much for his defences.

Moving on to the palace Juve was refused admission and sheepishly went back to pick up Slythe's equipment before getting in at the second attempt.  He potioned up before showing himself and trying out a first use of the wand of fear as the dopplegangers appeared - that affected one of them, though it didn't appear to prevent it attacking.  Without waiting, Juve ran upstairs and was lucky that 3 of the dopplegangers followed.  One of those was killed by a scorcher, but the other 2 unfortunately got scared and ran back downstairs.  Using the other staircase Juve went back down and tried the wand of paralysation out - that failed, but another doppleganger followed him back upstairs to its doom.  A couple more up and downs and the last of the original dopplegangers was stunned by darts.  The nearly dead ones at the other end of the room then didn't last long, leaving both dukes comfortably alive.

I very carefully chose the response to tell Belt to read some documents and was sent after Sarevok when he made a run for it.  A potion of absorption, 2 green scrolls of protection from fire and a potion of magic blocking allowed him to go through the maze triggering all the traps.

At that point he released his familiar from his bag, used invisibility 10' and rested before proceeding on to the temple.  Unfortunately I was busy thinking about the final fight with Sarevok and disaster struck when Juve came across the Undercity party.  I was surprised when Rahvin spoke to Juve before realising that the potion of magic blocking must still have been just active when the familiar used invisibility the previous night.  However, that should still not have been a problem as Juve could have used a potion of invisibility to disappear before the enemies reacted.  At least he could have done if I hadn't pressed the space bar by reflex - cancelling the auto-pause as the enemies showed themselves  (enemies that are coded as ambushing the character don't trigger the auto-pause, so it's easy to make that mistake).  The only one to react quick enough to target Juve before he did take a potion to disappear was Rahvin.  His shot missed, but unfortunately the shot was with an exploding arrow and it burnt the familiar to a crisp.

As I was aiming to complete the game without taking any damage I'll abandon that effort and see if Juve{3} can make it third time lucky.

I went down to Beregost to try & see if the fraud priest @ temple of the morning could identify a priest scroll I found in the Spider Wood. The scroll turned out to be cursed & worthless but while there I realized I’d never really looked around the Temple itself so I decided to see what was out there, east of the temple building.

Key Event: The first encounter I came upon was with a mixed pack of wolves, including two Vampiric Wolves. Safana started the party by throwing a Potion of Explosions Then it was a melee versus bite battle w/, in addition to the two Vampiric Wolves, two Dread Wolves & three Worgs, I think. Shar-Teel & Kagain charged in & started slugging it out, Kagain taking a few deep bite wounds. I joined them, focusing on the Vampiric Wolves, trying to get them out of the fight but then, I reealized there were three Hobgoblins taking pot-shots @ us from the south.  I decided to take them out, assisted by Quayle who cast Horror from a scroll & panicked one of them. I got to them a short time later & beat them mercilessly. By the time I got finished w/the Hobgoblins the rest of my minions had finished the battle of the wolves.

DEAD WOLVES.

The rest of the area was uneventful when compared to the action I’ve enjoyed lately. Next, I ran into a pack of War-Dogs that I let Shar-Teel & Kagain deal w/. It’s only noteworthy, b/c during the battle Viconia received new power from her goddess Shar. Afterord, we were approached by a band of Hobgoblins led by another of those mouthy Hobgoblin types. As usual, I backed off & let my subordinates handle the duty.

VICONIA RECEIVES A NEW BURST OF POWER FROM THE SHAR

Treasure of Note (Gold 21,598* - I spent ~ 3000 gp on a Scroll of Protection from Magic) None

Current Disposition: I’m @ the Red Sheaf, maybe for the last time. I have my eye on a set of Shadow Armor & a Dagger of Venom that I’ve seen in Feldeposts. The former is about 25k gold but would be great for Safana to use.

Next Steps:  Fishing Village north of the FAI. I’m drawn to Ulgoth’s Beard & plan to seek all the pain & misery I can deliver between here & there.

Level Up: Viconia received an increase in power from her goddess, Shar. She is now a Matriarch of Shar (Cleric/8). She added the spell, Cloak of Fear.

Looking good CKT - I think you could go all the way this time.

Juve{3} - elven wild mage (update 1)

A third attempt to get this character through BG1 without taking any damage is well underway.  He's not done any of the high value XP encounters (Shoal, battle horrors, basilisks, sirines), but has cleared the majority of wilderness elsewhere.  There have been no significant mistakes or particularly dangerous moments so far and he's just bought all the good stuff from Ulgoth's Beard.

The only slight downside is that his HPs are a couple below average for his level - both his predecessors had HPs a couple above average.

Juve{3} - elven wild mage (update 2)

Juve has completed all his intended wilderness encounters and just arrived in Baldur's Gate for the first time.  However, he's failed to do so without taking damage.

I was aware in the latter stages of his travels that I was running short of patience and there was a potentially dangerous moment attacking the sirines in Shoal's area.  Some dire wolves were leading the attack on them, but when one of those got confused and ran away the sirine got an attack in on the familiar - if it had been confused as well that might have caused trouble due to the inability to know where it was going (making use of scorchers dangerous for instance).

Juve managed to finish off those sirines alright, but moments later took damage when attacking the nearby ogre clan.  Ogrillons have a fast attack speed, so Juve needed to retreat immediately after he had released a frost blast.  I didn't do my normal double-taps on the pause button though (to ensure minimum time passes when time is of the essence) and was just too slow to get out of range before the ogrillon retaliated.  Despite that damage I'll continue the run this time anyway as I don't fancy attempting a no-damage run again for the time being.

There was one other encounter of interest - at the bandit camp shortly after Juve had been injured.  He entered the main tent invisibly and showed himself to Raemon by taking the potion of magic blocking before raiding the chest.  Rather than immediately going invisible he ran round a bit - resulting in Raemon stepping into the path of the lightning trap and getting fried.  As Juve had already taken damage he decided to risk killing the others - in the event a single scorcher killed both Hakt & Venkt without any attacks on him anyway.

Juve{3} - elven wild mage (3rd and final update)

In the City Juve learnt lots of spells using the red potion and picked up the tomes of dexterity and wisdom without any problems.  After sneaking into the Iron Throne he returned to Candlekeep and got the tomes there using the violet potion.  With enhanced strength he was able to bash Ramazith's door and claim the last tome.

Slythe was overcome with summons without being given the chance to talk, but once more I was unable to overcome the challenge at the palace.  None of the dopplegangers wanted to be led upstairs and their good saving throws meant that only 1 of them was paralysed or stunned while they chewed through various summons before dining on the dukes.

That's rough Grond0 - was there anything you could have done to make it, other than use a full party?

I could have used spells, which would probably have increased the chance of success.  However, I'm not sure there's any way to guarantee 100% success in that fight - it's the only encounter in BG1 where I think you have a chance of failure even if you play it perfectly.

I arrived @ the Fishing Village & immediately came across four Bandits w/Short Bow & Long Sword which Shar-Tel dispatched on her own. Continuing on the road north, I met a knight, a nobleman, a Paladin, I think. We insulted him until he challenged us & Shar-Teel & Kagain smashed the weakling.

ONE LESS WEAKLING PALADIN

The road yielded four more Bandits, armed as before & then I decided to rest & make camp. I camped right on top of an Ankheg nest & after resting ended up immediately battling three Ankheg’s. After that battle, I tried again to rest & three more Ankheg’s came up right in the middle of our bivouac site, so we killed them too. Following a few hours rest, I decided to go to Beregost to try & sell the five Ankheg shells we had by now but no one was buying so I sold what I could & then went back.

Key Event: On return, after fighting & killing four more Bandits, my team found a group of three men in a small fishing village. They claimed a Priestess of Umberlee was killing them & preventing them from fishing the River Chlonthar which runs from the Sea of Swords between Baldur’s Gate & the Cloakwoods & the Fishing Village & is spanned by the bridge @ Wyrm’s Crossing. I talked them up to 20 gold & an enchanted weapon for my assistance & then went to confront the priestess who was ‘troubling them.’ I was kinda torn, not sure how my Queen feels about Umberlee & so I was gonna let her be when she told a tale of woe about the fisherman stealing some bowl from her mother after torturing her. Don’t get me wrong, I love torture but sensed I might be able to leverage an alliance w/the priestess. I did direct Safana to pickpocket her though & when she did, & failed, it brought us to battle. The priestess cast Entangle but it was ineffective against my subordinates & they easily killed her & then raided her home. On return, I continued to recon near the Fishing Village & had to kill two more Ankheg’s.  Then my group came upon an old farmer wailing about losing his son. He wanted my aid, for free.  Ha, I think not. I left him to wallow in self-pity as I continued my recon & killed another Ankheg & four more Bandits before meeting w/the fishermen again. The weasels tried blowing smoke up my butt but they paid up 120 gp & an enchanted Morning Star…but I killed them anyway. I think one got away…the one w/darned that bowl. Was hoping to carry that to Umberlee & try to leverage it.  Curse that little man for running off before I could kill him.

UMBERLEES PRIESTESS

I WANTED TO SPARE HER. OH WELL.

Later, I found an Ankheg nest where I had my party kill a total of nine more Ankheg’s. Shar-Teel & Kagain did more of the work but I stepped out & swatted a couple or three. The nest had a treasure cove w/some good magic items, potions & gold.  Good haul, this one.

Treasure of Note (Gold 25,186) The Ilvastarr Family Shield sold for 1000 gold; Flail +1 (sold 1000 gold); Ring of Energy (Safana); Shield Amulet (Safana); Cloak of Protection +1 (Quayle)

Current Disposition: I first went to the FAI to let Gellana identify the items I’d found in the Ankheg nest. Then I went to Beregost to sell the Bandit Scalps. Now I’m back @ the FAI, although unwelcome, I’m allowed to grab a room anyway up on the 3rd floor.

Next Steps:  Finish exploring Wyrms Crossing – there’s an elf or half elf w/some wolves out front. If she’s still there I’d like to ambush her by night.  Then it’ll be off the Farmlands before I head to Ulgoth’s Beard

Level Up: None

Alac - dwarven fighter/thief (1st and final update)

Some months ago I thought it would be nice to try and no-reload the trilogy in a day.  I still don't know when I will get the chance to try that uninterrupted by family or work responsibilities.  However, in case I get the chance to attempt it during the summer holidays, I'm intending to develop a script to follow (so that I don't have to waste time thinking about what to do next in the run itself).

I took Alac through BG1 this morning and defeated Sarevok with half a dozen backstabs running round the pillars.  As I've previously done a speed run in BG1 I was just fine-tuning that script.  Doing BG2 will require rather more time and thinking to develop.

RecordendBG1.jpg

Let me know if anyone is interested in the script.

I know what you mean Grond0, I had a checklist for the speed runs I did as I reckoned to waste quite a bit of time either remembering what my next move was or doing the wrong order.

Hewer (Dark Moon Monk) has been out to play with Imoen, Rasaad and Neera for a few minutes in the current BG:EE beta. Ardrouine is relieved to see a trio of green wargs (dagger of venom poison effect) on the ground meaning she can convince her son to come home or something. A trio of sirines have been dealt with thanks to a single use of the greenstone amulet. With that brief activity Hewer is likely to rest up for a few days or weeks (again).

Diary of Darkstaff the Svirfneblin.

I must admit that I was not enamoured of Gorion’s refusal to give me training as an illusionist. He thought that I should train as a thief, but I will show him. My training as a thief was helpful in Candlekeep. I unlocked a chest containing a gem worth 1000 gp with which I was able to buy a certain amount of popularity. I must admit that I was most surprised at Hull’s generosity when I got his sword for him, and when Fuller gave me a dagger +1 I was equally surprised as being dislike and with a charisma of only 1, I tend not to be given anything.

Not being liked, I was not at all surprised when I was attacked by assassins. However, due to the potion of oil of speed that I had just used I was able to keep away from them and kill them with my crossbow.

They were both carrying useful daggers and armour, and this was of great help when I decided that I wanted the possessions of Firebead. They are now mine and he is no more, though I am sure that somebody will resurrect him.

That little incident made me a level 3 thief. It was a little expensive to raise my reputation again, but the experience was worth it.

Gorion and I were ambushed and the fool chose to protect me rather than save his own life. Great for me, not so great for him. I buried him, went to Beregost where I rested and picked up a nice Cloak from Algernon before going to the Friendly Arms Inn as suggested by Gorion.

After dualling to be an illusionist I quickly gained a few levels by performing safe quests such as telling the Dryad what I had done whilst a thief, returning Rufie to Albert, Calming Marl, getting Alanna’s neighbour back into shape, and getting a book for Firebead. This was followed by taking the bowl to the priestess, the ring to Joia, the letter to Mirianne and suchlike, however this only brought me up to level 3.

The ridiculous thing is that they now consider me a hero. True I might have benefitted them, but what is most important is that it has benefitted me. I for instance would never have done what that stupid Finch did. I was attacked by yet another assassin, Karlat I think his name was. I blinded him and then killed him using my sling. Finch with no regard to her own safety attacked with her flail instead of her sling. Idiot! She got herself killed for no reason.

I then got Melicamp back into shape and charmed Bassilus into killing Zargal and some others. Realising that he was nearly dead I threw daggers at him, but it was mistimed and he was killed by the poison from a hobgoblin. I was at first disappointed by this, but then realised that if it hadn’t been for him, that hobgoblin might have killed me.

Needing the experience to regain my thieving abilities, I went Ankheg hunting. I blinded them first, and then killed them using ranged weapons. This worked well in general except on one occasion when I fought an Ankheg that kept saving against blindness. Nevertheless, I brought it to near dead. Unfortunately, it then had even more luck and its attack brought me to within one point of death. I fled the area and spent some time resting in order to regain my health. By the time I returned, the Ankheg had also recovered. However, this time it did not save against blindness and like the other Ankheg, it perished.

I then took on Greybeard with the help of a charmed Galtok and an uncharmed paladin. We killed him easily enough, but when I tried to kill Galtok, he cleared off and I wasn’t able to gain his possessions. The paladin also said goodbye and left without warning.

I returned the emeralds to Oublek and then charmed him into a fight with a baby wyvern. He lost but I didn’t and gained not only the emeralds but a substantial amount of gold.

Since my reputation had reached 20, I went shopping, bought a staff +3, a greenstone amulet and some scrolls. At High Hedge three rings were combined to make one ring with the attributes of all of them. It was expensive, but worth it.

Sadly my gold was not sufficient to buy all that I wanted. This means that I will have to continue to hide my true nature. That is annoying.

Realising that I was now powerful enough to take on those pesky spiders in Beregost, I did so and afterwards collected the reward. I followed this up with finding Perdue’s lost cloak and trying to return it to him.

I then went Sirene hunting and managed to kill them and the flesh golems without too much difficulty. I had to rest a lot to recoup my health, but was not ambushed by too many Sirene during my sleep.

Eventually I felt that I had enough power to take on those demons in the mine.

Heading in that direction I was ambushed by ghasts. Easy experience if time consuming.

The mines were easier than anticipated. There were no demons, just a few kobold and a half-orc called Mulahey who was easily disposed of. A blast from the wand of frost, then the necklace of missiles which as well as hurting him, wiped out most of his kobold allies. Then magic missiles and he was dead. The remaining kobold and skeletons were killed in melee.

I then sneaked out of the mine and wiped out a band of assassins using stealth, necklace of missiles and wand of frost. This just about depleted the wand of frost.

Heading southwards I investigated a cave system, killing ghasts and a revenant. The revenant hurt me badly, and it took several potions of healing to recover. In the cave where there were three ghasts, I had to use about fifteen healing potions, but eventually prevailed.

It was then time to fight Tazok. This I did with a potion of oil of speed, three blasts of wand of frost, two blasts of lightning bolt and two magic missile spells. This brought me up to level 7.

I then dealt with the caravan bandits and Tranzig, neither of which caused any problems, slept and returned to the camp.

I used stealth in the camp and discovered that I needed to head for Cloakwood next. I helped a hunter against some druids and headed into a spider infested area. I had to use far too many potions of slow poison for my liking, so decided to continue using stealth. Perhaps I can return when a bit stronger.
