Tutu run update 1.5,

Hear text as mp3 file

A walk in the woods... by Sarah (tree-doctor and part time bodyguard);

The dark and spooky turned out to be some Kobolds and a Cleric… he never knew what killed him. We followed the peon trail, killing the iron throne lackeys until we found their main camp… the occasional charm, some command spell knockouts and LOTS of fireballs later we stood amongst the ruins of someone's little empire of evil.

No sooner than we sell the loot and purchased "Claw of Kazgaroth" for Viconia, do we hear about new trouble in the cloakwood so naturally I insisted we side with the Druids against the city born hunter and then Puk killed a spider-lover with lightning before the blue blob could finish telling us her master plan or summon her extra guards… quick and the dead, ******!

baldr022.jpgbaldr023.jpgbaldr024.jpgbaldr025.jpgbaldr026.jpgbaldr027.jpg

We came across a better Bard named Eldoth in the woods before entering the new mine and convinced him to replace Garrick then we set about freeing the slave miners… frankly I couldn't give a toss for the fate of some dusty humans but whatever hurts the plans of my shadowy enemy is good in my eyes.

The final boss of the mine was almost a challenge because he likes lightning as well and confined areas makes them tend to bounce about. Puk decided to solo this guy because of his special storm-shield but Viconia helped by adding skeletons and Shar-teel cleared the traps… in the end, Davaeorn was torn apart by bony fingers as he desperately tried to find a spell that would do jack against them.

Time for some r&r;
We were chatting with the local police chief and she told us that we will find the city-gates open now that the immediate danger has ended so we agreed to go play hero for the slickers… I'm not normally very keen to visit the cities but I must admit that, the lure of some rest from these constant assassination attempts on Puk is tempting.

Fit the squeamish finally came upon Sarevok. His cohorts fell out amongst themselves when Fit went invisible in the middle of a Cloudkill. They all converged on where he had been and then started fighting.

Those that were left, he lured into a corner and went invisible again.

It was then time to weaken Sarevok by backstabbing, first with a small sword and then when he was weakened with fists.

I have never seen this before.

Baldr019-1.jpg

A bug has been ironed out that stopped Sarevok becoming unconcious.

Tazok was invisible, so i spawned some monsters so that I could confuse him into killing Sarevok.

Unfortunately hobgoblins were spawned that shot Sarevok before I could stop them. :(

Final stats:

Final experience 630. Just wondering what the minimum experience for completing the game is. With vanilla, it should be less than that as no experience for learning spells, disarming traps and unlocking chests.

 Well done Mr pacifist!

Without the thief XP it's possible to have 0 experience up to the final battle - I did that some while ago (there's no locks or traps you have to use thief skills for so you could get 0 even with thief XP in your installation).  Annoyingly though, the XP for Sarevok is not for his death, but quest XP for getting to that stage.  You thus can't avoid that even if you're not directly responsible for his death (at least in a BGT installation).

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 54 - (update 2)

Jackie, halfling thief (Grond0) & Pariah, dwarf cleric (Gate70)

There was more risky play in this session, although no further deaths.

The duo made their way north searching for Ulgoth's Beard (which is in a different location to BGT, so we had a quick trip to zombie land as a bonus destination).  On the way Jackie stealthed in to rob the ankheg's nest - though I forgot the delay on stealth that BGEE introduces and only just had time to hide before an ankheg arrived.  Jackie couldn't carry the body, but was able to pick it up while stealthed and then shove it up through the ground to Pariah to hand over to the farmer.

After completing their shopping they made their way south again to relieve Meilum of his gauntlets (and his life).  Jackie looked in Pariah's inventory and commented that the gauntlets of weapon expertise had been given a new icon.  Pariah responded too late that he had left the gauntlets on the ground and was carrying gauntlets of fumbling .  Fortunately, as a cleric he was able to do a swap for the intended pair after a rest.  Pariah also wanted to see how skeletons would do against Kahrk in that area - the answer was not too well and the duo were happy to see the edge of the map arrive.

Next they moved on to the Nashkel mine.  Mulahey spotted Jackie when his stealth failed (he is a he, though from his picture you might think he has certain gender issues).  That was a potential problem, but Pariah proved the speedier to cast hold person.  Outside, the amazons proved surprisingly difficult to kill after 3 of them were silenced and Lamalha got her voice back in time to hold Jackie.  However, Pariah saved against another hold and successfully tanked her to save the day again.

Nimbul failed to survive a backstab.  Tranzig survived one, but lost his morale and was quickly cut down anyway.  At the bandit camp Pariah moved forward confidently and was successful with another hold person on Taugosz.  Jackie had some stealthing problems though and was caught by one critical bandit arrow for 18 damage.  With nearly all the bandits dead he was then hit by another critical from one arriving from an unexpected direction.  However, he still felt comfortable with his remaining 3 HPs and disdained Pariah's increasingly urgent requests for him to use a potion :P.

Inside the tent Pariah successfully silenced everyone, allowing skeletons to join in the attack.  This screenshot suggests the use of some sort of area effect damage, but in fact it just reflects that Venkt, Raemon and Britik were all cut down virtually simultaneously.  The duo will be moving on to the Cloakwood next time.

Stats:

Jackie, thief 6, 37 HPs, 104 kills

Pariah, cleric 6, 43 HPs, 72 kills, 1 death

I'll have to admit to some confusiom Grond0. Isn't this post supposed to be in the BG2 Thread?

Spectre - human monk (update 4)

Spectre had his first near death experience in this session, but survived to tell the tale ...

He began by attempting to collect a ransom, but couldn't remember where he put the ransom note - oh well, monks shouldn't be thinking about armour anyway.

Next, he visited the de'Arnise Hold - just for XP as there's no equipment he wanted there.  The trolls offered little threat and he quickly disposed of those - he was also not bothering to loot anything which made progress rapid.  The yuan-ti mage and Glaicas were webbed, while the only golem to lay a fist on Spectre was the iron one - he was about to retreat when he noticed he'd managed to stun it.  He tried out silence on an umber hulk, but that had no effect.  However, his summons provided sufficient distraction while he drew out and clobbered the well-fed hulks.  Spectre got to level 17 early on there and to level 18 for finishing TorGal off while he was failing to inflict any damage on Ras.  He turned down the offer of taking a stronghold before moving on to Umar Hills.

At Umar he acquired Ilbratha for his sword collection before moving on to the ruined temple.  He was careful to avoid being attacked by shadow fiends (using speed and stealth rather than switching to Arbane) while moving through the early stages of that.  Answering the idol's riddle got him to level 19 (getting his final saving throw reduction to take his standard spell saving throw down to -1).

For the first big group of undead Spectre pulled the others away from the lich by sending in a fireball from distance.  He then tried to strand the lich in the firepit by showing himself briefly and running away.  A symbol stun followed him though and as the lich ignores his stealth it followed him as well, which looked like bad news.  Rather than attacking him though, the lich cast a series of spells that were mainly wasted, though a wail of the banshee could easily have killed him.  However, things still looked grim when the lich eventually got around to summoning an efreeti.  Fortunately, it also wasted some time casting spells and Spectre still had decent HPs left when he finally recovered his senses.  A bit of running round ended with the efreeti being clobbered.  Spectre then waited while he regenerated in order to finish off the lich. To be safe he used a potion of invulnerability for the second lich after it had used its dispels.  The Shade Lord died in the follow-up to a sunray, providing Spectre with a WW for level 20.

Spectre then aimed to take revenge on Thaxy for the fate of my last monk to visit there and this time his plans worked perfectly.  He used his summons to draw out a wing buffet and dispel and then threw darts until Thaxy's PFMW wore off.  Once engaged (protected by a first use of mirrors) he waited until his fists drew first blood and then used his newly learnt WW - that proved sufficient.

Not a worries dude, I'm looking forward to joining you in a monk crusade at some point.  One thing that cheeses me off about EE is that the Sun Soul Monk & the Dark Moon Monk can't use quarterstaves.  That just does NOT seem right to me.  There's even a really nice pick in BG2:EE of what is a very ninja esque female monk with a staff slung over her shoulders.  :(

Well, you can play a kensai (preferably with Kit Revisions mod), give him a staff and pretend it's a monk. I think you can also alter his appearance to monk.

Spectre {2} - human monk (update 1)

After his first incarnation provided a tasty snack for a dragon, I'm about to restart Spectre.  However, this time I thought I would impose a few more than my normal restrictions on him, i.e.
1)  He's not allowed to make use of any items that require activation - so no scrolls, wands, potions or summons.
2)  He's not allowed to use any weapons apart from his fists.

He can use his monk special abilities and Bhaal powers.  Together with stealth I think that should give him a chance of making progress, though I suspect it's going to be hard work ...

Edit: realised I hadn't taken a starting save for him.  Fortunately I very quickly rolled up a slight improvement over his original stats - that's welcome given that his restrictions mean no use of tomes.

Tutu run update 1.6,

Hear text as mp3.

City shopping... by Imoen (Thief-Mage and totally rocking these new pink robes);
We were approached by the local guild and given an easy caper… I even found a "Manual of Quickness of Action" for Puk then a mage rapist asked for our help getting his next toy but we stopped his sick scheme dead and ransacked his place for a "Tome of Clear Thought" * and a nice protection ring for Viconia then stopped for a rest at a ship inn, docked at the docks where two brawny girls put 'the moves' on Viconia and it turned into a fight… nice loot again thou.

This fight got us thinking about wands and how we should kick the dead weight and Eldoth started complaining about going to see his girl so we said goodbye to him and Shar-teel then hired a powerful (looney) Thief/ Cleric named Tiax before backtracking to get Edwin. Now everyone in our party can cast from a wand except for Sarah of course but she uses her daggers to stop casters from casting so it's almost the same thing.

baldr028.jpgbaldr029.jpgbaldr030.jpgbaldr031.jpg

With Shar-teel gone we asked Viconia to tank for us now and we set off to upgrade her armour;
We got her a nice "Helm of Balduran" from an aptly named inn called the Helm and Cloak then started yet another huge fight before heading over to the Blushing Mermaid and running into Larze for another new fight… this is becoming a regular theme with us it seems? We talked to Quenash next but when we asked for Vail's cloak she didn't believe us so I turned her into a rodent and Tiax then had no trouble getting the cloak from her… a good thing because we didn't want to start a new fight in here.

baldr032.jpgbaldr033.jpgbaldr034.jpgbaldr035.jpg

Scar tried to recruit us for some double-gang-banging but we weren't in the mood so we raided the Iron Throne for a spell-fest against the false Emissary Tar, Aasim, Alai, Diyab, Naaman, Zhalimar Cloudwulfe and Gardush… no real evidence but plenty of suspicious documents pointing back to my old stomping ground so the duke wants us to return home and have a look around for him.

* After some discussion this item went to Sarah.

Spectre {2} - human monk (update 2)

Spectre has had a good opening to his new adventures ...

Normally my characters start by killing Shoal from range.  Spectre is restricted to use of his fists, but was still able to kill her without giving her a chance to talk by attacking from stealth before immediately retreating (level 3).

He used his better weapon speed to kill the gnoll with Karlat's sword without giving it the chance to attack back before moving on to Beregost.  Talking to Marl there got him to level 4.  An ogrillon was stunned to get Mirianne's letter and a hobgoblin relieved of some boots.  With the improved stealth ability from those Spectre hid round pillars while beating Karlat up.

At the Nashkel carnival he practiced more attack and retreat before someone could start a conversation - this time killing Vitiare without giving him the chance to do any pick-pocketing.

Spectre moved on to the basilisk area.  Normally I would use a green scroll to kill the basilisks, but with Spectre not being allowed to do that he recruited Korax immediately and used him to disable and kill all the basilisks.  Attacking Kirian's party though he was only able to paralyse Kirian herself before dying and Spectre just ran away.  By now he was up to level 6 with, like his namesake, excellent HPs (49 compared to average 42.5).

An ogre was stunned for his belt collection (finished off with a first use of LMD) on the way to the FAI.  On arrival there Tarnesh didn't survive being stunned.  Further north and Spectre helped Tenya with some fishermen and robbed an ankheg nest using stealth.  He took damage for the first time in the run when attacking the ankheg near Tenya and having to make a hasty retreat.  At Ulgoth's Beard he healed up and bought the Cloak of Displacement (his restrictions allow that as it's a passive magic item rather than being activated).

Returning to High Hedge he found he had just enough money to buy the Claw of Kazgaroth.  With that in hand he will be heading to the Nashkel mine next.

Spectre {2} - human monk (third and final update)

Spectre stealthed through the Nashkel mine until Mulahey joined the crowd realising how difficult it is to have a conversation with someone who appears from nowhere and pummels you.

After resting to heal the trap damage from the mine Spectre stunned Nimbul before doing a bit of dodging in and out of the inn while tackling Neira.  Tranzig saved against 4 stunning blows and got some damage of his own in before being finished off.

At the Bandit Camp Spectre stealthed into the main tent.  He briefly equipped Mulahey's boots to ensure the trap there wouldn't kill him before investigating the chest and stealthing out again.

I didn't much fancy trying the Cloakwood web traps without invisibility or free action so went back to Ulgoth's Beard to pick up Dushai's ring.  That allowed Spectre to get safely to the Cloakwood Mine.  However, rather than take Drasus on immediately he went on a long detour to the Cloudpeaks to get Krumm's belt.  With that equipped he returned to the mine and showed himself to Drasus in order to try and pull him away alone.  That was successful and his odds looked good when he got a stunning blow in on Drasus to get him up to wounded status.  Using his greater weapon speed Spectre could normally avoid any retaliation while hitting and running away, but his plan was upset when a Black Talon Elite put in a surprise appearance.  That resulted in him taking a nasty critical from Drasus and the sensible thing to do then would have been to run off the edge of the map.  However, Drasus was almost dead himself and Spectre tried for one final hit.  Unfortunately, with the Black Talon having cut off his intended movement area, he tried cutting a corner on a different circuit slightly too tightly and Drasus got another attack in ...

@Grond0: Sorry to hear Specter(2) going down. Sounds like a good place for a healing or invis potion, but guess you don't use those...it almost seems silly to put restrictions on monks, they are already so restricted anways, no launchers other than slings, no two hand weapons, only one handers, and even then only thief usable weapons - combined with no armor....

You letting your monk use cleric wands? They can in PnP - use it to blast drassus or the black talon dead....

Previous monks had been free to use cleric wands - and had occasionally done so in BG1.  I was just interested in experimenting to see how far a monk could go using only his own abilities.  I think it should be possible to complete SoA like that, though there would be some encounters along the way that would not be realistically possible (like Kangaxx).

Tutu run update 1.7,

Hear text as mp3,

Three Clerics too victory … by Puk;

We court up to the pray in Candlekeep and dispatched them without effort… I would never give up the special relationship I have with TALOS but I also have to admit that having thief skills makes Tiax much more useful to the party during the catacombs under Candlekeep.

I wanted to take a "Manual of Bodily Health" from some Sirine's so we summoned 5 skeletons to tank without falling to their charms and dispatched the bitches from range before returning to the Blushing Mermaid for a rest. Two new assassins tried to ambush us as we made our way into the under sewers but the guy fell to a 'Doom' | 'command' combo and without him to protect her the Mage was dagger bait for Sarah.

baldr036.jpgbaldr037.jpgbaldr038.jpgbaldr039.jpg

I missed my half-brother at his office but did find an incriminating journal which proved my cause to the remaining two Dukes… once I saved their stupid asses from an obvious ambush that is. Concentrated wand attacks made this battle a simple one and the only real issue was keeping the peons from killing the weaker girl Duke before we could get it under control.

My sister has her uses, revealing the maze layout and remembering to bring dispel arrows along with her 'cloudkill' scroll she insisted would win a battle for us but the real saver of my hide this final battle was Viconia.

I used a 'Farsight' to find him standing on his own at the back of the temple (obviously a trap of some sort) so we drew him to us with that 'cloudkill' scroll while Edwin used his wand to keep up a steady flow of fodder between us and my brother's blades.

This worked fine until Angelo and Semaj showed up to help him… Angelo was especially annoying with his fireball arrows which thinned out our summons and got a lucky kill on Edwin while the rest of us concentrated on dispatching Semaj. Naturally the last of my brothers peons picked this opportune time to make his appearance and we looked like going down. Tiax grabbed | tossed the summoning wand to my sister Imoen and Viconia shouted "for SHAR" as she stepped up to tank both Sarevok and Tazok, at the same time!

baldr040.jpgbaldr041.jpgbaldr042.jpgbaldr043.jpg

On the up side Angelo, finally seemed to run out of fireball arrows so we finished him off as Viconia guzzled all the health potions our party could feed her. We killed Tazok next because he was the lesser evil and Viconia eventually fell to the inedible but her heroism already sealed his fate. Imoen had enough peons out to hold him so switched back to spamming her squirrel maker and Sarevok soon found himself looking up at his doom from the floor.

Spectre {3} - human monk (update 1)

I thought I would have another go at a monk limited to fists and not able to use any items requiring activation.

A summary of his main encounters to date and method of completing them is as follows:
- Shoal.  Stealth attacks.
- Mirianne's ogrillons.  Stealth & stun.
- Karlat. Stealth round pillars.
- Oopah. Stealth.
- Meilum. Stealth (using speed advantage to quickly run out of sight between attacks).
- Basilisks.  Followed Korax into action (left Kirian's party alone).
- Tarnesh. One-shot stealth attack.
- Ankhegs.  Cleared the nest attacking in melee; retreating whenever ankhegs switched to melee (had to retreat to Ulgoth's Beard Inn twice to heal up to avoid the possibility of a critical killing him).
- Tenya.  One hit persuaded her to accept the bodies of the fishermen.
- Greywolf.  Stealth & stun.
- Mulahey. Stealth attacks (from outside conversation range).
- Neira. Stealth & stun.
- Nimbul.  Stealth - missed with his stunning attacks (had to return to Mulahey's cave to read his letters before finding Nimbul!)

He reached L7 with the death of Nimbul and is looking good so far - he's not had any dangerous moments yet.    The decision to keep the same name seems to have been a good one as, like his predecessors, he has excellent HPs (58 compared to average of 49).

Spectre {3} - human monk (update 2)

Spectre has continued to make good progress and has only got the final encounters to go - though there are still significant challenges associated with those.  A summary of his recent encounters is as follows:

- Tranzig.  Stealth attacks (stun failed, but the mage was finished with a LMD).
- Bandit camp.  Stealthed in to tent to read letters and stealthed out again.
- Dushai.  Melee.
- Cloakwood.  Stealthed through traps using Dushai's ring.
- Caldo & Krumm.  Stun (single ability accounted for both after first was one-shot with a critical).
- Drasus.  Pulled away by himself.  Successfully stunned twice and 2 LMD and a final melee hit finished him off.
- Daveorn.  Stealthed down through the mine and killed Daveorn's guard with stealth attacks.  Decoyed the battle horrors into a side room and left them there using stealth before going upstairs to rest and heal the trap damage.  Coming back down attracted Daveorn's attention and successfully went into stealth before he could cast a lightning bolt.  Then pulled him to the stairs in order to be able to run from his spells, but Daveorn's spell sequence seemed to have been upset by Spectre's rest or stealthing and he never actually attempted to cast anything more.
- Iron Throne.  With nothing to buy in the City and with his personal restrictions not allowing the use of tomes Spectre went straight to stealth into the Iron Throne to question Thaldorn before reporting to Duke Eltan.
- Candlekeep.  With no reason to investigate the tombs Spectre just stealthed past all the enemies and rested to pick up a couple of DUHMs.
- Ramazith.  Using DUHM, Spectre could break down the mage's door.  His stun failed twice and he dodged out of the tower to avoid spells before finishing the job with a stealth attack.

Spectre {3} - human monk (3rd and final update)

Spectre has completed his task of finishing BG1 without using any weapons other than his fists and not using any magic items requiring activation.  To do that he did have to resort to cheating to counter-act a bug in the final battle.  I'm never happy when that happens, but I think he deserves the chance to have a go at BG2 after his hard work in BG1.

Spectre started off the final encounters by pulling Slythe away from his girlfriend before disappearing into stealth.  He got 2 stunning attacks in, but Slythe saved against both before Spectre's stealth failed and he had to run away.  He was hit a couple of times in the process so went to the temple for healing before coming back under stealth for another attack.  He followed that up with a horror, which successfully scared Slythe, but he moves so quickly Spectre was unable to hit him during that - though he did land a couple of LMDs.  His second horror was also successful and he did manage several hits this time - taking Slythe to the verge of death.  However, Spectre had been hit in the act of casting the horror and was now in danger of being killed by a critical hit, so left for the temple before the horror ended.  As the action in one area pauses when a party leaves for another though, Slythe was still running around scared when Spectre got back and one final hit finished him off before he could recover.

After resting (to get his Bhaal abilities back) Spectre moved on to the palace.  After buffing with DUHM he showed himself and used horror - that gave a decent result by affecting 2 of the dopplegangers.  His second horror was even more successful by scaring 3 more, leaving only a single one attacking - and it didn't last long.  However, hunting down the scared dopplegangers was always going to be a problem and Spectre only managed to kill 1 more before they recovered.  He then tried attacking 1 in a fair fight, but was quickly losing that and had to start running.  He tried running round that doppleganger to get the Flaming Fist to attack it, but in the enclosed space that was difficult and first one then another doppleganger joined in - having in the meantime killed Liia.  Deciding it was time to get cheesy Spectre ran out of the palace with 3 dopplegangers chasing him.  He then used his speed and stealth to avoid them and heal at the temple before coming back to kill them with stealth attacks.  That hit a snag when the last of the 3 got scared and ran through a locked door.  Spectre finished off the remaining one in the palace and then rested.  With DUHM he was able to break down the door and kill the doppleganger.  Back in the palace Belt had been patiently waiting and was fortunately still prepared to hear Spectre's accusation of Sarevok and send Spectre after him.

Spectre went to repurchase the boots of grounding sold some time previously and then rested before heading into the maze.  His fists couldn't hurt the mustard jellies, but he used stealth attacks to kill the other slimes, the doom guards and the skeleton warriors.  He got to level 8 with the first of the skeletons - getting just the 4 HPs, though he's still comfortably above average.  Wearing the boots of grounding allowed him to trigger the lightning traps without too much danger and he moved on through the remainder of the maze before resting and healing.  He stealthed past the Undercity party and into the temple.

Inside the temple he triggered the lightning trap near the pillar he's intending to use for hiding before resting again.  At an earlier stage of the run I was worried about this battle because I couldn't use my normal means of pulling Sarevok out alone (sling or wand magic missile).  I had forgotten about Spectre's LMD ability at that stage and tried using the first of those - only for Sarevok to ignore it entirely.  The second one of those I stayed in sight a bit longer - with the result that Angelo also noticed Spectre and sent a remove magic after him.  Fortunately he didn't follow up in person though and Spectre commenced running Sarevok round while hiding.  That still wasn't an easy battle as without buffs Spectre failed to hide most of the time, when he did attack he failed to hit most of the time and when he did hit his damage was much lower than it would have been with decent strength.  Sarevok got an early hit here (mainly repaired by lay on hands) due to the difficulty of pausing and unpausing round the pillars and I turned my normal autopause on enemy sight off at that point as a result.  That meant that Sarevok had no chance of a successful attack unless I made a mistake.  There was one of those over the course of 40 minutes or so as Spectre gradually ground the big man down to badly wounded, which meant that a big critical hit could have killed Spectre, but the odds still seemed strongly in his favour when Sarevok disappeared into a crack in the wall.

I knew where Sarevok was as Spectre couldn't move over a particular point, but he wouldn't appear.  With that particular bug you can get enemies to show themselves by doing damage to them and I wondered whether using horror would get him to come out, but it didn't.  I suppose I might have been able to activate him by bringing his friends into the fight, but Spectre wouldn't have had much chance against the lot of them and in the end I felt justified in CLUAing in the necklace of missiles to get him to appear.  As payment for that I intended Spectre to get caught in the blast, but poor pathfinding meant he was immediately afterwards also caught in a lightning trap and almost died.  Meanwhile, Sarevok was occupied with an invulnerable summoned chicken to prevent him slicing down Spectre as he appeared out of thin air - it was disposed of using ctrl+Y once Spectre was out of Sarevok's reach.

Now that any hit on him would definitely be fatal Spectre had to be even more careful.  However, another half an hour of hard work saw him land the further dozen or so blows required until Sarevok finally signalled that he had had enough.  Spectre rested to heal and then reported in to Duke Belt.  He's just arrived in Athkatla - here's his current character record.
