Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 55 - (update 3)

Johnnie, human abjurer (Grond0) & Cower, elf thief (Gate70)

A rare evening session saw this duo cover much of their remaining work, although they needed a big slice of luck on the way.

In the Cloakwood mine they sneaked most of the time down to Davaeorn.  Cower's trap detection ability was insufficient to spot the final trap and he was taken down to 12 HP as a result.  Once healed he used stealth attacks on Davaeorn - successfully getting him to waste nearly all his spells to make him an easy victim.  Neither Johnnie, nor Cower had any attack that could hurt the mustard jelly, but Cower attacked anyway to pull it out of the way in order to sneak in and grab the treasure it guarded.

After picking up some reputation for flooding the mine a few more reputation tasks were done to raise that up to 20.  Cower also benefited from reading the charisma tome while doing those tasks.  Then it was time to travel up to Ulgoth's Beard - Johnnie using invisibility to loot the ankheg nest on the way.  Coming back to Baldur's Gate we were surprised to find that BGEE changes the travel location to the bridge area and both characters took damage from the ankheg waiting there as a result.

In the City the duo picked up the tomes without problems - backstabs and MMs accounting for Ramazith and Jalantha.  However, Marek proved more of a problem.  No protection against confusion was used - the intention being that Johnnie would talk to him and then use invisibility to disappear (causing Marek to abort his spell).  However, the inability to pause easily in multiplayer meant that Johnnie's invisibility spell cast almost simultaneously with chaos - which affected both our heroes.  Things looked distinctly dodgy when Marek released a lightning bolt - hitting both Cower and Johnnie.  Johnnie was still invisible at this stage, but confusion was likely to make her attack something and become an easy victim for Marek.  Therefore it was extremely lucky when Marek used another lightning bolt which bounced to kill Cower - but only after also killing himself.  Johnnie did eventually attack an innocent to take reputation down to 10, but contented herself with a single victim.

Cower sneaked into the Iron Throne to talk to Thaldorn before reporting to Duke Eltan for duty in Candlekeep.

Stats:

Johnnie, abjurer 6, 34 HPs (incl. 6 from familiar), 85 kills

Cower, thief 7, 51 HPs, 86 kills, 1 death

My next goal was to explore & train in & around the beautiful Dryad Falls that I’d learned about as a boy in Candlekeep but had never actually seen. En route w/had to kill an angry Cave Bear accompanied by a Mountain Bear but the Mountain Bear was docile toward our presence, even when we battled the Cave Bear. With Jaheira, a Druid Priestess, among us as we are careful to leave nature unmolested if possible, often trying to charm a hostile animal in order to avoid killing him. Afterward we defeated four Winter Wolves, two Dire Wolves in a small cave near the falls, two wolves, eight Gnolls & six Xvarts. We also encountered two thugs who were about to cut down a beautiful tree. Again, w/a Druid counted among my companions, this was not acceptable. Imoen tried to talk sense to them but they became hostile & we defeated them for little gain. (Note: the Dryad didn’t appear but I played it through all the same).

Key Event:  I prefer in this journal to highlight those key moments in my adventures yet, at times, there is little to highlight. In this case, it was interesting to come upon a small band, four Gnolls, who demanded gold for me to pass. As this was unacceptable, we came to combat. The Gnolls fell easily. As an aside, I don’t allow us of our precious spells (except in rare circumstance & only @ my direct request) against humanoids, animals, minor undead, etc. We can easily defeat these creatures w/o wasting spells that we might come to regret not having later in a more challenging melee. During these encounters, Minsc & I assault forward to direct the enemies attention toward the two of us. Behind us, Khalid forms the rest into a ‘V’ & all use their ranged weapons, most of the time I direct the target so that we concentrate all six of us on one @ a time.

Blackheart after dualling to mage, went round finishing off all the half finished quests. Went to the mayor of Nashkel, the Priestess near baldur's gate, talked to farmer Brun, got the reward for killing Bassilus, took news to Mirianne etc. etc. This got him to level 5. The next level had to be earned, killing bandits and half-ogres north west of Nashkel and the like. Getting his fighter powers back does not now seem quite so ridiculous, though he still wonders wheher or not he should have dualled at a lower level.

To kill Tranzig more safely, Algernon was charmed first to take the brunt of the spells that were thrown. This of course gave the added bonus of getting the cloak without losing reputation.

The want of frost was used against Tranzig together witth a few magic missiles.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 55 - (4th and final update)

Johnnie, human abjurer (Grond0) & Cower, elf thief (Gate70)

After having a fortunate escape in the previous session this pair's luck ran out today with a vengeance.

At Candlekeep Cower disarmed the traps to loot the tombs before leading an assault on the dopplegangers.  Prat & co were bypassed, but Cower did make use of a green scroll from the Iron Throne to deal with the basilisks.

Back in Baldur's Gate equipment was sorted out before going to take on Slythe.  Johnnie summoned some monsters with a newly acquired wand and set those to attack Slythe.  However, the monsters summoned were lower quality than expected (another change in BGEE) and Slythe swiftly one-shotted 5 dogs and 5 hobgoblins.  Cower managed one backstab during that, but would have been in trouble if Slythe had not soaked up one too many magic missiles.

At the palace Cower started off firing dispelling arrows, before switching to arrows of biting.  Meanwhile Johnnie opened with a malison and followed that up with darts of stunning and then an emotion.  Things looked pretty straightforward when 1 of the dopplegangers died and 4 more were immobilised by the emotion - meaning that less than 2 rounds into the contest there was only 1 doppleganger active.  Unfortunately the dopplegangers had been ignoring the summoned dogs and Belt died very shortly after the emotion was cast (I think he has considerably fewer HPs than in BGT, while the dopplegangers hit at least as hard as they did).  Less than 3 rounds had gone and the last doppleganger was seriously wounded - but Liia was also dead!

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 56 - (1st and final update)

Regret, half-elf conjurer (Grond0) & Fabdab, half-elf jester (Gate70)

After the previous pair's unfortunate end at the palace we generated a new random combination and started again.

Shoal provided an initial level up and a bit of work around Beregost then went smoothly enough.  However, that wasn't to last when taking on Karlat.  He was badly damaged from a few spells and the effects of being shot while confused, but was still gamely chasing Regret.  He lost contact with him for a moment as the mage rounded a pillar and that would have been expected to end his personal attack round.  Unfortunately, it didn't work that way and, as the mage was running back past him, his axe lashed out to kill him - making that the third character I'd had killed in a single day :alien:.

Grond0/Gate70 - sorry to hear the end of your your two MP attempts. Karlat can hit pretty hard, best to deal with him at level 3 in my experience (if only two people) (or if you have an arcane with two blinds). But you probably already knew that...tough break in the Palace fights...that sure is a chaotic fight, probably the fight I'm not sure about many times.

Best of luck in your new MP run.

Blackstaff cleared the bandit camp except for the tent. Then lured the enemy outside where he could use the wand of fire in safety. The poisonous arrows plus equally damaging spells were disastrous for him and sadly he died. :crying:

Next time decide to dual a berserker, I will do it at level 3 or include him in a party.

Sorry to hear about Blackstaff Wise - by the way, you CAN use the wand of fire scorcher mode in the tent safely and I've found it to be quite effective. You could easily catch 3 enemies at once with that, targeting Venkt and moving around to catch the melees in the fire.

Yes you do. However, if you aim at Venkt (lower left) and move up and right, your scorcher never comes anywhere near him - you would practically have to be at the chest to kill him with a scorcher this way and there would be no need to move up that far left.

I am quite sure that it were not for Gorion's help, I would never have been able to become a paladin despite the fact that I had all the attributes needed except one, namely being human. As a Sylvan elf, I am quite sure that my request would have been turned down.

With stats of Str 19, Dex 19, Con 17, Int 13, Wis 13, Cha 16 I was able to become a Champion of Torm, the exact type of paladin that I desired to be. So far, I have survived Candlekeep and have headed out into the big, bad world where Gorion met his demise.

Wrecking Crew X (update 1)

I thought it was about time to have another go with my group of high-stat dwarven fighters.  They all have full proficiency points in melee weapons (shown below), though they will principally use ranged weapons for fighting in BG1.

After Candlekeep they started off by killing Shoal and cleared the rest of that area except the sirines - getting to level 2 in the process.  I remembered too late that perhaps I should have encouraged Shoal to show the group where to find the Helm of Defense ...

Some tasks in Beregost were done, though I talked to Zhurlong with the wrong character and just got robbed as a result.  Then the Crew started to tick off areas - helping Arabelle and clearing that area took the group to level 3.  Swinging through the Cloakwood then got them to level 4.

As seems fair for dwarves they will be trying to minimise use of magic (other than weapons and armour).  Thus far they haven't used any - all HP recovery being through resting.  Typically I've been switching the order of characters round while fighting in order to spread damage among the group.  There have been no deaths so far.

Tribune (hammer) - fighter 4, 48 HPs, 37 kills
Flange (flail) - fighter 4, 42 HPs, 52 kills
Ace (axe) - fighter 4, 35 HPs, 101 kills
Max (mace) - fighter 4, 51 HPs, 39 kills
Chaste (club) - fighter 4, 41 HPs, 39 kills
Slane (long sword) - fighter 4, 41 HPs, 59 kills

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I last posted here. I'm glad to see that there's still some interesting activity going on here :) After a few months of not playing and after a suprisingly easy playthrough with an SCS-tweaked Shapeshifter (up to the point where I got bored with her) earlier this week, I decided to roll another Wizard Slayer, Hardeth Keenhammer, and give her a go in a simple BG Enhanced Edition playthrough, with SCS v28 as the only mod. The Wizard Slayer I'm playing is unmodded, but note that the kit has been granted the spellfailure penalty ability for ranged hits in the vanilla enhanced edition.

I posted my progress in the BGEE forums which has the advantage of not having to upload my screenshots elsewhere, BUT I forgot that teh Bioware forums don't support the bmp format.

Hardeth is already level 7 and has just cleared the Nashkel Mines. Those of you who are interested can read of her progress so far here and here.

Subsequent updates I will post here with screenshots in jpg.

Are you a true elf Wise... i.e. long'bow and long'sword?

With Champion of Torm, that would be impossible as no ranged weapons and expertise in Two-Handed Swords only. Because of that I am considering whether I should have chosen a Dragonslayer. They can ONLY specialise in Long Swords and Bastard Swords. Sadly no dragons in BG1. There is a mod that in troduces one in Cloakwood though, but I think the most recent edition nerfs it a lot. I'll have to check.

My current Champion has reached level 6 and not yet gone to the mines. I think he should be shelved in favour of a more suitable kit.

After that a gnomish or dwarven Champion of Torm perhaps

Restarted with an Sylvan Elf Dragonslayer, (Paladin Kit)   ** Long Sword ** Sword and Shield. Although I cannot put proficiency points in bows, :(  I can use them. :) I get +4 against Dragons. Not much help in BG1. Is a moonblade wielder which should help. Name: Elrohir Elruch

I am quite sure that it were not for Gorion's help, I would never have been able to become a paladin despite the fact that I had all the attributes needed except one, namely being human. As a Sylvan elf, I am quite sure that my request would have been turned down.

Wrecking Crew X (update 2)

I did a bit more with the Crew yesterday.  Progress was generally fairly smooth, although my tendency to take risks caused a bit of a problem in their last encounter (nothing like the problems Gate70 and I had in multiplayer today, but that's another story ...).  Encounters of interest included:

- Tribune was poisoned by Zekar, but hobgoblin poison is weak and he only lost half his HPs.
- Bassilus's family failed to die, which would have been very dangerous for anyone held, but both the cleric's spell attempts were interrupted.
- at Firewine I couldn't be bothered with making painful progress through the ruins and also wimped out of an encounter with Kahrk.
- clearing the Valley of the Tombs got everyone to level 5 and they celebrated by mobbing the Revenant (everyone had a magic weapon by that point, though only half of them ones they are proficient in).
- they quickly made their way through the Nashkel Mine and disposed of Mulahey.
- attacking the amazons while fatigued and already wounded proved a step too far for Flange, who became the first victim of the run.  At this stage the amazons were still being competitive, but the tide turned after Axe survived a poisoned dart with 1 HP left.  In despair Lamalha committed suicide by glyph.

Tribune (hammer) - fighter 5, 54 HPs, 63 kills
Flange (flail) - fighter 5, 54 HPs, 97 kills
Ace (axe) - fighter 5, 43 HPs, 155 kills
Max (mace) - fighter 5, 57 HPs, 71 kills
Chaste (club) - fighter 5, 53 HPs, 79 kills
Slane (long sword) - fighter 5, 48 HPs, 88 kills
HP rolls so far have been pretty poor, with none of the Crew above the average (which is 57  for level 5 fighters with constitution of 19).

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 57 - (2nd and final update)

Triad, human invoker (Grond0) & Brozar, dwarf priest of Talos (Gate70)

This pair were rolled up last time, but failed to spread their wings much in today's session.  A guard in Candlekeep was annoyed at Triad for stealing a potion and chased him around for a while.  I was too busy talking rather than concentrating on the action and the guard eventually landed a blow with his staff.  That proved immediately fatal, although in theory level 1 characters are not supposed to be killed by a single attack ...

Triaddeath_zps6bfced0a.jpg

I think that's the first time we've actually failed to get out of Candlekeep, though on the positive side that meant that Gorion was saved from yet another failure against Sarevok.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 58 - (1st and final update)

Flash, elf diviner (Grond0) & Nabitall, gnome cleric/thief (Gate70)

After the two minutes spent on the previous pair a short intermission saw the next offering fall off the conveyor belt.

They started well enough, with no problems taking down Shoal, progressing through Beregost and Nashkel and journeying to Firewine Ruins to call on Meilum.  There was a lot of lag in the game though and one result of that was that Nabitall fell some way behind Flash on the journey across the map.  To make use of the time Flash decided to see whether there were kobolds on the encounter point just the other side of the bridge.  That was done in the expectation that the first one sighted would not have a bow (which is always the case in BGT).  However, BGEE appears to have introduced an element of randomness into the enemies produced in this encounter and Flash edged into sight of a kobold commando - who immediately let fly with his bow, resulting in my second one-shot death in half an hour ...

Flashdeath_zps24b6b74f.jpg
