Diary of Durdin

Having bought a helm of charm protection, I continued to an area renowned for sirene. With the helmet, they were easy to defeat.

Baldr029.jpg

Not so the flesh golems, though I did survive.

Baldr031.jpg

I continued on to fight Melium and Khark. My magical resistance was certainly of help there.

Baldr032.jpg

Continuing on to the mines, I fought some more assassins. My necklace of missiles softened them up before I moved in with my sword.

Baldr033.jpg

The same tactic worked against Mulahey and his cohorts.

Baldr035.jpg

Sticking with a winning system, I used it again gainst some assassins outside the mines.

Baldr036.jpg

Nimbul proved to be not even a challenge.

Baldr037.jpg

I weaked Tranzig by charming some Morninglords and Mprninglord Guards. They were kellied by Tranzig, so I had to kill him myself. It did mean that I got some good armour. :)

Baldr038.jpg

I theen proceeded to the bandit camp where I used oil of speed to keep my distance from Tazok. I used a throwing dagger to kill him.

Diary of Durdin

More assassins. More deaths, this time at the bandit camp.

Baldr040.jpg

Baldr041.jpg

I then cleared the camp of its scum.

Baldr042.jpg

I went inside Tazok's tent and lured the leaders outside where, now they were bunched together, I could deal with them effectively with my necklace of missiles.

Baldr043.jpg

Baldr044.jpg

In cloakwood, the spiders proved to be no problem and my undoubted skill against dragons helped here too.

Baldr046.jpg

I was then attacked by witches:

Baldr047.jpg

Baldr048.jpg

At the mines, necklace of missiles followed by my sword proved effective.

Baldr050.jpg

I used the same taactic against hareishan:

Baldr051.jpg

Baldr052.jpg

I then fought Natasha:

Baldr053.jpg

Baldr054.jpg

The lowest level proved difficult:

Baldr055.jpg

But not unsurmountable:

Baldr056.jpg

I went to the Gate and dealt with a basilisk with the help of charmed sailors:

Baldr057.jpg

I got a corpse for Arkion, but upon testing his alignment I decided to kill him before he did any harm.

Baldr059.jpg

I took the necklace to Nemphre, but she too proved to be to evil to be left alive.

Baldr060.jpg

In the sewers, an ogre-mage killed himself and one of his pets with a lightning bolt.

Baldr061.jpg

Upon exitting the sewers, I ended up in a den of iniquity where I was attacked by Larze:

Baldr063.jpg

I then went basilisk hunting quite successfully:

Baldr064.jpg

This was followed by me killing a druid who, by his actions was evil rather than neutral.

Baldr065.jpg

At the Friendly Arms Inn I was attacked by some paladins who had been duped.

I prevailed, but at the loss of 10 points of reputation.

Baldr066.jpg

Baldr067.jpg

I therefore did quests to restore it.

Baldr067.jpg

Baldr070.jpg

Baldr071.jpg

I had just increased my level back to hero when I was attacked just outside the mines.

Baldr073.jpg[URL]

North of Nashkel, I was attacked by Teldorn fighters.

THis led me to search for some talismans:

Baldr075.jpg

I inadvertently came across the evil Valeria and killed her.

Baldr076.jpg

I found another talisman:

Baldr077.jpg

And ended up at a tower where I found the last one:

Baldr078.jpg

We were able eventually to recover the Stone of Askavaar.

Looks like you're making good progress Wise.

Salira{4} - human monk (update 1)

The new, improved model of Salira is underway (that's using improved in the normal sense for product adverts, i.e. totally unchanged).

She's managed to do about half her work in BG1 this morning and has just killed Daveorn and flooded the mine.  She will be looking to maximise reputation and get the tomes before proceeding on to Baldur's Gate.

She did have one minor glitch when she failed to save Arabelle from some marauding xvarts.  She also had one close call against Daveorn when I misjudged how quickly his lightning bolt would come through the wall and didn't have a potion of magic blocking active - if the lightning had rebounded to hit her again directly it could well have killed her.

Her HPs are currently a couple above average, so looking rather better than her last incarnation,

I don’t play solo--- I would want detect traps for solo play and suggest shadow dancer / mage for that as the point restrictions of assassin are too high. I picked assassin for the poison and was looking to backstab but she rolled very low so entering melee range with her (until much later when she gets good magic buffs) is out--- as a range character I’d say the odds of her taking the arcane option are very high.

I need Sarah to have at least 100 points in detect illusion (level  5 i.e. 10,000) and at that point she can go mage (at level 6 i.e  40,000) to recover her abilities before arriving at bg2. Mage is very easy to recover in bg because the wands are much more powerful than what a caster can hope to match.

Oh I know you don't play solo :D I mainly asked since I would be interested to see how you played an assassin mage, even though it would be a different style in a group. Shadow dancer/mage would not be able to do the things I have in mind, not a fan of EE classes anyways, but I digress.

Good luck, it seems your plan is indeed to go mage with her, I look forward to following her!

Thanks everyone!

@Corey, last link should open image of defeated Sarevok, at least here on my PC it does.

@ussnorway, those were potions of master thievery and perception.

@Grond0, yes i thought that was quite ironic...  :D I wanted some BG2 play for the moment and I was a bit disappointed with the Ducal Palace fight, hence my continuation of the Assassin run. More Wizard Slayers will definitely follow. It seems I still haven't found a certain way to keep Belt and Jannath alive with a solo Wizard Slayer. My last character was specialized in Maces because of a good Mace in BGEE, and in Flails (planning ahead toward SoA's excellent Flails), and only proficient in Darts and Short Bows. I think my next attempt will be with a Wizard Slayer specialized in Short Bows, and not relying on darts at all. I'm also undecided as to what the best melee weapon for BG1 would be. The Mace I mentioned, called Stupefier, gives a 25% chance of stunning opponent (no save), but has only a +1 enchantnment and lacks the elemental damage that makes a weapon like Varscona or Ashideena stand out. However specializing in Maces is appealing if you take BG2 in account (Mace of Disruption), whereas Long Swords or Hammers would only merit one pip at the most imo.

There are two images in the last spoiler. The 1st one works, the 2nd one takes the person to the beginning of the no-reload challenge (1st page), so that's the one with the problem.

I presume that you have used your bhaalspawn healing powers on them and also tried luring some of the enemy upstairs?

You do realise that you are luring others of us into trying to solo a Wizard Slayer?

Diary of Durdin

Went to Restenford to help peltar.

Killed an evil mage in Bonehill.

Baldr081.jpg

Then I had to deal with a wraith. Fortunately, it did not wound me. :)

Baldr082.jpg

I then had to fight a Fire Giant. However, it couldn't follow me through the entrance because of size, so I was able to kill it slowly with ranged weapons.

Baldr083.jpg

The rest of the enemies in there were relatively easy, but the skeletons outside were more of a challenge.

Baldr085.jpg

In the sewers, ranged weapons were used again.

Baldr086.jpg

And again.

Baldr087.jpg

Sirius the thief was killed.

Baldr088.jpg

Upon my return from Restenford. I was ambushed and to my dismay, I accidentally killed Gavin.

Baldr089.jpg

I raced through Candlekeep with no problems and upon leaving was again whisked off to Restenford whereupon I had to solve the problems of Garrotten. This included dealing with hordes of Lizard men.

Baldr089.jpg

Baldr092.jpg

And I eventually had to fight the mayor and her guards.

Baldr093.jpg

Fabio who was helping me set off a trap and was almost killed.

Baldr094.jpg

After solving the problems, I returned to Baldur's Gate and started solving the problems there by rescuing Duke Elatan,

Baldr095.jpg

acquiring Sarevok's Diary,

Baldr096.jpg

and acquiring an invitation to the Ducal Ceremony,

Baldr099.jpg

I killed Slythe's cohort using invisibility to get close. She was therefore unable to cast any spells.

Baldr100.jpg

The wand of sleep was highly effective in fighting the doppelgangers.

Baldr101.jpg

I then fought against the Grey Clan. (This is the first time that I killed the tattooed man in Baldur's Gate!)

Baldr103.jpg

I fought the Maulers of the Underdark and was saddened by the death of Gorpal Hind.

Baldr105.jpg

Davenport ambushed me, but I could find no door which the key that he possessed fitted.

At the FAI, I killed several powerful undead.

Baldr110.jpg

Those inside proved to be no problem.

Baldr114.jpg

I tracked their leaders to Beregost where I killed a number of them.

Baldr120.jpg

Despite beating Sarevok at the palace, I had to do a lot of running from the Flaming Fist.

Baldr124.jpg

I eventually caught up with sarevok, killing some of his minions first,

Baldr129.jpg

Baldr130.jpg

And finally killed Sarevok.

Baldr132.jpg

:)

Congrats Grimwald, excellent run, best of luck in SoA!

@Corey, you're right. I don't know what happened there. It was an image of Eydan dispelling Sarevok's haste (imo a crucial part of the final battle).

I presume that you have used your bhaalspawn healing powers on them and also tried luring some of the enemy upstairs?

You do realise that you are luring others of us into trying to solo a Wizard Slayer?

Recently I've been playing Enhanced Edition with only SCS and Rogue Rebalancing installed, which is a bit easier than my heavily modded BGT install. However it's impossible to lure the Doppelgangers upstairs (or go their yourself). So far my safest bets have been Arrows of Dispelling on each and every Doppelganger, interrupting the casters, Bhaal Horror (unreliable) and indeed healing Belt with Bhaal CLW. Even then a single Confusion by the Doppelganger Mage is likely to end the run.
Anyway I lost count, but I've started my next Wizard Slayer, hope to post some progress soon...

Salira{4} - human monk (2nd and final update)

Salira got her reputation up to 20 and did some shopping.  She was then finishing off a few sundry encounters while picking up the tomes.  When she passed by Shoal's area she couldn't resist saying hello.  The intention was for her to attack from outside Shoal's conversation range, but I obviously wasn't quite careful enough in setting that up ...

@Grond0: In my solo play-thrus, I like letting Kivan talk to Shoal (since he's nearby), then this can't happen - though it has happened to me before I had this process. What's next?

Sorry Grond0, but that was pretty funny... You seem to take it all in good spirits though. Either way my condolences.
I'm doing another Wizard Slayer, which is asking for trouble as well, especially now that I can't seem to find any Arrows of Biting that my WS wants to use against perhaps Mulahey and especially Venkt. Maybe I'll just restart with the same character if/when she falls, like you do. Easier to keep count, and less time spent re-rolling.

Bgee run update S1.2,

Hear text as mp3,

Apprenticeship by Sarah,

Gorion died for me so I guess that makes him noteworthy but I wish he would have taken the time to explain what’s going on? My foster-dads’ last instruction was to trust Jaheira, which Puk agrees is the case but I also know that my enemy (whomever that turns out to be) is aware of both me and my presumed direction of travel so I turned my steps south and promptly got lost somewhere in High Hedge.

s-baldr003.jpgs-baldr004.jpg

Fortune smiled and Kivan agreed to show me the back-ways to Nashkel and back to the FAI where sure enough an assassin mage full of hopeful enthusiasm for an easy kill, decided to try his luck--- Forget all the Bard songs, an assassin that tries to sneak up on something with a dagger is a fool--- crossbow, that’s the tool for our jobs, sturdy, accurate over range and plenty of punch!

s-baldr005.jpgs-baldr006.jpg

s-baldr007.jpgs-baldr008.jpg

We collected aunty-J and made a dash back to Nashkel without issue… so simple when you already know where it is. We scouted the way to Gnoll Stronghold, crossed the bridge when we came to it and pushed deeper into the surrounding hills to find a cave with a dusty old tome. Kivan wanted to get back to killing bandits so we returned to Nashkel once again, paid the church to get the book examined for Puk and said ciao belo to our old Ranger and G’day to a new Ranger named Minsc--- by strange coincidence he wanted to go back to the same old Stronghold and kill the Gnolls that kidnapped his mage pal.

s-baldr009.jpgs-baldr010.jpg

Khalid died on the way there, fortuitously making room for said mage and Puk levelled (with instant dual to Cleric) during an ambush on the return trip. Dynaheir agreed to identify items as payment for the daring rescue but she doesn’t fit our group so she and Minsc will step aside once we have a replacement for our now, deceased tank.

@Grond0, is solo Monk something you have your heart set on i.e. perhaps taking a group?

@Blackraven, I like thief * as anti-mage... the detect illusion skill is a no-reload powerhouse.

@corry_russell, I do like to collect a set.

*Cleric & thief work very nice together but Jan is the only (npc) bg2 that can use the skill.

@USSNorway - from what I've observed of his (Grond0's) hundreds of runs, he doesn't have the preference for the micro-management that is required for group play. There's a reason he runs at maximum fps...he is sometimes willing to "endure" the micro-management if the group play is different in some way (all warrior group, random group, etc.). I've tried to encourage him to group in the past, to little avail. Considering he has a wild mage solo trilogy success, I'd say his way of doing things seems to be working for him - just takes a lot of attempts! Which you can do quite a bit when solo, since you make rapid progress.

Grats Wise. I'm curious, what is this Moonblade your protagonist is wielding?

I mentioned this at the beginning of the run. I have made a mini-mod in which one of the assassins in candlekeep has a poisoned dagger. This makes him actually dangerous to fight. i.e. He sometimes wins. He has stolen the Moonblade, and my character reclaims it. I felt that this fitted the plot without being outrageously overpowered as with my mods a lot of the assassins have +3 weapons.

I think the question is; Does the moonblade have +3 or is it a +1?

Lore says a moonblade is part of the elf that makes it and no two are the same.
