Nice work with the kensai against Kirian, Grond0! Not an easy fight - were you protected by the green scroll from petrification during all of this?

Indeed.  All the basilisks were dead before taking on Kirian, but the scroll lasts a long time so was still showing as active in the screenshots for that fight as well.

Just realised that I posted this in BG2  Just copied it over and will delete the one in the wrong place.

Having discovered the above link I have at last been able to install SCS, though sadly without the improved AI. That part of the installation failed.

I was planning on reducing the number of mods as some were making ToSC a bit too easy, but with harder SCS battles installed, that probably will no longer be the case.

It might actually be a good thing that the Improved AI isn't installed. One step at a time. :)

Starting a new game with Blade Tormson, a champion of Torm.

Not knowing his true father, he chose his surname because of his allegience to Torm.

Baldr001.jpg

The Aasimar in the sub-race mod gives +1 Wisdom, +2 Charisma -20% experience. Flamestrike once per day.

The sub-race was chosen for role-playing reasons. Tiefling would have been more powerful, but as the mod says, most Aasimar are paladins.

Shank proved to be dangerous due to his armour, (which is useless to me) and his +2 sword (which is most useful)

Baldr000.jpg

Tarnesh was not much of a problem at all.

Thrain - dwarf kensai (update 3)

Thrain moved on pretty serenely in that session and is currently preparing for his final battles on the Sword Coast.

He started in the Cloakwood - the only stop there was to pick up a potion of invulnerability from Laskal.  At the mine he dealt with Drasus & co before moving on down through the mine.  He had the luxury of the ring of invisibility, but took very little damage anyway so didn't need it as he found his way to Daveorn.  A magic blocking potion took away his cloud giant strength, but that had already done its job on the battle horrors and Thrain got two attacks through Daveorn's mirrors while he was still trying to teleport around.

In the City the only things Thrain wanted were the tomes and he soon secured those with no problems.  After investigating the Iron Throne invisibly, he returned to Candlekeep and looted that using storm giant strength and protection from magic.  He added a Greenstone Amulet charge for safety while beating up Prat's gang (though Bor did not actually get a chance to use his darts of stunning) and another green scroll for the basilisks.

Fight of the day - Drasus & co
At the mine he used a fireball from range, retreating out of sight before anyone turned hostile - thus allowing him a second fireball.  That will often kill at least one of the mages, but not this time.  Drasus chased after him quickly enough after the second fireball to talk, but not quite quickly enough to get a proper sight of him and he didn't follow.  Genthore, however, did keep coming on his own - a bad mistake as his weapon speed is too slow to get an attack in on Thrain.  The ring of invisibility then allowed him to get behind Kysus and Rezdan.  The latter was nearly dead, but still survived a thrown dagger so Thrain took a potion of absorption and used the Greenstone Amulet before attacking in melee (using LMD to finish off Rezdan on the way in).  A couple of hits finished off Drasus while Kysus was invisible; he then showed himself in order to try and cast a spell - and failed.

Thrain - dwarf kensai (4th and final update)

Thrain took various potions prior to his encounter with Slythe and the thief failed to get his sword past the resulting -11 AC.

Moving straight on to the palace Thrain added DUHM before watching the dopplegangers appear and trying out a Bhaal horror.  That failed to affect anyone, but most of the dopplegangers attacked Thrain rather than the dukes.  As a result Belt was pretty much untouched by the time the last of the dopplegangers exploded.

The remaining buffs allowed him to plough through the enemies in the maze.  He then used a number of charges from his Necklace in taking down the Undercity party before having a rest.

He completed his roster of BG1 victims by taking down Sarevok before reporting to Belt for duty in Amn.

Fight of the day - Sarevok
I decided for a change I should fight the whole group this time and also that I shouldn't make use of missile weapons.  To that end, rather than drag Sarevok out alone, Thrain used a protection from magic scroll and then fireballed the dais to activate everyone.  He then ran Sarevok around for a while until Semaj cast a fireball at him.  He immediately took a potion of invisibility and watched as Sarevok returned some 'friendly fire' onto the mage - Tazok had obviously been close as well as he appeared and joined in the fun.  Thrain then used his Necklace to get Angelo to appear (successfully guessing his location at the first attempt).  He tried just beating him up, but looked like he might lose against his arrows of explosion so used another potion of invisibility and then his only potion of regeneration.  Once back to full health he used some more potion buffs and took just one more big whack to finish Angelo off.

Another Necklace blast got Sarevok to chase him before he was dumped using another potion of invisibility and Thrain went back for Tazok - using his superior weapon speed to get unopposed attacks on him.  Finally, Thrain used a potion of power and turned to Sarevok.  He had a slight weapon speed advantage on him as well, though not enough to guarantee no retaliation, and Thrain was hit twice while taking Sarevok to near death.  Surprisingly at that point a battle horror joined the fray, despite Thrain not getting close to the edge of the temple.  Rather than fight him as well Thrain led the enemies away and used another invisibility potion.  As he could potentially have been one-shotted by a critical at that point he also took the opportunity to use Bhaal healing and DUHM to restore some HPs before dragging Sarevok back out into the main bit of the temple with LMD.

He managed several more hits on Sarevok before getting the timing slightly wrong and taking one in return.  However, that didn't matter as Sarevok had had enough of the fight anyway.

Diary of Blade Tormson

I managed to kill both Tristan and Isolde though it took three bites at the cherry.

Phallen Nightsbane and party were a bit trickier. I used the necklace of missiles to good effect and with it I killed two of their party and seriously wounded the other two.

The third, a mage, died simultaneously with casting confusion.

There I was with the battle almost won but having no control over what happened next. I was also hurt, but at that point not seriously. Then the last of their party wounded me and even though confused I was able to defeat him.

The spoils in these two battles were not ideal as the weapons were not two handed swords. :(

Still, the experience was beneficial. :)

I then went along the south of the sword coast helping Prism, dogs, cats, dryads and the like. Eventually I was able to get a tome which would allow me to raise my charisma to 19.

I then helped Prism before bringing Xzar, Montaron, Khalid and jaheira to Nashkel.

Montaron went off on his own from time to time and came back with useful treasure. I think that it might be unwise to be too inquisitive as to where it came from.

At least he didn't kill any innocents!

In Beregost I helped the Dudley family and a completely spineless man.

When I was in Nashkel I let Khalid and Jaheira go there own way. I might meet them again some day. :)

Not so Xzar and Montaron they went off in a huff, and it seems that I will not be seeing them again, at least not in the near future.

I then went ankheg hunting.

I went down the mines and fought hordes of kobolds and a party of assassins. I nearly used up my necklace of missiles against them and had to return to the surface to get both it and myself recharged. I got some decent armour for myself as well as lots of weapons that others might find useful.

I felt that I might have bitten off more than I could chew, and will therefore leave the rest of the mines until I am a little stronger.

I am now a level 6 champion of Torm.

When I fought Zordral, I charmed Bentha who was a big help. She took the brunt of a lot of Zordral's spells. Eventually she left the tent taking Zordral with her. This gave me the chance to rest and heal myself before rejoining the fray. Sadly Bentha died before Zordral. :(

(I was hoping that she might survive long enough to fight Oompah and perhaps some kobolds as well.)

I then returned to the south-west, killed some more assassins and helped Jared against a bear. He gave me some nice warm boots as a reward.

Now level 7. :)

The big question now is solo or party?

I've had a lot of trouble with my BGT install recently, or to be more precise: with my installs (have had to reinstall numerous times up to the point that I considered to just stick to the EEs, in spite of that meaning that I'd have to miss out on a number of really good mods). My latest install seems relatively stable. Have had two crashes to desktop in my current game, but when I reloaded everything worked ok.

My WEIDU log:

Spoiler
More or less my usual setup, with mostly mods that alter gameplay and graphics, a couple of new kits and items; no NPCs and no new areas (I think). @Grond0, installing without Tobex solved my problem.

The new face is Nymand, LN Male Elven Bounty Hunter:

Spoiler
This is Nymand at level 4, as you can see with all skill points spent toward MS. (MS and HiS look higher than they were due to Boots of Stealth. MS was 110 , HiS 30; later skillpoints went toward Trap Setting and Detection, the last 30 points are reserved for DI). I had a level 1 screenshot as well but had to restart Nymand twice due to aforementioned issues with the game, and in the process I deleted the level 1 screenshot. So the run that I'm about to report is actually Nyamand's 3rd run. For the trouble of having to go through the early game again and again I allowed him this time to keep a second Potion of Clarity from one of the rooms upstairs in Winthrop's Inn and I rewarded him with a Ninja-To +1 at the start of the game. Starting profs were short bows and short swords, but I installed the BG2 Tweaks component "Alter Weapon Proficiency System", according to which Short Swords and Ninja-To are one weapon category (just as Wakizashis/Katanas and Maces/Morningstars), hence Nymand's Ninja-To +1.

Nymand is a relatively cautious adventurer (I have a Rogue Rebalancing Thief script running that has him try to HiS all the time), and in accordance with that he carefully adventured his way toward level 5 doing the usual quests in the areas on and directly surrounding the Coast Way, plus the South Coast (Nib and Brage). A combination of slackness and overconfidence got him into trouble near Alaric's Cave in the Lighthouse Area. It was the early afternoon, not a good moment for trying to sneak past three Sirines, and yet that was exactly what the thief did. He actually thought he had succeeded but then saw one of the Sirines behind him cast a fog cloud toward him. Wary once more, Nymand responded by quaffing an invisibility potion.
Spoiler
The Sirine must have sensed the rogue entering the cave, because she followed him inside. By that time Nymand had already drunk a potion of clarity but that would prove unnecssary, she would never know what hit her:
Spoiler
Stealth allowed him to take down the three Golems as well, good for reaching level 6. Another level was gained in Mutamin's Garden, where Korax and Arrows of Biting bought at the Thunderhammer Smithy made Mutamin an easy kill for a change.
Spoiler
Kirian was, somewhat cheesily I admit, slain with traps and subsequently relieved of the Golden Girdle, but her companions, who delayed in turning hostile, were left alone. (In part because the game crashed during the fight and I didn't feel like repeating.)
Spoiler
More quests included lucrative targets (in terms of both XP and material rewards) like Meilum and Greywolf. Important items by then included Girdle of Piercing, Master Belt, Greenstone Amulet, Shadow Armor, Deep Red Ioun Stone, Cloak of Displacement, Composite Short Bow +2, Algernon's Cloak and Ring of Free Action (which was acquired from Dushai in a single careless pickpocket attempt, with only 40 skillpoints in PP and no potion boost).

In the Nashkel Mines Nymand managed to slip past all the Kobolds unnoticed (which was surprising because they tend to block the path toward the final level, but this time they moved). In Mulahey's lair, things didn't go as planned, as Mulahey found Nymand just when the latter was trying to place his third trap. The priest immediately summoned his pets. Some of the summons died right away thanks to Nymand's traps, but many didn't. Nymand went invisible and drank potions of defense and magic shielding, and then became visible once again by throwing an oil of fiery burning at the summons, followed by another one.

Spoiler
Mulahey then fell in melee while fruitlessly attempting to Hold the thief. The three remaiming summons were no threat.
Spoiler
In the Valley of the Tombs, Nymand succesfully dispatched the undead guarding the tombs, but Narcillicus eluded him after I clicked a wrong answer option. Nimbul was left in the care of the Amnish guards until his morale failed, at which point Nymand did him in with a backstab.
Spoiler
Nymand did some more adventuring: Brun, Ankhegs (after he found they could only hit him on criticals with their ranged attacks), Tenya, Cloudpeaks, Gnoll Stronghold for CHA tome, Shoal and Ogres on the North Coast, Bassiulus with traps and a backstab. He had Thalantyr merge the Girdles of Bluntness/Piercing/Slashing (+3 AC, +1 STR, and 1 regen per 6 seconds), and then sought out the bandits. Nymand carfeully trapped the entrance to Tazok's tent, just to secure his escape route, and then entered the tent hidden in shadows, with potions of defense, fire resistance (2x), and explosives at the ready. Fire, in the form of two potions of explosions, proved to be an excellent remedy against the bandit plague.
Spoiler
The survivors of the explosions were finished off with arrows of biting. When he stepped outside, Nymand saw a Taugosz fall to his traps.
Spoiler
The rogue took the warrior's armor and other possessions, and left the camp unscathed.

In Cloakwood 1 he poisoned Aldeth Sashenstar with arrows of biting and he found a Cloak of Non-Detection on one of various Tasloi he killed. That cloak, together with a Cloak of Protection +1 and two scrolls of Invisibility was made into the Cloak of Non-Detection +1 (Non-Detection, +1 AC/Saves, 2x/day Invisibility), an item I think is so beautiful that I'll allow Nymand to "find" it in Irenicus' dungeon should he make it there. He's currently preparing for his second trip to the Cloakwood.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Good progress Grimwald; I liked your charming of Bentha. As to your question, I love solo because it really forces one to make the best out of a class/kit, but party play ca be entertaining and poses its own challenges. Good luck deciding :)

Diary of Blade Tormson

The next point of call was the basilisk area. It was successful apart from one thing. I had to use all three potions of mirrored eyes along with a potion of speed.

I realised afterwards that if I had used a potion of heroism, I could have had one potion of mirrored eyes left for the basilisks in Durlag.

I was fortunate that I wasn't ambushed by them as I left.

I normally use the scroll, but my intelligence doesn't allow it and so far I haven't found an intelligence raising potion. :(

Diary of Blade Tormson

Killed Bassilus and the Zargal party with no problems. A few minor skirmishes later and I was level 8. Time for the mines. The kobolds werwe tougher than expected, but everything else was as normal and caused no problems.

My belts were merged into one at High Hedge at a cost of 5000gp. I am following my vow of poverty again. :crying:

Outside Lamalha didn't turn up.

I killed the Revenant and headed for Nashkel.

There I killed Nimbul and accidentally forgot about Niera. That battle will now have to wait. :(

North of Nashkel the lady ogresses didn't turn up either.

Arrived in Beregost. :)

(I am wondering how to kill Tazok. Normally I keep my distance using oil of speed and ranged weapons. A solo Champion of Torm has no ranged weapons, so that is out. Is it possible to charm him and let the bad guys kill him? Of course first I need oil of speed)

@Grond0, thank you, I'm enjoying it so far :)
@Grimwald, could you use throwing daggers/axes?

Nymand reached level 10 by thoroughly cleansing the second Cloakwood area, protected by Dushai's ring of free action, and using stealth/backstabs and arrows of biting to take care of the spiders.

Spoiler
The same methods, complemented with traps, were succesful against Drasus and co.
Spoiler
Inside the Cloakwood Mine Nymand only left stealth mode to orchestrate the rescue of the miners, and of course to deal with Davaeorn. For that encounter a green scroll of Protection from Magic was relied on as usual, as well as a potion of defense (to be better protected against the Battle Horrors) before the wizard was brought down with acid arrows.
Spoiler
Nymand then traveled to Baldur's Gate where he gathered the stat increasing tomes, and did some shopping (potions, arrows, green scrolls, and a new composite shortbow +2 that gives a 10% chance of inflicting some electricty damage, RR item). For Scar he dealt with the Doppelgangers at the Seven Suns, the Ogre Mage in the sewers and the Iron Throne. The ring of free action and two potions that offered protection against his enemies' spells kept him safe, while an oil of speed combined with the boots of speed made backstabbing and archery (at 3 apr) effective means to deal with the Throne cronies, as the following screenshots illustrate.
Spoiler
Nymand then returned to Candlekeep where fights with both Rieltar & Co and Prat and his gang were avoided. (Two Greater Basilisks were the only creatures killed there.) A potion of Master Thievery was used to obtain the tomes and other treasure.

At Durlag's Tower a final tome was acquired using a charge from the Greenstone Amulet to protect against the undisarmable charm trap. Back in the city Nymand used one of four green scrolls of Protection from Magic to neutralize Krystin's magics in the Undercellars. As it was she who first showed herself at the entrance, after an opening backstab by Nymand in the center, the bounty hunter decided to engage - and eventually kill - the woman in ranged combat.

Spoiler
With Krystin out of the way, Nymand set three traps near the entrance, showed himself to Slythe, lured him toward the entrance, where Nymand's traps did their job.
Spoiler
Next stop was the Ducal Palace. I was quite apprehensive this was also going to be Nymand's last stop, but the encounter with the Greater Doppelgangers went swell. Nymand placed a few traps before the ceremony began, and in preparation for what was to come he buffed with another green scroll of Protection from Magic, an oil of speed, and a potion of power. To deal with his foes he then used arrows of dispelling (some of which poisoned with one of four vials of poison he had bought from Lily at the Thieves Guild) and backstabs using Slythe's Short Sword of Backstabbing and the ring of invisibility. Both Liia and Belt survived the battle.
Spoiler
This triumph made Nymand feel quite confident about the final showdown. So unlike some of my other charnames who would retreat immediately and take on Sarevok's lackeys one by one, Nymand, still buffed from the Ducal Palace, showed himself and invited Sarevok and his adherents to attack him.
Spoiler
Arrows of dispelling were used on Sarevok, Diarmid, and Angelo, the latter being the first to fall (thanks to Nymand's acid arrows, again poisoned with one his vials of poison).
Spoiler
Diarmid, a very good archer, was finished off with backstabs.
Spoiler
Then a slightly annyoing time followed: Semaj was not going to show himself until Nymand's PfMagic would expire, and Nymand's 30% Detect Illusions score failed to make Tazok, who had been following Nymand, become visible. So he deliberately allowed Tazok to hit him. Tazok thanked him for his kindness with a (low damage) critical, and Sarevok too took up the invitation.
Spoiler
Nymand then proceeded to slay the Half-Ogre with ranged attacks, and also around that time quaffed two potions of protection from magic for 100% MR. This was done because Nymand foresaw the expiration of his green scroll's protection against magic. Semaj's first move would now have to be to dispel Nymand's protections (rather than possibly surprising him with a Chaos cast from close range). Indeed Semaj cast Remove Magic on Nymand as soon as the protective globe expired, and Nymand responded in kind with an arrow of dispelling. He then retreated to go invisible and quaffed a potion of magic shielding. Numerous arrows of dispelling eventually rendered Semaj defenseless before acid arrows would do him in.
Spoiler
That left only Sarevok but Nymand's backstabs made him too, bite the dust.
Spoiler
Nymand reported his success to Belt and Liia and was then sent on a mission to Amn. He awoke however in Irencius' Dungeon...

Well done with Nymand, Blackraven.  Keep it up in BG2!

Quad multiplayer attempt 2 - (update 4)

Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

Not as clean a session as last time today, but the gang are still all there and have arrived in Baldur's Gate.

Having just completed the Bandit Camp last time they sold surplus equipment before heading for the Cloakwood.  Aldeth got a helping hand in the first area before they successfully recovered a body from Centeol in the second - Static having to use an antidote there after being poisoned by an ettercap.  However, keen to get XP they then searched out some phase spiders: Static led the way under stealth and tripped a web trap - fortunately that didn't hold him, but his companions behind were not so lucky and Carthus and Corthief snuffed it.

After recovering as much equipment as possible the FAI temple put the group back together.  In a case of shutting the stable door after watching the rear end of a horse disappearing off into the distance they returned to Ulgoth's Beard to get Dushai's ring of free action.  Corthief set some traps and thought about trying a pickpocket, but Static pre-empted that attempt by splatting Dushai with a critical backstab.

Back in the Cloakwood they dared to take on the wyvern cave.  Corthief felt confident enough, although Carthus felt his AC of -6 was a bit marginal.  His fears proved prophetic when Corthief was taken down low on HPs and then died of poison just seconds before the last of the wyverns keeled over.

At the mine Corthief buffed up with potions and the Greenstone Amulet and presented himself as a target for Drasus.  Meanwhile the others focused on the mages and managed to finish them off before they could do much - making victory relatively easy.  They bypassed the mage encounters in the mine and went straight down to Daveorn.  He targeted Corthief with a fireball, but couldn't manage much else useful and quickly fell under assault.  Static flooded the mine, only to find that he and Carthus were trapped down there and needed to phone a friend to get the console command to reunite them with the others.

Stats:

Grond0 - Static, fighter 5 / thief 5, 47 HPs, 233 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, monk 7, 44 HPs, 51 kills, 0 deaths

corey_russell - Corthief, fighter 5 / thief 6, 52 HPs, 111 kills, 4 deaths
Gate70 - Carthus, monk 6, 36 HPs, 99 kills, 2 deaths

@Grimwald, could you use throwing daggers/axes?

No throwing axes but do have a throwing knife.

Thanks for the idea.

Since I had gauntlets from Meilum, it wasn't a big issue since Blade died anyway. :(

What was a big issue was how difficult the improved end battle for chapter two is.

I wasn't expecting it to be quite so tough!

The bandits all seemed to be equivalent of Black Talons and those from inside the tent joined in the fray! Poisoned arrows were what really caused my demise.

I think that I MIGHT have stood a chance if I had been better buffed.

However, it would still have been tough.

Now I know what to expect, I might stand a chance next time.

At least now I know that I am not overpowered with Dark Horizons installed. :)

@ USS Norway

He had a +2 returning throwing dagger for use against Tazok, so that might have been sufficient.

@Grond0

Against the hordes he did use necklace of missiles again and again, however he should have been protected with potions of invulnerability and heroism, and also been near an exit point in case of emergency.

Hindsight is a great thing.

Now trying a Gnomish Cavalier (Immune to poison :) ) (Though not as adept with weapons as champion of Torm)

Garbo Thunderaxe.

With **axes, ** sword and shield style.

Str 18/95, Dex 18, Con 18, Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 17

Amazed at how quickly I got that throw!

Escaped Candlekeep OK.

@Grimwald, did the bandits go hostile when you fought Tazok, or did that happen later? In my setup I can fight and kill Tazok with ranged attacks after I give the right replies ("We're strong, well-armed, etc...." and "Surely you need all help you can get after the fiasco at the Nashkel Mines."). However sometimes the game applies an instant death effect on one character, which is why I stopped fighting him in solo runs.
As to the other bandits, I'm not sure what Dark Horizons does with them, but in SCS you should be able to survive their rain of missiles using all the items that improve AC, especially against missiles (Ring/Amulet of Protection +1, Claw of Kazgaroth, Boots of Avoidance, Cloak of Displacement, and potions of defense or a good suit of armor such as Ankheg or ideally Full Plate). A Paladin's PfE is useful as well. Of course it's also wise to buff in order to kill your opponents faster, using potions such as those of Heroism, Speed, maybe Power, and x Giant Strength.

Better luck with your Cavalier!

I don't normally talk to him and can't really remember the conversation options.  However, it's possible the instant deaths you refer to could be a result of your conversation choices.  If you refer to the fiasco at the Nashkel mines that might be taken to indicate you had something to do with it - possibly a stat check could then lead to death.  You might want to experiment with safer alternatives ...

They went hostile later.

Like the Cavalier, the Champion of Torm cannot use ranged weapons, the reason why USS Norway suggested throwing axes or daggers against him to avoid him leaving before dying. My armour was actually slightly better than full plate as an assassin was wearing Duragon's Plate. I was probably wearing the wrong boots. I wasn't wearing amulet of protection as I was using necklace of missiles. A better strategy would be to have used potions such as potion of explosion first so that I could wear that amulet, then when their numbers were smaller, switch to the necklace of missiles.

I know, it was me who suggested axes/daggers :) Either way, another option is always to simply leave the Camp after your business there has been concluded. Of course, if you're roleplaying a Pally, you might want to eradicate the evil that is a bandit encampment, but even a Paladin of average intelligence should be able to decide that he can't be expected to wipe out 50-80 SCS) bandits. Also, the gains are limited in terms of XP or items. (I don't think you'll need the scalps except maybe if you've also installed Hard Times.)
