There's a global variable called SCARMISSION that I suspect controls the availability of this quest.  You could try experimenting with setting that to different values.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 70{2} - (2nd and final update)

St John, human berserker (Grond0) & Vargus, human kensai (Gate70)

This pair continued on their quest to tame the Sword Coast, starting with the retrieval of the tome at Durlag's Tower before heading to Baldur's Gate.

In the City they did the usual routine of picking up the tomes and added the Helm & Cloak of Balduran.  In addition they sorted out the Seven Suns - we don't normally bother with that quest, but St John wanted the magic spear from their cellars.  Vargus tried handing Tremain back his son, but a glitch meant there was no reward given - not that that was much of a loss as neither character is using a shield.

After sneaking into the Iron Throne they were sent by Duke Eltan back to Candlekeep.  St John quickly looted the tombs there, including incinerating all 4 phase spiders with a single firebreath.  After fighting through dopplegangers St John continued on to confront Prat's party while his scroll of magic protection was still active.  Vargus wanted to join in the fun, but had run out of throwing axes and was affected by a horror - fortunately despite running around for a long while he never ran into any enemies (St John was having fun trying to block him when he looked like he would ).

Back in Baldur's Gate Slythe was hopelessly outmatched by the 2 fighters.  At the palace they buffed up before engaging.  The fight there looked dodgy when all the dopplegangers attacked the dukes and both seemed to take severe punishment - St John reacting by twice using his Bhaal CLW on Duke Belt.  However, ultimately the dopplegangers were cut down and both dukes survived.

The enemies in the maze were no trouble, although St John's attempt to play safe by using magic protection to set off the traps near the skeleton warriors nearly backfired - Vargus who was waiting in the adjacent corridor was hit twice by lightning bolts and swiftly took a potion before he could be finished off.  While his scroll was still active St John assaulted the Undercity party: he took plenty of damage - largely from Rahvin's exploding arrows - but was ultimately successful.

In the temple Sarevok was pulled out alone with a dispelling arrow and St John then used a potion of invisibility to disappear and buff up.  Sarevok managed to hit him a couple of times before dying this time, but was still well beaten.

Stats:

St John, berserker 8, 86 HPs, 215 kills

Vargus, kensai 8, 81 HPs, 158 kills, 0 deaths

Quad multiplayer attempt 2 - (6th and final update)

Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

The Quad were also on patrol tonight looking to complete their work in BG1.

They started by venturing into the sewers to attack an ogre mage.  That could have had a nasty ending when it confused Static, but fortunately it killed itself with a bouncing lightning bolt that passed directly between Corthief and Static, while Static only did a single hit on Wewa (which she survived).

Wewa was less fortunate on arrival at Candlekeep when she got too close to the Iron Throne party before a welcome reception had been laid out for them.  She died in the ensuing combat and the others started to go to the temple to get her raised, but were intercepted by a Watcher - that meant Wewa's equipment, which was still lying on the ground, was lost.

In the catacombs Corthief robbed the tombs and tanked the phase spiders with the help of a protection from poison scroll.  A few dopplegangers later and he swapped that green scroll for magic protection to tackle Prat's gang, while Static and Carthus darted in to attack from the sides to ensure a comfortable victory.  Corthief then added another green scroll to beat up the basilisks.

The FAI provided a stopping point to raise Wewa before returning to the City.  After shopping and resting the Quad went to confront Slythe - he managed to survive some pre-laid traps, but not a backstab.  Moving quickly on to the palace some potion buffs were used before Corthief showed himself to start a slugfest - which the dopplegangers failed to survive.

The buffs were used to work through the first bit of the maze, with Corthief adding protection from undead for the skeleton warriors.  Wewa also had one of those scrolls, but didn't read it before getting into visual range of the skellys and only just survived running away again.

The Undercity party came off worst in an exchange of exploding arrows with Corthief and Static before the party rested for the final fight.  Sarevok was pulled out alone with a dispelling arrow and never stood much chance.  He did manage to make Corthief retreat, but with backstabs from Static and stealth attacks from the monks he didn't know which way to turn and eventually ran away.

Stats:

Grond0 - Static, fighter 6 / thief 7, 67 HPs, 319 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, monk 8, 51 HPs, 65 kills, 2 deaths

corey_russell - Corthief, fighter 6 / thief 7, 66 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 173 kills, 4 deaths
Gate70 - Carthus, monk 8, 47 HPs, 129 kills, 3 deaths

I decided not to bother with the quest and a lot of others too otherwise I would have been too strong in Amn. A mod raised the experience cap higher than I would have.

The rest of the run went without undue problems and Swiftsword is therefore about to go to Amn. jpegs later.

In Amn will no doubt discover if it is the items or the character that is overpowered.

Nice to get her through without any problems.

In Amn she will not be solo as I want to discover more about various NPCs and their relationships.

Well done Wise - best of luck in Amn.

Nain - dwarf kensai (update 1)

I've actually just finished creating an updated modded install and will probably try a party using that soon.  However, as I'd previously checked on the name of Dain's father I thought I would give him a go first.  Dain somewhat accidentally fell into attempting to complete BG2 without the use of any potions, but had used them in BG1.  I've now decided it would be realistic to complete the whole game without them, so Nain will avoid them from the start.  As always for my characters Nain also won't be using any other item-based healing, but will be otherwise unrestricted.

The lack of potions means that the strength tome is not available to Nain.  To minimise the impact of that I rolled characters until I got one with 18(00) strength.  Here he is about to leave Candlekeep.

@Grond0: Hmm, no potions, no armor, and no magic - good luck with that! And hopefully, you don't get no luck too...

Thanks Corey.  Like you've told me in the past I'll need to rely on good intelligence as good luck runs out!

Nain - dwarf kensai (update 2)

I had a bit of time left before work this morning to make a start with Nain.  He disposed of Shoal with just 3 throwing axes before doing a bit of work in Beregost (failing to kill Karlat when he ran away scared and disappeared) and Nashkel.

He then worked his way towards the basilisk area to clear that, before travelling north to Ulgoth's Beard.  The Greenstone Amulet from there allowed him to kill the sirines in the lighthouse and get up to level 7.  Up to that point he'd never been more than scratched, but he did then take plenty of damage in taking on the flesh golems - here the last one loses out in a slug-fest.  He'll be heading to the Nashkel Mine next.

Nain has 65 HPs at the moment, which like all my kensais is pretty awful (average would be 78).  However, I've got plenty of experience now in avoiding damage to kensais, so the HPs shouldn't make too much difference!

Nain - dwarf kensai (3rd and final update)

Nain had done all the hard work in BG1, but eventually fell to a combination of over-confidence and bad luck with criticals.

A combination of weapons, Greenstone Amulet and Necklace of Fireballs sorted out the Nashkel Mine, amazons, Nimbul, Tranzig and Neira with no problems.  A charge of the newly purchased Shield Amulet was added for the Bandit Camp.

At the ankheg nest shield was joined by a green protection from acid scroll, although that was a bit wasted as the ankhegs only managed a single hit anyway.

A combination of shield and Greenstone amulet was then too much for Bassilus and his friends.  That pushed Nain's gold up to almost 50k and he invested 35k of that in the ring of invisibility as well as relieving Dushai of his ring of free action.

After strolling through the Cloakwood fireballs, Greenstone Amulet and shield for the mages and axes for the fighters got Nain into the mine.  He took a fair amount of damage going down and killing the first battle horror and rested using his invisibility ring for the first time to heal up before doing the other one.  After killing that (getting to level 8 in the process) he rested again, then used a protection from magic scroll to go through the remaining trap and take out Daveorn.

With 2 horror abilities in the bag Nain did the rounds of reputation quests to maximise that before buying the Horn and Claw of Kazgaroth.  A final bit of journeying then obtained the tome from Durlag's Tower before heading for Baldur's Gate.

In the city he picked up 3 more tomes without difficulty.  To save on shield charges (he's not recharging equipment) he used the nearby temple to heal damage while progressing up Ramazith's tower and also poofed the Greenstone Amulet there to protect against ghast paralysation.

As the palace fight promised to be a bit dangerous Nain went to get the Cloak of Balduran to boost his defense.  Then he sneaked into the Iron Throne before being sent back to Candlekeep.

In Candlekeep he couldn't open the tombs with the tomes, but threw axes to clear the dopplegangers out of the way before using a scroll of magic protection and ring of free action to protect against Prat's party - an opening horror there confirming his view he didn't need to use a shield charge.  The protection from petrification scroll from the Iron Throne then let him get a bit more XP on the way out.

Back in Baldur's Gate Slythe panicked at the sight of the burly dwarf and didn't survive his run round.  At the palace I was a little concerned about the lack of potions on both Nain's attack and defense.  However, by using shield and DUHM he got his AC to -7, with an additional 3 adjustment from his belt, which made him pretty safe and fortunately several of the dopplegangers tried to attack him rather than the dukes.  His 2 horrors only scared 1 of the opponents and Liia died, but Belt survived with something to spare and, after Nain tracked down one doppleganger that had run upstairs, he was willing to acknowledge Sarevok's misdeeds.

Nain fought his way through the maze, resting several times to heal damage.  He then chose to attack the Undercity party using just a scroll of magic protection - thinking he could retreat if necessary.  However, while running Rahvin round to get a good place to attack him he ran into a group of half a dozen skeleton archers.  They were horribly lucky, getting 3 critical hits on him, doing something over 40 damage.  Nain had already been injured a bit by Rahvin, so that took his 71 HPs worryingly low, but I didn't think it was safe to use the ring of invisibility as there's a bit of a delay on activation of that that would have allowed further attacks.  Nain continued running and successfully got out of range of the skeletons and I was intending to go and rest, but needed to bypass the rest of Rahvin's party and Nain collapsed there.  There's only 1 archer in that party apart from Rahvin and Nain hadn't seemed critically low on HPs, so I suspect that was probably yet another critical :(.

And again: Sorry to see your Kensai fall, Grond0... especially sad at the end of BG1.
I would urge you to roll yet another Kensai, as having your last Kensai fall in BG1 after Dain's spectecular run all the way to final TOB fight would be a bit anti-climactic... But it's all up to you of course. :)

As to my progress, the evil custom party is still running. But, as always, I got a bit impatient with playing a full party, so I rolled up a new solo Bounty Hunter. Will probably post about her exploits tomorrow. She's hunting bandits atm, but I'm inclined to wait with posting and see if she can take the hurdle of the Ducal Palace. (Have had too many solo runs end at the coronation party...)

@Grond0 - Tough break - your situation was a great place to use an invis potion, if you were allowed to. But criticals are always the bane of Kensais in unmodded BG 1 in any case. What about necklace of missile charges, they aren't potions.

I agree and Nain did have a few of the original 10 charges left at that point.  However, he would only have had free scope to use it twice from out of sight (first blast would turn neutrals hostile and second send them in search of the enemy) and that would have been unlikely to kill anyone.  The intention had been to drag people away one at a time - the skeleton archers appearing were the problem there.

I would urge you to roll yet another Kensai

Nain{2} - dwarf kensai (update 1)

I couldn't be bothered to roll up a new character, but felt Nain had been rather unlucky in his death so restarted him.

He's followed a pretty standard course so far, though will aim just to hit the normal XP cap in BG1 rather than exceed it - his predecessor was approaching 300k when he died.

Shoal gave him the typical flying start to level 3.  A few bits of work in Beregost, ending with Karlat's death, were then enough for level 4.

In Nashkel he bought Necklace of Missiles, Shield Amulet and a protection from petrification scroll.  That meant he needed to go and kill Greywolf in order to swap his sword for a magic axe.

A few basilisks later and he had moved up to level 5 before another basilisk surprised him by instantly attacking in melee and inflicting his first damage of the run.  Soon after that he became fatigued, but carried on and finished off the basilisks, getting Korax to paralyse Mutamin for him, in order to get to level 6 with the death of his pet basilisk.  Korax then did exceptionally well to paralyse all of Kirian and her party without being hit at all.  In gratitude Nain presented him with a throwing axe of his own.  Nain then rested for the first time, learning a Bhaal CLW.

In the Cloudpeaks Sendai and Zal donated some expensive items to boost Nain's finances and he headed for Ulgoth's Beard to buy the Cloak of Displacement and Greenstone Amulet.  On the way there he stopped off at the FAI to return Landrin's things (I didn't bother with the pantaloons as he wouldn't use the Big Metal Rod anyway).

Using his new amulet for protection Nain cut down Bassilus and then the sirines in the lighthouse area - taking him to level 7 (at 72 HPs compared to average of 78 he's about as good as any of my kensais have been).  With his attacks now at 2 APR rather than 1.5 his melee performance is much more predictable.  That allowed him to take down the golems without problems, resting to heal between each encounter - using kai he will kill a golem in 2 hits (or 1 with a critical), so unless the golem critically hits with its first attack or Nain critically misses there's no need to try any fancy nipping in and out between attempted golem attacks.

He'll be heading to the Nashkel Mine next.

Nain{2} - dwarf kensai (update 2)

With constitution now raised to 20 Nain regenerates over time and used that to heal damage quickly by resting in the Nashkel mine.  A Greenstone amulet charge and a fireball then dealt with Mulahey and his supporters.  A couple more fireballs left only a spot of tidying up on the amazons before Nain rested to get his second Bhaal CLW.

He returned to Nashkel where 2 axes thrown at Nimbul from beyond talking range proved enough.  The same recipe sufficed for Tranzig as well.

Before going to the Bandit Camp Nain returned to the ankheg area to rob the nest; using the Shield Amulet for the first time meant he took no damage there.  The loot from that gave him enough funds to buy the ring of invisibility and, as he won't be returning to Ulgoth's Beard, he also killed Dushai for his ring of free action.

A single thrown axe (using kai) killed Bentan at Firewine Bridge.  That provided a scroll of protection from magic, although the main purpose was to reduce reputation down to 8 in order to get Bhaal horror abilities from further progress.  While in the area Nain also dealt with Meilum in order to sell his bracers before heading for the Bandit Camp - picking up a valuable ring at the FAI on the way.

Another use of shield and thrown axes allowed him to clear the external bandits with minimal damage.  After resting he used the Greenstone Amulet and entered the main tent.  He failed to hit Venkt before he mirrored and then jumped in and out of the tent a couple of times to split the opposition up for easy disposal - finishing in style with Venkt.  Mulahey's boots then ensured the trap on the chest only tickled a bit.

After resting to get his first horror, Nain went to sell equipment.  Despite his lowered reputation he already had just enough money for the Claw and Horn of Kazgaroth and decided to buy those now - there's virtually nothing else for him to buy as he's not using potions.

He ran through the Cloakwood, avoiding any combats, to get to the mine.  Rather than use amulet resources there he just dragged Drasus away and used his superior weapon speed to beat him up in a running fight.  In the mine he went invisibly down to Davaeorn's level, just talking to Rill on the way.  After killing the guard there he activated both battle horrors, dragged them upstairs and then went invisible (stranding them there).  A scroll of magic protection then allowed him to sort out Davaeorn.  After resting to get his second horror he flooded the mine, got his reputation boost and left invisibly.

He did some quick quests to maximise reputation and picked up the tome from Durlags Tower (using a Greenstone Amulet charge there) before heading for Baldur's Gate.

Nain{2} - dwarf kensai (3rd and final update)

In the City Nain collected the tomes.  He cut down Jalantha and Ramazith before they could cast anything and a Greenstone Amulet charge protected against Marek's confusion.  He got to level 8 against Jalantha and 14 more HPs gave him a total of 86 - just 2.5 below average (yippee).  The first Nain made use of the Claw in BG1, but this version is sacrificing the AC benefit for the higher HPs without it.

Nain chose to do the Mountain Maulers this time, in order to get a +2 axe.  That was easy enough using a protection from magic scroll and shield, while his horror abilities helped split the opposition up.  He also collected the Cloak of Balduran before sneaking into the Iron Throne.

Back at Candlekeep Nain couldn't open the tombs without potions, but did use a magic protection scroll and ring of free action to take the magic throwing axe off Prat.

Back in Baldur's Gate he went to find Slythe.  Slythe saved against both attempted horrors and then did surprisingly well in melee - resulting in Nain running away to the temple to heal before coming back to finish him off.

At the palace Nain used a shield charge and DUHM before engaging the dopplegangers.  He was then lucky with his initial horror sending 3 of the dopplegangers running.  That made the contest easy, with both dukes surviving.

Nain used invisibility to go through the maze and on to the Temple - leaving the Undercity party this time!  In the temple he activated the 2 lightning traps on the left and then rested to get back to full health before pulling Sarevok out alone.  Normally at that stage the battle is simple, but Nain had no speed advantage over Sarevok so needed a lot of micro-management to be able to get enough distance to throw his axe while running round the pillars (and then normally missed anyway).  Physically that was a bit of a challenge as the game was constantly being paused and as the combat reached about 40 minutes Nain was hit for the second time with Sarevok at badly wounded.  That put him in danger of being killed by a critical, so next time he got a little bit of distance he used the ring of invisibility.  His 2 CLW + DUHM healed him up a bit and he took the opportunity to get a kai hit in melee when he reappeared (doing as much damage as 4 of his previous throwing axe hits).  Nain wasn't hit again in the next 10 minutes or so until Sarevok finally crumbled under the pressure.

Nain sneaked back through the maze to find Duke Belt and has just arrived in Jon's dungeon.

@Grond0: Nice bit of patience there, a Sarevok battle taking almost an hour!!! Even more impressive since you had no way to dispel his haste. Hope Dain does well in SoA/ToB.

Norgath, Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 1st update

My other, more roleplayed run with a custom party led by Galatea is still in progress (and will be updated sometime soon I hope), but I felt the need to try my hand again at a more ambitious solo adventure. Its protagonist: Norgath. By 'ambitious' I mean that this run will include more metagamimg than Galatea's. However, whether I want it or not, I always incorporate some roleplaying in my gaming, so it would be foolish to expect myself to behave differently this time. I have particular difficulty doing evil things with good characters, much more so than doing good things with evil characters. Therefore Norgath's Lawful Evil alignment is convenient. It allows him to do evil things (such as the Assassinations mod quests in BG2. At the same time his lawfulness and his calculating mind (note the excellent mental stats) ensure that his good actions make some sense to me as well. The physical stats are optimized for survivability purposes, with 19 CON, 20 with the Tome, minimizing the penalty to saves vs death when the Claw of Kazgaroth is equipped. CHA is a bit of a dumpstat, though I could have gone all the way to 2, and optimize INT and WIS. With 7 CHA (after the Tome), Norgath will just be an almost stereotypical blunt, surly Dwarf.

The most important mods I'm playing with are Ascension, QuestPack with its revised Hell Trials,  Song & Silence, Rogue Rebalancing, SCS I and II (v21), Wheels of Prophecy, and aTweaks. Besides those, Thalantyr's Item Upgrade in BG1 and Weimer's Item Upgrade in BG2 allow Norgath to get some items upgraded by Thalantyr and Cromwell respectively. Assassinations, Back to Brynnlaw, and Sellswords offer a couple of new adventures in SoA. Finally, I'm using a number of tweaks from BG2Tweaks and BGTTweaks that facilitate different aspects of gameplay. Most consequential are the Un-Nerfed Thac0 table, maximum HP at level up (but also max HP for all enemies), and importation of gear from BG1 into Irenicus' Dungeon.

"Always try to be helpful to others. If you can't be bothered with it for their good, then do it for yourself. People will treat you much better if they like you." This had been one of Gorion's teachings back home in Candlekeep. When he was on his own, after Gorion's death, Norgath learnt that there was much truth in his foster father's words. People hadn't been very nice to him. So what's a plain-looking, penniless Dwarf to do, an inexperienced Bounty Hunter all alone in the cold, dark world?
Norgath decided to help people, not for them, but for himself: to make some gold, and to get treated a bit better, especially in stores. Amongst other feats he enabled Thalantyr the Conjurer to restore his fowl apprentice Melicamp to human form, helped a family find a lost necklace in Beregost, calmed an aggressive drunk in Feldepost's Inn, brought Firebead a book he needed, helped a slime retransform into a man, slew spiders for Landrin in the FAI, brought Joia her lost ring, returned Brun's dead son to the farmer and gave him 100 GP, retrieved a bowl from three fishermen for a young priestess of Umberlee, slew four Half-Ogres for a wounded Paladin, refused to take from Oublek a reward he wasn't due, helped Charleston Nib the archaeologist, and pacified frenzied Brage; he even did some babysitting for a woman in Nashkel.
These (and other) simple but good deeds made him a lot more popular. And a ring handed to him by Lord Foreshadow, made life even more pleasant for Norgath. Shopping time had come. A potion of master thievery bought at the Nashkel Carnival gave Norgath the confidence to try and pickpocket an expensive looking cloak from Algernon in Beregost. He succeeded at his first attempt, discovered the cloak enhanced his CHA, donned it and bought a suit of Shadow Armor, the Deep Red Ioun Stone (+1 DEX), the Sound Defense (short sword +2, +1 AC, +1 Saves v Death), the Claw of Kazagaroth, the Masterbelt (+10% Locks and Traps) and a composite shortbow +2. The sale of a Ring of Wizardry, a suit of Ankheg Plate mail, a couple of wands and miscellaneous loot made those purchases possible. (Norgath was level 5-6 at that point).
During one of his coastal excursions, he found a cave guarded by Sirines. Thankfully they hadn't seen him, so they didn't try to charm him. The Dwarf snuck past them and entered the cave, where he disarmed a number of traps, and where he boldly took on a number of Flesh Golems that would hit him hard. However his stealth (in which the first 65 skillpoints were invested, further enhanced by Shadow Armor and Boots of Stealth) allowed the Dwarf to dispatch three of them (even a few more that showed up when he attempted to rest), and make off with some nice loot. (Level 7 was soon reached.)
With his increased experience and his improved gear Norgath fancied his chances against more powerful and more intelligent opposition, and now that his reputation was set he was also willing to do a couple of not so nice things. Near the Firewine Bridge he met a young fighter named Meilum wearing what seemed to be enchanted (or at least expensive) gauntlets. Norgath set a few traps near him and then bullied the overconfident youngster into a duel. The traps did Meilum in. Basilisks and a Gnome controlling them were all slain thanks to Protection from Petrification, backstabs and a helpful Ghoul. Having run into small groups of Sirines on the coast, he was surprised to find a similar creature all by herself, a Nereid. He was curious to see how well his traps worked against such a magical being, and was pleased to see that his snares did their job well enough.
Near the Nashkel Mines, traps and ranged attacks also helped Norgath prevail in a battle of Bounty Hunters for the price on Prism's head. Another bounty wasn't claimed as easily. Bassilus the priest seemed to be unkillable. Norgath would injure his foe with ranged attacks from afar, retreat to his traps and attack again. But each time he showed himself to the priest, the latter would be uninjured (without quaffing any potions or using healing magic), and he'd do his SCS "pre-buffing at the start of combat" ritual and cast Hold Person at the Dwarf. He also wouldn't follow Norgath when the Dwarf disappeared from his sight, so getting Held wasn't really a risk (not that it would have been otherwise, with seven traps awaiting the Cleric). Clearly a bug. Rather than reloading I tried to get Norgath to kill Bassilus anyway. The once/day Charm Person ability of Lord Foreshadow's Ring of Human Influence helped with that. Norgath convinced his new friend to use his Flamestrikes to get rid of a number of Hobgoblins before he showed the Cleric his traps.
In the Cloudpeaks, where all resistance was tumbled, Norgath discovered that he could set a trap in stealth mode within visual range of non-hostile creatures that would immediately speak to him if they saw him, and hide right after setting the trap, which allowed him to set another trap. At the Gnoll Stronghold Norgath found a CHA tome, and other loot he traded at the High Hedge for a Wand of Sleep. With it, he went exterminating Aknhegs north of the FAI. When he was done Norgath was a level 9 Bounty Hunter, which meant having a x4 backstab multiplier, 65 Find Traps, 75 Set Traps, and already good stealth. The Dwarf bought the Sandthief ring, Greenstone Amulet, and Necklace of Missiles and traveled to the Nashkel Mines on a commission from Berrun Ghastkill. (I think I've never advanced a charname that thoroughly before taking him to the Nashkel Mines.)

Another thief aproaches; meet Kira, the not-so-ordinary halfling swashbuckler:

1_zpsiv8yx5bb.jpg

His kit is revised (not in current Kit Revisions):

2_zpss5nlpm8p.jpg

Weidu:

Spoiler

Basically, my standard Ascension/IR/KR/SR/Refinements/SCS/some aTweaks Demons (since I love demon gating!) install.

Some other tweaks I implemented:

this

this

I also tweaked Haste/Slow spells to behave a bit more senisibly (Haste no longer "cuts" a round to 3 seconds, more about it here)

Game plan:

- party of 4 throughout BG1

- take Korgan for BG2 :)

- take Sarevok for ToB :D

As so far, he killed Shoal, gaining 2 levels (as a sidenote, everybody - thieves, fighters, clerics, mages etc. share the same XP table as Paladins - this means Kira will have a much slower progression than a regular thief - it will take him 300 000 EXP to get level 9 for example.)

Wish him luck - he will definitely need it.

Good luck Aasim! The portrait drew a smile on my face :)
That slow XP progression though, ouch... The dual runs in SoA/ToB sound very cool.

Best of luck, Aasim! Personally I'm a bit reluctant on installing v.30 of SCS at the moment so looking forward to see how it will fare for you.

Have you used it somewhere, or it resembles someone you know? :)

Indeed.  I've created a new modded installation, including v.30, but haven't done more than test it opens in Candlekeep yet.  Once my kensai has bitten the dust ascended to the heavens I'll give that a go.

Kira, 2nd BG1 update

First things first - clearing out Beregost spiders and the rest of small quest here. Helping the evil bardess gave Kira level 4 and his first Insightful strike ability.

...which he tested on Dushai (avoided Ankhegs by traveling near water). Works fine, even if linked to apr a lot.

Anyhow, Dushai was slain, her ring now safely on halfling's finger.

With that little ring, Kira can now get Viconia safely into his group (SCS makes the guy chasing her usually cast Hold, which is bad).

Together, they travel south where Viconia deals with many humanoids quickly. First, Greywolf

...Amn mercenaries

and random robbers. Kira usually uses Poison-tipped arrows, which deal a hefty amount of damage on a failed save.

We travel until Gnoll Fortress is on map, then return to Nashkel to get Edwin. With his help, we slay Bassilus (nice gold), even if Viconia was a crucial figure with her Silence being succesfull. We also killed hobgoblins for short sword +2 on the same map.

Next should be Gnoll Fortress and  Nashkel mines, where Xan will be (hopefully!) adopted as final party member for BG1.

I think it reminds me a bit of A Clockwork Orange's Alex.... very evil!

Norgath, Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 2nd update

Making generous use of his Necklace of Missiles, Norgath literally blasted his way through the Nashkel Mines until he reached Mulahey's den. He entered it quietly, placing two regular traps near the entrance and throwing two special ones into the Half-Orc's chamber. Hidden in shadows he then walked toward Mulahey and Mulahey, somehow sensing the Dwarf's presence, toward him. They met right in front of Norgath's special traps. The snares instantly killed the Half-Orc when he went hostile. The priest's death cry was heard by suddenly appearing Kobolds and Skeletons, but the traps by the entrance and two fireballs made them suffer the same fate as their master. In the valley of the tombs, Norgath swigged a potion of freedom to rid the area of a Revenant, three Ghasts and a Ghoul without having to fear getting held. He also received an enchanted dagger, and finished off Narcillicus with a backstab. He wandered a bit further south, where he obtained a PfMagic scroll from Hafiz, and then returned to Nashkel to report to Berrun Ghastkill.
Back in Nashkel the Dwarf asked the guards to arrest an Assassin that had threatened to kill him, but the guards werent't very vigorous and the Assassin, Nimbul, went after Norgath anyway. In order for the guards to disengage, Nimbul would quaff potions of invisibility (that Norgath had hoped to acquire for himself). The only way for Norgath to get Nimbul to show himself was to leave stealth and go look for his foe. Nimbul would then cast spells at the Dwarf - Confusion, Horror, sequencered Magic Missiles, Glitterdust - while Norgath would attempt to avoid getting hit by the spells by entering the Nashkel Store. The Bounty Hunter successfully evaded the first three spells but had to make a save vs the latter spell. When Nimbul's Mirror Images and Stoneskins were gone, courtesy of the guards, Norgath ended the fight by plunging his short blade in his opponent's back.
Norgath didn't linger in Nashkel; instead, he traveled straight to Beregost on business (Thunderhammer Smithy, High Hedge). However, he completely forgot about seeking out Officer Vai and Tranzig, which meant no scalp deal and no direct access to the Bandit Camp. Access was nevertheless obtained as the Dwarf infiltrated via Raiken. At the camp Norgath smart talked his way out of a fight with Tazok, explored and plundered the premises and, drinking potions of defense, fire resistance (2x) and speed, prepared to enter Tazok's tent. Inside it he spotted various panjandrums of the bandit organization, one of them a Mage that was immediately taken out of the equation with a fantastic backstab. (One of the nice things of being evil is attacking still neutral creatures without remorse.) An elven prisoner was told to leave the tent for his own good and thanked the Dwarf with information about the organization behind the bandits, the Iron Throne. The bandits were bombarded with fireballs until most of them were dead. Norgath bested the few remaining opponents in melee combat* and, in the case of Raemon, with backstabs.
* Norgath was dualwielding his trusty Sound Defense and Zargal's Short Sword +2 at that point. The Rogue Rebalancing mod allows Thieves and Bards to place up to three pips in two weapon fighting, conform PnP. Norgath's starting proficiencies were Short Swords (which in my setup include Ninja-To) and Shortbows, and his level 4 and 8 proficiency points went to two weapon fighting. In my install, this is the mod's only change to the Bounty Hunter kit (or any of the Thief kits). I use the mod mainly for the changes it makes to the Bard kits, and the extra items and encounters it provides.
Norgath fled the camp after he was done in Tazok's tent, rested at the FAI, bought scrolls of PfMagic and PfPoison as well as a number of protective potions from Thalantyr, and decided to follow the Elven prisoner's lead toward the hidden Iron Throne base in Cloakwood. In the first area he slew Tasloi that had Gurke's Cloak of Non-Detection, and Aldeth Sashenstar for a group of Druids he didn't felt like messing with. The second area saw no less than four Phase Spiders greeting Norgath upon his arrival. Careful manoeuvering enabled him to cast Protection from Poison on himself and to quaff a potion of freedom, before he dealt with the arachnids using arrows of biting and acid arrows. The remainder of the area was cleared with similar tactics, and with relative ease. Alas, the same could not be said of Centeol's residence. He somehow got stuck on his way out and saw himself almost immediately surrounded by attacking Ettercaps, Giant Spiders and Sword Spiders that left him no chance of escape. A potion of invisibility gave the Dwarf the time to heal and to imbibe two potions of fire resistance, after which he roasted his enemies using the Necklace of Missiles' fireballs. Norgath slew Centeol, took her loot, and Chelak's body for Tibor and killed a few more spiders to reach level 10, his final BG1 level. His 20 skillpoints went to Detect Illusions. Combined with his racial 5 DI score, it gave him a 25% chance each round of dispelling invisibility and other illusions.
No longer craving XP, Norgath hurried his way through the forest to the Iron Throne base, but when he arrived he ran into four Iron Throne hirelings guarding the structure. Fortunately, they only proved a slight delay. He set his traps near the bridge to soften up / kill the warriors, drank an oil of speed that would facilitate hiding/backstabbing, and a potion of magic shielding to protect himself against the mages. Rezdan fell first, to a single backstab (after a critical miss had kept the more dangerous Kysus alive for the time being).Drasus was the second to fall, succumbing to Norgath's snares and a few melee hits. At that point Norgath had lost sight of Genthore, but ran into Kysus who promptly removed his magic shielding. The Dwarf responded by using a charge of the Sandthief's ring and drinking two potions of magic protection, before he finished the mage with acid arrows (while the wizard was stoneskinned) and arrows of biting (after the stoneskins had been consumed). Norgath finally found Genthore in a small storage room he had used before to hide in shadows. The fighter immediately followed the Dwarf outside, only to be eliminated by a backstab. With the four out of the way, Norgath entered the Iron Throne base, but it's late. I'm calling it a day.

Kira, 2nd BG1 update

A rather long session, but very few things done. Things go slowly without Wand of Fireballs...

Anyhow, first I wanted a 2nd mage (Xan). Thus we assaulted the mine, and had little trouble there. Mulahey managed to summon skeletons before he got silenced, then Edwin used his Sound bursts to get rid of them all.

10_zpsodws8052.jpg

The battle with the amazons was to be taken with great care,  since a backstab critical could level Kira instantly. He scouts out the opossition, attacks, while Xan slaps a Web and Viconia does a Silence, Edwin casts his Skull Trap.

11_zpsueudeqgs.jpg

We still had to endure a backstab since one of the amazons got invisible. She attacked Edwin, who switched to a melee weapon to avoid the damage bonus. No critical was scored, and he survived. After the backstab threat was gone, we had no trouble vs silenced enemies.

12_zpsf2y6odei.jpg

Killed the Revenant with a scroll of Flame Strike we found on dead bodies.

13_zpswuiqrk2n.jpg

Next we cleared out the Sirens using a Pro Poison scroll + Potion of Defense + poison arrows.

14_zpsn2y6wsge.jpg

Finishing that, we travel south to parlor with the cursed captain which brings us back to Nashkel. Kira gained level 6.

@Grond0: sad to hear that... Looks like is is time for Gror to step forward.

Thanks Serg, but according to my information Oin is Nain's father - so here he is :).

Oin - dwarf kensai (hour 1)

I thought I would go back for this run to playing in hour-long sessions.  Oin's start has all been regulation - Shoal, Beregost, Nashkel, basilisks, FAI, lighthouse being the rough route.

Oin has been quite aggressive in his tactics so taken rather more damage than would be typical for me.  He's never actually been that low on hits, but could easily have been in trouble if the enemies had got criticals at the wrong time.  For instance he's just finished killing the flesh golems, but only has 62 HPs (average just 2.5 per die roll so far - so back to normal for my kensais).  That meant that a decent hit by a golem followed by a high value critical could have been fatal, but none of them managed a critical (not that surprising as they were all killed within a round - one within a second).

He's just arrived at the Nashkel mine, ready to crack on with the main quest next time.
