Esher{3} - human amazon (1st and final update)

No joy once more.  Kagain hit Shar-teel (then gave her the chance to talk) then hit her again, which I thought should have been sufficient to get her to give up but she didn't do so.  Allowing her to hit Kagain just resulted in her claiming victory (she was still unkillable so I couldn't even take revenge for her cheek).  The first game I played she surrendered after a single hit, but I think that was a critical - I hope that doesn't mean she will only give in if damaged sufficiently with a single blow.

I'll have one more go and then try something else if that doesn't work.

@Aasim.   A screenshot showing the major features of the kit was in my earlier post.

Got it. It's from The Darkest Day mod.

This time I went to get Viconia before Shar-teel in order to be able to make it very clear to the latter that her position was hopeless - and this time she did surrender.
Shar-Teel_zpsitkaugql.jpg

Thinking about it I wonder if there's a bit of a conflict with level 0 NPCs with that fight - possibly if a first hit doesn't make her surrender, but then she takes more than her 20 starting HPs with a second hit that may tip her over into unkillable mode.  If that's the case then attacking her in future with darts should avoid the problem.

Given how difficult it was to get the group all gathered I'll see if I can manage to look after them now!

My progress going north worked in such a way as to allow my team to continue our progress while giving them a low threat reconnaissance on the areas of Coast Way & Lion’s way that were yet to be explored. They, we, all needed some down time, so after we’d rested well following the heartbreaking ordeal @ the Shipwreck Coast., I took us north on the Coast Way Road.

Everything worked out as planned. On the Coast Way, we walked over six Kobolds w/Short Bow & Short Sword; six Gibberling’s; 14 Diseased Gibberling’s; a pair of mated Dread Wolves; two pairs of mated Wolves; an Ogre & 18 Xvarts.

Key Event(s):  As far as key events go, there were none. The only moment of pause came when we were almost done on the Coast Way. We stumbled on three Bandits w/Short Bows & Long Swords led by a young woman in Splint Mail w/Long Bow & Long Sword. After the events @ the Shipwreck Coast the confident challenge made me think for a split second. I was most concerned about the new Mage hoping he’d use his Invisibility spells to protect himself. I noted he also cast Mirror Image so he must also have that one memorized. I released the team to act independently & pick target of opportunity & deal w/them as they determined best. We made short work of them & no one took a scratch.

BANDITS @ COAST WAY

We quickly finished our work on the Lion’s Way next. There we destroyed a pair of mated Dire Wolves; a pair of mated Wolves & six Diseased Gibberling’s.

At this point I feel good about having cleared the roads from Nashkel north to the FAI & eastward from Candlekeep to the Coast Way of monsters, creatures & hostile wildlife. We've also cleared those areas adjacent to the main road & south of Nashkel all the way out to the coast & eastward to & including most of the Wood of Sharp Teeth. People should be much safer travelling these roads & commerce should pick up slowly as people figure that out. Not much I can do about hostiles that return, as they are sure to do, but the original inhabitants are no more. The only areas I’ve yet to visit are Mutamin’s Garden & Durlag’s Tower. I’ve read much about Durlag’s Tower & I plan to visit there but not just yet. I want us to train together before we assault the keep there.

Treasure of Note: (Purse = 2,790 gold) Nothing to speak of. Minsc took the Splint Mail as a second set should his suddenly deteriorate.

Current Disposition: We sold the minimal loot, resupplied w/arrows & sling stones, had dinner & relaxed & recuperated @ the Red Sheaf.

Next Steps:  Mutamin’s Garden

Level Up: None

Current Party: (Reputation: 20 – Heroic)

QUICK FOLKS! i NEED HELP!!

In Mutamin's Garden, Jaheira, @ full strength w/o a scratch was on our right flank in a 'V' formation & had to move out wider b/c of obstructions in a tree line. One of the two Greater Basilisk's (or maybe both) that were w/Mutamin caught her w/their gaze. Obviously she failed one or both saving throws & was petrified. I continued the battle & defeated Mutamin & the two Greater Basilisks & went back to use Flesh to Stone on Jaheira.

But, I can't find her in the woodline. I've used 'Control, Tab' to locate her but to no avail.

The window that tracks the most recent actions doesn't go back quite far enough for me to see what her saving throw was & if, for some reason it indicates, Jaheira: Death.

Two questions:

1) Can a perfectly healthy 9th level NPC be 'chunked' by a Basilisk gaze?

2) Is there a way to be able to pull of the game log beyond what I can see in the window so I can see what it says there?

I've not closed the game b/c I don't want to do anything until I know for sure. HELP QUICK, PLEASE!!

Thanks, CKT

@CKT

The petrification effect doesn't "chunk" but any  damage animation does. I think their gaze attack also causes that animation (NI shows their gaze does 0d2+0 damage, but the game still counts it as a damage effect per animation purposes.)

It doesn't really matter if Jaheira's health was full or she was at 1HP for petrification chunk. I've also witnessed petrified people getting chunked for litteraly no reason at all (teleport field and similar effects).

As per 2) you can scroll upwards, usually shows a lot of stuff. I think you should at least see Jaheira:Petrified or similar (I'm not sure however).

Regrettably CKT it sounds almost certain that she was chunked.  The problem is that a gaze attack on a petrified form will always chunk it.  A basilisk won't deliberately continue to gaze at a petrified form, but this can happen with a single basilisk - especially at longer range when a follow-up gaze attack is launched before the former one results in petrification.  Where 2 basilisks are attacking a single target the high APR they have means it is extremely likely that petrification by one will be followed by chunking by another.

I hope you can find an NPC alternative that suits you in order to continue your good progress.

Thanks Aisim & Grond0, Is there a way to open up 'the console' or whatever to be able to see actions beyond what I can see on the playing screen?

Sounds like you're right, she took two gaze attacks, one from each Basilisk, & was, indeed, chunked. I want to double check before I leave though.

I'm not aware of any record other than that on the screen.  Normally the buffer for that is large enough to let you use the scroll bar to the right of the dialogue box to go back and see the results of quite a few recent fights - though that may not be the case if there have been some recent long conversations that fill up the buffer.

Esher{4} - human amazon (update 2)

In order to look after her party this time Esher started seeking out easy XP rather than vacuuming areas sequentially - that meant an early visit to the basilisks.  Esher soloed the southern monsters using a green scroll, but even though she dragged one of the ones near Mutamin back to the edge of the map Mutamin followed.  That could have been nasty, but Viconia's command worked and Mutamin failed to get up again.

After finishing off the basilisks the party rested and then recruited Korax.  The combination of him with stinking cloud looked like a sure fire winner, but Baerin wandered off when Edwin started casting those and was able to kill Korax when he attacked.  However, in coming back to get at the party he succumbed to the clouds to allow an easy victory.  The main loot from the area was a tome of wisdom.

After visiting High Hedge to buy a few spells for Edwin the group moved south.  They had a go at the Doomsayer, but no-one had a proficient weapon and needed a critical to hit and they decided to get a lift back to Nashkel with Brage rather than risk anyone dying.

With Edwin starting to get impatient they then went straight to the Gnoll Fortress to put an end to Dynaheir's trouble-making.  Having done that they were on the way out when Kagain was slow to react to some gnolls getting lucky hits (there was time to move away, but I wasn't concentrating closely and only started to move as he took the fatal hit) and he racked up the second party death.  After raising him the party decided to keep him sweet by going to find a caravan he was interested in.

Going on to the FAI Edwin found a useful ring in a hole in the ground (I installed the randomizer with a 20% chance of items being found in their original locations).  Montaron used his assassin poison for the first time there to ensure Tarnesh didn't recover from a backstab.  Shar-Teel also tried out a 2-handed sword +1 there and found it was actually a cursed berserking sword - the temple soon removed it.

Now that Edwin had 10 magic missiles available the party returned to the mine-site to confront the Doomsayer again.  The magic missiles got it to near death, allowing Esher to finish it with a first strike (amazon special ability that gives +20 THAC0, almost guaranteeing a hit).

There were more magic missiles for the Revenant, finishing him off before his paralysation attack could become too much of a danger.  The rest of that area was cleared as well, although Narcillicus' mustard jellies were quite hard - partly due to only 3 of the party having weapons that could hurt them.

At Firewine Bridge the group took down Meilum, but discretion overpowered valour and they left the ruins for later.

The vast majority of encounters to date have been handled with missile fire, sometimes with Kagain tanking.  That strategy is reflected in the kill numbers with Shar-Teel and Esher leading the way thanks to their grand mastery with long bows.

Esher, amazon 5, 61 HPs, 355 kills
Kagain, fighter 5, 47 HPs, 130 kills, 2 deaths
Montaron, assassin 6, 31 HPs, 58 kills, 0 deaths
Shar-Teel, amazon 5, 40 HPs, 296 kills, 0 deaths
Viconia, cleric 5, 29 HPs, 57 kills, 0 deaths
Edwin, conjurer , 26 HPs, 41 kills, 0 deaths

I think so.  The mod description just says:

  • Can use their female status to advantage by using first strike (this grants them +3 damage and a superb bonus to their THAC0 for only the first or second hit. This is due to the disrespect that their foes tend to give them as females.)
Looking at the difference in THAC0 after using the ability I saw a change of 20, though I haven't tested to see if that's level dependent at all.

OK, you all are still at it. Epic. Grond0, you even pulled this off with a wild mage?!! That blows my mind.

I haven't had time to play in several years, so I'm going to make this easier on myself. I'm using BG:EE. No SCS this time. In fact, no mods at all. Core rules. However, I'm going to add some personal touches: Raise Dead is not allowed for any character. And I have to role-play to the best of my ability. (That means no letting Montaron join the party just so I can feed him to the wolves. It also means no XP harvesting in places I shouldn't know about.) Finding diamonds and magic rings in trees, though, that's OK. I'm also going to make it easier on myself by making the updates short and sweet. (No stories this time, as fun as they are.)

New Entrant:

Alyson the Sorceress. Neutral good.

Stats = 88, max DEX, INT, WIS. Reasonable constitution and charisma. Low strength.

Today Alyson left Candlekeep. Lucky the guards in the streets were able to keep her alive when the assassins attacked. However, out in the forest, things didn't go so well for Gorion.

Key Event(s):  We’ve continued to travel w/heartache as one of our companions.  For the second time in a span of less than 10 days we faced the final death of one of our own; this time Khalid’s beloved wife & a friend & companion to us all, Jaheira.  Once again, I wonder, could I have been more careful. Especially after it was Jaheira who warned us all of the dangers of Basilisks in Mutamin’s Garden. I set us in our standard ‘V’ formation for wilderness expeditions, then sent Imoen ahead as a scout ‘Hidden in Shadow’ so that she could return & warn us of Basilisk’s giving us time to prepare, i.e., Quaff Potion of Mirrored Eyes or cast spells of Protection form Petrification’.

We killed four Gnolls & a Ghoul before I fought a duel w/a mouthy female warrior of some kind w/dual-handed swords. I won easily but spared her life.  Then we made quick work of a pair of mated Lesser Basilisks. Onward from there, we ran into six Gibberling’s & moved to swat them. As Minsc & I got to them & all of us began our assault, Jaheira had moved out to the far right to avoid some trees when she came upon a pair of mated Greater Basilisks, one of them enormous in size. At that moment, Mutamin himself came out from behind the trees & challenged us. As Jaheira tried to back out of range, she was hit with a Basilisks Gaze from both Greater Basilisks. She was Petrified once & then obliterated w/the second.

Minsc finished the Gibberling’s while I turned my companion’s on Mutamin.  I moved to take on the Monster Basilisk after having knocked down a Potion of Mirrored Eyes. I was hit multiple times w/their gaze &, despite the potion, their gaze rocks you when it finds its mark. While I was punishing the larger of the two, Minsc & the remainder of us finished Mutamin off. By this time, I was just finished killing the larger of the two Basilisks & heading for the second before the potion could wear off. Minsc & the others turned their attention on her also & we killed her as a team.

Then, not knowing Jaheira’s fate yet, we all went to find her so that we could use a scroll of Stone to Flesh to revive her. We looked everywhere & found nothing. Eventually, we all realized that a pile of stones & sand right near where she’d last been seen was the unwanted answer to her fate. Khalid just stood there, staring. Imoen walked over, even Minsc, to be with him in that moment while I stood taking this in from opposite him. After only a few moments that seemed like hours, he looked @ me & said, “Sh-sh-shall we be going? We’ve much work yet to do.” Imoen asked if he didn’t want to move the stones elsewhere or bury them. He replied, “N-n-no. I think she would want to remain here. With the Gnome destroyed, nature can return to its normal state here. Sh-she would want to remain her, I think. This pile of stones a monument to her commitment to defending nature.” He leaned down & took a small stone from the pile & placed it into a pouch on his girdle. Then he said, “She’ll always be w/me & after we’re done, I’ll return to this place where my beloved, Jaheira fell…Now let us destroy any more of these monsters at once!”  With that he turned & led us back to where we’d begun the seemingly quick battle w/the Gibberling’s. How quickly things can go wrong out here. There’s so much responsibility that comes w/leading warriors who trust you. Khalid’s correct. We have work to do…our fallen will not fall in vain nor shall their vengeance be dispensed w/o extreme prejudice!

From there we dispensed of, in order: four more Gnolls, four Gnoll Veteran’s, four adventurers…

78670e1c53d86b5f16bf5f394591bf.jpg
SHE PICKED THE WRONG DAY TO BE MOUTHY

…a Greater Basilisks mated with one of the lesser types, a pair of mated Lesser Basilisks, four Gnoll Elites; four Flinds & a lone Lesser Basilisk.

We travelled, troubled & silent back to Beregost. The weight of losing two such valued companions is heavy on me. When we returned I made business a priority to keep all of us from dwelling in that dark place for long. We sold substantial bounty, bought arrows & sling stones, rested @ the Red Sheaf, & then approached Kelddath @ the Temple of the Morning about a Cleric to aid our efforts.  He directed us to the Nashkel Carnival once again where he said we’d find a Priestess of Tempus who would add both strength to our front line & bring an offensive spell set.  I remembered her, we all did, but thought she would’ve moved on. As we travelled there, Khalid said to me, “We had to find another, you know? Jaheira who’d have wanted us to move on.” Sure enough the Priestess was there & joined us readily. I purchased her a set of Plate Mail, a Large Shield & a Warhammer & she provided us a Warriors feast as our first meal together.  And what a feast it was: roast lamb, salted fish & pork, goat & plenty of fresh bread, fresh fruit & honey on buttered bread & honey mead to wash it all down. I know of Tempus, The Lord of Battles, but nothing in the readings @ Candlekeep prepared me for a meal like that. (This is an innate ability of the Warrior Priest(ess) of Tempus kit).

Welcome back Blind Visionary and good luck.

Blaggerd has had a couple of unsuccessful restarts. First off, he upped his frame rate to 60 and set off from Candlekeep. Dealt with Shoal and got a mighty 27 out of 28 hit points as a result. Feeling smug he set off for Beregost, only for a ghast to ambush next to him (and outpace my reaction).

The next restart had a less impressive 17hp from Shoal, followed by 8 when returning Brage. A mistype saw the blackguard take a more appropriate reward (Greywolf's bounty) from Oublek than the usual reputation boost. By this time Blaggerd was picking up habits from Grond0 and merrily progressing without potions right up until he mistimed the basilisk approach. He was gazed before being able to activate the green protection scroll (reaction time again with a little bit of laptop scrolling mixed in).

Esher{4} - human amazon (update 3)

Esher is still going, though I don't think her party members are too pleased with her leadership.  It's probably time to make some progress on the main quest.

Moving north the party invaded the ankheg nest to get a bit more treasure.  A bit of charity for the farmer got reputation to 20 and Esher found the Greenstone Amulet at Ulgoth's Beard.

Now looking to do a few more difficult things the party took on Bassilus.  Montaron missed his poisonous backstab, but it was an easy victory anyway.  The coastal areas offered more of a challenge.  The first group of sirines at the lighthouse were difficult, but the party successfully took them down.  However, against the nereids I was concerned to keep Esher away from a chasing water weird and let it get too close to Edwin - he was caught and drowned within a second or two.  The first nereid was then killed, but Montaron was charmed and then became another drowning victim of the second before the others avenged him.

After returning from the temple the party found Sil and her sirines waiting.  They again did quite a bit of damage, but didn't quite inflict any more fatalities.  In the cave I had forgotten that I had now got traps installed there, but fortunately no one died of a resulting fireball.  The golems were quickly killed by magic arrows and Esher recovered the constitution tome - deciding to be selfish and keep it for herself.

Further north along the coast and Ogre Droth was encouraged to hand over a helm of defense - they also killed Shoal without talking to her again.  In the ship there was an apparent ring of wizardry, but Esher was highly suspicious and sure enough Mad Arcand recognised it as his own.  Having killed two lots of sirines already I was expecting the 3 sirines on this map to not be too much trouble, but unfortunately 3 of the party were charmed quickly and the other 3 were very unlucky trying to attack a sirine turned into jelly shape and casualties started.  One of those charmed was first feebleminded and then killed, but fortunately Esher, who was also charmed, had been hanging back and was not attacked.  However, by the time she recovered her senses only Montaron was left of her party - he had used a potion of speed to start using stealth attacks and had reduced the opposition to only a single badly wounded jelly.  With Esher back in action though he stopped being so careful and stayed in too long attacking the jelly - with the result he took a critical and was not just killed, but chunked!  Esher then finished off the jelly and cleaned up the remains of her party before heading for the temple.  With the others back in action she recruited Tiax as a replacement for Montaron.

Current party stats
Esher, amazon 6, 76 HPs, 481 kills
Kagain, fighter 6, 59 HPs, 175 kills, 3 deaths
Shar-Teel, amazon 6, 37 HPs, 402 kills, 1 death
Viconia, cleric 6, 37 HPs, 72 kills, 1 death
Edwin, conjurer 6, 31 HPs, 52 kills, 2 deaths
Tiax, cleric 5 / thief 5, 34 HPs, 0 kills, 0 deaths

Chunked
Montaron, assassin 6, 31 HPs, 81 kills, 1 death (+ 1 chunking)

Glad Esher survived those casualties with Nereids/Sirines. I have only BG2 experience with them being aTweaked (in the City of Caverns) and found out that fire(balls)/wands are best vs them as I believe Water Weirds have 99% resistance to all physical damage. I think, Grim should wait/grow in power a bit more before visiting those coastal areas...

Water Weirds have 99% resistance to all physical damage.

Damage fractions are rounded up, so they take 1 HP from each missile.  They don't have that many HPs so with a party it doesn't actually take long to shoot them down - you just need to be more careful than I was about letting them into touch range ...

Esher{4} - human amazon (update 3)

In the Nashkel mine Tiax decided to abandon the party.  I initially wondered if that was something I said, but then realised I had allowed reputation to soar to 20 with evil NPCs in the party - I'm too used to playing solo!  Viconia was quickly discarded and recruited again to reduce reputation to 18 before anyone else got ideas about running away.

After ploughing through the kobold hordes the party discovered Mulahey.  A potion of explosions dealt with most of his supporters and the cleric didn't last long against amazon arrows - his treasure included the boots of speed.  Esher recruited Xan as a replacement for Tiax, although his low HPs are likely to make him hard to look after.

Nimbul died in a stinking cloud and Tranzig to a magic missile / first strike attack before the party moved on to the Bandit Camp.  The group cowered in a corner there and tried to use stinking cloud and a few skeletons to hold off the bandit hordes.  They killed Taugosz, Ardenor Crush, Britik and a number of bandits like this, but also took quite a bit of damage in the process and several of them were blinded by glitterdust.  As a result they ran away to the FAI before anyone got killed.

Coming back with everyone invisible they looted the bodies and also noted that Venkt was standing there unsupported.  Even though most of the party were still injured that was too tempting a target and he was swiftly killed.  With the remaining bandits no longer co-ordinated it was possible to work through the Camp and finish the rest of them without retreating again.

After looting the tent and resting the party continued on to the Cloakwood.  In the first area they protected Aldeth from some druids.  In the second area Shar-Teel went off invisibly to trigger the web traps while the others stayed at the entrance to the area.  That nearly proved costly when 2 phase spiders teleported to them for no obvious reason (Shar-Teel wasn't near any at the time), but I noticed in time that Esher was poisoned and, unlike my solo attempts, she's free to take potions.  There was still a slight danger from the webs that the giant spider spit, but in fact the party was able to clear the outside area without difficulty.  Inside Centeol's lair the intention was for twin first strikes, + a pair of skull traps to kill Centeol and her spiders before they could act.  However, Centeol managed to fire her frost wand just before dying and Xan was fortunate not to be chunked.  The giant spiders were all dead within seconds though and none of the other enemies did much more damage.  Loot included the Golden Girdle along with another disguised Ring of Folly.

In the 3rd Cloakwood area I lost concentration again when doing what should have been a routing attack on a group of black bears - several quick hits on Kagain killed him just as he turned to run.  After another trip to support the FAI temple re-roofing project the party took a detour to Beregost to double-check for any useful magic weapons for sale (particularly an axe).  There were none of those, but Lamalha and her amazons chose to spring an ambush there.  However, they arrived rather spread out and Maneira went invisible just too late to avoid fatal incoming damage.  Lamalha died a few seconds later before the other two arrived just in time to rejoin their companions.

Esher then returned to the Cloakwood to tackle the druids.  Takiyah managed to cast an insect plague, but it bounced off Viconia's MR.  Izefia was silenced by Viconia after Xan did some invisible scouting, while Amarande was commanded to die by Viconia and did so.  None of them had anything particularly useful and nor did Peter of "subterranean trees" fame.

Coping well Grond0, good progress.
Respect also for your patience (I have difficulty playing full parties for the slower progress, though I find it nice to visit some of the less lucrative areas time and again.)

I allowed us to get off course on the way to Spider Wood & we ended up in Larswood again.  As a result we encountered three Ettercaps, seven Gibberling’s & two Hobgoblins (Ripper Tribe) w/Short Bows & Bastard Swords before I ever got us to our destination.

When we finally did get to Spider Wood the place lived up to its name.  We immediately came across three Huge Spiders & then an Ettercap.  We turned south & travelled w/a rocky, heavily wood line to our left. About half way through we fell upon a nest of spiders including a Sword Spider, a Phase Spider & six (or seven) Giant Spiders. A web trap sprung but both Minsc & I are able to negotiate freely in webs so we continued our work while the others stood back @ range, well except Branwen, she obviously likes getting into the fray & punishing enemies w/her Warhammer.

We followed that by defeating three Giant Spiders, three Ettercaps & six more Huge Spiders respectively.

Key Event(s):  We were just wrapping when we stumbled on the ruins of a temple. Moving closer we were attacked by four Red Wizards before we could even respond. I attacked followed closely by an Enraged Minsc. Khalid switched to Arrows of Biting, Quayle cast Deafness on the leader & Branwen cast Silence 15’ Radius in the midst of them. Imoen cast Magic Missiles at the wizards to disrupt their casting. None of the four of them ever got off a spell.

Nice work CKT, keep it up!

Jaob, Human Dragon Disciple, update 1

After a couple bouts of rerolling characters, I settled on the EE Sorcerer kit. It gives you -1 spell per level, so a maximum of 5 per spell level rather than 6, in exchange for +5 AC, a once-per-day fire breath AoE, +2 CON, a d6 hit die, and 100% Fire resistance over 20 or so levels. It's almost certainly weaker than Sorcerer itself, but at least for now the difference isn't so prominent. Here're his beginning stats,

I decided to max CON even though it doesn't give any real bonus besides having a possible 21 CON by level 15. It doesn't do anything besides minor regeneration, but sorcerers are notorious for needing no high stats anyways. It was really tempting to roll this illegally as a halfling for the shorty CON bonuses, but I'll play fair this time unlike my Barbarian/Thief combo.

From Candlekeep, Jaob makes the usual swing southwest to kill Shoal for the two levels. Melicamp is successfully restored to an, ahem, unfowl state for another 2k experience and reputation point, but not enough for a third level. I purchase a few scrolls from Thalantyr: 2x Summon Familiar, Sleep, and Protection from Petrification, before running out of gold. I thought that the scrolls would work like the spell, where you have to click a position to summon the familiar. All it did was cancel the spell, forcing the second purchase.

Sleep is used immediately for the four spiders in Landrin's house: all of them failed their save, and they never got a chance to wake up. Jaob's really close to leveling, so instead of heading straight for the basilisks, he goes north to kill an ogre and retrieve Evermemory. The assassin fight was kind of funny: I didn't rest beforehand, and my last spell went to Shield for the MM spam. It ended up, basically, as a cat fight as neither of us could really harm the other outside of 1d3 darts and quarterstaffs with Wizard THAC0s.

Turning in the quests knocks Jaob to level 4, and his first level 2 spell which goes to Web. It's time to hunt some basilisks. After recruiting Korax, we swept the top half of the map, though the AI got smart a few times and attacked Korax instead of trying to petrify him: by the time we killed the last Greater basilisk with Mutamin, Korax was at Near Death. He died (Can ghouls die? Destroyed?) after the second basilisk at the bottom of the map, and Jaob's Protection from Petrification spell has worn off by now, so it's high time to flee, and flee he did. He achieved level 5 though, and the second level 2 spell goes to Invisibility and 4th level 1 spell goes to Magic Missile.

At Nashkel, Jaob has to deal with the tedium of chasing down Neira as she runs randomly around under a Blind spell. Selling the Ankheg armor also gives him enough to purchase the Necklace of Fireballs, the only piece of gear he can really use at this point, and he's ready to assault the mines. Well, almost. First, I have to hit Greywolf, which proved to be a problem as Jaob refuses to roll higher than a 10 for quite awhile.

Jaob's traveling invisibly through the mines, letting his Pseudodragon familiar soak up the first two traps. The second one did 11 damage; does anyone know if it could've gone higher and killed it? Regardless, I decide to take the rest of the traps myself and heal using the Bhaal power. Mulahey dies without being able to say anything as three webs are fired at him. Outside, the Amazons die to the Necklace of Fireballs, and Nimbul's Magic Missiles are useless against a shield, while Jaob's are rather less so. Tranzig is killed with the same technique as his underling before Jaob moves on.

An Ankheg up north gives Jaob level 6, and his first level 3 spell which went to Fireball. I go on a mild spending spree now on an ioun stone and returning dart courtesy of RR, and the mandatory Greenstone amulet and Wand of Sleep. And since we're nearby, Jaob sacks the bandit camp. He only took damage from the wizard's Melf's Acid Arrow that I couldn't zone out in time: everyone else was caught in Webs outside and pelted to death. This message popped up after the battle, though: I have no idea what that means. The Sirines are also caught in the same trap and they give him level 7 and another 3rd level spell, Spell Thrust. He also received his final 1st level spell here, Identify. The Flesh golems are evaded invisibly, and Jaob Identifies and reads the CON tome for CON 20.

Selling all the loot, we have enough for the Cloak of Displacement and a recharge of the Wand of Sleep, the results of which can be seen here as Ankhegs can only hit on critical hits now, and Jaob was only hit once during the entire lair. He's now outside the Cloakwood mines: the encounter was neutralized by four or so webs and 3 or four Fireballs. None of them left their starting position.

I think both those traps do 2-12 damage, so could potentially have killed a familiar with 12 HPs (there's also a danger of familiars breaking morale when badly wounded, which could easily be fatal around there).

Well, no matter anyways, as Davaeorn cast some sort of Charm spell that I keep forgetting he has in his spell book. Back to Candlekeep, it seems!
