Alexandra was killed by Tarnesh. I suppose I should let the guards deal with him and that was my initial plan, but I got quite a bit cocky and attempted to get the meager XP. Oh well. It's a learning experience I guess. I'm going to switch it up a bit because I don't really like how this is going.

I feel I'm actually not very good at this game so I'm going to do a Fighter/Mage solo on Hard
Here are her stats
Fiona Alexandra female half-elf
Str 18/90 dex 17 con 18 int 15 wis 7 char 7

O.k, she died due to a bandit attack, I forgot not to skip maps...I rolled a new character named
Alexis her statistics are a bit different

Str 17 dex 18 con 18 int 15 wis 6 char 7

I'm remembering certain things thankfully....

I am ready for another no-reload attempt.
I rolled male elf Qenuhir. He is wise, but too weak to be cleric, so he became mage.

Posted Image

As in my previous attempt, he will try to beat this game solo on insane difficulty.
Qenuhir completed all starting quests and he is ready to leave Candlekeep.

Steb, NE male dwarf fighter/thief. With Kagain, Shar Teel (dualled), Montaron, Xzar (dualled) and Edwin.

Ulraunt doesn't believe we were just messing with Rieltar and locks us up, only for Tethtoril to let us out. Montaron can't find all the traps but his helm, boots, ring and cloak will help him survive.
Posted Image

A lightning bolt soon confirms this hypothesis, so he adds another ring of fire resistance taken from a nearby cache. A magic missile trap hits him for 15 damage. We'll just stand a bit further back from now on if that's OK Monty.

A web trap and phase spiders spice things up. Despite being held and bitten Kagain refuses to be poisoned and I'm using Spiders Bane to hack madly at anything that moves.

My first DUHM takes us straight through hasted doppelgangers but wears off before we encounter Prat. I am spotted so we have to make the most of bad positioning.
Posted Image

Once past Prat we deal with phase spiders and basilisks, scare Diarmid off and escape. I'm going to be front-man again so Kagain can throw axes from safety. Two flaming fist enforcers try to stop us (rep 3). It's nice to be despised again.

I tell Tamoko to take a hike before we storm the Flaming Fist HQ. They want to have some fun so Edwin warms them up while Xzar ensures we have the last word.
Posted Image

I patiently wait for Rashad the "healer" to haste (our traps injured him), hit him once and then chase him until I can kill him. Then we return Duke Eltan to safety, murder our way up the Iron Throne HQ and kill Cythandria. I take on the ogres single-handedly while my companions wander around confused. A temple visit is required so Kagain can apologise for killing Montaron.

Slythe is backstabbed by Shar Teel before being killed by Montaron, Kristin is cleaved with my sword. Bill the guard wrinkles his nose in disgust but lets us in to the coronation. Two minutes later Liia is dead, Sarevok has fled and Belt has sent us after him.

Steb, fighter 6 thief 6. 321 kills, greater basilisk.
Heavy crossbow of accuracy, Spiders Bane.

Kagain, fighter 7. 286 kills, Andris.
Battle axe +2, axe +1.

Shar Teel, thief 7 fighter 6. 175 kills, greater doppelganger.
Composite longbow +1, Varscona.

Montaron, fighter 6 thief 6. 128 kills, Jalantha Mistmyr.
Hakts bow, short sword +1.

Xzar, cleric 6 necromancer 6. 64 kills, battle horror.
Sling +1, war hammer +2 Ashideena.

Edwin, conjurer 7. 53 kills, Tuth.
Sling +1, quarterstaff +3.

Steb, NE male dwarf fighter/thief. With Kagain, Shar Teel (dualled), Montaron, Xzar (dualled) and Edwin.

We set sail before Mendas gets to hear the counting house is full of rotting corpses. After a shipwreck we cut through lycanthropes to find a second wrecked ship. I lead the way into each level with Kagain following then Shar Teel and Montaron, with Edwin and Xzar arriving last. Edwin uses malison/emotion to help us, while Xzar uses doom.
Posted Image

Kaishas Gan and her clan turn out to be more lycanthropes. Die!
(forgot the screenshot - oops)

Mendas is Selaad. Selaad is dead.
Posted Image

Or is he - I can't remember who is who. Anyway, he's dead.

After figuring out that the Iron Throne was to blame for the major troubles in the region, Tolman turned his sights to Baldur's Gate.  He and his gang of small adventurers (and a bard) traveled the city to learn more before confronting anyone about the iron shortage.  Besides, he had stumbled upon a powerful ally in Scar of the Flaming Fist.

Tolman found much to do in the city:  impolite mages in the Sorcerous Sundries, jobs to do for the thieves guild (Alora knew the guildmaster), surprise encounters in varoius houses (not everyone was nice to visitors), and various intrigues (Ramazith/Ragefast, Brielbara/Yago, Nemphre/Arkion, etc.).  In Ramazith's tower, there was a close call fighting ghasts, but quick ranged attacks saved the helpless Yeslick and Quayle.

Posted Image

Tolman was also asked by one resident to retrieve the body of his son from the Temple of Umberlee.  Tenya, who Tolman had met earlier, was willing to help out, but she was very nasty about the whole thing.  Later on, Tolman needed something from the high priestess, and she was nasty about that business, too.  He ended up just taking what he needed.

Carrying out Scar's requests (and helping Aldeth) led to the discovery of many dopplegangers in the city.  Tolman helped a cursed man named Ghorak, stoped a rampaging basilisk, found a book for a bard, and helped a mother deliver a gift to her son.  They also returned to the thieve's guild for their reward, but it did not work out as planned.  Due to the party's combat abilities, however, Resar died instantly to many quick hits, even before Narlen appeared!

Posted Image

Tolman found a house full or horrors, and his gang prepared for a large battle by readying wands and summoning hobgoblins.  Then Kagain lured the monsters out into the streets.  The battle was long but rather uneventful.  Between the summons and Kagain's tank abilities, eventually most of the monsters were paralyzed (it seemed that the invisible stalkers were better at saving against wands).  After that, the fight was no trouble at all.

Posted Image

From there the Tolman met the owner of the house, freed some adventurers, found a magic helmet, and then faced a different adventuring band which was not as friendly.  In this play through, Gorpel Hind did not join the battle.  It ended up being a fun battle as only Quayle got hit with a bad spell effect.  Also, one of the Maulers, Wilf, ran out the door despite not having a morale failure.  I guess he was making room to cast spells?

Posted Image

In the sewers the party exposed a murderous Ogre Mage, much to Scar's delight, and also cleared out other sewer infestations.  Of note was the Sewer King, who Kagain soloed just fine, despite being on the receiving end of 3 citical hits in a row (at -15!).  (Kagain saved all three times, but I am curious what effect the Sewer King's attack can cause.)  After reporting success to Scar, the party took a break from official Fist business and traveled away from the city to hunt Ankhegs.

Back in Baldur's Gate, the party rested and then met with Scar and Duke Eltan.  They entered the Iron Throne headquarters and made it to the top easily.  Garrick read a magic protection scroll and went up to the top floor with wands ready.  He got one fireball blast off, but took fast arrow damage so he retreated back down.  The battle became really interesting because the merchants went hostile, and the archer (Cloudwulfe) came down the other stairs.  The mages wasted a lot of spells on Garrick and Kagain made lots of saves, so it was really only Cloudwulfe who did any damage (a bit each to Tolman and Yeslick).  After that was cleared up on the floor below (with no innocents killed, I might add!), the last three upstairs (Alai, Gardush, and Thaldorn) were very easy for the party to deal with.

Posted Image

The party rested again (Tolman got dream #4), and then they made preparations to pay Duke Eltan a return visit.

My notes show that everyone except Tolman got a level during this play session.  Tolman will probably get one more thief level at 110k experience before the end and maybe another fighter level at 125k?  Of course, this assumes I make it all the way, but I am feeling good about this party.  I have not seen any party member deaths in a while despite a number of slipups.  Keep your fingers crossed.

--------------------------------

By the way, all the challenges seem like a lot of fun and are certainly a lot of fun to read about.  I only wish I had more time to play.

Steb, NE male dwarf fighter/thief. With Kagain, Shar Teel (dualled), Montaron, Xzar (dualled) and Edwin.

Durlags Tower can wait for another day (don't feel like it this time) so I track down Sarevok. Monty takes the thieves maze in his stride and we enter the undercity where a group of mercenaries are waiting for us. I sneak close to them and put my armour on behind a wall, cast DUHM then step out to dance.

Malison/silence, doom/slow.
Posted Image

Arrow of detonation (Rahvin), emotion/hold person, fireball.
Posted Image

Tamoko lands two flame strikes on me before we kill her. Impressive spell-focus from her.

Sarevok attacks me as Semaj teleports into our two stinking clouds. I've used a protection from magic scroll. Shar Teel has used an arrow of dispelling on Semaj so he gets a face full of missiles.
Posted Image

Sarevok saves against two paralyzation wands but stops moving.
Posted Image

Angelo badly wounds Xzar and kills Semaj while aiming at me, then Shar Teel dispels his protection and the stinking cloud overwhelms him.
Posted Image

She kills him.
Posted Image

Montaron kills Tazok and we all gang up on Sarevok.
Posted Image

Edwin thinks he has the kill with magic missiles but Shar Teel is shown as having the last hit.

Steb, fighter 6 thief 7. 356 kills, greater basilisk.

Xzar, cleric 7 necromancer 6. 67 kills, battle horror.

Congrats Gate70.

Here's my short update

After completing various odd quests and blinding and killing Tarnesh, Alexis compiled several spells in her spellbook even though she had only leveled as a fighter. After arriving in Nashkel, she entered the Inn only to be assailed by yet another assassin, this time called Neira. Alexis cast mirror image from a scroll, and then cast blindness on Neira. This blinded Neira and left her ripe for Alexis's arrows.
Greywolf(the guy from the Nashkel Mines) is slain in a similar fashion. Once blinded, he is helpless. It was interesting to see that he had at least seventy hitpoints, he was one tough cookie to say the least. Alexis has access to mirror image now.

Congratulations Gate70! And good luck in BGII.

Cheers,

Btw. I really like your Malison-> Silence combo. It's the range of those two spells that makes it a winner. I'll remember that one.

;)

You know, when I saw you rolled a Diviner I was going to post to remind you how powerful Blindness is in BG1. I fell asleep before getting around to it. I'm glad you remembered. Now you have a way to get Alexis some levels. :)

Good to see you back in the action Shadow_Leech007!

Btw. You're braver than I am. Alastria is approaching level 7 and I still haven't taken done Tarnesh. I wanted to get the Greenstone Amulet first so I wouldn't have to risk sacrificing the Potion of Clarity from Winthrop's.

Back sooner than I planned, really sloppy I'm afraid.

Not a good idea to dump Imoen with a rubbish traps/locks score. I took a couple of minor poison traps with 1hp/second (helm of Balduran room) and gulped potions of healing. Then hit a 3rd in the alarmed room past the dryads, gulped a healing potion then realised it was doing a lot more damage per second. I couldn't gulp a potion of extra healing in time.

Good luck everyone, will have a brief think before selecting the next class.

Sorry to hear that. The thing to do when hit by those traps is to rest immediately. You won't take the full trap damage if you do that.

(I realize this may be considered cheesy.)

Update on soloing elven mage Qenuhir:
After Gorion’s death, Qenuhir traveled to Beregost. He managed to kill some lesser monsters with his sling, including the ogre wearing the belt of piercing. In Beregost, he calmed Marl, bought book for mage Elvenhair, killed ogrillons and retrieved letter from Mirianne’s husband, and returned thief Zhurlong his boots of stealth.
Qenuhir also visited mage Thalantyr in High Hedge and cleared the area from some gnolls, spider and bears. In Beregost temple area, Qenuhir defeated Cattack and his hobgoblins. So far, he uses mostly his sling +1 together with Blindness and Shield spells.Qenuhir is currently level 3 mage with 13HP.

Oh thank you ! Yes blindness does seem to be very powerful. I think it wasn't a matter of bravery however it was more desperation because the guy in Friendly Arm restocks arrows. :P

As for Tarnesh, I don't have SCS installed, or BGTutu for that matter so I'm not sure how he changes in your game.

I won't lie to you though, when I was playing the Diviner I was completely lost.

Note on Alastria's Game:

I thought I'd post on the Mulahey fight. This was an easy victory for Alastria, however, it was more costly than it should have been. It may end up being an excellent example of how easy it can be to ****** up a solo No Reload in BG1.

The Plan

Buff with Strength, Shield, Blur, Protection from Evil, Mirror Image, and the Greenstone Amulet. Wear the Girdle of Bluntness. This will protect against mind effects and insure that only Critical Hits will land.

In a Critical Hit only battle, all targets are ~equally dangerous. So, thinning fodder is priority one. The Necklace of Missles was reserved for that job. Once Mulahey is alone, Alastria will have the AC/THACO advantage. Alastria wins

The only tricky part would be preserving her precious Potions of Freedom. Here was the approach:

1) Buff
2) Confront Mulahey, then take a shot at Blinding him ASAP.
3) If failed, take a second shot at Blinding him in the round when he casts Resist Fear on his minions.
4) Run South, discharge the Necklace of Missles- trying to catch Mulahey in the blast radius.
5) If Mulahey is Blind at this point, then Darts. If not, then bite the bullet, drink the Potion of Freedom, and then go Vampiric Touch-> Chill Touch.

Execution

Attempt 1: The first attempt was a complete fiasco. Alastria decided to buff in the cavern near the door. Mulahey heard her and interupted while The Tweedles was casting Strength on Alastria. So, Alastria is unbuffed, the Tweedles is out and visible, and she is surrounded by Mulahey and minions. That's a loser.

Alastria picked up The Tweedles and took off.

Attempt 2:

Alastria buffed outside the Cavern. But, unnerved by her earlier failure, she pre-buffed with a Potion of Freedom this time. She entered Invisible and headed to the North of the Cavern.

Posted Image

She broke Invisibility by picking up The Tweedles, and then discharged the Necklace of Missles.

Posted Image

This is essentially a win at this point. All that's left is the Endgame.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Victory. But at a cost: Alastria really couldn't afford to use that Potion of Freedom. There is a lot of road between now and the Ring of Free Action. This seemingly simple battle may come back to haunt her.

Best,

A.

Btw. Some of you may be wondering about the orange icon on Alastria's portrait. The Greenstone Amulet didn't block the Rigid Thinking portrait icon but it did block the effect.

Which ring are you talking about - are you ruling out the one Dushai has on RP grounds?

That's kind of you to say. I've learned from your posts as well.

Which ring are you talking about - are you ruling out the one Dushai has on RP grounds?

Case in point. I didn't know about that one. :)

Alastria wouldn't kill her- that's for sure. I could see Chaotic Good Alastria justifing grabbing Imoen and pickpocketing it if she started to feel the fate of the Sword Coast rested on her shoulders. She's not there yet. If she gets down to 1 Potion of Freedom, she may have a change of heart though...

Thanks.

Cheers,

A.

Belix, LG human male cavalier.

BG/TotSC/patch/EasyTUTU on Linux/Wine.

Str 18/00
Dex 18
Con 18
Int 5
Wis 13
Cha 17

** 2HS, ** 2 handed weapon style.

We must leave Candlekeep, I've chunked two assassins already today.

Gorion is dead and I can't think what to do so Imoen takes charge. She immediately recruits a ranger called Kivan, who guides us to Beregost. A bard called Garrick joins us after I terminate his previous employer. I buy them some missiles and give a book to Firebead Elvenhair before we head south.

On the way Kivan kills an ogrillion, and I chunk a second. When we reach Nashkel Imoen and Kivan locate some ankheg plate mail for me, then we speak to Noober, Oublek and Berrun Ghastkill. It seems this mayor wants us to sort out problems with their mine. Imoen says this will be no problem for four adventurers as experienced as we are.

Day 3 hour 7. Nashkel mine is dark, wet and smelly. Garrick raises the atmosphere with his songs (doom doom doom which sounds like something he has plagiarised) and we kill two kobolds before pressing on. Miner Beldin is killed by four kobolds and I take a bad wound so have to gulp a blue potion. Then I have to cure my wounds just a bit further on but I am a paladin and I won't back down (no shield, no belt & 5 potions = trouble). The final group of kobolds in this second area force another potion out of me.

We try luring kobolds off a trapped bridge. It works well, until more kobolds appear from behind and flank us. We re-group (a bit like running away but sounds better).
Posted Image

We cut down the melee opponents so I can close in on the ranged attackers, and our luck holds. Then we make our way across the bridge, kill another kobold and I keep my distance from a ghast until our missiles bring it down. Two huge spiders are next, then Kivan questions if he could have charmed one. Too late now, must push on.

Imoen wants to sketch me for posterity (well that's the likely scenario next), only then do I realise my sword is history and I'm lumbered with a bit of wood (and not even Silke's staff at that). It would be foolhardy to continue.
Posted Image

I decide to preserve my potions and continue injured. We draw more kobolds back to the spider enclave and kill them as two more appear from over the bridge. When they are dead Imoen deals with three traps and we move on to kill another kobold.

I'm still wounded and an easy target, so Kivan slips into the shadows and attacks a kobold commando with his halberd. It is immediately chunked! We rush to help him with the two remaining kobolds but the battle is over before I arrive. A ghoul is dismissed before we enter what must be the final part of the mine. Kivan fails to charm a kobold so we kill them and lure Mulahey to us.

I gulp an oil of speed and start clobbering skeletons while my companions shoot the kobolds.

Mulahey is next. He makes Kivan think rigidly.
Posted Image

Luckily Kivan is still hitting and disrupting him. Then he gets bored and wanders in, allowing Mulahey to up the ante.
Posted Image

Imoen uses a wand of missiles to disrupt his next spell (why didn't I think of this earlier).
Posted Image

Mulahey cries for mercy but Imoen is wise to his diversion. She disrupts another spell with her wand, and his next attempt is his last.
Posted Image

Kivan swings his bow round as Imoen and Garrick scream.
Posted Image

So ends the tale of Belix the level 1 cavalier.

The Bandit Camp or What to Do When the Plan Goes South (And You Never Really Had a Plan to Begin With)

This is my first full SCS playthrough. And while I've been reading the posts of other challenge participants, I've been intentionally skimming the segments that I haven't seen yet. I wanted surprises. Be careful what you wish for as they say...

Alastria approached the Bandit camp without any expectations. Your humble narrator anticipated a mildly altered standard bandit camp run. I was wrong. Alastria was shocked. She pulled out the victory though- no thanks to me.

Not expecting much, Alastria approached the camp from the North. There are a lot of obstructions on that side, and given her low missle weapon AC and newly discovered Minute Meteors, she has a comparative advantage at range- so long as she isn't heavily outnumbered. Everything went well untill she saw this.

Posted Image

Ok so now she's heavily outnumbered. Turn tail.

She ran. But she hit a spell of bad luck: 2 consecutive criticals. One of them was nasty.  She ran harder and made her 700th wish for an Ioun Stone.
Posted Image

Fortunately, she picked up a Potion of Extra Healing in an earlier fight. Now seemed like a good time to use it. Mmm. Good.
Posted Image

At this point, I still thought this was just a matter of culling foder.  Wrong. Venkt showed up. Alastria immediately activated the Greenstone Amulet, and fled further from the camp. Venkt hit Alastria with one spell: Slow. Counter: Alastria- Oil of Speed.

So now she has a normal movement rate but some of her enemies are Hasted. Why not use their speed to her advantage? She ran as far as she could from the camp to seperate the Hasted Taugosz and his Black Talon Elites from the rest- being sure to keep Mirror Image up in case Taugosz gets in a swing.

And then -when she has some space and a clear Aura- Blindness. Success.
Posted Image

Taugosz is basically dead now. Alastria can get him whenever she wants. It isn't the time though: his AC is to low, and there are too many range fighters in the vicinity. Keep running.

At this point the Slow effect wore off, but Alastria's Oil of Speed was still runnning. And with her low Missles AC and Vampiric Touch enhanced low 50s Hitpoint total, she was in a good position to do some recon. She circled back. And here's what she saw: Venkt, followed by Raemon, Britik, Hakt, and a whole bunch of fodder. Pretty spread out though...Time to make a stand.

Mirror Imageless Venkt: Meet Melf.
Posted Image

You're going to kill me with Arrows Raemon? Good luck with that.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Britik? Too slow, no ranged weapon. Irrelevant. Hakt got Darts, and a Necklace of Missles blast while Britik stomped around and growled. Britik got darts soon after. The fodder got darts and a Missle when they bunched.

Phew.

Ok. Time to check on Taugosz...He's stil blind. But he's also still wearing that Full Plate and Alastria is plum out of spells. She's low on darts too- not to mention Necklace of Missles charges. If only he wasn't wearing all that metal...Metal. Hmm. Now there's an idea...
Posted Image

The Wand of Lightning finished him. The end.

Comments

That was sloppy. And it certainly wasn't a typical Alastria-melee oriented fight. But staying alive is a lot better than sticking to the plan- especially when you never really had a plan at all. :)

Alastria is not looking forward to whatever is in that tent...

Best,

A.

Sorry for your loss Gate70.

The Cavalier kit is interesting in SCS. Charm, Fear, and Poison immunity should be really helpful.

I considered it recently. If Throwing Daggers and Axes weren't so unwieldy and expensive I might have done it.

Best of luck with your next character.

I've never had much success using rigid thinking myself, but SCS users have caused me trouble with it on a number of occasions.

Yeah. It's not a great spell- single target Confusion with no save penalty isn't terribly exciting. But it lets you use Level 3 to get another disabling effect into the mix. It also forces opponents to defend against both Movement Restriction (Hold Person) and Mind Effects.

SCS casters do the right thing to my mind: they prioritize Hold Person at Level 2, but then try to make use of Rigid Thinking at 3.

Quick Note on Alastria's game:

The camp is clear. She's headed to the Cloakwood with Antidotes in tow.

Here is her current character info.

Spell Picks

Level 1: Blindness, Chill Touch, Protection from Evil, Shield, Spook
Level 2: Blur, Mirror Image, Strength
Level 3: Vampiric Touch, Melf's Minute Meteors

Proficiencies: Darts, Daggers

At this point, she's basically the same character that I started BGII with and No Reloaded up to Suldanesselar. She's looking forward to getting Polymorph Self.

Best,

A.

Another short update

Alexis fights Bassilus
The first assault by Alexis allowed her to blind Bassilus, however, once she hit him, his minions immediately hostiled her. This forced her to retreat as she took out his minions. She rested in the northern part of the map and re-upped mirror image and then put her plate mail back on and assailed Bassilus once more. He managed to get two hold spells off but Alexis was too far away for the spells to affect her(or maybe she saved against the spell? Who knows). A wolf tracked her down evidently, so she stood her ground and slew it. She once more blinded Bassilus and this time took him down with her arrows. Alexis bought several items(wands and spells) from the gold obtained.

Alexis fights Silke
A shady employer had hired Alexis, and feeling that something was awry, Alexis refused to do the job. She had buffed mirror image and drank a potion of insulation in anticipation to deal with the so-called 'thugs'. Instead, she faced Silke instead. Silke began to cast a spell, but Alexis cast faster then her and darkness soon surrounded Silke's eyes. Blinded and unable to see, Silke was fodder for Alexis's arrows. Afterwards, she ventured back the place where she had slain Bassilus and killed some additional enemies who were actually immune to blind, which was a first. Eventually Alexis did manage to slay them and then sold the short sword for a nice two thousand gold which she used to buy more spells. Before heading to the Nashkel mines, Alexis needed to speak with a commoner about her husband. Took her several attempts to bash in the door but in the end it worked. Now she was ready for the mines.

Common Tactics
Alexis is now a level 4 mage/ level 4 fighter. I keep her plate armor on when walking around, something I never did in Baldur's Gate 2 with my F/Ms. When she encounters a hostile group she runs off and takes off the armor and then buffs her defensive spells and then re-engages. If I get the chance I'll post the pictures in an album. I'm too lazy ATM to convert to jpg.
