Congrats Grond0. Double post. :(

Maybe edit one of these to give an update when I have more time. Am about to go out for the evening.

Going to hear George Verwer, who you have probably never heard of.

One of my heroes who I met in Nepal.

Felisin's diary: Day 2 – part I.

The night of our hasty departure from Candlekeep has turned my entire existence into a living nightmare. Ambushed in the woods by an overwhelming band of professional mercenaries, the succession of events ultimately escalated with father's demise. I felt him unleash an incomprehensible surge of power towards our attackers before his eyes found me for the briefest of moments, wherein I saw the desperate wish telling me to fly. I believe he smiled that kind and peaceful smile of his even as that massive armored leader of the band was approaching him with murderous intentions.

There is no telling of how long I ran before I stumbled upon a tree root and fell heavily to the ground, ending up winded. Echoes of the conversation that preceded the furious attack came up crushing on me with all the weight it carried. "Hand over your ward..." he said. But before I could fix my wandering thoughts on the terrifying consequences of this recall I have passed into a blissful unconsciousness…

I woke up as a living corpse, battered and desperate, and every single part of my mind wanted to refuse the world, to twist the time and space into a harmonic void. Wandering without any purpose, my legs finally collapsed underneath the weight of my conscience. I looked up upon the rising sun and started crying. A soft voice came to me that sounded like as spoken in an alien language and suddenly Imoen’s sweet face - that sweet face freed of all distress - came into view. I sincerely have no doubt that Helm, in his eternal wisdom, did nothing to guide her to me then. As only by understanding the subtle but endless strength of mortal spirit, one might be able to come to terms with God. And thus, as of that day with Imoen, my faith became unflinching...

I duly apologise to all of you for the slow pace of the story underway :).

A bit of advise, if you want it: warriors (Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, and Barbarians) all have bonus HP per level for CON 15 or greater. The common benchmark you'll see is 18 CON, which gives Warriors 4 extra hit points per level, or 19, granting 5 HP per level for the first 9 levels. On the other hand, everything else only benefits for CON up to 16. Unless you're a Halfling, Gnome, or Dwarf, in which case max that sucker anyways. Wisdom is the second typical dumpstat for Fighters in specific unless you plan on dualing to Cleric.

Anddd I just realized you're also playing with SCS on BG1. Good luck; I don't have the patience to play chess against spell casters where saves are constantly >10 and one wrong move or so is complete and utter destruction. One trick you can probably use to get enough EXP to survive the first few levels is the Basilisk area, and the Protection from Petrification sold at the Nashkel carnival. If you need gold first, Evermemory from the tree at the FAI sells for 9k, easily enough for that and the Necklace of Missiles. Granted, it's cheesy and metagame-y as nothing else, but I'm of the opinion that not metagaming vs SCS is a death wish anyways.

@Epsil0: Thanks for the advice. Living on the edge is how I roll. In addition to SCS, I also have item randomiser or some such, so there's nothing in the tree at FAI and who knows where the necklace of missles is. At least I don't have Hard Times installed. Gold and HP are not my problem, so much as nailing down a smart strategy. So I'm likely to pollute the thread with a lot of dead characters... hopefully you all find it entertaining enough. I'll refrain from telling you all how proficient I am against Reevor's rats, at least ;)

Just beginners luck I expect .

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (update 1)

I was toying with a couple of ideas on what to do next, but after reading about Norgath's progress I decided to copy Blackraven and see how far I can get with a bounty hunter.  Fin won't be making use of any potions, which may well cause him problems at the palace if he gets that far ...

Here he is having just left Candlekeep.

It is possible to get inside the Inn without fighting him if as he comes towards you you go around the temple. Inside you can get some allies to fight him.

Either that or just leave him until later.

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (update 2)

Despite Fin's supposed mastery of traps it took him numerous failed attempts to finally set one ready to kill Xzar following a backstab.  However, by the time he'd done various tasks around Beregost he was up to level 4 and his 90% in set traps at that point meant failures in future were few.  Most of the significant enemies were wounded or killed by traps - here Meilum is surprisingly killed by just a couple of traps.  The basilisk area was an exception with the monsters being meleed and Mutamin killed by Korax, although Kirian's crew died almost entirely from traps.

He found a +1 shortbow in the tree near the Nashkel mine, before heading into that.  He got delayed on the top level there when the kobolds moved round and formed a road block.  While attempting to wait for that to clear Fin's stealth broke and he got cornered - luckily he'd bought the Necklace of Missiles to blast a way out!

Mulahey was encouraged by stealth shots to walk into traps and Fin found the cleric had stashed some Boots of Speed in his chest - for the time being though he's sticking to using his Boots of Stealth.  Back in Nashkel Fin used stealth to go in and out of the inn backstabbing Nimbul before laying traps for Tranzig.

He's currently at level 7 and will be off to the Bandit Camp shortly.

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (update 3)

Fin had an extremely long and difficult battle at the Bandit Camp, but eventually triumphed.  The sheer number of archers with the ability to track the party anywhere on the map makes the bandit camp potentially tricky for most solo characters, but the problems were multiplied early on when Molkar's ambushers turned up.  With two more casters in addition to Venkt he had to beware instant spell death as well as critical arrows hits.  As a result he bounced in and out of the area quite a few times while running round the edge of the map trying to find a bit of space to lay traps, but only killing the odd bandit.

I eventually got bored with the slow progress and stuck around at one point long enough to fireball Venkt (already badly damaged by traps) and kill him.  However, Fin received a number of attacks in response and was taken down to a single HP - leaving the area just in time to avoid a critical hit arrow that would have killed him.  It still took a long time after that, but the job got easier when he finally finished off the casters and then, as the hordes of archers started to run out of arrows he switched to running and backstabs to finish the remaining enemies and move on to the Cloakwood.

@Grond0 Sounds like quite a battle. When Molkar turns up there, it becomes quite an issue.

Lofty the dwarf enters the fray.

http://i1108.photobu...ty/Baldr000.jpg

Because of how difficult Tristan and Isolde are, I decided to use a potion of freedom. After that they were not difficult. :)

After clearing the road to Nashkel, I headed westward to the sirene area. The first runs I had with a similar character ended there as in this set up no helm to protect from the sirene. This time vaded them until better equipped and headed south instead.

Brute force and ignorance prevailed there against the doomsayer.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 71 - (1st and final update)

Tag, dwarf fighter/thief (Grond0) & Gharr, half-orc fighter/thief (Gate70)

After the disappointment of losing our berserker/druid and kensai/mage combination just as they were starting to fulfil their potential we started another run with a pair of fighter/thieves.  They were in trouble early on when movement around Arabelle activated a chasing ogre berserker and friends.  After running them round for a while Tag came across an ogre mage as well and got taken to single figure HPs from an acid arrow and magic missiles.

Unfortunately no lessons were learned from surviving that fight as they moved on to confront Meilum.  Tag tried standing up to him in order to allow Gharr to move in for a backstab, but got hit in the process.  He tried moving away pretty quickly after being hit, but Meilum proved to be quicker on the draw and a second hit was too much for Tag to handle ...

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 72 - (update 1)

Tag, dwarf fighter/thief (Grond0) & Kriax, dwarf kensai (Gate70)

No one can say we're not suckers for punishment as we looked to set a new record of 3 runs terminating on the same day.  However, this time that was not to be ;).

Thus far it's been pretty standard stuff - Shoal, Beregost, Nashkel, Greywolf (for his sword), basilisks, Cloudpeaks.  After killing the basilisks Korax had a run in with some gnolls on the way to Kirian's party and was badly wounded on arriving there.  He didn't then last long, but provided enough confusion for Kriax to send a couple of axes hurtling in to kill Kirian.  Lindin then chased the duo on his own - which was a bad idea for him - while Baerin also moved a bit too far to be protected by Peter (allowing both of them to be backstabbed).

Tag%20L4_5_zpsmyzqyjnj.jpg

Kriax%20L5_zpssyakvkxz.jpg

Stats:

Tag fighter 4 / thief 5, 42 HPs, 30 kills

Kriax, kensai 5, 58 HPs, 48 kills, 0 deaths

Next it was due north to the Fishing Village. We’d already been through the Fishing Village earlier when we travelled to Baldur’s Gate the first time but we stayed to the road. This time, as with places south, I had us clear every threat that would/could hinder travelers using that important thoroughfare between The FAI & Baldur’s Gate. The Fishing Village did not yield any large or difficult battles & it was nice that it was so after the difficulties we’ve faced together in recent days. We defeated eight Bandits & seven Ankheg’s as we worked our way through the area. Branwen improved her best kill to an Ankheg.

We came upon some of the local fisherman in a hamlet & they complained vociferously about a Priestess of Umberlee that was preventing them from fishing, their livelihood. They claimed she’d even killed one of them w/rough seas she is able to conjure up @ will. They told us we’d find her in a shack north of the hamlet but it was all the way into Wyrm’s Crossing. We found her easily enough & she was indeed belligerent & attacked us. We’d started to dismantle her & she was unable to cast even a spell. She suddenly begged for mercy & told us that the fisherman had killed her mother & taken a bowl from her that could control the seas, Bowl of Water Elemental Control. In the end we killed her but I’m pretty sure her story was true. It’s just that she’s a Priestess of Umberlee & that means there’s one less evil priestess out there. Still on return to the fisherman it became clear that they were lying & I had a good mind to unleash on them. But…I decided it wasn’t worth it & the deaths of backwater fisherman wouldn’t solve anything. They paid up w/a Flail +1 which has Minsc thinking he was to learn to weapon style fighting for those times when Spiders Bane isn’t the answer.

Key Event: I was given the sad task of helping an old farmer locate his missing son. The answer was simple based on tracks he showed us & an underground tunnel that led to a series of Ankheg Tunnels, we were later to learn. We had little trouble in the burrows, killing 11 Ankheg’s. Ankheg’s always have a gem or some gold on them but in the burrow there was a treasure in a small cave in the wall. We found, amongst gyms, jewelry & gold farmer Brun’s son. We carried his body back to his father who was devastated & fearful that he’d lose his farm. We gave him 100 gold to help him & take the fear of losing his farm to take some of his burden during this hard time.

After that we had to go to High Hedge to try & identify two potions we found w/Thalantyr. Even though I know what they are I like to be sure but unfortunately Thalantyr couldn’t say for sure. While there, we killed three skeletons & Brown Bear.

Treasure of Note: (Purse = 8,318 gold) Gems: Mithril Ring, Fire Opal Ring, etc.; Scrolls: Blur, Invisibility, etc.; Flail +1 (Minsc);

Current Disposition: Resting @ the FAI after selling loot, resupplying & enjoying a Warriors Feast.

Next Steps:  Finish reconnaissance in force @ Wyrm’s Crossing onward to the Farmlands & then to Ulgoth’s Beard.

Level Up: None

Two more attempts for Blaggerd. The first ends in failure after the cursed berserking sword almost clears the basilisk map. Kirian and her party prove too much for a lowish set of hit point rolls (43 at level 6) and Blaggerd is down to 15hp by the time he is in sword reach. He'll be vaguely remembered for smashing up the Tamah statue and becoming despised after killing Dushai.

2nd time around Blaggerd has much better hit points and softens Kirian's gang up with two necklace of missile blasts. Peter and Baerin perish before battle commences and after the battle 500gp is spent on removal of the sword. A potion of clarity helps with sirines while 2 traps in the pirate cave are carefully sprung after 2 of the 3 flesh golems have failed to get past a potion of absorbtion. Lots to do yet.

Occasionally this adventuring life has its rewards & I don’t refer to treasures. We passed thru Wyrm’s Crossing where we killed another Ankheg before continuing on through the Farmlands on the Way to Ulgoth’s Beard. While in the Farmlands we destroyed an infestation of Zombies, 20 of them, that were threatening the farmers & their families. Very gratifying.

Key Event: Just helping the farm families to be safe to tend their crops.

HELPING THE FARMERS

I find that Branwen & I have grown closer than warriors should be. That worries me because I’ve already seen two friends die, Dynahier & Jaheira, & those closest to them suffer, Minsc & Khalid respectively.  If I lose Branwen I may never forgive myself & lose my edge. I admire the warrior spirit in her & would not interfere w/her regardless of my feelings but, Ugh!

Treasure of Note: (Purse = 1,321 gold – purchased three Raise Dead Scrolls & four Potions of Mirrored Eyes); Gave the set of Plate of the Dark, Full Plate +1 to Branwen

Current Disposition: Rested in the two rooms available @ the Ulgoth’s Beard Inn. We were hit up quickly, not once but twice, to travel to Durlag’s Tower. So be it. Moved back to Nashkel for the time being while we assault Durlag’s Tower.

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (update 4)

Fin disarmed the web traps in the second Cloakwood area, but still used his own traps to kill the ettercaps.  He took no further action until arriving at the mine.  It again proved quite difficult there to combine enough traps to kill anything and he had to run away several times before Drasus was caught on his own.  A backstab took him to the edge of death during a rage and when that ended he chunked himself.  Genthore was easy enough, but Rezdan seemed near impossible - even 7 stacked traps did no damage to him through mirrors and stoneskins and cause affliction was similarly impotent (the other revised Bhaal powers are decent, but that one is a pathetic replacement for horror). I eventually lost patience and stayed in attacking him with arrows after his traps were spent - Fin was twice confused and spooked as well, but successfully saved against 4 dire charms / charm persons before finally shooting the mage down while still confused.  Kysus was then more obliging - using shadow door rather than mirror image and falling victim to 7 stacked traps.

Fin then worked his way down the mine to Davaeorn.  That was again hard going, with even the basic guards being difficult to hit and I decided that he would need considerably better equipment and abilities before having a realistic chance against Davaeorn and his guards.

As a first stage in that he went to the ankheg nest - laboriously setting a full days traps to catch each ankheg (many of them needing finishing off in melee as well).  He then did a series of reputation tasks to boost that up to 20, as well as sneaking past the sirines and golems to raid the pirate treasure.

At Ulgoth's Beard he was able to buy the ring of invisibility and Greenstone Amulet and topped that off by trapping Dushai to get his ring of free action.  That caused his reputation to nose-dive back down to 10, but he still had more than enough funds to buy the Claw of Kazgaroth at High Hedge.  He rounded off that phase of play by buying a +1 quarterstaff at Thunderhammer Smithy. Now rather better equipped, he has just returned to the Cloakwood Mine to settle accounts with Davaeorn.

Thanks Blackraven.  I must admit it's felt like very hard work to get him this far, but now that Davaeorn has fallen he should have a decent chance of making plenty more progress (providing I don't lose patience again and start just shooting at more mages ...)

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (update 4)

Arriving at Davaeorn's level, Fin killed the guard and disarmed the traps.  He was then trying to get the battle horrors to chase him, but Davaeorn suddenly appeared (he must start invisible in this installation) and cast his minor sequencer of web and stinking cloud.  Fin used his boots of speed to outpace that, but found the exit blocked by lots of newly arrived guards.  Fortunately he was able to hide behind the partition and then use a protection from magic scroll to avoid spell damage.  He was then able to take advantage of the guard's scripting to shoot arrows at Davaeorn and withdraw to hide again - the guards immediately returning to Davaeorn once Fin was out of sight rather than chasing him (and Davaeorn was surrounded, so could not move).  After quite a while of doing that Davaeorn started to take damage - and responded by using a potion of invisibility.  Fin countered with 3 Necklace blasts which killed many of the guards, but failed to hide after the third of those and took some damage before being able to hide again.  The guards were now running round, which showed that Davaeorn was on the move.  I thought he wouldn't use any spells while the PfM scroll was running, but he was kind enough to use a sunfire here to kill off all but one of his remaining guards (although that doesn't work through PfM, it overcomes MR, which may be why the AI got fooled into trying it).

Davaeorn was still running round, making him difficult to target safely, and Fin was hit twice by MMM.  His scroll then ran out, which made him a sucker for a fireball - fortunately he had another scroll and used that as well :D.  There was then a further period of cat and mouse attacks - when it wasn't entirely clear who was the cat!  The single remaining guard was no problem, but there were still the 2 battle horrors around which Fin had to avoid.  However, he managed to do so and eventually found a fatal shot against Davaeorn without even having had to resort to using his invisibility ring.  After his second scroll ran out he used his second Bhaal healing to regain some HPS before trying stealth attacks on the mustard jelly.  He failed to hide at one point with the jelly nearly dead - which is where his invisibility ring came in handy to set up a finishing backstab on it - regrettably though it wasn't guarding any decent treasure.

Of course making progress also requires getting through the fight at the palace ...

Fin - halfling bounty hunter (5th and final update)

Fin flooded the mine and went to Baldur's Gate.  There he bought some upgraded ammunition for his bow before undertaking the poison quest.  After killing Jalantha taking back the boy's body got Fin his last level.  Marek died in traps, leaving behind the Eagle Bow.

In search of tomes Fin used traps on Ramazith, Drelik, Jardak, Mountain Maulers (getting a +2 ring there), Degrodel and Ragefast before tracking down the intelligence tome in the basement of the Seven Suns.  Further victims included Sunin, Oberon, Desreta & Vay-Ya, Yago and Lobar before Fin made his way to the Iron Throne.  I forgot about Shennara there and was positioning to lay traps when Fin got backstabbed.  He quickly used the invisibility ring before going to rest on the roof.  Putting down traps then allowed him to kill one Shennara outright and badly wound the other to finish in melee.  Now free to place traps where desired he did that and then showed himself.  Only the doppleganger and Diyab were killed outright by that, but Alai and Naaman died in a follow-up fireball.  Some more traps laid and another fireball then just left Zhalimar and he soon died from a couple of backstabs.  That lot had a disappointing haul - only the Shadow Armour being of any possible interest to Fin.

Fin returned to Candlekeep invisibly in order to avoid the ogre magi there and set more traps for the Iron Throne leaders.  A couple of them survived those, but backstabs quickly finished them and Fin took some Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise from Tuth's body.  The only thing worth taking from the tombs was a scroll  of magic protection.  Setting traps for Prat's gang wasn't entirely straight-forward due to the number of failed rests and teleporting phase spiders on awakening.  However, he did it without too many alarms and was rewarded with a full house when the traps finally triggered (note that with many of the trap encounters he's used almost all special traps to allow him to set those in optimum position without alerting the opposition).  Regrettably though his hard work was rewarded with nothing of interest.  On the way out Fin checked out the ogre magi, but they also had nothing of interest (as I expected).

At Durlag's Tower he recovered the wisdom tome and killed a couple of basilisks on the roof to check the hiding place there (I've seen a tome in there several times), but without success.  Both the strength and dexterity tomes would be useful, but I decided Fin had spent long enough looking for those now and he returned to Baldur's Gate.  A full set of traps killed Krystin, but Slythe needed a follow-up arrow to finish him off.  Slythe had a tome - but regrettably just another one of wisdom.

At the palace the ceremony was unaccountably delayed until Fin had finished spreading traps around (as the dopplegangers don't all change at once I didn't want all traps to affect a single one) - the traps killed one and injured another greater doppleganger.  I had been unsure about whether to let Fin stay in the room for fear of the assassin and sure enough he got a nasty backstab in on him.  A potion of invisibility later and he hit again - this time resulting in death.

I loaded the autosave a couple of times to see what would happen if Fin stayed out of the room while the assassin appeared and don't think it would significantly affect the likely outcome - I think without using potions it's likely to be a pretty dodgy fight however it's done.
