I think the last time I have done bg1 scs was 2 years ago. Since that time, only vanilla bg1ee. But, guys. We got this :D

The Weidu Log of Bg1 EE.

Spoiler

The party is custom made. Playing on core rules difficulty.

Cecil, the half-elven blade. Leader of the pack.
Exalted, the human Inquisitor.
Dwarven Maiden, the dwarven bounty hunter.
Grey Fortress, the dwarven Dwarven Defender.

I changed the difficulty to core after creating the characters, so they recieved maximum hps on their 1st level, but from now on they level up in nwn-like fashion. In case anyone is not familiar with dwarven defender class. It is a fighter kit brought to BG by EE. Here is a link to a playithardcore page with a kit description: http://playithardcor...r_.28Fighter.29

Let us see how the Cecil's team will fare against the hardships of BG1. I intend to solo Cecil in BG2, if he survives a no-reload run of bg1.

@Grond0: A group of assassins, eh? Wow, talk about the micro-management required - making 6 guys run at same time to kite, trying to get 6 different assassins stealthed, keep track of who succeeded and not, etc. Best of luck though, sounds like an interesting group.

You're not wrong about the micro-management needed - that's referred to below ;).  I don't know if I'll have the patience to nurse them through a long run, but we'll see.

Assassins' Creed (update 2)

After restraining themselves in Candlekeep, the Creed were eager for blood and Imoen provided a quick answer - along with Xzar and Montaron.  In Beregost they tried a concerted poison attack on Firebead, but only one of them hit.  The mage was clearly going to survive the poison so they ran away for now while he was busy buffing.

After causing a bit more mayhem in Beregost they moved down to Nashkel and sought out more mages to have a go at - though they took a reputation hit for this one.  Zordral caused no such problem and resulted in the first level ups for the group.

A bit more work, including a first necklace fireball on one of the huge spawns of kobolds, saw Meilum shot down - he provided the groups first magic weapon (+1 long sword).  On to the basilisk area where Spokes soloed the separated basilisks before Korax helped provide a distraction while Mutamin was poisoned, though he still produced some summons who almost killed Spokes before she could deal with the last of the basilisks.

With no healing ability (they're not using potions at the moment) the Creed returned to Beregost to rest.  While there they decided to have another go at Firebead, though that proved very tricky when he disappeared by script while a couple of backstabs were being aimed at him.  He left his house and tracked down the remaining 4 of the party in a nearby house and there was some hasty running in and out before they managed to lose him.  Once his buffs had died down the backstabbers had another go, but stoneskins now foiled poison attempts.  X-ray, who had the best stealth, took her life in her hands by trying to stealth-shoot Firebead while he was running around Beregost randomly and there was a nasty moment when he dived into a different house where 4 of the others were sheltering and started casting sunfire - they got out just in time.  That attempt proved Firebead's doom though as he remained inside and X-ray was now able to pop in and out of the house and kill him using stealth-shots - leaving before Firebead could get a good enough look at her to follow.

Back at the basilisk area a hail of poisoned missiles accounted for Kirian.  A couple of pre-set traps were then sufficient to finish off both Baerin and Peter, leaving Lindin helpless to get to grips with his enemies.

A period of hard work then ensued as the group made their way through the Cloakwood.  Their vulnerability in melee and the large number of spawns meant a lot of micro-management has been needed to avoid any deaths.  Even so, without any healing the group was looking fairly battered once they returned from the Gnoll Stronghold and I did lose patience at one point and resorted to a second use of the Necklace.  They've had very little luck from the randomiser so far - they've all got +1 weapons, but no other useful random drops.  X-ray got a bit caught out when she thought she'd found some +1 armour - I was forgetting that cursed items were disguised in this installation and she's therefore currently dressed in missile attraction armour .

Haha, playing without sound becomes Rhapsody's downfall as a Sirine casts a Charm spell without me noticing it was even in vision!

Diary of Ica’LymeQuain

Beat Tazok easily as well as those in the tent.

Those outside had a concerted attack on me, but two blasts of the wand of frost followed by the wand of fire centred on myself weakened them enough to defeat them.

However the Dark Side Good guys at the FAi proved to be too powerful and I... Argh!

Could have blasted them from where they couldn't see me, but felt that was too cheesy.

Must find another tactic. (Having other party members?)

Next Try a drow ranger trying to emulate Dritzz Do'Urden and actually called that.

Got an excellent roll, my best ever for a pure ranger.

Str 18/54 Dex 19, Con 17, Int 19, Wis 16, Cha 9

Kit Arcane ** Scimitar *** Dual wielding. * Flail.

How come Dritzz has ***** in scimitars?

I also wonder why Dritzz specialises in scimitars. Many of the drow seem to. Is there a a reason for this?

I would have expected long swords since they are elves.

Try reading the books by RA Salvatore for a full explanation.  Alternatively you could get a quick flavour from:

The Colorful Company. Update No.1

The group did minor quests around FAI, Beregost. And man, those random encounters. These guys just gun for my main character not caring anything for damage others heros are dishing out. Something is terribly wrong with the ai there I think. From the no-reload perspective it is very dangerous, but with reloads? My guess is it is not. Every random encounter I just ran from. So far stopped at Nashkel Mines.

My first run through with Dritzz ended in Candlekeep due to the assassins being upgraded (By me).

Assassin was first to fall, Dritzz two seconds later. Thought he had survived just!

Started another run through only this time changed proficiencies. ** Long Swords, *** Dual wielding, * Scimitars.

If he gets to level 3, he will get a further * in Scimitars. After that Longbows perhaps.

He has got back to the site of the ambush after arranging for the burial of Gorion.

I take it that Drizzt in the Dritzz saga is a cheat or at least his creator is. Probably made him as a fighter and then used SK to make him a ranger.

Either that or made a ranger and then used SK to change proficiencies.

Either SK or Nearinfinity.

So that's why you don't use potions?

It's quite a while since I read the books and I don't think I had that in mind.  Still Drizzt wouldn't be a bad role model to have :D.

I take it that Drizzt in the Dritzz saga is a cheat or at least his creator is.

There's not an exact parallel, but in the books you could think of Drizzt as being trained as a fighter - gaining weapon mastery as a result - before dualling to ranger later in life.

Elowyn has successfully turned some basilisks (and a crazy mage herding them) into pincushions. I suppose its time to introduce her:

@Grond0: Good luck with the Creed! What an entertaining run so far. I'm feeling sorry for Imoen and Firebead right now, and I'm expecting that the Flaming Fist might have something to say about your playing style here, but.... its awesome. Here's to the bloody mess you'll spread across Faerun!

@Alaestr: Here's to the Colorful Company! I'm sure you'll find the game much more fun to play with SCS installed. Calls for help alone make things way more interesting. Good luck!

@Grimwald: Here's to dying in Candlekeep! (and to admitting it!) Good luck with your next incarnation of Drizzt.

Assassins' Creed (update 3)

After successfully clearing the Cloudpeaks I decided to try and make the lack of healing slightly less of an issue by getting the constitution tome from the pirate treasure (to give Finder natural regeneration).  Finder's stealth is pretty poor, but he dared to sneak past the sirines and into the cave where he disarmed the traps and grabbed the treasure.  He then ran out out past Sil, getting out of sight before they could target him with a charm, though he did have to save against an arrow of biting.  He was lucky that he successfully stealthed while on the run, to allow him to get past the other sirines.

Back in Beregost a fairly rare use of traps accounted for Silke, while Spokes showed off his pickpocket skill by relieving the traders of a potion each before they could walk away.  Then the road between Beregost and Nashkel was cleared, picking up a ring from Lord Foreshadow there.  There was one problem when they tried to rest and were interrupted by a large bunch of kobolds and decided to run away.  Re-entering the area elsewhere I thought it was reasonably safe to melee a vampiric wolf on the grounds it wouldn't have time to kill a paralysed victim.  However, the previously spawned kobolds obviously had a follow-me script on and turned up in numbers while Finder was paralysed - meaning the Creed couldn't just run and shoot as they would normally have done.  I would have used the Necklace there, but Finder was the one wearing that.  However, they all survived with a bit to spare anyway.

The area to the West of the Nashkel road produced a bonus when Teyngan handed over the Shield Amulet.  In Bassilus' area there was a third use of the Necklace when Finder was badly injured by 2 quick criticals before the mad cleric failed to get out of a poisonous circle.  His luck ran out though at High Hedge when I was just a fraction careless in a routine encounter with some bears - Finder turned to run an instant too late and a critical paw made him the first casualty.  Without the incentive of protecting no deaths I was even more careless shortly afterwards.  Finder took 2 criticals running towards some bandits; everyone used poison weapon in response and I thought all of the bandits had been successfully distracted or killed so didn't move him away.  However, the final one was still targeting Finder and killed him just before dying.

Moving north the Creed successfully emptied the ankheg nest.  Essentially the tactics there were for Finder to attack in melee while the others targeted with missiles.  As soon as an ankheg switched to a melee attack Finder would retreat - the others would then continue firing at the ankheg while it was underground . They've just been to Ulgoth's Beard and bought the Greenstone Amulet.

Individual progress is as follows:
Genghis, assassin 6, 37 HPs, 112 kills,
Finder, assassin 6, 32 HPs, 115 kills, 2 deaths
X-ray, assassin 6, 32 HPs, 135 kills, 0 deaths
Spokes, assassin 6, 33 HPs, 218 kills, 0 deaths
Know-all, assassin 6, 33 HPs, 170 kills, 0 deaths
Rifles, assassin 6, 32 HPs, 88 kills, 0 deaths
Average HPs for all of them are 35.5, so they're generally a bit below average - though at least it's Genghis that's the exception.  With critical hits from arrows tending to be in the 12-16 range they're all pretty vulnerable, though on the relatively rare occasions they all use poisoned weapons opponents don't last long .

Assassins' Creed (3rd and final update)

Things had been going pretty well, with Genghis never really being in any danger.  However, some friendly fire eventually brought a premature end to the run.

Deciding it was time to attempt the Nashkel mine the Creed journeyed south again - surviving a bandit ambush on the way.  The kobolds were dealt with without trouble other than one critical, which made finishing off the kobold chieftain a bit nervous for Finder.  Mulahey's reinforcements all walked into traps and, though all initial attacks on him missed, his attempted spell was interrupted by Genghis's drain life and he didn't manage a second attempt.  Mulahey had a staff +1 on him, though surprisingly none of the assassins has that proficiency at the moment.

Resting gave Genghis a healing touch Bhaal ability, which made managing damage slightly less of a concern.  In the area outside I mistook which character a ghast was attacking - resulting in Spokes being paralysed and almost finished off before the ghast could be eliminated.  They were guarding a +1 short bow in their tomb, which was a welcome addition to the party's equipment.  While clearing the area they were also ambushed by Lamalha's amazons, but fortunately everyone was freshly rested at the time and poisoned weapons were able to finish the opponents off quickly.  X-ray took a dart of wounding during the fight, but a healing touch kept her alive and there would have been time to rest or leave the map if necessary (but the poison stopped in time anyway).  The revenant proved to be highly resistant to traps and immune to poison, but a combined assault still succeeded without quite incurring any casualties.

Before going back to Nashkel the Creed cleared Samuel's area and took him back to the FAI.  That delay could have been costly when I forgot that Nimbul would be waiting in Nashkel, but a couple of criticals in the first volley of missiles were enough to kill him before he buffed.

Doing a bit of tidying up X-ray incurred the 3rd party death when a slight pathfinding glitch meant she was leading instead of Finder when the party came across a group of kobold commandos.  I was about to leave the area, but there was no point as she died in their initial volley.  I then forgot to pick up her equipment (including the Necklace of Missiles), but fortunately the trip to Nashkel temple was quite short and it was still there when the group hurried back.  There was also a difficult fight there when two large groups of skeletons combined to attack and X-ray used a fourth charge from the Necklace to relieve the pressure a bit.

Back at the lighthouse area Sil and her sirines had the follow-me script, which made sneaking up on them pretty impossible.  To try and use that cheesy tactic against them the group came in at one point on the map and waited for them to arrive before leaving and coming in at another.  That gave them time to set traps - which proved effective despite 2 of the group being charmed.  I think the traps must have triggered just before the charm took effect as there was no damage done to those charrmed.  However, at least one trap was not triggered by the sirines and I hadn't realised that the golems also had the follow-me script and one of them approaching triggered that - killing the golem, but Finder as well. It was probably fortunate that it was Genghis' trap - I suspect that saved him from also being affected by it as he was next to Finder.  Luckily nothing else approached until Genghis had recovered and it wasn't long before the party was restored at the temple and back again.  They soon found another golem looking for them, which also died in traps.  More pre-set traps were then put out and X-ray used a stealth shot to lure the remaining group of 3 sirines into those.  Two of them died and the last one still following should have been another trap victim.  However, a slight pathfinding problem meant that it came in sight of the Creed just before they had all moved away from the traps.  It immediately used a charming song and once more Genghis' dwarven saving throws failed to protect him (he really should have been wearing the Greenstone Amulet, which in this installation provides protection while equipped).  This time Genghis had no escape from the traps just laid.

@Grimwald: Here's to dying in Candlekeep! (and to admitting it!) Good luck with your next incarnation of Drizzt.

I didn't like the fact that the assassins at Candlekeep were so easy and weren't worth the effort of fighting, so I used SK to give them slightly better weapons and armour. One set being Shadow Armour and the other great for an evil thief (only useable by evil characters). +2 weapons also made them both quite hard and also worth killing.

It would be nice if someone made an improved Candlekeep mod, but as they haven't, I did it for myself. It's not Weidu though, so while people can use my idea, it means that they have to make their changes after installing their mods. (Dark Horizons over-rides any changes you make for instance) I tried to improve them by changing their stats but for some reason, it made the game crash.

I like to keep life interesting - who needs enemies with friends like these?

I must admit I hadn't realised the danger of self-harming traps before the first incident with the golem, but after that I should have been more careful.  I haven't tested it, but my impression is that the charmed characters were not actually triggering the traps, but just becoming valid targets once they had triggered.  I haven't deleted the starting save for the assassins, so I might have another go at some point to test things a bit further (though not doing the same quantity of clearing low value spawns as this time).

The Colorful Company. Update No.2

I started to recall why I hate playing parties - the pathing algorithms in bg are atrocious and make me pull my hair from my head. Arrgh.

So far cleared Mines and done some more minor tasks around Beregost. I follow dudleyvilles guide, so there is no ingenuity to my playthrough. SCS does not make things harder (except the vampiris wolf in ruins, I skipped that fight so far). I had two rounds with Bassilus, first time he killed two of my characters, I resurrected them in a temple, than just one. I don't know if Aerial Servant is supposed to do 30 damage in one hit with some crazy thac0? Second time I manged to interrupt his conjuration spell, so it was all good (except giant pillar of fire). Playing with party is so safe! Just keep your main character off screen and fight with rest of the group. No holds, no charms, no insta death invokation spell can touch you. I love it.  Minus the pathing part. I use the overpowered necklace of fireballs (only 5k to recharge!) to quickly clear dungeons and wand of sleep to crowd control (2k for recharge!). So far, so good.

More interesting finds: .Khark dies

Bandits die. A fireball wand and necklace of fireballs used with a great effect.

Cloakwood's Mine level 3 mage Unfortunately had to backtrack to temple after getting two characters killed on the level 4 (the female mage there double fireballed 3 of my guys).

Dinner break.

Dritzz seems to be having nothing but problems.

!st incarnation died in candlekeep.

2nd incarnation survived and went to Nashkel and back to Beregost on the way picking up a pair of decent bracers, Lord Foreshadow's Ring, the ability to heal and some experience.

In Beregost he tried to charm Algernon when he was being chased by spiders. Algernon saved so Dritzz had to run and find somewhere where he could sleep in order to have another try. In all it took FOUR attempts. Not only that he got poisoned twice and as a result nearly died twice. Upon leaving the Inn his way was blocked by the Innkeeper amongst others and a number of spiders. had to go in and out several times before escaping.

Upon finally getting the cloak, he went to the FAI where he charmed a caravan guard.

He left the two of them to fight it out.

The guard won and so he was taken to help fight the hobgoblins. The guard killed all but one before being killed himself!

He was wearing mithril chain +4. Great for a ranger I thought: In the information about the arcane ranger there is no mention of armour restrictions.

Arcane.jpg

From this it can be seen that the Arcane Ranger is basically a melee fighter with extra resistances and extra spells, but without the ability to get more than ** in weapon proficiencies and only ** in weapon wielding styles.

Drizzt then headed south of Beregost where he charmed 2 ogrillon and a Flaming Fist Mercenary before meeting up with Tristan and Isolde.

Drizzt survived unlike some of his allies. The surviving allies helped against some undead but eventually fell themselves.

He then searched the bodies of the assassins Tristan and Isolde and found some chain mail +1. he could wear that, so how come that he couldn't wear mithril chain??

EDIT

There doesn't seem to be any logic, I have gained some plate armour AC 1 and can wear that with no problem, so what is it with the mithril chain?

Not much chance of that with this modded installation, but I'll see if I can manage a BG1 success at least :).

Bards' Lament (update 1)

After the assassins proved true to their nature by assassinating their leader I thought I would have one more go at a run with a full party of one class.  I again randomly generated the class, but turned down the first couple of selections of monks or rangers before accepting bards as offering some interesting options.

The party got their first levels in the basilisk area, but I felt they were not up to attempting Mutamin yet - given that none of them knew any offensive spells at the time.  I deliberately created them with low intelligence (with one exception), so they will be failing to learn rather a lot in this run ...

Back at High Hedge a couple of them learnt sleep to make low level spawns a lot easier.  They then tried to get a skeleton skull, which led to the first death of the run when I was experimenting with Martial tanking the skeletons while all the others sang (to reduce damage taken).  That seemed to be working OK until Martial a bit mysteriously found he was no longer protected by the song (even though he was still quite close to the others).  He tried to run away out of range, but was cut down before he got to safety.

After scraping together the funds to raise Martial the party continued their work looking to enhance reputation.  Other encounters were also done where there was a chance of treasure and killing Sendai produced a nice bonus with the boots of speed.  After getting to reputation 20 they went to High Hedge to expand the very sparse number of spells known so far - with intelligence so low many of the scrolls were wasted, but everyone now knows at least something decent.  The bit of XP for learning spells also tipped them all over to level 5.

Stats:
Soulful, bard 5, 27 HPs, 45 kills,
