Baldur's Gate 1 No-Reload Challenge

There is no preview reply function (or I just can't find it), so I hope this doesn't look stupid.
~~~~
I posted my last BG1 no reload attempt a few years back. For anyone who recalls, my no reload ended with me accidentally using a Cursed Scroll of Petrification on my PC (sorcerer), mistaking it for something else (prepping for the final battle with sarevok....) I was so annoyed.
~~~~~
So I'm attempting to do a no reload of the entire trilogy. I'll be using appropriate patches/fixpacks in addition to BGTUTU(for bg1). I'm only going to post as I beat games (BG1+Totsc/BG2/ToB), or up til I fail. I've never completed a no reload, so I'm looking for a no-reload that can be done with a decent margin of error. My posts will be more like a battle report than a story (besides old school RPGs, my video game of choice is RTS so that's naturally how I look at video game) I don't know BG1 as well as I know BG2, so traps kicked my butt numerous times.
Since I've never no reloaded a BG game before, I'll be min/maxing to the max, but I'll be making my best effort to legitimately role play every scenario. I recently completed BG1 with SCS (tactical/difficulty mod), so I have a good feeling about this attempt.
Anyways I hope this doesn't come off as long winded or unreadable since the entire account is in one post.
I chose the archer because
An archer is generally far away from combat and very unlikely to die even if a battle is lost. I can run away and stealth or use an invis potion if I lose a fight.[/list]
An archer breezes through all of BG1 and maybe the first half of BG2. Edwin/jan/jaheira are powerful NPCs that can easily make the rest of the game as easy as the first half.[/list]
I ended up with a ridiculous roll of
18/65 str
19 dex
17 con
15 int
14 wis
18 cha
for my Lawful Good Elf Archer [Juliet]
Prologue:
Did all the side quests without incident. The only noteworthy thing I did was to grab the potion of speed from the party tutorial to make the rest of the prologue quick. Purchased composite longbow/arrows/studded leather armor and left.
Chapter 1~3
Picked up Imoen as my thief. Picked up Xzar/Montaron to help kill Tarnesh. Went to friendly arm inn. Picked up Khalid as my tank and Jaheira as my healer. Grabbed the golden pantaloons, and the ogre/beregost/ring side quests. “Randomly” came across the ring of wizardry oh my god how fortuitous! Killed the hobgoblins for the flamedance ring side quest. Went south of friendly army inn and killed the ogre.
Xzar/montaron died bravely to a group of xvarts on the way south. They were removed from my party. Went to beregost and headed west to get Kivan as a temporary archer. Killed the spiders in the beregost home and returned those items. Avoided the Silke and the dwarf bounty hunter for now. Proceeded south to Nashkel. Grabbed Edwin as my wizard. Killed neira and rested.
Travelled to the Gnoll Stronghold and cleared it out without incident. Tome of charisma went to Juliet the charming archer [19 cha]. Gauntlets of Dexterity to Khalid (now a viable tank). I let Edwin kill Dynaheir by himself. I always feel guilty letting a Lawful Good led party kill an innocent lady. Tricky to role play this.
Traveled to the Nashkel. LUCKILY found Khalid some ankheg armor in the farm (almost like cheating isn't it) Cast remove fear and killed the psycho wizard. Killed the exploding ogre. Went south to the outside of the mines. Went to find Prism. Greywolf was no challenge after Edwin blinded him. Varscona to Khalid! The first two levels of the mines were without incident. However, Khalid at the end of the third level and forced us to go back and revive him. We came back and went to the fourth level, cleared it and went in. Oil of speeds on Khalid and Juliet. Moved quickly towards Mulahey. Mulahey was blinded in the first round and became a non-threat. His minions were sort of threatening but Jaheiras cure light wounds kept them from being fatal. Mulaheys surrender was refused and quickly killed.
Back to Nashkel! I don't remember the bounty hunters name but he got a confusion type spell off but Juliet dodged it and stayed hidden while the amnish guards took care of him. Boots of (-5 ac vs missiles) went to Khalid. To Beregost! Tranzig didn't even get a spell off. Headed east to the temple. The two vampiric wolves were hard, we killed one but the other stunned khalid and killed him, had to resurrect him and rest before killing the other. Traveled even more east to the basilisk area. Grabbed Korax and only used stealth Juliet[Archer]. The psycho wizard was quickly stunned and killed, all the basilisks stupidly focused on Korax while Juliet proceeded to acquire insane XP for the party. I ignored the party because I wasn't sure what was in their arsenal (and I had limited protection).
After clearing the basilisk area, I went back to High Hedge and did his little chicken quest (went south to get melicamp, killed a skeleton for a skull, and Thalantyr anti-chicken spell failed). Headed down to the lighthouse. I was a bit afraid of Sirines but I came up with a plan. I used Edwin to blind Khalid (so he wouldn't move after being charmed) and used Juliet to hit and run the sirines to death. None of them ended up being a problem. I used dropped arrows of biting to handle the golems in the cave. Tome of constitution went to Juliet the hardy archer. I avoided the quest where you save the kid from worgs but I think it gave rep and I didn't need extra rep with Edwin in my party.
I went south of high hedge to take out Bassilus. All attempts to blind him failed and he ended up holding both Jaheira and Khalid. I also forgot the correct dialogue tree to get all the skeletons to die so I had to fight them too. I used imoen and her wand of magic missiles to keep bassilus from casting too much. Juliet the charming/hardy archer had to use the last oil of speed I had to kill everything quickly before Jaheira/Khalid died (which they didn't). Turned in the bassilus quest and looked for Brage. No combat there. Time to go to the bandits camp.
Went to Peldvale, saved viconia (didn't keep her), and found the recruiter. Went to the camp as “bandit recruits”, roughened Tazok up a bit and went to the main tent. I was a little worried about this one but it wasn't so bad. I took out the wizard before he could cast anything. Cast horror and pretty much feared everyone dangerous, proceeded to blind everyone. Barely took any damage here. Disarmed the traps and entered Chapter 5, party being around lvl 4-5.
Chapter 4
Trek through cloakwood wasn't completely without incident. First area was simple, killed the druids and went to area #2. Area #2 is filled with web traps and creatures immune to web, I'm well aware, yet still lost NPCs to it. Had to go ALL the way back to a temple and ALL the way back (not that it takes long, but a lot of in game days are wasted going through this forest)
The fat lady was fairly easy, plenty of antidotes/healing potions and 2 horrors handled it well enough. Skipped ahead to the area with the wyvern cave and cleared it out. I tried to rest there but wyverns spawned on me like 5 times in a row, so I slept outside, (my intention wasn't to get easy xp, but I figured it was “safer” to sleep in an empty cave than out in the dangerous cloakwood forest). Anyways,
Drasus party was somewhat worrisome but I ended up having no problem with it. I spread out, sent Juliet the hardy/charming archer away from the rest of the party because I knew they were equipped with confusion type spells. I opened with a horror and Juliet focusing on the mages. Drasus and the other fighter spent their time chasing Imoen around until Edwin blinded them and they became non threats. The mages were unable to get any spells off with Kivan/Juliet on top of them. The rest of the party was quickly dispatched. Boots of speed to Juliet the charming/hardy archer. First level of the mines were without incident. The second level was ok. I wanted to clear the main room with the wizard/1000 bandits with a fireball, but edwin ended up dying... so I had to go ALLLLL the way back to a temple and ALLL the way back.
Kivan died
Chapter 5
Left cloakwood with +2 rep (holy crap edwins going to leave if I gain one more rep!!!). I went to beregost and let Imoen go on a burglarly spree. Sadly she wasn't much of a burglar so she got caught a ridiculous number of times (effectively lowering my rep to Edwin-tolerable levels). North to the ankheg farm! Killed about 30 of them and took the fishermans quest. I didn't kill Tenya but instead I turned on them (I didn't kill them though I just went back north). Crossed the bridge into Baldur's gate, went to Sorcerous sundries and picked up some sweet arrows (dispelling, detonation mostly). Went upstairs and got into a fight with some weak mages.
Completed Scars first quest easily (the dopplegangers). Completed Scars second quest easily (the ogre mage in the sewers). The final quest (top floor of the iron throne) I wasn't too worried about. That's what I picked up arrows of detonation for. I hasted, sent Juliet up and detonated the party to smithereens (Jaheira ended up getting blown up but the fight was still simple). Went to resurrect Jaheira. Sneaked into the thieves guild for kicks (omg found a dexterity tome!!!!). +1 dexterity to Juliet the charming/hardy/deft archer. To chapter 6/Candlekeep!
Chapter 6
At candlekeep we went to winthrop to clear out the inventory and pick up some arrows. Climbed the library, and took koveras's ring. Goaded the iron throne leaders into attacking us and easily beat them with a hold spell/blind. Too bad we got arrested. To the crypts! After being teleported to the crypts, we went straight for the room with the tome of wisdom. However, Imoen died to a trap. Luckily I had a potion of strength so I was able to bash the lock in and the tome of wisdom went to Juliet the hardy/charming/deft/astute archer. Sadly with Imoen dead, I didn't feel it was worth going after the tome of strength, especially since it doesn't really do anything for my archer. The greater doppelganger encounter was straightforward. I sent Khalid in and Yeslick hit him with a dispel magic (love that innate ability). Quickly dispatched!
The Prat encounter was fairly dangerous, as my entire party (except the PC) was at critical levels. I scouted ahead with stealth archer, placed archer northeast. Yeslick spawned some skeletons to tank, edwin tossed in a fireball, archer sniped casters from northeast position (to avoid any confusion spell that may hit the rest of my party). After the fireball, Edwin proceeded to blind anyone he could reach. After Prat, the spiders were fairly easy. The two greater basilisks were tough, not especially because of their powerful gaze, but because I didn't have any active ability to protect myself from them, so I had to rest. Sadly I rested in a cramped spot so when our rest was disturbed by a phase spider, it was too difficult to maintain distance. It hit Juliet the astute/hardy/charming/deft archer and (phase spiders poison is 5 dmg a tick, ridiculously dangerous). I hit the antidote in time sure, but the spider hit me again right after. I was pounding that second antidote like a mad man, I thought this was it. But I made it with 1 hp. Close. This time I rested while in stealth mode. Anyways the basilisks were quickly taken care of by Yeslick's skeletons. Everyone is about lvl 6/5 at this point.
Chapter 7
So we headed to Baldur's Gate to do some minor sidequests. First we did the Tenya/dead kid/tymora quest. Not bloody, very straightforward. Ramaziths quest was also simple. I released the nymph and went into Ramaziths tower. Amusingly, Ramazith killed himself with his own lightning bolt.... but I still lost Imoen to jelly on the way up (UGH). At the top floor the tome of intelligence went directly to Juliet the charming/hardy/deft/astute/shrewd archer.
Next we went to the Low Lantern and killed some psychos (wand of paralysis made this fight a joke). Gauntlets of 18/00 strength went directly to Yeslick. Yeslick also has a hammer+2, I have no idea where it came from though. Next up was a quick stay at the blushing mermaid, but oh my god there's an ogre waiting to kill me. One blind and he was no match for imoen (jk my entire party) in hand to hand combat.
Then we got arrested. But since Juliet was so smart, psycho nebs riddle was simple. Whenever we encountered flaming fist officers in the streets of baldur's gate, we'd just blind them and continue on. We received word that Duke Eltan was being poisoned in the flaming fist quarters, so Juliet snuck in and killed the doppelganger with some simple hit/run/stealth/run/rinse repeat action. Eltan was then escorted to the harbor master.
Someone told us to check out the top floor of the iron throne. So we did that. The lady caster was easy. Haste+Arrows of dispelling=dead wizard and dead wizard friends. Diary of sarevok was in our posession.
Picked up Helm of Balduran in the helm/star tavern. The fight vs. the evil party was pretty easy with the good partys help.
Went to the house in northern baldur's gate (with the battle horrors/invisible stalkers/etc). This was a long and perhaps the most difficult fight in the game. First, I went in without preparation. Second, I had exhaust every single spell I had, almost all my arrows. And a ton of wand of paralysis charges. Summons held these things off for a decent amount of time. Not one blind was successful. Eventually the first group of high level monsters were taken out. The wizard was a problem because I wasn't into his deal. My party wasn't in there so we couldn't just eliminate him instantly. We had to use all the charges of the wand of monster summoning, but eventually the battle was won and an insane amount of exp was acquired.
To the undercellars! Slythe/Kristin was dealt with by summoning monsters/skeletons in their face followed by a quick dispel-->haste. Slythe went down quick but Kristin was tougher. Arrows of dispelling were required to take her out without worry. Short Sword of backstabbing went to imoen (although she rarely uses melee weapons). There was an invitation, and it looked as if the ceremony wasn't for another 5 weeks, looks like we have some time to kill. To Ulgoths beard!!
Tales of the Sword Coast
Shandalar pounced on us and sent us to Ice Island. Initial Polar bear/winter wolves weren't worth writing about. The first wizard party worried me, and I kind of screwed it up. Juliet scouted ahead and it looked as if there were some nasty wizards. So I summoned some protection (skeletons), and they wandered in their line of sight and blasted them and started teleporting around/tossing fireballs. Haste/Dispelling arrows were able to hold them off for a bit, but they ended up landing a confusion type spell that hit half my party (jaheira/yeslick/khalid). So I switched to detonation arrows to try and end this before anything else happened. Which worked fine.
The ankheg wizard was problematic. We didn't really focus fire well and ended up losing both Jaheira and Yeslick (my healers...) luckily I have a fair amount of potions. Anyways, the next wizard was dealt with by arrows of dispelling/haste... as was the next+last wizard. I hate to say it but arrows of dispelling make this particular dungeon ridiculously trivial.
Next up was Mendas' little problem. First we bought a ton of +1 arrows just in case. We went to get sea charts. Since we didn't want to travel the planet, we just went in bloody and retrieved them and went to the island. Once their, we took on all the sidequests and went on up the northern end of the island. The wolfweres weren't really troublesome. The sirine queen really worried me so I took the peaceful route on that. After handing in everyones little sidequest, we went up the ship. It was pretty straightfoward, haste/+1 arrows/khalid+yeslick/jaheiras heals made the trek to the greater wolfwere easy. The greater wolfwere himself was also easy, we charged the wizard wolf hard at first, then we had edwin use wand of paralysis on the greater wolf (lol). Then we picked up the sword of balduran so khalid could slowly kill it. Simple!!!
Back to the village, looks like these people hate us now and they are apparently wolves. So we escaped. Killed every wolf on the way with no trouble and went back to baldur's gate. Mendas and his lackey were easily dispatched with some wand of paralysis action. Another easy sidequest!
Then I thought, why don't I have a full plate for khalid, so I can equip this ring of protection +2? I knew where to get one. I went straight to the bandits camp and murdered everyone there (Taughaoz[sp] tenhammer had one nice!)
Now on to the most difficult portion of the game. To IKE!! Time to journey to Baldurs gate. First of all, I'd like to just mention this now. During the entire durlag journey, our bags were filled to the absolute brim. Not only that, but I lost party members maybe 15 times (thats 15 journeys to the temple of beregost and back, thats 45 doppelgangers). And these deaths happened at the most INCONVENIENT times, not during a difficult battle, but during some ridiculous trap, or some trivial ghoul stun. Battle horrors/doppelganger was easy. Ground floor was trivial. Went on up to kill the basilisks with yeslick, grabbed the scimitar+2 for Jaheira (hardly uses it). Went up to the demon who looks like a nymph lady. Refused to give her another soul to trap. Potion of clarity + oil of speed made it fairly easy, albeit a lengthy fight. She charmed khalid and yeslick but I had edwin blind them to make them non-threats. Eventually she went down and it was time to hit the first level. Oh yeah, I picked up a tome of wisdom that went directly to Juliet the deft/hardy/astute/shrewd/charming/prudent archer.
First level was actually painless, although I did lose some party members to ridiculous traps. Doppelgangers, dispel-->haste. Armored warrior things (doom guards or battle horrors, not sure I remember) were taken out with blind/melee. Skeleton warriors died to straight up archery/melee. After solving the riddles, I used a ton of potions/haste/summons. The fight was a lot easier than I initially thought. Love used skull trap on khalid which killed Fear. Hasted Juliet took out avarice FAST. Pride was surrounded by summons and ended up dying quickly too. Love went down to the full force of my party easily. A lot easier than I figured it would be.
To the second level!!! This is my least favorite level, I honestly can't stand this level. The doppelgangers were all easy, blind took care of them. The only noteworthy event in this level was the dwarf guards right near the exit to level 3. I figured I could take them, I summoned everything I could and hasted. Sadly, they TORE UP my summons and my party. Completely tore them up. All that was remaining was Juliet the deft/charming/hardy/shrewd/astute/prudent archer (who had to use an invis potion to create some distance). She switched to arrows of detonation + oil of speed to eliminate these dangerous gaurds (ONLY WORTH 2000 XP?????). Now remember, I have 5 dead party members, and everyone of them was FILLED TO THE BRIM with gear. I had to stash everything in a treasure chest so they wouldn't disappear. Then I had to travel back to temple of beregost, travel back, and have all my NPCs pick up their gear. It took AGES.
To the third level! The FIRST thing that happened was Imoen died to the stupid fireball, so I had to go back to the temple in beregost, and come back (and deal with treasure chests again). This happened twice more but I won't mention that. Greater Wyverns were actually tough. The free warriors made the first two relatively doable, but they were dead before we finished this series of encounters. They had very good saves, but finally we got a blind off on the last one and was able to move on. The slime room was easy. Arrows of fire-->done. Ice room was just as easy. Kill wolves... kill bear. No one even landed a hit on my party. Air room was tricky. The air element/invisible stalkers required me to use every single spell in my repetoire. Summons... hastes.. wand of heavens. But they went down and I had nothing for the chess game except.. 5 Fiery oil potion things+wand of fire-->entire chess game over. On to the fourth level. This level was fairly painless if u discount the ridiculous deaths that shouldn't have happened. Spiders went down easily. Ghouls. Riddles. There is really nothing dangerous on this level. Nothing to write about... except I did lose some party members when I shouldn't have.
Anyways.. after solving the riddles it was time for the demonknight, who I was kind of scared of. Anyways, I prepped big time for this guy. Potions of invul/speeds/summons(died to fireball right away)/protect fear/etc. However, 1 wand of paralysis from edwin and demonknight wasn't moving. Dead easy. Looks like were done with durlags tower. I picked up the soultaker and went to turn it in. However we got ambushed by these freak cultists (who backstabbed Edwin to death). We cleared the outside and then went to get Edwin back alive. Killed the rest of the cultists fairly easily and prepped for Aec'Letec.
Potions of strenght/oils of speed/potions of invul/potions of mirror eyes (for Juliet/Khalid/Edwin). Went downstairs, first thing I did was focus the hell out of the psycho wizard and she died instantly. Send Edwin/Jaheira/yeslick to the west side of the room and had them start summoning skeletons/monsters/nymphs. Sent Imoen/Juliet to the north end to start working the cultists. Send Khalid to the middle of the room to go head to head with Aec'Letec. Imoen/Juliet(arrows of piercing) took out 4 Cultists in good time. The army of summons took out the others and surrounded Aec'Letec just in time to get Khalid out of there because he was getting ripped apart. Jaheira ended up getting death gazed which was bad news because if she got chucked I was out my best healer. So I had Juliet the deft/hardy/charming/prudent/shrewd/astute archer switch over to dispelling arrows and hit Jaheira with one to save her life. Eventually Aec'Letec went down. Tales of the sword coast done! On to the ceremony.
Final Quest
Went to the ceremony. Yeslicks dispel → hasted party = dead doppelgangers. Chased sarevok through the maze. Nothing noteworthy in the maze, skeleton warriors died to summons/party. The Iron Throne mercenary band died to arrows of detonation (though not before killing Khalid... walking through the maze to resurrect him then walking back was annoying). Tamoko was dealt with peacefully (no blood!). Time for the final battle.
Oils of speed, potions of (cloud giant) strenght, (scrolls of anti lightning/fire/poison on Juliet), and others were used. Summons were created. Juliet went to confront Sarevok. Battle ensued! Arrows of dispelling hit Sarevok. Sarevok was focused. Sarevok was quickly taken down..
This the first time I no reloaded a BG game (I consider BG1 the toughest of the three, the options are so limited and the health is so low). Blind/ranged combat/magic arrow use are of paramount importance Even level 1 Edwin with ring of wizardry/conjurer kit/necklace can blind/sleep/charm a TON in the early game. Get Edwin ASAP and use blind/sleep/charm a lot early, and switch over to mostly blind/magic missiles later. Horror/haste are primary level 2 and level 3 spells. Level 4/5 spells you can just fill with summons if you ask me (or whatever floats your boat I suppose)
Final character – Juliet (charming/astute/shrewd/prudent/deft/hardy) archer [disregard my ridiculously inflated stats]
18/65 strength
20 dexterity
18 constitution
16 intelligence
16 wisdom
19 charisma
Final party [experience values are estimated from memory] Essentially, everyone was max level except Imoen, who died a lot [traps]. Juliet ended up with over 600 kills and about 60% of total experience. Next closest was Khalid with about 15% total experience (not sure exactly). You can deck out Khalid almost immediately. Varscona/Full Plate Mail/Ring of protection/Boots of avoidance/gauntlets of dexterity can all be found before even entering chapter 4. The only thing you are missing is helm of balduran.
Juliet 161,000
Imoen 130,000
Khalid 160,000
Yeslick 80,000/80,000
Jaheira 80,000/80,000
Edwin 150,000
On to Baldur's Gate 2!!

It can be worth the risk, as the rewards are great. Sorry it didn't come off though.
I have been on holiday and forgotten where I got up to with Laicalle. I therefore started again.
He has spent a lot of time travelling up and down the sword coast doing trivia.(Getting a ring for Joia, dealing with Sonner, trying to help Melicamp, getting a sword back for Perdue, getting news, killing Greywolf, helping an archaeologist etc. He joined up with his friends from Candlekeep in the Friendly Arms Inn after killing Tarnesh. They have helped in identifying items but have hardly been used for anything else except that Deder pickpocketed a cloak in Beregost.
That cloak was very useful against Bassilus. He was charmed and set against Zargal et al. Unfortunately some ghasts got in on the battle and he was held and thus died and I was unable to kill him with Lacaille as he was held also!
Well done xler.

However, so long as you are honest about what you have done, I see no problem in re-loading.
If it is important to you, my suggestion is to do that quest early on and restart from the beginning if he dies.

Incidentally, does the "no reload" rule apply to Melicamp, too?
Yes. If you're just picking and choosing when you can reload it's not really a no-reload, is it? The whole point of no-reload is that you have to find ways to deal with all the randomness inherent in the game. (The point being that you can't rely on good luck alone... so you'll have to be prepared and alert and use appropriate tactics when playing.)
If you want to stay in the sprit of no-reloading, the only acceptable times to reload are: 1) if you have encountered a bug, or 2) to continue after saving your progress. In case 1, the severity "required" of the bug may be up for debate, but if in doubt, just ask (or reload and just let people know).

Laicalle is now back in Beregost, solo once again.
Big decision to make. Solo, pick up Imoen, Xzar/Montaron, or wait for Coran to join?
The latter I think as with a reputation of 20, Xzar/Montaron are unlikely to be happy.
Now level 5 fighter, level 5 cleric.
Edit:
On the way to the bandit camp I was ambushed by Zeela, Maneira, Lamalha and Telka. Laicalle was put to sleep and that was the end!

Diary of Warmheart
On doing as much good as possible at Candlekeep, I fled with Gorion only to be ambushed.
I fled back to Candlekeep only to be refused access. I therefore returned, buried Gorion and went as requested to the Friendly Arms. There I was attacked once more but was saved by sanctuary and the guards.
I joined up with my friends in the Training Room and made my way to Beregost. There I parted company with all except Deder.

Elnar
We finish off the bandit camp stragglers, take care of a mad cleric called Bassilus and set off for a hidden mine. After several ambushes in Cloakwood we reach the mine.
Drasus is extremely rude so I tell him we always kill the mouthy one. He falls for our subterfuge, allowing Coran and Kivan to kill Kysus with one arrow each. We swarm Rezdan, overwhelming his mirror images but can't tell whether Imoen or Coran kill him.
Drasus forces Minsc to gulp his only remaining blue potion (bad planning), then makes him run. We all target Drasus, falling to either Coran or myself. Genthore is throwing darts at Minsc so we aim five bows in his direction.
I throw Minsc five blue potions but he cannot catch them (full inventory). He drops a white potion, grabs the blues and readies them only to notice Kivan has killed Genthore.
As we explore the mine we encounter a dwarf called Yeslick. He joins us, taking the lead so the rest of us can use bows. Imoen kills Daveaorn at the base of the mine after using summoned skeletons to overwhelm him. Once the mine is looted and Stephan Re'Cap leaves we unplug the mine.
One the way out of Cloakwood we empty two wyvern caves, a spiders lair and pick a fight with Aldeth Sashenstar after he refuses to talk to us. Imoen helps herself to a cloak too.
Yeslick, 5/5. 23 kills, sword spider.
Minsc, 5. 94 kills, mustard jelly.
Elnar, ranger 5. 187 kills, Taugosz Khosann.
Kivan, ranger 5. 172 kills, sword spider.
Coran, 4/5. 74 kills, Kysus.
Imoen, 6. 36 kills, Davaeorn.

Your game is looking good.
The reason that I didn't use tweaks to deal with romance restrictions, is that I have heard that it doesn't cope with romances introduced by mods. ( I presume that would include Xan because race is so entwined with the mod.)
If I had changed my half elf to an elf, would it have made much difference, either by strengthening or weakening the character?
Welcome to the challenge lroumen. Hope that you enjoy it. It requires a bit more patience (You might have to flee a bit more). However IMO that makes it more realistic. Gung Ho characters come to a sticky end all too soon.
Diary of Warmheart
I headed southwards to try and help in Nashkel, but have been having so many problems dealing with Xvarts, Gibberlings and the like that I decided to try easier quests first!! Yes I'm chicken, but my name is Warmheart, not Braveheart!! Some ambushes by cave bears and ghasts have boosted my confidence somewhat. It took a long time, but I killed them all.
Having recieved Lord Foreshadow's ring, my charisma of 2 no longer seems to matter. I helped Rufie and headed west, bypassing the likes of Vax. He will have to wait. I have now killed some more bears and am feeling a bit safer. In the next area I was swamped by attacking gnolls, 16 I think, plus half a dozen bears. However after dealing with them I got up to level 5. The extra spells make all the difference. Also the sword lasts long enough to just about complete a battle. I helped the Dryad and hope to help a cat soon. Perhaps in the near future I will look for some allies, preferably other elves like myself.

I have done a few solo challenges and a few challenges with highly tactical mods installed but so far a no-reload is still something I must achieve. I hope that my relatively old installation with many tactical mods will not kill me outright at the first encounter
In addition, before I enter BG2 (I expect to accomplish this well enough) I will have to use the tomes in BG1 before my stats are up to par for dual-classing into a druid. It should be fun not playing an overly min/maxed character.

I might, perhaps, start some other challenge first. I just need to think of something innovative.

and some decidedly unsafe places to rest (The cloakwood mines for example.) Make sure that you have plenty of potions before going there! I'm not saying it is easy. You might only get through ToSC once in every four tries for example, always depending on whether you try an easy character or a hard one. If you notice, I nearly always have good stats before trying. Whilst some are ordinary rolls, other times I use the re-roller that Frabjous wrote. It rolls a number of times a second and saves the best, so you can get a decent roll within a minute or two. I would at least give it a try through ToSC. I haven't made it through the trilogy yet, probably because I don't know SoA well enough.
Diary of Warmheart
I took on Greywolf after buffing and was pleased to be able to beat him in melee. Then sorted out some problems in Nashkel, babysitting, kiling a baby wyvern, headed north to FAI, picked up Khaled and Jahiera and then took on a couple of Ankheg. No problem! Helped Melicamp, killed Karlat and helped Perdue. Party looking good!

Core rules (Normal for max HP and learning spells).
So the story begins. BlackStrider finished Candlekeep and after death of his foster father joined with Imoen. Together (and with help of two potions of speed - Imoen's and Montaron's) they cleared first map. Then they headed to Beregost, calmed Marl, fetch book for Firebead Elvenhair, deliver letter for Mirianne, picked wand of lightning from manson, and cleared Landrin's house from spiders. On a way to FAI they killed some gibberlings, xvarts, wolfs and rogue Ogre. In FAI they fetch Joia's Flamedance Ring and ring of wizardry. At the moment BlackStrider was lvl2 and Imoen lvl3 so they were quite ready to meet Tarnesh. Imoen lured him away from guards, after a talk BlackStrider blinded him and together they fed him with bullets and arrows. In the Inn they picked Jaheira and Khalid (again I hesitate whether to keep Khalid or take Kivan instead...from roleplay side I think I should keep him, but Kivan, imo, will be far more useful. In any case I mostly use Jaheira as fireresistant tank and Kivan (as elf), is more sutable with swords/bows. Will see...). After report to Landrin party headed to Peldvale, saved Viconia and she joined the group. Now my party is quite complete (l'm planning to pick Coran later as a last member if all will be going well enough).
to be continued...

Picked up Coran and went to get the wyvern's tail. Killed two when they ambushed the party. Got up to level 7. Rest of the party level5/level5. Went north of the carnival to get an unbreakable sword for Coran.
Completed the mines with little difficulty apart from battle with Mulahey, when Mulahey interupted buffing.

After a looong heavy thoughts I decided to keep both Khalid & Kivan (as RP-wise and usefullness-wise) so party went to High Hedge and picked Kivan. Then we finished belt Orge area (all xvarts/gibberling pack are doubled at the moment.. ouch) and headed to Nashkel. Neira was blinded and killed easy. Group visited Carnival, freed Branven and sent her to FAI. Greywolf resisted first Blindness but second passed. Mines themselfs were quite ease. Mulahey was Commanded and Blinded. Xan sent to FAI. Amasons were webbed and fireballed with necklace of missiles from Carnival. When we met Narcillicus Harwilliger Neen Mistress Luck turned her face away from us... both Jaheira (lvl 2/2) and Khalid (lvl3) were killed by Mustard Jellies while brought only one of them to near death. Kivan finished it with fire arrows and party fled the second one. Back to Nashkel to revive Jaheira and Khalid and onward to Gnoll Stronghold. Freed Dynaheir and sent both her and Minsc to FAI. At the moment party explored all western (coast) areas. Melicamp again doesn't survived untichickenator (second no-reload second bad luck while he almost always survived in my *plain* walkthoughs). Viconia's skellies helped a lot vs sirines. Now we have 20 rep and 19 charisma so performed some shopping - Full plate for Jaheira, Robes of Archmages for BlackStrider and Imoen (dualed at lvl6, 100% traps/locks). Now headed onto the rising sun.
to be continued.

In the mines I got Xan to join the party. Yet another elf, but one to whom I have quite warm feelings, unlike Coran who likes to think himself a lady killer, but who is actually a lady borer.
When Nimbul attacked us, Xan was killed, so we went to the temple and raised him.
On the trip north we met some lady ogres in need of dieting advice.
Further north was ambushed once more (Dark Horizons just installed) Xan was killed AGAIN!!!
He is getting expensive, 1600gp already!! But he is a dear so cheap at the price.
Met some druids. Osmadi was quite a problem with his call lightning, and his brown bears also caused problems after he died.
The Lamhalda ambush was unsuccessful.
At the Friendly Arms met some new merchants. Kicking myself for buying robe of Neutral Archmage for Xan as much better one available at just 5000gp more.
Did get some decent helmets however, (Armour bonus +1 and also one of charm protection)
