I eliminate the experience point gap & clean out every other stop in BG/ToTSC before going to DsT (Ice island, Balduran, etc).  There is a bunch of experience there & I like it going into the final battle & BGII/ToB.

Now excuse me while I geek out:  DsT is really a medieval keep that derived from the older dirt & timber Motte & Bailey Castles. The Keep (tower - or Donjon) is the last line of defense.  The Bailey is the courtyard outside the keep but inside the Curtain Wall. DsT has a typical Drawbridge & Barbican. Inside the Drawbridge is the Portcullis (metal gate) covered by the Gate Towers & the Breastwork between them - all designed to protect the Keep. The Battlements (from which the Skeleton's rain down arrows & the Bastions (towers in the curtain wall) all make this a typical European/Crusader Castle...which is why I love this adventure & the Gnoll Stonghold so much.

Btw, I met a guy on a plane last week who builds games & is very familiar w/Baldur's Gate. I'm talking w/him about writing a mod to make a secondary Gnoll Stronghold adventure similar to DsT that leads thru several increasingly harder levels, maybe even to a portal to the 422d layer of the abyss where Yeenoghu, Demon Lord of Gnolls resides. It could also lead to layer 421 where Doresain, Demon Lord of Ghouls resides because Doresain is a vassal of Yeenoghu.  I don't know yet just playing around w/ideas now. There are also Aspects of Demon Lords, namely their earthly form, which are still very dangerous & could serve as the final battle like the Demon Knight in DsT.  Oh well, that's a long way off but stay tuned. Of course, I'd have him make this for Tutu b/c too many of the mods I like are not available in EE, e.g., my favorites are Hard Times, Level 1 NPCs, MegaMod Kits, Randomizer, etc., none of which I think are usable w/EE.  I think SCS is but that's another I prefer.

Now, to Level 4 baby! Bring on the demon Knight for an ass whoopin'! (then it'll take me a week to complete the write up - :l  lol

CKT

Thanks for this CKT. Instructive, I appreciate it.
Would be awesome if you and the other guy could get together for that mod. Not only does it sound like a very good addition (the vanilla Gnoll Stronghold adventure is a bit bland imo), it would also be well-written.

Corerage II the enraged Half-Orc entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge

His stats:

Baldr323_zpsfaops2d0.png

Two-Hand Sword *****

The Story:

Gorion says we need to leave soon - we have never left Candlekeep that I can remember. I'm glad though - I'm having a harder time controlling my rage, if I leave here prehaps it will be less of a problem. I would like to channel it with fighting, but Gorion to date has only allowed me to use wooden swords! Bah! There must be a real weapon for me, somewhere. But I don't have the gold, so unless a powerful weapon falls in my lap...

Regardless, Gorion did get me some gold - I was able to get a two-hand sword, helmet and a quarrel of bolts. I don't quite have enough gold to get the best armor Winthrop has (splint mail) - perhaps I can do some errands. I looked around the keep and sure enough, brought the bolts to Fuller, returned Hull's sword, cleared out some rats, returned a book to Phyldia, and gave antidote for that sick cow. That was just enough to get the splint mail, so I did. Good thing too, as shortly thereafter I found two assassins, Carbos and Shank. But they couldn't even hit me before I slew them. I noticed a part of me relishes the bloodshed - even so, I do remember what Gorion taught me, so if possible will reserve my rage for my enemies - apparently these assasins indicate I do have some - good.

Gorion and I leave, only to be ambushed by a powerful group lead by a dark figure - I wanted to charge the ogres, but my father would have none of it - I realized my father was right, I would just die, I must choose another time. But I returned the scene later, and found my father slain. I resolve to avenge you myself, father - no others will help me. This my task alone. I know my rage can see me through.

Imoen found me and joined my group before I could do anything. I took a few things she won't be needing, and sent her off. I found two evil looking travelers on the road - perhaps they are linked to my killer? I didn't give them a chance to change my mind and slew them - they had some blue potions and some spells I could sell.

I then headed east - I found a ring in a rock and equipped it - some dire wolves chased me - don't want to face them in splint mail, so headed to FAI as my father instructed. I then heard a voice I hadn't heard before "look for a ring by a tree, head a bit east" - I did and found a magical ring! Should sell for a pretty penny.

I then reconsidered - what if my killers knew I would head for FAI? Could be another assassin. So did instead what they wouldn't expect, I went for Beregost. I sold my stuff I didn't need and could afford full plate! This has to be a step in the right direction...I then hear that voice again - "head south, south, then west, west, west - there you will find me and we will complete each other!"

I didn't know what else to do, so I did so, easily dispatching some ogrillions in my way. There were also quite a few gnolls in my way, but they weren't too hard either. I eventually find a man named Brage - he killed a caravan - perhaps in anger? I can understand that myself, so did not kill him, but suggested taking him to a Temple of Helm. He gave me a potion - and a powerful sword! Oddly, when I put the sword in my backpack, I heard a voice - "you've found me! Use me soon!" It's the same voice! A sword? It almost seems to want to control me, perhaps it can channel my rage.

Brage is returned and I feel stronger. I'm not quite ready to equip the sword, I want to rest to think about it - I meet another assassin named Neira - but when I enraged then attacked, she could do nothing and died. If there's going to be so many assassins, I better use this new magical sword soon...

I rest, equip the [cursed] magical sword and head south. I find a "dog" for a boy and had my first test with this sword - some skeletons using bows - they did get a good hit on me, but they were destroyed. The sword took control me during battle - I didn't even have to think, it channeled my rage and hit my enemies very hard - yes this can work!

I then head west but get an ambush! I hear spells being cast and I run for my life - amazingly the sword knew fighting was wrong and did not stop my flight. I need more experience before I can take ogre mages I think. Regardless, I get to the lake area and go a bit south [to avoid bears] and find Caldo and Krumm. I try to help a neriad, and killed them easily - but I could not stop my rage in time and also slew the Neriad! People will think less of me for sure. The neriad's loss is unfortunate, but nothing must stop me from avenging my father, not even innocents.

Baldr322_zpsk5hdiy1z.png

I had a few more encounters in the area and needed to get to a store but encounter some winter wolves! Uh, oh. I wasn't sure if I should enrage or not, but I took too long and sword controlled my actions - I did manage to slay the two winter wolves in time, but better enrage next time I think, cut it a bit close. Regardless I sell my goods and return to the Gnoll Stronghold. These enemies were easily defeated with my new sword, though I was careful to enrage before dealing with the carrion crawler, as well as careful to sleep to get my enrage back before leaving the area, in case of an ambush [especially ghoul/ghast ambush].

My new sword easily dealt with a spider infestation in Beregost. Now that I was better equipped, I didn't fear any assassin that may have been at FAI - just before I was to get to the stairs, the sword spoke to me "Use your shield amulet, enrage and run as far as you can up the stairs before I take control." I trust the sword so did so - ah a mage assassin! He probably knows magic missile, so the sword may have saved my life - but it didn't matter as I hacked the assassin dead by finding the right image - his mirror image spell did not save him. And by running up the stairs I didn't hack at any guards - good call sword!

I found Landarin inside - she appreciated her goods and gave me some gold. I now have 11,000 gold - the sword tells me there are things at Ulgoth's Beard that I need - it suggests stay to the edges of the farm area to traverse there so I will. So far this sword seems better than any group mate. Your killer will pay Gorion, I promise.

Nice journaling there Corey! Corerage the 2nd is quite eloquent considering his modest mental stats.
I've always wanted to try a Cursed Berserking Sword playthrough myself. Good luck!

Corerage II the enraged half-orc - FINAL Update!

Corerage II journal - penned by Kivan

Corerage had invited me to the group - he said I would help him get a helmet of defense. I wasn't sure what exactly what he meant but that sounded good. We made it to the coast and Corerage moved ahead - he didn't see any enemies and waved me forward. But when I moved forward two dread wolves attacked! I didn't think I could take them so ran to Corerage. Corerage easily defeated the dread wolves - but wait he's attacking that Neriad [Shoal] - I tried to warn him off but it was like he couldn't hear me. They had a brief conversation - Corerage tried to pull away but she kissed him quickly - and he fell dead! I stood there dumbfounded - now who will help me vs. the bandits and help me get my revenge on Tazok! Drats!

Baldr324_zpsbjpfpztd.png

[note from corey_russell: This was a rather silly mistake - I'll take a break then restart Corerage again (I made a starting save for him - I thought it might take more than one try)]. Good luck the rest of the runs in progress!]

That sucks C_R:

See, to me, that's a stupid & unfair way to die.  A game should give you a fighting chance & in general, the PC is the leader of the group & I suspect in most cases, the spokesman.  As a Knight, I usually have a Bard or other herald who communicates for me, so this situation rarely affects me... but it has.

There's another stupid one...I couldn't think of it for a moment.  If you choose to run up to the third floor of Candlekeep in Chapter 5 or 6 & run into the Gatewarden & choose not to surrender, a Flame Strike comes out of the sky & kills your PC.  I had a PC with 90 something hitpoints die to that Flamestrike.

That's not 'sportsmanship' or 'gamesmanship.' Like I said, I use a herald to speak for me since I'm always a knight but in the case of the Gatewarden, he would be an old friend, the one who trained me.  Even though I know what's in every nook & cranny of the game & know about traps, monsters & these stupid things, I take every step & make every decision as if I didn't.

I don't call that a reload, I just call it stupid, stupid, stupid.  The only reason I put 'like' on that post is because you're honest enough to admit it C_R.

Thanks CKT. The game was not designed to be no-reloaded. The intended for you to find this "gotcha" and when you die, reload and then try something different. We are using it in a way they possibly didn't envision. I'm OK with what happened. I should have been more careful - e.g., when Kivan got attacked run to him and then when I got the aggro Kivan could get away. Then nothing bad happens.

There are many "gotchas" in the game - to successful in reloading you got to learn them all (basilisk gaze, cleric hold persons, Angelo's arrows of detonation, etc.). It didn't take very long to get as far as Corerage II got, so when I'm ready, it will not take much time to get where I was.

Good luck Corey with Corerage the 3rd, if that's going to be your next charname...

Glorydd, Dwarven Fighter/Thief, 8th and final update

Glorydd's stay in Candlekeep would be a short one. Upon arrival she had an ale at Winthrop's, who confirmed that the Iron Throne leaders were residing at the library. She thought of seeking them out right away but she was tired and it was late, so she decided to rest and visit the library first thing in the morning. She had yet another of those restless nights filled with sinister dreams and visions. This time they started with pleasant images of herself as a child and of Gorion in Candlekeep, but they also featured dark visions of an infuriated Ulraunt, and of Gorion's death. The unfriendly voice kept telling her 'Like father, like child'. Glorydd wondered the next morning whether the voice was referring to her foster father Gorion or to her real father, whom she had never known (unaware at that moment that she wouldn't have to wonder for long). As before, she woke up conscious of a new innate power. This one being the ability to draw upon a divine might.

It was still early, but she went to visit the library anyway. Inside, she spoke with a man named Koveras, a visitor like herself, and with a few of the her old acquaintances. There were other people she would have liked to see, including the Iron Throne board with whom she still had some unfinished business, but she was arrested by the Gatewarden, for killing the same Iron Throne leaders she hadn't even met!

She would have been delivered to the Baldur's Gate authorities to receive her (capital) punishment if it weren't for good old Tethtoril, who somehow managed to teleport her to secret catacombs below the citadel. The old priest also pointed out to Glorydd that 'Koveras' was Sarevok spelled backwards (how could she have missed that!?), and he gave her a very revealing letter that Gorion had left for her. It told her that her real father was the dead God of Murder, Bhaal, of the human pantheon. Apparently Bhaal had foreseen his death during the Times of Troubles, when the Gods walked the realms, and forced himself upon females of all races, including her Dwarven mother. The letter also warned Glorydd of many who would want to use her for her own purposes, and of Sarevok, who as a former student at Candlekeep knew a great deal about Glorydd and her history.
The Dwarf forced herself to think as little as possible of the implications of being a child of Bhaal and to focus on a number of more urgent issues: escaping from Candlekeep, clearing her name, and dealing with Sarevok who, she now realized, had been responsible for Gorion's death and for the bounty hunters and assassins. Apparently he had used the Iron Throne as a tool to accomplish his own, darker objectives.

In the catacombs Glorydd was surprised to run into her old neighbor Phlydia, until Phlydia changed shape and became an ugly, greyish, familiar-looking creature: a Doppelganger. This was actually much less of a surprise, as Sarevok and the iron Throne had used Doppelgangers in Baldur's Gate to orchestrate the downfall of rivaling merchant houses. She slew the creature, and proceeded to carefully explore the catacombs. The Dwarf's keen eye for snares found the hallways heavily trapped, but she had no difficulty disarming the snares. It allowed her to pick up some interesting items, including two more magical, abililty increasing tomes of the type she had found before during her travels. She eventually escaped, hidden in shadows, bypassing more Doppelgangers, a party of adventurers, two Basilisks and, back above ground, a group of Ogre Magi.

For her own safety, and out of a long-suppressed curiosity, Glorydd traveled to Durlag's Tower rather than heading straight to Baldur's Gate, where she was wanted by local law enforcement. She would use the side trip to clear her mind on recent events, and to lay low for a while. But a couple of triggered traps, a tome of Wisdom and a frustrating (undecided) battle against a succubus later, she found herself outside the tower again, decided to set things straight in Baldur's Gate.
[I seriously considered trying Durlag's Tower as I've never done it solo. But the no-reload survival instinct prevailed. I have a separate save though, so I might just give it a try, when no-reload Glorydd is in Amn.]

Back in Baldur's Gate, Glorydd kept a very low profile. She spoke only with people she knew and trusted: her friends at the Guild, Halbazzar Drin at the Sorcerous Sundries, and Silence (whose shop formed the setting of a rough night with dreams of Bhaal and of Sarevok, culminating in a second divine might ability the next morning). She also spoke with a woman that seemed to know an awful lot about Sarevok and herself, Tamoko. It was she who directed Glorydd to the Undercellars, to slay an assassin named Slythe - quaffing healing potions and dispelling his haste while being hasted herself - as well as his lover Krystin, an arcane caster. Slythe had carried two very interesting documents: an invitation to Sarevok's coronation at the Ducal Palace (apparently Glorydd had returned none too soon), and a letter confirming Tamoko's words that Sarevok had wanted to kill all the Dukes of Baldur's Gate. She also took an enchanted short sword from Slythe before she rushed to the Ducal Palace.

When she arrivedat the palace the ceremony seemed to have begun already. Glorydd saw various nobles assembled for the event, waiting for Dukes Belt and Liia Jannath and for Sarevok to speak. When the Dwarf asked one of the nobles whether she had missed something, he remained silent and just looked at her with two expressionless eyes. When a second nobleman's response, or complete lack thereof, was identical to that of the first, Glorydd knew enough: these were Doppelgangers. She stepped back, set two snares behind the Doppelgangers, and buffed with various potions (violet, fortitude, agility, mind focusing x2, defense, heroism, power) and an oil of speed. She was still protected from magic as per a green scroll she had used against Slythe and Krystin, so she wouldn't be able to heal Belt or Liia.
Thankfully she didn't have to. Poisoned arrows of dispelling, Belt's incessant fighting in spite of his being confused, and poisoned melee attacks finished the Doppelgangers off in no time. (The poison was from vials Glorydd had bought from Black Lily at the Thieves Guild.) Evidence of Sarevok's nefarious schemes was presented to both surviving Dukes. It caused Sarevok to attack the guards. Glorydd landed a backstab that did little damage, and was eager to finish Sarevok there and then, but she saw her foe disappear by means of an incoming wizard's teleportation magic. Liia Jannath's powers of divination located Sarevok and the wizard in a maze below the Thieves Guild, and teleported Glorydd to the Guild.

Stealthed and still fully buffed, Glorydd rushed through the maze ignoring monsters and harmless traps. She reached a ruined city, well below the surface upon which Baldur's Gate had been built. At different locations she spotted a party of mercenaries whose allegiances she could only guess, many undead, and Tamoko. But none of them saw her slip by and enter an ancient temple that proved to be Sarevok's hideout.
He received her with four of his most loyal allies: Diarmid, an archer, Tazok, and the wizards Angelo and Semaj. He also, finally, explained to Glorydd his motives. Like her, he was a Bhaalspawn, but he had known about his heritage much longer. The iron crisis, the bandit plague, and eventually war between Amn and Baldur's Gate were all part of a grand plan for him to take their father's place as the Lord of Murder. Other Bhaalspawn, such as Glorydd, were pests and possible threats that had to be removed.

Glorydd didn't approve of Sarevok's plans. She defeated Diarmid in a ranged duel, dispelled Sarevok's haste as well as Angelo's buffs, making him an easy target, and then pelted Tazok with enchanted arrows until he fell. Semaj knew his magic would be of little use as long as Glorydd was protected from magic; he would not show himself before that protection expired. The wizard dispelled all of Glorydd's buffs and protections, but she remedied that with a potion of magic shielding. The Dwarf's arrows of dispelling and other enchanted arrows then did Semaj in.
Glorydd didn't fancy her chances in melee against heavily armored Sarevok and, for the same reason (the heavy armor) wasn't sure whether her arrows would deal much damage. With surprise attacks from the shadows, stabbing her blade into the openings in his armor, she bested him.

She drank on her succes with Narlen, and Rededge and Black Lily, had a restful night at the Guild, and in the best of spirits reported back to Belt and Jannath, who promptly sent her on a mission to Amn to inform the local authorities of recent events in Baldur's Gate and to offer them peace.

Nice work Blackraven - hopefully you can keep it up. If you keep up the same level of detail of narrative, might be a book you have to write about Amn - so good thing there doesn't appear to be a limit on these threads!

Heh, thanks Corey. Honestly I doubt if I can keep up the writing. It takes a lot of time, and SoA + ToB = huge and has more complex combat, so if I were to continue the storytelling and include lots of combat details, I'd be spamming the thread with walls of text. Also Glorydd is already quite alive as a character to me (so she doesn't necessarily require continued storytelling for me to care for her wellbeing).
If however nice story elements occur to me, small things, I'll probably include them.

You wouldn't necessarily have to write walls of text, e.g., you could say "Glorrydd defeate Suna Seni (spoiler)". People click the spoiler and then see the details. You could see, using this method, you could have a story actually be much longer than it is by default.

That's actually really important, in my opinion. If I connect with a character, I play with greater care. I suspect that's true for other players as well.

I set Blaggerd (Blackguard) up on another run - was going nicely with decent hit points until I reached the basilisks. He almost reached the first basilisk and the game ended... I wasn't sure what happened for a couple of seconds then realised I had used the stone to flesh scroll instead of the protection from petrification one. What a noob.

That's true, I really can't play chars I'm not connected with somehow. That's why I usually end up playing the same character I guess... might have a different class but in the end it's the same character... me :D

Bob the Biffer II (1st and final update - gender dysphoria)

Sarevok_zpsrrpnrzqr.jpg

I was thinking to have another go with Bob, but hadn't taken a starting save with the original.  Whenever I hear the name Bob I can't help thinking of the way Rowan Atkinson pronounces it in the Blackadder episode "Bells" and consequently couldn't resist a change of gender.

I was probably paying a bit too much attention to the cricket world cup this morning rather than the game I was playing and Bob had a couple of close calls.  The only mistake that will cost her going forward though was the failure to pick up the constitution tome.  She wasn't interested in the charisma tome, while the strength tome and one wisdom tome were unobtainable as she is not using potions.

Thanks everyone for your congratulations :)
It's been a relatively clean run, with only one problematic moment early one (when Glorydd had to save vs Neira's Hold Person because a commoner was blocking the way out of the Nashkel Inn).

Grond0, congrats to you as well!

For me it is so. Interestingly I seem unable to make sure that such a connection exists each playthrough, though including some roleplaying and investing in a backstory/personality tends to help me, as does going with an underdog character in terms of stats and/or class.

New portrait so alternate name.

There have been a few troubling moments so far:

Bandit ambush at level 1. Used a healing potion and survived with 6hp.

Bandit ambush at level 3. Was carrying Samuel so dropped 4 throwing axes to get unencumbered and escape with 17hp.

Only hitting Greywolf once in melee so taking several laps with about 15hp until 8 throwing axes finished him off.

Getting scared by Mutamin. Survived the Melf Acid Arrows and recovered after one Larloch Minor Drain with 4hp. His greater basilisk was chasing for melee too. Used 2 healing potions then axed the basilisk to get a level. 3 more throwing axes outpaced 2 more drains.

On the almost unbelievably positive side: 15hp + 26hp (Shoal) + 14hp + 14hp + 13hp = 82hp at level 6. That must be about as high as I've ever had a character at this stage.

3 charges of the necklace of missiles claims 3 victims and Lindin catches an axe almost immediately afterwards.

I understand. That's a huge dilemma for me as well.

I often choose to go heavy on the playing and light on the writing. I always regret it.

My favorite period of BG play was the story driven portion of my Avatars run. I still regret abandoning both the narrative and the game, but especially the narrative.

I'd encourage anyone who has the time and the discipline to embrace role playing and storytelling. Doing so can enhance both the player's gaming experience and the thread.

Best,

A.

Btw. Looking forward to seeing Bob and Karix in Amn!

Best,

A.

@CKT and @Alesia, I hear you. I think CKT's estimation of his time spent writing vs playing applies to me as well. I really like the immersion that comes with (moderate) roleplaying and I also enjoy the writing, but I have two problems with it. First of all, failure to keep a character alive tends to hurt more if you really care about the character, and secondly sometimes I simply want to play rather than write.

Anway, people's appreciation for my narrative efforts, and the fact that I've completed a fully journaled playthrough of BG1 with Glorydd and prefer not to break with my style of reporting her progress, has inspired me to continue in the same way in SoA for now (see installment in the BG2 section).

I really hope CKT survives Durlag's, the Ice Island, Balduran's Island and the last quests of the main game, not only because I wish him a success but also because I'd like to see how his knight interacts with the mysterious and sometimes bizarre world of SoA.

Well Karix won't be seeing anyone in Amn - having rolled another 14 for 96hp at level 7, he went to say hello to Centeol for no good reason other than using up the remainder of a protection from poison scroll. With Centeol and 2 ettercaps left he was feeling confident but went from 10hp to dead in 1 go (EE ettercaps do 1-3 damage so I think both got criticals at the same time). What a waste - won't be seeing that amount of HP for a long time.

Sorry Gate70, it's easy to give in to the temptation of doing unncessary battles...
