I really like the immersion that comes with (moderate) roleplaying and I also enjoy the writing, but I have two problems with it. First of all, failure to keep a character alive tends to hurt more if you really care about the character, and secondly sometimes I simply want to play rather than write.

I sympathize. The latter tends to get me rather than the former. Not all stories have to end in victory, as I see it.

Of course, each player should strike the balance that suits them best.

I enjoy narratives, but I think it's good that we have a variety of posting styles.

Best,

A.

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief - take 12 (update 2)

Day 13 (14 Mirtul, 1368)

With the half-orc gone luck came back because when searching her belongings Dyara found a star sapphire in her pocket (I had totaly forgotten about that - in fact I thought I had overlooked it when I took the ring of fire protection). Dyara used her new wealth to buy some healing potions, an antidote and two scrolls of 'Stone to Flesh'.

Day 14 (15 Mirtul, 1368)

On her way south she remembered the dwarf Unshey and her story about an ogre with a 'fetish for girdles'. A little while and two backstabs later Dyara was the proud owner of now three girdles.

Dyara gained another level-up and became specialized in longbows.

Dyara: 9201 XP, 94 kills, Greywolf, F(3)/M(2)/T(3), 28(31) HP

In Beregost she came by Landrin's house, went inside, casted sleep on the spiders and slew them all. Took the spider body, the wine and some old boots. Then she invited herself into Gerard Travenhurst's Manor where she found some wand and a potion of invisibility. Afterwards she went to the temple to identify the wand (of lightning) and the girdles. One of the girdles, so she was told by the priest, would make her look like a male. She was about to throw it away but then she thought such a belt might come in handy somehow perhaps.

Dyara felt really confident now and started to search the area to test her fighting capability. Some hobgoblins proved to be no challenge but still she gained her next level-up.

Dyara: 11886 XP, 113 kills, Greywolf, F(3)/M(3)/T(4),  32(36) HP

Further east Dyara stumbled over a large pack of worgs, dread wolfes and even two vampiric wolfes. Her heart went into her boots, she tried to back off but two of the large animals, a dread wolf and one of the vampiric wolfs were on her trail and caught up with her easily. Dyara fumbled with the wand of lighning only to hurt herself more than the beasts. Despairingly she grabed her long sword, battered the wolfes and to her very surprise protected by her ankheg plate even the vampiric wolf couldn't hit her (perhaps on a 19 or 20 but its rolls never went that high). On the other hand her strikes hit very hard and the beasts went down in no time. Such a great success made her even more confident and so she went for the rest of the pack and slew them all. Only then she remembered reading in a book about vampiric wolfes and her ability to cause paralysis. It says Tymora smiles on drunkards and children and somewhere between my Dyara fits in I guess.

Somewhat south of where she fought the wolfes Dyara saw a stonelike statue. She used one of the two 'stone to flesh' scrolls to free Corianna who told her about some basilisks to the east and who gave her a 'potion of mirrored eyes'. When resting in Beregost Dyara had already memorized a 'protection from petrification' spell (better had memorised two) and so she was ready for some basilisk hunting.

Day 15 (16 Mirtul, 1368)

She was joined by Korax, a friendly ghoul who was eager to fight at her side. After a while - they had to get rid of some gnolls first - they found the basilisks and the hunting began. It didn't took long and Dyara gained her next level-up (I think that's why I love the F/M/T... so many level-ups)

Dyara: 25106 XP, 124 kills, Greater Basilisk, F(4)/M(3)/T(4), 34(40) HP (I think I had to spend all my luck for other things so there weren't any left for hit dice rolls).

Dyara was just about to go for another (lesser) basilisk when suddenly the protection from petrification wore off. Since she felt she was only a small bit of experience shy of her next two level-ups she quaffed her 'potion of mirrored eyes' and attacked. The basilisk was killed by Korax but nevertheless she gained her two level-ups.

Dyara: 25106 XP, 124 kills, Greater Basilisk, F(4)/M(4)/T(5), 38(45) HP

Dyara knew the potion wouldn't last long but she couldn't stop herself from walking around a litte bit. The wizard most likely responsible for all the basilisks wanted to add her as a statue to his 'garden'. She knew she was in great danger now and so she retreated and sent Korax to fight Mutamin and the greater basilisk standing next to him (felt a little bit sorry for the ghoul though). Unfortunately Dyara just ran into another (luckily lesser) basilisk when her protection wore off. Good thing was that she was out of sight of Mutamin or any other basiliks. Dyara then went through her options and decided to melee the beast and hope for the best. Killing the basilisk took far to long for my frayed nerves but while Dyara heard Korax getting killed she was finally able slay the basilisk.

17-Mutamin.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

Immediately she hid in the shadows and scouted the battle field. Mutamin was near death but the greater basilisk wasn't injured at all. She positioned herself and killed Mutamin using the wand of lightning. Hidden in the shadows she gathered Mutamin's stuff (I didn't knew until then that it's actually possible to gather items without dropping out of stealth).

20-MutaminsStuff2.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

After that she went back to Beregost leaving the rest of the area for another day.

Congrats Alesia. Very different playing style to mine. I just have to do virtually everything and kill all the bad guys. Unless I am playing a pacifist run that is.

Back to Blaggerd.

After using poisoned throwing daggers on Shoal, various reputation tasks were carried out before grabbing a sword from Arghain and heading out to the basilisks. Trying to rest there proved troublesome and killing a series of gnolls meant Korax sidled over. Tired and grumpy from a lack of sleep, Blaggerd sent Korax ahead and saved himself a green scroll. Careful guidance saw every basilisk held and killed, with the same happening to Mutamin.

Lindin managed to save against Korax so Blaggerd used the necklace of missiles to give him a triple blast cremation which also did Peter and Baerin no favours. Blaggerd poisoned his throwing axes and planted one in Lindin, and a few seconds later he moves forward to do the same for Kirian.

On to the sirines, potions of clarity and stone giant strength being used with an oil of speed added to reach Sil after the first group are dead. Then into the cave where a shortbow +1 and arrows +1 account for 3 flesh golems with none of the traps triggered.

A final reputation sweep sees the ankheg nest cleared and a cloak/amulet purchased. Nashkel mine is next, Blaggerd using an amulet charge (because Mulahey is very quick with his first spell in EE). One hit scares the half-orc and Blaggerd finishes him off before eliminating the surrounding minions. The group of Amazons outside take 3 more necklace charges while Nimbul soaks up a deadly poisoning... as does Tranzig.

At the Bandit camp, level 7. 76hp (14/28 from Shoal, 7, 14. Can't remember the last 2 rolls, additional 7 from tome of bodily health).

Thanks Wise!

Understood. And I respect that: I definitely appreciate the completionist perspective.

In the BG world, I intend to be goal oriented. My characters, by association, are the same way. They'll engage in side quests if those quests will help them achieve their main objectives, but it all has to be justified in terms of the primary mission. Quests and battles tend to be examined from a cost benefit perspective. If the benefits outweigh the costs, factoring in the risks, they'll proceed. If they don't -and they have the option of evading- they will. This strikes me as plausible from a role playing standpoint.

In real life, I'm kind of the opposite of my BG characters. In real life, I have to do it all. In real life, doing everything is my primary mission. :P

Best,

A.

After all we did to struggle through the last level, we still had to cut down three Half-Ogres just to get back to Nashkel & recuperate.  Once in Nashkel, we made a trip to Beregost & High Hedge to conduct some business w/Thalantyr. While there, we worked thru six Wild Dogs & six Skeleton’s w/Short Swords & Darts before getting back to Nashkel.

And so, next it was back to the castle to work our way back down to the 4th Labyrinth Level.  After the 3rd Labyrinth Level, I couldn’t imagine what would be even deeper in that place but I was soon to find out.  After the usual three Doppelganger’s & two Phase Spiders, I guided us down to the 4th Labyrinth Level.  There was a Hidden Door on the right side of the main hallway & that was my first target.  It turned out to be what we all called the Glowing Green Caverns but were, in fact, mostly tombs & one of the castles main treasure vaults.  Actually, there was treasure lying everywhere in little pools of water, piled in corners & on the bodies of the undead that filled the place.  By the time we’d worked through everything we’d battled & killed eleven Greater Ghouls, five Crypt Crawlers & three Ghasts.  Greater Ghouls are like super Ghasts that are even tougher to kill & lash out with even more filthy & deadly clawing & biting attacks. Aside from those I mentioned above, we found one cave & had a single battle w/seven more Greater Ghouls & two more Crypt Crawlers that were led by what I can only call a Super Ghoul. That thing was the nastiest of all Ghouls & Ghasts I’ve ever seen. He spoke too, saying that he & the Ghouls were once warriors also but had been consumed by the evil in this place.  We fought really well there & defeated them all & that could have been a bad deal if even one of us had been Held by one of their attacks.  Very proud of my companions on this journey.

FINAL VICTORY OVER SEVEN GREATER GHOULS, TWO CRYPT CRAWLERS & THE 'SUPER GHOUL'

Once out of the Glowing Green Caverns it was back to where Durlag’s apparition stood. Right there was another door that, once opened, led across a lava moat into an L shaped hallway. As always, Imoen used her innate Invisibility & scouted the hallway Finding/Removing Traps. She found/removed one in the doorway to a room that was like a three quarter oval.  Being invisible & still checking for traps she circled the entire room before coming back to report three phase spiders, two sword spiders & two Ettercaps waiting for us there.  Knowing what was ahead, we prepared w/spells & potions & Quayle cloaked us all in Invisibility 10’ Radius.  He has, I think, four of that spell memorized & three each Blindness & Improved Invisibility, two each Deafness & Shadow Door & one each Spook, Reflected Image, Mirror Image, Invisibility & Blur. He also has an innate Invisibility capability. We have learned to use his various versions of invisibility very effectively in movement & combat. (Note: Remember I only allow specialist mages to write/memorize spells from their own schools although they can cast other schools spells from scrolls so scrolls are important to my game). When we finally attacked we had the initiative & ended up exterminating them all.  One of the Phase Spiders was actually an Astral Phase Spider, a monster we’d never seen before. Whereas, Phase Spiders make quick forays from the Ethereal Plane into the natural world to snatch an unlucky creature to feed upon, Astral Phase Spiders hail from the Astral Plane for the same purpose.

It was after this battle that we started to unlock the secret to this castle. There was a Stone Golem in that same room & it drew us toward it. Once I approached & touched it, it asked a riddle. I can’t remember except that I got it & was suddenly transported w/the entire party to a Compass Room with four more Stone Golem’s. I didn’t know how it worked @ first but three of the Golem’s provide info while the fourth asks questions to see if you learned from the other three. I approached the ‘question Golem’ first & answered incorrectly twice. Thankfully, I wear a Ring of Fire Resistance & a Helm of Defense.  Unfortunately, the others don’t so we had a couple of folks singed.  So they moved to the other side of the room the next time I tried. J I got it right the third time & was transported back to where Durlag’s apparition stands.  I led us back to the Spider Room where there was a door in the opposite corner of the room from where we entered originally. I’d seen it before when I approached the Golem but when I got teleported it took the door out of play. Now I was back & Imoen did her usual Invisible Find/Remove traps scouting. She found a Token Machine Room.  Luckily we’d kept every Wardstone we found during our adventures here & the one we got from the Forge Room slipped easily into the Token Machine. I’m not sure what it did but I think it was good.  The next room was a Store Room w/two locked & trapped treasure chests…& another means into the Compass Room. This time I approached a different Golem & realized only one Golem asks the questions. The other three provide the information to answer & so I easily answered the question & was teleported back to Durlag’s apparition. I now knew the answer. There was a throne in the Treasure Room & I felt the power in it, just like I’d just experienced in the Store Room. I knew I could get back into the Compass Room via that throne. I also knew that a visit w/Durlag’s apparition would confirm that I was on the right track…& it did.  It was time to approach Islanne & return to Nashkel, unload a mountain load of gems & come back here to try & get to the final answer.

After our short respite, I wanted to get back & strike while the ‘iron is still hot’ & malleable.  So back thru three Doppelgangers & two Wraith Spiders to Labyrinth Level 4. Straight to the throne in the Treasure Room. Sure enough the throne led us back to the Compass Room. Knowing the key now, I quickly answered the question of the last Golem & found myself back @ Durlag’s apparition.  Sure enough, when I spoke to Durlag, I had finished everything I needed for him to lead me to the ultimate evil that dominates this place.

DURLAG'S APPARITION SATISFIED

fef2e704d04128b2d5b383d0b9c31c.jpg
FOLLOWING DURLAG'S APPARITION TO THE FINAL BATTLE

Key Event:  Durlag’s apparition led us to a Hidden Door that we’d tried to open before. Now it was wide open & led into a room where a defeated adventurer stood. Her party had been wiped out by what she called a Demon Knight, that she said was just beyond the door to the next room.  She beseeched us not to go in there, spoke of a mirror that would duplicate each of us into enemies of ourselves, all but called me a fool for leading us into that room but there was nothing that was keeping me out of there. Knowing he was in there gave us the chance to cast spells, quaff potions, & prepare our attack. We got into the room w/o him seeing us or us him. He was in a circular pit & we were on a circular ledge above it. We were able to circle around, eventually w/me, Branwen, Minsc & Ajantis all on a different staircase leading down to him. He detected our invisibility & threatened us but I was having none of it. Imoen & Quayle were @ different positions from the rest of us so that any attacks on us wouldn’t threaten them too. Then Imoen fired off back to back (10th Level) Magic Missiles & then switched to Arrows of Biting while Quayle used three Scrolls of Flame Arrow followed by Blindness & Deafness I think. Branwen began to cast Silence 15’ Radius to keep the Demon Knight from casting spells while the remainder charged him & waited on Branwen to join us as soon as her spell was complete. We started pounding on him & he was taking punishment but dealing it too. I don’t know what he cast a Branwen, maybe Power Word Stun, but whatever it was she was stunned for the rest of the battle. That bastard also exploded a Fireball which is something we saw the first time he appeared when we first entered.  The Fireball toasted me to my surprise (I later learned that I’d forgotten to get my Ring of Fire Resistance back from Imoen. It also scorched Ajantis big time too. I backed off & quaffed a Potion of Healing while Ajantis used his Lay on Hands (8th Level) on himself. Then it was back to work to finish the Demon Knight who was obviously badly injured. He immediately dispatched Ajantis & Branwen was still stunned. I was badly injured but had no choice but to join Minsc who was fighting a terrific battle in his Enraged state of mind. Quayle was still casting spells & Imoen was still pelting him w/Arrows of Biting.  Minsc & I pounded hard with his Spider Bane Two-Handed Sword +2 & my Bastard Sword +1/+3 versus Shape Changers while the Demon Knight used a Scimitar +2.  I finally landed the blow that killed him & he collapsed in a heap. We’d defeated the evil in this place, as Islanne’s spirit attested & we made our way out of there. We had defeated Durlag’s Tower.  Sure, a few monsters will wander back in here & a few here & there, e.g., the Winter Wolves in the Ice Chamber escaped our blades. Headed back to Nashkel we were attacked by six Wild Dogs & finished them too.

I would like to celebrate & relax a little bit tonight.  I’m disappointed though that Branwen ended our relationship.  Said she couldn’t concentrate in battle worrying about my safety & that, caring for me made her feel uncommitted fully to Tempus.  Oh well, she’s definitely remains my priestess & most trusted partner in a fight. Imoen, of course, is my most trusted advisor.

Congratulations CKT! That was a fine victory and an outstanding writeup!

Btw. Your Durlag's run was one of the best combinations of role-playing, detail oriented coverage, and tactical achievement that I've seen. Excellent work!

Something to consider.  I am playing Imoen as a Charming Rogue from the Mega Mods Kit V 1.01L. I think this is a wonderful alternative to playing her as a Dual-Classed Thief-Mage.  As a Charming Rogue she continues to become even more spectacular in her thieving skills but the kit gives her innate spells that increase @ higher levels, e.g. right now she has Magic Missile x2, Charm x2, Dire Charm, Invisibility x2, Invisibility 10' Radius, Friends x2, Luck, Glitterdust (very helpful @ this level), Reflected Image x2 & of course, Set Snare x2.

As such, I've been able to get her Find/Remove Traps & Open Locks to 100% each & w/'Imoen's Artifact' she's usually @ 105% in each all the time. Backstab is @ x4 & she is @ 10th Level.

The best part of this is that she can use her Invisibility & then move ahead Finding/Removing Traps w/o being seen by creatures that can't detect invisibility.  Even when she disarms a trap it doesn't reveal her invisibility. Combined w/Quayle's Invisibility, Improved Invisibility & Invisibility 10' Radius, she can scout for & remove traps unseen all the time.

I don't think I'll ever play her as a straight Thief-Mage again. I really like this kit.  You might give it a try & see if you like it. CKT

As the otheres have said, a fine achievement CKT!
I think I've never completed DT in a no-reload run (generally end up skipping it, but have one or two failures there as well).

You're getting very close now to a truly roleplayed, completionist no-reload playthrough of BG1. Stay focused!

Ok, enough skulking around. Next contester, Darthus the Cavalier.

Weidu log:

Spoiler

Other tweaks:

strenght score bonuses

level progression (every class uses same chart)

Spoiler

grandmastery tweak

So, without further ado, Darthus, entering the challenge.

P.S.

"Revised critical hit aversion" is kind of "still in progress". In BG1, the following items have this ability: (I mention this because it has a rather drastic effect on No-Reload games :D )

- Helm of Defence

- Amulet of Health (replaces Neckace of Missiles)

- Mail of the Dead

- Adventurer Robe

- Protector of the Second

There are a few more in BG2.

Anyways:

1_zpstz1f2vct.jpg

Darthus will be traveling with a small but powerful party: his sister Imoen, his pal Minsc (barbarian) and his lovely maid Branwen (should Branwen survive BG1, I'll probably install Branwen for BG2 as well. What's a Cavalier without a romance anyway?).

To game - after the usual start (kill Ogre at range with magic missile wand and arrows, pick up 9k ring, sell it, buy full plate + light xbow for Imoen, deal with the spiders, the book and Marl), we traveled further south to get Minsc. Had an ugly battle there vs the priestess assassin, who held both Minsc and Darthus. Minsc survived with 2HP, Imoen saved the barbarian.

2_zpsffilw52t.jpg

Payed 500 for Branwen. Decent enough cleric (unkitted). Now, to save another maid - this led to an ambush by xvarts - and potentially a game-ender. Two criticals connected on Darthus in a split second - leaving him with a 1HP remaining...

3_zpsvmre9sjk.jpg

However, Minsc raged, and moped the floor with the ugly creatures. Prior to rescuing Dynaheir, some more EXP is needed  - gnolls can crit with a 10% chance, possibly doing over 24 damage - which would kill anyone instantly for now. Thus, Greywolf was slain. Branwen's Command was succesfull once, which allowed for 3 consecutive hits, and Minsc's critical finished the job.

4_zpsnbk55moc.jpg

Sendai's party lead to first deaths. We managed to kill her quickly, but her archers were very annoying to deal with. Minsc died to one lucky shot.

5_zpsuqxhyibt.jpg

Brawen....

6_zpsqrtl6ney.jpg

And we still win, but that cost us all healing potions. Back to Nashkel - we raise our dead, buy few potions, and return to the area to get Bracers of Archery for Imoen. Winter wolf was just icing on the exp cake :).

8_zpsu35eg0ai.jpg

Gnoll stronghold was more annoying than hard, with lots of potions used and rests in between - Dynahier was succesfully saved. Unfortunately, one cannot drop her without Minsc leaving, and this encounter came as a perfect excuse to get rid of her.

She should know better than to poke bears... ;)

9_zps8d9dnilp.jpg

Currenty party is at level 3, and should be returning the Flaming Fist desereter to FAI in next session.

Haven't you heard that there are ways of separating them without being evil? No paladin would have let her get killed like that!!

There are a few characters in Baldur's Gate that will only work in pairs. These are Xzar and Montaron, Khalid and Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir, and Eldoth and Skie. If you boot out one character, they will approach your party leader and take their partner with them. There is, however, a way around this. It's not recommended that you use this on your first play-through.

First, find a comfortable, totally empty building somewhere (like a random house in Beregost with nothing important inside). Stick the NPC that you want to ditch inside the building, all alone. Leave the rest of your party outside. Then use the Reform Party screen to boot them out. When they try to come talk to you and remove their partner from your group, they'll be stuck in whatever building you left them in. So you'll keep one half of the pair and the other will be stuck in the house. If you ever enter the house, however, the other character will talk to you and take his/her partner back.

Shame on you for getting Dynahir killed like that! :D

Heh. Well, it's a part of the story. She tried to pet the bear. It's not my fault he got mad at her.

Why don't we say Minsc tried to pet the bear, and Dynaheir rushed in to stop him? That sounds more plausible to me.

Best,

"Revised critical hit aversion" is kind of "still in progress".

Can you explain how this works?

Yeah. In a "regular" game, whatever you put on your head slot gives you immunity to critical hits (be it 1gp helmet, ioun stone, balduran's or whatever.). Now, latest Item Revisions has an option to remove this game feature, and grant critical hit aversion to select few items (very few of which are actually helmets :) ).

This affects both PCs and enemies (apart those which wear the infamous "undroppable helmet with no animation" - they keep invulnerability to critical hits).

It shouldn't have a major effect on BG2 gameplay (some items simply become more valuable, and you must wager if you want to be CS immune or take another item with arguably better properties), but it makes start of the game very hard. Example: Ogre beserker can 1-shot a >30HP warrior.

Looking at the screenshot, my guess is Minsc knew what was gonna happen. He couldn't bare to watch. :D

I hadn't noticed the picture. Clearly she isn't rescuing Minsc.

In that case, I guess we'll have to say that she had been doing some "botantical research" on mushrooms of the psilocybe genus. Her last words were "The colors sound beautiful. Can you hear them?...Oooh! Look at the bear! The bear is Love!"

Ok. So enemies who were previously equipped with helmets, other than the non-droppable helmets, will now be vulnerable to critical hits? Is that correct?

Upon closer inspection of the screenshot, it indeed seems some halucinogenic drugs were used, which made her believe the bear is a cow. Dyna looks as she's trying to milk the bear...

Pretty much. Unless they wear an item (say, a mage has Adventurer's robe, a druid in Grove wears Protector of Second) which specifically gives this immunity.

Anyways, Darthus, 2nd BG1 update

Rather short session before bed saw the return of the Flaming Fist renegade (just how is a paladin supposed to role-play this?!) and the end of Tarnesh. Branwen's Command put him away, a Minsc chunked him.

Other minor stuff (spiders & Joia's ring) were also done. Now we sell a lot of loot gathered so far, and buy Amulet of Health - Darthus gets this for the rest of BG1.

While there, a Pro Acid scroll was bought. Ankhegs are next, and no chances would be taken.

It was a fruitful endeavor, which granted us level 4 - this means Darthus can now cast one level 1 spell.

Finshed Water bowl quest, payed a very short visit to the village where Imoen got Darthus a splendid sword to use. Minsc complained about not having a magical weapon of his own, hence we go him one soon.

I ended with Melium, and we should get to exploring some of Duralg's now.

Currenty party is at level 3, and should be returning the Flaming Fist desereter to FAI in next session.

Cool Cavalier. Close call against those Xvarts & the Gnoll. Yikes.

In BG2 the Gnasty Gnomes have just had a bath with Minsc. There was such a vast amount of bareness, it was frightening.

Dynahier was succesfully saved. Unfortunately, one cannot drop her without Minsc leaving, and this encounter came as a perfect excuse to get rid of her.

She should know better than to poke bears... ;)

So much evil in this world :( :D ;)
