Dynahier was succesfully saved. Unfortunately, one cannot drop her without Minsc leaving, and this encounter came as a perfect excuse to get rid of her.

Strictly speaking, not quite correct. I no longer kill Dynaheir if I don't want her. Instead, go somewhere where you will never go into again (like say, the black lotus tent in the carnival). Send Dynaheir in BY HERSELF. Then remove her. Minsc will be fine with that and you can play your game with Minsc without Dynaheir and you didn't even have to kill her.

@Corey

True. I would have probably done so, but given the random encounter...

Darthus, 3rd BG1 update

Before exploring the big dungeon, we decided to ramp up some more XP and loot. Here you can see Darthus' Challenge evil ability in action. Basically, when he uses this, every non-spellcasting oponnent near him must make a save vs spells or be forced to attack Darthus. Allies near him are untargetable by enemies - in short, Cavalier puts himself in the danger to help his comrades. "Thou shall not mess with my spellcasters! :D " It only lasts for one round, and enemies cannot be affected by it more than once, regardless if it works or not.

16_zps1vsbzwgh.jpg

We had a forced death when Shoal parlored with Imoen, but all was well.

Unlike any other Ogre in the game, Droth is coded as a human - which makes him vulnerable to Hold Persona Non Grata.

17_zpsisrk3zlw.jpg

18_zps5eynz5y3.jpg

Yeah, it's a cheap exploit. Regardless, he doesn't really have enough firepower to kill us.

having reached level 5, Darthus gained immunity to Charm effects - which meant Sirens would be next on to-do list. Minsc managed to get charmed once, but his THAC0 isn't really enough to hit Darthus.

No problems there. Tome of Constitution was used to give Darthus 19 CON.

19_zpsikyc2t8z.jpg

We traveled further south, killed the Doomsayer, took a shortcut to Nashkel by helping Bragge

20_zpsxz0yvzhz.jpg

And finally decided to visit Durlag's. I have no intention of finishing the damn place, but top floors are fairly straighforward with lots of loot to take. Ring of Fire Resistance + Potion of Fire Resistance = immunity to Battle Horrors :)

21_zpstdbhptli.jpg

A Potion of Freedom from Thalantyr was used to clear out the ghasts living in top floors (Kirinhale I avoid).

22_zpsinaludlq.jpg

And some ugly metagaming got us past basilisk outside.

23_zpswrspiuzc.jpg

We are now at 1st bottom floor, at level 6 - Imoen will be dualed to mage once she disarms the traps there, we will (hopefully!) kill the enemies apart guardians, and leave as a very rich group of heroes.

Darthus,  4th BG1 update

Well, the good news is Imoen disarmed all the traps but one, which she survived. The bad news is she did it under invisibility potion and didn't open any locks prior to dualing to mage. Meh.

24_zpsl4mll4ce.jpg

Anyways, we ramped up things there quickly, not bothering with wine and gong.

25_zpsihredxrm.jpg

We killed every oponnent there, and exited the area. We won't return to Durlag's again. Up north, some mecenaries were dealt with. Now Minsc gains critical hit immunity via armor, and dons Helm of Defence to Branwen - this leaves only Imoen vulnerable, but I'm not overly concerned about her.

One Fireball..

26_zpsaieoxiwg.jpg

and a few attacks were enough.

27_zpsu3yqy3ao.jpg

Some more gold is required for final shopping at Ulgoth's. Next is Bassilus. Hit by Lightning bolt from a wand for spell failure..

28_zps89fhkkao.jpg

..and cleaved by Minsc.

29_zpsoxkqzjpe.jpg

With Pro Petrification spell now available, we're ready for Basilisk garden. Mutamin gets poisoned by Imoen (mages can use Light xbows on my install) which slows him down with damage ticks

30_zpsaalvmrow.jpg

And a Holy Smite + an additional bolt does him.

31_zps0ek4zi6y.jpg

Kirian's group was a bloody endeavor.

For the enemies, that is.

32_zps4i1khqle.jpg

33_zpslo0xcjaz.jpg

We sold  a lot of loot, and are now in Ulgoth's, after getting three important items - Cloak of Displacement (+2AC vs melee, +4 vs ranged) for Minsc, Greenstone amulet (permanent Mind Shield)  - Minsc gets this as well - coupled with Spider's Bane (Web + poison immunity) the only vulnerability he will have is Slow; and Ring of Invisibility. We also got Imoen some level 4 scrolls to scribe.

34_zpsdwgphold.jpg

Next session should very likely see the death of Mulahey.

So, I was running a quick character through BG1 with only Imoen and Yeslick, and got to the final battle, and discovered an uber-easy way to kill Sarevok that had never arisen before.

Put everyone but the person with the most HP (and best armor) off in the bottom right corner so they are out of LOS of the skull symbol where Semaj appears. Have your sacrificial goat read a scroll of protection from magic and run up and toss an explodey potion at the dias to bring out Sarevok. Now go to the middle of the skull symbol. There are two traps there, one around the forehead and one on the jaw. As far as I can tell, both traps launch skull traps at the middle of the symbol. You're immune. Nobody else is. Run a circle over both traps continuously, and Sarevok dies in about 10 seconds. The only damage I take is from Sarevok himself, and it's usually only 2-3 hits worth (which is still about 60-70 points of damage, hence the need for someone with a bunch of HP). Kind of mortifying - both in how easy it is, and how I never noticed it before in all the many times I've been there.

As far as I can tell, that one fireball trap cannot be disarmed. I've cheated my way up to a 200 trapskill, and still have never been able to detect it, nevermind actually remove it. 100 works for every other trap in the tower that I've encountered.

It's good to hear from you Matuse!

I think it's awesome that you discovered that. I think it's even more awesome that we all overlooked it for, like, 17 years.

Do you think there is an alternate universe somewhere where someone noticed that in 1998 and told all their friends and later posted it on the internet and then everyone started doing it? And do you think that in that alternate universe someone just today figured out the Wand of Monster Summoning thing?

Best,

A.

I have used those skull traps to kill Sarevok a couple of times in the past, but have found other methods to be more reliable.  In my basic BGT installation triggering the traps sometimes produces skull traps, but sometimes dart traps (which ignore magic protection).  While a fighter may well be able to survive the dart damage long enough for the skull traps to kill Sarevok I think it's safer just to shoot him.

Pelz - half-elf shapeshifter (update 1)

After my latest kensai failure I thought I'd leave those for a bit (at least in single player) and have a go with a shapeshifter.  I don't think I've ever really played druids to their capacity and that may be why I'm not sure about Pelz's chances in the ToB encounters.  He should have decent prospects up to then though.

Low level druids are not powerhouses, but strategic use of entangles, e.g. to provide time to cast more attacking spells can help significantly: use of charm person or mammal has also helped either to win battles for him directly or to whittle down opponents to where he can finish them off easily.  Pelz has spent a fair amount of time in his wolf shape to take advantage of quick kills against the weaker opponents, but even so he's still done quite a bit of running and throwing darts to deal with stronger enemies.

I didn't go early to the basilisks (which would effectively have allowed Pelz to skip the early game strategies), but he will be off there shortly.  With summons already now available he should be able to make rapid progress through the game after that.

Pelz - half-elf shapeshifter (update 2)

There was time before work for Pelz to make some decent further progress in BG1.  I didn't mention it in my initial update, but Pelz is operating with my normal restrictions, i.e. no potions or other item-based active healing.

At the basilisk area wolfie made short work of the basilisks.  Korax then sneaked up on Mutamin to touch him up before various summons were entangled together with Kirian's party as the lightning rained down.

Nimbul was stuck in an entangle and also got a close-up view of a lightning storm, while Tranzig was summoned to death.

At the Bandit Camp wolfie was wearing Nimbul's boots and the bandits could only hit him with a critical.  With most of those dead a couple of nymphs appeared to help with Taugosz - he was dominated before being killed surprisingly quickly by some lucky shots from bandits around the tent.  With those eliminated, Raemon's gang were invited to party outside.

With summons available I didn't feel the need for any specific protection against web traps while passing through the Cloakwood to get to the mine.  An opening assault there with summons was broken off with only Drasus and Genthore dead after both the mages successfully saved against a number of nymph spells (along with a Bhaal horror).  After a rest though both were immediately scared by Pelz's reappearance (although they were not aware of that before being scared) and didn't survive their run around.

In the mine Pelz bypassed Hareishan on the way down the mine.  He did get badly hurt when hit (and poisoned) 3 times in rapid succession by lucky shots from the hobgoblin elites that hang around the exit leading to Davaeorn, but was able to run back upstairs to ditch the pursuers and change form to cast slow poison on himself (the hobgoblin poison has a slow tick and as all 3 hits had come pretty much together there was plenty of time in between ticks for the spell to cast safely).  After resting to heal he came back and decoyed the battle horrors upstairs where they chased a summons while Pelz nipped downstairs behind them.  A couple of dogs were used to get rid of Davaeorn's opening fire and lightning spells before he was shut down with an insect plague - leaving him a helpless victim of rather bigger bites.

GL with your shapeshifter Grond0. I have an exellent portrait for a bloodthirsty druid character, if Darthus bites the dust I'll probably use it for a custom NPC since I'm not fond of spellcaster protagonists.

Garthus, 5th BG1 update

First things first - Mulahey died. A pre-set Skull Trap dealt with the minor foes that beam in from nowehere

35_zpsabb2zqni.jpg

Silence was used to prevent any further attempt at spellcasting

36_zps8ix7ynjd.jpg

And swords were used to kill the evil priest.

37_zps636opmbw.jpg

That done, we exit the mines, plunge through the amazons

38_zpspnhyoxmp.jpg

And nearly loose Minsc to Revenant. I had only two Free Action potions and was reluctant to use them, depending on Branwen to use a Flamestrike scroll. Unfortunately, I misclicked with her selected and spell was cancelled. No harm done, and we finsihed the rest of the area easilly, leaving the mage with Jellys alone.

39_zps10klpno4.jpg

Reported back to Nashkel, dealt with Nimbul with Paralyzation wand.

40_zps1gz0xoqz.jpg

Tranzig got the same treatment.

41_zpssiuipis4.jpg

Now, bandit camp. Potion of Free Action was used for Garthus to obtain immunity to Hold Person mage there is so fond of using, while Fireball Wand & Flaming jars were used against minor troops.

42_zpswmwdmkpg.jpg

Khossan ate a paralyzation attack - leaving him wide open to poison bolts-loaded crossbow attacks.

43_zpstieehxfj.jpg

Venkt was also greeted with the paralysis wand - failing the save on the first attempt.

The battle is won.

44_zpsituac0hj.jpg

45_zpskfra0ysg.jpg

Now, to Cloakwood. Branwen came very close to dying when the druid there tagged her with Flamestrike before he gor held.

46_zpsfqsacntq.jpg

Regardless, she survived, he did not, and we were happy to help out Aldeth there. We won't be helping him in BG, however.

With level 7 under the belt, we march to Spider area, clearing it out under Free Action.

47_zpsedqpicdw.jpg

The mines were entered under invisibility cover; I'm reluctant to fight the group outside, and they have no loot I'm even remotely interested in. Pro Magic scroll was used to fight the mage, who ran for cover quite a while, until he finally got stuck in between his own troops.

It didn't take long from that point on for Darthus to punch though his stoneskin/mirror images, and he was slain.

48_zpsopd7dztx.jpg

We give the key to the miner, exit, Darthus drinks up another invisibility potion and we're out of there.

I also prefer 4-person combos. It's easier to level up, it's more convinent to travel, and there's not too much buffing involved. My idea is to pick up Nalia is BG2 and have 5 total, then in ToB Sarevok a full 6. But that's a log way from where we're now - Baldur's Gate city.

Darthus, 6th BG1 update

We rush through this part of the game as I always do. Vay-ya & Desreta are the first to feel the steel. Vay-ya was apperantly a Necromancer, which kind of makes this battle very easy since Necros can't use illusions. Her pal Desreta was chunked beyond repair with two connecting criticals.

"Feel the burning stare of my hamster!"

50_zpseg40ofxy.jpg

Some quests are made fairly short...

51_zpsbtoxp3jp.jpg

Maulers - pre-set 2xSkull Trap + Glyph of Warding. Still one (the one with the axe +2 ) remained alive - for a brief period.

52_zpsc5erod3a.jpg

And Ramazith.

53_zpsvtl5rjk4.jpg

For final battle before we leave the city, we attacked that cheesy magic-immune Drelik

54_zpsymmxz7wl.jpg

And his master. That gave us level 8, and Imoen regained her thieving abilities back since she hit 7th level as a mage.

55_zps0z5wgiqg.jpg

Next session will see the end of BG1 run, one way or the other.

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief - take 12/13 (update 3)

Unfortunately I had to restart because I had re-install BGEE and the mods and thereafter my save did not load properly anymore. Tried to install the mods in all possible ordes but to no avail. My starting save did load however and without making notes it didn't took too long to catch up with my old save. Made everything in exactly the same order, this time however Mellicamp survived which resulted in a large XP boost and so all the level-ups happened somewhat earlier.

This time Dyara was able to blind Greywolf but that made the fight just more troublesome because the blinded Greywolf was in motion all the time and difficult to hit in melee fight (backstab was impossible). In the end Dyara had to use her bow to shot him down. Dyara did not fight Hafiz - there's really no reason to do so and in my previous play it was a missclick anyway. The Kryll fight went much smoother now, Dyara had used her potion of clarity and Dorn wasn't killed. Still the area became flooded with skeletons but in the end Kryll was send into the abyss.

Dyara: 27533 XP, 119 kills, Vampiric Wolf, F(4)/M(4)/T(5), 37 HP (just 2 above min, 0.8 less than average, 8 below max)

Day 13 (14 Mirtul)

After fighting Mutamin and all the basilisks Dyara was about to go back to Beregost when she met Shar-Teel. If Dyara would come up with a male warrior who would beat her in a duell then she would accompany Dyara. How stupid is that, Dyara thought. If Shar-Teel gets beaten by that man then perhaps Dyara would be better off making that man her companion.

28-Shar-Teel-2.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

Nevertheless Dyara equipped that belt she had gained from that ogre south of Friendly Arm Inn and a few moments later she had beaten Shar-Teel in a very short fight. Right after the fight was won Dyara removed the belt using one charge of 'Mistress Mirrorshade's Best Curse-Removing Soap'. At first Dyara wanted to send Shar-Teel away but she saw that the woman was heavily injured and Dyara felt a little bit guilty. And so Dyara took her to the temple in Beregost where her wounds got healed. Afterwards they parted.

Day 14 (15 Mirtul)

After resting Dyara went south to Nashkell. As always on her way south she stopped by Left who lived in that ruined house near the road. While she didn't really knew what to think of the male witch, coming here and talking to him felt a little bit like coming home. And it's NOT, she said to me, because he works out shirtless and likes to swimm without clothes... never saw that anyway.

Day 15 (16 Mirtul)

Dyara arrived in Nashkell at midnight. After buying some healing potions and a 'stone to flesh' scroll she went to the carnival. In one of the tents she saw a mage treatening a woman. Protected by 'Resist Fear' and 'Shield' Dyara tried to calm down Zordral but it was of no avail, the wizard became really mad, he killed Bentha and he wanted to kill Dyara as well. Unfortunately for the wizard and because of this heinous murder Dyara was also very angry now, all the wizard's spells got interrupted and he died quickly.

30-Zordral.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

That gained her another level-up.

Dyara: 28433 XP, 120 kills, Vampiric Wolf, F(5)/M(4)/T(5), 39 HP (2 above min, 1.5 below average, 8 below max)

It's the romantic encounter mod. I've played with RE installed more than once but that part is absolutely new to me because I usually don't come back to that area once I've been to Nashkell and so Left (who leaves after every dialog) and the fact that he has more than one dialog is easy to miss.

And thank you :)

Darthus, 7th and final BG1 update

We started the session by spending most of our gold on Acid Arrows and Detonation arrows, since I won't be visiting Sorcerous Sundries again. Iron Throne was looted under the cover of invisibility, and catacombs were easilly done.

56_zpsgd0prj0g.jpg

I sold and identified the loot over at Thalantyr before leaving to BG again (to Duchal Palace area - then Undercellars to avoid any encounters). I used INT tome on Minsc, so he use green scrolls - Pro Magic was used vs Slythe&Krystin. A magic-immune barbarian left Slythe no chance in combat.

57_zpsrjj5a1ef.jpg

The most sensible thing to do now was to leave Krystin there to rot. However, this leads to her following upstairs and potentially throwing a Chaos or similar - hence I decided to kill her as well. Imoen moved in to slap her with Paralyzation wand - but Krysten recognizes her as a valid Confusion target. The spell sticks on Immy, who goes on a rampage. One commoner down reduces our reputation to 10, second down reduces our reuputation to 6; leading to Fallen status on Darthus. Grrrr....

If somebody knows if Paladinhood can be restored in BG2 (by doing Windspear hills quest) I'd  be happy to know.

58_zpsu2esh0aq.jpg

Aynhow, Branwen removes the ill effect from Immy, Wand attack paralyzes Krystin and we're out of here - donating all our gold gave us a reputation of 14.

59_zpslynxnnwv.jpg

60_zpsw4dphfp9.jpg

Duchal palace dopes were dealt with Chaos, no trouble here.

61_zps8c11kxxa.jpg

Liia didn't survive, but that's fine. Belt did, and sent us hunting the big armored guy. From this point on, we travel invisible.

62_zpsurognus1.jpg

Sarevok was pretty much standard. Minsc is to be the Detonation thrower. Angelo decided to reveal him, however. Or I tought so.

63_zpszaiqr369.jpg

He charged the rest of the group instead. I didn't really expect that, but nvm. Imoen uses Wand on him, and he's a gonner.

64_zpstup8mexj.jpg

With Angelo out of the picture, the battle gets very easy.

Tazok gets blown first

65_zpstu2pkixx.jpg

Semaj....

66_zps1axjed3f.jpg

With only Diramid and Sarevok left, we can use summons to hold them. aTweaks Undead actually has an impact on this battle - the skeletons born from slain Sarevok's acolytes incite fear in summons since they're such low-leveled, thus a Remove Fear from Branwen was used prior to engaging the two remaining enemies.

Two Gnolls made it through Sarevok's attacks to pin Diramid, and he's down.

67_zpsiak2wz5v.jpg

Now it was a simple matter of spamming Wand of MS to keep Sarevok occupied, while dealing with the skeletons first.

68_zpspgcoxchh.jpg

He didn't stand a chance.

69_zpsul3lvbgc.jpg

Darthus, the now Fallen Cavalier (grrrr....) will be entering BG2 No-Reload soon.

Pelz - half-elf shapeshifter (update 3)

With a couple of horrors in the bag, Pelz concentrated on maximising reputation for a while.  Despite getting a chicken dinner for about the 6th time in a row, she had no trouble doing that.  Moving up towards Ulgoth's Beard she stopped off at an ankheg nest and used ironskins for the first time while emptying that - though the last ankheg did manage to get down to her real skin and do serious damage - this screenshot is after she has changed shapes a couple of times (getting 9 HPs back each time due to the constitution difference).

Just for a lark while doing those quests Pelz took on the doomsayer.  Three lots of insect damage stuck taking it to near death (while it was chasing summons) and she finished it off with a single hit in melee.

She picked up a few purchases in Ulgoth's Beard before then heading for the Lighthouse area.  With XP already high she left the sirines alone and just ransacked the pirate hoard (even though the constitution tome doesn't actually offer her any real benefits, unlike with a fighter type).  Similarly she skipped past enemies invisibly at Durlag's Tower in order to get the rather more useful wisdom tome using the Greenstone Amulet for protection.

Arriving at the City she collected the dexterity tome before undertaking the poison quest.  That added another wisdom tome to her collection on the way to find Marek.  He managed to confuse all 3 nymphs around him, but found being held in return to be a bad bargain.  Pelz managed to kill the 3 nymphs before they attacked any innocents - just as Marek expired from insect bites and nymph attacks.

After picking up the Helm of Balduran Pelz went to sort out Ramazith and pick up the final tome (again just doing so invisibly).  She then sneaked into the Iron Throne to interview Thaldorn and has just been sent back to Candlekeep.

@Aasim: Yes, you can restore your paladin abilities by rescuing Windspear's daughter (I've done this before). I once tried to get the wisdom tome from the priest of Tymor in Baldur's Gate by force and it dropped my reputation to fallen status - we were fallen for the entire time, except my PC regained his abilities doing Windspear quest.

To be a bit more specific, after you rescue Windspear's daughter, then report to Garren Windspear - at that moment your paladin abilities are restored.
