Does anyone have a thorough understanding of how Vampiric Touch actually adds hitpoints? Alastria's hitpoint total is doing some really funky things these day. Sometimes it works fine. But a moment ago, I had a Flind (with a base Hitpoint total of 30) stomping around with 93 hitpoints. Now I have a level 8 Sorceress with 109 hitpoints. The numbers are definitely going flooey...

Hey all!  Thanks for all the responses, especially for the discussion on luck.  I'll have to keep in mind that luck and chant do well as protective buffs, especially against magic damage.  I definately benefited from a little good luck in Cloakwood in the BG1 challenge, and I am sure I will need it in Amn if Tolman is to make it through the challenge in BG2.

And, A.  Keep up the story about Alastria.  It is very interesting.  I really like the mental image of a fire-breathing jelly running like Speedy Gonzales.  Very gutsy to use it against a party with warriors.  I only ever used the jelly polymorph on liches and beholders.

I'll keep it up as long as she stays alive. I hope that's a while.

A hasted firebreathing Jelly is a dangerous thing! I found it amusing in that battle since that crew is so braggadocious. It was great to see them go up in flames completely stumped. And Genthore hiding only to be chunked by a Flind later. That was a nice bonus.

A.

Btw. Jelly form is a nice choice against Thieves as well. It's immune to piercing damage.

Vampiric touch adds how much damage it did which is a random number. The Flind form has lower constitution then 18 so that will probably be the reason for the variation. Hope that answers your question.

Third Level of Mines
Alexis uses mirror image to trigger the traps on the third level. In fact she uses mirror image to trigger all the traps in this room. She can memorize two sets of mirror image so it is all the more helpful.

Alexis fights Mulahey
Storming into the abode of Mulahey was a simple task. Before entering, Alexis prepared herself with mirror image(and I think shield?) and drank a potion of freedom. As she confronted Mulahey without her plate armor on, she cast blind on Mulahey and guess what? It was a success! He just stood there still, doing nothing at all as Alexis shot him with arrows. There were some kobolds attacking Alexis so she used a charge of the wand of sleep to all put them out of the action. Mulahey died soon enough, but Alexis needed to finish off the rest of his minions, which included skeletons and more kobolds. It was pest control but it was irritable for her to move around and whack them with her sword. She finished this clean up job as well and picked up spells and potions in the chest. Upon return to Nashkel she returned a ring to the commoner who had lost her husband in the mines.

Alexis fights Nimbul
Before moving near the Nashkel Inn, Alexis moved to the Circus area and memorized resist fear. She would cast resist fear upon herself because she felt that there would be people after her after she had destroyed their plans in the Nashkel Mines. In addition she is psychic due to her magery(yes its a stretch). In any case there was an assailant waiting near Nashkel Mines. His first spell cast was mirror image and then he moved to horror. Alexis herself cast mirror image, and then pro-evil, and then shield which did not guard her against the magic missiles sent at her, fortunately the mirror image did. This particular assassin has very high AC(or something like thaty) and it took the entire Nashkel guard to take him down with arrows even though he had been blinded. Yes, Alexis cast blind on him and it hit. She took his stuff and move onwards.

Alexis teams up with Drizzt
In a meeting of heroic porportions, Alexis meets the legendary drow Drizzt. A huge pack of gnolls had attacked Alexis, and while Alexis certainly had the situation under control, using a sleep spell to deplete this pack of around half their group, the great hero Drizzt decided to partake in the action anyways. He was taking care of the gnolls very quickly, in fact much more quickly then Alexis. Thankfully he did not bother with the sleeping gnolls, perhaps he had a sense of honor about him? Not so much with Alexis who happily swung her sword down on the gnolls and hacked them to pieces.

Alexis goes down an Ankheg Hole
The first experience fighting with an Ankheg proved to be quite scary for Alexis, namely because she did not buff anything and went up straight up hack and slash. The ankheg managed to brutalize her up to half her health in one hit! Apparently -4AC isn't going to cut it against these things. Her second ankheg wasn't much better, and she could not manage to kill it. She had gulped down perhaps two or three healing potions before coming down to the realization she wasn't going to kill them this lazy way. She retreated to the Friendly Arm area, then rested and plotted her next move. She decided next time to prebuff protection from evil and mirror image to take these fiends on and she lept down the Ankheg Hole.
She had two sets of protection of evil and mirror image memorized. After these spells ran out she would go back to the surface to rest and refuel her spells. She picked up the body of the farmer's dead son, as well as the rest of the treasure in the Ankheg Hole. She went back in to clear the nest.
Upon steadily killing Ankhegs, she got a bit greedy and tried to take one on without being buffed, and this proved to be a fatal mistake and she fell to one of the ankhegs that was in the farm area. Thus ends her run.

Thanks for the reply Shadow_Leech.

That much I understand, but at Level 8 it should do 4d6 and add a commensurate number of hitpoints. It added 63 hitpoints.

This isn't the first time I've observed that. It usually works fine, but every now and then it adds way too many hitpoints. Others have noticed the issue as well (it's mentioned in XYX's Spell Guide). I'm just wondering if anyone knows what's going on there  mechanically.

This is off topic of course...Perhaps we can disucss this in PM or another thread if anyone knows.

Thanks, just a note, Alexandra just happened to be struck by lightning, all it gave me on the game log was her name with lightning attached with a :. No damage was dealt or anything. Just an single observation though. I think we need more examples to verify if this is all it does.

Entering the challenge with Risque.

After a couple of recent solo runs she will be making use of a party and attempting to complete all the mods I've got installed (just for a change).  After discussion on another thread I also feel I should try and dual her to wild mage, although this wouldn't take place until BG2 (if she survives that long).

After reviewing Thailog's progress I was also tempted by the idea of a wizard slayer, so used Level 1 NPCs to convert Kivan into one.  After picking him up along with Imoen, Viconia and Kagain I grabbed some easy XP around Beregost before deciding to kill Drizzt for a big XP boost.  It's a long while since I did this and I only realised after the event just how much of an exploit it would be.  My normal tactic against him is to surround him with dismissed NPCs.  However, I've got the component of Level 1 NPCs that equalises recruited characters to your level installed - effectively this means that, when re-recruited, the whole party got full XP for DrizztPosted Image.  I won't be doing that again, but it does offer a racing start to a campaign if anyone else is interested.

With everyone suddenly much more powerful than I had expected I picked up Edwin (sorceror) to complete the party and headed for the gnoll stronghold.  Deliberately let the ogre mage in the next area to the stronghold spring his trap - he and Edwin cancelled themselves out with successful spells.  Travelling on to the stronghold we were ambushed by another ogre mage.  Again there were simultaneous knock-outs, though this time Viconia did the job.

At the stronghold the ogrillons and a berserked Kagain drew the Dark Horizons opposition into sight and with the mage type quickly dead the others caused no trouble.  However, there was trouble in store once the stronghold had been cleared.  I tried to keep my word to Edwin to dispose of Dynaheir, but Kivan intervened - violently - and he had to be put down.  After disposing of all the treasure clogging up inventories the party recruited Shar-teel, who should have a somewhat less tender conscience than Kivan, and returned south to the Xvart village.  Edwin used several sleeps to good effect - here his first one effectively accounted for the entire first wave of attackers.

Just with reference to the lightning controversy I was too slow to get a screenshot of the strike itself, but here is Kagain taken down to 50% HPs by one.

Alexandra was killed by Bassilus. She had completed everything Alexis did(well she did not stick around killing random gnolls, gibberlings, and other paltry stuff) except the ankhegs and Bassilus, I'll try again with the same character once I roll up.

As for furthur details on her death, her blind spell didn't hit him and for some reason I thought his first spell would be hold person and not rigid thinking. I guess she should of ran like silly. Here's the entry summary of the rest of her quest. Did not include fight with Mulahey as I was preparing her to finish Bassilus next.

Alexandra fights Tarnesh
Early in her career, Alexandra takes on the mage Tarnesh and manages to get off blindness on him. He is slain by the Friendly Arm guards.

Alexandra fights Karlot and Silke
Taking on extremely risky behavior, Alexandra faces off with an assassin and an unhappy employer, and she kills them in the same manner. All it takes is the wonder spell blindness and both fall to the ground. She levels up one fighter level(to level 2). Along the way to Nashkel she kills(blindness) a flaming fist mercenary who threatened her. She took his armor and continued on her quest.

Alexandra fights Neira
This fight had quite a scare for a moment. The assassin Neira saved against the blindness spell! Just to note, Alexandra drank a potion she found off of Silke, and I can't remember what it was but it brought her AC down to -5AC and raised her saving throws. She had also found a scroll of blindness off a hobgoblin earlier and she used it in this battle. But back to the action, Neira had saved against the initial blindness spell, something Alexandra did not expect so she hurriedly ran out the door to avoid whatever spell Neira had been casting. She walked right back in to use the blindness scroll on Neira and this time, the spell hit right on target. Goodbye Neira, it's been nice knowing you.  Alexandra gets the go ahead and kills Greywolf too, taking the long sword +2 as the prize.

Alexandra saves Melicamp!
The luck of the draw as they say, Melicamp is saved! Alexis learns from this incredible event.

Alexandra runs from Ankheg
Alexis heard the cries of a farmer who had lost his son. However, when confronting an ankheg herself, she found that they could save against blindness, so she ran with mirror image covering her back to the Friendly Arm Inn.

Hmmm in my haste I had written Alexis name in there, I guess they are both the same to me anyways, lol.
Well the lesson I learned is not to completely spam blindness and expect to win everytime. I rolled a new Alexandra and she has the same stats except having 18/48 in strength and picking friends.

(Going to try something different) Rolling up six random characters and putting this solo game aside for now.

Chapter 1

Caenor let Imoen give her some items and sent her off. He took items from his killed foster father and got a healing potion along the way from to strangers. He was also lucky to find a diamond in a tree [rolled 19]. He rested and explored the area some more. A Diseased Gibberling got killed with six dart throws, another one with only two throws. A wolf was put to sleep and killed.
Next stop was Beregost where he got through High Hedge and with luckily no bandits along the way. He calmed a fella named Marl and brought old Firebead a  book. After selling some stuff he aquired a Sling +1. A bit south he killed two Ogrillons which had a scroll he brought back to a woman in Beregost. He also killed some Hobgoblins with Sleep and sling but ran milehigh when he saw a bow with one of them. After bringing back some magic boots to his owner he gained level 2 [rolled a 1 on hp]. With 7 hp and Armor cast he took on 4 spiders and killed one. Posted Image His second Sleep affected no spider though so he tried to run away but a spider was in his way and hit him with 6 points of damage and poison. After escaping he tried to gulp a potion of healing but could not since the poison was faster. DEAD

Thanks, surviving the first couple of levels is the main feat. If i'd metagame i would have aquired all secret and NPC items in the starting areas and cheesily killed Tarnesh etc. It's harder making the actions of the character more realistic, but it's certainly more fun to do so.

Understood. And I concur: roleplaying restrictions can make the early going harder..

I generally try to roleplay my characters in tactical challenges, but I usually end up making compromises. Stating guidelines at the outset is a good way to keep yourself honesy. I may try that next time.

Anyhoo. Good luck!

Sometimes it hits and does no damage sometimes it kills a character. I've seen lightnings in Vanilla, TUTU and BGT. It's a creepy feeling running around in a low-hp solo in stormy weather.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game:

Alastria will face off against Davaeorn soon. I'm a bit nervous.
The mines were fun: a good old fashion Sorceress Hack n' Slash. :P

I'll write more about the mines and Davaeorn later.

A Simple Encounter

Since I've been posting on the major battles- and those have understandably differed from typical fights- some may be getting a skewed perspective on what gameplay has been like for Alastria. For the curious, I thought I'd post on a simple encounter to give you a sense.

First, Alastria's current spellbook.

Level 1: Blindness, Chill Touch, Protection from Evil, Shield, Spook
Level 2: Blur, Mirror Image, Invisibility, Strength
Level 3: Melf's Minute Meteors, Remove Magic, Vampiric Touch
Level 4: Polymorph Self, Stoneskins

Ok. This was the group that appears at the entrance to the 3rd Floor of the Cloakwood Mines. As I said, a simple encounter.

Alastria entered Invisible buffed with Polymorph Self, Shield, and Stoneskins. She got in position and then finished off her prebuffs with Blur, Mirror Image, and Pro Evil. Now she's ready to fight.

She broke Invisibility by casting Vampiric Touch- eliminating an enemy and boosting her hitpoint total.
Posted Image

Next, she shifted into Flind form. Fully buffed, she has an AC of -6 (-8 against evil critters), a Missle Adjustment of -9. and 71 Hitpoints. She's Stoneskinned and Mirror Imaged of course. THACO is 16 (without Strength), APR 3.
Posted Image

She has some really bad rolls here. She killed one enemy and sent another running in fear, but  then her Mirror Images were taken out. To keep the odds in her favor, she flipped back, and created more illusions. While in human form, she took the opportunity to dispel potion buffs.
Posted Image

She got back into Flind form and chunked another guard.
Posted Image

Then Polymorph Self expired. After getting kicked back into human form, she threw up more images, and -for a change of pace- went Spider.
Posted Image

The melee style in Spider form is very different. Even though it has an APR of 5, it's often best to use hit and run tactics. This maximizes Poison damage and reduces the number of hits that need to be evaded or absorbed.
Posted Image

It usually only takes one or two taps to drop an average, throw away fighter: the poison is really nasty and doesn't allow a save. This poor bloke got two doses. As you can see it didn't work out well for him.
Posted Image

Comments

So there it is: a simple encounter- for the curious.

Best,

A.

Davaeorn v Alastria (At the First Interlude...)

Well, I can't tell you how SCS Davaeorn v. Alastria ends yet: I don't know- the fight is still going on. All I can say is that it's a long fight filled with things like this.

Davaeorn: Die insulant whelp!
Davaeorn: Melf's Minute Meteors
Davaeorn: Attacks Alastria
Davaeorn: 19+5=24- Miss

Alastria: Necklace of Missles
Alastria did 3 Damage to Davaeorn
Davaeorn: Gulp!

Battle Horror: Attacks Alastria
Alastria: Ooozes Away...

Davaeorn: Show yourself! You can't hide from a mage!
Davaeorn: Detect Invisibility
Alastria: Magic Resistance (!)

Alastria: Attacks Battle Horror
Alastria: 16+4=20- Miss

Davaeorn: Dimmension Door- Alastria
Alastria: Shapeshift- Mustard Jelly

You get the idea. It's basically a stalemate...

One Battle Horror is down. And Alastria has discovered that the Battle Horrors can be seperated from Davaeorn if they're Blinded. The tricky thing is getting the Blindness spells off without giving Davaeorn a window given her meager supplies. Oh how I wish I felt confident enough to go back through the Cloakwood and buy some scrolls....

Anyhoo. I think this one will end up a win, but I can't say for certain. We'll see.

Best,

A.

Davaeorn v. Alastria (At the Second Interlude)

The stalemate has ended. Davaeorn is still breathing, but he basically has no chance of winning at this point.

Alastria could have been more aggressive in this fight. But since this was my first time facing him- and she doesn't have any Potions of Freedom- it made sense to play it safe. I'll post the whole battle soon.

Best,

A.

Davaeorn v. Alastria (Or What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do)

Many moons ago, I atttempted a Trilogy No Reload with a character I was very fond of. Her name was Alisa, she was a Jester. She RPed through the early segments of the game with a like minded party- never straying from the storyline quests. There were some close calls, but all went well. Untill she met Davaeorn.

Davaeorn didn't kill her. But he was a brick wall. Alisa limped out of the mines carrying the bodies of her comrades and as much of their gear as she could. She left a lot behind.

Alisa was broke- she couldn't even afford to raise her friends. She was reduced to hunting Gibberlings to scrounge up the cash to put her party back together. She almost died doing that.

Eventually Alisa, reassembled her team, re-equipped them, and charged back into the mines. The result? Davaeorn demolished her party. Again.

Now, Alisa was underlevelled- and I knew less about the game then than I do now. Nontheless, that memory has stayed with me and I still have an inordinate fear of Davaeorn. Facing the SCS version of him for the first time with a bizarre solo character, I was nervous. Fear can be a good thing though. I think it helped Alastria here.

The Plan

1) Be cautious. Assess the situation. Set off all traps in the area in Jelly form and then approach
2) Systematically test the resitances, abilities, and behavior of Davaeorn and his allies. Don't take risks doing so.
3) Identify their weaknesses -whatever they may be- and destroy them.

Execution

Alastria buffed with Stoneskins, Polymorph Self, Invisibility, Shield, Blur, Pro Evil, and Mirror Image, She shifted into Jelly form, set off all the traps, and did some recon. Once she was certain the traps were taken care of, she approached.
Posted Image

Davaeorn was flanked by a pair of Battle Horrors- likely scripted to defend him. She opened by testing electricity resistance with the Wand of Lightning.
Posted Image

No dice- the Battle Horrors were immune, and Davaeorn took trivial damage. His buffs went up.

The Battle Horrors immediately attacked Alastria. This seemed like a good time to test whether they could be seperated from him. Again: no dice. They ran back.

With Davaeorn and his pals bunched, it was time to run the Fire test. A long shot, but worth a try. Alastria went human, cast Invisibility again, and flipped back to Jelly. She approached, and discharged the Necklace of Missles. Surprise, surprise: no meaningful effect.

Alastria ran away, but instead of disappearing, she decided to stay in Jelly form and test their defense scripts more thoroughly. After a while, it became clear that Alastria could get the Battle Horrors in her sight range, while being outside of Davaeorn's- allowing her to target them in human form while she couldn't targeted by Davaeorn. That gave Alastria a window to try Blindness on the Battle Horrors.

Success! This was Alastria's first opening. But would the Battle Horrors still follow their defense scripts blind?

No! Alastria now had one alone. And with Davaeorn's spells out of play, she can get out of Jelly and put on the hurt. Vampiric Touch, Chill Touch, and the Wand of Magic Missles did the job.

Ok. One down, one to go. And once the second one is gone, Davaeorn will fall to the Jelly.

Now, up untill this point, Davaeorn hasn't touched his spellbook- he's still fully loaded. It might be worth seeing what he wants to cast. Alastria approached cautiously in human form with a clear Aura, and listened.

"Incantus..." Ok. Jelly time. A Cone of Cold passed over her.

Cone of Cold! That's really good news. The second Battle Horror's days are numbered now- assuming Davaeorn has more of those in his book. Alastria was wiling to bet he did. She got the second Battle Horror's attention, and darted away. She then flipped to, human form, waited for her Aura to clear, and rushed Davaeorn- with the Battle Horror chasing behind.

"Incantus pulcare..." Now! Go Jelly girl!

Good luck fighting a Jelly on your own Davaeorn...

Knowing what I know now, that fight could have been a lot quicker. But I'm glad she gained the knowledge she needed to win without taking any risks. That was a fun fight. On to Baldur's Gate!

I believe it has something to do with the way the game engine handles staggered probabilities, there's a chance of them overlapping when a spell with multiple possible effects (vampiric touch hp boost, prismatic spray colors etc.) is cast, and thus stacking.

Good job on Davaeorn and his horrors, a tough fight with SCS.
