(I should probably be killing these guys more often - they've got a crapload of high quality potions like Oils of Speed).
That's interesting. I always skip that fight, operating under the assumption that it would be a resource drain. I may have to take them down next time to see what they have.

Congrats Aasim! Hopefully Phoe can keep it up in Amn.
Ruzzel and his and of mages and berseker update:
The team is making good progress, along with the occasional death. We tested our new found power vs. the amazons - our opening salvo (3 skull traps and some direct damage) killed 3 of them fast - we were casting web but it didn't land until only one was left - which spelled the survivor's doom of course.
In the same area we battled Narcillus and his jellies - I wonder if he was a bit worried what was coming at him?
He didn't survive more than a round.
His jellies did a bit better though - they killed Stealer fast.
We also tested our new found power vs. the Doomsayer - we opened with 5 magic missile spells, 3 orbs each.
Doomsayer lot tougher than Narcillus though, we had to pump it with magic missiles for a number of rounds.
We also attacked Kirian very similar to how we attacked the Amazons - however Peter, the lone survivor of the first 2 rounds, was brilliant - the we (the mages of the group) were all close, and Peter in a single hit dropped Ruzzel to 1/2 life - Ruzzel ran for his life. Still ignoring Tank, Peter then in one shot slew Blaster. Enough was enough, the remaining mages all fire off their best single target direct damage spells - Peter's rampage came at end. Just shows how vulnerable we are to powerful melee opponents (like we didn't already know that...)
Earlier someone said my party sounded fun - well it wasn't then. But now that we got more spell levels and wands, I am am having fun with them now. If I fail, I think I might restart them even, which I usually don't do for my custom parties (well except my paladins, but paladins are my favorite class so they are just special).

I can't gauge exactly when shield is going to expire - thus I've had a few mages PCs in the past who used shield then in the middle of a battle it expired and now my mage was in serious trouble. Thus I use armor because of duration (5 turns vs. 8 hours). I DO use shield when I know I'm about to be in a difficult fight.

As I’d planned, I next approached the mage-like individual in front of the Ulgoth’s Beard Inn. He asked me to retrieve a cloak that belonged to him. He wasn’t forthcoming that it would involve being teleported to an Ice Island but, sure enough, that's where we wound up & immediately had to kill a Polar Bear. The Island was bitter cold & the wind cut thru our armor to the bone. We found a cave & descended into a complex of tunnels neatly cut into the rock. Passages were 10x10 & the rooms were just empty ‘hall-like’ & irregularly shaped.
Key Event: We started our exploration & immediately stumbled on, & defeated, two Winter Wolves. Then things started getting tough. Imoen was conducting her usual Find/Remove Traps & used her innate Invisibility to scout the hallways & rooms before coming back to give me the results of her reconnaissance. She came upon a mage-like figure (Mage/11). & returned to warn me. I organized us for combat but didn’t want to get caught in the passages or move forward into the room he was in, fearing traps yet undetected. There turned out to be a second mage (Fighter/Mage 8/8). We tried to lure the first into an open room where the bulk of the party was, so when he saw Imoen, he followed but not all the way into the room. Quayle cast a Scroll of Dispel Magic while Branwen cast Silence 15’ Radius right where we stood. He still got a spell off while Imoen simultaneously blasted him w/innate Magic Missiles. The rest of us tried to get to him in the hallway, which we did, but Imoen got her best kill taking him out. Unfortunately, his Confusion spell affected her & Quayle. Quayle just kinda stood there throwing stones but Imoen wandered off down the hall where she’d originally seen the mage she just killed. The second mage hurt her enough to make knock her unconscious & took my ‘eyes & ears’ from me in a very difficult complex, undoubtedly heavily trapped. Having no way off the island, I knew we were in dire straits w/o her. We killed the other mage w/shear brutality as I surrounded him w/my warriors & crushed him. Branwen prayed to Tempest & adjusted her divine spells to carry three Find Traps spells.
We continued, staying left, as is SOP, & after destroying another Winter Wolf, soon entered a cavern full of four Ankheg’s & another mage (Fighter/Thief 9/9). As usual, we drew some of the Ankheg’s away & destroyed them piecemeal before destroying the last of them & their mage.
Moving on, another Mage (Fighter/Mage 8/8) blocked our way in another chamber. It became obvious that all these mages desperately wanted off of this Island. It seems their magical powers of teleportation actually draw them here & they can’t escape. This particular mage said his name, actually I think they all did at least once. He fired Melf’s Acid Arrows & I really can’t remember as I write this what happened except that I know my fighters & warriors pummeled him but not w/o once again losing one of my companions to unconsciousness. This time it was Quayle. Now I have two companions to take to Nalin or another priest because even though they’re unconscious, it will take a Raise Dead or Resurrection Spell, not a Potion of Healing or a similar spell to revive him. Ajantis dropped the killing blade on this mage, scoring his best kill so far.
Now down to just four us, we destroyed another Winter Wolf before confronting a Gnome Mage (type/level u/k). He was a handful but we were finally able to bring him down. Immediately around the corner we battled & grabbed the pelts from three more Winter Wolves.
We found a lower level, a complex of caves, unfinished as they were on the previous level. This level contained nine Winter Wolves in various caverns throughout. (Note: I always opt for Ice island restoration in my modifications but this is the first time it was there to explore).
We finished up our adventure here when yet again we came across a hostile mage (Fighter/Mage 8/8/) in these caverns who was accompanied by three Mountain Bears. Once again, the four of us took them out w/ease & then cleaned out the rest of the caves bagging three more Winter Wolves. Once we were thru we ascended & were teleported back to Ulgoth’s Beard where we wasted no time leaving for Beregost to purchase Raise Dead for our companions, sell our loot, e.g. Winter Wolf pelts, @ High Hedge & identify some treasure, especially a Robe of the Evil Arch-Magi. We returned to Ulgoth’s Beard & gave the mage his cloak to little fanfare or gratitude.

Understood. Armor is a respectable choice. Some people are Armor fans, others like Shield. Those who choose Armor invariably do so for the duration.
Your approach makes sense: Armor to clear an entire area of weaker foes, Shield for difficult battles.
Does Shield stop Magic Missles in your install? It should, but IIRC it may not without the Fixpack.

A.

Yuppers. The Archmagi robes obsolete Armor. The robes set base AC to 5, Armor to 6.
Shield remains relevant though since it sets base AC to 4, confers an additional -2 adjustment against missle attacks, and blocks Magic Missiles.
Arcadia, who now has over 5mil experience, still uses Shield from time to time. She'll allocate a L1 to Shield if she expects Spirit Armor to expire before her next rest. Shield is one of my favorite L1s.

Russell the gnomish Illusionist Update
Traveling with: Tank (half-orc berserker), Stealer (half-elf thief/mage), Disabler (human mage), Blaster (human mage), Exploder (human mage)
Team just finished ice isle, and is now level 7. The ice isle seems extremely dangerous, the onlly safe way I can figure to do this area is protection from magic scroll on a tank and let him solo it - I gave him the frost boots to help with winter wolves - can you guys do it without doing that? Of course, we have one mage who doesn't know any level 7 spells and might not for a long time - I might need to delve into Durlag's and see if I can find any level 4 scrolls. Bought all the ones at Ulgoth's Beard.
The run has not been without its mishaps. Grond0 might be able to get 5+ mages thru BG 1 without a death, but I sure can't! A good example is a war dog ambush - at our levels should have been simple, however, in this case, most of us were very low on spells, and some of had none! So Disabler thought she would do a scorcher from wand, and try to help out Stealer with her war dog - yes Disabler killed the war dog, but her pathing was a bit off and also killed Stealer!
Billy and his buddies were another good example. I can NEVER remember exactly where they are, so often stumble into them. Poor Disabler was the first person seen, and she was killed instantly with arrows. We did kill Billy and pals, skull traps and magic missiles mostly maybe a flame arrow too.
I was better prepared in other battles, such as Molkar. I did forget to enrage Tank, so he got stunned, guessing by chromatic orb. But the mages did fine, we cast quite a few direct damage spells, almost our entire spell books but we got the job done without suffering any loss our self. We also did the Firewine Ruins nearby - fortunately Ruzzel did not flub the cloudkill scroll (but he did flub the fireball spell - should have given to anyone else, they don't get a penalty like he does).
Not much to say about the next screenshot, except Jemby and her friends faced the wrath of our party - trying to rob 5 mages is rarely a good idea.
We don't have many extra areas left, we will have to work on the main quest line soon. We'll probably join the bandit camp when we get to that - we only attack it if we need Khosann's full plate, but we don't have a 2nd fighter. I probably will have my mages use shield in Tazok's tent, don't want them to get poisoned by Brikt.

Makes sense. One or both of the fixes may be applied during the EasyTutu procedure. I've never used EasyTutu.
Sans fixs, the issues were: 1) the Shield Amulet did not protect against Magic Missiles as it should, per description, 2) Shield was not protecting from Magic Missles cast by traps.

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief - take 12/13 (update 5)
Day 21 (22 Mirtul), Gnoll Stronghold
Dyara wanted Dynaheir and Minsc to wait for her while she explored the caves below the gnoll stronghold but they didn't liked to stay there any longer and left for the Friendly Arm Inn. So Dyara was on her own again. The caves were inhabited by xvarts - until Dyara came along. In one of the caves she found a large and very heavy tome she was unable to read however.
Day 22 (23 Mirtul)
Following the river Dyara travelled north. She was near a bridge across the river when she was attacked by a large polar bear. It was a hard fight until the bear went down and it cost Dyara four healing potions to regain her health. When she crossed the bridge she got some boots as reward for killing the bear. On the left riverside Dyara continued her journey north. It wasn't long until she became ambushed by Neville and his gang. All archer but one were send to sleep, that Neville however proved to be far more powerful than Dyara thought. Just wearing one of her low-cut flimsy mage dresses (and the armor spell didn't helped much) Dyara wasn't in a position to win a melee-fight (at least not without wasting all her healing potions). So she used one charge of her wand of frost and ran away then. With Neville on her heels Dyara went south, crossed the bridge again only to bump into some ogre. She was able to escape the ogre, went over the river again with Neville still following her. Being able to gather some distance from her pursuer gave her the opportunity to use the wand of lightning to kill Neville finally. The hobgoblins archers were still asleep so there were no problems to dispatch them.
Dyara then wanted to go across the river using the northern bridge but still somewhat exhausted from the earlier fights (and all the running around) and therefore a little bit unobservant she didn't saw the two ogre berserkers and the two hobgoblin archers standing on that very bridge. Again she ran away, got poisened by an arrow, the two ogre berserkers following her. Using her remaining charges of the wand of lighning Dyara killed one ogre and the other she killed with the bow after bringing him near death using the wand of frost. When looking for the two archers she got poisened again but killed them quickly then. Some other healing potions got wasted when Dyara agreed to help the paladin laurel to fight some gibberlings. After killing an ogre who wanted to make her his dessert and with only two healing potions left she decided to return to Nashkell.
On her way Dyara came across a xvart village. While she had no ill intentions she was attacked and had to kill their leader Nexlit and their guardian Ursa to cross the village.
Day 23 (24 Mirtul)
Back in Nashkell Dyara got the tome (plus some other items) identified. After selling a lot of stuff and after buying the remaining healing potions from the temple Dyara had round about 20,000 gold (she did not sell everything in case she had to equip a companion). When resting in the inn Dyara had a bad dream about Mulahey and got her second 'lay on hands' ability.
We then had a very long discussion about where to go next. Dyara longed for going to that tower she had seen a week ago but I wasn't sure about that.
"Why not go to one of these nice wilderness areas we haven't been yet?"
"Boring!"
"Or perhaps firewine bridge! There's a lot of talking about..."
"Boring!"
"Also we've never been to the north of..."
"Boring, boring, boring", she said stumping her foot on the ground.
"Look, it's not that I don't want you to go there, it's just too dangerous."
"So you don't trust me?"
"No, it's not you I don't trust, it's your equipement. For example that helmet you're wearing..."
"What's wrong with it? If you don't like it I can take if off."
"No, no, still better than nothing. It's just that any hobgoblin wears that model. And hobgoblins don't go to Durlag's Tower, you know. And that bow of yours ..."
"Well, YOU made me to have strength 17 only so I couldn't use one of the many composite bows I've found!"
"You said you wanted to look pretty... but what about your level three spells?" I knew while Dyara had a level three spell slot she hadn't any level three spells in her book, so that would give her something to think about (I thought).
"I'm sure I will find lots of scrolls in that tower", she countered.
"Only if death doesn't find you first!"
"Ah, that's so typical! Everytime you run out ouf points you come up with that killer argument!"
It went on for a while but finally we came to an agreement: once every item slot is filled with a magical item we will go to Durlag's Tower (and hope for the best).
Day 24 (25 Mirtul)
In the morning Dyara went to Fisherman's Lake. She helped Drizzt do fight some gnolls. A group of bandits wanted all her money but protected by 'shield' and 'resist fear' they didn't caused much trouble. After fighting some half-ogres she went further west.
Day 25 (26 Mirtul)
At the Archaeological Site she helped Charleston Nib but didn't take the idol (and didn't fight the doomsayer). After that she took Brage to the temple of Helm in Nashkell and rested in the inn.
Day 26 (27 Mirtul)
On the North Nashkell Road Dyara met David Jansen who was with two 'Ogre Ladies' who wanted him as her dinner. Somehow the gnome managed to escape so the two ladies threw their glance at Dyara... bad idea. Further north at the ruined house Dyara met with Left again (after going through all her dresses for about an hour to find a fitting one).
In Beregost Dyara met with officer Val and 'sold' her around 20 bandit scalps. From Bjornim she got a shield for killing the half-ogres. Dyara then brought a sample of the contamined ore to Taerom Fuiruim. After that she got hired by the bard Garrick to help Lady Silke. However after talking to this Silke Dyara canceled the contract. Dyara had mixed-up 'Mage Dress of Fire Resistance' and 'Mage Dress of Electrical Resistance' unfortunately, also she had forgotten to put on the 'Talos Gift' boots. Therefore she got hurt a little bit in the upcoming fight but nothing too serious. As Taerom Fuiruim had suggested Dyara left Beregost for High Hedge for showing the mage Thalantyr the misterious liquid (and for looking through all the nices dresses he sells in his shop).
Dyara got Thalantyr to sell her the nice 'Dress of the good Archmagi' for only ~13,000 gold (you can't say no to such a special offer). While there she also bought a 'Fragment of Enlightenment' (ioun stone that adds +20 to Lore), some potions and a level three spell (Minor Spell Deflection). That put her down to ~6,500 gold.
Day 27 (28 Mirtul)
From High Hedge Dyara went south to Red Canyons. Zargal and friends were put to sleep and killed then. A short time later she found the evil cleric Bassilus. Dyara made his undead army collapse, she moved back to hide in the shadows, protected by a potion of freedom she opened the fight with a backstab, Bassilus tried to catch her with some hold spells followed by entangle - only to entangle himself. Dyara then shot him down using her longbow.
Day 28 (29 Mirtul)
Very tired now and out of spells Dyara rested at the Lighthouse area. She got her palm read by the mage Arkushule. The woman saw something in Dyara's past but dared not to tell her for whatever reason. Dyara begged her but the mage just ran away...
Near the beach some hostile sirenes attacked Dyara. As an elf she was (90%) immune to their charm spells so fighting them wasn't difficult. In front of Black Alaric's cave Dyara met Sil, the leader of the sirenes. The sirenes let her pass, also for being such a nice person Dyara got rewarded with a 'Cloak of Ice Protection'.
Then Dyara sneaked into the cave. She sensed there might be some traps but she wasn't able to find them (perhaps because I was looking at the wrong places, perhaps because find trap of 60 was too low). Just to be save Dyara quaffed a 'potion of power' (the only find trap boosting potion she had) and then she was able to find the traps. Protected by the 'Destroyer of Hills' belt and by a 'potion of absorption' Dyara had no difficults to fight the three flesh golems using stealth, melee attacks and some 'arrows of biting'. Dyara found the 'Manual of bodily health' and read it right away. Also she got rewarded with her final fighter level.
Dyara: 71563 XP, 438 kills, Vampiric Wolf, F(6)/M(5)/T(6), 52(63) HP
To make Safana join her for the second time Dyara used the gender changing belt. Safana seemed to be impressed and thus Dyara remained as a man for a while. A short time later the pair ran into a group of hobgoblin elites. The half of them got send to sleep by a sleep spell. To further impress Safana Dyara plunged into the fight with a battle cry.
Dyara got hurt a lot but when all the hobgoblins were dead she felt very manly. I however decided it's about time to stop that nonsens and so I made her drink from 'Mirrorshade's Curse-Removing Soap' and the cursed belt felt to the ground bringing back Dyara's female shape.
