Makes sense. One or both of the fixes may be applied during the EasyTutu procedure. I've never used EasyTutu.

Sans fixs, the issues were: 1) the Shield Amulet did not protect against Magic Missiles as it should, per description, 2) Shield was not protecting from Magic Missles cast by traps.

Oh, the amulet doesn't protect me against magic missile traps. So what I do is take it...then use some blue potions. : )

Nice update, Dyara! Thanks. Your dialog about your F/M wanting to go to Durlag's was quite fun.

Yes. It's an easy enough issue to work around.

I was just curious about the mechanics in your install.

The Arcane Army (update 4)

Parsley used shield and ghost armour to lead the way through the Nashkel mine - with the result that there was little damage taken even with virtually no spell use.  In the cave Mulahey failed to find his way out of a sticky situation.

Parsley also learned web from Mulahey's stock which meant that the amazons' chances of survival were reduced from nil to, erm, nil.  Nimbul both lived and died by magic missiles.  I didn't bother avoiding the main road on the way to Beregost this time and got a few bandits in an ambush; the initial group with gibberlings died fairly easily, but more turning up while the Army were cutting off some scalps were more of a problem and Pepper was taken down to about 12 HPs (in danger from a critical) by the time they finished those off.

After resting up, Tranzig became the latest victim of a magic missile storm.  Before going on to the Bandit Camp the Army descended upon High Hedge again and splurged out on a load of spells.  Again they were pretty successful with learning those - including all 3 skull traps :D.

After hitching a lift to the Camp with Teven, Tazok attacked.  I aimed to keep him roughly in the centre of the characters while shooting him until he tried to give up.  That proximity would probably have allowed 2 rounds of spells, but only a single volley of magic missiles was needed.  The Camp were largely subdued with sleep + missile fire with Parsley acting as target protected again by ghost armour and shield.  She did a good job at that - finally taking a single critical hit with only 2 bandits remaining.  Although the Army had mainly memorised sleeps, they had a single magic missile each - which was enough for Taugosz.

Inside the tent Raemon was a bit slow to notice them - which spelled bad news for Venkt.  Hakt and Raemon were scared by a horror, but the former managed to squeeze off a few shots while running until brought down by missile fire - one of those poisoned Pepper, but he survived comfortably anyway.  After resting, Parsely boosted her HPs with a few LMDs, but her mirrors did their job against the lightning trap anyway.

In Gullykin Rosemary tried using a strength spell to break open a container with a +1 sling, but without success.  However, the group did punish Jenkal and then go through the back door into the ruins.  The ogre mage was another magic missile sucker while Lendarn donated his equipment after getting stuck in webs.  Two of his scrolls were fluffed, but Parsely became the second member of the Army to know cloudkill - not that that will be of any use for quite some time to come!

In the first Cloakwood area they helped Aldeth with another volley of magic missiles.  Clearing the rest of the area was just enough to get everyone to level 6.  In the second area Rosemary tripped all the web traps while invisible before the Army went round sorting out the spiders.  There was a slight movement error at one point that resulted in Sage getting poisoned by a phase spider.  The Army did have a green scroll available anyway, but she was successfully able to sleep it off at the second attempt (after quickly killing the giant spider that ambushed them first time around).  In Centeol's nest a mixture of skull traps, horror and sleep looked like it would allow a clean kill.  However. a sword spider that had been scared and just running around decided suddenly to latch onto Parsley and hurt her quite badly before everything was finally brought under control.

With everyone short of missiles they briefly returned to the FAI and have just started clearing the 3rd Cloakwood area.

Stats:
Rosemary, mage 6, 27 HPs, 1 death, 187 kills
Parsley, mage 6, 34 HPs, 0 deaths, 118 kills
Thyme, mage 6, 29 HPs, 0 deaths, 103 kills
Sage (PC), mage 6, 40 HPs (incl. 12 from cat), 83 kills
Nutmeg, mage 6, 28 HPs, 0 deaths, 98 kills
Pepper, mage 6, 29 HPs, 0 deaths, 98 kills

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief - take 12/13 (update 6)

Day 29 (30 Mirtul)

Following the coast line Dyara and Safana went north to Shipwreck's Coast. After fighting wolfes and a dread wolf they suddenly stumbled upon three sirines. Dyara urged Safana to retreat because she knew the sirines would easily charm the thief. After successfully fighting some sirines the other day Dyara felt save from the sirines' spells. Using hide in shadows and backstab tactic Dyara managed to kill one but then a second sirine hit her with a biting arrow. Instead of curing the posion first Dyara herself hit the sirine with the very same arrow. Dyara was about to finish the sirine using her long sword when suddenly the sirine touched Dyara's skin causing confusion and feeblemindedness on her. Poisened, confused and feeble-minded, slowly (the sirine had a hard time to hit Dyara and even then she did only one damage) running out of hitpoints ... death itself seemed the only salavation possible.

55-Sirenes-1.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

But when everything seemed lost, suddenly out of nowhere Safana appeared to save Dyara from certain death. So I thought at least but while Safana battered the sirine as best as she could, she wasn't able to score any hits with her ordinary ninjatō. But Safana wasn't blessed with high intelligence for nothing, she switched to darts (she still had three of them), moved back a little bit and killed the sirine on her first try.

Unfortunately as if it hadn't been bad enough already the whole situation became even worth. While running towards Dyara Safana had drawn the attention of a third sirine (and that one still had all her biting arrows and was uninjured). Safana tried to shake Dyara, tried to wake her up somehow, even slaped her in the face. But to no avail, Dyara just stood there staring ahead with mindless gaze.

55-Sirenes-3.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

Sacrificing herself Safana tried to lure the sirine away from Dyara. It seemed to have worked, because the sirine shot all her arrows at Safana hitting her at least once and poisoning her. Safana quaffed the one healing potion she had to counter the hitpoint loss caused by the poison. Down to three hitpoints the poison wear off. Unfortunately the sirine lost interest in Safana and turned on Dyara again.

Same situation as before - with some important differences however: the sirine was uninjured instead of near death already, Safana had no darts left and Dyara had less hitpoints left.

To improve her chances to hit and to increase the damage Safana tried to hide in the shadows (that isn't exactly her speciality) and backstab the sirine. With her low strength Safana couldn't do much damage but at least she was able to hit the sirine. In the meanwhile Dyara was down to two hitpoints only (hurry up, Safana!). No time left for another 'hide in shadows and backstab' round desperately Safana battered the sirine and with some luck she was able to land the final hit.

55-Sirenes-4.jpg?raw=1&dl=0

Eventually confusion and feeblemindedness wear off, Dyara needed some time to understand what had happened and how close to death she had been. The two girls then healed their wounds.

Dyara will never forget what Safana had done today (and I will never again say anything bad about Safana).

This is reminding me that I should have Arcadia cast Find Familiar in BG2 and then deduct the 6HP she received from FF in BG1.

In my install, familiars confer 6hp in BG1. Upon import to BG2, the familiar is missing from the inventory, but the hitpoints remain. I had opted not to cast in BG2, but that effectively cheats her out of 6HP.

Ruzzel the illusionist and his band of mages and berserker update

Ruzzel and team continue to make progress. Every now and then we get in ambushes when low spells. Fortunately, now we have wands - scorcher, lightning and monster summoning kept up in on piece in this ambush.

We joined the bandit camp. We buffed to the max for the tent, but it may have been unnecessary. A massive volley of magic missiles headed to Venkt - he didn't survive.

Baldr367_zps5uxqp7kx.png

The party is still level 7. Not counting Wolf Island, the only places left are Pelvale, Durlag's and Cloakwood. We think we can find more spells in lower levels in Durlag's so going to take a look there. We need a ton of experience to level 8 (about 20,000 EACH party member). We also finally pick-pocketed Dusha's free action ring - with all the ghasts in Durlag's, will help Tank a lot. Here's my party stats:

EDIT: No one knows fireball - we flubbed two attempts at it (two different mages) - fortunately skull trap is servicable.

Tank, berserker 7, 69 HP, 780 kills

Stealer, mage 5/thief 6, 31 HP, 200 kills, favorite spell: blindness (I don't know why the game says this, as all her level 1 slots are identify, perhaps it's the only spell she has cast in combat)

Ruzzel, illusionist 7, 39 HP, 101 kills, favorite spell: sleep

Disabler, mage 7, 32 HP, 187 kills, favorite spell: sleep

Blaster, mage 7, 40 HP, 150 kills, favorite spell: magic missile

Exploder, mage 7, 31 HP, 157 kills, favorite spell: magic missile

We buffed to the max for the tent, but it may have been unnecessary.

You may find that true throughout much of the game, given the amount of firepower you'll have and that you'll be playing vanilla.

Later in the adventure you'll be able to do things like walk into areas invisible with Chain Contingency: See Enemy- Wilting x3 set and wipe stuff out without ever being seen. Before then, simultaneous Sequencers and Triggers will let you win fights in a fraction of a round.

I'd encourage you to still experiment with defensive magic though. A lot of players become overly impressed with the quick knockout potential of arcane characters and consequently never really explore defensive spells. But as the gaming context becomes more challenging, the blue spells become more important. Those who focus on the red spells can end up having trouble once difficulty is ramped up, especially via tactical mods.

Best,

A.

Yep, i had already seen me writing the final update.

That's true unfortunately. However these kind of situations are what makes playing fun and thrilling. Of course if Dyara had died there I would have scolded myself for being so stupid :D.

Agreed. If my characters have to roll to save against a disabling spells once during the entire adventure, I consider that a major, major misstep- even if my character emerges unscathed. Most of the regulars here have a similar view.

The Greenstone Amulet and Free Action (via potion, item, or spell) will cover most of your save or else needs. Save buff items/potions/spells, specific protection spells, Potions of Magic Blocking, and Protection from Magic Scrolls are other options.

Best,

A.

Team just finished ice isle, and is now level 7. The ice isle seems extremely dangerous, the onlly safe way I can figure to do this area is protection from magic scroll on a tank and let him solo it - I gave him the frost boots to help with winter wolves - can you guys do it without doing that? Of course, we have one mage who doesn't know any level 7 spells and might not for a long time - I might need to delve into Durlag's and see if I can find any level 4 scrolls. Bought all the ones at Ulgoth's Beard.

One of two benefits gained by being a 'completionist' as Blackraven calls it, is that Durlag's Tower is in my rearview mirror by the time I get to Ice Island. When I enter Ulgoth's Beard I see Ike & Hurgan Stoneblade before I encounter Shandalar. I usally take whichever quest is offered first so Durlag's Tower precedes Ice Island. The second benefit is that by the time I've cleared all of the TotSC adventures through to those associated w/Ulgoth's Beard up to & including Durlag's Tower, I haven't a PC/NPC less than Level 8. Even if I lose an NPC & select a replacement they begin at least @ Level 8.

For a 'hard-core' player like you Grond0, that might make things too easy, but the additional experience playing thru all of TotSC, including Durlag's Tower, makes Ice Island a less than formidable encounter between Durlag's Tower & Balduran Isles. Yeah, I took a couple of losses last time thru but that is really for lack of Potions of Magic Protection/Blocking, Scrolls of the same etc that are a direct result of the Hard-Times mod which makes these scarce & not readily available in stores either, so we're protected by our lower saving throws & a few magical items, e.g. Kiel's Helm, etc.

Lots of great stuff to read ... I guess it's now two quarters making notes and bringing them in a readable form, one quarter reading here and only the remaining quarter for actually playing the game :D.

So very true!

Understood. I got the sense that you intended to explore defensive magic, but I thought I'd provide a little encouragement, nonetheless.

Since the red spells are so devastating -and the feedback can be so impressive- players often end up placing more and more emphasis on them. What happens though is that they get stuck at a local optimum. They end up loading their books with mostly red, and then only when they run into difficulty do they start sparingly adding in more blues. But one or two extra blues often does little and so they revert back to a red heavy book.

What they'd need to do is come up with a comprehensive defensive strategy, using complementary blue spells, and radically reconfigure their book. But prior experience hasn't put them in a position to see that, since they've gotten more positive feedback from red.

It's an easy trap to fall into. A lot of casters never get past the stage where throughout SoA they're hiding behind summons, blasting away, running no buffs other than Stoneskins and then later, in ToB, hanging back while sending PIs up ahead with a Wizard Eye to execute Time Stop->Improved Alacrity->Book Dump. That works brilliantly, up to a point, but only up to a point- especially if tactical mods are on the horizon. It's better to explore all the spell schools at the start.

Sorry if I'm getting all soap-boxy. I'm just excited to see some casting. I've also felt that the quality of play in our community is excellent, but that we could benefit from further leveraging the spell system. I'm glad to see some exploration. Have fun!

Best,

A.

Ruzzel the illusionist with his band of mages and berserker update

Just a brief note. The party is now level 8. We need 40,000 each to get level 9. Thus we will try to do everything we can. If I get to chapter 7 and still short, I might even attempt Wolfwere Isle (I have never completed that no-reload). We currently battling our way through the Cloakwood. We do engage the ambushes for experience, but it's dicey. It would help if everyone knew mirror image but they don't, so doing the best we can. For the 1st time ever, I cleared the lower level of Durlag's (the level with Pride and pals, though I didn't do the puzzle portions). I did in fact find some spells I was missing, along with massive amounts of ammo - our gold is very good now too, though am sure that will go down quite a bit once we can access the spells at Sorcerous Sundries.

BG1. Episode 1: Eren the assassin

So here he is, my new hero:

Schermafdruk%202015-03-15%2017.28.23_zps

Little background, not to deter from the action:
Eren is not too bright, not stupid either. He is very goodlooking for his kind and wields a long sword like the best of them. He also uses
darts and learned a little poisonbrewing when bored.

Btw im using full SCS of course, IWD hit points. I want to dual into fighter once I hit bg2, IF I hit bg2... with tweaks.

Story:
Eren the fair, so named for his strangely appealing half elf half orc appearance (http://www.dandwiki....Orc_(3.5e_Race)), was somehow greatly troubled by the chanting of the mages outside of candlekeep, but that that didnt keep him from meeting up with his father. After the dear man was murdered, Eren felt a bloodlust he never felt before, and decided he should take revenge. The only way possible, was to make a name for himself, collect gold, and powerful allies...

He dropped Imoen at the inn, as she was way to vulnerable to take with him. He could not find 'allies' at the inn, but took on a bunch of quests and sold some stuff. Afterwards he wandered of the beaten path looking for his fortune, killing both a pesky dryad and some basilisks with the help of a ghoul.

I tried to recruit Dorn but right after his battle, lightning struck and chunked him. I couldnt for the life of me guess how he died... but then I noticed it was raining/storming heavily. So he actually got struck by a lightning bolt from the sky eh... So ehmmm... the gods got angry with you?... Worshipping demons not such a good idea after all?  :(

That's what I do as well - I don't usually fight Pride & pals, just get the loot (MS wand is great vs Sarevok) and get out of there. The levels below hold even greater treasures (iirc, you can find 10+ Oils of Speed - or Haste scrolls, can't remember which), massive gold ammounts, all the potions you'll ever need etc. It's a risky endeavor, not one I take on often.
