Davaeorn has always scared me a bit, though in Vanilla he really spends too much time teleporting and not a lot doing stuff. Fields of the Dead made him quite interesting, with a habit of summoning monsters, but I can bet in SCS he's a damn pain.

Exactly. In order to fix that I made Vampiric Touch drain a fixed amount of hp per lvl (3 points every 2 caster lvls). On other spells it's not a huge problem (e.g. SR's Prismatic Spray still has a very small chance of more than two rays hitting at the same time - description is fixed though), but vanilla's Vampiric Touch was indeed broken and I couldn't fix it in any other way.polytope wrote...
I believe it has something to do with the way the game engine handles staggered probabilities, there's a chance of them overlapping when a spell with multiple possible effects (vampiric touch hp boost, prismatic spray colors etc.) is cast, and thus stacking.Alesia_BH wrote...
That much I understand, but at Level 8 it should do 4d6 and add a commensurate number of hitpoints. It added 63 hitpoints.
This isn't the first time I've observed that. It usually works fine, but every now and then it adds way too many hitpoints. Others have noticed the issue as well (it's mentioned in XYX's Spell Guide). I'm just wondering if anyone knows what's going on there mechanically.
P.S I could explain why VT cannot be made as a random hp gain whereas PS can still work with overlapping % based opcodes, but it's a boring discussion.

Introducing Lord.
Elf, F/M/T, Chaotic Neutral.
Str: 18/81
Dex: 19
Con: 17
Int: 18
Wis: 7
Cha: 8
Core difficulty.
I'll be playing solo (plus familiar).
No mods other than tutu.
Allowing myself a bag of holding, but otherwise no cheating or exploits.
class choice comes from never having actually played an f/m/t and also the fact that I'd like to give myself a chance! I am by no means as experienced as a lot of the players on here.
Shall be role-playing; avoiding metagaming knowledge. Also playing to my alignment.
Fortunately, chaotic neutral allows me to follow whatever whim I fancy
So, after leaving Candlekeep & abandonning his childhood friend in the wilderness, Lord sets off to gain some experience monster hunting. He makes use of his 'stealth-cat' familiar to scout areas & also to kite some creatures where necessary, allowing Lord to liberally pepper their hides with arrows.
On reaching the Friendly Arm Inn, Lord is accosted by a 'would-be assassin'. After fleeing in terror and eating a magic missile, Lord gulps down a potion, casts a shield, and preceeds to cut the assassin down.
Once inside the inn and having fully rested, Lord decides to see what shiny goods people have left lying around. Sadly the looting spree is cut short on the 2nd floor, when some do-gooder notices Lord riffling through his pockets. After failing to bribe the guards that are summonned, Lord also agrees that he has outstayed his welcome and promptly flees from the Inn and starts to journey south.

(hopefully posted that pic properly! taken after leaving the inn) More soon...

Thanks for your comments guys! It wouldn't have seemed as elegant had you seen the full fight: there was a lot more fretting and futzing in the real thing. I was pleased with how it went overall though. Alastria's alive, Davaeorn isn't
Best,

interesting. Thanks!. Is there anyway to keep the damage the same, but have it add a fixed number of Hitpoints?

Yes you can, the spell inflicts magic dmg via 'damage' opcode (12) and then grants the caster hp with 'maximum hp modifier' opcode (18), thus you can have it deal xd6 dmg and then grant +y hp. It would be a really strange solution though, as you would end up with a spell that could even give you more hp than the amount of dmg inflicted.Alesia_BH wrote...

Understood.
But it would be less strange than getting ~60 hitpoints on occasion and would leave the functional side of the spell intact. I'm contemplating modding it that way for for this run. I may opt for your approach though. I'm not sure.
I'm inclined to do something: 60 Hitpoints is a big deal in BG1.
Thanks again!

Phew! Alastria has made it back through the Cloakwood. Invisibility held the Giant Spiders and their Webs at bay. She had a few enjoyable minor encouters on the way back.
Meleed the Wyverns in Flind form.

Killed the Area 2 Spiders in Spider form: with Poison (that was amusing...)

Best,
A.
NW: Alastria now has a Bag of Holding- discovered in Davaeorn's quarters (mod).
NWII: She is approaching the EXP cap. I'm not sure what to do about that. I've always been inclined to leave the cap on in BG1 (especailly with solo characters) but I feel she needs Spell Immunity. Haven't decided.

Alastria has hit the EXP cap. I've decided to leave it in place. If she reaches a point where I don't think she can make it on her own, I'll have her recruit some allies. I'd rather take that approach than play capless.
She's currently taking care of some business in Beregost (recharging her Necklace and Amulet). She'll arrive in Baldur's Gate tomorrow.
Best,
A.
NW: Progress may be a bit slower in upcoming days since I have some stuff to take care of in my other life.

Alastria's run has ended.
When I found out I was going to have work to do in the upcoming days, I got at little over-eager to move her on to the Iron Throne fiight. She couldn't afford Invisibility potions before the fight (which she needs in order to go disappear before flipping and rebuffing) and while I could have had her raise the gold, I rushed her in, hoping she'd be able to use speed to create the space she needed to flip and rebuff.
Unfortunately, the Boots of Speed she was relying on didn't work (I have no idea why). She was Critical Hit and dropped just after flipping.
So, that's the end for her. I'm not sure what I'll do next. But I'll probably wait until my work is done- I don't want to play rushed again.

In this situation it's easy to kiss goodbye to a lot of valuable equipment (I know I've done it in other locations but not for a couple of years now). In a no-reload it pays to think of options - the answer here was to stuff it all into one of the nearby chests so nothing is lost other than round 1 of the battle.Alesia_BH wrote...
Alisa limped out of the mines carrying the bodies of her comrades and as much of their gear as she could. She left a lot behind.
Edit - oh, and just got to the last post. Sorry to see the run end that way.

A small note on my game - Even though it doesn't really affect gameplay, I forgot to mention that I'm also using the widescreen mod.
On with... The Adventures of Lord and Stealth-Cat!
Having been chased out of the Friendly Arm Inn, a disgruntled Lord makes his way south. After spending an afternoon culling the local wildlife, he and his familiar 'Stealth-Cat', find themselves on the outskirts of Beregost.
The pair blunder about town and take in the local sights. Lord comes across a young bard that is offering a decent amount of gold for a seemingly innane task. On meeting the bard's mistress, Silke, Lord concludes that she is irrational and beyond reason. Predictably, Silke turns on our plucky protagonist, and so begins one of the larger brawls (probably) that the town has seen in recent years.
Lord is fortunate enough to resist her first spell and then interrupt subsequent casts. In his splint-mail armour he is unable to cast any defensive spells of his own. Mortally wounded, Silke flees into a nearby tavern, the Red Sheaf. Sure of victory, Lord makes chase but comes to find that the tables of fate are against him. Before he is able to reach Silke, he is approached by the second assassin this week.
The fight falls back out into the street as Lord escapes the tavern. As Silke and the assassin give chase, Lord manages to put the mage down with an arrow. Enter Stealth-Cat, who emerges from the shadows & dons the guise of 'Regular-Cat'. Understandably confused by the sudden appearance of a cat in his path, the assassin Karlat, forgets all about Lord & takes up chase of his new target. By now of course, Lord and his familiar have developed a solid working relationship:

Stealth-Cat playing kite.
In the following days, Lord takes his time to explore the wilderness surrounding Beregost and learns of troubles brewing further to the south. Although certain that he would remain much safer not getting involved, he finds himself compelled to journey south and investigate.

Hard luck Alesia - I'm sure you'll make it next time. Did you have the ring of free action on you - that tends to prevent the boots of speed from working (although depending on your setup you might be able to get both working by equipping them in the right order)?Alesia_BH wrote...

I feel bad about getting her killed now.
I had been staying up late the last few nights playing, and when I found out I was going to have stuff to take care of, I took some sleeping pills to normalize my sleep schedule. Unfortunately, I decided to play just a bit more after doing so.
Her last battle could have been titled:
Alastria v. The Iron Throne (Or Why You Shouldn't Operate Transmuting Sorceresses Under the Influence)

No. She wasn't running Free Action. The boots are just duds: they're broken. I hadn't noticed before because she was relying on her forms for speed and wearing the Boots of Grounding.
And before it comes up: no. I'm not inclined to view this as a bug and continue. It was my judgement that killed her- not the boots.
Good luck everyone. Stay awake and alert!
Best,
A.
Btw. If there is interest, I may start a BG1 Campfire Thread and continue Alastria's journey there. Let me know.

Lord and his familiar reach the Village of Nashkel. Now a level 4 fighter, level 3 mage & level 4 thief, he has little trouble dispatching Neira, the third bounty hunter he has come across on his travels. Unprepared in his armour, Lord is once again unable to cast any of his own spells. Fortunately his prowess with the long sword is now enough to interrupt each & every one of Neira's spell casts.
The next morning Lord explores the town and surrounding areas. He is mistaken for a bounty hunter named Greywolf and happily accepts gold that Greywolf is owed. Approached by the mayor of the village, Lord is tasked with investigating the problems in the Nashkel mines.
Stealth cat scores his first kill:

Apparently he can backstab... Good for him.
On exploring the lands around the Nashkel mines, Lord and his familiar stumble upon an artist crafting a face into the cliffside. On deciding that he now like 'art', Lord agrees to protect the artist until his work is finished. Lo and behold, the bounty hunter Greywolf approaches. Furious that our hero claimed one of his own bounties, Greywolf attacks. Lord protects himself with a reflected image & blur before battling it out with the bounty hunter. The battle won and a new, magical long sword obtained, a severely wounded Lord makes his way back to Nashkel to rest and resupply.
Back in the village, Lord encounters a ranger named Minsc. Fancying himself as a bit of a hero today, Lord agrees to rescue the ranger's friend but on the condition that Minsc doesn't come with him.

So: I'm considering my options at this point. Here's what I've come up with.
1) Run Alastria back through and give her another chance at No Reloading BG.
2) An RPed Trilogy No Reload with my Bounty Hunter, Alesia (she has No Reloaded BG1 and BG2 but not in a single run).
3) A Trilogy attempt with a Gnome M/C- using Arlene's personality.
4) A Trilogy attempt with Arlene (C/T).
5) A completely new character (suggestions welcome).
If anyone has a preference, let me know.
Best,
A.
And good luck to all the actives. I hope to join you again soon!

Tiny update.
I'm finding it near impossible to play without my own knowledge of "what comes next". As an example, when I come across the sirene on the coast in the area south of Candlekeep, I already know not to speak to her. Seeing as it'd be silly to just let Lord die in such a trivial manner, I'll just attack her from range if and when I encounter her.
With that out of the way, on with the story (tiny update as I said)!

After coming too close to a righteous butt-kicking, Lord decides to spend some time exploring the Sword Coast before dealing with the problems in Nashkel.
Mission plan:
- Be able to honestly descibe himself as 'Full plate & packing steel'
- Improve one's spellbook
Larger update on the way later this evening hopefully!
