Thanks Alesia, I regret nothing (not even putting Euphonia at risk, which was a conscious decision), and might well try again on my next party run. I didn't know very well what to expect of the SCS chessboard fight, but I know now it's hard... The chesspieces are all quite high level (Rooks as lvl 13 Fighters, King as a lvl 9/7 Fighter/Conjurer, etc.)

I'm undecided yet as to my next playthrough. I've found a female portrait I like a lot. She could be a human (or maybe human-looking Half-Elf) Mage, Sorcerer, unkitted Bard or Gypsy as per Song & Silence, a Heartwarder of Sune as per Divine Remix, or a Swashbuckler. In other words, she has a good sense of style.  B)

I'm tending toward Bard or human Swashbuckler or Heartwarder so that she can dual into Mage.

Hard luck Blackraven - I agree the chessboard is a pretty nasty fight unless you pre-empt the opposition's actions.

Eren Final Update

As things were going, Eren wasnt long for this world.. You all could see how reckless he was..

First we couldnt get past the party, check this out, lol..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-25%2022.42.36_zps

Then neera failed her last invisibility so we had to rest again, Edwin turned into a wolf..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-25%2022.49.56_zps

We took on Davaeorn. The plan was to fully buff Coran and let the mage waist all his spells on him and then take him out. Things looked fine.
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2006.51.16_zps

Thing was, I didnt know the potion that protects from level 5 or lower spells also dispells all other potion buffs.. Thing is this is no reload so I had to buff again. After a while it looked like Davaeorn was all out but then this happened:
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2006.59.34_zps

44 damage.. wut?..

From that on we just couldnt do anything against the mage and his evergrowing army.. Look at this rediculousness..:
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2007.09.29_zps

I decided to retreat but we were all out of money and items, so we did some looting.
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2007.29.07_zps

We even tried Durlags tower. We were doing fine and had some nice loot when we encountered the crazy mage at level 3. He was castin spells like crazy, never seen anything like it. His spelllist was endless. When I thought he was out, he wasnt.. The last magic missile sequencer did low-hp Eren in.
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2008.25.02_zps

I dont know what they were thinking with this mage, he must be level 12-15 ish.. We had little chance against this guy. Then again, I was careless against him, mages are just so hard in bg1..

Cheers!

Eren the 'Fair' Update 1 (Final)

Decided to make a kensai/thief human(oid) with a nack for picking nice loot, backstabbing and using kai with powerful weapons, all the while dispelling illusions, setting traps and UAI. Is still dotally different from my sorcerer trilogy so it should be fun and fresh.

Holy **** at those stats! Eren is enormously beautiful now :)

Close calls again... When do I learn?

Gulped a clearmind potion right before this happened..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2016.34.38_zps

Then I decided for some reason to loot the smithy.. Flaming fists came in and I got stuck.. the result was I had to kill every last one of them with a freaking staff.. yes, reputation 1..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2016.42.13_zps

Jaheira and Khalid wanted nothing to do with me..

Killed men for potions, good ones for kensai.

Neera died.. I take her gem bag, though no questline for me this time.. A grease spell slows me down to a crawl..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-26%2016.52.01_zps

It didnt end up mattering. Went for shoal who went hostile but.. thanks for the kiss, right before the killing blow..

Im going to give this kensai /thief another chance in the next week or so...

@Blackraven: Tough break Blackraven. As you are discovering (or perhaps you already knew), there's a reason Durlag's Tower has claimed the lives of many no-reloaders' characters...

@Golden28: Sorry to see Eren didn't make it - perhaps next time will be the charm.

Grond0, what pre-emptive actions were you alluding to?

If you assume you know nothing about the conflict then you probably won't react until the attackers are pretty much on top of you.  Pre-emptive action could be for instance all immediately throwing fireballs where you expect the enemies to appear.

@Grond0, understood. If I try again, which I consider likely for my upcoming run, I will start buffing in the last elemental fight (before being teleported to the chessboard) and probably throw some AoE damge or debilitation magics to the opposite side.

@Corey, yes, Durlag's is damned hard, but good fun!

Lenhardt, Gnome Cleric/Illusionist

I'm going to try my hand at another party run, though I suspect that multiple NPC deaths will make some kind of impact on my enjoyment of the game. It's therefore thinkable that my new Charname ends up traveling alone at times or that I'll apply a 'three times you're out' rule re: NPC deaths.

Here's Lenhardt:311dec3e8c1728972e38dd851e29f3.jpg

Lenhardt is a bit like how I perceive BG2 Quayle: a softspoken, friendly, caring Gnome. He likes the company of nice folk but he's not everyone's friend and will typically avoid abusive, dictatorial, negative, and evil people. Like most Gnomes Lenhardt is curious, cheerful, and cautious when facing dangerous situations.

I uninstalled Divine Remix, to give Lenhardt vanilla Cleric spells and abilities.

I'm likely to take a 'completionist' approach, especially if all party slots are filled most of the time, because a Cleric/Mage levels slowly.

Hopefully the wealth of spells will make for a fun and educational experience.

Lenhardt, Gnome Cleric/Illusionist, 1st update

Day 4:

Perhaps all is not so bad. Gorion's fall still grieves me profoundly of course and the fact that there's a price on my head still scares me, but at least I have dear Imoen and clever Neossa by my side, and we have proven that we're not completely incompetent.
On our way to the Friendly Arm Inn, where we were to meet Gorion's friends and to find the ring alluded to in E's letter, one of Imoen's arrows killed an aggressive Ogre after I had blinded it.

Spoiler
And at the Friendly Arm Inn itself, we met a human male at the entrance, a necromancer by the looks of him. Apparently he knew that my scalp was worth a few hundred GP. He tried to attack us, but I Commanded him to sleep.
Spoiler
When he got up, I Blinded him.
Spoiler
He started running around frantically, making it very difficult to hit him. I asked Imoen to help me take him down, but she was out of arrows. With some luck, and with the help of the guards I downed him.
Spoiler
I was surprised that the guards knew that the wizard was the wrongdoer, and not us, until Gellana Mirrorshade - a Gnome and a Cleric like me, though she follows Garl Glittergold - told me she had seen the wizard and called the guards.

Inside the inn we met Gorion's friends, Khalid and Jaheira. The four of us traveled to Beregost: Imoen and I to see Firebead Elvenhair, whose counsel we desired, and Khalid and Jaheira because Beregost was a stop for them on the way to Nashkel where they had a meeting with the mayor regarding the iron crisis. The Half-Elves wanted me to accompany them to Nashkel, but I had more important things on my mind than the Iron Crisis. Khalid and Jaheira were in such a rush that they didn't even have time to help some of the townsfolk in Beregost. We decided to split up again and meet each other later, probably in Nashkel. Jaheira wasn't very understanding, but that's probably because I didn't tell her much about my situation. It's not that I don't trust her, but she seems to know everything better, which I tells me she isn't as wise as she claims.

We helped some of the people in Beregost (generally in return for reasonable rewards), even with such dangerous tasks as exterminating a Huge Spider plague and slaying two Ogrillons. Firebead Elvenhair recommended us to seek shelter in the bustle of Baldur's Gate. His suggestion makes sense. The anonymity we may find in the big city could help bounty hunters forget about me. On the morrow, Imoen and I shall head north.

GL Blackraven and HF.

Anyhow, with my swashbuckler on hold (I will continue him I think  -when I get bored of these two you're about to see), I rolled a sweet pair.

Moebius

a1_zpsc3fwadig.jpg

and Azara

a2_zpsrei8get8.jpg

I'm using my standard Revisions/SCS/Refinements/aTweaks demons/undead/mephits install.

Starting pips - Moebius Flail**, sling** / Azara Crossbow*. I made a mistake when picking spells for Moebius (probably because I never play mage protagonists), and not picked Find Familiar  - this means that until Nimbul is slain Familiar is unavailable. Shouldn't matter in the long run anyway.

Fwiw, I really should have named them Hansel and Gretchel.

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief - take 14 (update 3)

Day 24 (25 Mirtul)

From Nashkell Dyara and Xan went south to Fire Leaf Forest. There had been too many bounty hunter on her heels for Dyara to like Sendai's joke and thus a fight was unavoidable. Again Xan proved to be quite the charmer...

Spoiler

Proved it to Vax as well who then became introduced to the 'fastest dart thrower that ever walked the Sword Coast'.

Day 25 (26 Mirtul)

Further west a dryad and her tree were saved.

Day 26 (27 Mirtul)

Xan made good use of the sleep spell when they stormed the Gnoll Stronghold.

Spoiler

They took Dynaheir in and promised to take her to Nashkell where her guardian Minsc was waiting for her. Unfortunately they hadn't much equipment for her besides a robe, the lore ioun stone and the dex gloves. No staff, no sling (Xan was running low on bullets anyway). Finally she got the wand of missiles and some darts - Dyara just hoped Dynaheir wouldn't hurt herself with the pointy little sticks.

Following the river they went north - to Bear River. As they were about to rest Dyara and Xan had a hefty argument (their relationship had become a little bit difficult over the last days), Dyara didn't slept well afterwards but besides that their rest remained undisturbed.

Spoiler

Day 27 (28 Mirtul)

Dynaheir proved to be a natural with the darts as the next two kills (polar bear, ogrer berserker) were hers...

Spoiler

Neither Neville and his gang nor the brutes on the bridge were a real challenge.

Later however a unfortunate accident happened as the three agreed to help to fight some gibberlings. Perhaps Laurel shouldn't have suggested using fire ...

Their reputation went down to ten and Dyara felt she will never be able to buy that archmage dress from Thalantyr. Because of her low reputation Dyara felt too ashamed to return to Nashkell immediately so the the three went to Xvart Village and Fishermen's Lake.

Day 28 (29 Mirtul)

Even meeting her childhood hero Drizzt didn't cheered Dyara up.

Day 29 (30 Mirtul)

Finally they returned to Nashkell where Dynaheir got reunited with Minsc. The two then went to Friendly Arm Inn but not before...

Spoiler

At the Helm temple paid for their reputation to be restored to 18. While selling the loot Dyara found a very powerful scroll within her bag... a 'maze' scroll . Once in candlekeep Gorion had shown her such a scroll but he hadn't allowed her to touch it. And now she was holding such a scroll in her own hands ready to use it on... whom? And when? Not really sure what to do with it she just put it back in her scroll case.

Dyara: 87888 XP, 507 kills, Greater Basilisk, F(5)/M(5)/T(6), 51/59 HP
Xan: 9770 XP, 59 kills, Doomsayer, Enchanter(7), 18/28 HP
Dynaheir: 3200 XP, 19 kills, Polar Bear, Invoker(6), 31/36 HP

Xan was tired (again) and so they went to the inn for resting and making plans for the next day.

Day 30 (1 Kythorn)

They went north then to Lonely Peaks. There they learned that cows do have more hitpoints than elven enchanters.

Spoiler

Day 31 (2 Kythorn)

After talking to Bjornim Dyara's reputation was restored to 20 again. Dyara and Xan then spend the night at Feldpost Inn... their first night together ;). Early in the morning they went to High Hedge where Dyara (after selling lots of loot) bought an archmage robe for Xan, an archmage dress for herself and also lots of spells ('Blindness', 'Invisibility', 'Horror', 'Hold Person', 'Skull Trap') for Xan to learn. Unfortunately there weren't any level 4 spells to buy. However without a potion of genius Xan didn't dared to scribe the spells so they just went into the scroll case.

Day 32 (3 Kythorn)

Back in Beregost Dyara bought some biting arrows, from the temple she bought a 'stone to flesh' scroll and a few healing potions (you'll bnever get them that cheap she thought as she still had charisma 24 from buying the biting arrows). That left them with just 35 gold.

Day 33 (4 Kythorn)

Short after midnight they reached Mutamin's garden where Dyara still had some business to do. After slaying the two lesser basilisk they released Tamah from her stone prison. Then Dyara scouted the area for Kirian and other enemies.

Kirian and her friends were easily found. Xan dire charmed Baerin while a biting arrow from Dyara disabled Kirian. Lindin and Peter then fought Baerin, Baerin killed Kirian. Xan killed Lindin while Dyara did the same with Peter. Finally Baerin was killed by a moonblade.

Spoiler

From there the couple went south to Gullykin.

@Dyara, awesome update! Lots of interesting and funny stuff: the relationship with Xan, the Maze scroll(!), and I couldn't suppress a smile when I read about poor Laurel, not because I wanted her to suffer, but because Euphonia & Co had had the same problem with her.

Lenhardt, Gnome Cleric/Illusionist, 2nd update

Day 11:

A tenday has passed since Gorion's sad quietus. Imoen, Neossa, and I have already seen much of the Sword Coast, although there's lots more for us to discover still. Our journey to Baldur's Gate we made in vain, for we found the city locked up as a preventive measure against the rampant banditry.

Spoiler
We couldn't argue against that because we had already had our share of the bandits. North of the Friendly Arm we escaped an ambush thanks to Neossa who had cast Invisibility 10' Radius upon us.
Spoiler
And we slew one bandit that was trying to bully three fishermen into handing him a golden bowl and other possessions.
Spoiler
We spoke to the fishermen after that, and they asked us to get a priestess of the evil goddess Umberlee off their back. We went to pay the priestess a visit, north of the fishermen's homes. The lands were infested with Ankhegs, but we kept to the shore where the creatures woudln't show themselves.

The priestess of Umberlee attacked us after we asked her about her version of the story. A Command and some non-lethal violence

Spoiler
made the girl - for she couldn't be called a woman - see reason though. We learned that Tenya, as she called herself, was an orphan, that the fishermen had killed her mother and stolen her bowl of Umberlee. Imoen and I were moved by Tenya's story and offered the girl to return to the fishermen to claim the bowl for her.

The fishermen didn't like our change of allegiance, but seemed too afraid of us, armed as we were, to deny us the bowl. We gave Tenya the bowl, and she Dimension Doored away. That girl must be truly blessed by her goddess; it's a spell that I cannot cast.
Even further north the farmlands were plagued not by Ankhegs but by Zombies. We must have slain twenty of them. The farmers were very grateful, rewarding us with 150 GP, and eager to continue their work.

Our good deeds for Tenya, and for the farmers, make me feel good about our trip, even though we failed at our original plan of finding shelter in Baldur's Gate. Said failure does have consequences for Imoen and me. We're living a nomadic lifestyle, roaming the Sword Coast without much of a purpose but to stay alive.
We returned to Beregost and decided to travel further south, to Nashkel. Maybe we would meet Khalid and Jaheira there. On the road we ran into more bandits, human and hobgoblin. Their archers were particularly dangerous, but my spells (Sleep, Blindness) helped us pull through.

Spoiler
There were spoils as well, a Ring of Protection +1 that Imoen spotted on top of a large stone, glistening in the evening sun, a pair of Boots of Stealth on one of the Hobgoblins we slew, and a Ring of Human Influence that a kindly nobleman gave us.

In Nashkel we met an Amnish soldier who told us about his former captain that had inexplicably started killing innocents, and then disappeared, and with mayor Berrun Ghastkill who told us he hadn't seen Khalid and Jaheira yet. This surprised me, worried me even. In the Nashkel inn another bounty hunter recognized me, a priestess. Before she could hurt us, I Held her (an ability that Baervan had recently bestowed on me).

Spoiler
She fell to my bullets and Imoen's arrows. The realization that we made that woman pay with her life for a wrong decision filled me with grief. On the other hand, how many victims would she have made if we hadn't stopped her?

We went looking for Khalid and Jaheira south of Nashkel, in the Mines area, because that's where Berrun Ghastkill told us the town's troubles were. We asked a young artist, a sculptor who was working on a beautiful image of Ellesime, Lady of the Elves of Suldanessalar, but he had seen no one that matched the descriptions we gave him of Khalid and Jaheira. It didn't surpise me because he seemed much to deeply engaged in his work, and overcome by his fear of a man called Greywolf, a Bounty Hunter who was after two emeralds he had apparently stolen. We met this Greywolf a short while later, and soon understood why the artist had been so terrified. Greywolf was a fearsome warrior with an enchanted blade that cleaved through my magical defense (I was protected by Shield), as if it weren't there, when I tried to Hold him as I had done with the priestess in the Nashkel Inn. Fortunately I had more success with a Blindness.

Spoiler
Even when blinded he moved quite rapidly, and at one point we lost him. In our search for him, we were ambushed by a pack of Kobolds. Kobolds are amongst the oldest racial enemies of my kin, and understandably so. The dastardly cretaures tend to attack in large packs, and they use poisoned daggers, snares and other tricks to inflict suffering on their foes. The animosity was felt on both sides, because the creatures targeted me rather than Imoen.
Spoiler
I ended up tanking them, allowing Imoen to shoot them down.
Spoiler
An Amnish guard named Dandal told us that these Kobolds were the problem in the Nashkel Mines. They had pretty much taken over the lower levels. Imoen and I decided to wait with investigating the mines because larger packs than the one we had just dealt with could cause us a world of pain. We needed to be better prepared.

We found Greywolf, who dealt both Imoen and me a heavy blow when his Blindness had worn off,

Spoiler
and suffered ten charges of Imoen's Wand of Magic Missiles (consuming it) before one of many sling bullets launched from my trusty sling saw him collapse.
Spoiler
When we went to check on the sculptor we witnessed him finish his work, and drop down, dead as well. A sad end, even if he did mange to complete his masterwork.

@Dyara, awesome update! Lots of interesting and funny stuff: the relationship with Xan, the Maze scroll(!), and I couldn't suppress a smile when I read about poor Laurel, not because I wanted her to suffer, but because Euphonia & Co had had the same problem with her.

Thank you :). Me and Dyara really like the Xan romance so far... but I still don't know what to do with a maze scroll in BG1 (is Sarevok immune? putting him out of the way for 3d4 rounds could be helpful).

As for Laurel, I think wasn't a good idea to let Dynaheir cast a fireball but with Dynaheir not really well protected (she had failed to learn the armor spell - twice - bad luck on a 75%-15%=60% chance) and with Xan having only 19 hitpoints I wanted to end this fight quickly... and quick it was :D.

Very nice update btw :).

[edit]I'm still impressed how Xan charmes enemies at will. Do specialist mages get a bonus when casting spells from their own school (target gets a saving throw penalty)? I did some research but couldn't find an answer... some said yes, others said no :D[edit]

After more searching and to answer my own question: it seems they get a +2 bonus. [edit]Or perhaps not... [/edit]
