Eren the 'Fair' Episode 1. The previous try wasnt even real :S

Decided to specialise in a big, powerful weapon to combine with kai. And I just like big weapons, so I chose Two handed swords and daggers.
Did basilisks and shoal. Throwing daggers do decent damage.

Melicamp got whole this time!

Thank you  :). Me and Dyara really like the Xan romance so far... but I still don't know what to do with a maze scroll in BG1 (is Sarevok immune? putting him out of the way for 3d4 rounds could be helpful).

I've never done the Xan romance, but Dyara and Xan seem a nice pairing. They're both well-meaning, sensitive people I think.

I'd be surprised if Sarevok were immune to Maze. He has very good saves, but that won't help him against a Maze.

As for Laurel, I think wasn't a good idea to let Dynaheir cast a fireball but with Dynaheir not really well protected (she had failed to learn the armor spell - twice - bad luck on a 75%-15%=60% chance) and with Xan having only 19 hitpoints I wanted to end this fight quickly... and quick it was  :D.

Very nice update btw  :).

Understood (Euphonia's dealings with the Gibberlings went that way for the same reason).

Thenks very much!

[edit]I'm still impressed how Xan charmes enemies at will. Do specialist mages get a bonus when casting spells from their own school (target gets a saving throw penalty)? I did some research but couldn't find an answer... some said yes, others said no  :D[edit]

This is confusing because different sources say different things. At the Baldur's Gate Forums one of the developers mentioned that a saving throw penalty for targets of spells cast from a specialist's own school was never implemented in the original game (nor in the EEs).

The advantages that Specialist Mages get, are:

- a bonus spell per level,
- a +2 bonus to all saving throws against spells of their chosen school,
- a +15% bonus chance to learn spells of their chosen school

The disadvantages:

- no access to spells from the opposition school
- a -15% penalty to their chance to learn spells from any other school than their chosen school.

I'm not surprised that Xan gives you another impression though. Lenhardt is also very effective with his Blindness spells. :)

Best of luck with the new Eren. I see he's been living on the edge, like most of his predecessors :P
Nice work on Silke though. I normally don't mess with until my party's quite high-level.

Thanks BR.

Yes living on the edge is part of what makes this exciting. And we were high level cause of the basilisks. Not that a lightning bolt wouldnt have done some serious damage though, so maybe I got lucky there ;)

Cheers!

Most likely a misunderstanding on my part then - english is not my first language (as you may have already guessed). When I re-read this ( ;) ) I think it's as you've said, they only get the bonus for spells cast on them, they don't get a bonus for the spells they cast.

But still, Xan hardly ever fails with his enchantment spells. Unfortunately the engines doesn't give much feedback to test this.

[edit]@Golden: Good luck with Eren. Seeing all the blood on the portraits I'm afraid he really needs it ;).[/edit]

Are you sure about +2 to saves from chosen school?  I don't think this is implemented in BG.

I got the info from Dee (a member of the EE development team) over at the BG forums.

Heh. No wonder I don't waste time on EEs since apperantly even developers don't know what they've implemented.

I ran 2 checks with Web spell, tweaked so that the save is made at -20, otherwise vanilla EE2 install.

Both mages have save vs spell at 0, so they must roll *0* for a succesfull save.

The first one is a Conjurer (he gains no save vs Evocation). Save is made, like it should be, on a roll of 0 and 0 alone.

ho_zpsvuj3xikj.jpg

Now, the second one is an Invoker. With Web being their school spell, he should have a better chance of saving. He doesn't, however. Same save vs spells as the above example, he can only save on 0.

@Aasim, I don't understand. You tweaked the Web spell so that it imposes a -20 penalty? In that case any character with a save vs spell of 0, like the mages in your example, would have to roll not a 0 but a 20 in order not te be held, no? An Invoker would save against being held with rolls of 18, 19 or 20 (provided the saves bonus for spells of a specialist mage's own school has indeed been implemented).

Nevermind, I understand that it's 20 for the roll minus 20 for the save penalty = 0.
Thanks for the info. Shame that this hasn't been properly implemented.

Strange... just made a level 1 conjurer and a level 1 mage and I get

Conjurer: Save vs. Spell: 24 ( = 20  + 2 + 2)

on a save vs. a grease spell (save vs. spells at +2) cast by the mage. Where does the second +2 come from? If not from him being a conjurer?

Btw my manual says 'that character must roll higher than their saving throw value'. Is it really higher?

What's your Conjurer's save score?

Odd. I get same results on EE2. Save can go up to 22 rolled, which is as it should be (20+2 for Grease=22). Doesn't matter if the caster is Conjurer or not.

The manual is wrong. Save must be equal (or lower) to succeed. I'll re-check, but I'm fairly sure that if a character has a save vs spells of 0, he will always succeed in case no penalty is assigned to the spell.

I've done the same, Conjurer, level 1, casts Grease, clean EE1 install. Save goes up to 22, never higher, which is in line with the EE2 test I made. Likewise, minimum he must roll for the save to be succesfull is 14 (he has base 12, +2 from Grease =14).

This adds up to following:

1) manual is wrong. You need to roll equal for a succesfull save, not higher. (if that be the case, min save roll would have to be 15 - and two EE2 mages I tested with Web would never roll a succesfull save)

2) Specialist mages (at least in EE) gain no bonuses against their school of magic (save would be rolled at +2, which would show scores of 23 and 24, respectfully - which never happens with a level 1 Conjurer casting Grease)

gris2_zpssezf1qwz.jpg

I haven't tested this on "old" BG install, so can't vouch for what happens there.

I did my tests with EE1 (and an unmodified grease spell). Conjurer's saving throw vs. spells was set to 19.

Thnx for the screenshot - that helped me a lot. It seems that if a Conjurer casts Grease (against self or another Conjurer, doesn't matter), the bonuses aren't applied. IF a mage of any kit casts Grease against a Conjurer - he does indeed save with a bonus (of +2, as advertised). I've tested this with a -9 penalty to save, thus a level 1 Conjurer (save vs spells of 12) can save *only* if his bonuses kick in. It indeed happened - but never if Grease was cast by another Conjurer (or himself). If a Necromancer casted it, Conjurer can indeed make a save.

Necromancer could never save succesfully.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 75 - (4th and final update)

Ruff, gnome cleric/thief (Grond0) & Justice, human inquisitor (Gate70)

Having dealt with Centeol last time, Ruff & Justice started today by handing over Chelak's body before running through the remainder of the Cloakwood to get to the mine.  There, Drasus got a glimpse of Justice before preparations were complete, resulting in him and Genthore chasing - though ultimately to their cost.

Spoiler

The mages stayed where they were and eventually realised their mistake silently.

Spoiler

A minimum of fighting took the duo down to Daveorn's level.  Ruff's fairly poor trap detection ability proved sufficient to avoid any battle horrors spawning and Justice used a potion of magic blocking to chase after Davaeorn - two hits proving sufficient during the mage's attempt to create enough space using dimension doors to cast spells.

Spoiler

Arriving in Baldur's Gate the priority targets were the poison quest to get the wisdom tome, Ramazith to get the intelligence tome (bumping up Justice sufficiently to be able to use scrolls) and the Helm of Balduran.  The only hard fight there was on the way up Ramazith's tower, but they prevailed.  Ruff also tried to get a reward for returning Tremain's son, but must have spoken again too quickly to Tremain and was not rewarded for handing over the body.

Spoiler

The availability of skeletons meant they could get an extra reward of some Boots of Speed from Lothander.

Spoiler

After sneaking into the Iron Throne they departed for Candlekeep.  The tombs there were robbed with the aid of a potion of perception to tackle the traps before a few dopplegangers got a close-up view of the Sword of Justice.  Prat found the cat had got his tongue and with Sakul dying to the opening blow of the conflict his gang were quickly overcome.

Spoiler

Justice showed a high degree of reluctance to follow Ruff's urgings to go and take on the basilisks until Ruff condescended to explain the reason why he had no green scroll in his inventory was he had already used it on Justice :P.

The final tome was retrieved from Durlag's Tower before Justice went to find the pantaloons at the FAI Beregost Carnival.

Back in Baldur's Gate some of their vast stocks of cash provided potions and a few dispelling arrows.  One of the latter slowed Slythe up and made him an easy victim.

Spoiler

Justice then showed himself to Krystin to encourage her to cloudkill him (and Quenash to get the Cloak).

Spoiler

At the palace some skeletons occupied part of the dopplegangers' attention while Justice smacked them around.  No attempt was made to protect Liia and she died just before the end, but Belt was virtually untouched and sent the duo off to the maze.

Spoiler

They were still potioned up from the palace and made short work of the inhabitants there.  That included the skeleton warriors where Justice got his revenge on Ruff by gently asking why he was hanging back when he had already been protected against undead .

Ruff had a single summon animal spell left, but a couple of dogs were unable to get the Undercity party to fight amongst themselves.  However, after Ruff silenced the casters Justice was able to go in and take the party apart anyway - helped by the fact that Rahvin being silenced meant that Gorf stayed neutral until he became the last to be attacked.

Justice successfully pulled Sarevok out with a dispelling arrow.

Spoiler

With his haste down the big man made a meal of the 4 skeletons in a welcoming committee and one of those got the final blow in after he was savaged by Justice and a couple of backstabs from Ruff.

Spoiler

In a well-judged run the duo were very close to the XP cap with just under 161k each.  Ruff had 163 XP more than Justice, which meant that his extra share of the rounded XP amounted to almost exactly 0.1% of Justice's allocation.

Stats:

Ruff cleric 7 / thief 8, 47 HPs, 166 kills

Justice, inquisitor 8, 94 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 261 kills, 0 deaths

Moebius and Azara, 1st and final(!) BG1 update

I'll make this rather short. The biggest problem I had in this game was geting Moebius to level 2/2/2. On my install, this takes a total of 6K EXP. Since Azara eats half XP for her progression, 12K is needed to gain level up - which is a lot. 5K from Shoal (Wand of MM + few hits) was enough to give Azara 2nd level, but Moebius took a while. I even ended up fighting Greywolf with level 1 protagonist, which isn't something I normally do. Luckily, he was very set on killing Azara, so Moebius eventually got a few slingshots in, and Wand finished him.

a3_zps04g0wicy.jpg

The first big goal was to gain access to some powerful wands. I took the Paralyzation wand under sanctuary (Potion of Clarity used for sirens, but no magical weapon vs golems yet), and fought Ankhegs. This gave us a decent XP ammount for further gameplay. With wands, many encounters were made much easier, and when Azara gained level 3 spells (Skull Trap first pick) things speeded up drastically.

a4_zpsj5ay3jd1.jpg

Of course, it was still a bumpy road, so great care was in order to keep this fragile duo alive. Here is the fight with Amazons - one of them went invisible (on my install, two go invisible, without using potions or anything - odd, but that's the way it works). She tried to attack Azara.

a5_zps3o0lhwp2.jpg

Invisibility potion was used asap, and we ended the fight w/o losses.

a6_zpsxgjk2jnq.jpg

a7_zpsltwfim0s.jpg

Next (possibly leathal) battle was vs Davaeorn. Original idea was that Moebius under a Pro Magic scroll kills him. Unfortunately, this took a while, and soon Moebius begun to take big damage from guards entering the place. Azara needed to help, and under the cover of invisibility, she set three Skull Traps where I hoped Davaeorn would venture.

a8_zpsaxbifpw3.jpg

And indeed he did. :)

a9_zps1jp2dj1t.jpg

In the city, all ok, one notable fight was Slythe/Krystin. Moebius didn't have protection from criticals here, so this could have ended very ugly. His HP (with Robe, Helmet, Heroism potion and Familiar) at this moment was 78. If Slythe rolled a 19 or 20, it's instakill.

a10_zpshemitvaa.jpg

Regardless, he never rolled as high damage again, and died. Took a lot of big potions (every hit he made, and he made 3 total - never missing actually) to keep Moebius alive. I left Krysten alone, and ran out. Duchal palace was easy with a double Chaos shot to start.

a11_zpsbew8r56i.jpg

As for Sarevok, this was kind of an odd battle. Azara couldn't cast level 5 spells apart from scrolls, hence I had to rely on a single Cloudkill scroll and Ice Storms. Skull traps aren't really effective since mages have MGoI, and only Tazok is initially vulnerable to them. Anyhow, we started by killing Angelo (Wand of Paralyzation). Now, Cloudkill is thrown - it didn't kill anyone, but Semaj's morale broke. Ice Storm did him.

a12_zps61vatefn.jpg

Tazok dies to the 2nd one.

a13_zpsmngju4cq.jpg

With only Diramid and Sarevok alive, Wand of Monster summoning is put to good use.

a14_zpsu8qymqnw.jpg

It doesn't last long until Sarevok admits his defeat.

a15_zpsqcfc8b5o.jpg

I'll start posting on Moebius'&Azara's BG2 exploits soon.

There are many styles of play and different paces associated with those different styles. Each style can be rewarding in its own way, but I, personally, find the game most enjoyable and rewarding when I slow down and take the time to immerse myself in the story, the characters, the adventure.

Don't feel rushed. Just enjoy, and play your way. Many of us -myself included- respect the approach you're taking.

Best,

My average time to finish BG1 is roughly 4-5 hours, 5 tops. I ended the run in 2 days time. Once you get the hang of it, BG1 is very easy to do. If one would partake in all the sidequests/conversations, it would take me probably a week of playing several hours a day - but I simply don't have time for that. :(

@Dyara, I second Alesia's words. I really like your playthrough(s). You bring Dyara to life for us readers, which I think is admirable. Thank you for sharing her adventures with us. Personally I've done both roleplayed, extensively journaled playthroughs and more tactical, faster runs. I've been more successful with the latter, but I enjoy the former just as much, sometimes more. (With the relatively successful, but more tactical playthroughs I often think "Shame I didn't invest more in the story.")

Lenhardt, Gnome Cleric/Illusionist, 3rd update

Day 20:

It's strange how fast the days go by, even when not much happens. Many hours we spend walking, enjoying the outdoors (I'm glad Imoen likes nature as much as I do), and chatting. The two of us must be a curious sight to behold: the tall, trim human ginger and the wee, brown-skinned gnomish whitebeard.
Anyway, Imoen and I decided to explore the lands west, north-west of Nashkel, without much of a plan. The thing is there's not much reason to plan anything. Good people and work can be found wherever we go, it seems. I do feel safer in the wilderness than in places like Beregost or Nashkel where there's a higher probability of Bounty Hunters finding out about me.

Our travels brought us all the way to the southcoast, where we had two interesting encounters. First of all there was Charleston Nib, the archaeologist. With his crew he was digging up an ancient settlement of a long extinct race. He hired us to protect him against bandits, but in the end it was his own people we had to protect him from: a treacherous associate that asked us to kill the man, and a group of diggers that went berserk all of a sudden, possibly due to the foul air in which I sensed a mysterious evil. Almost reflexively I put the hostile diggers to rest with a Sleep spell, and after that Imoen and I put them to rest in a more permanent fashion. It was a dark day for us Charleston, Imoen and me. Slaying six or seven men to save one; I'm still unsure whether we did the right thing.
On a more positive note, we managed to avoid bloodshed when we ran into Captain Brage, the Nashkel guard captain. He was very confused and later, when we pacified him, repentant about his own actions. It turned that his violence had never sprouted from his own will, but rather from a cursed greatsword he had wielded. Imoen and I escorted him back to Nashkel where we brought him into the care of Nalin, the local priest of Helm.

On our way to Nashkel we saved a rooster from an attacking wolf, and were in for a big surprise when it thanked us in a male voice, speaking the common tongue. Melicamp as he called himself, told us he was Thalantyr's apprentice and asked us to bring him to the High Hedge to get him restored into his human form. After our visit to Nashkel, this was what we did. Thalantyr made us take down a Skeleton for its skull, and used it succesfully for Melicamp's restoration. [Note B.: I can no longer complain about Thalantyr; this must have been his 3rd or 4th success in a row.]

In nearby Beregost Imoen told me she had bought an enchanted, charisma-increasing cloak from a merchant at Feldepost's Inn. When I told her I wanted to to go and have a look at his wares, she became all nervous. After a pause she said the merchant had already left Beregost.

Spoiler
Instead of visiting Feldepost's we decided to check one of the other taverns, the Red Sheaf. That proved a bad idea. We were accosted by an angry-looking Dwarf who made it very clear to us that he was to take the bounty on my head. Nothing personal, it was just what he did for a living. I Blinded, and later Held him; he ended up like the other bounty hunters...
Spoiler
I felt no sorrow this time.

Day 27:

This entry isn't about the adventures of the party of Imoen, Neossa, and Lenhardt, but those of the party of said three and Quayle. Yes, a new member has joined us, and he's a kinsman no less, a rock gnome and a Hoodwinker of Baravar Cloakshadow, with a variety of arcane tricks up his sleeve as well. We met him at the Nashkel Carnival after a we completed a mission east of Beregost for Keldath Ormlyr. Hmm, maybe I should relate that mission first, for it was quite the adventure.
We were to slay a number of Basilisks, led by an evil wizard named Mutamin, that had petrified many innocents and were gradually making their way westward, to the town of Beregost. If the wizard was unwilling to cease his nefarious activities, he too could be slain. We found the Basilisks easily enough. I had a green scroll of Protection from Petrification to protect myself against their gaze attacks, but it wore off when i still had three of the creatures to deal with. A Ghoul that had little love for the lizards helped me with one of them, but it got Blinded by the wizard (a fellow gnome!) when it attacked another one. This enabled the Basilisk to slay its attacker without difficulty. From a distance I Blinded the Basilisk just when it killed the Ghoul.

Spoiler
It fell to my sling bullets. A Greater (and final) Basilisk suffered the exact same fate.
Spoiler
[Note that there was no risk here. The Greater Basilisk was neutral, presumably because Mutamin hadn't said hi yet.]Mutamin was infuriated by our slaying of the Basilisks he had charmed. I Silenced him, but he cast Vocalize in response. Imoen, Neossa and I fought him with what we had, arrows, claws, bullets, and spells. It didn't stop our foe from Charming Imoen (who unlike me has no defense against charms), before Neossa slew the wicked wizard.
Spoiler
Back to the Nashkel Carnival. In one of the tents we had thought a shop, Imoen and I had a violent encounter with a wizard we had witnessed killing a female sorceress for no reason but her being a 'witch'. After a while of ineffective spellcasting,
Spoiler
and clumsy fighting,
Spoiler
on both sides, Imoen managed to fell the evildoer with a well-placed arrow.
Spoiler
It was after that skirmish that Imoen and I met Quayle. Well aware of both his strengths and weaknesses (maybe a bit too aware of the former, but he's a bit older and may have seen more of the world than we have), it was Quayle who suggested we join our forces. Like me, he is a spellcaster with arcane as well as divine powers.

Our first adventure with Quayle took us to the coast again, where the Hoodwinker said he was headed (albeit only after we had told him we were going there.) The shores were inhabited by Sirines, and a bit further inland, an army of Hobgoblins (including elite archers) had colonized the soil.

Spoiler
It's good that Neossa, Quayle and I are all more or less skilled in illusion magics; we slipped by the soldiers invisibly avoiding a battle we couldn't win. We entered a cave to get some rest but found it guarded by Flesh Golems, and full of snares (one of which painfully triggered by me).
Spoiler
With Imoen, Neossa and Quayle as invisible diversions, I managed to destroy the Flesh Golems without getting myself killed.

Let the bard do the identifying.

Banditcamp was fun as usual. Eren was caught stealing. A thief yelled: thief! (lol) and the whole camp turned on us. The tent-boys came out and the chase was on. We got them with webs and sleep.

Found a new picture for my Eren, he looks awesome!
We saved a cow but Edwin was complaining he'd leave with our high rep, so he killed the farmer and his cow out of pure spite! Our rep dropped 8 points! Oh well I cant let Edwin leave, not when Im so close to unlocking his power (lol).. with his haste and fireball spells..

Did the four at the mine. Started with aoe spells and killed a mage and a warrior for boots of haste. F*ing Kysus came at us again.. This guy..
Then it started to storm..

Both me and Kysus got hit with lightning 2 times per round, it was the most crazy (and probably buggy) lightning storm ever. Kysus was invulnerable to lightning though, but Eren wasnt. I went crazy here, had to spend all my greater healing potions, and eventually even had to bail.

For rp reasons I refused to head all the way back to and inn so I went back in immediately after the storm subsided. After a brutal battle, Eren managed to kill the mage.. damn..
