Thanks Alesia and Grond0 for your good wishes.

@Flamedance and The Pottty 1, if that's tha case I'll probably try to install Ascension via BP. I could always take Gerry from EE ToB to BGT ToB should I run into problems (and should he successfully negotiate SoA)

As promised...

Reasoning behind this character: of all classes, the ones with the worst wand/spell saves is Fighter, and Gnomes get bonuses to those saves. Plus, Berserk grants immunity to Stun. Halfling was also a possibility, but one of the titles I once used was the Only Gnomish Barbarian, so this was an obvious choice.  :P

Nardal, Gnomish Berserker, introduction:

Screen%20Shot%202015-04-29%20at%202.53.1

Breaking from my standard Longsword or Flail play as well; BG2 kept throwing Bastard Swords at me, and there's basically no NPC that's ordinarily proficient in them in BG2... Thus points are 2 in Bastard sword, 1 in Longbow, and 1 in Two-weapon style.

Early game is standard, heading to Shoal to snipe her, though there was a complication when a Dread Wolf spawns. The 2 level boost only gives 12 HP, for a roll of 4 on 2d10: I almost considered restarting here because that's just so bad. Whatever, Nardal pushes on. A Ghast is killed at High Hedge, Marl talked down, a book given to Firebead, and two spiders are enough to give Nardal his 4th level, 9 HP.

South to Nashkel for the Ankheg armor and Pro. Petrification, back to the Basilisks. Korax died to the last basilisk, but Nardal gained level 5: 13 HP. The Ogre and returning quest items at the FAI puts Nardal at this position:

Screen%20Shot%202015-04-29%20at%204.04.5Current proficiencies: 3 in Bastard sword, 1 in Longbow, 2 in Two-weapon-style.

Gerry salutes Nardal :) Good luck Epsil0!

Gerry, Gnome Cleric/Thief, update 1

Although I've hardly achieved anything, I feel it's already time for a second entry. A lot has happened in what, two days? First of all there was this voice in my head telling me I was insufficiently skilled a cutpurse to nick an enchanted dagger from old Fuller in the barracks.

Spoiler
I also learned that I may have to heed that voice whenever I hear it again, for I ignored it and soon had Fuller and other Watchers on my heels.
Spoiler
Apart from the Watchers there were bounty hunters and assassins in the bunkhouse, the priests' quarters and the storehouse, all of whom were after me as well for some reason. One of them I handled quite nicely with my staff before I could even freak out; must have been some base survival instinct at work there.
Spoiler
But another one went invisible and hunted me, very scary.
Spoiler
I rushed to Gorion and I was pleased to see him as eager as I to leave Candlekeep.

Very well, no more babbling... Gorion... My dear foster father left Candlekeep with me, for me, because he knew someone or many someones wanted me dead. But in the end he was the one to fall. He died defending me from a band of ruffians, more bounty hunters it seemed, that wanted him to surrender me to them. I fled, as he instructed me to when an acid-coated arrow hit me, and saw nothing of the battle that ensued. I found his corpse the next morning, and that of two young men and two Ogres.
Gorion was a good man, better than I am, for sure. I know he wasn't my true father but he had selflessly cared for me and tutored me for as long as I can remember. And now he's gone. I feel like I'm still in a state of shock, like all this isn't real.

My friend Imoen from Candlekeep found me that same morning after Gorion's death. She wanted to travel with me but I relcutantly declined and saw her back safely to Candlekeep. Obviously she had no clue what she would have got herself into. As much as I would have liked her company, I couldn't put her life at risk just like that.

A letter on Gorion's corpse hinted at friends to be found at the Friendly Arm Inn, but I decided against going there. Gorion's killers might have read that letter. The alternative route I took, via High Hedge to Beregost, was hardly safe either, replete with Ghouls and Skeletons as it was.

Spoiler
And what made it worse, even at night I had great difficulty hiding from the creatures.
Spoiler
I shall definitely have to hone my stealth skills.

Anyway, I made it to Beregost where I met with Firebead and spoke with some of the townsfolk to see if there were any jobs I could do. For a woman named Mirianne I accepted to look for a Halfling messenger, but I found him dead, killed by Ogrillons. I slew the Ogrillons (before three Flaming Fist mercenaries would; surprisingly they attacked an Ogrillon that had strayed off).

Spoiler
Further south I was approached by two other, independent mercenary-types, but becoming more wary, I backed off.
Spoiler
(I knew from my Barbarian Styn and from Arnaeus' run (at the BG forums) that Tristan and Isolde were there, but it clearly hadn't become part of my metagaming system yet.) Mirianne gave me a Ring of the Princes, a generous reward, for handing her a letter from her husband (dropped by ine of the Ogrillons).

I'm currently at the Jovial Juggler inn, where I got another scare when a cloaked Half-Elf accosted me. I really seem to be becoming paranoid what with all those people that seem to want my scalp. I tried to impress the Half-Elf by telling her I was a mercenary that's not to be messed with, but she proved friendly, and even offered to join me.

Spoiler
I accepted. Morwen is my new companion's name, and Skald her profession. We'll see how she and I get along.

I'm really enjoying this tender young playthrough so far. Lots of unexpected stuff, such as the pickpocketing message, the Fist attacking the Ogrillons, and now Morwen. There were also Lathander priests/servants in the inn, but they wouldn't talk with Gerry yet.
At the start of the game I had a solo challenge in mind, but feel inclined to just go with the flow now, which fits Gerry's CN alignment, and have Gerry travel with Morwen for the time being. Morwen is a Dark Horizons NPC, with a slight XP headstart and too many enchanted personal items for my liking, but I may lower her XP and will drop (some of) those items. I would also crop her portrait match Gerry's better.
I've got no idea if she has any banter. If so, she'll have a better chance of staying on).

Seguro - halfling swashbuckler (update 1)

I considered picking up my RP party again, but decided I should have one more attempt at a swashbuckler.  To provide a bit of extra incentive for the character I created a new portrait.  Once more my initial aim was to play safe in order to at least get into ToB, but obviously my track record at sticking to such aims is not great and you'll see below I'm already starting to slide back into old habits ...

After leaving Candlekeep Seguro started off in Beregost.  Some spiders chased her in vain and provided a good start with a maximum 8 extra HPs for level 2.  A couple of ogrillons brought her back down to earth though with a minimum 3 for level 3.  A trip out to the coast to shoot Shoal got her to level 4 without problems, though she edged negative with 5 HPs.

She travelled the back roads to get to Nashkel where she rested to get LMD as a Bhaal power (reputation had taken a knock by helping Silke in Beregost).  She also talked to Noober to get to level 5 and got back to average with 6 HPs.

This time I was planning to raise reputation early and do shopping before starting the main quest.  As part of that, after picking up Samuel, Seguro travelled on the main road to get to the FAI.  Some bandits ambushed her on the way and she used a potion of invisibility to evade them and keep her record of no damage up to that point.
Spoiler
Carrying on those quests she got to level 6 by killing some worgs for Ardrouine.  That gave her just 4 HPs, but also provided her with set traps ability of 100 - up to this point she hadn't used traps due to the possibility of self-inflicted damage, but that's no longer an issue.

Back at the coast she was working on trapping the sirines when she took her first damage.
Spoiler
I really must pay more attention to the weather - with Seguro doing most of her movement in the dark to aid stealth I hadn't even noticed it was raining up to then.  Two of the 3 sirines in the original group died in traps they were dragged into with stealth shots, but that was a ticklish business and the final one was just shot with arrows of biting.
Spoiler
Sil's group was much easier.  Sil herself finally caught up with Seguro on top of some traps.
Spoiler
I thought that would have turned the others hostile, but apparently not.
Spoiler
However, traps triggered by stealth shots quickly sorted out them anyway. Rather than waste arrows of biting the golems were led into traps as well - all the resting to do that meaning most of Seguro's lightning damage was healed by the time that finished.  The final golem got her to level 7 and she slipped marginally further below average with 5 HPs.
Spoiler

Melicamp died before she took her first damage from an enemy - she did have a couple of invisibility potions left, but after already having taken the lightning damage I didn't want to use one (she still had the potion of clarity to respond if the ogre mage had tried to charm her).
Spoiler

Seguro - halfling swashbuckler (2nd and final update)

Seguro continued making her way round the Sword Coast ticking off the reputation quests.  She also got a tome of charisma at the Gnoll Stronghold and pickpocketed Algernon's Cloak, as well as setting more traps for Meilum.

With reputation at 19 she headed north towards Ulgoth's Beard.  She stopped off at the ankheg nest to set more traps to clear a route to the treasure and gave a bit of that to the farmer in return for her last reputation upgrade (for the time being anyway).

With 20/20 purchasing power Seguro had plenty of money to buy ring, amulet and cloak at Ulgoth's Beard along with Necklace of missiles, shield amulet and PfP scroll at the Carnival and the Claw and a potion of magic blocking at High Hedge.

Her last destination before cracking on with the main quest was the basilisk area.  She meleed her way through the basilisks to the south to get to level 8 and a nice 7 HPs took her back to within 0.5 HPs of average.  After meleeing the separated basilisks to the north Seguro set some traps, recruited Korax and then stealth-shot Mutamin with an arrow of biting - dragging him into the fatal traps.

After having set the traps initially I'd had Seguro rest to get some darkness to stealth in - and made a mental note to keep her out of the way while Korax killed the basilisks.  However, mental notes are only any good if you're not - well, mental .  Korax had killed the greater basilisk and was about to attack the lesser one.  Meanwhile my attention was wandering and I clicked to do a party attack on the lesser one.  In vanilla that wouldn't have made any difference, but the SCS basilisk quickly spotted the fatal weakness in Seguro's defences.  If she had been in that position deliberately she could have spotted the attack coming and used a potion, but I wasn't even watching the screen when the basilisk turned its gaze on her ...

Ouch Grond0, old habits and automatisms are dangerous friends in new setups. Does this mean the end of your swashbuckling attemppts, or will you at least try to get another Swashy into Amn?

Fuller walked past Hull, guarding the inner gate with a headache and a frown.

"Forget your sword again, Hull?" Fuller asked, noting that his guardsman's scabbard was empty, once again.

"Yeah," Hull yawned. "Late night."

"Another girl?" Fuller asked. "Which one have you duped this time?"

Hull glared back at Fuller sullenlly. "What I do when I'm off duty is my own business."

"Was it Quin?" Fuller winked. "Gorion's lass? You seem to have eyes for her."

"Umm..." Hull looked away. "You know she's a witch, right? And she wears a slave bracelet. They say she won't take it off -- or can't more likely. She's still claimed property. By somebody dangerous, I'd bet. We should stay away from her. I'd even suggest we ask Gorion to take his little rescue project elsewhere."

"Indeed?" replied Fuller. "Very well then. I'll go have a talk with Gorion. And Hull? Lay off the beer."

Entering Quin the Sorceress; based on a portrait randomly chosen. Same mods: EE, SCS, randomizer (freshly randomized), some tweaks. I'm going to use every trick in the book to try to keep her alive...

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 78 - (2nd and final update)

Cinders, elf dragon disciple (Grond0) & Fraye, halfling priest of Helm (Gate70)

Today's performance with this pairing was less than stellar.  After killing Shoal and doing a bit of work around Beregost Fraye thought that his seeking sword should be able to account for Karlat.  Instead he found his healing potions taking a hammering - could be something to do with not wearing armour at the time :o.

Moving on via Nashkel the duo soon arrived at the basilisk area.  The southern group were killed, although that took some time with Fraye not hitting very hard in melee and Cinders not doing much damage with her darts.  She tried to speed things up by activating her special ability, only to find it wasn't a scorcher effect, but a mushroom that tickled Fraye up nicely along with the basilisk.

Up north Fraye approached a group of 2 basilisks and tried to drag one away on its own.  Cinders retreated to stay out of the line of fire and found that a gnoll had colonized the encounter spot they had just come through.  Cinders decided to lead that away while Fraye made a start on the basilisk, but things didn't go according to plan.  Clicking on a moving target in EE is considerably more difficult than in BGT, which is a pain as we try to minimise pausing when playing.  As a result it was no great surprise when her intended dart cast at the following gnoll turned into movement straight under its nose instead.  Cinders reacted quickly and was only next to the gnoll for an instant.  Normally that would be no problem as the gnoll halberds are slow.  However, in this instance the gnoll had obviously been following closely enough to still be observing combat rounds and she must have caught it part way through the round as the gnoll immediately hit her.  With 24 HPs she would need to be a bit unlucky to die to a single swipe from a gnoll - but it was that sort of a day :(.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 79 - (update 1)

Risqe, elf wild mage (Grond0) & Pallor, half-elf fighter/mage (Gate70)

After our earlier fall we immediately got back on the horse (or possibly dragon) for another try.  Our random selection of character classes has been plumping for lots of mage types recently and another couple came out this time.  At least Pallor can act as an excellent tank - so long as he can survive Risqe's fumbled spell attempts of course.

The duo went immediately north this time to recover the ring of wizardry.  Travelling back to seek out Shoal both of them struggled to survive a bandit ambush, but got away with it.

Spoiler

Pallor was a bit disgruntled when he went to all the effort of killing Shoal and still failed to get a level.  However, a bit more work in Beregost saw him under way as well.

A trip to the Cloud Peaks saw Sendai blinded and shot in order to prevent her archer comrades from going hostile before being tackled themselves.  The same was tried with Vax, but he saved and alerted Zal to trouble coming - not that that ended up helping him much.

Spoiler

Risqe%20L3_zpsxogb3dyc.jpg

Pallor%20L2_2_zpsthh9cind.jpg

Stats:

Risqe, wild mage 3, 28 HPs (incl. 12 from familiar), 16 kills

Pallor, fighter 2 / mage 2, 20 HPs, 18 kills, 0 deaths

@Gate70/Grond0: Sorry to hear of the recent demise of your duo - good luck with the new pair. Pallor indeed should be able to be a good tank for you, and even better one, once you can do some buffs (such as blur, mirror image, improved invisibility, etc.).

Drakonis.org has some nice stuff, but the females tend to be scantilly clad and excessively buxom. For reasonably dressed and proportioned females, check out http://char-portraits.tumblr.com/.

My portraits for Arcadia, Amelie, and Ariel all came from there. In full size, you can see that they're really nice pieces of art and, importantly, the subjects are treated respectfully.

And I agree with you Alesia; there's some questionable anatomy on Drakonis. I like the random portrait feature a lot (but I only pick the ones that provide a spark for a story that I'd want to tell). I imagine that one of these days I'll end up with a lich or a bunny rabbit Bhaalspawn.

I really like that site. And new portraits are added on a regular basis. You have to crop and convert to make them work in BG, but I don't mind that so much. It doesn't take long.  I use Gimp to convert for the Enhanced Edition and this site to convert for the classic engine: http://image.online-.../convert-to-bmp

I got a major bug in my last game so I am starting again with Evel and Isla. Firebead was killed again. The road was cleared to nashkel. A dog and cat were rescued as was a boy in a lighthouse. The archaeologist and Brage were helped. Prism was helped and finally the two of us went into the mines where we killed Mulahey. No major incidents. Indeed, a bit too easy. It makes me suspicious about what the game is going to come up with.

Seguro {2} - halfling swashbuckler (update 1)

After her disappointing end first time around I've restarted Seguro.  She's followed roughly the same course this time, but with one major difference that she paid the temple for 5 reputation upgrades early on in order to achieve reputation of 20 much more quickly.

At level 5 and with reputation at 20 she headed for Ulgoth's Beard, sticking to the back roads as she was still undamaged at that time.  However, travelling through Larswood her stealth failed and in daytime, with no handy shadows nearby, I couldn't be bothered to re-establish it.  That proved costly when she was forced to detour round some undergrowth and came into view of a Black Talon just long enough for him to shoot her.
Spoiler

At Ulgoth's Beard she bought the Cloak, Ring and Amulet.  She added to her collection with a Necklace, another Amulet and a green scroll at the Carnival and a +1 bow in Beregost.  The scroll soon did sterling work at the basilisk area, though there was a bit of other preparation first - Greywolf was run round and shot to get his weapon in case Seguro's scimitar broke.
Spoiler
This time she didn't rest before attacking Mutamin - just to make totally sure she didn't absent-mindedly throw herself at a basilisk while unprotected.  Korax once more demonstrated why mages should beware of saves vs death.
Spoiler

Korax also performed well against Kirian's party - paralysing her immediately and going on to immobilise Baerin before dying.  That allowed Seguro to poison both Kirian and Baerin with arrows of biting before a Necklace charge killed the former.
Spoiler
Seguro used the Greenstone Amulet to attack Peter on his own, but while running him round came across Baerin; he had taken a potion of speed, so there was no evading him - but another Necklace blast did the job (also catching Peter as a bonus).
Spoiler
I had intended to use backstabs on Lindin, but he had an annoying habit of running off as soon as Seguro hid.  After doing that a few times day also broke - and her stealth is not up to that.  Therefore she just reverted to run and shoot for Lindin.
Spoiler

Here's her current record.  Her 35 HPs are 6 below average for this stage, which is a major concern for a character that will be vulnerable to death by damage for a long time to come - I can foresee the need for a lot of stealth and traps!  If the thief skills showing look a bit low, that's the result of having 100 in set traps and 50 in detect illusions at this stage.

Seguro {2} - halfling swashbuckler (update 2)

At the coast Seguro attacked the sirines.  The first group are difficult due to wandering all over the map and not following the direction a stealth shot came from (making it hard to lead them into traps).  That meant the potion of clarity was essentially wasted, but the job was eventually done at the cost of 4 healing potions from the need to fight wandering hobgoblins.  By contrast Sil's group is easy to trap and Seguro then quickly shot the golems with +1 arrows before looting the pick of the treasure in the cave.  That gave her another level and she recovered some of her lost ground with a maximum 8 HPs.  After selling the loot she bought the Claw of Kazgaroth, which is the last item she will want to purchase prior to Baldur's Gate (other than the odd bit of ammunition).

Her final objective before cracking on with the main quest was Meilum's bracers. Two traps there meant a couple of arrows were enough to finish him off.
Spoiler

She used invisibility to go through the Nashkel mine and set traps for Mulahey's support troops.  Stealth shots and a further trap then made Mulahey panic and he was shot down.
Spoiler

Back in Nashkel a trap placed under Nimbul's feet sent him running and a LMD finished him off.
Spoiler
Moving on to Beregost the arrow of biting that opened proceedings against Tranzig would have had him in trouble anyway, but the trap in the doorway finished the job.
Spoiler

Seguro was just looking for an innocent to slay and somewhere to get caught stealing in Beregost when Molkar turned up inside one of the houses.
Spoiler
She was on her way out anyway, so just kept running and went somewhere else to reduce her reputation to 9.

At the Bandit Camp she stealthed into the main tent and set some traps before buffing with shield and Greenstone and opening with a fireball.
Spoiler
She successfully restealthed immediately after that, so was able to follow up with another one.
Spoiler
That left only Hakt and one black talon alive and they failed to get the critical needed to pierce her defenses.

She's just started her journey through the Cloakwood.

Seguro {2} - halfling swashbuckler (update 3)

In the Cloakwood Seguro's invisibility ring let her wave at several spider ambushes as she wandered past (stealth at the other end meant resting to get another use of the ring was not a problem).

At the mine she set up a series of traps before throwing a couple of fireballs in.  After the second (which she could see from the damage reports hit everyone) she ran away as fast as possible only to see this message:
Spoiler
I have noticed before that spook is a spell which can sometimes be cast even when the target is out of sight.  It's targeting icon is quite slow though and Seguro had the opportunity to run off the map, but chose to use a potion of magic blocking instead.
Spoiler

She then had a difficult battle with Genthore and Drasus, who tried to double-team her (Genthore using a potion of speed).  She used a number of fireballs, but also received several criticals in return - such as this one

and had to go invisible 3 times.  She was also regularly irritated that Drasus appeared to have both an infinite number of rages and no cool-down period in between them.  However, after Genthore was eventually fireballed to death she was able to run and hit against Drasus - by timing her attacks just after Drasus made an abortive swing at her running form she was normally able to get an unopposed attack in and finally managed to get a couple of hits.  The second of those proved fatal when Drasus' latest enrage ran out.
Spoiler

Rezdan was already injured and arrows of cold interrupted several spells despite his stoneskins until he'd had enough.
Spoiler
Kysus had foolishly not got stoneskins up and an arrow of biting followed by a dispelling of invisibility / mirrors set him up for the kill.

That encounter had drained more resources than I had hoped (pre-laid traps that were intended to kill Drasus had been wasted on a wandering Rezdan), but despite that Seguro pressed on into the mine.  Sneaking down to find Davaeorn she activated him and then dodged his dimension doors before settling down to wait for all the guests to arrive.  While doing that she used stealth attacks on one of the battle horrors - that took quite a long time as she needed a 17 to hit even from stealth (using a non-proficient weapon didn't help), but eventually she got the kill

and went to see what the guest list looked like.  You know how everyone crowds into the kitchen during parties ...
Spoiler

Davaeorn was near enough to her for Seguro to use a stealth shot and retreat before anyone reacted and she worked through stoneskins with ordinary arrows before switching to arrows of biting.  Davaeorn has very good saving throws against death, by mage standards, and it took Seguro over 20 arrows before she eventually got one to stick.
Spoiler
It then needed just one more ordinary arrow to finish the job.  She rested to get a second Bhaal horror before flooding the mine.

Completing a few outstanding reputation quests, including successfully restoring Melicamp, got Seguro to level 9 and her good streak continued with another maximum - she's now back to just 1 HP below average.  I did though mis-click on Hafiz - so Seguro missed out on a free PfM scroll before finally arriving in Baldur's Gate.
