The Grey Gekko fell at last to one of those ghasts that had done so much to make him powerful. He got held. :(

Will try another run through with the same character.

Sorry Wise, the undead are gonna start getting cocky now.

Bg-scs30 update 1.1,

First tenuous steps;

Hear text as mp3,

Well feel sorry for me because my dad just died… I know bo hoo right. Hay Imoen, yes I need help but I don't want a Druid yet sorry… "huh what ya mean you’re a bard?" … ok my mistake, lets get to the fai.

We picked up two new bodies on the road… shady looking types but a girls gotta make do with what's available, then a very rude wizard tried to jump us right on the steps of fai:
Doom, command and kick!

Spoiler

Hi aunty J, and off to the mines we go… mind the bandits and lets show this Wolf bloke who's the boss… not exactly to plan perhaps but any battle you can limp away from is a win at our level.

Note to self, don't stand near colour spray.

Sorry Wise, the undead are gonna start getting cocky now.

I'm not used to the SCS ghasts yet. The improved AI makes a big difference.

In the next run I am going to follow my own advice and NOT fight them. :) I was obviously getting TOO cocky myself having killed 9 of them solo.

Congrats Corey.

Hi all, it's my pleasure to announce the return of Norgath, Dwarven Bounty Hunter of Candlekeep.

I don't expect to have much time to play these weeks, so any updates won't cover large parts of the game. This includes this first update.

As you might remember Norgath is not a very nice guy. He's not your friend, and if he helps people out it has to be because he sees profit somewhere. It's thus that he started out acting the nice guy for people along the Coast Way, helped by Lord Foreshadow's Ring of Human Influence (because with his gruff demeanor and his scarry face he noticed people like Mrs Blackwood, whose children needed a babysitter, simply refused to have dealings with him).
Thus far he's exterminated Spiders for Landrin, eliminated a rogue Ogre, slain two bounty hunters that were after his hide (Neira with ranged attacks, and Tarnesh with backstab + ranged), found Brun's son for Brun and a bowl for Tenya (using stealth in the Ankheg den), finished a band of Hobgoblins that carried a pair of Boots of Stealth, befriended Noober, pickpocketed Algernon, brought Mirianne a message, fetched a book for Firebead, placated Marl, rescued Melicamp (only to see him killed by Thalantyr's magic), exacted revenge for Bjornin on four Half-Ogres, protected Charleston Nib, tracked down Brage, saved a Dryad's tree, located a dead cat, and taken out two Half-Ogres guarding a bridge.

There was little risk in all, but still two uncomfortable moments presented themselves. After picking up the CHA tome, Norgath dallied a bit while making his way out of the cave, causing him to be surrounded by Xvarts. With no critical hit protection and no good gear yet, this could gotten ugly. However the Dwarf had plenty of healing potions, and used two of them while fighting his way past the runts.

Spoiler
The other unpleasant moment was when Norgath got a bit cocky when facing a Winter Wolf. The animal proved to be out of his league, due again to the lack of critical hit protection and of enchanted, protective gear.
Spoiler
Norgath has just done some shopping though (Claw of Kazgaroth, Shadow Armor, Deep Red Ioun Stone, Greenstone Amulet, Necklace of Missiles, Cloak of Deflection, Sound Defense Short Sword +2, Composite Shortbow +2), so incidents like the former are perhaps not less likely to occur, but less likely to be dangerous.

Character record and inventory screen:

Spoiler
Weapon profs are: * Short Swords, * Shortbows, * Two Weapon Fighting. Thieving skills of note are Move Silently and Set Traps.

GL to Norgath (2nd?).

Anyhow, inspired by Grond0's own Wrecking Crew, I built my own.

Here they be:

Protagonist, halfling fighter Rikimaru (yea, I played Dota back in the days...)

2_zpselmcdhav.jpg

Weapon of choice - sling.

A dwarven berserker called Razfal

1_zpsd0dwnjmb.jpg

Uses 2-handed swords.

A dwarven barbarian called Hax

3_zpsqhwbnehv.jpg

Uses bastard swords, if we live to BG2 he will be dual-wielding.

A halfling Wizard Slayer called Mirtis

4_zpsbkzjo0ky.jpg

Uses short bows.

And finally, a Dwarven Defender called Larthun.

5_zpssi5jtuy4.jpg

Sword & shield style, axes & hammers. (Kit is my own, description here).

Weidu:

Spoiler

In short; Ascension/BGT/Revisions/Refinements/SCS/my own tweaks.

I'm gonna post only the most notable/dangerous moments so far  - there isn't much to write about in terms of spells/strategies whatnot.  :D

Since my protagonist is a ranged combatant, I found out that talking to Firebead with anybody else other than protagonist makes him "stupefied".

We "destupefied" him with great joy.

6_zpsn2twoh59.jpg

We had our first (so far, only) death vs Bassilus who burnt Razfal to a crisp with a Flamestrike.

7_zpsze5wmnza.jpg

he died when his Physical Mirror finally expired.

8_zpsobp5spzp.jpg

Concentration lapse meant Hazif needed to die. All in the glory of Pro Magic scroll  - that's a shame really, I like that guy.

9_zps2sdlw3hv.jpg

One battle that cost some hp was Bandit camp - I was too quick to throw Fire oils and had some difficulty with poison arrows they shooted, but all was well.

10_zpssvtvoxb0.jpg

The party is currently in Cloakwood, exiting Spider area after aquiring Spider's Bane for Razfal to use; everybody is level 6 and about 10K shy from level 7.

Rikimaru & co, 2nd (final) BG1 update

Mine entrance battle had us suffer 2nd death of the run. They opened up with Waves of Fatigue (SR Chaos substitute, -2 to THAC0, damage, casting speed, movement rate, no save), we just attack.

11_zpswdfdnzal.jpg

Drasus, being a berserker, suffers from trash AC  - we make him pay for that.

12_zpscpnebyrf.jpg

Disables fly in - Malison, Glitterdust, Slow, Charm. I'm happy no Confusion...Genthore is the next soft target and is focused down.

13_zpsvzc8pyw0.jpg

Hax, my barbarian dies to two Flame Arrows. He survived the first cast, but the second one does much damage and he's dead. This means trip back to FAI for revival...grr.

14_zpsar8kqhjr.jpg

Rezdan dies, the other mage goes invisible.

15_zpsdynkw6jy.jpg

Fin, Kysus reveals himself and is nailed down.

16_zps14vbwghb.jpg

We return to FAI (incredible, no ambush on the way there), raise Hax and return to exterminate mine guards.

Davaeorn - Pro Magic scroll on Mirtis (WS), rest of the party in the small room. Mage makes us pay for sticking together with a less-than-gentle fireball attack...I was glad he TP'd away as he did it. :D

17_zpshwbukwfo.jpg

Battle was fairly longish, Mirtis was constantly chased by a Horror and couldn't fire arrows as  quickly as he should. Davaeorn also delivered hefty damage with Melfs.

18_zpsuvlybtny.jpg

Still, we emerge victorious, and suffer no losses.

19_zpsr2cmvlk5.jpg

I didn't bother much in the city, I did found out that Marek can be killed before he approaches even if not stunned. :P

20_zpswcgczg2h.jpg

Stole the documents invisible, back to Candlekeep, kill everybody that deserves it, back to city, fight Krystin & Slythe. I didn't use Pro Magic scroll, but it didn't matter. Slythe delivers one backstab attempt on barbarian and dies.

21_zpszljcjxtl.jpg

Krystin manages to pull of a Charm (two actually), meaning we cannot escape the area.  Hence we kill her as well.

22_zps9clxpytq.jpg

23_zpsj7bhiag9.jpg

I wait for the charms to expire, heal up with potions, and off to ceremony. There, dope mage is focused down. He lives for two rounds, but casts nothing but Mirror images. With him gone, the battle is mostly done.

24_zpspcdnol5x.jpg

Sarevok kills Liia and leaves.

25_zpsjvkqyifj.jpg

I use scrolls & potions to get through the maze, invisibility to skip to Sarevok's den and we prepare ourselves for our final BG1 battle.

There weren't much preperations - Pro Magic on WS, Oil of Speed, Potion of Defense (he's wearing a leather armor, since with it he retains his DEX bonuses and it helps with weapon speed). Everybody else is invisible. Opener - hit a bat with Detonation arrow.

26_zpsdttqzfpz.jpg

Dance around and toss Detonations until people start dying..

Tazok first.

27_zpsyz8crjr0.jpg

Semaj 2nd.

28_zpskhkgzuhc.jpg

Diramid 3rd, getting a taste of his own poisonous medicine.

29_zpsw5b4dzne.jpg

Angelo hid himself somewhere and I couldn't find him a while. Mirtis kills the skeletons, and then he shows up. Nice job, Angelo. He should have used that spell long ago....

30_zpsscy61llk.jpg

I wait for his Detect Invis to expire, buff up the rest of the gang (last thing I need here is getting someone confused) and get them in.

31_zpsycdpliyw.jpg

We kill him, he manages to get a Slow/Acid Arrow in and that's it.

32_zpsksdf0uen.jpg

READY!

33_zpskaa2sbeg.jpg

First attack in is an Arm Hit - THAC0 penalty of -10 for one round. Get him lads!

34_zps2bmu4ang.jpg

He gives up in 8 seconds.

35_zpsptcimflo.jpg

Rikimaru will enter BG2 challenge soon.

Doh! Wrong thread - moved to BG 2 thread.

It makes me feel better that I am not the only one to do that. :(

The Grey Gecko returns, only this time with a dwarven friend who is a chaotic good (cleric of tempus)/(ranger).

Just arrived at Durlag's Tower. Let's see how those ghasts fare this time. :)

Grey Gecko is level 2, and Fyrmyn Firehair level 1 so coming at this stage, they are pushing it a bit. :)

Hello everyone!

I'll be joining the challenge with a randomly generated character (gender, race and class), allowing myself 5 re-rerolls on attributes. There will also be no dual/multi classing for the CHARNAME.

The rules are as follows:

·         BG complete, core difficulty

·         SCS mode (with several exceptions applicable)

·         no reload

·         no resurrection of party members

·         no “hidden” items (Ring of Wizardry, Ankegh Plate, wands etc.)

I will appreciate and consider and additional "self-imposed" limitations you may come up with, that would make the gameplay more interesting (not necessarily more difficult)

As for the NPCs, I purposely won’t be recruiting Kivan, Viconia and Ajantis early on (for being slightly "off the track"), however I shall allow myself to split the existing NPC pairs.

I’ll be back with the outcome of the character creation and some early exploits.

B.

Btw. I respect your decision to skip the easter egg items. I tend to use them, and there is no doubt in my mind that they unbalance the game. I only take them for one reason: laziness- pure and simple. BG1 plays better without them.

I've always found the Hard Times mod interesting. Again, laziness prevents me from using it. I think it makes a lot of sense though. It removes the easter egg items, limits wand charges, and increases item prices, befitting a crisis. I love the idea. You may find it interesting as well, although trying it on your first no reload attempt may not be the best move.

Turk - dwarf swashbuckler (update 1)

After the brute force methods of the Wrecking Crew I thought perhaps I should have another go at the softly, softly approach with a swashbuckler.  I would still like to avoid taking damage in BG1 with one of these, but this run I thought I'd try putting early skill points into set traps rather than open locks.  That did mean that a few encounters become easy early on (like Silke).
Spoiler
The major downside though is that it made acquiring invisibility potions early on difficult - as a result Turk relied on luck to avoid damage from a couple of kobold arrows in one ambush before she had any potions available.

She did the basilisks relatively soon and the 2 extra levels for that allowed her to improve her lock-picking and go back and steal a couple more invisibility potions as well as getting the one from Lindin (though it took ages to track down him and Peter who were wandering all over the map).  Her total stock acquired of 5 was reduced by a hobgoblin ambush and again when Greywolf took a potion of speed and it seemed too dangerous to try and run for the edge of the map (I should have just used traps on him).  The same could also have been said when I tried to hurry things up by killing a skeleton with LMD and it got an immediate shot off with a dagger.

At the lighthouse the first group of sirines are a problem because they wander around so much.  Two of them walked into traps, but Turk tried stealth-shooting the third and it eventually noticed him just before it was dead.  A failed hide meant another invisibility potion was needed - now down to 2.  Sil's group are much easier and their death took Turk to level 8 before she took on the golems.  However, when leading one of them outside Turk failed to move in response to a mouse click and I didn't respond quickly enough thereafter - resulting in her first damage.
Spoiler

Initially I was thinking to give up there, but I don't think a restart would have fared any better - by that stage she'd been shot at at least 4 times and I wasn't really in the mood for being careful anyway.  Thus I just continued and lapsed more into the sort of style associated with the Wrecking Crew!  I wasn't too precise about movement against the Doomsayer - at least until Turk was approaching death and she made sure she only attacked while hidden and against a static target!
Spoiler
There was a very similar sequence at Durlag's Tower against the second of the battle horrors where Turk took an awful lot of attempted stealth attacks before finally killing it - in the meantime taking several hits when trying to attack a moving target.
Spoiler
She used the potion of clarity from Candlekeep to get the tome there.

There were more fun and games on the way to Ulgoth's Beard when Turk invaded the ankheg nest.  She had taken the precaution of using 2 green scrolls of acid protection and for a while that looked like wasted money as the first 5 ankhegs died without hitting.  The next one though got 2 criticals - though she used a potion of regeneration between them.  The one after also got a critical, as did the one after that (by which time the regeneration had finished).
Spoiler
She managed to finish things off safely though, getting up to level 9 in the process.

Here's Turk's current record.  You can see what a winsome dwarf maiden she is.  The reason for that is she loves having her portrait done and is willing to make a special effort on her appearance to get a good one - in this case she's even shaved her beard off!

Thanks for the feedback and pleasant welcome. I might try Hard Times in later playthroughs, however shall gladly skip this for now.

Anyway, the character creation yielded me Lorn, a half-elven Priest of Talos. I have to admit I really wanted to avoid evil cleric due to lack of Holy Smite and that annoying Turn Undead feature, however the generator (i.e. dice) was adamant :).

lorn1_zpszebdcucn.jpg

Lorn left Candlekeep after having had completed various messenger errands and earning enough money buy the heaviest armor she could possibly carry from that "fat greedy innkeep infidel". Following the fatal events of that night she joined forces with trusty Imoen and thereafter also recruited the services of that lunatic/fanatic duo of Montaron and Xzar. Together they have defeated several aggressive inhabitants of the woods (including shrieking gibberlings, smelly Xvarts and wolves) as well as a lonely ogre, which eventually resulted in Imoen turning into a dude thanks to that "stupid belt".

This merry party eventually reached Friendly Arm Inn, where they have beaten bloody the chatty wannabe assassin-mage. So far so good.

Turk - dwarf swashbuckler (2nd and final update)

At Ulgoth's Beard Turk made all her desired purchases before trapping Dushai on her way out - the ring of free action meant she wouldn't need to worry about giant spider ambushes.

Before going to the Nashkel Mine she returned to Durlag's Tower to do some more basilisk hunting.  She had bought 4 mirror potions and used the first on the lesser basilisk.  The second accounted for the first greater basilisk and got a couple of hits on the second one before she refreshed it with a third.  That finished off the second basilisk and, after moving to the final one, I had calculated she could safely get 5 attacks in before renewing it.  The first attack hit, as did the second and the third.  I thought 2 more hits would definitely kill it, but the 4th attack missed.  The final one was a good shot though and I thought the basilisk must be very close to death.  As a result I decided to gamble by using LMD rather than take the final potion.  Regrettably the basilisk survived and Turk immediately turned to run - trying to get out of sight in order to hide and finish it off with a stealth shot.  She just about made it out of sight, but her protective icon winked out with a gaze attack already in mid-air ...

@Grond0 - you know, Basilisks seem to be your arch nemesis in BG 1 - they seem to get even more than Sarevok does. Perhaps its because they induce your gambling nature, and that their reward is so much more than most monsters in BG so you can't avoid tempting your fate with them...
