Just building up for a big finish .

Close.  I generated a random character class - which was conjuror.  I didn't fancy doing that since I did an all mage run not that long ago.  The next random option was blades, so I'll see how I get on with 6 of those.

Edit.  Acting on a faint memory I checked my Photobucket account and see I have done an all bard run before, so I think I should choose a different class.  The third random selection was a cleric/mage which would be just too much overkill on spells!  The fourth selection was monks.  That also rings faint bells, but if I've done that before it must have been on my old Photobucket account and I'll settle for that.

Six monks! Sounds interesting, Grond0! Best of luck with them. When Millen succeeds/bites the dust, I intend to roll 6 human fighters, then dual to thief in BG 2. Perhaps they can be a sort of parallel runs, though your runs are so fast...

Sorry to witness the premature end of your character, Borco. Wish you fare better with next one.

My most recent tactic for fighting Zordral is to charm The Great Gazib and lure Zordral outside.

Then let them fight it out, attacking Zordral when he has few spells left.

The biggest danger is that The Great Gazib will kill an innocent with a lightning bolt, so positioning needs to be watched.

If the Great Gazib is killed, at least you have a free mage's robe. :D

If Zordral is killed, you get a free mage's robe. :D

The Mighty Midgets Continued

We decided that we were at last strong enough to take on Tristan and Isolde and we were right. :)

We have helped Rufie, a dryad and a dead cat. We killed Vax and friend and also killed 6 winter wolves, an ogre-mage, Gnarl and Hairtooth

I'm wondering which are the best bracers to use for archery, ones that increase Dex by 2 or ones that increase AC by 2. Guidance would help. :)

I'd vote 6 bards. 1 Jester, 3 Blades, and 2 Skalds.

My vote is similar. 5 bards, all Skalds. 1 Assassin.

Best,

A.

In BG1, you should be able to land >270 damage backstabs.

Even without Misleads or other illusions, you should be able to top 900 in BG2.

Tell me that isn't tempting?  :P

Best,

A.

Phantasmic Six - monks party (update 1)

Right.  After a day of pain yesterday I'm looking forward to - a repeat dose today ...

I don't have high hopes for a party of monks in this installation.  Saving throws were a major issue for the Wrecking Crew and the monks will be significantly worse off than them while not having the same firepower.  That was clear in their first encounter when they were unable to quickly kill Xzar and Montaron and Spectre paid the price.
Spoiler
Not long afterwards they had a second death when they performed terribly trying to get a skull from some skeletons.
Spoiler

On the plus side, with a whole party of monks it's really noticeable how fast they run round the place - and that speed was put to the test when Spectre successfully stayed ahead of Greywolf for some time after he took a potion of speed.  Once that had run out he was toast.
Spoiler
Shortly after that a ghast in the same area pushed everyone up to level 2.
Spoiler

Even with that HP boost though, everyone is still very vulnerable to criticals - as Spook demonstrated in an ambush (Spirit got away with just 1 HP left as well).
Spoiler

Most of the time they've been using missile weapons, but they have used monk abilities on a number of occasions.  The best of those was probably Karlat - with them at L1 Karlat would have had a decent chance at killing them all in melee - or at least he would have done if only he could move ...
Spoiler

Here's their leader - right everyone, let's all count how many arms and legs we have ...

Thanks Alesia.  It would be nice, but I can't really see it happening.  However, they have made reasonable progress to date despite continuing to rack up casualties ...

Phantasmic Six - monks party (update 2)

In the Cloud Peaks the group shot down Sendai eventually - even only hitting on criticals.
Spoiler
Her archer friends were potentially lethal, but fortunately one of them succumbed to a stealthy stunning blow.  Alexander though took a potion of speed and the monks then had the unenviable job of trying to dart in and out of melee to stop him keeping his bow equipped - they were successful just in time to avoid casualties.
Spoiler
Vax was much easier to hit and died without talking, meaning it was easy to gang up on Zal - though not before a winter wolf got everyone to level 3.
Spoiler

Moving on Caldo & Krumm never saw their doom coming.
Spoiler

There was a very dangerous moment when they were travelling to the Gnoll Stronghold.  An ambush appeared to be just gnolls and rather than bothering with those the party were running for the edge of the map.  Before they got there though an ogre mage appeared and 3 of the party fell asleep.
Spoiler
Wraith died to magic missiles, but Spirit and Spectre kept the enemies occupied and were down to the ogre mage when the others recovered to help finish off.
Spoiler

On the way back to Nashkel the party took on Borda - successfully spreading enough damage around to avoid any more deaths.
Spoiler

Looking for a bit more reputation they went to find a half-ogre clan, but couldn't resist a tempting mage target nearby.  The opening went well, but Wraith then suffered a critical one-shot before the party stood off and missiled Teyngan to death.
Spoiler

I initially forgot to pick up her equipment, but the +1 sword she dropped was still there when the party got back from the temple :) .

At the coast helping out Charleston Nib got Wraith to level 4 (her 2 deaths meaning she's now slightly behind the others).
Spoiler
An excellent set of rolls for the first time got the party back to only slightly below the average of 29.5 HPs each at this stage.  They have activated the Doomsayer, but sneaked past it to get a lift with Brage back to Nashkel.

Phantasmic Six - monks party (update 3)

The monks are continuing to make progress and have completed most of the hard work in BG1.  Played sensibly the rest of that would be pretty easy - so things definitely still hanging in the balance .

Still working on reputation they briefly visited the basilisk area to revive a statue.  They had to move fast to escape the ambush on the way out, but did so safely.
Spoiler

Their next challenge was the ankheg nest.  The tactics there were essentially for all but one of the group to sneak up close to an ankheg before the final one showed themselves - meaning the others were all attacking with a melee bonus.
Spoiler
Typically that only gave an ankheg 1 attack and they only got a couple of hits in.

With 20/20 shopping they were just able to afford everything useful at Ulgoth's Beard.  With no particular intention to come back they marked their exit with an assault on Dushai - with 5 of them attacking from stealth he never knew what hit him (and none of the village appeared to notice his disappearance either).
Spoiler

On their way to the lighthouse area they encountered another ogre mage.  A particular difficulty with those is that they start invisible and therefore don't trigger the auto-pause enemy in sight even when they appear.  Although I reacted pretty quickly this time that still meant that its opening sleep spell tried to affect 5 of the party - and 4 of them went down!
Spoiler
The one that saved was absolutely crucial though as the ogre mage's spells would have killed just one character on its own and the others would have died before they awoke.  As it was, Chimera and Spook were able to display the ogre mage's body to the others when they sat up.
Spoiler
Chimera actually used his CLW ability in that fight - I think possibly for the first time in action, although it auto-casts frequently on resting.

There was another difficult fight with the first group of sirines.  The opening assault wasn't bad with 5 of them sneaking in for stunning attacks.  One of the sirines was stunned, but the other 2 managed to go invisible.  At one stage one of the party was confused and 2 charmed, but the rest kept attacking in melee to prevent arrows of biting being used and eventually triumphed.
Spoiler
There was a postscript to the fight however.  I was treating the confused character as feebleminded when he suddenly lashed out - taking Chimera to within 1 HP of death!
Spoiler

Sil was drawn away out of sight to make her companions easier.  They were not stunned, but still died fairly quickly - although Chimera was charmed and did a fair amount of damage to his party in the meantime.
Spoiler
Sil was not so lucky after the party rested and went to find her.  Spook then ran round the golems while everyone else used magical ammunition to shoot them.
Spoiler
Taunting a few wolves was then enough to get everyone to level 5.
Spoiler

Moving north along the coast they tried resting before taking on Shoal, but discovered 3 ogre berserkers instead.  The empty encounter spot nearby then filled up during that battle, but things were going fine until I didn't realise one of the ogres was in range of Spirit and a one-shot critical followed.  The others took advantage of a free raise dead from Shoal before Droth was stunned into silence.
Spoiler
They tried to be greedy and get a reward from Shoal as well as killing her, but she was too quick for that .
Spoiler

After beating up the ogre clan they went to find the last group of sirines, but had a bit of a ghoul problem on the way
Spoiler
- luckily the Surgeon was on hand with healing before they completed their elimination of the sirine menace.

Alright, let us retry!

Thorgeir Hamundarson, human Skald, 1st entry:

This time my dice generator gave me a human Skald . I went NG to eventually get a pseudo-dragon familiar (although I find LN and TN alignments to be somewhat more "skaldic" from a role-playing perspective) and was lucky enough to roll decent stats. As a respectable norseman, he opted for spears as weapon of choice (along with the long bow for utility).

thorgeir1_zpsntmibsbn.jpg

Thorgeir picked up Imoen just outside Candlekeep and together they travelled to Beregost with the intention of obtaining a Find Familiar scroll from Feldepost’s Inn. Unfortunately for them, Feldepost’s Inn doesn’t sell any Find Familiar scrolls! Instead they have recruited Kagain, cleaned a houseful of spiders with arrows and proceeded to try their luck at the mage’s tower to the west.

In the woods around High Hedge they encountered an elf named Kivan and Thorgeir got so touched by his heroic vendetta quest that he offered him to tag along (I was kinda forced to break one of my self-imposed rules not to recruit him early on ). The party then defeated plentiful of skeletons and gnolls before reaching the tower itself, wherein a solemn but fair barter has been made with Thalantyr.

Low bardic experience thresholds allowed Thorgeir to reach lvl 2 soon. With a valuable assistance of his freshly summoned familiar, the four of them fought and sang their way north to FAI in order to seek additional help from Jaheria (poor Khalid did not qualify and was left behind).

Back in Beregost, the combination doom/spook/pseudo-dragon’s sleep allowed us take a swift revenge on Karlat and Silke for the casualties they had caused to Lorn’s team.

thorgeir2_zpsqszjzhj8.png

Thereafter, mad Bassilus, his minions as well as the neighboring hobgoblins have fallen to the song-enhanced firepower, which generated some nice booty for everyone involved. We had also tried to save that talking abomination of a chicken, but unfortunately Thalantyr's anti-chickenator incantation proved to be fatal to it/him.

Finally, in order to end the blood feud caused by Zordral's recent killing of Lorn, the party travelled to Naskhel to attend the local carnival. Once there, they have succesfully released a warrior maiden from her stone prison and accepted her pledge to follow Thorgeir to his death. While the others prepared a trap outside, she rushed into the the tent, taunted that mage “bozo” and immediately managed to silence him with a single spell. Running around helpless only with the staff to his aid, he was chopped to pieces by the whole crew in no time. That girl’s got some balls!

Phantasmic Six - monks party (update 4)

At the Valley of the Tombs the Revenant fell to a combined assault from the party's 5 magic melee weapons (including 3 daggers).
Spoiler
Inside the ghast tomb I initially tried tanking with Spectre wearing the ring of free action, but she was taking too much damage and they turned to run.  That proved too late though as Spectre was hit again during the transition - her dead body thumping to the ground outside.
Spoiler
After sneaking in to pick up equipment the monks went to pray at the temple before returning to pray for the souls of the ghasts.  They also sneaked up on Narcillicus (with only 2 long swords I didn't fancy their chances against the mustard jellies).
Spoiler

At the Carnival they bought a PFP scroll and also paid a visit to Zordral.  He resisted a number of stunning blows, but eventually succumbed.
Spoiler

Returning to the basilisk area Phantom soloed the basilisks, while the others helped out by shooting down Mutamin without letting him talk.  I decided not to bother with Korax this time and that decision seemed reasonable when both Peter and Kirian were stunned fairly early on.
Spoiler
Lindin got some hard hits in, but the outcome was never really in doubt.
Spoiler

With not much more intended before starting the main quest the party went to Durlag's Tower.  Pathfinding problems there meant they found it difficult to attack the first battle horror, while it was given an unintended extra attack on Phantom - that death meaning that all the rest of Chimera's party have died at least once.

After making use of their season ticket at the temple the monks came back to try again.  Even with 5 of them surrounding a battle horror in stealth and attacking none of them even got a hit in and I decided melee was going to be too much hassle - and resorted to the wand of the heavens for the first time.
Spoiler
The other battle horrors got similar treatment before the monks went to recover the tome - finding Riggilo an irresistable target on the way.  Two greater dopplegangers had respawned outside, but their haste wasn't sufficient to catch the monks and killing those got everyone to level 6.
Spoiler

At the Nashkel Mine stealth attacks killed the kobold chieftain, but they had trouble getting past the kobold shaman (who starts invisible) when his horror affected all 3 of the monks that had been attacking the chieftain.  By the time he was dead the group had taken quite a lot of damage and 2 of the scared monks seemed bent on inviting more enemies to the party.
Spoiler
The others went to support them, but unfortunately Spirit wandered through a trap and died.
Spoiler

After restoring everyone the party went to tick off one more loose end by getting Meilum's bracers.  He got one hit in and saved against a number of stunning blows - at least until the final one that killed him.
Spoiler

Back at the mine Mulahey was already at near death when he was stunned and his army didn't provide much support.  Unsurprisingly, Nimbul fared even worse against a stealthed assault
Spoiler
and even the better equipped Tranzig couldn't survive.
Spoiler

The monks have just been escorted to the Bandit Camp by Teven.  This time I made sure they shot missiles from a wide circle while one of them ran Tazok round inside that circle.  Once more he used a potion of speed, but this time Phantom was able to intercept and successfully block him when he tried to run away.  He turned round to go back the other way, but didn't get far.
Spoiler

Stats:
Chimera - L6, 37 HPs, 87 kills
Spectre - L6, 47 HPs, 76 kills, 2 deaths
Phantom  - L6, 49 HPs, 71 kills, 1 death
Wraith - L6, 47 HPs, 87 kills, 2 deaths
Spook - L6, 46 HPs, 75 kills, 2 deaths
Spirit - L6, 31 HPs, 65 kills, 3 deaths

Looking good Grond0. So, looking ahead, there looks to be quite the argument in your party who will get the monk gauntlets in the Fish City. Should be fun. Perhaps your monks should be using the Fear Wands too? They are usable by clerics, and thus monks.

Safe and hapy travels for Borco's Skald and Grond0's Phantasmic Monks :)

Norgath, Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 3rd BG1 report

Norgath hasn't been up to much though he did accomplish one important feat, so here's a quick update. He reached the Cloakwood in good order, acquired a Cloak of Non-Detection (a welcome item at that stage of his adventuring career). And repeatedly entering and leaving a cabin for backstabbing purposes, the Dwarf slew four Druids at the behest of a nobleman from Baldur's Gate.
Deeper in the forest the rogue agreed to locate a lost boy that had wandered off to slay Spiders with an enchanted blade that interested him, Spiders' Bane. A scroll of PfPoison and a potion of freedom greatly facilitated the Dwarf's efforts against the arachnids. The boy and - more important to Norgath - Spiders' Bane were soon found. Alas, the boy was dead and Spiders' Bane was a two-hander he had little use for. On the flipside, Norgath reached level 9 here, which made his backstabs all the more powerful.

More freedom potions helped Norgath handle Giant Spider ambushes on his way to the Iron Throne base. He found it, a mine, guarded by a handful of fighters with plain armor and weapons, and by a party of four more dangerous looking figures: two warriors with enchanted armor and weapons, and two wizards. The Dwarf waited till nightfall to take advantage of the dark. He killed two guards that stood by a bridge near the four elites, and another guard in an outhouse that he intended to use for stealth purposes. He then set four of his snares close to the four elite guards, and took out one of the wizards with a single thrust of his short sword.

Spoiler
The other wizard survived a backstab, but panicked after suffering trap damage and fire damage from Norgath's Necklace of Missiles.
Spoiler
He fled and would not show himself again. The warriors succumbed to trap damage, ranged attacks and backstabs. One of them had a pair of Boots of Speed. Norgath put them on, put his Boots of Stealth in his pack, and entered the mine.

The bounty hunter stealthily explored the place, avoiding the guards but speaking with the miners for information. Norgath had reservations about their proposition to the flood the mine, it was a fully functional mine with untarnished iron ore, but he decided to go along with the plan after consulting with a fellow Dwarf he released from a prison cell, Yeslick. Yeslick offered to join Norgath but the rogue declined as he preferred to work alone. They agreed to have an ale at the FAI though, as soon as the business with the mine was behind them.
Norgath found the master of the mine, a mage named Davaeorn with two Battle Horrors, in a lair far below the surface. Laziness and a dearth of anti-magic potions made Norgath decide to read a green scroll of Protection from Magic. Having nothing to fear from Davaeorn, Norgath first took out the Battle Horrors with sneak attacks. It was then only a matter of time before Norgath's incessant range attacks and sword thrusts did away with Davaeorn's protections, and ultimately, the wizard's life.

Spoiler
(The image shows another hostile wizard. That's Stephan who had taken offense to being affected by a Necklace of Missiles Fireball's friendly fire.)

Norgath helped himself to Davaeorn's coffers, flooded the mine, and left the Cloakwood behind him. He had a couple of ales with Yeslick at the FAI and has just arrived in Baldur's Gate.

@Blackraven. Nice work with Norgath. Maze Traps are just around the corner!

@Grond0. Keep those monks alive! Let them drink!

Best,

Btw. @Corey. There are some usability bugs surrounding monks and wands. In some installs, monks can use mage wands, in some they can use cleric wands- likely because someone neglected to fill in the "unusable by" fields when the monk class was added to the game. People have different views on what should be allowed. I'm not sure what Grond0's take on monk's and wands is, nor can we be certain that they are available to his monks in his install. In my install, monks can't use Wands of Fear.

Yes there is definitely difference in installs as far as wands and monks go. While I realize that BG and PnP don't always jive, nevertheless, a monk is supposed to be able to use cleric usable wands in PnP, and in that case, that's what I'm inclined to go with myself. To each his/her own. As an example, the 1st bullet on this web site clearly says monks are supposed to use cleric hit dice, as well as cleric wands and scrolls.

Yes. That's one view. And it's a defensible view. I respect that approach: cleric wands, but not mage wands.

Not too surprising though. In a quad run not too long ago, we had two monks in the party and they didn't start to get powerful until about the middle of SoA. They are pretty vulnerable in BG 1, as they can hardly rely on their stealth working with only 10 points a level. They have speed in their favor, but that's not much help if magic or missiles are coming their way, not to mention no critical hit protection either.

Bertha, entering BG1 challenge

Setup - Ascension/BGT/BGSpawn (just to keep me on my toes through BG1! :P )/SCS/aTweaks, no Revisions

1_zpssm4nr2eo.jpg

She will be using a halfling animation in-game since otherwise she'd look like a male :D

Her two companions:

Mini, a gnomish illusionist/thief

2_zpsc875ld7t.jpg

Pelina, and elven sorceress

3_zpsqwtnytls.jpg

She's currently right in front of Davaeorn mine's entrance, I'll post on the most notable moments thus far

- meeting an Orog barbarian who hit for >20 damage per hit, I used Wand of Fire to kill him

4_zpsrmdnhzci.jpg

(these creatures don't exist in vanilla, this is BGSpawn creature)

- killing silenced Bassilus

5_zpsrpcyg2uf.jpg

- basilisk have a decent AC score so I spent most of my Wand charges on them (and Mutamin as well, who went berserk)

6_zpsbou94tv1.jpg

- probably the most accurate fireball I ever casted :D

7_zpsngbdcmyc.jpg

Meeting a very ugly Mist Horror deeper in Durlag's. The problem with it is it requires +2 to hit, only Mini has +2 weapon (arrows). The good thing is that is suffers from a bad AI and will attack whoever it targets first w/o ever switching targets.

8_zpskukg0qx1.jpg

I also noticed a bug here - the ghast there is in fact my own summoned skeleton. Changed his animation to skeleton locally. In addition, he doesn't have a "green-circle" around him. Since I use newest aTweaks version (dating few days ago) I don't know if this is a bug or a feature....

Short story - summoned skeletons can't be controlled.

- meeting (and killing ) a kobold Shaman. This is again a BGSpawn creature, which carriesa good ammout of high-level scrolls. These are gamebreaking ofc; I won't use them - albeit the prospect of gating a Nabassu vs Sarevok is very appealing... :D

9_zps0vvvfrj5.jpg

Droth & Shoal - now skeletons look as they should.

10_zpsabj1cbtu.jpg

Bertha was so far closest to death when fighting Sil's Siren bunch. She got charmed, and summoned skeletons turned on her. Worse yet, she had a sling equipped, which made skeletons more accurate and more damaging then they usually are. Charm expired not a second too soon.

11_zpsfmm8km72.jpg

Second close call - Mini almost getting stabbed while wielding a bow. That would hurt, and it would be a possible chunk on a critical.

Telka missed, and didn't get another chance.

12_zpsgvgckpzr.jpg

Bandit camp - I split the group with Web/Stinking Cloud combo. Whoever was left in got blasted by Skull  Traps.

13_zpskbfsbaq7.jpg

With that expired, Wand of Ice (I rarely remember to get this from Nashkel mines, but it's awesome!) was used on remaining enemies.

We had not trouble travelling through Cloakwood, and as for mines - it was all Mini. Buffed with Bless, Aid and equipped with Venom dagger she starts with a hefty blow on Rezdan. 42 damage! (I guess he has dart equipped....)

Mini quaffs an invis potion asap as Rezdan dies to poison ticks. Next, Kysus

and a Paralysis Wand at Genthore ensures an easy victory.

In my install monks can use the wand of heavens, but not fear wands - that seems reasonable to me and they have made use of the former wand.
