Condolences Wise. What's your next protagonist plan?

Started a Berserker dwarf with **** in axes.

First time through Algernon saved against charm and I got trapped by karlat and died.

Second run, Algernon AGAIN saved and I had to run away, Karlat duplicated himself twice before I was able to sleep.

I returned to Algernon and this time charmed him whereupon two Karlats attacked and killed him.

I quickly acquired the cloak and ran outside where I charmed a Morningmaster who was killed.

I then charmed a Morninglord guard who fared better.

The two Karlats fought him whilst I went in search of the third Karlat.

I charmed a Morninglord and followed by Karlat3, we returned to where Karlat1 and 2 were.

The Morninglord guard died as did the Morninglord, but with another charmed guard we killed all three.

With the ring and the cloak I now have a charisma of 20 instead of 3. That will do. No more use of the cloak for charming.

Going on holiday for a week, so it is unlikely that I will be posting again before next Friday.

Norgath, Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 4th BG1 report

More than two new moons of traveling the Sword Coast had made Norgath a bit of a local hero in some parts (Nashkel and to a lesser extent Beregost), but it was in the city of Baldur's Gate that the Dwarf truly rose to fame. This intrigued Norgath greatly. He considered himself a simple mercenary, not the savior of the Sword Coast. That some of his feats had served not just his own financial interests but also the interests of farmers or merchants was mostly coincidental. Be that as it may, Norgath became one of the most affluent, powerful and respected individuals in the big city within less than a tenday. His position as an independent contractor allowed him to associate himself with several of the most influential factions in the city (rather than being limited to joining just one of those). These factions included the Grand Duke-led Flaming Fist, the Thieves Guild where he made some true friends in Narlen Darkwalk, Rededge, and Black Lily, and two prominent merchant consortiums: the Seven Suns and his friend Aldeth Sashenstar's Merchants' League, rivals of the Iron Throne with whom Norgath's dealings would not surprisingly be less than pleasant.
Besides his work for said organizations Norgath also accepted a number of commissions from individuals with sufficient coin to afford his services. Examples are Brevlik, for whom the rogue purloined a Telescope from the Hall of Wonders, and Tremain Belde'ar, a Priest of Tymora that rewarded the Dwarf generously for timely bringing him his son's corpse from the Water Queen's House.

Norgath had a scare when two Iron Throne employees turned out to have poisoned a meal he ate, but after some research and with the help of his traps, Norgath successfully found and eliminated the Iron Throne hireling that carried the antidote.

Spoiler
The Dwarf would have paid the Iron Throne a visit to teach them some manners right after that, but decided to confer with Duke Eltan first. Norgath didn't mention the actual poisoning, but Doppelganger infestations at the Seven Suns and the Merchants' League convinced Duke Eltan to request Norgath to investigate the Throne. Norgath accepted the commission after negotiating a princely fee.

The Dwarf found the top floor heavily guarded, but no sign of any merchants in charge of the Throne. Warned by his poisoning, the rogue decided to deal with the six or seven guards before they'd be able to deal with him. Hidden in shadows like a true master thief, he set several snares around the group. Norgath knew well enough that his traps wouldn't outright kill the enemy and he also knew he wouldn't be able to fight all of them at the same time. He therefore applied an oil of speed and availed himself of sneak attacks, appearing and disappearing from the different stairs. Some of the unarmed staff (merchants, a bartender, a cook) would snitch on the guards, making it difficult for Norgath to hide in shadows. The Dwarf had no mercy with these staff members. "You've made your damn choice!" he said as he struck them down. (Reputation conveniently dropped to levels that would give Norgath the Divine Wrath Bhaalpower).

Spoiler
None of the guards had an answer to Norgath's backstabs and arrows of biting and soon the two upper floors were littered with corpses.
Spoiler
The Dwarf learned from a dastard figure by the name of Thaldorn, who had hidden himself during the brawl, that the Iron Throne leaders were on business in Candlekeep. The Dwarf let the man go that he might inform any Iron Throne colleagues of what had just transpired. He reported back to Eltan and received from the Duke a book of value to get him into Candlekeep.

Norgath made it back to the gates of Candlekeep without incident, but was waylaid there by five Ogre Mages. Thankfully his Boots of Speed allowed the Dwarf to reach the Keeper of the Portal and to enter the citadel without having to deal with the wizards. The rogue was shrewd enough to see through the thin disguise, the hardly cryptic pseudonym 'Koveras', that Sarevok used, a man that had turned up in some of the Iron Throne correspondence. But he did make the mistake of following Sarevok's tip to take on the Iron Throne leaders that were in a meeting upstairs. Norgath slew Rieltar, the Throne's president, in cold blood,

Spoiler
and had no mercy for the other board members either.
Spoiler
The Dwarf's mistake however, was his supposition that he could get away with all this, as he had done with previous eliminations. The difference was that this time he wasn't in deep down in a mine, in the bowels of the earth, or in a bandit camp in the middle of nowhere, but in Candlekeep, where law and order ruled and were enforced by Watchers. Norgath was arrested for his "crimes".

Thorgeir Hamundarson, human Skald, 2nd entry:

With Imoen's resolve to replace her thieving career with sorcery, our party of adventurers felt like they needed a bit more experience before heading to Naskhel mines. Therefore, they decided to seek out and challenge some basilisks of Mutamin’s Garden. It bugs me why only Branwen seemed to have resented that idea....Ah, yes, they do tend to turn people into pillars :?.

Although Thorgeir belived that his pet-dragon carried an innate immunity to their infamous petrifying gaze (maybe some knowledgeable forum members could either confirm or refute), he did remind himself to memorize appropriate protection spell to avoid any inconvenience.

Early in the morning, Kivan volunteered to scout ahead the area, whereupon he ran into a lonely ghoul. Remaining unseen in shadows, he raised an arrow to his eye but hesitated in the final second as there seemed to be something amiss with the poor creature. The undead caught Kivan’s scent but instead of attacking, it actually introduced itself as Korax and engaged in a meaningful conversation. The others have arrived to the scene shortly. Confused as they were, they just found a new ally.

After that, Korax, Thorgeir's pet and Kivan (magically protected) made a quick work of any basilisks they have encountered. Furthermore, Korax' paralyzing bite proved to be the downfall of Mutamin the Gardener, whom had been turned into a practice dummy before he could unleash any substantial spell. Unfortunately, Korax’ fading traits of humanity eventually got superseded by his feeding instincts and thus he needed to be disposed of before doing any harm to the group.

Finally, the party has crossed blades with Kirian and her boastful companions. Although stripped of their casting abilities by Silence, the four mercenaries did not become an easy prey to our muscle & magic immediately. Doom and Spook allowed us to slightly impair their ranks and focus the pressure on individual targets. The battle was getting really tiring and worst of all, with her dying breath, Kirian managed to pull off a Sleep spell that has knocked out our meele front line. Nevertheless, Kivan’s steady aim proved to be crucial at this point and before long all the enemies were lying in their blood pools like thistles.

Let us travel to the mines then.

Phantasmic Six {3} - monks party (update 1)

I thought I'd give the monks the opportunity to prove third time is the charm. Things didn't look very charming early on when I accidentally picked up LMD as a Bhaal ability, but they pressed on despite the need to regular visit inns to heal up.  There was another early mistake when I let Vitiare get close enough to talk, but fortunately he died before he could get out of the door anyway.
Spoiler

On the way to the basilisk area they triggered a bandit ambush, while still at level 1.  Spirit died, while the others were grateful to survive.
Spoiler
As last time the basilisks were soloed by Spectre, while the others helped shoot down Mutamin from distance.

They then ran through the reputation quests.  Points of interest there included:
- I somehow managed to mis-click when trying to accept the pantaloons (I could always go back later to obtain those with force though).
- I managed to save the realms from a demon dog!
Spoiler
- my mouse batteries ran out, leading to using an alternative that continually (as opposed to occasionally) saw commands not responded too.  Several such issues led to Vax first getting close enough to talk and then killing Spectre (at which point I decided it was late enough in the morning to go and find some replacement batteries without disturbing the family).
Spoiler
- they successfully cleared the ankheg nest without taking any damage and reporting back to the farmer got everyone to level 5 before they went shopping.  After buying what they wanted from Ulgoth's Beard they attacked Dushai (once more killing him so quickly that no-one noticed).
Spoiler

With the wand of heavens to hand they once more ventured to Durlag's Tower.  This time I took more care and picked up plenty of XP from battle horrors, greater dopplegangers and, of course, the dreaded basilisks on the roof.

At the Nashkel Mine Mulahey resisted an initial stunning attack and managed to both summon skeletons and then hold 2 of the party.  He was eventually stunned, but the others still had to work hard to kill the skeletons before they could finish off the held characters.
Spoiler

Chimera - L5, 36 HPs, 71 kills
Spectre - L5, 30 HPs, 98 kills, 1 death
Phantom  - L5, 28 HPs, 46 kills, 0 deaths
Wraith - L5, 36 HPs, 84 kills, 0 deaths
Spook - L5, 36 HPs, 66 kills, 0 deaths
Spirit - L5, 42 HPs, 56 kills, 1 death

Just a brief note about Corthief V and his band of human berserkers (for now) - They are now level 5 and are still kicking. The front-liners use piercing weapons, so we needed to pick up a few magical long swords, even though they have no skill with them, so that the party can (and did) take out Narcillicus jellies quick. The amazons had no chance when the entire party enraged.

For once, Sendai's assessment of my party was dead-on - yes, we really were a group of berserkers - but this only made her lose the fight that much quicker.

Sendai%20calls%20the%20group%20berserker

Will keep at it.

Norgath, solo Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 5th BG1 report

In his cell Norgath had the time to contemplate his actions. It had become clear to him that Sarevok had set him up. He had wanted the rogue to murder the Iron Throne leaders, and Norgath had fallen for it. More than the Iron Throne, Sarevok was his nemesis.
Ulraunt visited him and told him he would be transported the next day to Baldur's Gate where he would be sentenced to death. Norgath saw no means of escaping his cell, let alone the heavily warded citadel, and so accepted he'd have to wait until the trip to Baldur's Gate. But then Tethtoril appeared. The sage priest had little love for the ruthless Dwarf, but he must have measured both Sarevok and Norgath, and considered Gorion's ward the lesser evil. He released Norgath from his cell and teleported him to the library's secret catacombs. The Dwarf, ever eager for profit, casually looted several vaults containing enchanted items, magical tomes, scrolls and potions. Reading the tomes made him stronger and wiser. Wise enough to realize that he might well have become the Sword Coast's most wanted man. The Iron Throne would be after him for the murder of Rieltar & Co, Sarevok wouldn't rest till he was dead, and the Fist would want his hide as well: he had become an outlaw.

Norgath found a way through the catacombs into a cavernous area. On his way he encountered Doppelgangers who were trying to take the shapes of Candlekeep's residents, probably in preparation of a replacement operation. It disgusted Norgath, but he had more urgent matters to worry about, he realized as he read a letter from Gorion that Tethtoril had given him. Apart from being the Sword Coast's most wanted man, he was also a son of Bhaal, he learned from the letter, and so was Sarevok. Norgath didn't really know what to make of it (though it did explain a number of dreams he had had and innate powers he had developed). According to Gorion's letter there were more Bhaalspawn besides Sarevok and him. Sarevok was particularly dangerous though, as he knew of his own heritage and Norgath's. The Dwarf understood that Sarevok had been the one who had slain Gorion, and that he'd have to defeat Sarevok, preferably by legal means in order to clear his reputation, or be defeated. He wondered about the other Bhaalspawn though. If there were more 'Sarevoks' out there that wanted him dead, he'd be in for an interesting ride.
Norgath entered the caverns hidden in shadows and was positive he heard people breathing not far from him. He didn't see them though, nor did they notice him. The Dwarf was fine with that and stalked past Spiders and Basilisks until he found a tunnel that led to the surface, just beyond one of the keep's massive walls.

The rogue decided not to return to Baldur's Gate forthwith. He wanted the storm caused by his actions to subside, and he needed some time to think. His first stop he made at the FAI. As neither his gear nor his gold had been confiscated, Norgath decided to make several donations at the Temple of Garl Glittergold, the closest thing he knew to a Dwarven temple on the Sword Coast, so as to somewhat restore his reputation. It didn't stop a group of bounty hunters he had previously eluded, from tracking him down there.

Spoiler
Norgath decided this time not to run:
Spoiler
After that incident Norgath roamed from town to town, but he found little rest. He decided to return to Baldur's Gate to deal with Sarevok, the most immediate threat.

He still had his friends at the Thieves Guild who provided shelter and a base to operate from. Black Lily sold him a number of items that would prove useful in his quest for vindication. They included an enchanted cowl that protected against poison and backstabs, five phials of poison and a set of arrows of dispelling. From a Kara-Turan spy he learned that Duke Eltan had been poisoned as part of Sarevok's plans to eliminate the city's dukes. Two assassins had been hired to dispatch the other dukes. As a first step toward clearing his name, the Dwarf spirited diseased Duke Eltan away from right under the nose of his suspicious healer, into the care of the Harbormaster. Next he tracked down the assassins, Slythe and Krystin, in the Undercellars. The male was a backstabbing rogue, the female a wizard. Norgath planted four traps close to the pair, and revealed himself when he fired an arrow of biting at Slythe. Norgath's arrow missed, Slythe went invisible, and Krystin - also invisible but easily discerned due to her Fireshields - approached as the Dwarf retreated. Detecting Illusions wasn't Norgath's forte, so there was little he could against his enemies. He threw a Fireball at Krystin, injuring both her and a courtesan (that Norgath thanks to wrongly configured AI proceeded to kill for another steep reputation drop).

Spoiler
(I use aTweaks' Simple Thief script. It allows the player to have a character constantly look for traps or hide in shadows, but I must have pushed the 'v' button at some point, to make the scripted character attack sighted enemies.)

When Krystin became visible, Norgath dispelled her protections with arrows of dispelling and finished the woman with acid arrows.

Spoiler
Slythe reappeared not much later. He proved a lot harder to deal with. Norgath knew he was safe from the assassin's backstabs thanks to his cowl, but even in face to face combat Slythe dished out serious damage. After a critical strike for 30 damage failed to fell Slythe,
Spoiler
severely injured Norgath applied an oil of speed (which, combined with his Boots of Speed, enabled Norgath to outrun the also hasted assassin), and slew his opponent with ranged attacks.
Spoiler
Norgath took Slythe's blade, that he would later see identified as a Short Sword of Backstabbing, as well as an invitation to Sarevok's coronation the next day and a letter from Sarevok containing an instruction to kill the Dukes.

Phantasmic Six {3} - monks party (update 2)

Going over to the coast Wraith took one for the team against Shoal.  This time the party were not in the mood to forgive Shoal for her trespasses.
Spoiler
They went on to clear the ogre clan and sirines before going south to the lighthouse area - an ambush on the way getting everyone to level 6.
Spoiler
At the lighthouse 2 of the first group of sirines were stunned by stealth attacks, making for an easy victory.  Two of Sil's group were also stunned, but the final one put up a struggle by confusing two monks and charming another.
Spoiler
After resting to heal some self-inflicted damage the monks shot down the golems.

One round of stealth attacks saw Tranzig attempt to flee - but there was nowhere to run!
Spoiler
Silke was another stunning victim
Spoiler
before they got a lift with Teven to the Bandit Camp.  Tazok once again took a potion of speed, but was kept in the centre of a circle until he turned to run.  Twice monks successfully intercepted and blocked him trying to run away, but they weren't having much luck with their attacks and the third time he managed to bypass a blocker and escape.

At the Bandit Camp 3 potions of explosions killed Raemon and badly damaged Venkt and he died shortly afterwards.
Spoiler
However, there were still plenty of enemies and there was a hard fight before the last of them were dead and the party could rest to avoid any deaths from poison.
Spoiler
Unfortunately, the instant they awoke more enemies turned up and Wraith found herself on the wrong side of the party to avoid arrows.
Spoiler
A bit more micro-management was required until all the remaining enemies except Taugosz were dead or sleeping.
Spoiler
With only Taugosz alive I tried to speed things up a bit by stunning him, but without success and Spook also died when Taugosz apparently switched targets at the last instant.
Spoiler
After switching to missiles to finish him off the others looted the bodies before going to find a temple.

After investigating the main tent they have just arrived in the Cloakwood.

Chimera - L6, 41 HPs, 90 kills
Spectre - L6, 40 HPs, 112 kills, 1 death

Bg-scs30 update 1.2,

Rescue for I owe you profit;

Hear text as mp3,

Ok fighting that Wolf guy left us half dead… literally half the party dead… but we made it back to Nashkel and had enough cash to resurrect two of our three fallen, sorry Montaron "You are the weakest link".

We still had to kill some witch and that's deep inside Gnoll territory so we asked about hiring a local Ranger to scout the back way and get us there without getting scalped. The general consensus was a guy named Minsc interestingly he also wanted to go to the same fortress and rescue his girlfriend… perhaps from the same evil witch Edwin wants dead?

Good news;
With the Ranger along we managed to avoid most problems and arrived at the fortress quickly. Once there we used entangle to range kill the guard giving the loot to Khalid because that (and the magic armour we found earlier) makes him immune unless they score a critical.
Not so Good news;
As it turns out, the damsel in distress and the witch waiting to be killed are one in the same, I have no doubt someone's lying to me and made my pick, besides I know for certain Edwin doesn't have the gold he promised me for killing her.

Spoiler

Well moneys really tight now having done two jobs for not pay and we returned to Nashkel Carnival because we need ammo and found one merchant selling a "necklace of missiles" cheap…

Spoiler
this posses a moral dilemma until I realise nobody knows where I got them.

Phantasmic Six {3} - monks party (update 3)

In the Cloakwood, 2 characters were poisoned by a phase spider welcoming committee and the party had to run away to avoid a poison death after failing to kill all the spiders in time to allow a rest.  Then in an ettercap ambush I got a bit careless with both the combat and not running in time - there would have been plenty of time to withdraw for a normal character, but the fast-ticking poison significantly slows down movement.  As a result, although Spook reached the edge of the map with 2 HPs left, he died in the area transition - that meant all his equipment was left behind.
Spoiler
I attempted to go back immediately, but sods law meant it took 4 or 5 transitions before another ambush occurred and by that stage the equipment had evaporated.

At the Cloakwood Mine both mages were stunned in a stealthy attack.
Spoiler
The fighters were still a significant challenge, but a few wand blasts eventually helped deal with them as well.
Spoiler
Making their way through the mine took a long time - resting with only 1 CLW meant healing struggled to keep pace with fresh damage from ambushers and they were typically forced to retreat out of the mine and into the neighbouring area (where ambushes only generated a single giant spider) to rest up.  However, Hareishan eventually exposed herself by following upstairs
Spoiler
and progress through her guards was rapid after that (I didn't want to just sneak past them due to the danger of being caught when trying to go back upstairs to rest).

After a couple of months of game time the party were finally ready and opened proceedings against Davaeorn with a first use of the Necklace of Missiles before retreating upstairs.  They bounced up and down a number of times, with fireballs quickly thinning the crowd of guards.
Spoiler
With them out of the way they scouted for Davaeorn - they found no sign of him, although oddly the river plug was on the floor.
Spoiler
I didn't think he was dead as the battle horrors were still there and exploring upstairs again they quickly found a teleport field appearing - indicating that Davaeorn had followed them upstairs invisibly at some point.  Going back down again they quickly made Davaeorn panic, but he failed to run away when Spectre tagged him with a critical.
Spoiler

This time I remembered before resting to go and kill the nobleman at the FAI for his pantaloons and then did a bit of burglary in Beregost to reduce reputation to 9 (in order to get horror as a special ability) before moving on to Baldur's Gate.

Chimera - L6, 41 HPs, 117 kills
Spectre - L6, 40 HPs, 161 kills, 1 death

Norgath, solo Dwarven Bounty Hunter, 6th & final BG1 report

The next day, Norgath visited the Ducal Palace to present to the dukes and nobles of the city Sarevok's letter with the instruction to Slythe to assassinate the Dukes. He saw Duke Belt and Duchess Janneth, Sarevok, and several nobles. When he asked one of the nobles in the audience whether the ceremony had already ended, the figure looked at him with a lifeless stare and remained silent. Norgath understood that these nobles weren't what they seemed to be; they were Doppelgangers. The Dwarf had sufficient experience with these creautures to recognize them for what they were. Knowing he had to protect not just himself but also the Dukes, he quickly boosted his strength and dexterity to supernatural levels with different types of potions and his magic resistance with potions of magic protection. He also placed four snares amidst the unwary Doppelgangers.
When Norgath stepped forward to show Duke Belt Sarevok's letter, the (Greater) Doppelgangers suddenly showed their true clolors, and tried to stop the Dwarf. One of the creatures was faster than all the others in changing shape. It immediately fell to Norgath's traps. Norgath then started to dispel the other Doppelgangers' haste with his arrows of dispelling.

Spoiler
Some of the Doppelgangers directed their aggression toward the Dukes, while others focused on Norgath and actually injured him (which prompted the Dwarf to quaff a potion of defense). The rogue used one of his phials of poison on his acid arrows to weaken the enemies, and with Belt and a number of Flaming Fist Enforcers, he quickly finished the remaining monsters.
Spoiler
The Dwarf then finally had the chance to show Duke Belt and Duchess Janneth the evidence of Sarevok's murderous plans, and to clear his blemished reputation. But, as desperate needs lead to desperate deeds, Sarevok decided to intervene. He attacked all that came close to him, until a wizard teleported into the room, and out again, taking Sarevok with him. Duke Belt teleported Norgath to the Thieves Guild where Sarevok and the wizard had entered a secret tunnel to flee into the so-called Undercity.

Norgath followed through a trapped and guarded maze, disarming the snares and sneaking past the guards (Doom Guards and Skeleton Warriors, and beyond the maze, a group of mercenaries) until he came upon a temple of Bhaal. There he faced Sarevok and four of his most faithful servants: the wizards Angelo and Semaj, and the warriors Diarmid and Tazok. Norgath dispelled Sarevok's haste but saw his own buffs dispelled by Angelo. The Dwarf made the latter pay for that by dispelling the battlemage's buffs and felling him with poisoned acid arrows.

Spoiler
A Skeleton Warrior that rose from Angelo's corpse was elimiated with backstabs. Norgath restored some of his buffs and protections (magic protection because of Semaj, speed, defense, mind focusing), and he also used his gear that protected him from missile attacks. Diarmid the archer injured and poisoned him nonetheless.
Spoiler
Semaj on the other hand formed no danger, as the wizard never cast a Remove Magic at Norgath while the Dwarf was generous with his arrows of dispelling. The rogue could have killed the mage there and then, but he decided to deal with Diarmid first:
Spoiler
Tazok, who had been invisible up till then, injured Norgath with a sneak attack, but the Dwarf showed the Half-Ogre once and for all how an attack from the shadows is properly exectuted:
Spoiler
Semaj, toothless while Norgath was protected from magic, cleverly decided to go invisible and wait for Norgath's protections to expire but the Dwarf had an answer to that stratagem as well, his Necklace of Missiles.
Spoiler
After Norgath removed some Skeleton Warriors from the battlefield, only Sarevok and he remained.

There was doubt in Sarevok's voice and in his words. 'Does it end here then?' - he wondered aloud. Norgath had nothing to say to his enemy though. He realized he didn't hate the warrior. Sarevok meant nothing to him, nothing but an insignificant piece of business he had to get out of the way before he could move on with his life. There was no room for emotion in the stone-cold Dwarf. There were no heroics, no duel. For Norgath was no knight; he was a hardened killer and a hunter. Swift, deadly strikes from the shadows were Sarevok's bane.

Phantasmic Six {3} - monks party (4th and final update)

The monks only did a few encounters in Baldur's Gate at this stage.  They included:
- phase spiders teleporting in during the battle with the ogre mage poisoned 2 characters.  Only Chimera's CLW kept Spirit going long enough for her poison to stop naturally.
- this time I didn't give Nephre Arkion's necklace in order to get the 3,500 XP from Ordulinian.
- killing Lothander as part of the poison quest got everyone to level 7.  Marek surprisingly didn't even manage to buff after his conversation.
- getting the skyship components (and a Necklace of Missiles) and defeating the Halruan mage.
- helping Nadine find Euric (and getting a Necklace of Missiles).

They then went to the Iron Throne.  As usual they lit up the place with the exuberance of their greeting, but that didn't prevent a potioned-up Gardush chasing them between various floors.  After he was finally accounted for they ticked off the remaining opponents, which I thought was going to be done without losses thanks to the use of a potion of regeneration to allow Spook to take the second Shennara's backstabs.  However, at some point I obviously missed Phantom being hit with a MAA sequencer and he died before I was properly aware of the danger (I think he had already used his lay on hands by then anyway) - that meant all of Chimera's party had now suffered a death.  Shortly after that Alai died to complete the clearance project.  Phantom was raised and the loot collected before the party rested a couple of nights on the roof to heal up.

After clearing the Seven Suns the party returned to Candlekeep.  This time I took the precaution of Chimera arriving invisible, although everyone saved against the opening chromatic orbs anyway.  I thought it was reasonable to have a hard fight here (rather than all arrive invisible or protected against magic for instance) and although 3 characters died I just kept Chimera out of trouble and was happy with the result as the last ogre mage fell.  At least I was happy until I looked properly at the screen as I took a final screenshot - anyone see the problem?

Looking back through the text I found that Wraith had suffered a critical blow from an ogre mage when already low on hits.
Spoiler
Even though that would have been a clear chunking in vanilla the SCS component installed to prevent permanent deaths would definitely have been expected to stop that one.  In fact I had relied on that - Wraith had only just gone back into melee there as she was about to die of acid arrow damage anyway and I hadn't expected melee to add any further danger.  I'll abandon this run here and have to try to be even more careful about melee combat in this installation in future ...

It (kind of) prevents chunking due to massive Fire damage (Comet&DB mostly). That's all it can do. Only "real" option to prevent chunks is to set Gore button off.

Sorry about your monkish party. While this party indeed has some late-game potential with MR/stuns/Quivering Palm, I think it's really too hard (I'd vote 99% impossible; even elementals will prove very deadly) playing this setup you're using with monks. :(

Thanks Alesia! I don't think I'll have much time to play this weekend, but hopefully next week.
Thank you too Grond0. And sorry that your latest Monks run hasn't been fully satisfying. I sympathize though, and wish you a cleaner 4th run.
