He is getting expensive, 1600gp already!! But he is a dear so cheap at the price.

Glad to see i'm not the only one who thinks Xan is a dear. Despite him being clinically depressed, he actually has a great sense of humor. Do you have the mod installed that turns him into a sorceror? He's a lot more useful as a sorceror. Though his low hitpoints (even for a mage) still mean that in the early stages you're busier keeping him out of harm's way than letting him actually do something useful. I usually have someone cast 'invisibilty' on him when traveling  between areas.  It's a bit of a pain to keep a spell slot for that, but otherwise he tends to die within 3 seconds as soon as you get ambushed by a group of archers.

Ninoe update: I did not have any time to play the last few days, but I will definately continue with the challenge until she falls.

She has always been a slacker in her small tasks and spent too much of her time with Winthrop playing a game of darts. She is exceptionally strong and dexterous in throwing the darts just to get the best points and to finish the game in her favour. The winnings are often celebrated with a drink and her charm and carefree nature is well-known to the monks and children of the keep (stats 17/18/11/9/15/16).

She has an inseperable friendship with Imoen and they often talked about adventures and solving mysteries. Imoen also went for the heroism act eventhough Ninoe was a tad more reserved about it. Finally a day came when Gorion urged Ninoe to come with him on a trip, an adventure!, and eventhough Imoen showed interest in their impending travels, Ninoe was unable to convince Gorion, her foster father, to have Imoen join in their journey. Not far into the journey became apparent how dangerous it truely would be as Gorion was murdered in cold blood by a mysterious figure who spent some time chasing Ninoe into the night. Coming to her senses in the morning, Ninoe found that Imoen had snuck after them and now the duo stand together in the dangerous realms of the Sword Coast.

The duo met Xzar and Montaron who asked her to join them in traveling south. Since Ninoe is wise enough to know that there is safety in numbers, she could not confuse the offer. She talked with both and convinced them to retrieve the belongings of Gorion, after which it became apparent that she had yet another task at hand before traveling south. Once again, Xzar and Montaron were convinced to travel to the Friendly Arm Inn before going on a trip to the south.

At the Friendly Arm, a man called Tarnesh tried to ambush the four, but smart darting by Ninoe and arrow shooting by Imoen interrupted the spells that the wizard was trying to cast and soon he fell. The friends that Gorions scroll were Khalid and Jaheira. Both joined in on a quest to the south, apparently sharing the same goals as Xzar and Montaron. After questioning several residents, an assessment was made of the local problems and a slight knot in their stomachs made them clear the nearby Hobgoblin infestation from the Friendly Arm, thereby obtaining Joia's Flamedance ring from the thieves. Their valiant act raised the general opinion of the Friendly Arm inhibitors and after a few words of thanks they are at the point of traveling south...

Yes, I do have the mod installed that makes him a sorceror, Khaled being a fighter/mage. That was a mistake. If I'd kept him as a fighter, I could have had Indira as the fighter/mage. All characters are "half elves/elves". The ambush wasn't in transit, it was in the area just north of Beregost, but because I have a new mod installed, (Dark Horizons) I wasn't expecting them. They weren't actually that tough, but Xan was right next to them on entering the area. Probably should have chosen invisibility as one of his spells though. Not used to my set-up yet!

Fortunately the Xan romance does not appear to be affected by death.

Diary of Warmheart
Went to deal with the bandit camp.
We were successful, but at a cost. Both Khaled and Jahiera were killed, and to avoid being wiped out, had to use the last charge of my necklace of missiles.Image IPB

Fortunately I went to the Beregost temple to raise them and not the FAI, for on arrival there was attacked by a group of good, but  hostile fighters. I had to kill them.Image IPB Fortunately they had some good equipment.Image IPB
Went to clear the Ankhegs and was very successful. Now have a wand of fire to replace the necklace of missiles. Image IPB Unfortunately Xan waded in when he wasn't really needed and got himself killed. AGAIN!!Image IPB If I didn't love him, he would NOT be in the party!!!

Diary of Warmheart
Working my way through Cloakwood, I cleared the spider-infested area including a dragon.Jahiera and Khalid also killed there.
Xan was killed by a Hamaryad. Also killed a couple more times. His kisses are decidedly expensive!
The druids then killed Khalid, Xan and finally Aaaaagh!!!!!

The end.

Clearly we are all doomed. Image IPB

Except that warmheart was most certainly female as is my next character Dragonslayer, a cleric/ranger with stats of 18 in everything except charisma of four. Strength 18/41. Took twentyseven rolls. Will try an all "half elf/elf" party again.

I was caught by entangle, my mages were dead, and even if I'd got free, I would have lost their equipment.

Couldn't believe it. Dragonslayer got killed by Tarnesh!!!Image IPB
I was a little slow casting sanctuary, and tarnesh cast sleep. The end.

New Dragonslayer, male this time. Still Cleric/ranger. Only stat difference is that strength 18/99!!

Am I right in thinking that the only stronger strength I could get is 18/00?

This time alittle more careful and a little less blase.

I see, very unfortunate. To me losing gear isn't as awful as starting all over if you have done a large portion of the game already. I don't get much time to play around since my gf hogs the pc sometimes.

Tarnesh is the biggest early game hurdle for me because I always read Gorions scroll and go to the Friendly Arm Inn. I mean, in a big world without any clues, why would you not go see Jaheira and Khalid? As a result, if you bumped Imoen or did not get Montaron and Xzar to join, you're in for a tough fight, especially in a noreload game.

The difference of 18/99 and 18/100 is +1 thac0 and +1 damage. I am certain that you will go for the +strength book anyway, so it will probably be unnoticable around that time. I think aid and bless solve the thac0 problems, but my recollection may be off on that.

Short but problem-free update.

Ninoe had a bit of a travel between the Friendly Arm Inn and Beregost. She killed the Ogre thereby returning Unsheys belt. Beregost was explored to some extent finishing the miniencounter slime quest in a most horrendous way when the girl transformed into a slime! Not many people liked me for that afterwards and my reputation tumbled to 5. I also solved the miniencounter family jewel quest but did not buy their necklace due to lack of funds. Upon entering the Red Sheaf, Karlat challenged the party and killed Montaron. After resurrecting him at the Temple of Wisdom we ventured south and battled some halforcs to retrieve word from Roe for Marianne. When we returned the letter she gave us a ring of princes which now adorns Ninoes finger. Finally going south we killed some orcs to retrieve a boots of stealth which Montaron desired very much for usage. Going south now to Nashkel...

I usually find Tarnesh easy with a cleric, for as soon as you have talked to him, if you cast sanctuary, the guards kill him for you.
I just played it badly this time.

I need to re-install. The comments on the compatability of my mods and Dark Horizons have turned out to be true. It'll be a while before I can play again.

Having had a break reading a few books I'll see if I've recovered enough patience to play this as a no reload. Entering the challenge with Psyche - human kensai designed to be dualled to druid later in life. Stats 18s {18(05) strength} except charisma 16 and intelligence 9. Specialising in scimitars - really must remember to buy one in Candlekeep this time as they're so difficult to get hold of elsewhere.

Initial adventures of Pysche.

Completed quests in Candlekeep (except for hanging on to antidote and identify scroll. After Gorion's untimely demise hooked up with Imoen, Xzar and Montaron and cleared the initial area. Remembered the scimitars, but forgot to buy a sling, so Xzar bravely volunteered to do the running round to distract the opposition. Headed East, but rather than dealing directly with the fetishist ogre journeyed on to the Friendly Arm Inn. Imoen managed to interrupt Tarnesh with a magic missile and it should have been all over when the second LMD from Xzar sent him scurrying away in fear. However, he someone managed to avoid all attacks until he came to his senses and even got a successful attack in on Imoen before a guard finally applied the coup de grace.

Update for Psyche. After taking on Jaheira and Khalid headed on down to the ogres area. Generally easy, though Khalid was killed by the caravan bandits. The leader had no penalty for using a bow even though Montaron was standing under her nose, which seemed a bit unfair.

After a trip to the Beregost temple went to Feldepost's Inn, where only Jaheira initially entered in order to prevent Montaron from provoking Marl. Following a nice rest Imoen tried a spot of pickpocketing before continuing on south. Her failure proved important when I recruited Viconia as Jaheira and Khalid stormed away in a huff, taking Mirianne's letter and various bits of equipment with them. C'est la vie. Psyche picked up her first level and gained 12HP; after a couple of miserably weak characters let's hope she continues to show a bit of backbone.

Continuing down the road Montaron got killed by a elite hobgoblin and the weakened party pressed on to Nashkel. Decided to recruit Minsc to fill the hole and also swapped Xzar for Edwin - probably going to be some fireworks there later. Also discovered that Minsc is the one thing in the universe that can shut Noober up. Fast tracked over to the gnoll stronghold and took that out. Fortunately made no mistake with the charisma book as Psyche needed that if she ever hopes to be a druid. Not surprisingly Minsc objected to the slaughter of his witch so the party is now one short again. A cave bear ambush on the way back to Nashkel gave Psyche her 3rd level and 14 more HP! Definitely now a character worth taking care over.

Interesting game Grond0. There is something else that will shut Noober up. It is called a war hammer!!!

Diary of Dragonslayer

On leaving Candlekeep, we were ambushed, and at Gorion's command, ran for it. However, I did not try for the Friendly Arms as it was clear that our enemies knew our plans. Instead I attempted to return to Candlekeep. The guard however
would not let me enter. However he did arrange for the burial of Gorion. On returning to the site of the ambush, I picked up some equipment to help with carrying gems, scrolls and suchlike. I continued eastward and on seeing some wolves south of the inn, I cast sanctuary. This enabled me to pick up a hidden ring in safety and to head southwards to Beregost. There I helped marl in his grief, took a book to Firebead, killed several spiders and bought a good sling. I also helped resolve a family quarrel. A rather spineless man was also helped.

South of Beregost, I killed a couple of ogrillon and an overzealous member of the flaming fist. I reached Nashkel where I did some babysitting and rescued a boy from a baby wyvern. Now I can really call myself Dragonslayer.

Headed south and killed Greywolf in hand to hand combat, having first used Command and Hold to disable him.
Picked up some nice jewls to the east and rested at the carnival. In Nashkel I got the reward for Prism's emeralds. Took on Neira, but her hold spell almost caused my death. I was reduced down to 3 HP.
Used Sanctuary and returned to the Carnival for healing.

On my return Neira was killed due to me being well prepared. Silence was the important spell, though Spritual Hammer, Shield of Faith and Draw upon Holy Might, also helped.

Yes.  I remember reading a thread about shutting him up a while ago.  I think charming him and leaving him to deal with summoned phoenix guards was my favourite!
Psyche recruited Kagain for a bit of muscle.  While in Beregost did the slime quest, successfully passing off the dodgy antidote (last time I tried that I just doubled the slime problem).  Popped back to the Friendly Arm to pick up some free antidotes (couldn't complete the quest as Jaheira and Khalid walked off with all the relevant items).  Then back down to clear the area south of Nashkel - not too many alarms although Montaron did have a fatal encounter with the end of Sendai's sword.
I was hoping to have found an area effect spell for Edwin by now (apart from colour spray which I tend to find more dangerous to me than the enemy), but no luck - normally I don't allow buying equipment until a bit later in the game.  Decided to have a go at the mines anyway and bulled through, although had to retreat to get temple aid twice.  Back in Nashkel retreated from the initial encounter with Nimbul when he turned invisible.  Second time around slowed him up slightly with a successful silence before getting him with a blind.  Still took a long time to kill him as he used up at least 6 stoneskins together with several mirror images.  Eventually he made the mistake of webbing the surrounding area and catching himself and paid the penalty.

Further adventures of Psyche. In order to keep the party reputation down and get her second LMD Montaron deliberately bungled pickpocketing the shopkeeper in Nashkel. Unfortunately as a result he won't do business with us any more (even with Montaron bumped from the party). Psyche duly had her dream and then did a bit of travelling around getting reputation up. Just in the waterfall area was attacked by 6 winter wolves - all helps the balance of payments I suppose. Another cave bear ambush gave L4 and 9 HP.

Imoen got to L5 and decided it was time to dual, but thought to do a spot of pocketing first. Headed for the temple to fleece the sirens, but was ambushed by Lamalha and ran for it. After a detour to Ulgoth's Beard to get a ring of free action came back intending to fight only to find the ambush had now been joined by the other roving party! However, it looked like that had triggered a summoning limit as there were only 3 amazons and 2 others on the map and they were dealt with without trouble.

Went to Laurel's area and picked up a new pair of boots. At this stage the computer was running incredibly slowly and missing frames which made battles very difficult. I thought it might be a bug, but after eventually killing insane numbers of gibberlings (sleep proving very useful here) things went almost back to normal, so it must just have been up against a processing limit. A quick trip to take out the Xvart village, which was easy and Borda (also surprisingly easy - this time took the precaution of summoning unsleepable skeletons to support the party). Travelling back to Nashkel there was the obligatory cave bear ambush and, guess what, Psyche got her L5 - only 7 HPs this time; coming back down to earth rapidly. Finally everyone was back in Nashkel for a rest, which seems like a good idea to me too.

Final update for Psyche. Cleared the southern areas and the western areas other than Drizzt and lighthouse. In attacking the sirens at the lighthouse gave the ring of free action to Kagain to go in for a frontal attack in a webbed area. The intention was to just retreat if he got charmed. This shouldn't have been a problem. However, Psyche ran out of throwing axes, auto-attacked and got webbed before I noticed. The others threw themselves in the way, but the sirens all targeted Psyche and she went down quickly. Oh dying is so easy!

Sorry to hear it.

Elnar
As we head into Baldurs Gate Imoen decides to become a transmuter. We try to help her become useful again at the cost of sirenes, basilisks, mercenaries and adventurers etc. This takes a long time, not helped when Yeslick gets careless and entangled in a spiders web. A temple donation of 1000gp has him back on his feet and he pays us back by dispelling the defences of Kahrk the ogre mage.

Zhaimar Cloudewulfe and his gang are distracted by skeletons, allowing us to kill his spellcasters and then eliminate the remaining fighters with little injury on our part.

Despite our efforts Imoen is not interested in detecting traps and we are forced to wait for Coran to hone his skills in this area before doing much else. He's 128% stealth (not my choice other than boots and armour), 80% locks and 60% traps so tempting to dump him and grab Alora instead.

Yeslick, 6/6. 90 kills, Jalantha Mistmyr. Ashideena, war hammer.
Minsc, 6. 147 kills, battle horror. Composite longbow.
Elnar, ranger 7. 296 kills, greater basilisk. Long bow of marksmanship.
Kivan, 7. 265 kills, greater basilisk. Composite longbow +1.
Coran, 6/6. 161 kills, greater basilisk. Composite longbow.
Imoen transmuter 5/(thief 7). 51 kills, Davaeorn. Sling +1.

Following the demise of Psyche I thought I'd have one more go, but using a berserker rather than kensai for future dualling to druid.  That should make it significantly easier as kensais are a bit weak at low levels.  Rolled up a sister for Psyche called Psycho -  18/76 str, 8 int, 16 cha, others 18.  Four points in scimitars.

Modules used:
- Tutu
- Grey Clan
- BG Mini-quests and encounters
- Lure of the sirines
- Stone of Akovar
- BG1 NPC project
- Drizzt saga
- sword coast strategies
- herbs & potions
- rogue rebalancing

Initially recruited Xzar and Montaron, then up to the Friendly Arm to get Jaheira and Khalid.  Cleared the ogres area except for the bandits.  In preparing for them Psycho used her berserking ability for the first time and noticed that she had a full range of BG1 special abilities already!  They weren't the ones I would prefer so I was tempted to restart the game on the assumption that no more would be gained.  However, first proceeded directly down to Nashkel to get the mines quest and rest and, indeed, discovered that another ability was gained in addition to the ones already in place!

Any views on whether this counts as just unanticipated good fortune or so cheesy that the game should be scrapped?

Ninoe update:
I went south from Beregost to Nashkel, but the foes I met along the way caused havoc to my party. Jaheira, Khalid, Montaron and Xzar, all level 1 characters, died a couple of times and each time I had to go back to the Beregost temple to resurrect them (100 gold due to mods I think, not that expensive luckily). Only Imoen and Ninoe were the constant factors in my party. Traveling through the wilds just north of Nashkel showed a vampiric wolf! Having no magical attacks and few magical scrolls and spells memorised, I did attempt an attack, but when he was still only injured and having only 1 charge left on Imoens wand of missiles, I was forced to retreat and cure my party members.
Finally I got to Nashkel by skipping the wilds just north of it and keeping to the road, meeting a nice fellow talking about distant cities. In Nashkel I joined up with Berrun Ghastkill to clear the mines, but a few unsuccessful attempts through hordes of goblins and goblin guards bearing Noma Stikkas (mod introduced) my party had to keep retreating due to lack of survivors. Luckily I was able to give back Kylees dagger, he appreciated that. I got back to the surface and found a scroll of web in a tree when I walked by to Nashkel. After some traveling to and fro my party got tired and we went for a rest in the Nashkel Inn. Inside the inn, we were drawn in an ambush! Some fighting ensued but with a nice spread out through the inn, our party prevailed without casualties (though Ninoe and Xzar did get to sleep for a little while during the fight). The final touch was delivered by Xzar with a nice casting of Burning hands.
After resting up we headed to the mines again, but when we passed the spiders in the lower levels it became painstakingly clear that this party just would not do. We went back to Nashkel and after some arguments Xzar and Montaron were left behind near Oublek (who graciously increased by reputation when I told him that I was not greywolf). Minsc was taken along for the ride after we promised to find his charge Dynaheir. Now we stand again in the lower reaches of the mines before hordes of goblins...

I deliberately did not read through the walkthrough for Dark Horizons. If you install it, I would recommend that you do the same. It's a bit like starting the game with no idea what is coming next as the added assassins are quite powerful, but not overly so. I like it!!
Diary of Dragonslayer

On hearin about the mines at Nashkel, I wanted to do something about it but still felt too weak.
I therefore went about doing good, trying to prepare myself. Deder, trying to be helpful tried to pickpocket Algernon's cloak. Unfortinately he failed and we ended up having to kill the poor bloke. My reputation went way down, so to avoid a repeat of such an occurence, I decided never to have him in my group again.

I helped rescue a cow, a dog and a cat, rescued a boy at the lighthouse, killed bassilus and Zargal, helped the archaeologist and Brage, and the girl priestes against Sonner.

Was ambushed by Tristan and Isolde who died leaving me with some good equipment.

I then started picking up party memners, Khaled and Jahiera, Ajantis, and Coran. Went wyvern hunting for Coran and ended up killing a dragon as well. Now I really am Dragonslayer! To be honest, it was no worse than a wyvern to kill. Well it did burn Ajantis a bit, but not seriously. Coran turned out to be as bad as Deder, picking up some useful trinkets from the druids that we were helping. The difference is that he is better at it!

We have now rescued Dynahir, killing some more assassins on the way.
