The Misadventures of Lord!

Lord returns to the city and gets his detective cap out once again. After speaking to various sources, he feels he has built an accurate picture of the events that have transpired in his abscense. Time to start poking his nose into other peoples' business then!

Lord kills "Doctor Doppelganger" and helps Duke Eltan to safety.
Posted Image

He tracks down Sarevok's hirelings in the undercellar.
Posted Image

Krystin floods the area with cloudkill, killing many innocents. Lord waits it out before finishing her off too.
Posted Image

Next, Lord heads to the Iron Throne building to put an end to Cythandria. Although afflicted with a confusion spell, the wily detective manages to defeat her.
Posted Image

He eventually shakes off the effects and is able to beat Cythandria's ogre bodyguards.
Posted Image

Now holding enough incriminating evidence, Lord heads for Sarevok's coronation as a grand duke.

Lord spoils Sarevok's doppelganger surprise.
Posted Image

(I'll admit I was completely freaking out in this fight. I think Belt came quite close to dying too.)  :?

After using the wand of monster summoning to buy some time, Lord manages to cast a dispel magic from a scroll to remove haste from the monsters. He then desperately kills the final doppelganger that is attacking Belt. Lord manages to tank the remaining creatures as they are killed off.
Posted Image

No longer protected by Mirror Image, Lord takes a mighty blow during a quick scuffle with Sarevok.
Posted Image

Lord backs down and attempts to attack from range, but not before Sarevok's mage manages to teleport the two of them away (allowing me to breathe a massive sigh of relief).
Posted Image

Lord has just reached the maze below the thieves' guild now. I've lost all confidence after seeing how hard Sarevok can hit. :(  That was just under a third of Lord's health in one strike. If I make it that far, I think ranged attacks will be the way to take him down. Not looking forward to the next few areas though.

Congratulations on getting past the palace - I think that's easily the hardest battle in the game for a solo character because of the need to protect the dukes as well as yourself.  You're on the home straight nowPosted Image.

Thanks. I was quite fortunate that the summoned hobbgoblins had the desired effect and tanked a few of the doppelgangers. Although Liia Jannath dropped very early in the fight, I was given enough time to beat them. I doubt I could have soloed it without the summon.

I think I may have cried if that had been game over...

Risque was making further good progress until a significant setback in the last battle.  Dashed through the city avoiding most conflicts, though I did choose to fight the Iron Throne guys this time.  However, aftera fireball frenzy the shocked survivors needed little mopping up.

After a quick trip to Candlekeep to improve Risque's stats it was back to the city and a date at the palace.  The dopplegangers were no match for a buffed party and hardly scratched the dukes.  Rather than head straight after Sarevok Risque chose to travel to the Friendly Arm for a rest, only to find it was in the hands of bandits.  Kagain took it upon himself to free the place.  First off the necromancer and his hordes were taken down.  Kagain used his boots of speed to run round the temple and tackle them in ones and twos.  Inside the inn the final battle seemed to be going well with all the supporting troops dead and the sorceress on her last legs
Posted Image
Unfortunately she hit him with a flesh to stone and, although Viconia did have one in memory, that's a buff I don't use.  Shar-teel took only one thrust to finish off the battle, but it was too late for Kagain.
Posted Image

I presume that the acid arrow that Kagain was attacked by earlier continued to cause damage after stoning and made him die, along with all his own equipment.  Fortunately, his bag of holding and potion bag were teleported to Risque at the point of death so those were saved, but I still think I might have to consider applying protection from petrification a bit morePosted Image.  He was also carrying some of the keys used for the golem, who has an intelligence tome, and I can't think of a way to get at that now.

Final update for Risque
I had been planning to do a bit more mod-work, but after Kagain's untimely demise decided to cut straight to the chase.  Unusually managed to make it through the maze without any damage.  As usual web and fireballs took care of the party and Tamoko only took a second.  Inside the temple Sarevok was engaged by successive batches of summons while the party took down first Tazok and then Semaj, but the others did not appear (and were not invisible).

Some googling showed that this was a known issue with SCS in the past when Tazok had been killed in the bandit camp - possibly a recurrence here, or maybe it was something to do with me adding in a XP cap part-way through the game.  After trying out various CLUAConsole options I eventually settled for CLUAing in the other minions and killing them.  Still couldn't find a way to make Sarevok killable, but did reset the global variables to allow the party to proceed to BG2.

Risque is now in Irenicus's dungeon, though I'm not sure whether I should continue with this game or not given the unsatisfactory conclusion to BG1.

Alright, Lord is up to Sarevok now. I haven't done this fight in years & I'm scared. Here's hoping this bag full of potions & scrolls pays off!

Btw, Tamoko was easy and the party before her... well I bulldozed them.

Final update soon I guess. Eeep.

Phew! Now that I've had a chance to calm down & have a beer, I am happy to announce that Lord has proven victorious!  :D

I'll do a full update with pics etc later.
Basically though, weakened Angelo & Semaj with 2 skull traps & then barraged them with arrows of dispelling & detonation. Tazok & Angelo closed in and Angelo killed himself with his own arrows of detonation. For some reason, Semaj had teleported out of sight so I was left to run rings around Tazok and fill him with arrows.
Used the familiar to scout Semaj's location. Re-used a magic defense potion & went to attack him from range. He hit me with a lightning bolt, which to my disbelief, returned from my end of the room to kill him!
Sarevok was easy on his own but I took no chances. He was basically mobbed with summoned creatures while I dipped in & out of melee with him. Falling back to heal a couple of times.

As I said, proper post on the fight later on!

Excellent stuff Grimbergenme - only BG2 to go nowPosted Image.

While I mull over Risque's future I thought I would take up Aigleborgne's challenge and try and solo a random stat bard through BG1 - solos are so quick that shouldn't take long.  I've used the same minimal mod set-up as for the Need for Speed challenge (essentially BGT, BG1 NPC project and SCS), in order to avoid any temptation to use mod items, although I've added in a BG1 experience cap.

I forgot to take a screenshot at the beginning, but here is Simon just after talking to Marl.
Posted Image
The character stats are the first ones rolled - actually rather better than I would have expected.  The low strength is obviously going to be a pain in restricting items that can be carried (and making normal armour pretty much out of the question).  However, given that shoot and run tactics were always expected to be my gameplay option at the start (as I'm not intending to use Algernon's cloak) the high dexterity is better than strength and the decent intelligence will also help with spell learning.

After accounting for the 2 assassins at Candlekeep went straight to Beregost.  Talking to Marl got Simon to level 2 and a whole extra HP.  Returning a book and shooting some spiders made up a further level and 4 more HPs.  After being beaten away once by skeletons managed to kill a gnoll at High Hedge and dodged past Karlat to return a stolen sword.  An ogrillon also gave up a scroll that earned a nice ring as a reward.  A mixture of ghouls and hobgoblins helped him to his fourth level - now up to 14 HPs, but still very vulnerable to being killed by a single critical.  One hobgoblin yielded a chromatic orb spell, which should be a bit more useful than the only spell known previously (identify).  Also found some boots and returned them to Zhurlong.  Eventually got to Nashkel, where lots of ducking in and out of doors finally got rid of Neira from the inn.  A kobold arrow at extreme range at the carnival almost put an end to the run and I think there have been 3 other attacks that could theoretically have killed him (though none of them even hit).  Simon  rescued Melicamp and then spent some time trying to get a skeleton on its own in order to acquire a head.  In the course of this he got level 5 and one more HP - a poor consolation considering Melicamp did not survive.  However, he took the opportunity to buy a few new spells, including magic missile, sleep and invisibility.

Then it was off to Firewine Bridge.  Considering what ambushed him it was probably a good thing he was travelling invisibly for the first time.  Tried to take Meilum out with a mixture of spells and arrows, but ran out of the latter and had to go to the carnival for a resupply before coming back to claim his new gauntlets.

Now regularly travelling invisibly Simon went to find a ring of fire resistance.  Despite heaving manfully he had to give up on carrying Samuel, but still headed north to pick off an ogre before giving Tarnesh a dose of magic missiles.  While at the inn dropped off a pesky spider body and acquired a couple of new rings - ring of wizardry a particular bargain considering it fetched a tidy 9,000 at the carnival.  Working back south to the Nashkel mines took out Xzar and Montaron in order to get their potion of speed.  This was in case it was needed for Greywolf, but in the event he didn't seem to have any potions and Simon just shot him up as usual in order to acquire his first taste of magic weaponry.  While selling at the carnival dealt with Zordral by popping in and out of the tent with magic missiles ready - though had to use up a scroll as well as his own spells to finish him off.  That got Simon to level 6 and 5 more HPs (hurrah) has taken him to the dizzy heights of 20.

Good luck! That's formidible challenge but I like your chances: pickpocketing, wands, bows, and game knowledge make a powerful combo in BG1.

Alastria v. Drasus & Co. (Or the Return of the Blob)

I've decided to post one more of the battles covered earlier. I think others may find it interesting. The tactical approach used here is an oldie-but-goodie for Alastria, but it may seem novel to some.

Alastria's Spell Book

Level 1: Blindness, Chill Touch, Protection from Evil, Shield, Spook
Level 2: Blur, Mirror Image, Strength, Web
Level 3: Melf's Minute Meteors,  Remove Magic, Vampiric Touch
Level 4: Polymorph Self, Teleport Field

The Plan

The basic logic here is simple. Web is a great spell. The only problem is that it becomes irrelevant when enemies clear it. It would be better if enemies could be kept in. Free Action is one option. But what if you don't have the Ring and need to conserve Potions? Teleport Field could work. Enemies that clear the Web would be swept back into it. Sounds good. And once you have a Teleport Field going, Mustard Jelly form makes a lot of sense. The Jelly is 100% Resistant to Magic, 85% Resistant to Missle Damage, and can  get a low Missle AC with items. Melee Weapons are the only threat, but Teleport Field can essentially negate them. With a Tele-Jelly, you typically  win as long as you can deal enough damage to end the battle before the Field runs out- you'll often take no damage at all.

Execution

The battle went according to plan. Rezdan was whisked off somewhere- Alastria still doesn't know where he went. Aside from that, it was all good.

First the Web.
Posted Image

Then the Telefield.
Posted Image

Here's how it looks setup.
Posted Image

Now, time to bring on the hurt: Meteors. Human form is safe so long as the Greenstone Amulet is active.
Posted Image

The Meteors killed Drasus and Kysus. Alastria had more left. But with Rezdan out there somewhere -and the Greenstone Amulet running out- it made sense to go Jelly.

Of course, it would be wise to refresh the Telefield before committing to the Jelly.
Posted Image

In Jelly, Alastria used the Wand of Frost. That's how she finished.

Merrus did a bit more yesterday, a bit more today.

We cleared the Nashkel mines with relative ease. Minsc took a bit of damage from rest-interrupting kobolds, and we had to burn a potion and travel back up to L1 to rest. A well-placed Fireball took care of Mulahey and his Entangled minions, however. We did pick up Xan, and he would have been useful given that Dynaheir is an Invoker, but we dropped him off in Nashkel.

The trio headed north in search of the Bandit Camp. We didn't find it, but we did find Viconia, who I switched to a Cleric/Thief after all. I think a focus in stealth and pick pockets would really suit her, but most cleric weapons are unsuitable for backstab and I need find traps and open locks, so that's what she has now. Maybe when she gets to a higher level she can branch out a bit, and the boots of stealth make anyone somewhat competent.

I decided to go bassilisk-hunting with our new friend, leaving Minsc and Dynaheir in Beregost. Unfortunately, the Gullykin assassins chose this moment to show up. When they interrupted Viconia's Animate Dead, I decided to rejoin the rest of my team before taking them on. Things only got worse, though. When we returned to the area, the amazonian assassins also showed up, giving us four of them to fight. Well, poor Minsc got held and killed pretty quickly (the first death of the run), so Dynaheir unleashed a Stinking Cloud and a trio of Fireballs at the now-Entangled group. This took care of most of them, but Lamalha and Morvin were too close to Merrus, who was now also Held. Still, things would have been OK if Dynaheir hadn't run into some Tasloi AND some Flinds when moving around the Cloud. In the end, we had to flee, get Minsc raised, rest, and return, at which point we easily finished off the injured pair and collected their loot.

Once we'd recovered, we did indeed kill some bassilisks, which got Merrus another level. We also took on Tranzig (disappointingly, he chose to attack Minsc with his staff when invisible, which rather spoiled my attempted Tranzig-toughening mod).

The current party:
Merrus Druid L6
Minsc Fighter L6
Dynaheir Invoker L6
Viconia Cleric/Thief L5/5

The Misadventures of Lord: Final Post!

Here's the final battle.
(going to try linking directly to images for a few of the pics - hope it works!)

Stats & buffs before the fight.
While stealthed, Lord's familiar provokes Sarevok into sending his followers after Lord. Semaj and Angelo trigger the 2 skull traps that Lord prepared earlier as Lord starts to barrage them with arrows of detonation.

Posted Image

Lord's painstakingly placed protections are dispelled, so he gulps down a potion of magic blocking and continues to fight. Angelo & Tazok close in and Lord uses his wand to summon a few monsters. The summoned ogres don't last long. Angelo fires explosives at them, injuring his allies in the process. Lord's magic blocking and fire resistance ring protect him from harm.

Posted Image

Much to Lord's amusement, Angelo kills himself with his own explosion, and Semaj chooses to teleport away to the far end of the room - effectively removing himself from the fight. Lord then pops on his boots of speed to evade Tazok and takes him down from range.

Lord takes a moment to heal his injuries and to locate Semaj, using his familiar. When ready, he drinks a potion of magic shielding and attacks the mage. Semaj manages to hit Lord with a lightning bolt spell. Lord watches the bolt and prepares to dodge it if it were to return. It bounces in the corner of the room & flies back at him on the very same path it had taken. He gets out of the way and watches in disbelief as the lightning bolt strikes its caster down.

Lord heals himself once again and then rebuffs with remaining potions and scrolls. He uses his wand of monster summoning to swamp Sarevok with gnolls, and proceeds to attack him from a distance. Deciding that his arrows are having little effect on his opponent, Lord equips his sword & shield before getting into the melee.

Posted Image

This approach proves much more effective and our hero manages to score a few solid strikes. When Lord is hit by one of Sarevok's attacks, he drops out of the fray to summon more monsters and heal his wound. Fighting-fit again, Lord charges back in and is able to deliver a fatal blow to his half-brother.

Congrats, Grimbergenme!

Unfortunately, Merrus was not so lucky. The team entered the bandit camp with ease, Entangling Taugosz and taking him down with ranged weapons. Once inside the tent, however, things turned sour. Skeletons kept the hobgoblin busy whilst the gnoll guy was Entangled. Merrus hit the mage with a Miscast Magic, pretty much taking him (or at least 4/5 of him) out of the fight. Later, Viconia Held the hobgoblin.

However, this fight was all about the other guy, Raemon. Dynaheir's Stinking Cloud was slightly misjudged, and knocked Minsc out. Before we could heal him, Raemon finished him off. He also saved against numerous Command and Hold Person spells, leaving him free to run amok. A little complacency on my part let him get off one hit too many, and Merrus bit the dust.

finis

I actually think Dynaheir's behaviour here was a tad buggy, because she was flickering a lot and never recovered from the Stinking Cloud, though she sould just have been failing her saves repeatedly. Either way, I think I will carry on with run this as a minimal-reload because it's been interesting (but I don't want to play levels 1-4 as a solo Druid again anytime soon), but for now, I'm out.

Unless you're playing with the souped-up Doppelgangers from SCS you can use a Wand of Sleep on them -- it usually takes out at least one or two of them for the whole fight. If you have the Horror Bhaalspawn ability or spell it can also sometimes get a couple of them out of the fight temporarily.

I usually go with a buff - start the fight - Wand - whack, whack, whack - Wand - whack, whack, whack - wand ... etc. sequence.

The key, of course, is managing the damage to Belt. Unfortunately Otiluke's Sphere doesn't work in my BGT/SCS install (turns everyone hostile) -- otherwise that would be ideal.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game

After considering a number of strategies, Alastria ultimately decided to avoid confrontation at the Iron Throne- the area is too confining for her to operate safely.

She is at Candlekeep now. And, unfortunately ill prepared. It's been years since I've played BG1. I did not recall tha she would be whisked off to Candlekeep upon returning to Belt.

We'll see how it goes. I'm worried about her at this point.

Best,

A.

Still travelling invisibly Simon went to Durlag's Tower to pick up 3 thieving potions and then up to Ulgoth's Beard where the green amulet was purchased and ring of free action not purchased.  Also bought the cloak of Displacement, which meant a few hard won healing potions had to be sold to free up weight.  Then off to the gnoll stronghold, sneering at all the winter wolves as I sneaked past, to collect the charisma tome.  Also slept the ogrillons on the bridge and the proceeds from the gauntlets of dexterity paid for a necklace of missiles.  Dared to steal a wand of monster summoning from under the noses of some ghasts, but got invisibility back up before they attacked.  Finally moved on to the Nashkel mines - sneaking through with the exception of sleeping / shooting the last group of kobolds.  The various traps used up all healing potions, but Simon bravely (rashly) pushed on to confront Mulahey.  Killed the kobolds outside the cave entrance to avoid any ambushes if forced to retreat and then tried to rest again before the battle.  First attempt failed so killed the kobolds and then also killed the gray oozes (with snap shots from extreme range) in order to open up a line of retreat if resting failed again - this time it didn't.  The battle with Mulahey was easy enough.  A bunch of gnoll summons did the hard work - Mulahey got just the one spell off (a hold person that bounced off Simon's ring).

Back at Nashkel some gnolls helped use up a lot of Nimbul's spells.  He went invisible so Simon had to show himself briefly and then bounce in and out of the shop a number of times before being able to wait, while some hobgoblins finally finished him off.  A strength spell (found on a wandering gnoll) helped Simon talk to Joseph's wife, before remembered he had dropped the appropriate ring in the mines to free up inventory spacePosted Image.  Used the red potion to learn Nimbul's find familiar scroll along with a few other spells from High Hedge before confronting Tranzig.  An initial attack with summoned monsters failed to kill him, but after a rest a succession of magic missiles did the job.  Unfortunately he didn't give the location of the bandit camp, so had to cadge a lift from Teven and confront Tazok, which I would have preferred to avoid.  On arrival went invisible immediately and waited out Tazok's potion of speed before hitting him with magic missiles.  Strangely he then ran away and I couldn't find him again so attacked the main bandit tent.  An initial dose of summons did nothing, but a couple of invisibilities allowed a cone of cold and a fireball to dispose of Hakt and Britik.  A bit more rapid movement in and out of the tent saw a couple of magic missiles send Venkt running scared and he was shot down, while Raemon ran away and disappeared.  After resting Raemon was still gone so used a potion to protect against the lightning trap and looted what little could be carried - this belatedly turned all the bandits outside hostile, but they still couldn't see Simon escaping.

With the intention of picking up another level at least before the cloakwood Simon returned a bowl to a priest and then went after the mad Bassilus.  Before tackling him a couple of fireballs helped relieve Zargal of his sword (Simon has short sword proficiency because of weight issues).  The intention was to magic missile Bassilus to death with the protection of ring of free action and green amulet, but for some reason his undead army didn't die.  Some summons slowed them down and a fireball did most of the rest of the work.  With just one skeleton left (summoned by Bassilus), Simon got a bit careless and tripped over his feet - only his familiar's HP (and the fact that he'd just used up a healing potion on earlier damage) saved him.
Posted Image
With vague memories that his rabbit was physically resistant Simon sent him in to tackle the skeleton, but it quickly became apparent it was no contest and the duo left for Beregost (checked later - rabbits have elemental rather than physical resistance).  After turning in Bassilus's symbol Simon now needs less than 2,000 more XP for his next level.

Simon final update
Oh dear - Simon eventually stretched his luck too far.  Got treasure from the pirates' cave and the ankheg's nest to get back his wand of monster summoning then 'helped' Drizzt against some gnolls and dealt with the party there.  Moving on to the mine site he recovered the idol and killed the doomsayer with a combination of his own and a wand's magic missiles, but received a chop in return.  Down to 23 HPs he decided to heal himself by using vampiric touch on a wild dog rather than just travelling invisibly away.  Unfortunately the dog reacted before the spell finished casting and a critical hit meant game overPosted Image.

Rather an ignominious end after having done most of the hard work with the character.  I had a pretty clear idea of how all the remaining battles could have been won and none of them looked like being too difficult.  However, the success or failure of those plans will have to wait for the next aspiring hero.

If you don't mind the travel time  there's nothing to stop you from returning to the city and coming back to Candlekeep later (if you haven't already used the book to get inside of course).
