Quick Note on Alastria's Game

After considering a number of strategied, Alastria ultimately decided to avoid confrontation at the Iron Throne- the area is too confining for her to operate safely.

She is at Candlekeep now. And, unfortunately ill prepared. It's been years since I've played BG1. I did not recall tha she would be whisked off to Candlekeep upon returning to Belt.

We'll see how it goes. I'm worried about her at this point.

What Grond0 said.

... and when you do go in get at least one potion of STR 24 (23 may be OK if you'll get the DUHM Bhaalspawn power).

You'll need it to open a couple of very interesting locked containers...

EDIT: Of course the contents of those containers may not be too relevant for Alastria, but I always found it extremely annoying to have to leave them unlooted. :)

Thanks for the reminder AnonymousHero. Unfortunately, bashing wasn't an option for her there since she can't drink the exceptional strength potions. Polymorph Self: Ogre->DUHM is the best she can do and that just gets her to 21. She did remember to Knock though. The Wisdom Tomes matter for her.

Best,

A

@ Grond0. That occured to me when Alastria spawned in, but I kind of freaked when that SCS Ogre Mage crew appeared. She ran in.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game:

Alastria has made it through the Keep.

There were 2 very close calls: the Lightning trap, and the Great Doppleganger fight.

The Lightning Trap very nearly killed her. It was her second pass through it. And since she had a pretty high VTed HP total and the Boots of Grounding, I didn't take it very seriously. A few bad luck bounces proved my folly. She made it though.

The Great Doppleganger battle was dicey to. I boched it doubly. First, I wasn't expecting disabling magicks there. A Potion of Clarity gulp saved her. She's out now though. (Note to Self: Greenstone Amulet before fighting Dopplegangers...). The other issue was that I picked the wrong form. I had Alastria go Spider there only to find that the Dopplegangers were immune to Poison. Interestingly, she was rescued by Dedre and Arkanis. She ran, and when she did, the Dopplegangers took a hard left and started fighting Alastria's old training partners. She then made a a break for the exit...

At this point it's all about Gold for Alastria. She needs wands, darts, potions and scrolls but she's very nearly broke. She'll need to do some old fashion gold-and-glory (or in her language "praises-and-prizes") adventuring to pay the bills.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Best,

A.

Sorry you died Grondo I was thinking you might have problems with that low of life. I dont know if your into mods, im not too much, but try and find a helm so you dont take crits. See if Rogue rebalancing has one. I think it does for BG1 Tutu.

I run around alot, as im sure most ppl here do, but its only a matter of time before you get cornered or they get a crit at the wrong time for you. Low life means you are dead, cant chug pots quick enough. They should have the BG2 SOA heal pots in chapter 5. Since you can easily get 70+life by then. Not the BG2 TOB ones of course (unless you make them 1k each to purchase). Also could of made something to boost Con since alot of the NPC's have low Con. Maybe a ring even with +3 con and nothing else.

Decided to try this again with a Dwarf F/T Multi (since I usually play this class in BG2). Took a long time to roll 90 on stats (wont play with less).

Posted Image

Left Candlekeep, and headed to Bergost, calmed down Marl and returned a book, then headed to Friendly Arm Inn (killed ogre on the way for his belt). Grabbed Mage ring and took out assasin. Then got Golden Pants from the rude nobleman. bought reputation up to 18 and headed to Ulgoths Beard to buy Greenstone amulet and Blue Cloak. Did the quest  to help the Priestess get her bowl back from the fisherman.

Posted Image

Headed toward Naskel, grabbing the stealth boots and Letter for Mirian from her dead Hubby. Went west and cleared the whole area except for Drizzt (left him alive), but dropped off some ammo. Upon arriving in Naskel grabbed the Ankheny Plate and kill the assasin in the inn.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Grabbed more ammo and returned to kill Drizzt, since I wanted all his items to use. Ive only been able to ever him him with crits so it really doesnt matter the level I kill him at (IMO), think I was 4/4 by now.

Posted Image

Went to Firewine Bridge and grabbed gauntlets. then headed over to kill Bassilus for the reward.

Posted Image
Posted Image

At this point wanted more exp and gold, for Missle Necklace and Invis Ring. Farmed Flesh Golems in cave til i ran out of heal pots. They can be back stabbed and half the time it kills them. Just rest (u cant, u get interrupted) sneak off and stab them, rinse and repeat. got up to 100k total exp before i left.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Did the Nashkel mines (forgot to take screenshot of Cleric Boss on level 3. Returned to town then cleared the Amazon Women and ghouls for exp and gold.

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Headed to Beregost and killed mage to get Bandit Camp Location. Headed there and Killed Tarzok I thin kwas his name (the guy with the Full Plate), Cleared out tent and opened up Cloakwood. Ran through all Cloakwood maps, only stopping on the first to get the non-detection Cloak. Then killed baddies outside mine. Headed down to level 4 (at level 2 the mage killed herself with her own lightning bolt,LOL) had a hard time this time with the Doomguards, usually I just wack and chug but for some reason I was missing alot and had to run off 3 times to heal and I only took them 1 at a time.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Went To BG and sold Stuff at Sorceress Sundries. Got Dex Tome which i needed a lot. Opened up all maps in the city, then grabbed Bauldrens Helm and  Pickpocketed Cloak. Killed mage in Northen part of city for his +2 ring and +1 Int tome at the top of his tower. Pickpocketed the  Wisdom tome from the Priest Temple. Cleared out the Seven Suns and Top floor of Iron Throne ( i hate this fight with no summon ability. alot of shooting with missle necklace and hiding around corners).

Posted Image
Posted Image

Went to Candlekeep at this point,  headed to fourth floor and killed Iron throne leaders. Then went to top floor cause there was something good there to get but I couldnt find anything  I wanted, Got arrested at this point. Level 1 of catacombs got both Tomes and a a few other goodies, Ran through level 2 stealthed. was gonna run through level 3 but decided to get the throwing axe. Almost died to the spiders right befoer the Basilusk. Set off a trap and was held while they beat on me and poisioned. Saw my life going down. When I made my save for the web trap, put on free action ring and gulped a poision cure/health pot (purple color ones). ran off and killed them 1 at a time. Close call would of been fine if I had put ring on as soon as I set of trap instead of waiting.

Posted Image

Head back To BG City and sell stuff, Then meet Sarvoeks Girlfriend and she tells me not to kill him, but take out his other girlsfriend. Sounds Like the guys a pimp or something. Anyways I rescue the poisioned Duke and take him to the harbor master. Then I kill Slythe an Kristin in The Underceller.

Posted Image

I then buy a bunch of potions for the next part cause I know one of the 2 Dukes has to live and the mage dies quick. So I go in buff up and get lucky The Male/Fighter one lives. Sarvoek hits me like 6 times and it takes 20 hp a shot. I only hit him once. But then I look back and see that he gets 16 or better on his rolls. so now i dont feel so bad. At this point Im read to track him in the Maze and Undercity. I havent gone to the Middle of the city and gottened poisioned with the Gaes, so im wondering if this is needed to complete the game?? Have always done it before. Didnt kill his girlfriend either on the top floor of the iron throne. I feel ive only done maybe 25-35 % of the game Ive skipped alot since i got All my items I need and maxed level by Cloakwood. Party of 6 would be different, since exp get split up, you need all the areas for items/exp.

Im gonna skip TOTSC, I like the ice cellar/ mage prision part where u gotta get the Shandalar (I think is his name) cloak. Werewolf Island isnt that great. and the last guy  can only be hit by certain weapons, not sure about that battle (Can a solo Cleric/ any other class even do this?? I dont think there are any Cleric weapons to hurt him and you need to kill him to get off the island if I remember right). Could do it but thers no loot for me there. Durlogs Tower, havent done in like 8 years. I always skip that. I do remember too many traps and i put no points in traps yet. So I might go get wisdom tome and call it good.

They should of had items in those 3 expansion areas to fill in the armor/weapons/items for characters that have nothing or  crappy items for the slots(example a mage or rogue helm, since they get no helms in Vanilla, or a +3 club since theres no good clubs in the game, +2  Amulet of Protection, etc). That way you are heavily nudged to go there for items (unless you like your thief taking critical hits).

Rather an ignominious end after having done most of the hard work with the character.  I had a pretty clear idea of how all the remaining battles could have been won and none of them looked like being too difficult.  However, the success or failure of those plans will have to wait for the next aspiring hero.

Sorry for your loss, yeah sometimes the little things kill us.

As for my own game I'm back to where the previous incarnation of Kaela died having just skipped the entire spider map under Sanctuary and a potion of freedom. Made a little mistake going in with just Sanctuary but luckily she saved against one of the traps to allow her to drink the potion of freedom.

Yeah, bad luck Grond.

I feel somewhat the same way; it's always the little things that get you. After having a number of near-misses in my own game thanks to silly mistakes, I lost to a bandit guy who should have been fairly straightforwards. I actually did that fight again and won easily (both the melee guys failed saves vs Entangle and Hold Person, and even though the mage saves vs Miscast Magic this time, Magic Missile took him down).

I might start another char with this install some time in the future.

Another update

Kaela goes up against Drasus and Company
This was in particular a difficult battle as Kaela Heights was run off the map twice because I had no idea how to proceed with this battle. The three sets of animate dead were destroyed by this party, however here's how the three assaults went. The first attack proved initially helpful as Kaela picked off one of the mages, but then Drasus with his boots of speed proceeded to run her off the property. In a fair match up Drasus seems to be the much better fighter. The second go around did not prove to be much insightful. In these types of battles the attrition war favors Kaela because she can just off the map and refuel. I'm not sure if this particular party does the same but whatever the case, I did learn something useful. Rigid thinking works on the fighters of the group. Kaela managed to use rigid thinking on Genthore and he was attacking Rezdan but Kaela was yet again being chased down by Drasus. In the third assault I had planned to do it once more to Genthore as I knew now that he could be hit with the spell, however Drasus was chosen by accidently and lo and behold he did not save against it. Kaela then hit Rezdan with command and she used her bullets to wipe away his mirror images. This time even though most of the skeletons had been wiped clean off the field, Kaela manage to defeat this party. With rigid thinking, Drasus is rendered harmless against Kaela's bullets.

The Second Level
Under Sanctuary and protection from lightning(she had acquired level 7 cleric recently) she triggered both traps that shot lightning. This trap apparently only targeted her and once the Sanctuary wore out she became public enemy one as the gang of mercenaries came after her. She rests and comes back to fight these enemies. The mage takes himself and his allies out by casting a lightning bolt in one of the thin corridors. Silly mage. With her own tiny army of skeletons she engages the remainder of the enemies and takes them out.

The Fight with Davaeorn
The fight with Davaeorn took two initial steps. One was the scouting phase in which Kaela Heights wanted to see what she was up against, and the next phase was her actual going up against Davaeorn. A guard was waiting for her at the entrance room so she used the spell domination on him and fed him to the Battle Horrors. Her bullets of +1 and +2 had no effect on the Battle Horrors. When this occurred she found out that all her spells had been greyed out. She retreated to the next room and then up to the first level to rest.

The next time she went in with the wand of the heavens which gives out a flamestrike with every charge. She found out she could indeed melee the battle horrors with her hammer, however the Battle Horrors were better fighters then her so she managed to divide and conquer. After they were destroyed it was Davaeorn's turn. Through her journey she had picked up a potion of magic resistance, and she also picked up something around Cloakwood, whatever the case she used both potions she picked up against Davaeorn who managed to summon several ghouls against her. But at this point Kaela tore through them like a meat cleaver and Davaeorn turned into simply a mage who was meleeing Kaela. Down he went. During this fight Kaela reached the cap level.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game:

Alastria has rescued Duke Eltan. She took advantage of the opportunity to play with one of the SCS Greater Doppelgangers. I was pleased to see that Teleport Field-> Remove Magic-> Teleport Field effectively de-claws them (I expected this to work, but it was nice to see it actually happen). I'm now more hopeful about the Palace Battle. It would be nice to have some friends to hand out the beats while Alastria protects the Dukes though...

Slythe and Krystin are next.

Best,

A.

Btw. I'm now grateful that the Doppelganger's in the Catacombs had cast Horror and Dire Charm. Were it not for that, I wouldn't have known that Alastria would need a Mind Shield to fight them. She would have certainly fell to one of their Confusion slaps had that not happened.

Btw II: I'm glad to see Kaela making good progress Shadow_Leech!

Thank you Alesia! I'm realizing that even a capped Fighter/Cleric still isn't the end all melee even in vanilla Baldur's Gate. They can't take Battle Horrors straight up, and I almost lost her to Meilum just right after the Davaeorn due to my overconfidence. I shudder at the thought.

Good luck against Slythe and Krystin!

P.S Those SCS greater doppelgangers seem a bit too scary for my F/C.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game

The battle with Slythe and Kristin went as expected. There isn't much that a Thief and a Thief-Mage can do against a Jelly in a Telefield. They were dumbfounded.

Now comes the tough part....

Quick Note on Alastria's Game

Now that Alastria has Draw on Holy Might, her melee abilities are more than a gimmick. In Spider form, she can adminster ~185HP worth of Physical Damage and Poison in a round of melee combat. That's no joke in BG1. Her THACO, 14, could be better of course. However, her defense compensates (-10 AC, Mirror Imaged, Scroll Casting). Potion buffs can improve both the THACO and AC.

She's an awkward but flexible and capable character at this point.

She hasn't made any storyline progress since the last post. She's still raising gold. I'll post when she reaches the Palace.

Best,

A.

Decided to skip Durlogs Tower once again and go for the final battle, loaded up on everything I needed.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Stealthed through the maze and past the first group in the underdark.

Posted Image

Decided to kill Saravoek's Girlfriend just to warm up.

Posted Image

Went inside and scouted around. Launched a fireball from the missle necklace to start things off. All but Saravoek came out. Not sure how it started but all 3 of the guys started fighting each other. I think Angelo cast a fireball and it hit the other 2. Didnt kill him, the other 2 guys did. Killed the big ogre Tazok, he hit me pretty good even with -10 ac. Protection from magic scroll worked great. lasted the rest of the fight. I then used arrow of dispelling on the other mage and poision arrows to finish him. Saravoek I hit with dispelling arrow to make him loose his haste buff. This worked great. Ran around shooting poision arrows at him, since he couldnt catch me. He always saved vs the poision, so finally just drank some pots and went melee since I had 25 str (cloud giant pot and draw apon holy might). He hit me everytime but I was hitting hard and fast so he died quick.

First time doing this fight with out summons or reload. The dispelling arrows made it easy for sure. I think I will continue in BG2, but ive soloed it the last 4 times I play so might do a party this time. Best of luck to all.

PS I might try this again with a party of 6 and some mods, want to use the Cleric/Ranger I rolled earlier, since she rolled a 95 (highest roll ever if I remember).

Ahh, thanks. Ayaka hasn't died yet. So, I suppose thats a good thing.

First step is Candlekeep! Talked to Winthrop and bought a sword and a bow and arrow. Unlocked a chest got an armor, and infravision scroll, then talked to Firebeard and went looking for his scroll. Talked to a little old lady who is missing a book. Entered a building, killed the first assassin, and looted the place.

Posted Image

Talked a monk, a guy with a cow that said that the book was in the hay behind him, and that his cow needed an antidote. Found the book, took it back to the little old lady, and got a stone. Which the stone got sold right afterwards. Found a dwarf or a halfling that needed help with a rat infestation!

Posted Image

Once the rats were cleared out, Ayaka got five gold. Next, Ayaka talked to a guard that forgot to bring his sword with him when he got up to go to his post.  Then a little bit further down the street Ayaka talked to the Gatekeeper and decided to participate in his 'training exercise'. After that was done, Ayaka went into another building where another assassin wanted to kill her, but to no avail the assassin was killed first!

Posted Image

Talked to another monk, Then went to the next building and found a guard that said he that needed bolts, and looted a chest, hopefully with the sword for the one guard, and an antidote.  Ayaka went to the courtyard and talked a mage, who gave her the scroll that Firebeard needed. Then Ayaka returned to the Inn and talked to Firebeard, and bought  some bolts from Winthrop. Ayaka returned to the guard that needed the bolts, and he sounded very ungrateful. After  that she returned the sword the other guard, who also sounded very ungrateful. Then she gave the antidote to the man with the cow. Next Ayaka went back to the library courtyard and talked to her dear friend, Imoen. Once Ayaka was done with her conversation with Imoen, she talked to Gorion and told him that she was ready to leave. Gorion told Ayaka that if anything were to happen that she should go to the Friendly Arm Inn to find some associates of his named Khalid and Jaheria.

Once out of Candlekeep, and what seemed only a few miles, Gorion and Ayaka were ambushed by a mysterious man with glowing yellow eyes, two orges, and an unknown woman.

Posted Image

Ayaka had seen Gorion cut down before her very eyes, and then she started running, knowing very well that the man would probably go after her next.

Once morning came, Ayaka realized that  she was all alone until she heard a familar voice! The voice of her dear friend, Imoen. Imoen joined the party and the duo continued together until they met another duo named Xzar and Montarion.  Then further down the road they met a mysterious man wearing all red.

Posted Image

The group continued their quest until they reached the Friendly Arm Inn, and where another assassin was waiting. However, Montarion went up the stairs first so the man thought that the little halfling was Ayaka of Candlekeep, and attacked. However, once he made that mistake a guard killed him.

Posted Image

Then they entered the Inn, however, Xzar and Montarion left at Ayaka's request to meet her back at some dragon's den. Ayaka then talked to Khalid and Jaheria, who was on an important mission to Nashkel to figure out what is causing the Iron shortage.

Posted Image

The group's path was set, and they headed out for their adventure to Nashkel, however, on the way to Beregost the group found an ogre, and killed it.

Posted Image

The next obstacle was a group of bandits it was easy work dispatching them with an entangle spell and a sleep spell, however, Khalid bit the dust.

Posted Image

After that battle, the trio of Ayaka, Imoen, and Jaheria went to Beregost to find a temple to bring back Khalid, which they did, they also met a Cleric of Lathander named Gavin. (Didn't take a screenshot!), and started on their merry way back to Beregost, and to the High Hedge.

Wow - I don't think I've ever had so many condolences - thanks to Khrondorr, Alesia_BH, Shadow-Leech07 and The Fred.  Simon's end obviously struck a few chordsPosted Image.

In relation to helms my normal mod setup has a couple of Ioun stones available, but I'm not aware of any protections from critical hits in the cut-down list I've used for a specific BG1 challenge.  However, I'm comfortable with this.  On one level it's obviously a pain, but I think does provide an appropriate sense of fragility for certain classes.  Of course in normal circumstances I would not dream of having a bard with less than 16 constitution (in fact would have 18 to allow for those occasional slip-ups with a familiar) and that would make a lot of difference on its own.

I have just rolled up a new random bard - here are Lyrica's stats at the end of Candlekeep.
Posted Image
No particular penalties or bonuses in this lot, but generally highish scores so no excuses for failure there.

I thought a couple of screenshots from Simon's last adventures might be of general interest.  First, in using the cloak of polymorphing to escape from the pirate cave I noticed that a lightning strike on one sirene had been blamed on another - if only there was a reliable method for a mage to control the weather, this could be useful.
Posted Image

Second, I used the wolf form again to carry the farmer's son out of the ankheg nest (it has a strength of 18).  I successfully predicted it would be able to run past all the ankhegs in the nest, but hadn't planned on one of them following me outside (which I should have done in retrospect, given the tendency in SCS for enemies to follow between areas).  That gave it an attack on Simon that wasn't far off killing him a bit earlier than the dog.

Well, looks like its the end for Ayaka. I think I'm going to make a pure Cleric next run just to see how that goes.
Also, I apologize for the wall of text/pictures.

Continuing where we left off in the High Hedge. Ayaka met a ranger named Kivan, whose goals were to kill bandits in the area and find an ogre named Tazok, because of the fact that he killed someone important to Kivan.
Posted Image

Then, the group returned to Beregost again. There the group met a bard named Garrick, who said that his mistress, Silke, was in trouble so Garrick took us to her. However, when the men in question came up to us they were just trying to explain something and therefore, innocent of whatever Silke accused them of so instead of killing the men the group killed Silke.
Posted Image

After killing Silke the group entered the 'Red Sheaf' inn. Another assassin was in said inn, however, he was dispatched easily by our fearless adventurers.
Posted Image

Next, the party went to a house that was infested with spiders. Unfortunately, Imoen did not survive that encounter.
Posted Image

On the road to Nashkel the group stumbled across a band of hobgoblins, killed them, and Imoen leveled up to become a level two Bounty Hunter.
Posted Image

Once in Nashkel, the group had to rest at a nearby inn, however this inn also had an assassin, who was a cleric. She had cast a spell and Gavin got one shotted. This time Gavin decided to take a dirt nap.
Posted Image

Then the group roamed around Nashkel, and decided to explore. They talked to the mayor, and some bounty hunter reward guy who mistook Ayaka for some Greywolf fellow. Then they found a ranger named Minsc, who was looking for his companion. However, the group didn't have enough room so they sent Minsc to the Friendly Arm Inn. After that the band went to the carnival. Jaheria punched a guy and took his scroll, and we freed Branwen. Then Ayaka sent Branwen to the Friendly Arm Inn. Then the group moved around the carnival talking to various merchants, and even getting their gold stolen from them by a mystery thief. Then they entered a tent with two mages, however, the bad mage killed the good mage, but on a brighter side of things the party got two new robes. Posted Image

Then the party talked to some random mage that summons some exploding ogre, however, after talking two the mage three times the ogre decided to get a tad bit hostile.
Posted Image

Lastly, the group headed towards the Nashkel mines, and maybe to find Prism, so then they can get some gold.

When heading towards the mines the group found a gnome escaping a group of kobolds, however, the gnome ran while the group faced off against said kobolds.

Then the group found Prism, and decided to defend him from the Bounty Hunter Greywolf, and Gavin once again bit the dust. Which caused Khalid to get to level two.

The party headed back to Nashkel to revive Gavin, then back to the temple to receive a mission from Gavin's superior to go hunt down some bad person. However, Ayaka decided to go back to the Mines, where Gavin decided to take another nap due to a kobold's arrow.

Then the group exited the mines to revive Gavin again. Once he was revived the party decided to head back to the mines, however, the group got ambushed, and Ayaka died to a skeleton's foul arrow.

@SapphireIce101- Welcome to the challenge! Sorry for your loss (I wish I didn't have to say both in the same post...).

Looking forward to your next run.

@Grond0- Good luck with Lyrica. Btw, Where are you getting your portraits from? I typically create characters from portraits (I look at the pictures, and then give them the race, class, abilities, and personality that makes sense). I'm kind of exhausting my pic set. I'd like to have more and yours have looked good.

@Khrondorr- Nice work with Morala. Good luck in BG2.!

@Grimbergenme- I haven't seen Lord in the BG2 thread. Do you intend to continue his run? Other plans?

Nearly all the portraits I use (including the 2 you have commented on) are from standard BG portrait sites - I just google BG portrait and then browse for a while.  From memory I think the current one is Rhapsody (Elizabeth Haydon novels), which I have enjoyed in the past.  She is half-Lirin, which is one reason for the PC name as well as the obvious bardic connection.

Edit: the only character type I haven't found much joy with is monks and I have created my own portraits for those by adjusting monk pictures.  Also just found confirmation about the Rhapsody picture on Vaul's portrait site (http://www.vaulscast...gportraitf3.htm), though that wasn't where I originally got picture from (there's a lot of duplication across sites).
