Good look with Lyrica, Grond0. I've always wanted to see what a bard could do. Sorry for your loss SapphireIce, ambushes are tough.

Quick Note of Alastria's Game

Wow. It's going to take me a while to recover from that...

Alastria just completed the Palace Battle. It was undoubtedly the craziest Baldur's Gate fight that I've ever been a part of.

It spilled out onto the second floor, it spilled out onto the streets. It included swirling Doppelgangers, the Flaming Fist attacking Belt, Belt chunking Hostile Noblemen, and The Tweedles rescuing a Confused Alastria from the Hostile Flaming Fist. It was chaos. But in the end Alastria survived. So did Belt...

I'll post on the battle relatively soon. But to be honest, I haven't the slightest idea how to describe what happened there. It was madness. Alastria's run continues nonetheless.

Best,

A.

Nearly all the portraits I use (including the 2 you have commented on) are from standard BG portrait sites - I just google BG portrait and then browse for a while.  From memory I think the current one is Rhapsody (Elizabeth Haydon novels), which I have enjoyed in the past.

Understood. And thanks.

All of mine are from the huge French site. I haven't grazed though the others yet though. Perhaps I should.

Thanks again.

I think the Black Wyrm Lair had some links to some "50000 portraits" type sites. A quick search is probably your best bet.

Btw. The ordering is kind is admittedly non-sensical here. And it would be nice to have Final Update links for the Successes. Unfortunately, I can't cut/paste on the CPU I'm working on for some bizarre reason. I'll edit when possible.

Merrus is deceased; I did mention it, but it was a little post hidden amongst the many screenshots and success stories. I'm carying on with him for now (so I will probably not have a character for a bit), and after dying in the bandit camp we just did the whole spider area (with two party deaths) and stormed the party outside the Cloakwood mines with ease, but he's had one death so he's not a no-reloader any more.

Kaela takes up Silke and Meilum
The woman Silke is downed in two hits in Beregost, however the man Meilum is underestimated by me. Thankfully, at this point, Kaela has lots of leeway so even though she is dealt about thirty points of damage from Meilum per hit, and runs into a swarm of kobolds, she manages to save face and Sanctuary+Animate Dead. With this combo Meilum is down for the count. I suppose I did not learn anything from the last time, so thankfully my character was strong enough to counter even this grevious mistake.

The Iron Throne

Initially the plan was not to fight the Iron Throne members, and Kaela acted as thus, using Sanctuary to barge in and take the scrolls. But then Kaela got to thinking, might as well see what three sets of skeletons can do to this party, just as a bit of an experiment. After this party demolished the skeletons, Kaela got a real bad itch to commence battle, this is after the enemy wizard seemed to waste away all his dangerous spells and was left with chromatic orb and magic missile, or so Kaela found out. Kaela prebuffed and went to work. It wasn't a fierce battle to begin with, Kaela repeatedly retreated to drink healing potions and the what nots because the mage kept blasting her with chromatic orb and magic missile(as stated earlier). But after the spellbook went limp, Kaela came out on the attack with her old tactic of using her trusty sling. This is how she defeated the Iron Throne. Hit and run with time to spare. Their armor and spell scrolls will go to a worthy cause indeed.

The Catacombs

Kaela ran over the lightning trap and got herself killed. I did not really remember what kind of trap was in the catacombs so Kaela tripped over two of them and died. Boots of grounding managed to keep her alive for awhile but not so much. Errr...she was also a half-elf. I think I probably would have finished the game had I known what trap was there, I don't know how I forgot but oh well.

Quick Note on Alastria's Game

It looks like I'm going to have to do a bug-reload on the Sarevok Fight. Alastria got stuck in Jelly form. This happens sometimes. She was winning at the time.

Best,

A.

Edit: I decided to Ctrl-R dispel the Jelly form. This also dispelled her potion and scroll buffs of course so the bug hindered her on balance. I intend to complete the fight this way. I'll also do it bug-free afterwards.

BTW. Noted The Fred.

Alastria v. Sarevok (At the First Interlude...)

Alastria is farring well in the Sarevok Fight. Semja and Angelo are down. Semja fell to the Jelly, Angelo to the Spider. Their Skeleton Warrior incarnations were taken down with Meteors.

Of the remaining foes, the F/M has Jelly issues since he's wielding a Halbred. Tazok's Movement Rate is too low, and Sarevok appears to have Weapons Speed Factor issues. This looks like a win for Alastria. We'll see though. Resistance and Immunities concern me.

Best,

A.

I wonder if it could be worth mentioning in the progress-update posts whether a character is running solo and if not who their party is.

Also yes there are many portraits available in the Portrait City of BWL, this is where I find most of mine:

Sure: we can do that. And to the extent that Capped play is the norm here, Soloing is genuinely a challenge.

@Alesia - Congratulations on defeating Sarevok!

Alright, time to chronicle Kalyinara's run. So prepare for a wall of text/pictures again.

Prologue: Candlekeep

On the start of this grand adventure, that Gorion was starting her on, Kalyinara spoke to the local innkeeper, Winthrop, to purchase some needed equipment.
Posted Image

Kalyinara then talked to Firebead, only to learn that he was missing a scroll.
Posted Image

Next, Kalyinara spoke to a woman named Linda, who had to cut off her fiancee's arm just to save him from being killed.
Posted Image

Kalyinara exited the inn to find Phyldia, who lost a book called “The History of Halruua”.
Posted Image

While searching around for Firebead's scroll and Phyldia's book, Kalyinara entered a building where she met an unsavory character who tried to kill her.
Posted Image

Kalyinara then exited the building and talked a monk named Parda, and told him about what transpired within the building.
Posted Image

Then Kalyinara went over by the man with the cow, and he said that Phyldia's book was within a bale of hay right behind him. After retrieving the book Kalyinara went back to Phyldia and got a stone as a reward. Next, Kalyinara talked to someone named Reevor. (Makes me think of Reaver from Fable 2 and 3 for some strange reason. Probably because the names sound the same, or at least when I think I'm pronouncing it right.) Reevor had asked Kalyinara to clear out his store house of a Rat infestation, and had only got five gold from that venture.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Next, Kalyinara talked a guard named Hull, who had forgotten his sword. Then along the same path Kalyinara talked to the Gatewarden, and he asked Kalyinara if she wanted to get some training for the adventure that she was about to embark on. After that conversation Kalyinara went into the infirmary and talked to a Priest of Oghma to get a potion, and Linda's fiancee, ultimately convincing him to make Linda his squire. Then, Kalyinara went to master Obe for her training. After the training Kalyinara went into another building, which another person tried to kill her!
Posted Image

After leaving the building, Kalyinara talked to another monk named Karan, who had asked what happened in the building. Kalyinara ultimately told Karan that someone had tried to kill her.
Posted Image

Next, the young priestess of Lathander entered another building. Kalyinara talked to a guard that said that he needed a quarrel of bolts. Kalyinara inquired the guard on which chest was Hull's and grabbed his sword and an antidote. Then, Kalyinara went to the courtyard and talked to the man who had Firebead's scroll. After that Kalyinara went back to the inn. She sold the stone, returned the scroll, and bought the quarrel of bolts. Then Kalyinara returned to the building with the guard that wanted the bolts, however, he sounded very ungrateful and called her a 'money grubber'. Then she returned the sword to Hull, who called Gorion a fool because Kalyinara took too long in retrieving the sword. After that business was over, Kalyinara returned to the courtyard and talked to her dearest friend in all of Candlekeep, Imoen.
Posted Image

After the conversation with Imoen, Kalyinara talked to her father, Gorion, and told him that she was ready to leave Candlekeep.
Posted Image

However, before leaving Candlekeep Gorion told Kalyinara that if anything were to happen that she should head to the Friendly Arm Inn and find Khalid and Jaheria, and that she could trust them. Then a few miles away from Candlekeep a mysterious band of people showed up asking for Kalyinara or that Gorion could be hurt.
Posted Image

Hmm, I think I'm going to post Chapter One a little bit later. It also feels like I'm writing a paper for school. Haha.

Congrats Alesia.  I do admire your ability to plan and concentrate throughout the whole game.

Lyrica unfortunately didn't make it. She was level 5 having only been attacked 3 times in the game to date, which was pretty good.  However, she then decided to take on Zordral at the carnival.  I thought her 3 lots of magic missiles should win the fight, but Zordral survived those.  He also survived a magic missile scroll (after taking a potion) and, although the game information said he was running away, he turned red again as soon as he got out of the tent and started running around.  At this point I should have run away, but tried to finish him with an arrow and got a fraction too far away from the tent - his charm person caught me as I was fumbling with the ties on the tent flap.
Posted Image

I know I should have got the green amulet once I could travel invisibly and I had far more money than I needed to do this, but I just can't shake that desire to take one risk too manyPosted Image - oh well.

Just thinking about the way I was playing the game if anyone fancies a new challenge how about trying to complete the game without ever being attacked (by a missile or melee weapon) - that would be much more suited to solo than party play.  I think it's unlikely it could be achieved by a character without access to invisibility because of ambushes while travelling, but I suppose a melee type could cheese in a familiar to give themselves that option.  For a bard or mage I'm pretty sure it would be possible, although it might test even your powers of concentration!

Sorry, that your character died Grond0! I hope you get it next time! Alright, time to post chapter one. Hope that this doesn't seem like a wall of text or wall of

Chapter One: Flight from Candlekeep, and Journey to Nashkel

Kalyinara had seen Gorion get cut down by a man with yellow glowing eyes, and she could not believe it. Then she was taken out of that memory when she heard Imoen's voice.
Then the one became a duo, and they went to find Gorion's body to see if they could get anything useful out of it, or to at least point them in the correct direction. Then Imoen had asked if one of the corpses were Gorion.
After that, Kalyinara and Imoen found some trouble with some diseased gibberlings. It wasn't long after that Imoen died, and Kalyinara found some help with another duo, Montaron and Xzar, that were headed to Nashkel.
Posted Image
Further down the road the trio, carrying Imoen's items, found an old man fully dressed in red, and Kalyinara asked if he could provide any help for her current predicament, however, he only pointed her towards the Friendly Arm Inn.

After that, Montaron lead the way up the stairs, where another assassin awaited Kalyinara's group. Next, the mage cast his spells of Mirror Image, and sleep, which had got Xzar, however, Imoen's Wand of Missiles killed the mage. Then upon looting the mage's body Imoen said that she wanted his spellbook, Kalyinara told Imoen to be careful.
Posted Image
After that, the group went into the Friendly Arm Inn, where they met a boy named Jopi, who talked about the roads, and not being able to get to Baldur's Gate. After talking to Jopi, the group came across a druid, Jaheria, and a Fighter, Khalid, who seemed to be able to pick Kalyinara out of the crowd. Then, Jaheria asked what Kalyinara was going to do about Gorion's body, and Kalyinara said that she would return it to Candlekeep someday.
After buying some proper supplies, the group went upstairs and talked to a woman who wanted her belt back from some rogue ogre. The group went up another flight of stairs to talk to another lady, whose house was infested with spiders, and decided to help her. Then the group left the Friendly Arm Inn, and entered a house owned by a woman named Joia. Joia requested that the group go find her Flamedance ring. The group of Kalyinara, Imoen, Montaron, Xzar, Khalid, and Jaheria went Hobgoblin hunting until they found the group with Joia's flamedance ring. The group returned the ring and got a reward.
Next, the party started their journey towards Nashkel, and finding a rogue ogre, and a Caravan Bandit Leader. The Caravan Bandit Leader killed Montaron, and almost killed Khalid, however, once the leader was taken care of the rest of the bandits fell with her.\\
Posted Image
Then, the group returned to The Friendly Arm Inn, and returned a belt and got seventy gold, ten was the original reward, but the extra sixty was to find a bath. The party decided to rest at the Friendly Arm Inn, where Imoen, and Kalyinara talked about adventuring. Next, the party traveled to Beregost. Where Kalyinara and Imoen discussed about Beregost, a frying pan, and getting a new pink tunic for Imoen. A man also walked up to the group and asked if they needed directions.
After that, the group went to the High Hedge and found a Ranger/Archer named Kivan, who was hunting bandits in the area, and an ogre named Tazok because Tazok killed someone special to Kivan. However, there was not enough room in the group for Kivan, so Montaron and Xzar left.
Posted Image

Then the group went back to Beregost, where a woman named Alanna asked for some help for her neighbor that got turned into a slime. A diary was found that pointed the adventurers toward a potion seller. After exiting the house and attempting to find the man that sold the neighbor the potion that turned him into a slime. Jaheria asked if there was anything that Kalyinara wanted to learn about nature.
The group exited the first inn and went towards the Red Sheaf Inn, where another assassin was awaiting the group's arrival. The killing blow on the assassin was delivered by Kivan.
Posted Image
Upon investigating the inn, however, the party found a person who wanted to the group to find a sword that was within some gnoll's grasp. After talking to that man, they found the correct man who sold the potion to the neighbor and bought it for one-hundred gold. Then the group went back to Alanna, and gave her the reversal potion to turn the man slime back into a man!
Next, the group went to Feldpost's Inn, where a man named Marl, would not stop bothering Kalyinara's group. So an altercation began and Marl ended up dying to the fierce adventurers, which caused Kalyinara to level up to level two. Then the group met an insane Gnome named Tiax, which they decided to take along just to fill up the last spot until a suitable replacement arrives. The group now consisting of Kalyinara, Imoen, Khalid, Jaheria, Kivan, and Tiax went to the spider infested house, which ended up killing Tiax, and nearly killing Khalid.
Posted Image

The group went to the temple, and revived Tiax, then they went back to the Friendly Arm Inn and turned in the spider body, boots, and wine. Next, the group finally started making their way down to Nashkel, when Kivan decided to comment on Kalyinara's elven heritage. Further down the road, A Flaming Fist Mercenary pulled the group to a stop and accused them of being bandits. Jaheria called the mercenary an idiot, while Kalyinara convinced the mercenary that they were just a band of travelers.

Then the group went back to Beregost and turned in a letter to a woman which caused Imoen to hit level two.
Posted Image
The group started back on their quest to get to Nashkel. Until they met a strange man that was from Waterdeep, and then Imoen said that she wanted to go to Waterdeep, or Neverwinter. Lastly, the group finally made it to Nashkel, where the next step of their journey awaits.
Party:
Kalyinara - Priest of Lathander - level 2
Imoen - Bounty Hunter - Level 2
Khalid - Fighter - Level 1
Jaheria - Fighter/Druid - Level 1/1
Kivan - Archer - level 1
Tiax - Cleric/Thief - level 1/1

Location:
Nashkel

Now, I think I'm going to start posting in parts, because wall of texts/pictures aren't fun, and its like alot of work to even put it up. Heh.

A Medley of Alastria's Battles

Before posting the final fight, I thought I'd provide a medley of key moments from her late game fights. Here they are.

With a wand that could hurt the Battle Horrors -and functioning Boots of Speed- Davaeorn had no hope against Jelly Alastria.
Posted Image

This was Alastria's closest call.
Posted Image

This was her biggest folly.
Posted Image

Do you know what time it is Slythe? That's right. It's time to look really, really, stupid...
Posted Image

Calling the Duchal Palace Fight "chaotic" seems like an understatement.
Posted Image

Killing is our father's work. And I'm better at it than you. Nanny, nannies!
Posted Image
Posted Image

I'll definitely post on the Final Battle. I'll cover the other ones on request only. Let me know.

Best,

A.

What happened to Davaeorn to give him the yellow circle? Spook? I don't have much experience of SCS mages, did he use Minor Globe or had it expired / you removed it?

Also what do the SCS mages do against the jelly? Remove Magic (you just re-use the jelly form from the Special Abilities menu because Polymorph Self itself is undispellable) and then throw meteors (mostly missing)?

It seems to me that there are a couple of key issues with Polymorph Self that make it so powerful.

1) the Mustard Jelly has 100% magic resistance (should be 10% according to PnP)
2) the spider form is clearly overpowered (should either have the 4 apr of the Sword Spider OR the poison, not both, and in any case the poison should allow a save)

Also there's the problem of scripting enemies to change weapon type (e.g. a thief to change from his ineffective short sword to a club). This is hard if not impossible to do, meaning the piercing immunity of the jelly is more powerful than it should be.

What did more damage to Sarevok? Your actual attacks or the Fireshields? :P

Anyhow it is interesting to read about your games, I don't intend my Polymorph Self comments as criticism.

Alastria v. Sarevok

I really didn't know what to expect in this fight. Having never faced SCS Sarevok, I hadn't the slightest idea whether Alastria had a chance to get it right on her first try. That thought haunted me throughout Alastria's run. But by the time she got there, having escaped the Duchal Palace fight and a few other scrapes by the hair on her Flindy-Chin-Chin, I had a liberating nothing-to-lose attitude. Happily, the final fight was a smooth ride- smoother than expected.

The Plan

Buff up in Jelly form- being sure to include Protection from Missles and Elemental Protection. Focus on Semaj first. Once he is down, Alastria will be free to use her more mobile and flexible forms. Using whichever form makes sense, take down the acolytes one by one. Once Sarevok is alone, dig into the stack of scrolls and end him using cast-and-attack tactics.

Execution

Due to my lack of foreknowledge, Alastria's battle plan was pretty vague for this fight. Nonetheless, it provided a framework that was helpful throughout.

Here's Alastria approaching in Jelly form. Note the Pro Normal Missles and Elemental buffs. With a high movement rate -and a lot of room to run- Alastria was nearly invulnerable at this stage.
Posted Image

As planned Semaj went first. He was killed with the Necklace of Missles. And thanks to Jelly form, he didn't cast a single offensive spell. One down.
Posted Image

Once Semaj fell, Alastria spent some time assessing her enemies. She noticed that while Tazok, Diarmid, and Sarevok were always together, Angelo tended to wander. She used Invisibilty to peel Angelo off. Once he was alone, she buffed up her Spider form and took him down. At 5 APR, 17 Damage+Poison Per Hit, he didn't last long. Fortuitously, Semaj's Skeleton Warrior incarnation was nearby- allowing Alastria to finish it off without rebuffing.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Next, Alastria took down Tazok and Diarmid. They were both killed with Wands and opportunistic nip-and-run hits in Spider form (No Screenshots).

At this point, it was just Sarevok and the Skeleton Warrior incarnations of Tazok and Diarmid. Interstingly, it was the Skellies and their 100% Magic Resistance that frightened Alastria. She was on her third and final Pro Normal Missles scroll. If she didn't melee them intro submission before Pro Missles ran out, she could be in trouble. Time to buff up the Flind form.
Posted Image

The Flind cut through the Skeleton Warriors fast. Time to take on Big Brother.

The plan here was to relly on scrolls. At 3 APR, ~21 Damage Per Hit, and a THACO of 9, the Flind Halbred might do some good.  But that would be a bonus. Alastria was counting on her Fireshield and Skull Trap scrolls for damage. Her 7 Mirror Image scrolls and 1 Stoneskin scroll would handle the defense.

The Halbred ended up being more helpful then expected- it accounted for ~45 Hitpoints worth of damage. The Fireshield and Skull Trap scrolls did much of the heavy lifting though. A well timed VT helped as well.

Eventually, Sarevok sliced his way through Alastria's Mirror Image scroll stack. And a Sorceress can't last long in melee with Sarevok- not without being fast like a freak that is. This meant Spider. Spider Alastria's Movement Rate and Weapon Speed Factor advantange gave her the edge here, but Sarevok's range still made him dangerous.

At this point, both Alastria and Sarevok were Near Death. Alastria wanted to disengage, buff, and heal, but she was worried about Sarevok's regeneration rate- she didn't want to end up in a stalemate. How much could he regenerate with 3 doses of Poison coursing through him? Perhaps not much, but she didn't know. And that's what concerned her. She disengaged nonetheless, and when she did, she discovered that the Poison had slowed Sarevok to the point where he was no longer a threat. She pealed away, and them pounded him with the Wand of Frost. Fin.

Final Comments

Phew! That was the wildest run I can remember. Alastria is no pushover, but nothing comes easy with her- you always feel as though you're one step from disaster.

I haven't decided on my next move: I may move Alastria onto BGII or I may pick Ao back up- I'm not sure. We'll see. Either way, I'll remember Alastria's BG1 run fondly.

Alright, final update on Kalyinara.

Entered the town of Nashkel, went to the Inn and found another assassin, and killed the Assassin. Then went to the carnival fought with the ogre, and then the mage, who killed Tiax. Then talked to the guy with the stone scroll, used the stone scroll, then got rid of Tiax for Branwen. Then went to the mines, found Prism and killed Greywolf. Then went down into the mines and fought though it until Mulahey.
Got to Mulahey and then death.

I forget where the people leved up at but here was the party until the death part.

Party:
Kalyinara - Priest of Lathander - Level 3
Imoen - Bounty Hunter - Level 3
Khalid - Fighter - Level 2
Jaheria - Fighter/Druid - Level 1/1
Kivan - Archer - Level 1
Branwen - Cleric - Level 2.

Location: Nashkel Mines

Now that I look at it. I think they were too low in level so thats why I got squished in the mines, but I think I'm going to play for fun now. Good luck everyone else that is participating!

What happened to Davaeorn to give him the yellow circle?

Pain. He was Near Death at that point.

Also what do the SCS mages do against the jelly? Remove Magic (you just re-use the jelly form from the Special Abilities menu because Polymorph Self itself is undispellable) and then throw meteors (mostly missing)?

Not much. They don't use Remove Magic. And if they did, it would just peel off the weapon. Sometimes, they try. Other times, the just vanish. Aside from that, they do what Davaeorn did: take a beating and cry.

I think the 100% Magic Resistance makes sense in the context of BG. Otherwise, the Transmuter Kit would be unbearably awful against Mages. And you do sacrifice a lot of offense for the privilege of using it.

The Spider is often overlooked. The 5APR and Poison are really nice but I often find the Weapon Speed Factor to be it's most important attribute. The Flind is can be pretty impressive too.

Also there's the problem of scripting enemies to change weapon type (e.g. a thief to change from his ineffective short sword to a club). This is hard if not impossible to do, meaning the piercing immunity of the jelly is more powerful than it should be.

Interstingly, I did see some Assasins put their Short Swords away and equip their Bows when Alastria went Jelly. Perhaps they can go Melee->Range but not Piercing-> Slashing.

What did more damage to Sarevok? Your actual attacks or the Fireshields? Posted Image

I didn't count, but I'd guess the Fireshield. That was the plan.Posted Image

Anyhow it is interesting to read about your games, I don't intend my Polymorph Self comments as criticism.

No offense taken. It's a funky spell and pretty powerful in someways. It does take a lot of effort to make it work though. There is a reason why most mages aren't running around in Flind form...

Best,

A.

Well as far as I know the scripting commands you have to play with are EquipMostDamagingRanged() and EquipMostDamagingMelee() so that makes sense. The script can detect immunity to the melee weapon's damage type and switch to a ranged weapon but not to an alternative melee weapon.

EDIT: I made a slight mistake with this; it's actually EquipMostDamagingMelee() and EquipRanged()
