At Candlekeep Mendas did serious damage, but that was sorted upon leaving Candlekeep.
What was Mendas doing there? Or did you mix up some names?
Good luck! I think Cleric/Illusionists are really cool characters.

Had a very good roll for a cleric/illusionist.

From the Dark Horizons Mod I think. He isn't the same Mendas as the one at Ulgoth's Beard. He can't be as I just killed him. He's an assassin who is a bit more powerful than Shank and Carbos. At least he would be if I hadn't modded Shank and Carbos myself to give them knives that cause them to be more dangerous. Shocker and the like. With them modified, they sometimes even kill mages and suchlike.
I agree about cleric/illusionists. They have great potential, and a duo alongside a fighter/thief is awesome.
This one, Scarlet Tantour, because of his Elminster-like hat, has a charisma of 6, his only weakness, though lack of strength has meant a lot of unopened chests.
No potion of Clarity in Candlekeep. ![]()
He helped Tenya without any bloodshed: the same with the widow with a zombie husband.
Returned ring to Joia before heading to Nashkel. Gained the innate ability to heal. Turned down the reward from Oublek,. Did some baby sitting. Picked up the wand of frost and the ring of fire protection south of Nashkel. Returned Samuel to the FAI where Lina gave him a VERY relaxing massage.
.
He then dealt with a belt fetishist to the south before helping Melicamp.
He had put on a certain belt and as a result Mellicamp got quite fruity. His master asked if She would bring him a tome.
Kazi, Cleric/Illusionist:
Jabbar's first adventure had been short-lived. Although he might get a second chance in future, I chose to roll another character which I had in mind for some time now (being mostly inspired by a gorgeous portrait).

Kazi is a neutral good cleric/illusionist, a follower of Baravar Cloakshadow. Her starting proficiencies are divided between slings and maces. She's been generously equipped with a personal amulet - Baravar's Boon (as described below).
Full character chart:

It is said that if a member of Baravar Cloakshadow's clergy exhibits an unusually strong inclination towards arcane magic, he or she might eventually be blessed with the ability to better allocate one's inner mental strength and capacity between the "Art" and the "Power". Referred to as the Boon of Baravar, it mostly takes form of an enchanted trinket worn by the priest at all times.

Martha, half-elven Totemic Druid, adventuring in Chapter 5 with Imoen, Kagain, Eldoth and Skie
Did the Firewine dungeon. Skie was cloaked by an Invisibility from Imoen and she removed the traps. Kagain took point in a crossing to fight off all the kobolds that happened to find him (they have effective calls for help, so when there is one, usually all that are close will follow). Skie missed two traps. One was my fault (I didn't advance slowly enough) but that was just a Magic Missile trap (3 missiles) that a few Goodberries could fix. The other was a trap that she actually spotted, but she tripped it when I ordered her to remove it. I paused the game as a Fireball was flying towards her. She was just close enough to Kagain so that a fire resist potion could be passed to her. Cheesy, yes, but that trap shouldn't have gone off in the first place, I think.
On the Firewine map, Eldoth successfully pickpocketed Bentan for a sweet PfM scroll but then he failed at pickpocketing Poe (not surprisingly, Bards are notoriously hard to filch things from). Poe cast a Dire Charm on Kagain, Martha replied with a Charm on Poe. The rest of my party pulled back, Kagain (red circle) killed Poe (green circle) so we got his stuff anyway, with no reputation loss.
My plan against Kahrk was to have Kagain use our new nifty arrows - Dispelling (10 arrows bought) followed by Slaying (the one and only for sale at Sundries) but Kahrk opened up with Protection from Magic Weapons. Not knowing if Dispelling/Slaying arrows count as magic or regular arrows, I decided to have Kagain drink a Magic Blocking potion and wait out the four rounds. Then he tried to hit with the Dispelling arrows. And tried, and tried, to no avail. OK, Kahrk does have some spells going that make him harder to hit but come on, 10 missed shots with a THAC0 of 4, that's just ridiculous! Either Kagain was terribly unlucky, or Kahrk had some protection I didn't notice, or he simply has a cheatingly low AC. Imoen cast Slow near him but that didn't slow him down. You can't save against Slow, and there was no 'Magic Resistance' message. Innate permanent Haste ability? Once he seemed to be out of spells, we eventually wore him down with magic. Kagain couldn't hold his ground and had to get moving. Kahrk switched targets a few times. As he was chasing Imoen, she moved straight sideways from Eldoth's perspective. Eldoth seized an opportunity:

We returned to Durlag's Tower. We buffed Kagain with Resist Fear (Eldoth) and Chaotic Commands (Martha), gave him an Oil of Speed and sent him to fight the Greater Doppelganger duo. Painful, but he made it.
Imoen buffed Kagain with stoning protection and he cleared out the roof. We found Bala's Axe in the container there. It was put to good use right away, against the ghost mage on third floor:

Hits through Stoneskins, very nice! Note that I was ready with a magic protection potion, but that wasn't needed. Even though Miscast Magic does leave a 20% chance of casting spells, it looks like SCS stops the spellcasters from trying.
Kagain is not proficient with axes, so he's stuck at 1 apr with it, unless hasted. Bala's Axe makes axes a hot candidate for his last profiency point at level 9.
Same plan vs. Greater Doppelgangers down on four warders level, with the addition of an invisible blocker to funnel the attackers into single line and I also added an Absorption potion to help his AC (I suppose the doppelgangers are unarmed, and use blunt damage). The invisible blocker only needs fear protection since she can't be hit and can't be targetted by Dire Charm.

Next up, Jaheira's complicated and interesting 'Druid politics' quest in Cloakwood. Extra interesting as I'm a Druid myself.
But Aldeth Sashenstar didn't want to talk to us. Huh? I had made sure not to talk to him or any of the druids when I was here last time. I looked this up on web forums. Ah, as the game is written, it looks like I can't do this quest in Chapter 5. That's ridiculous, the whole of Jaheira's druids quest has very little to do with the mines!
This won't do. That means it's cheating time. I solved it by temporarily setting the game to Chapter 4 and create a "new" (not yet spoken to) Aldeth. I see this as a bugfix.
We fought Izefia and his cronies. I did not know they are shapeshifters. Kagain always went for Nymphs if they got summoned. They are so frail, but you better not leave them alone to cast their spells:

Both Skie and Eldoth got Charmed, but for some reason they didn't move at all.
Takyiah was much the same, but that pack turned into bears instead. Laskal was nowhere to be found, I dunno why.
Kagain used an Invulnerability potion for the treehouse fight. That actually made his AC worse, but Girdle of Bluntness was still functioning, so both the druids and all those animals needed criticals to hit him. With the save bonus from the potion, Kagain had a save vs. spells of 1, even when he was Doomed! Had to suffer some bug bites, though. Still going for the Nymphs first:

The fight with the Druids around Beador got crazier than I had planned. Start was pretty good:

Imoen ate a Call Lightning, survived, drank an extra healer, didn't survive the next strike:

She was at full life, but that's only 35, and she was Doomed...
Both Martha and Skie were hit by Insect Plague, so Martha stopped casting spells. That didn't mean she was useless - she still had her Dagger of Venom:

Kagain also got bug-bitten. Just when I was getting a solid upper hand, a new player entered the fray:

Insect Plague is toned down in my setup. You get a round-based save vs. breath chance to avoid the damage that round, but spellcasting is still very hard and there's still a risk to get scared. This happened to Skie. Jaheira, while being pretty useless for most of the fight (she's so much lower level than the rest of us), calmed her down with a Remove Fear. It hit Martha as well, and may well have helped her too.
As for the Hamadryd, she cast Hold Person towards Jaheira (who drank Freedom potion before getting hit by it), got Eldoth over to her side and spread some Entangle mess. Then Kagain shut her up:

Went back to FAI to resurrect Imoen (see, I'm learning!).
Andarthe fight, and summoned animals on both sides:

Some wolves and a nymph dropped from an Emotion from Imoen; both druids saved, unfortunately.
I had a brain fart on the spider map. Used Pixie Dust to hide us all, then I had Kagain go to town on the spiders. His save vs. poison is 1, so he can't be poisoned. But I forgot that he can be webbed! Just because he took down the first 3-pack of Giant Spiders, that doesn't mean he will succeed with the next...sigh.
Okay, how do we handle this? My gang of four invisible people took up positions just outside their range. Imoen Fireballed the spiders, Martha drank a Freedom potion and tanked them succesfully. Now for the next big mistake: as I was fighting a suddenly appearing Phase Spider, I happened to move Skie too close to another Giant Spider pack. As I already had an enemy in sight, I didn't get the auto-pause warning. Skie eventually failed her stealth, and the spiders webbed her and killed her. They even invited the Sword Spider that was outside view, quickening the kill.
My remaining trio defeated them, but I left the lair for later. Time to return and lick our wounds, and sponsor Gellana's temple again...
Waylaid by Ettercaps! No problem, just let the damn MAGE tank two of them!

Spider lair itself was pretty easy. I took the fight outside, on a Skie-trapped spot with three spirit animals.
(Oh yeah, Martha is now level 11, which gives another spirit animal. It also opens up the 6th level spells. I promise I will use the Fire Elemental very sparingly and instead experiment more with the less-used spells. With so many awesome 5th-level spells (Pixie Dust! Iron Skins! Insect Plague. Chaotic Commands!), Wondrous Recall is actually a very viable option.)
On one of our Cloakwood travels, we were ambushed by Giant Spiders. For the first time for quite a while, this was actually a real threat to Martha. As you probably have noticed, I prefer to play my campaigns very thoroughly, which also means I get less and less thrilled by (or prone to) risking the life of the main character the more I progress. That's why I have my NPCs take almost all the risks (and hence they die now and then - I am generally not a good enough player to avoid this, alas). But here, it was genuin concern.
Kagain switched to Spider's Bane. That was a no-brainer. Hmm, if the rest of us can't be found, he'll probably win this easily. Martha decided to cast Pixie Dust. That has a pretty long casting time, so for extra insurance, I had Imoen cast Invisibility on Martha.
Eldoth got webbed, held and poisoned, but that was it. The rest of us were saved:

Kagain occupies all spiders. They can't hit him on regular hits, but he's unproficient so only 1 apr with Spider's Bane.
Eldoth got more and more hurt by the poison. Martha decided to cast Neutralize Poison on him. But he's invisible and can't be targetted! Okay...
Martha cast Dispel Magic and Imoen cast Glitterdust, both near him. Neither helped. Maybe Invisibility Purge would have been better? Eldoth was lucky here, though. The web and the poison timed out at the same time, with him still alive. Barely.
Kagain, the spiders' bane:

He took out the Giant Spiders first, then the rest of us could assist from range. Also, can you explain this? One of the Ettercaps poisoned him, How is that even possible?

Doesn't save vs. poison=1 mean he needs to roll at least 1 on a d20? How can one fail at that? Is there such a thing as 'critical failed save'? Do Ettercap poison attempts carry a save penalty? Or are we looking at something in the vein of Diablo II's LCS (Lying Character Screen, meaning that what you see isn't always what you get)?

There's no save penalty vs ettercap posion. save at 1 means that at a roll of 1 (or lower, which is impossible od 1d20 dice) you'll fail the save, not the minimal roll required.

Hey, that is exactly the same portrait that I chose for my cleric/illusionist.
Mine was Chaotic Neutral and slightly higher stats, but she sadly died. In my set-up I must learn to avoid Droth. I fought that battle four times to see if there was anything that I could improve upon. There wasn't. ![]()
I might run her again though, leaving Droth till the party is more powerful..
I then rolled a powerful cleric/ranger. Died getting Joia's ring!!!
I may run her again too.
PEE-scs30-08,
Who is the daddy;
We bring the rain against the iron throne hq then run the maze and stop my half brother from killing the city leaders.

My standard ‘clouldkill’ opening then I pop SoO while the adds absorbed his charge, Skie peppers him with dispel arrows but then Tazok arrived so Dorn charged into the melee… I was pleasantly surprised to see him kick the Bhaal out of Sarevok!
Congratulation ![]()

What did he do to win the fight? What was the main threat?
Also, ouch! for your C/R getting pwned by hobgoblins.

My Cleric/illusionist is VERY similar to Borco's. I hope that the indiscretions of my character will not have a negative effect on his, due to mis-identification.
Mine is Chaotic Neutral, and as the script says in Candlekeep after she is caught stealing, "I've been a bad, bad girl."
Str 18, Dex 18, Con 18, Int 10, Wis 17, Cha 15.
Due to her high charisma she is bedded by both the new guard at the inn who whips her for stealing, and then beds her and then Hull who is a bit more gentle. (Romantic Encounters. Though not very romantic, more erotic IMO.)
Due to her spells she has little in the way of problems with the assassins. A mod has given them the ability to poison their weapons, and this can be deadly. In addition a self-made mod of mine, (Non-weidu) has equipped one with a sword +2 and one with daggers +2 which deal extra damage. Just as well Caerwin was not struck! In addition she also killed Erik and Jondalar by accident. Erik had a bow but no arrows. Jondalar was unarmed. On the bodies of the assassins, Caerwin found a useful cloak, staff and pair of bracers.
She headed for the FAI and found two rings on the way. She cast sanctuary upon meeting Tarnesh and once his mirror image was dealt with by the guards, Caerwin cast "Command" and then proceeded to kill Tarnesh. ![]()
Since it was obvious that her enemies knew all about Gorion's plans, she headed soth to Beregost where she calmed down Marl before heading for Nashkel. There she gained additional healing ability, a charisma raising ring as well as experience. However she has not levelled up yet.
On the way, sleep was used against two ogrillon.
One error was having a full inventory when talking to Mirianne and not getting a +1 ring as a result.
Won't this result in the ring getting dropped to the ground?
Won't this result in the ring getting dropped to the ground?
It might. Something will definitely get dropped, but if you don't notice it, it might have disappeared when you get back.
If you have a full directory when speaking to Brage, that is more of a problem as the dropped article will almost certainly have disappeared before you get back. (Depending on your set-up of course) If you take your time getting back to where Gorion is killed, you can lose items there as well. ![]()
The story of Caerwin
In the vicinity of Nashkel, after reducing both her own and Bardolan’s stress in a time-honoured fashion, she spoke to Noober and Oublek.
To her amazement Oublek thinks she is noble and honest. Caerwin thinks differently and wishes that she were a bit more honest.
Near Nashkel she picked up a ring of protection from fire and a little later was asked to take Samuel to the Friendly Arms Inn, which she did.
She then headed eastward where she helped both the archaeologist and Brage thus fulfilling her ambition to become a heroine. True she recognises that she is a heroine with feet of clay, but she is nonetheless, a heroine.
She then helped Rufie Drienne and a Dryad before returning to Nashkel for a rest, a quick trip to Durlag's for a wand of fire, and a trip north of the carnival where she saved a cow from the xvarts with the help of a sleep spell. Reputation now 19.
She then took on some Flind the leader of which used to have a two-handed sword +1. She ran from some over-powerful bandits and helped Prism finish his masterpiece. She then collected the reward from Oublek.
Won't this result in the ring getting dropped to the ground?
It depends on the way the switch is made. There are a number of occasions in BG 1&2 where if you have to give up something to get something else, but your inventory is full, you will get the original item dropped to the ground not the replacement. In this case that was Mirianne's scroll; another similar mechanic that comes to mind is if you try and obtain Lilarcor with a full inventory - there's a number of runs where I've ended up with a withered hand instead
.

Next time a party will be required perhaps. Or perhaps web would be sufficient. She was cleric level 4, illusionist level 4.
I tried afresh run of the same cleric/illusionist this morning.
She didn't get out of Candlekeep.
Clearly those improvements I have made to the assassins have worked.
One blow from Mendas was all it took.
At least the changes that I have made have made Candlekeep worth playing. ![]()
First of all, thanks to USS Norway for her Moonblade which she made available to us. That Moonblade was assigned to the assassin Mendas in Candlekeep. Presumably he was the one that had stolen it from the chest even though he couldn’t have used it himself.
The Chronicles of the Moonblade
Being brought up in Candlekeep, I came across a very wide variety of personages, some of whom were decidedly strange. None came stranger than a seeress who visited when I was about twelve years of age. She carried with her in protective wrapping an object which had every appearance of being a sword.
I had heard many prophecies in the great hall, but none had affected me like the one she gave that eve.
“They call you Trouble for that is who you are. You will be Trouble for many, both Evil and Good. Yet you will also bring peace to many. This blade is for you. You will try and try again to acquire it, but it will be beyond your reach until the day that you need it. On that day it will fall into your hands and you will possess it and it shall possess you.”
She then let it fall from the wrappings into a chest and proceeded to lock it. I felt as if the seeress were talking directly to me, yet she gave no indication that she were doing so. True people did call me trouble, saying such things as, “What has Trouble been up to today then?” However, I was also well aware that other children were similarly addressed and so thought little of it.
Like many other children, I attempted to open that chest, but I was unable to do so.
Many years passed after that day, but the day that Gorion took me from Candlekeep brought everything clearly back to my memory.
Gorion told me to equip myself, but didn’t even give me sufficient gold to buy splint mail. I therefore opened a chest at the inn and found not only some gold, but also a potion of clarity. I went to the innkeeper and bought the splint mail, a helmet, some arrows and some crossbow bolts before going back upstairs.
I tried another chest and saw in it some more gold and a ring. However I took nothing as a shout told me that I had been spotted. The guard said that the fine for stealing would be all of my gold. I only had one gold piece and so gave it to him. Whether he put it in the treasury or kept it for himself I have no idea.
I knew that if nothing else, I needed enough gold to equip myself with swords and so I opened another chest. I had taken a necklace and a pearl when once again I was caught. Clearly I am not cut out to be a thief.
This guard demanded that I should allow myself to be whipped. Knowing full well that I deserved it I allowed him to severely beat me. What he did then is best passed over, but he certainly took full advantage of his position. The fact that I found it pleasurable does not mean that what he did was right!
I sold the gems and bought a couple of swords before performing a variety of chores all of which were poorly paid. In a very short space of time I was attacked by assassins again and again. Having stripped them of all that could be of use, I found that I had acquired a robe, a pair of bracers and a long sword +1. I put my previous equipment in a bag and donned the new before discovering that one of the assassins had stolen the blade from the chest.
Even after all that time I recognised it immediately. It was a Moonblade, the Moonblade that the seer had put in the chest when I was twelve. Remembering her words I took it and her words were fulfilled. I took possession of it, and it took possession of me.
There were a few items in the thieves’ possession that I stored in a bag. I gave all my gold to the temple gaining two reputation points, and helping Linda and Sir Trun raised my reputation yet further.
As you have probably already heard from other sources, Gorion was killed protecting me. I arranged for his burial before following his instructions by heading for the Friendly Arms Inn.
There I fought against another assassin called Tarnesh who was a mage. I managed to cast “Sleep” before he cast anything that affected me with the result that I was able to kill him easily.
Inside another adventurer called Quentin helped relieve me of the stress of the day.
“Sleep” proved to be effective against some hobgoblins in the same area. I then headed northwards and managed to resolve the conflict between a widow and a zombie husband and between the fishermen and Tenya, a priestess of Umberlee.
I was also able to kill a nearby Ankheg using the sleep spell.
Thinking about it afterwards, I realised that the prophecy was already come to pass. The blade had come into my possession when I wasn’t looking for it. I had certainly brought trouble to those who were evil, and “You will also bring peace to many,” had also come to pass in measure. I suppose that indirectly the death of Gorion was a fulfilment of that same prophecy.
I then headed southwards towards Nashkel, helping Marl to come to terms with his son’s death and taking a tome to Firebead.
Just south of there, I killed two Ogrillon after putting one of them to sleep.
In Nashkel I found some Ankheg armour, spoke to Noober and once more relieved my stress, this time in the arms of Bardolan.
Lord Foreshadow gave me a useful ring which makes a big difference to my charisma.
I was able to help Mellicamp and that led to us having an enjoyable picnic together followed by some chaste kissing.
I then helped the archaeologist and Brage followed by doing some babysitting in Nashkel. I have now reached my goal of becoming a hero.
Kazi, Cleric/Illusionist, 3rd entry:
"It is a warm sunny day and Kazi is back in Beregost. She's watching the man in a pointy hat trail away after exchanging couple of words with her; and there was something more than a sterile courtesy. Who would have thought that their actions attract such attention..."
I considered the party complete until I've realized that I never gave Xan much chance to prove himself...Welcome on board then, doomsayer!
With the "delayed assassins" modification installed, the area outside of the mines is mostly limited to tombs' looting and Narcillius Harwilliger Neen. For the time being, Kazi and her group did not seem resourceful enough to challenge the mage and his jellies and therefore limited themselves to the tombs. The Revenant was taken down by Alora's fire arrows after being blinded by Kazi (whom, unlike late Jabbar, did not forget to use a Potion of Free Action).

Kazi was now level 3/3 (+ 2HP). Back at the carnival, they purchased the Shield Amulet for Xan (as his 12 HP was making him an excellent target for MMs) and acquired their first mage robe from Zordral.

Nimubl found himself too short for the paralyzing grasp of Tiax's ghast.

Alora would then return Joseph's ring to his mourning wife, which is something I honestly haven't done in ages.
The accumulated fortune was spent on various goods at High Hedge, including various potions and scrolls and - most importantly - the Claw of Kazgaroth for Kazi. With the new arsenal, our party was ready to meet Bassilus. He did not offer much resistance due to being silenced, web-held and stunned in a short sequence.

The area was completed by retrieving the magical short sword and rescuing Melicamp before proceeding to collect the bounty at the Temple of Lathander. Normally, I tend to avoid the wolf-pack (with Vampiric Wolves) residing east of the temple but this time if just felt right to step of out the comfort zone. I did not hurt that much; web spell and various sources of magical damage did get the job done.

The last part of the session was the basilisk "Zone". Therein, all the monsters, together with their master Mutamin, were wiped out clean by our undead helpers, i.e. Korax and Tiax's ghast, accompanied by invisible Kazi (note: in my install, your summons will not attack the basilisks unless they're in the light of sight of your characters).

The final battle with Kirian's party had its share of funny twists, one of which resulted in the first close call of the run. We did not underestimate the kick-off sequence and opened with a Stinking Cloud (scroll) that should create the maneuvering space for our two ghouls.

Kazi managed to pull off a successful Blind but, at the same time, that Sleep projectile was not a good omen.

The Sleep spell did land but so did Tiax's Silence and our team got the upper hand again.

Lindin escaped the poisonous gas and had to be dealt with.

With him being dead, Kirian running blind and Peter silenced and stunned, everything seemed to be under control.

Baerin came in as a surprise and picked sleeping Kazi as his target. Considering his damage output, the rest of the party had no more than two rounds to distract him. Xan released his only Charm Person spell which - to my surprise - worked. Although, Alora's arrow made Baerin go quickly hostile again, he was still forced to reconsider his targets...

Most likely a suicide mission, Xan proceeded to meet him in melee. With the help of an Invisibility Potion, he lasted long enough to give Alora and Tiax the necessary space to finish the job. Kirian was still out there and chasing her proved to be more complicated than expected.

Xan's last Sleep and Alora's Necklace of Missiles were each used to dispatch one pack of gnolls. And with Kazi back in the game the victory was inevitable.

We were rewarded with valuable loot and three level-ups, with Kazi being now level 4/4 (+ 2 HP). Having bought the Shadow Armor, Short Bow +1 and various magical ammunition for Alora from Thunderhammer's smithy, the party is now recovering in Beregost.
