I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I'm tempted to restart Alisa because I think she can pull this off and she is a personal fav, I'm also considering going back to Ao. If anyone has a preference, let me know.

Alisa has been interesting to read but if you haven't already decided, I'd love to see Ao continue.

Although my play time is limited currently, I couldn't resist making my next character. I'll just have to manage with slow progress & updates for now.

Introducing Beatrice.
Chaotic good, half-elf, cleric/ranger.
As before, another solo game.
Core difficulty but allowing max hps per level.
Playing with tutu, scs and a couple of cosmetic mods from the tweak packs.
Starting with one bag of holding to save inventory stress.

Well my previous character bit the dust. Been distracted with Heart of Winter then Trials of the Luremaster and part way through IWD2 which is just a slugfest at present.

I'm going to roll up a bard now and join this solo madness. Good luck everyone.

I haven't decided yet. I've been fiddling with my Archer, Alia (it's nice to play a character that can actually hit consistently without ~6 buffs for a change...). But since I doubt she'll be able to get Belt through the Duchal Palace Battle, I'm not really taking her seriously.

As for Alisa... Well, I kind of feel the same way I did about Alastria at this point. Now that I know something glitchy ended her, I feel she deserves a fair shot. I'm inclined to give it to her. We'll see though.

I'll definitely get back to Ao someday. There seems to be some interest in C/Ms.

Good luck with Beatrice! And I hope you enjoy SCS!

As long as I'm online, I should introduce Alia. I'm not viewing her as a serious candidate, but who knows: I may end up seeing her through and I mine as well have an entry post just in case. So, here she is.

Character Name: Alia
class: Archer
Race: Elf
Stats: Strength- 15; Dexterity-19; Constution-17; Intelligence-10; Wisdom-14; Charisma-15
Proficiencies: Long Bows(x2), Slings(x2), Darts, Short Sword

Personal Item: Scout's Honor (Amulet)- +1 Movement Rate, +15% Stealth, Casts Friends 1/Day

Character Description: Alia is one of my core characters- I've been playing her for years. She escorted my Sorceress, Alanis, through the BG1 and SoA portions of her successful Trilogy run and, on her own, had a heartbreaking so close-but-yet-so-far Trilogy run (Vorpaled in the Ascension Battle). I'd like to see her No Reload the Trilogy, but I have a semi-intense feeling that she won't make it solo- not with those nasty Doppelgangers in her way.

If I do decide to contine with her, I'll post pics.

Best,

A.

Good luck to Alia, and Beatrice. I was considering doing a serious cleric/ranger run myself but after getting offed by a wolf I decided it was too similar to what I had already gone through with a fighter/cleric. But best of luck, I really would like to see major "Calling Lightning" action. Hopefully I'll get to test some lightning bolt with my F/M.

BG/TotSC/patch/EasyTUTU/Generalised Biffing on Linux/Wine.

Nargle, NG human male unkitted bard taking the first roll with no amendment. Portrait is that of Garrick.

Str 13
Dex 15
Con 10
Int 14
Wis 10
Cha 15

* quarterstaff, * crossbow.

After being roughed up by an assassin Jondalar and Erik soften me up a good deal more. Eventually I scare them off and take my revenge on five rats before another assassin injures me further.

We are ambushed as we leave Candlekeep. Gorion dies as I flee, leaving a trail of blood. Fortunately Imoen tracks me down first only to me on my way with a wand and some potions.

I clear out some hobgoblins with my heavy crossbow, returning a flamedance ring to Joia. The Friendly Arm Inn beckons but I have heard it is a common ambush location so head south-south-west instead.

Three ghouls try to ambush me but I keep my distance and eventually fill them with bolts. For some this is an ambush, for me an opportunity.

I make peace with Marl and buy Firebead Elvenhair a book before agreeing to help Garrick. He tells me his employer is a mean vile woman with little patience and no mercy. Perhaps I won't say hello just yet.

I practice my aim on a couple of ogrillions, two hordes of gibberlings and a belted ogre. Then I buy two scrolls of protection from petrification from Thalantyr (first memorisation failed) and head east.

A single gnoll and two lesser basilisks are killed in sight of Shar Teel. All the time she swings her swords aimlessly and laughs at my poor aim. One day I may return to further her education, but not today.

(bard level 4, 8102xp).

It seems boredom has been killing more of my characters than bandits or assassins. I'm going to have another bash at this.

Enter Elvriia, Chaotic Good Elven Fighter/Mage
Stats: Str 18/37, Dex 19, Con 16, Int 15, Wis 7, Cha 15
Proficiencies: Large Sword ++, Missile Weapons ++

The final roll turned out to be better than hoped for, so I could have taken another point of Con and/or a couple more in Int, both of which could have been useful in a no-reload, and I could have kept my Wis up to avoid a lore penalty. However, I decided to try and add a bit more depth to this character by giving her a poor score and a slightly more rp-oriented (rather than powergaming) stat set. Turns out she's tough, smart and good-looking, but foolish and willful. Hopefully her impulsiveness won't leave her dead in the woods somewhere...

Went for focus in Large Swords, because they're just the best weapons in the game, and Missile Weapons, because though bows are cool, this way I can use a Sling or Dart with a shield (which will be valueable to an F/M) whilst still keeping an option on crossbows (which I've never really used before) in the future.

Mod setup is the same as last time (too lazy to repost).

Again, I'm going to try the start of this one as a solo (or possibly a duo) but probably pick up some help later on. I might try and get through chapters 2 and 3 myself this time, though.

Alia has arrived in Baldur's Gate. I still haven't the slightest idea how she's going to get Belt through the Duchal Palace battle, but it looks like I'm going to see her game through. Here is her current character record.
Posted Image

I'll post on some of her more interesting early batttles relatively soon.

Best,

A.

Btw. The batting order is going to be Alia, Alisa, Ao, and then Alesia.

Alia at the Bandit Camp

I suppose I'll post on the Bandit Camp fight. This was the battle that got me interested in Alia's game. Up untill this point, I was just fooling around with her and enjoying the break from pre-buffing. But the second bandit Camp battle ended up being a really fun bow fight. I'm definitely enjoying her game now.

First, her key items and proficiencies.

Studded Leather +2
Ankeg Plate
Cloak of Displacement
Girdle of Piercing
Boots of Avoidance
Long Bow (Bow of Marksmanship)
Bracer's of Archery
Scout's Honor (Personal Item)
Ring of Invisibility
Greenstone Amulet
Wand of Sleep
Potions

Proficiencies: Long Bow (x2), Sling(x2), Dart, Short Sword

Alia compled the Bandit Camp in two stages. First, she took down the leaders. Then, she fought the crowd outside. Once again, an SCS Assasin team made the second battle more interesting.

The tent battle began with Alia invisible. The Greenstone Amulet was activate. She positioned herself behind Venkt in Dart tossing range. She opened with a Dart of Stunning on Venkt- hoping to take his spells out of the action.
Posted Image

Success. Venkt was Stunned.
Posted Image

Alia tried to finish off Venkt quickly. However, his Mirror Image "Contingencies" allowed him to last a bit longer then Alia would have liked. Feeling impatient, Alia used a Potion of Explosion to finish him (NW: Alia couldn't afford to bring the Necklace of MIssles with her).
Posted Image

With Venkt out of the action, the battle became pretty straightforward. As usual, Britik was irrelevant (He could really use an Oil of Speed...). The bowman were the only concern. But with Alis'a Missle Weapon protection items, they weren't worrisome either. Victory was assured. Aside from positioning, her only other tactical move was to Stun Hakt to get his Poison out of play. Once he fell, Alia could take down the slow footed Gnoll at her leisure.
Posted Image

Ok. That battle was basically just the warmup: the battle outside the tent was more fun.

Alia exited the tent and was immediately accosted by SCS Assasins. She opened with a Arrow of Bitting on the Cleric, Drakar in the interest of removing his Hold Person spells from play. This worked.
Posted Image

While Drakar had been neutralized, a Hasted Taugosz and his bandits were closing in. They made quick progress and forced Alia to use one of her Oils of Speed.
Posted Image

As soon as her Oil of Speed kicked in, Alia decided to dart away and heal. Then, she circled around the perimeter and sniped the principles while evading the arrows of the fodder. This stage of the battle was fun.
Posted Image
Posted Image

With the principles gone, it was time to tackle the fodder. The mass of foes looked intimidating.
Posted Image

But a Wand of Sleep charge later, and it looked like nap time at Peldvale Nursery Shool.
Posted Image

And that's more-or-less how it ended.

Comments

That was an enjoyable fight, the kind Archers are perfect for: running, snipping, and then exchanging a hail of arrows with a mass of foes. Good fun.

Best,

A.

I see there has been a continuing rash of bards on this thread.  Well, if you can't beat them then join them!  Only difference with Exhorta is that she is a bladesinger rather than a pure bard - I haven't used this kit before, but it looks quite powerful.
Posted Image
Her stats were first roll generated.  They are not quite as lucky as they initially appear as bladesingers have quite high minimum requirements (13 strength & constitution, 15 dexterity & intelligence in addition to the elven requirements).  However, the 18 strength is still a substantial bonus for a random roll.  I've made her lawful evil in order to try and see if I can experiment a bit further with an imp familiar.  Looking at her stats I'm not sure why she has 8 HP.  The kit description doesn't say there are any bonuses to HPs, but the only thing I can think of is that the character is using D8 rather than the normal D6 for bards.
{Edit: checked in Shadowkeeper and the additional 2 HP are added as an effect, i.e. the basic die roll is D6 - not sure if this is intentional and just not documented or an implementation bug}

I've rehashed my mod setup to be pretty much in line with my previous full setup, but excluding all the main additional areas.  That should prevent the temptation to use unbalancing mod equipment.  WeiDU log as follows:

Actually, Elvriia got off to a bad start - a run-in with a wolf causing her to drink her only healing potion. On the upside, she calmed down Marl, took Algernon's cloak (um, from his corpse...) and killed the belt Ogre with Blindness and Darts.

I have to say, it's nice to have a character with <20 THAC0 and a few HP after last time, and her 19 Dex and Large Shield give her an OK AC even without armour on - much better than a standard mage, anyway. I'm thinking that for the first few levels I will have to use prebuff-and-engage-armoured tactics, since her spells won't be very powerful anyway. This will make her essentially a buffed fighter. Later, she'll probably shift focus to caster, but have a lot more health and be capable of meaningful attacks between spells. Right now, though, Sleep is her only spell, and she needs it, so I fancy it's probably more valueable than the few AC points she's getting from her Studded Leather Armour.

Nargle, NG human male unkitted bard with face of Garrick.

I had a strange dream after being bitten by a dread wolf, and discovered I could heal minor injuries. Good job too as I got hit by an arrow in a kobold ambush. Two more dread wolves chase me and a third wolf ignores a nearby chicken and takes a good bite out of me. After resting up I return to kill the wolf, to find the chicken can talk. I agree to help it but have to run from skeletons several times before giving up on getting a skull.

Half-ogres ambush me and after missing them a lot I give up there too. This is tough.

A rope bridge is not an ideal place to play tag with Gnarl but an armour spell allows me to run past him several times, and my crossbow finishes him off. Hairtooth manages to hit me once so I try out my minor healing and kill him with my next shot.

(The unidentified gauntlets reduce armour class from 4 to 1 & THAC0 from 19 to 17)

I found Captain Brage and helped him back to Nashkel. Spoke to Volo while waiting for supper, he suggests I should learn more than three spells (armour, protection from petrification, knock).

Talk is so cheap - you won't feel so confident after feeling the weight of a heavy lyre on your headPosted Image.

Exhorta followed normal route for my new characters - straight off to Beregost and then picking up XP in areas without any travel time in order to avoid any ambushes.  That got her up to level 4 before going to High Hedge to buy invisibility.  With more freedom to travel collected ring of wizardry from the Friendly Arm and used the proceeds of sale to fund further spells.  Worked down to Nashkel and picked up a nice sword from Greywolf.

Now at level 6.  Her imp has been employed quite a bit in distracting enemies and sometimes polymorphed (usually into spider).  Used bard song a bit, but haven't yet tried out the special disarm and parry tactics available to bladesingers.

The only slightly risky battle for Exhorta so far was against Zordral, who the imp found very difficult to hit with his ghost armour up (while flitting between spider and jelly forms) and Exhorta joined in the attack (which I hadn't originally planned for); in the event Zordral failed to get a spell off.  Next step I think is to head for Ulgoth's Beard.

I was carrying on with Merrus the Druid, but after thrashing the hell out of Davaeorn, Minsc AND Dynaheir got chunked by Ankhegs

Since there have been a few deaths to Ankhegs of late, I thought I'd mention that Protection from Acid scrolls can be helpful when hunting them. And if you intend to fight in Melee Girdle of Bluntness + Potion of Absorption should get them into the critical-hit-only range. Of course, at a distance, they're vulnerable to the standard Boots of Avoidance + Cloak of Displacement + Girdle of Piercing range-fighting setup.

Best,

A.

Nargle, NG human male unkitted bard. No SCS though.

Melicamp is guarding my belongings in Beregost (he's in the chest) while I take four huge spiders for a walk.

To Nashkel mine with some trepidation. I kill two kobolds and descend deeper. Three more kobolds are despatched but a fourth has wandered off. I see it, and kill it.

However, our missiles have crossed in flight and my luck is out.

Back in a bit, good luck everybody.

Alia v. Drasus and Co.(Or Why You Should Always Drink Before Work)

This was an important battle for Alia. As an Archer, speed is critical. The Boots of Speed are therefore a must have item. But with Alia out of Oils of Speed, it would be a dangerous fight: she'd be facing an enemy with the melee and movement rate advantage who also had mage support- that could get dicey. Fortunately for Alia, Drasus wields an easily foiled weapon: a Morningstar. And she had the potions to stop it.

The Plan

Buff with the Greenstone Amulet and a Potion of Heroism. Wear the Girdle of Bluntness. Keep a Potion of Frost Giant Strength and Potion of Aborption at the ready.  Approach invisible, open with an Arrow of Piercing on Kysus, and then finish the mages with either Arrows or the Necklace of Missles. If Drasus engages in Melee, drink the Potion of Frost Giant strength and the Potion of Absorption, equip the Short Sword and take him down. With the Potion of Aborption + Girdle of Bluntness foiling his attacks -Potions of Heroism and Frost Giant Strength buffing Alia's- he with fall. Once he's dead, pick up the prize, and snipe his comrades.

Execution

The battle went as expected- although the Potion bill ended up being higher then it should have been. Alia was irked by a Melf's Acid Arrow effect and decided to remove it with a Potion of Magic Blocking. This removed her Pre-Buffs as well and led her to double up on each.

Alia's opening Arrows of Biting struck Kysus. He made his save against the first few poison effects but eventually failed. Shutdown, he died soon after.

As Kysus fell, Rezdan hit Alia with a Melf's Acid Arrows. Counter: Potion of Magic Blocking. (This was an expensive and arguably unnecessary move, but my characters don't like pain...Posted Image)

Alia's priority at this point was to end Rezdan while evading Drasus. This provded difficult due to Drasus's speed. Time to drink and go to work: Potion of Heroism, Potion of Frost Giant Strength, Potion of Absoprtion, then equip the blade.
Posted Image

With her Blunt Weapon AC frustrating Drasus, he made little progress. And since Alia didn't need to heal she could use her Aura to try to finish Rezdan.
Posted Image

Rezdan survived the Necklace blast, but for some inexplicable reason decided to wander up to Alia at Near Death. Hold on a second Drasus, I have something to take care of...
Posted Image

Back to Drasus.
Posted Image

Then, it was time for Genthore. But with her Bow, Boots, and Potion Buffs he was utterly helpless.

That was a potentially dangerous fight for Alia. But with the right potions, she escaped without taking much damage at all. Remember to drink before work.

Alia v. Davaeorn

Heading into this fight, I was slightly nervous. I have never faced Davaeorn with a solo Warrior and haven't soloed a Warrior in a very long time. Happily, Alia's defense-first approach led her to a solid plan. And while the Potion bill was characteristically high, it was a safe and successful battle.

The Plan

Pre-Buff with a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, a Potion of Invulnerability, a Potion of Heroism, a Potion of Regeneration, a Potion of Cold Resistance, a Potion of Fire Resistance, a Protection from Fire scroll, a Potion of Insulation, and the Greenstone Amulet. Keep the Boots of the North, the Boots of Grounding and Spider's Bane at the ready- leaving Blindness, Acid, and Magic Damage as the only vulnerabilities. In the event of Blindness or a Dispel, drink a Potion of Magic Blocking, disappear, and rebuff. Stay away from the Battle Horrors at all times.

Eliminate the Battle Horrors first. Take them with Cold Arrows and opportunistic jabs with the Short Sword. Don't stay in melee range long enough to let them bring their swords down: stab and go. And if Davaeorn decides to cast Cone of Cold, get some help from him. Once the Horrors are gone, finish Davaeorn with the Short Sword.

Execution

As in Alia's earlier battles, everything went according to plan.

As usual, Davaeorn's first move was to fire off a Web+Stinking Cloud sequencer. Counter: Spider's Bane- with the Greenstone Amulet active.

With the first threat evaded -and Davaeorn having few options due to prebuffs- Alia equipped her Bow and started pecking away at the Battle Horrors with Cold Arrows. Their Missle Weapon damage immunity made it slow going, but the Cold Damage allowed her to make progress.

Alia was starting to get a bit impatient. Fortunately, Davaeorn decided to give her a hand by casting Cone of Cold. She slipped on her Boots of the North and thanked Davaeorn kindly for the assistance.
Posted Image

A quick Short Sword jab later, and the first Battle Horror had fallen.
Posted Image

Getting desperate, Davaeorn launched a Fireball, but to no avail. The writing is on the wall now...
Posted Image

Battle Horror 2 fell to Cold Arrows and a final jab.

Then is was Davaeorn's turn:

Quick Note on Alia's Game

I've been enjoying Alia's game. And I would like to see her finish successfully. However, I'm finding it hard to see how she'll be able to get Belt through the Duchal Palace battle on her own.

When my sorceress, Alanis, completed her Trilogy No Reload, she was escorted through BG1 and BGII-SOA by Alia. Alia was Alanis's bodyguard and protector throughout her early development. Alanis may not have made it without her.

Sadly, Alia didn't get to see the end of that adventure- she was Petrified while racing out of a Sphere of Chaos cast by Illasera's Black Reever Mage. Alanis, Aerie, Imoen, and Nalia were forced to carry on without her. She was missed.

And so it seems appropriate that when Alia arrived in Baldur's Gate, she met an intelligent, wise, and fanciful young elven sorceress...

The two have not travelled together yet, but they have become fast friends. Alanis has agreed to assist Alia if she ever needs help.

Alia will head off to Candlekeep shortly. Alanis will remain in the Elfsong.

A.

I seem to remember in one of your earlier posts you talked about dragging dopplegangers upstairs, outside etc.  Won't the same tactics work for Alia?  Anyway I'm sure you'll manage something.

You should probably uninstall whatever upgrades SCS gives to doppelgangers so Alia can spam wand of sleep to get past the Ducal Palace. Just a suggestion  though.

That was Alastria's game. The Doppelgangers weren't dragged upstairs and outside: they were running scared.

Alastria loaded up the Conventional Hall with Teleport Fields. She then hit them with Remove Magic to Dispel their Haste and Mirror Images, and killed them using cast-and-attack tactics with the Wand of Frost and Melf's Minute Meteors while they swirled around. It worked well- at first that is. Then Belt and the Flaming Fist got Confused.

Confused, Belt and the Flaming Fist started beating on each other. And while Alastria was fine, I got a little panicky. Belt went near the door, a scared Doppelganger ran out, and then the battle log read: "Greater Doppelganger- Attacks Bill". I was kind of feaked out as I said and perceived Bill as Belt. I thought: "Freak! The Doppelganger is attacking Belt from the outside somehow! Get out there!"

Right. Well, Alastria rushed out side -without activating the Greenstone Amulet- and got back-slapped into Confusion almost immediately. She finished the Doppelganger fortunately, but then she started hurling Meteors at the Flaming Fist. That's when all hell broke loose. Everyone outside went Hostile, the Nobles started running into the Palace Hall and Belt began chunking them one by one (not sure how that going to effect his re-election campaign...) Of course, the Flaming Fist was attacking Confused Alastria at the same time. The Tweedles had to fight them off. It was total mayhem.

Anyhoo. While that battle was a mess, I'm confident in the general tactical approach. Alanis's standard spellbook includes Remove Magic and Teleport Field so she's well positioned to help. That's why I created a joinable NPC mod of her. Alanis's Teleport Fields, Remove Magic and Glitterdust would also be perfect for the Slythe fight.

In any event the two of them are talking it over at the Elfsong right now. I still haven't decided but I'm pretty certain that Alia's chances would be much better with Alanis by her side. And given the history between the two characters, it feels like a fun thing to do. We'll see. it would be nice to get Alia through solo. But I'd rather have her get help then die.

A.

@Alesia_BH : nice battles. I like the way you write it, with explanations, screenshots, ...
If only I was ready to start my character... :)

Saving Belt and Liia might prove to be difficult with a solo character.
I was always ashamed that Liia and Belt don't really fight. They are both high level (11) and should use their abilities.
This is something I will definitly include in my mod; there is no way that level 11 mage and fighter would die to a few greater doppleganger without fighting back !

Quick Note on Alia's Game:

Ok. I'm going to let Alia try it alone: I have a plan. I'm not certain it will work, but I think I can give her a fighting chance. We'll see how it goes...
