The goblin toll is demanded with menace but Blaggerd is in no mood to pay. Strangely enough, it is a negotiable toll and rapidly waived before blood is shed.

After two traps are sprung Blaggerd sighs and allows Garla to check carefully ahead. No more traps of course, but something that can be negotiated with. These end with it deciding to tear Blaggerd's arms off but it dies before that can be managed. The group of hidden crusaders can only watch, and die. Looting through the corpses reveals an item that should allow subterfuge to work in future, if Blaggerd can be bothered to use it instead of his weapons.

There's a large wooden gate ahead, and no doubt more defenders are grouped the other side of it. Blaggerd staunches his wounds and readies himself.

Everyone in the Coalition Camp wants help with something, so Blaggerd waves at the idle NPC's and suggests they can do the drudge work while he and his horde do something that interests them instead,

A shortcut across the Bloodbark Grove turns sour, with Blaggerd stunned by beetles despite his Spiders Bane sword. The horde rally round and Blaggerd keeps 48 of his 95 hit points to fight another day. Or another minute as more beetles arrive with their shambling mound companion. Slayer takes point for a change and Blaggerd aims his crossbow, realising afterwards that he's thrown the normal bolts away and is shooting bolts of biting instead. The beetles can't stand the poison, meaning Blaggerd can switch back to melee for the shambler. Once it falls, Blaggerd allows a brief pause so Slayer can unentangle himself.

Is this seige of Dragonspear you are playing, or a mod?

It's Siege of Dragonspear Wise.

This was going to be 10 quick minutes but ended up running for over an hour.

Much to everyone's surprise, Blaggerd blags his way inside. After killing everyone outside, naturally. He meant to do the same inside but the sarcasm of his answer went over the lowly head of that challenger who fell for the implausible explanation. Don't give Blaggerd an inch, otherwise he'll make you wish you handn't.

Inside, everything goes to plan with more smoothtalking getting the horde to their destination. On the way out though, Blaggerd remembers the other item in his backpack and heads to a structural weakness. This is enough for the enemy to gather their thoughts and attack. Blaggerd and co are hard-pressed and use all their healing potions (20ish), all 11 extra healing potions, 2 elixirs purely for healing and finally break out 3 oils of speed to clear the last hurdle.

Oondul had fallen early on, with Slayer getting baulked and surrounded he too fell. Mhoa had been blinded at some point and was valiantly blocking until she also fell. A bit of a mess, to be told, and breaking out potion buffs earlier would have been a sensible plan. Still, Blaggerd is still breathing. Painfully...

With his horde raised, Blaggerd is tasked with organising the defences against a crusade sortie. If only he'd sought out allies there would be more assistance to choose from. The first wave of attackers injure him but the second is lighter and the third are clearly lightweights. A final push forces the remaining enemies back, but Oondul once more collapses to the ground.

A counter-attack is needed, and Blaggerd drags the corpse of the dead Skald along, hoping to find a friendly cleric. His luck is in, although it is probably lining the bard up for another death.

The fop with a de between his names asks Blaggerd about the shh war crimes and Blaggerd sighs - does the fool need to talk more about it.

As the forces surge forward Blaggerd orders the horde to buff (haste, chant - fluffed with a never-ending cast, and Blaggerd adds DUHM). A long and gruelling battle lies ahead but Blaggerd makes to cut off the head of the snake instead. Blaggerd is in danger of being out-thought but no danger of being out-fought. He's got the upper hand and only stoneskins are fending off crashingly huge attacks. A full set of blackguard poison is used before mirror images and sanctuary foil a second application. With his foe effectively hidden and healing, Blaggerd heals his wounds twice then uses a clasp he found some time back to detect illusion.

Whether the detection worked, or the enemy finished buffing is unclear. What is clear is that Blaggerd saves against Command and finally the stoneskins are torn asunder. Hit for 25, hit for 24. "No! I stand in the light! I cannot be defeated!". Hit for 24 - defeated.

With the chapter henchman (and mastermind of the defences) down, all that is left for Blaggerd to do is loot the corpse and swagger across the courtyard to the inner gate as the crusaders retreat inside the castle itself. Bloke with de in his name is whining about a group of mercenaries to the north of the area but Blaggerd has no fear of them or need to waste time on such a diversion.

Caelar Argent is standing over the inner gate, imploring the attackers to join her, then leaving. The horde suspect she's a bit un-hinged, which is about what happens to the inner gate. Blaggerd may still be wounded but he's racing over the castle roof towards the interior. Once inside though, he catches 40 winks and is fully refreshed. Garla has checked for traps and hands Blaggerd a treasury note and some loose change... :)

Another confrontation with Caelar Argent takes an unexpected turn and Blaggerd has to chase after her. She gets enough of a head start to make a break, and Blaggerd is slowed when first Klaer then Mhoa are charmed. By the time they recover the blackguard has a lot of ground to make up.

Another rest, and Oondul casts Spirit Armor onto Klaer. That's what arcane casters and kensais are made for...

Blaggerd catches up with Caelar but her shining lightness uses the distraction of a cutscene to slam the largest door he's ever seen in his face. Before Blaggerd can open it, another distraction appears and calls up some friends. It could all be relatively friendly but Blaggerd and Klaer have already sunk sword and staff deep into the flesh of the initial attacker and moments later they finish the job. The remaining attackers are soon beaten down.

Mahvelus. Only, the horde throw all the junk they can at Blaggerd. 544lb and encumbered, but still charmed or dominated and chasing after the party. Mhoa summons a sacrificial skeleton and the horde move away to wait for Blaggerd to recover his senses.

A bit further in, and Klaer is making decent inroads against a particularly troublesome adversary while Blaggerd is regretting not having a suitable weapon. He stabs away with a shortsword but after a few minutes battle Slayer has fallen. Mhoa and Oondul are running scared while the diminutive swashbuckler is helping as best she can with her shortsword. Klaer could probably keep the effort up all day long but Blaggerd fails to save against a hold and two hits later he is down.

Got caught up in the game and didn't plan that bit properly :(

Corthief IX the dwarven thief - update 5

Traveling with: Ajantis, Kivan, Minsc, Branwen, Dynaheir

Summary:

The party is rapidly running out of Chapter 3 areas to clear, although there's still at least half a dozen. They've done tougher bits like enemy parties, ankhegs, sirines and basilisks.

For the parties outside, simple skeletons as forward distractions, while party does silence/ranged fire is plenty devastating. For Firewine Bridge, we enter from Gullykin and have a buffed fighter (Ajantis) take out Lendarn (well OK Lendarn took out himself - he really should be more careful with those lightning bolts) - once he went down, rest could be cleared safely by the party. For Tazok's Tent, ranged fire and one round of magic missiles was just enough to interrupt his mirror image spell - which meant he fell quickly. His cohorts couldn't do much once Venkt fell. It was actually much harder outside, Kivan and Ajantis were gulping blue potions like they were going out of style, but the party prevailed nevertheless.

Since Minsc's AC is pretty so-so, decided it would less resource intensive to just have him use a composite long bow +1 - this is working out excellent. We haven't died to undead since adopting this setup. Minsc will eventually use a magical two hand sword, but we have to wait until Ajantis gets the Spider's Bane.

Pictures from the adventure:

Spoiler

Party is approximately level 6. We finally splurged for the robe of the good arch magi - Dynaheir appreciates the extra protection. She managed to flub all 4 invisibility scrolls from Thalantyr, even when using a genius potion almost each time. We will have to try at Sorcerous Sundries, assuming they have that spell.

Corthief IX the dwarven thief - Update 6

Traveling with: Kagain, Kivan, Minsc, Branwen, Dynaheir

Because we need the experience, we weather all ambushes in the Cloakwood. This mostly worked well, except once I forgot to put myself in the line formation and Dynaheir died. The Cloakwood areas were pretty straightfoward. With Drassus group, we did the pretty standard for our party, skeleton distractions/ranged fire and once again this carries the day.

Baldr548_zpspudlwhnh.png

Since we needed the experience, we battled the battle horrors by Davaeorn. But Kivan made a mistake and pulled both at once! Uh, oh. It was hard, and Minsc took a massive pounding but we beat those horrors without any deaths.

Baldr549_zps6tbqqiht.png

For Davaeorn, Kivan was supposed to solo him with a protection from magic scroll. Kivan beat Davaoern easily. I had tucked the party in the side room, thinking they would be safe - but Davaeorn was brilliantly, expertly firing a lightning bolt off two walls and smashing the party, killing Ajantis too! Looting was a big problem.

Baldr551_zpsvqzgm8ur.png

Then I remembered what happened last run - my party buffs got dispelled, then the fighter/druids who were half-elves were easy pickings as they all failed their save vs. chaos. I then thought about my party - not counting Corthief IX, it was 4 humans and an elf! I need someone with better saves. So dropped Ajantis and recruited Kagain instead.

All Chapter 4 areas cleared (except TotSC) - we will now venture into the great City of Baldur's Gate.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 100 - (4th and final update)

Robin, elf archer (Grond0) & Treacletoes, dwarven defender (Gate70)

There was to be no glory for our 100th pairing as Sarevok claimed another victim at the palace.

Things started well in the city with no particular problems picking up a few bits of equipment.  At the Iron Throne Treacletoes used a potion of magic blocking to allow him to act as the focus for enemies while Robin picked off the casters with a stream of arrows.

At Candlekeep the tombs were robbed before another magic blocking potion and a ring of free action helped make short work of Prat's gang.

Treacletoes thought it was unlikely to be Slythe's day and the arrow of dispelling hitting him as he rushed after the dwarf made pretty sure of that.

To guard against the unlikely event of him dying, Treacletoes handed Slythe's invitation and letter to Robin - and to be tidy Robin put them into his scroll case.  That proved to be a mistake though as the game couldn't detect them there.  As a result Gate70 saw no option to discuss the letters with Duke Belt after killing the last of the dopplegangers.  To confirm it really was a bug we loaded the autosave and checked - on my screen the options were indeed correct, but not on his!

Spoiler

We're not given to reloading for bugs a lot, but decided that this did justify doing so and once more loaded the autosave.  Once more the dopplegangers were quickly killed and Belt asked for the evidence (which Robin had this time not put in his scroll case :P).  Sarevok then turned nasty and attacked Treacletoes.  The dwarf tried pulling him away a bit, but Sarevok wasn't playing that game and turned round to attack Belt.  A single hit took him from injured to near death and both Robin and Treacletoes attacked Sarevok to try and divert his attention - but too late as a second (and fatal) hit crashed in on Belt.

Belt and Liia are so fragile in the EE that I think we're going to have to pull Belt into a side room to have conversations in future - at least in runs where we're supposed to be being cautious!

Corthief IX the dwarven thief - Update 7

Traveling with: Kagain, Minsc, Kivan, Branwen, Dynaheir

Corthief IX has finished Chapter 5. The party is well equipped and used lots of buffs when appropriate - no snafus happened here. The party is currently working their way through the Candlekeep Crypts.

Some screenies:

Spoiler

We gave our best stuff to Kagain so he could solo the 5th floor of the Iron Throne - he did so well we decided to let him keep the stuff. Corthief IX hardly gets targeted anyways, since any battle of any import Corthief IX hides before hand, and also has the claw to help his saves.

Just a quick note - Chapter 6 and 7 successfully negotiated - we are pursuing Sarevok now. The only battle of note was the Duchal Palace fight. I had turned on auto-pause character's target destroyed - I find this option extremely useful for this fight. We had 3 dual-wielders, buffed with haste potions and fire giant potions, bless and chant. The dopplegangers fell very fast, so fast both dukes survived.

Only Thieve's Maze, Undercity and Sarevok himself left - wish us luck!

Corthief IX the dwarven thief - FINAL BG 1 Update!

Traveling with: Kagain, Minsc, Kivan, Branwen, Dynaheir

I am pleased to report Corthief IX did NOT fall at the finish line!

When we last heard of him, he was working his way through the Thieve's Maze - nothing really special happened here.

For Undercity party, I did an unusual play - Kivan, Minsc and Corthief IX opened fire with arrows of detonation! But we didn't have any extra fire resistance (though some with our rings/helm of defense). Rest of the party was back with skeletons in case things went south. Kivan died, Corthief IX was forced to retreat. But the enemy party was almost completely destroyed, only one survivor which the party duly mopped up.

Tamako is stil waiting for us at the Flaming Fist HQ, like usual for my runs. So no fight.

On to Sarevok!

Battle Summary:

The plan was for Minsc to use a PfM scroll and pull Sarevok. But a problem - he's too stupid to use it! And no potions of genius/mind focusing. Finally in my install you CANNOT target with the scroll, it does self. So instead Corthief IX and Kagain used it. We didn't do a lot of buffs, mostly fire resistance, haste and strengh potions.

Minsc put on leather so he could stealth (ironically, it's the first time I have had him to that this adventure!). He then tried to dispel Sarevok's haste - and failed. Minsc then backed up and used his Bow of Markmanship. Corthief IX dispelled Sarevok first shot. Kagain dual-wielded axes (and has the best armor/equipment of the party) and tanked Sarevok (very well, he didn't take much). Tazok was no where to be seen, but Angelo and Semaj go into the mix. I was going to take those guys out, but noticed Sarevok was already badly injured. So instead decided to concentrate on the big guy and ignore Angelo/Semaj - Success! Corthief IX moving on to Amn.

Here's pictures of these accounts

Spoiler

Corthief IX intends to duo with Imoen ONLY in BG 2 - meaning he will be with her in Ireniucus' Dungeon, then after she gets captured solo until Imoen recued, then duo after that (until Melissan, if by some minuscule chance they make it that far).

SDE -06,

Map 2;

Hear text as mp3,

I considered a stealthy approach but the direct attack suits divine casters more… even if Jaheira thinks otherwise. I had a tuff battle against a cave full of trolls but they don’t ever go outside… I don’t have a paladin so the loot wasn’t all that.

s1-eed035.jpg

Spoiler
s1-eed040.jpg

Aoe spells kicked the gate guards out of my way but the allies arrived and I had to stop using my wands… the good news is I own the bridge now and purchased Edwin a new wand of fire but the bad news is the army suffered heavy fatalities which opens the door to grumbling… the fact I travel with a goblin and drow isn’t helping me win them over.

Tactical note; if M'Khiin dances while I move up then I dance as she advances we can bunny hop forward without losing the spirits.

Corethief X entering trilogy no-reload challenge...

Setup: EasyTutu

Another dwarven thief comes off the conveyor belt!

Baldr569_zpseyr7mvqt.png

* Quarterstaff

* Short Bow

And his partners in crime:

Hanna's character sheet

Spoiler

Imoen's character sheet

Spoiler

Concept:

Intend Corethief X, Hanna and Imoen for entire Trilogy - if a character gets chunked then a replacement will be a thief (doesn't have to be pure thief)

Corethief X's role:

He will use the CON tome for regeneration. He's a dwarf for both poison and magic resistance. Usually will backstab or range attack depending on the situation. He has lore job when Imoen not available. Using a bow for the special ammo, such as arrows of detonation, dispelling, biting, etc. For a long time will only work on stealth.

Hanna's Role:

Normally she will be the "target" running around while Imoen and Corethief X pump the enemies with arrows. Sometimes though you can't run away - thus she will use one-hand weapons so she can use a buckler for slightly more AC and be "tank" if need be. Early levels will be to get snares to 100% - then she will work on traps/locks. She is a halfling for saves, as well as the Thac0 bonus for using a sling. She also has 18 CHA since she will be in the leader position (front).

Imoen's Role:

Like Corethief X, she will be stealth for quite a while so that she and Corethief X can be protected and backstab. She's our loremaster. She will use bow and melee weapons others aren't using. She will often range attack enemies that Hanna is running around. In BG 2 once rescued from Spellhold, her buffs can let her be the tank while Corethief X and Hanna do the backstabbing.

Screenshots from the adventure:

Spoiler

We didn't mean to fight the two dire wolves on the 1st map - that would have likely ended the run, but luckily the 1st level protection thing worked - and several times at that!

It's looking really clear that Hanna's snares are going to be extremely useful. They have already killed some harder enemies, like Merianne's ogrillions.

So far it's been fun, will keep at it.

Good luck on your all-thieves run, Corey! Do you plan to dual-class Imoen in BG1?

What exactly is this "level 1 protection" you speak of?

I started a new run, this time with a full party - all custom characters. Still playing on core rules and maximizing HP at each level. It should be way easier than my previous attempt, but hey, I need to get more experienced at playing the "no-reload" way (still doing lots of mistakes actually).

Main character is Alazar:

P1kJpO4.jpg

He is a lawful good cavalier who grew up reading knight stories. He's clearly not the clever type (some people would call him naive and trustful), but he's a nice guy. Specializes in bastard swords and sword and shield style. Since there is very few good bastard swords in BG1, he will also get a few points in long swords so that someone can use Vascorna.

Since he is a very easy-going and friendly guy, he gathered a bunch of "friends" who travel with him.

oTrk1HI.jpg

From left to right, first is Halyr. She is a true-neutral elven mage/thief who doesn't talk much, but shoots sharp and wields disabling magic.

Next is Vierna, a lawful evil drow (though, technically a half-elf) fighter-cleric. Reasons why she follows Alazar are unclear, and she doesn't like to talk about her past and why she fled to the surface. So far she's proved herself trustworthy and her divine spells will be crucial to the party's success.

Then comes Minuit, a chaotic good human sorceress. She has a raw talent for using magic, and especially likes fire spells... let's just hope she doesn't end up burning her own friends (she's a bit of a lunatic).

The brown-greenish guy in the middle is Alexeth, neutral good elven archer, Halyr's husband. Just like her, he does not talk much, but he's deadly with a bow. He also serves efficiently as the group's scout.

Finally, and the right end, the red-bearded Morkaï is a chaotic neutral dwarf berserker. Protected by heavy armor, he takes the blows for the group and likes nothing but to spill guts with his axe.

So far, the group was careful in their travels, journeying south to Beregost and Nashkell to do a bit of exploration in the nearby areas. Two assassins, Karlat and Neira, were vanquished without trouble. A party of dangerous half-ogres was dispatched by the heroes in a quick slaughter. Their most glorious win so far was against the mad cleric Bassilus, who was taken almost single-handledly by Morkaï, with the rest of the group offering support from a comfortable distance. We even met Drizzt, which seemed to trouble Vierna quite a lot.

Their most dangerous encounter was an angry mage at the Carnival. We seemed to have entered the tent in the middle of some kind of marital argument between this guy and his girl, much to his displeasure. Despite not being able to protect himself with mirror-image, he put the whole groupe (except Alazar, who was waiting outside, and Morkaï, under rage) to fear. Melf arrows and Larloch absorptions followed, slaugthering everyone but Morkaï. Once he had used all his spells, Alazar came in and both fighters eventually took down the madman, before rushing to the temple of Nashkell...

Afterwards, things went pretty smoothly. Characters have progressed to level 2 so far, with Morkaï and Alazar reaching their level 3. The Temple wolves were taken down carefully, even if the first vampiric wolf came a bit too soon: only Morkaï had a magic weapon at that time.

Next should be low-level areas in the region. The party will try their strategy on "parties with names who don't have mages or clerics", to get a few equipment and precious gold.

No, don't plan to dual Imoen to mage in BG 1. I'm only using her mage abilities in BG 2 because that's the way you get her.

Because characters are so vulnerable level 1 (think of the 4 HP mages), Bioware put a feature that tries to prevent you from dieing from full health dead when you are level 1 - drops you to 1 HP instead. This ISN'T reliable, and doesn't stop multiple attacks coming in. But it saved my characters who almost certainly would have died otherwise this run.

Ok! I wasn't sure about it.

I experienced it for the first time a few weeks ago when I played EE for the first time. On my way to the Friendly Arm Inn, I took out the ogre, but not before he was able to crush Montaron... leaving him with 1 HP, and displaying a few damages resisted.

On the old game I had never experienced such thing (probably because damage reports were not as detailed), so I was wondering whether it was a bug or a new functionality brought be the EE to make it easier for newly built characters.

Good protection against wolves I guess, but useless against Tarnesh for newcomers.

Corethief X the dwarven assassin - Update 2

Traveling with: Hanna (halfling bounty hunter), Imoen (thief)

I am finding the assassin/bounty hunter combo very effective. A lot of enemies don't die to the traps, but they are so badly wounded range fire quickly finishes them off. This method has taken out all the early assassins.

The first victim of this method was Sendai - both her leather and magical long sword would be a big boon to Hanna. So first Corethief X went into the shadows. He then crept up far enough to see Sendai and then backed off. Hanna then laid a snare close to our position, then threw a bounty hunter trap toward the enemies. Corthief X then at maximum range then showed himself to Sendai only, backed off and immediately hid. The thrown trap plus snare finished off Sendai, we didn't have to shoot her. Corethief X then goes into the shadows again and then RIGHT-CLICK the body - Corey_Russell then goes into inventory screen and picks up the loot. This way the archers never see Corethief X - after all that would be very bad, being only a level 2 thief...

6165a9ef-130c-4f7e-a1f8-e93d18ab7e61_zps

So Hanna rarely tanks after all - but that's mainly as Corethief X is trying real, real hard to stay away from wolf-type enemies. We'll probably have to deal with some winter wolves soon, we need to go to the Gnoll Fortress and get some gauntlets for Corethief X, being a dwarf and all and his penalty to dexterity...

Hanna - 21 HP, 33 kills, Silke

Corethief X - 21 HP, 26 kills, Zordral

Imoen - 24 HP, 16 kills, Cave Bear

Good luck with your latest incarnation Corey.  I've also restarted my long-running monks ...

Phantasmic 6 {52} - monks party (update 1)

For a while now these runs have been focused on trying to do a completionist run in BG1 without having any deaths.  This time, while not going out of my way to see characters die, the main aim will be just to get through to BG2 and make as much progress as possible there.  That will involve Chimera, as the PC, trying to stay out of trouble more of the time.

The monks have made a promising start, with the only serious injury being Wraith taken down to 2 HPs during a travel ambush at 1st level.  They moved as usual from Shoal to Beregost, then on to Nashkel while avoiding the main roads.  They beat up Greywolf for his sword and Meilum for his bracers - getting a rare successful stun on the latter.
Spoiler
They've just successfully completed the basilisk area.
Spoiler

Without the need to explore fully every area progress is much faster.  I would still expect them to do all major encounters, but they're not worrying about leaving the odd kobold here and there B).

Chimera - L4, 28 HPs, 16 kills
Spectre - L4, 33 HPs, 34 kills, 0 deaths
Phantom - L4, 28 HPs, 17 kills, 0 deaths
Wraith - L4, 31 HPs, 24 kills, 0 deaths
Spook - L4, 36 HPs, 17 kills, 0 deaths
Spirit - L4, 28 HPs, 21 kills, 0 deaths
