Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 102 - (2nd and final update)

Pern, gnome fighter / illusionist (Grond0) & Axmin, dwarf kensai (Gate70)

The duo started the session by going to get the constitution tome for Axmin to allow regeneration to avoid the need for healing - a potion of clarity made the sirines easy before arrows and Axmin's swords cut down the golems.

Spoiler

Next they did a number of reputation tasks before going to Firewine to get Meilum's bracers.

Spoiler

Axmin's success in demonstrating who was the master of a sword against Meilum prompted him to want to try his luck against Kahrk.  With Axmin already hurt and Pern missing shots with a roll of 19 she suggested that Axmin might want to retreat.  He was determined to do or die though - and succeeded with one of those options.

Spoiler

After a temple visit Pern found her magic missiles were effective against the Doomsayer

Spoiler

and the encounter with Charleston Nib got reputation up to 20 - prompting the purchase of some spells.  On the way to Ulgoth's Beard for more shopping a number of ankhegs found their sleep morph rapidly into death.

Deciding it was time to continue with the main quest the duo made their way through the Nashkel Mine.  Mulahey tried hard to resist a stinking cloud, but finally his luck ran out - and shortly afterwards so did his HPs.

Spoiler

Axmin's save vs death of 3 meant he would not be inconvenienced by stinking cloud and he took further advantage of that fact against the amazons and Nimbul.

At the Bandit Camp Axmin looked briefly to be in trouble again as Taugosz took him low on HPs with a critical while several bandits were targeting him - however, they all fell asleep and Taugosz couldn't catch Pern.

Spoiler

Blind and stinking cloud then worked their magic in the main tent.

In the Cloakwood spider area Axmin was hurt by sword spiders, prompting Pern to take over tanking duties.  However, she was poisoned by a giant spider and found herself too far away from the map edge to reach it as her HPs ticked remorselessly away.  Eventually, on the point of death, I reluctantly bowed to the silent entreaties broadcast over the ether and instructed her to take an antidote - the first one of those (or healing potions) I've used in a good many runs .

Spoiler

At the Cloakwood Mine Genthore, Rezdan and Kysus were all blinded before a stinking cloud sorted out Drasus.

Spoiler

The duo then made their way down to Davaeorn where he was killed in an amusing way.  Axmin, running hard towards him after using a potion of magic blocking, dragged the final trap close enough to hit the mage and then followed up with a critical to get the kill before Davaeorn could complete his first dimension door :D.

Spoiler

In the City Pern got her own pair of boots of speed from Lothander.

Spoiler

Other equipment obtained without problems included Ramazith's ring, the Cloak and Helm of Balduran and the ogre gauntlets.  There was also a quick trip to Durlag's Tower to grab the final tome before coming back for the Iron Throne - blind and stinking cloud once more making that simple.

Spoiler

After recovering the tomes from the Candlekeep catacombs and sorting out Prat,

Spoiler

the duo returned to the City where Slythe and Krystin were killed easily enough.  The palace saw Belt remain pretty healthy thanks to improved invisibility, but the plan to drag him into a side room once all the dopplegangers were dead didn't work.  Fortunately though Axmin was able to get up close and personal with Sarevok and absorb his attacks until the big man ran away.

Spoiler

After passing through the maze Pern was a bit lazy in setting up a stinking cloud for the Undercity party and that proved costly after Axmin found himself being buffeted around in a fight and unable to kill his opponents quickly.  The last of those managed a critical hit with an arrow at point-blank range to kill Axmin for the second time.

Spoiler

After a trip to the temple the duo recovered Axmin's gear and proceeded into the temple.  Pern explored invisibly to encourage Semaj to teleport out, but was slow in putting up summons and the mage managed to make a nuisance of himself by casting cloudkill and successfully confusing Axmin.  Fortunately though the mage died quickly after that and Axmin was persuaded to chase Pern out of the cloud.

Spoiler

Summons were then replaced to give Sarevok a target and it didn't take long to finish him off.

Spoiler

Pern, fighter 7 / illusionist 7, 77 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 157 kills

Axmin, kensai 8, 99 HPs, 318 kills, 2 deaths

I feel that it captures the essence of her situation when Gorion is killed. She looks on in fear and shock before running into the trees where she hides successfully. Ideal for either a thief or a ranger I think..

In the movie she looked pretty fearless :D ... and acted more like a barbarian... at least when she had that blue body painting.

Gail {5} - fighter / illusionist (2nd and final update)

Moving into SoD Gail put webs and improved invisibility to good use while ploughing through various mercenaries to settle accounts with Korlasz.  This time I completed Fanegonorom's quest before looting his tomb (though all looting was difficult with no inventory space left).

Gail routinely had MSD up whenever moving in unexplored territory in order to protect against killing traps.

Back in the City Gail this time released a doppleganger in the dungeons and got it to hand over a bit of hidden treasure before hitting the road.  Rather than immediately diving into the first dungeon this time Gail explored the map area more fully, running some of Caelar's army around to split them up and allow her to pick them off one by one.  She killed one gargantuan spider, but then came a cropper attacking a second.  I'm used to SCS giant spiders using web tangles, but they allow a save vs spell and I was confident that Gail's save of -3 would protect her against that.  Unfortunately she did get webbed - and I do now have a vague memory of seeing a save vs breath (rather than spell) register against the gargantuan spiders in Gail's last run.
Spoiler
If the web tangle is like the SCS version it wouldn't last too long and she might therefore have had a chance against just a gargantuan spider on its own - but with phase spiders attacking as well she was quickly poisoned and died well before she might have had any chance to break free.

As Gate70 commented, I might be in for a long learning experience ...

I haven't seen the movie, just that still. I don't even know which movie it comes from. :)

In my game she was TOO fearless.

She got into fights that she should have avoided with stealth.

It's Keira Knightley as Guinevere in King Arthur.

@Grond0/Gate70: Congratulations :)!

(That was enough for me to get loads of other images for making portraits. :) I googled Keira Knightley Guinevere under images and very quickly found a host of images a number of which will be ideal for BG portraits. :) Some as an archer of course. Do I take it that the straps around her chest are so that she doesn't get hit with the bowstring, for they are certainly not much good as armour!

I had half a dozen further tries with her as a swashbuckler, but they all ended by being killed by the assassins there.

Baldr001.jpg

Eventually she survived and as a result is well equipped for her foray into the Sword Coast.

In Candlekeep Selunia was twice caught stealing. The first time she was caught she was fined 1gp. The second time she got a whipping but declined the advances of the guard. She made sure that she was never caught again. She went around helping people including Phlydia, Hull and Fuller, not to mention Firebead and Dreppin. Then, after helping Linda and Sir Trun she did her training. Afterwards she was attacked by three assassins, all of whom died. Amongst their equipment was some good leather armour, a couple of long swords +1, a poisonous dagger and some bracers that help with traps and locks.

Baldr009.jpg

She was sadly the witness to \Gorion's death and it affected her deeply. She arranged for his burial and collected his pitifully few belongings.

She killed a wolf on the way to the FAI and once there she took on some hobgoblins. Some of them wounded her badly, but all of them died.

Baldr011.jpg

She helped a widow by disposing of her undead husband, and probably helped him by sending him where he belonged. She helped Tanya against the fishermen and headed towards Nashkel.

She tried to help Mellicamp but sadly failed. She then helped Perdue get his sword back and helped Alana and her boyfriend.

On the way they fought ogres and ogrillon getting more useful equipment into the bargain. She also found both an amulet and its owner.

In the vicinity of Nashkel she was given a ring by Lord Foreshadow and in Nashkel chatted to Noober.

She had been asked in Ulgoth's beard to visit Durlag's Tower, and knowing of its reputation she bought a lot of potions beforehand.

She did very little killing there, but when she fought some, she realised that buying potions of mirrorred eyes, oil of speed, potions of perception and of master thievery had been an excellent idea. She ended up being level 7 before she left. There is more treasure to be had there, but Selunia did not risk her life against the tough creatures there.

Kaxir has heard a rumour there are deadlier Kensai's around than him. There's only one way to find out.

Kaxir.

Dwarf: Melee.

18/00 strength.

Specialized with and pulled rank to get the only Two Handed Sword in town  2 pips in two handed weapon style.

Spoiler

Snitch.

Human: Dual-class to Thief at level 13 or 14.

18/99 strength - got bored of rolling.

Specialized with a Two Handed Sword. Restricted to a Quarterstaff at present  2 pips in two handed weapon style.

Spoiler

Kindler.

Half Orc: Ranged (axe).

19 strength.

Specialized and equipped with axes, 2 pips in single weapon style.

Spoiler

Drood.

Human: Dual-class to druid after Tome of Leadership, and level 11.

Specialized and equipped with quarterstaff, 2 pips in two handed weapon style.

Spoiler

Carlain.

Human: Dual-class to mage at level 12.

Specialized and equipped with quarterstaff, 2 pips in two handed weapon style.

Spoiler

Vicker.

Human: Dual-class to cleric at level 12.

Specialized and equipped with flails, 2 pips in dual wielding.

Spoiler

After finishing up in Candlekeep and giving Gorion an appropriate send-off (looting his corpse), the kensai's have

  • Revive Drood from Shoal's kiss, so he can help out with killing Droth and the hapless Nereid
  • Shared a drink with Marl and found something for Firebead to read
  • Removed Montaron, Xzar and Neera from the realm

Snitch is trailing, with one kill. She's too much of a kensai to suggest a non-proficient weapon might be the cause.

Kindler has 4 kills.

It's a four way tie in the middle, with 3 kills apiece.

@ Gate70 Quite a range of alignments there! I do hope that they won't fall out.

Selunia continued. Note: Images added to previous post.

Selunia finished off some quests such as delivering an amulet and then proceeded north where she killed thirteen ankheg. She sold twelve of them and asked that the last be made into armour. This was because her experiences with the ankheg had taught her that there is safety in numbers. She intends to do some recruiting in the near future.

She then relaxed ;) with Quentin after a meal with him.

She is now the hero that she told Alec that she wanted to be.

She then headed south where she helped Rufie, Drienne and a dryad. To help the dryad she used Lord Foreshadow's ring to charm Caldo who killed Krumm and then some dire wolves. Selunia then killed him:

Baldr018.jpg

(A change of tactics from my last game with this character worked wonders! :) )

She headed west and by splitting their forces easily defeated those who were charging a toll on a bridge. Necklace of missiles defeated the Dark Horizons assassins nearby. Stealth being used to prevent counter-attacks.

Baldr019.jpg

Attacking from stealth also helped on killing numerous gnolls and xvarts. No backstab ability, but the surprise attack helped.

After raiding the cave with its tome and other treasure, she headed northwards killing some quite powerful gnolls in the process.

In the area to the north she killed a polar bear and got handsomely rewarded for it.

She killed hosts of minor enemies, but missed out on getting Neville's sword by giving the wrong answer.

Further north still she helped Charleston and Brage.

Upon arriving in Nashkel they killed a baby wyvern, but not before the wyvern had killed a charmed Oublek.

She picked up a wand of frost outside the mines, a ring of fire protection in the area to the east.

She then took Samuel to the Friendly Arms Inn. (Realised that was a mistake afterwards as her rep was already 20)

There she charmed some caravan guards into attacking each other and as a result got some excellent equipment. +2 lonfswords. :)

Those guards gave her the creeps, and she felt in her bones that they were not what they puported to be.

She thinks that it is far too early to face the demons in Nashkel Mine as demons are scary!

However she did set off in search of Prism. An assassin tried to kill her on the way and it took quite a while to do so. However, using stealth tactics he was eventually killed.

Baldr012.jpg

Baldr014.jpg

Baldr015.jpg

When Selunia tried to protect Prism, she was attacked by Greywolf who wounded her sorely. Whilst taking a healing potion. Isra killed Greywolf with a resultant loss in experience. :(

Baldr016.jpg

Neira was then dealt with.

When Selunia returned to the Friendly Arms Inn she had forgotten that Tarnesh was still alive and paid the penalty by being hurt.

Aditi, neutral good female gnome assassin with a randomized party, update 5

Durlag's Tower, level 1: The party carefully started exploring the Dungeon, hiding behind summoned skeletons, disarming traps and killing powerful foes. Nothing of interest happened until the final battle against the dwarven guards: All skeletons were destroyed, Euphrosyne was charmed and both Juturna and Uther almost died thanks to backstabs. The fight was barely won, so the party took some time to return upstairs and rest.

Durlag's Tower, level 2: Time to deal with some higher doppelgangers. Uther tried to disarm this lethal trap, which seems to be impossible, because he had to trigger it to get into disarming range. Another trip back to the temple. After finally clearing the area of fake dwarves, the dwarven doom guards were defeated with melee weapons and the help of some spirit animals.

Durlag's Tower, level 3: First, Aditi's group defeated some wyverns. Protection from undead scrolls helped with the middle path, and skeletons scouted ahead to clear the maze. Some powerful elemental attacks and wand charges were used to get to the chess board, with the ice room being last - Euphrosyne used a scroll and potion for immunity to cold damage, giving the party time to prepare while Kaldran tried to attack her.

Scrolls and potions were used to give the party complete immunity to fire and lightning, allowing everyone to throw fireballs and freely move on the chess board. A wand of heavens charge finished the enemy king.

Durlag's Tower, level 4: A simple matter of riddles and swapping around rings of free action for the various undead and carrion crawlers. Used a lot of healing potions, but nothing of interest happened. The Demon Knight didn't pose a challenge to the heavily buffed party, and Juturna landed some arrows of dispelling - seconds later, the creature died.

Back in Ulgoth's Beard, the fragile party members (especially Aditi and Uther) immediately used invisibility potions to avoid being backstabbed. Agressive use of potions of firebreath allowed the party to finish the battle quickly even without buffs and many summons, though the party still took heavy damage. Aditi used her first staff of striking charge at the cult base, where Nerthus almost died to a backstab. After resting once more, it was time to face Aec'Letec.

Many potions were saved for this battle, including magic shielding and speed. Suffice to say, everyone was fighting with at least 18 dexterity, constution and strength. It was only matter of seconds to kill all the remaining cultists. The demon stood no chance.

Finally, it was time for the Undercity. Summons and buffs helped with the iron throne party, and Tamoko died as well. For Sarevok, three spirit animals and two skeletons, massive amounts of buffs, potions, magical ammunition and more were prepared, with everyone reaching a thac0 of around 0. He was lured to the party without his allies and, fittingly, Aditi delivered the final shot - only one spirit animal died during the entire fight.

I should mention that Nerthus at this point would have been able to summon a fire elemental, thanks to the insanely fast druid leveling progression, but I decided that using level 6 spells in BG1 was a little bit too ridiculous.

Since my BG2 adventure didn't last very long, here's what happened: Everything started out well, with Nerthus using the combination of 3 spirit animals, 2 fire elementals and insect plague to basically win every major chapter 2 encounter. Actually, the party managed to finish every available chapter 2 quest not involving liches, mind flayers or beholders (not including Watcher's Keep, of course). There were some early character deaths (when I didn't use enough summons or buffs, thinking my party was strong enough for a straight up fight), and I managed to turn everyone in Ribald's shop hostile (though most of the important equipment was bought beforehand - it was a failed attempt to pickpocket his ring of regeneration, with ~115 pick pocket points - is there a set value with guaranteed success?). Shortly before Spellhold, Juturna was chunked by a clay golem in the Planar Sphere, but the group still made good progress. However, in Spellhold, a pit fiend killed Aditi via double fireball - I never considered the pit fiend to be dangerous at all, and I wasn't prepared for it to use two fireballs basically at the same time (before Aditi was able to drink a potion, at least). Well, another death that I hope will never happen to me again.

Still, I'm happy to finally complete BG1 with a randomized party - now I only need to combine my efforts from this run with my Bg2+ToB only run to achieve complete success.

Enuhal - to answer your question about is there a number of skill to guarantee success, it all depends on how sharp the merchant is - more sharp they are, the higher score needed for a success. Be aware, though, that I believe there's always a 1% failure of pickpocket. Thus in no-reload, if a failed pick-pocket could/would ruin your game, you probably shouldn't attempt it.  Note stealing from shops can be done over and over if your skill is high enough, with no chance of failure if that's the case.

Tough break about the pit fiends - I've learned that in BG 2/ToB, it is extremely prudent to put fire resistance on the main character, as there are number of enemies that will use fire damage (I got hit with double fireball from two genies and ended Veene's run).

Hey,

Thanks corey, but I think there's a difference when it comes to pickpocketing from merchants via the "steal from shop" interface and just stealing the ring of regeneration from Ribald himself, an item which he's carrying on his person (you actually can't steal from Ribald's shop at all, it isn't even possible to try iirc). I wonder if anyone knows how many points you generally need to steal the ring (and to steal the bottle from the trademeet genie) - so far, I've done well with slightly above 100, but not this time - is there a way to find out except trying again and again?

The thing is, I've read very different things online about whether the 1% failure chance exists - one person seems to have tried by stealing literally thousands of items, and there was no 1% failure, but that was for stealing from shops. I previously thought that 100 pickpocket skill was mostly enough to steal from a person, not a shop (I know that you sometimes need above 200 pickpocket points to steal from a shop), but this doesn't seem to be true at all (especially not in BG2), since I also failed to pickpocket the genie in trademeet with 125 skillpoints. Anyway, in this case, the failed stealing didn't really contribute to the end of the run, though it was certainly annoying.

Multiple sources I have found (As well as Alesia_BH) have confirmed you definitely have 1% chance of pickpocket failure, regardless of skill. To try to steal from Ribald, I probably would go pretty high, maybe 240. I think you can see the score needed to succeed by looking up the merchant with the Near Infinity program (which I don't have).  You can steal at ton of items, but only via the steal option when in the merchant window - pickpocket you can't do that. You roll D100 and when you roll a 1, you fail.

Someone had a good tip though - if you want ZERO chance of pick-pocket failure (assuming of course your skill is high enough for the target in question), just cast luck on your thief before he tries it and then he can't roll a 1.

I'm not interested in stealing anything from the merchant window (which, again, is not possible at Ribald's shop), I just want to steal the ring he has on his person. And you don't need 240 points to do that - I do it everytime I play BG2, and usually with 100-200 points. This is the first time I've failed in years, though I propably used one less master thievery potion than usual. I just wanted to know if someone knows if there's a set point value where it's safe (or only a 1% failure chance left) to steal the ring from Ribald and the bottle from the Genie in trademeet. Not really the thread for this discussion, though.

Just shows that you can play the game for years and still learn something new. I must admit that I never even think of pick-pocketting, though having heard of the wares available in Ulgoth's Beard I now sometimes go for the ring, web scroll, hammer and the potions and other scrolls available there. Of course my charachter would NEVER do that, though Montaron who he sometimes has in his party does, along with the cloak in Beregost of course. Of course when he realises what sort of person he has in his party, he gets rid of him before he wrecks the party's reputation. :D

Adventures of Seluna

Seluna picked up two allies, Thorin Stonehammer the dwarven defender, and Gavin the Cleric of Coriander. I did think of changing him to a Cleric of Tyr, but that would have ruined the role-play so I didn't. Together they cleared the basilisk area and some powerful wolves in the temple area.

Thorin was about the same experience as Seluna. (Slightly higher) and Gavin's experience was about half that.  The intention is to wander a bit and then do the Nashkel mines.

Everyone is fairly well equipped due to the visit to Durlag's Tower etc.

They made friends with Sil and raided the cave. Afterwards they needed to sleep and about 8 hostile sirene turned up!

They dodged back into the cave to fight them in the hope of keeping the peace with Sil.

Gavin and Seluna got charmed, but fortunately Gavin was also stunned. The sirene were then easily dealt with as Thorin had been equipped with a helm of charm protection. At first I was very concerned, but it gradually became apparent that what looked like a disaster was a blessing. (Loads of experience).

Agreed on the fire elemental for most of the game. I don't think some of the other spells are overpowered, though, like the animal summoning ones. Or you can stick just with Wondrous Recall, which essentially means two more level 5 spells castings.

I do all sorts of things in the game which I would never do in real life.

For instance, in my current game I had a one-night-stand with a man in the FAI.

In real life my wife and I didn't sleep together until we married.

In real life I don't go into anyone's house evil or not and start breaking open chests. :D

I suppose that is one of the attractions of the game. You can play a character that is nothing like yourself.

However, if my character is good, and another character in the party is evil, they should in my opinion both do things that the other wouldn't.

Montaron for instance is always complaining if the PC does something generous. Sooner or later they would have to part company either as a decision of the NPC, or the PC. This is what I like about role-playing.

Update 2 - several very brief sessions so struggling to recall.

Brage's sword was reluctantly sold - a fine weapon but not suited to six level 1 kensai's. Mirianne's scroll was returned while Kaxir thought and thought but could not work out why the extremely ill Samuel had to be returned to the most distant temple in the realm. The one next to the barracks has an obvious downside but the one outside Beregost would seem to be a safe harbour.

Tarnesh tried and failed to cast a spell, Drood landing a scary hit while Kaxir kills off the panic with a chunky strike.

Drood uses his charisma (16) and reputation (16) to get six antidotes from Landrin.

Snitch does her best washerwoman impression to snaffle the Golden Pantaloons.

Joia will long remember the day a bunch of level 1's burst through her door, and emerged as level 2.

Hit points gained: 12, 12, 12, 7, 8, 13. Party range of 20-27.

Silke failed to cast a spell, let that be a lesson to her only offering 200gp for assistance.

Carlain's 2 lore bested the 0 of Drood, so she took the unidentified magical quarterstaff.

Drood got reasonable discounts on PfP and Stone to Flesh scrolls.

The first group of basilisks near a huge skeleton are killed in moments, reaching level 3.

Hit points gained: 14, 12, 10, 7, 14, 11. Party range of 27-41.

Weapon proficiencies taken: 2HS, 2HS, Axe, Quarterstaff, Quarterstaff, Flail.

The remaining basilisks are also quickly eliminated.

Kaxir, Carlain and Vicker panic against Mutamin. Drood saves while Kindler (axe) and Snitch (non-prof dagger) throw from range. Drood claims the kill.

Korax is recruited against Kirian. He survives, briefly...

Kirian.jpg

XP range is 7379-7429. Kaxir is thinking about the sirines and whether non-proficient ranged weapons might be called for.

I don't recall any potions being used so far.

Note for the day:

Carlain has Dexterity of 16, and an Armor Class 2 worse than 18 would provide.

Not deliberate, so user error during party generation.

Vicker is now trailing with 4 kills.

Snitch, Kindler and Drood have 9 kills each.

Carlain is vying for the lead with Kaxir, on 11 kills each.

(n.b. policy is not to attack ambushers whether area or resting, and preference for named/high xp targets with minimal cannon fodder)

Seluna and party headed for the nashkel mines.

They were attacked by a party of assassins part-way down, but necklace of missiles and holy smite were sufficient to wipe them out except for one who was panicking and just needed finishing off.

Mulahey was silenced and after that was no threat.

Xan the fighter/illusionist was recruited, but Seluna was disappointed at his experience which was only a third of hers. :(

She equipped him and together with him wiped out more assassins as they let the mines.

They killed numerous ghasts, a revenant, several dogs and a crazed mage who had summoned some dangerous monsters that they also killed.

Now at the carnival.

Update 3.

Kindler grabs some more throwing axes while the humans elect for throwing daggers. Kaxir will be piggy-in-the-middle, using his two handed sword to fend off any unwanted sirine advances. A Winter Wolf is skinned on the journey.

Vicker makes his case about optimal party position - he's at the back of the party with short-reach weapons. Fair point, and Kindler swaps places.

A hobgoblin hits Kaxir for 6 damage, but the first three sirines are down and rather than get revenge, the kensais move on.

Level 4 hit point rolls: 12, 12, 8, 13, 10, 11. Range 40-53hp.

The second group of sirines are (as usual) easier. With limited magical weapons available, the kensai's turn back from the pirates cave for the time being and run into the hobgoblin. Drood one-shots him.

Gnarl and Hairtooth chuckle as Snitch auto-pilots dialogue option 1. 200 easy gold, maybe there's more, so they attack. Error.

Drood reads the Tome of Leadership.

Kills: 28, 17, 13, 15, 22, 15. Kaxir taking advantage of standing at the front.
