Quick Note on Alia's Game:

SCS or no, Slythe is a joke when you're a solo Mustard Jelly. When you're a solo Archer? That's a different story.

Alia survived Slythe. Barely. Not with the help of Alanis but, rather, with that of a lesser known hero: Zizi the Lovebundle. Zizi is a tough girl apparently. And, as Alia discovered, makes an excellent target for Arrows of Detonation when foes are out of sight...

In any event, Alia is back at the Elfsong now. Zizi is presumably at a temple...

Quick Note on Alia's Game

Success! Alia and Belt survived the Duchal Palace battle. Only Sarevok remains.

I'll post a full battle report relatively soon. But, in brief, Alia buffed her HP total with Vampiric Touch, Draw on Holy Might, a Potion of Foritude, a Potion of Power, and a Potion of Regeneration. This allowed her to absorb a lot of damage. She also buffed her AC as low as she could using Potions of Mind Focusing and a Potion of Defense. On the offensive end, she took a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength and an Oil of Speed. Of course, the Potion of Power and Potions of Mind Focusing helped on this front too.

With these buffs, Alia was able to park right in front of Belt and use her Bow throughout the battle- despite being in close quarters. She popped each of the Doppelgangers with an Arrow of Dispelling to remove their Mirror Image and Haste effects and then finished them with Arrows of Piercing. It was a quick, clean fight. The Slythe Battle was actually far, far more challenging for Alia.

The only problem is that Alia is now low on Potions, Item Charges and Gold now. She may have to do some adventuring before heading after Sarevok.

I'm glad that's over though...

Very good Alesia! Great job with the Ducal Palace too.

As for me I'm slowly moving my F/M up. It hasn't been as scary as before, in fact it's a bit boring but it's alright, I think I need to beat this game before I can move into more fancier territory.

[The Fred]

Elvriia makes her way to Nashkel, where she speaks with Noober, and then heads to the carnival and deals with the Amazing Oopah thanks to Blindness and darts. She then goes to High Hedge where she takes out some Gnolls with Sleep. She also meets the unfortunate Melicamp (Sleep and Darts again being sufficient to take care of the wolf) who she escorts back to Thalantyr. One skeleton later, he is successfully restored to human form, earning Elvriia both a Fighter and Mage level. She's now L2/2, giving her a backup spell and a bit more health. She's still quite poor, though, so she's going to need to do a bit of work and maybe gather a few more spell scrolls, if she can.

@Alesia_BH : just by curiosity, in reload challenge, are anyone doing Durlag Tower and others ToSC quest ? Because according to me, it is the real challenge but maybe not for a solo character.
Although I managed to do it with 2 characters : a sorcerer and a shapeshifter
It is also very fun, Durlag's Tower is the best dungeon ever seen in the RPG games I played

People do no-reload the TotSC areas, though I gather not always if they are soloing, since I don't think they would all actually be doable by all characters (or at least not capped).

Rogues are quite dangerous for an archer, not least because the +4 damage bonus enemies get when they hit a character holding a ranged weapon is multiplied into a backstab.

Beating the BG1 portion of SCS with a solo, non magic user is very impressive - any plans to take Alia to BGII?

@Agileborgne: I rarely complete Durlag's Tower. I'm always No-Reloading/RPing and my characters almost invariably reach a point where the risk/reward just doesn't add up. Were I do to do it now with SCS installed, it would be a virtually blind run.

Trying to No Reload Durlag's Tower blind with a solo capped Archer would be pretty foolish...

I may give it a whirl in a party game.

@Polytope: Thanks for your comments. But you know, I'm not certain it's really harder to No Reload the BG1 portion of SCS with a Warrior.

Warriors can be magic users. Their spells just come in bottles. And in BG1, those spells are quite powerful- comparable to the ones available to mages. They also have access to some of the best AoE spells: Fireball (Necklace of Missles) and Sleep (Wand of Sleep).

They miss out on Mirror Image and Polymorph Self which can be pretty important in some battles, but aside from that, they end up trading a bit of tactical flexibility for Hitpoints and non-depletable offense. That's a fair trade.

When Mages get Spell Immunity -and Potion buffs can be easily dispelled- then sure: it's easier to keep a Mage alive. But in BG1, It's tough to beat a fleet-footed potion-buffed archer. Rogues are scary. Otherwise, they can control the battlefield.

I found Alia's game easier then Alastria's. True, I re-learned a lot in Alastria's run. But if I were to pick the "easier" character at this moment -knowing what I know now- it would be a hard choice. Alastria might get the nod because of the Slythe battle, but aside from that I'd rather have Alia.


As of now, I have no intention of sending Alia into BGII. Ultimately, I'd like to complete Trilogy No Reloads with all of my Core characters. My recent solo runs have give me a chance to re-acquaint myself with BG1.

Right now, I thinking about starting a full Trilogy run with Alesia- with apologies to those who had been following Ao. Not certain though.

My F/M died to the lightning trap in the bandit camp. For some reason I thought she had on the boots that give electric resistance but she had on the boots of avoidance. A clumsy mistake to say the truth. Quite the humiliating end.

Ok. Here is my new entrant. Fortune permitting, this will be a full Trilogy run. Some of you may recognize the character.



Personal Item:

The Quick and the Dead

When Alesia and Imoen reached their early teens, they began playing a game at Winthrop's Inn: they called it "Filtch." The object was to create as much mischief as possible by stealing small items from visiting dignitaries. The player who caused the most trouble -without getting caught- won.

Despite meaning no real harm, simple competitiveness drove the girls to increasingly meddlesome pranks- culminating in a round where Imoen "Filtched" a young bride-to-be's engagement ring and placed it near a bedpost in the Watcher's Barracks. Alesia and imoen agreed that it was terribly clever. Neither of them considered the consequences.

When the ring was discovered, the girl was publicly shamed and privately beaten. Imoen could hear her sobbing through the thin walls at Winthrop's Inn. Her former fiance had already left.

Wracked with guilt, Imoen confessed what she had done and explained the "game" to both Winthrop and Gorion. The two conferred: something had to be done.

After a long talk, it was decided that the girls were a bad influence on each other and should be seperated. Alesia was sent to stay with one of Gorion's nephews on a small, rustic farm north of Baldur's Gate. The family was poor, but the experience would be good for Alesia. Or so Gorion thought.

Unfortunately, years at the Keep had blinded Gorion to a simple fact: life on the land can be precarious. All it takes is one bad harvest and poverty -grinding, grueling poverty- can be right around the corner.

It was Alesia's second season on the farm when the bad harvest struck. The family found itself on the brink. Alesia was hungry. And she was scared. Pride and pride alone kept her from contacting Gorion.

Just when it seemed things couldn't get worse, a rumor spread that the infamous outlaw, Quine, was passing through the region. Neighbors readied their weapons, but most knew little could be done to stop the man. The tension was palpable.

On an otherwise splendid morning, Alesia and her guardians awoke to find their livestock gone- including the horses. Without their chickens, they would go hungry. Without their horses, they would die- that was certain. Alesia still refused to write Gorion.

When nightfell, Alesia loaded a canvas satchel with hardtack, water, and a dull blade. She slung it over her shoulder, and set off into the darkness seeking Quine.

After trekking for what felt like days, Alesia came upon a camp by the river. There were four men: one of them was Quine. There were also six horses. Two of them were Alesia's.

Alesia hid in the darkness surveying the camp- stone-still and silent. After a few hours, the campfire went out, and the men retired to their tents. Alesia slipped the blade out of her satchel, and creapt forward.

Trembling with fear, Alesia reached Quine's tent. He was asleep. Not knowing what to do, Alesia instinvtively plunged her blade into Quine's neck- leaving it stuck through his throat. Alesia could hear Quine gurgling as she ran for the horses.

Alesia rode back to the farm- with the second horse racing alongside her. And as the chiling night air pierced her skin, her eyes began to tear. She reached into the saddle bag, and when she did, she found Quine's most famous possession: the thieve's hood known as "The Quick and the Dead." She used it to wipe away her tears.

The next morning, a messenger left the farm for Candlekeep. A few days later, Gorion arrived to take Alesia away. Gorion was struck by Alesia's gaunt appearance and icy glare- he had never seen her scared before. The two have spoken little since.

Since her return to the Keep, Alesia has worn Quine's hood whenever she is able. Imoen says she is hiding.

That's a bummer Shadow_Leech. It is an easy mistake to make though.

For what it's worth, Alia and Alastria had close calls with Lightning Traps as well. In future games, I intend to take the threat more seriously, I plan to keep Potions of Insulation at the ready.

I had a green lightning scroll and it was suppose to give one hundred percent resistance but I got too hasty, oh well. I would actually use potion of absorption instead of insulation. I think insulation sets resistance at fifty, and the bolt will always come back.

Good luck with Alesia, I'm seeing if a Diviner can make it without being ambushed to death.

Talk is so cheap - you won't feel so confident after feeling the weight of a heavy lyre on your head.

Your Bard might be a little adead, but my F/M is catching up fast. Blindness took care of Neira and Karlat, allowing me to return Perdue's Short Sword and finish the Slime Quest for 500 XP each, and gained Elvriia a little bit more coin and a new healing potion. The big money came from bringing back Brage, however, earning a third Fighter level (for which I took a point in Axes).

Arghain the Half-Ogre and his band were my next targets, and though Elvriia nearly died, she fled and returned, using Blind and Sleep to take care of them and gain a mage level. With her low THAC0 and 3 1/2 attacks per round, she's becoming a veritable dart-thowing machine, but she's still not up to going toe-to-toe in melee with guys like Half-Ogres yet (at least not without her armour on).

Just buying a Mirror Image scroll from High Hedge, then I may be ready to take on Tarnesh.

I can understand why you'd want to use Potions of Absoption in those situations- especially just after losing a character.

Potions of Insulation grants a 50% bonus. You can reach 100% with the Boots of Grounding or a Protection from Electricity Green Scroll (which grant 50%).

Potions of Absoprtion do grant 100%. However they also grant a +10 AC Bonus against Blunt Weapons. I tend to reserve them for Hasted Blunt Weapon wielding Warriors (EX- Drasus, SCS Taugosz). Electiricity resistance can be found elsewhere.

Not sure if this was deliberate or a Freudian slip, but I can assure you that Exhorta is very much alive.  She's also been adventuring most of today, so made good progress.

After getting invisibility she worked up to Ulgoth's Beard.  She didn't have enough money for the green amulet at that time, but could afford the bard harp that provides domination.  Using this Dushai was persuaded to summon a number of monsters - in fact rather more than he could control - and Exhorta was able to recover his ring of free action from the gnawed remains.

Rather than proceed on the most direct route Exhorta has gently been ticking off areas by completing all significant quests / encounters.  All areas south of Friendly Arm now done except Durlag's Tower, Ulcaster, Firewine ruins and basilisks.  Even managed to get the helmet of defense despite the fact that a member of the party has to die, which is normally not a good idea in a solo no-reload - found that a familiar can take the kiss.  Unfortunately the familiar does not get raised afterwards.

The imp familiar has been used extensively in the action, doing a reasonable amount of melee as well as acting as a distraction.  The kiss actually put paid to the third familiar, so no. 4 is currently in action.  Surprisingly neither of the first 2 were the result of criticals, but cumulative damage when I didn't realise the imp had already been hit - this is nothing like as obvious as it would be for an NPC.  The fact that I didn't start with a high constitution has been liberating in that I probably would not have dared to be so aggressive with the familiar if I was protecting lots of extra HPs and playing with it has been quite good fun.

The imp has regularly polymorphed - using spider most, then jelly, with a couple of guest appearances for the ogre.  I haven't seen the need for the gnoll yet.  In one encounter I thought that the jelly would be suitable for the revenant as it looked like he had a magic attack, but it seemed to have a partial physical component (even though the physical damage magically healed the revenant) and the battle was not easy.  Therefore Exhorta had to get into the action with a backstab worthy of a thief.

Exhorta has made extensive use of her bard song in this run - particularly integrating it into shoot and run tactics against tougher monsters in order to take advantage of the to hit and damage bonuses.  This is a bit of a chore, but can still cut down considerably on the time battles take for those hard-to-hit types.  Tried her parry ability a couple of times, but it doesn't appear to have had any affect - I probably need to experiment with it outside the game to check if it is working properly.  Haven't tried the disarm ability at all, but I can't really see that this could be of any use in BG1.

Currently at level 9 (140,000 XP), so just one more level to get before the cap.  I expect to get that before taking on the bandit camp and proceeding with the main quest line.  610 kills to date, with invisibility (surprise, surprise) being favourite spell.

Edit: just checked on parry ability - this is the equivalent of the blade defensive spin.  From the description I thought it affected AC directly, but it actually provides an AC modifier.  At 9th level this modifier is -5, which could certainly be worthwhile in some situations where it's important to get a spell off while under attack.

Alesia is travelling with Imoen. The two of them are very close. She will pick up other allies on an as needed basis. She is independent minded and quickly tires of most people but pragmatic and goal oriented. She'd rather tolerate a bore than risk death.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I guess I'll respond to the possibilities I can think of...

Will she stick to the rules mentioned earlier? That's my intention. (I'll also note that she is skipping the hidden items.)

Will she frown on cheesy tactics like pelting Zizi the Lovebundle with Arrows of Detonation? Yes. And I generally do. But Alia was getting pretty desperate in that fight...

Will she link up with a lover? Probably not, but we'll see. In her prior runs, there was only one man who interested her: Saemon Havarian. Of course, the two never got a chance to get together. She transiently takes interest in Aerie and Viconia, but she's never acted on those impulses. I can't say what will happen this time.

Quick Note on Alesia's Game

Alesia and Imoen have made progress. They are both Level 4 Thieves taking on Bounty Hunting gigs around Nashkell and Beregost.

When the pair arrived at the Nashkell Carnival, they invested in a Stone to Flesh scroll and rescued a young woman. Rumor had it that the petrified lass was a burly Cleric. That turned out to be untrue. Instead, it was a Neutral Evil Sorceress named Yarame.


Yarame will travel with Alesia and Imoen whenever they feel the need for Arcane assistance. Her current spell picks appear below.

Level 1: Blindness, Chromatic Orb, Shield
Level 2: Mirror Image

I'll post more on Alesia's progress soon. I'd like to do RPed journals for this run. I'll also post on Alia's Duchal Palace and Sarevok battles upon request.

Exhorta is still going, though had a couple of narrow escapes in that session.  Once was when she got caught in one of her own skull traps and taken down to 8 HPs; also in the Amazon ambush.

First off was Ulcaster; Icharyd was no problem as with potion of absorption and her girdle Icharyd needed a critical to hit - add in the boots of grounding and his lightning helped heal her of the one critical he did land.  The wolf was more of a problem in that the plan was to trap his door with a couple of skulls before engaging.  However, a mis-click meant combat started before I was prepared and the imp was immediately panicked.  Fortunately the wolves / ghouls went after some summons rather than the imp while Exhorta kept the boss busy.  Some ogres joining the fray just after another panicking howl were able to quickly finish the wolf off and the minions didn't last long thereafter.  Exhorta capped out at level 10 here.

On to the basilisk area.  Exhorta treated herself to a green scroll to make sure her spell didn't run out at an inconvenient moment and that made things easy.  A nice use of the scorcher from her wand took down 3 of the 4 in the enemy party to the south in one go.

With ring of free action equipped the wood full of spiders was helpless.  This time the skull traps were placed right and 2 of the wizards of Thay didn't survive.  Both the others were hurt and quickly dispatched.  Travelling back to the Friendly Arm Exhorta was ambushed by the Amazons.  She used the horn of Kazgoroth to give her a few rounds spell protection and proceeded to shoot and run against the one immediate attacker.  As the other Amazon visible did not turn hostile at the start I thought perhaps they hadn't spawned properly.  However, the other 2 were just biding their time and when Exhorta paused for a moment to pick up loot from her first victim she nearly perished from a backstab.  Once she knew where they were the other 3 were quickly finished off and Exhorta gave a sigh of relief as she healed herself.

Next up the bandit camp.  As I already have Meilum's bracers I'll travel there independently and avoid Tazok.

No Inking to become an arcane caster then? It's just that your special traps have different side effects as you level up.
