Blaggerd is out again. Dorn was dominated and the party slowed. Voghiln got a haste off at the second attempt while Blaggerd lost about 30hp before his aura allowed a potion gulp.

Spoiler

No doubt he'll be recalled to do some more dirty work at another point.

Frith the Fearless and party have just about covered the minor quests in the Coast Way Crossing. Dynaheir died twice and Minsc once when fighting the lich, but Frith raised them again. :) They haven't yet crossed the river. With it all being new, things are very time consuming.  I am enjoying the extension very much.

EDIT

They tried to cross over, but the bridge got blown up. :(

When my party moved to Dragonspear, their experience dropped to 161,000. IMO that is great. They appear to be at about the correct strength.

They needed the higher experience for the Drizzt Sga, but not now.

Freya{10} - LoB sorcerer (1st and final update)

Attempt 7 started well, but a momentary lapse proved costly against Greywolf.  I've been playing without autopause for a little while now and am getting used to that, but still occasionally fall back on old reflexes.  That was the case with Greywolf where I waited for a fraction of a second expecting autopause to kick in when he turned hostile.  I did realise very quickly and paused the game before trying to move away, but he has a high weapon speed and the slight delay was enough for him to get a blow in ...

Attempt 8 was good up to the basilisks. After killing all the lesser ones I realised I didn't have enough darts for the greater one, but rather than go to get more I tried softening it up with the wand of frost.  Eight blasts from that damaged it enough that I thought the 60 darts remaining might kill it.  It must have been touch and go, but it was still alive when the darts ran out.  Although that triggered auto-pause I didn't click to move away before absent-mindedly unpausing - and moving into sight of Mutamin.  Although I retreated immediately, he had time to tell his pet basilisk to attack ...

Attempt 9 fell victim to my wonky space bar when an attempt to pause coming out of the spider house in Beregost failed - allowing the chasing spiders to block Freya's exit.

After a bit of a break attempt 10 didn't start too well when a watcher appeared without warning to accuse Freya of stealing in the hospital - she was only saved by level 1 protection after being hit there.  Things didn't get much better moving on to Shoal's area.  I tried to kill an ogre berserker there: I've not succeeded in that in these runs yet due to their good saving throws and high HPs, but things were looking promising this time with the ogre at near death - when a lightning strike hurt Freya and a second immediately afterwards finished the ogre off to deprive her of the XP (I had wondered if the lightning damage In LoB would also be doubled - which would mean instant death - but it wasn't).
Spoiler
Things then went smoothly with no problems in Beregost, Nashkel or the FAI.  However, on the way to get Meilum's gauntlets Freya decided to try and save Arabelle.  She ran out of blinds with 1 xvart left and, rather than resting, decided to try and kill it using kiting.  That's fairly laborious and it took a while to get it to near death - at which point a slight movement error allowed it to get an attack in ...

Greetings, fellow adventurers.

I've decided to post a progress of my run both on Beamdog boards and this forum. After all, I hope this will be my full run till the end of ToB.

The idea of a new run is based on 4 things:

1) first and foremost, I have never completed a trilogy no-reload run;
2) I've got so used to multiclass combinations that nearly have forgotten how singleclass feel in-game;
3) In all my runs I've never skipped resurrection of companions, so that closer to mid BG1, the number of resurrections has always hit 10 or 15 times, too much to my taste;
4) SoD... the time has come to try no-reloading it.

Spoiler

Basing my intents on these factors, I've given a go to a trilogy no-reload run with 5 generated party members and 1 slot for NPCs. A death for a generated party member will mean a need to create the character anew, without experience (@semiticgod style). A death for an NPC will mean a need to get a new NPC (with the preference for singleclass NPCs).

The WeiDU log (no improved shapeshifting but pre-battle casting is enabled, at least in BG1):

Spoiler

Meet the crew (non min-maxed):

Mortuus, an elf sorcerer (12-14-16-18-16)
Woden, a dwarven defender (18/89-15-19-12-9-7)
Uzume, a halfling priest of Tyr (10-19-10-16-18-14)
Karasu no Yoru, an elf assassin (14-19-12-14-9-16)
Yahiko, a half-elf totemic druid (yes, Yahiko!) (13-9-13-12-18-15)

We breezed through Candlekeep.

Spoiler

Upon arriving to Beregost, we dealt with Karlat.

Spoiler

Helping Viconia brought an armour for out tank.

Spoiler

After that we helped Neera to defeat a bunch of thayan mercenaries. Their wizard failed his saving throw against Command which basically granted a victory to us.

Neera will use only wands (there're plenty of them in BG1) and Identify spell - no risks taken in a no-reload game.

We found Whistling sword for our thief to improve his backstabs.

Spoiler

Poison from our assassin blocked first Bassilus' castings, then we managed to command and blind him. He didn't resist long.

The first level up became available - Karasu got 4/6 hps.

Spoiler

Melicamp was lucky this time and survived the Antichickenator spell, which brought the second level up - Uzume got 4/8 hps.

Spoiler

Upon reporting to Kelddath Ormlyr about Bassilus, Yahiko and Woden reached their second levels (6/8 and 12/17 hps respectively).

With the generous reward from Kelddath Ormlyr, we bought our first solid equipment - a full plate, a short bow +1, a sling +1 and 10 arrows of Biting.

Spoiler

Time came to visit the Friendly Arm Inn. A fetishist ogre was taken down thanks to Command and Blindness.

Spoiler

As soon as Tarnesh finished talking, Uzume began casting Command, while Yahiko called to summon a spirit snake.

Spoiler

Tarnesh failed his saving throw against Command, and then the poison by Karasu finished his life.

Freya{11} - LoB sorcerer (1st and final update)

I'm still trying to make progress with this challenge - and still failing!

This time Freya was up to level 7 and just finishing off the ankhegs prior to going to Durlag's Tower.  All but one of them in the nest was dead using tactics of going into sight of them before immediately going invisible - leaving the ankheg above ground to be webbed and then blinded while held.
Spoiler

The last ankheg was brought above ground before I realised Freya only had one second level spell left - meaning that if she used it on web she would be unable to go invisible.  To avoid the possibility of being ambushed while resting / travelling she rested invisibly in the nest before going back to the last ankheg.  Regrettably I had forgotten by that time that the ankheg was already above ground.   I did react pretty quickly and Freya went invisible as soon as she saw it, but the ankheg also reacted fast and a shot was already on the way before Freya disappeared (and with the doubled damage of LoB she had little chance of surviving that).

@Grond0: Sounds rough! Would a party make LoB easier?

I suspect not in my case.  A party would bring the usual benefits of making the PC much less vulnerable, but would also increase the amount of micro-management needed and require more encounters in order to gain XP.  There's nothing particularly difficult about making progress with Freya anyway, it's just an issue of maintaining concentration and avoiding mistakes.  A party would mean that mistakes would be less likely to be fatal, but I think the greater number of mistakes resulting from a longer run would be likely to over-ride that as far as I'm concerned.

Mortuus, the Elven Sorcerer (2nd BG1 update)

We dealt with hobgoblins who had stolen the Joia's ring. One of hobgoblins carried a rare bolt (bolt of polymorphing), more precious than the ring.

Spoiler

Then we cleared the Landrin's house in Beregost from spiders. Karasu got the 3rd level (5/6 hps) and Mortuus also got an upgrade (4/6 hps).

As you see, I didn't want to follow the general basilisk route to gather XP. Instead, I concentrated on areas related to those the party had visited because of the quests gained.

For the next step, we defeated the half-ogres as Bjornin had asked us. Uzume reached the 3rd level (7/8 hps).

When we reached Nashkel and wanted to rest in a tavern, we had to fight an assassin instead. Neira couldn't save against Command, then Mortuus blinded her, and even held Woden was not in danger after that.

We visited Nashkel carnival, and in one of tents a thief managed to pickpocket us. We were fast enough not to let him disappear without consequencies.

Spoiler

In another tent, we found a male mage threatening to a woman wizard. We insulted him to save the woman and dispatched the tyrant. Silence from Uzume helped here to stop any casting of this mage.

Neera levelled up, getting 4/4 hps.

When we travelled to the Nashkel Mines, we were ambushed by a bunch of bandits. Two of them nearly ended this run prematurely, as Mortuus was hit at 9 of his overall 10 hps.

Spoiler

Still, the sorcerer survived, and the bandits paid their price.

Not far away from the Mines entrance, we decided to help a local skulptor, Prism, and protected him from a bounty hunter. Greywolf failed his saving throw against Spook, and then Uzume managed to Command him. Later he was blinded and poisoned.

Prism was very grateful to us but unfortunately died from exhaustion. Because of the reward, Yahiko and Woden reached the 3rd level  (getting 5/8 and 17/17 hps respectively). Although Woden is a dwarven defender, he will still specialize in flails taking SoA in mind.

With a full-plate and a large shield +1 Woden was an excellent tank against hordes of kobolds in the mines (even with his 15 DEX). He activated Defensive Stance when surrounded by enemies.

The fight against Mulahey started as usual, but the half-orc resisted against Blindness and Command. Neera used Necklace of Missiles against arriving kobolds and skeletons. After that she even managed to interrupt Mulahey's casting. At last, Mulahey didn't save against Command and asked for surrender. We refused, and the fight resumed. Mulahey saved against Hold Person, while kobolds didn't. After several attempts, Mortuus blinded the half-orc, then Karasu poisoned him, and the battle was won.

I did read that with interest, but it seems too risky to me for a solo character.  Even if the ankhegs only hit with criticals and you had 4 mirror images, that would still give them a 1% chance of hitting for damage - and a LoB critical from an ankheg could easily be over 100 damage.  I'm also not sure if mirrors would stop their acid damage anyway (they don't affect acid blob traps in the EE).

My intended tactics with web and blinding are 100% safe if carried out correctly - though that's of course quite a large if in my case ...

Freya{12} - LoB sorcerer (update 1)

To trick myself into maintaining concentration and making fewer mistakes I thought I would document this run more fully than recent ones ...

So, Freya started off in Candlekeep and did all the quests with the exception of the rats (which are really formidable enemies with the LoB upgrades).

I'm not allowing any recruitment of NPCs - which was unfortunate for Imoen :alien:
Spoiler
Xzar and Montaron also got the treatment, though Xzar was blinded first.  NPCs don't get any upgrade in LoB, so darting them is not really a problem.

She then travelled to the coast without incident and blinded and darted Shoal.
Spoiler
After getting a nice 11 HPs for the 2 levels she tried resting, but was interrupted by a dire wolf - which was immediately blinded and disposed of.  The second attempt to rest succeeded and she skirted the edge of the ogre pack in the area - pulling away an ogrillon to its doom.  She tried doing the same to an ogre berserker, but it shrugged off 4 attempts to blind it and she ran away to High Hedge.

At High Hedge she blinded and darted the 3 gnolls guarding Perdue's sword and bought the potion case from Thalantyr.  She also blinded and darted a black bear, although the bear's script makes it move around when blinded (unlike most enemies) so it was really more trouble than it was worth.

Proceeding on to Beregost she helped out Firebead to get a scroll case and completed her collection of bags by blinding Neera (from out of conversation range) - though it took 16 attempts to get one to stick.  Here was one day's worth of attempts:
Spoiler
Incidentally, you will notice on my screenshots numerous instances where the effect is not successful, but no saving throw is shown.  I'm not certain of the cause of that, but one hypothesis is that the game is only set up to show adjusted saving throws up to a maximum of 25 - and if the result would be higher than that no result is reported.  Anyone else got any better ideas?

Marl was calmed down before Freya went after Karlat.  She expected to pull him out of the inn and run round town while trying to blind him, but he was affected by her first attempt and a host of darts duly finished him off.
Spoiler
Perdue got his sword back before Freya rested and then worked on blinding Silke.  Her saves are not very good and that succeeded at the second attempt - in the EE most neutrals will not be annoyed by a failed blind attempt so it's an easy and effective (if cheesy) tactic.
Spoiler

To the south (but, with zero travel time, no danger of ambush) a couple of ogrillons and a hobgoblin caught the blinding bug (the latter being hit at one point by an impressive sequence of 3 criticals in a row).
Spoiler
That allowed Freya to pick up some more XP from Mirianne and Zhurlong.  Normally she would also pull Landrin's spiders out of their house to be blinded, but there's not much time after running outside before the spiders follow and trap you - and with a malfunctioning pause key I decided attempting that was too much of a risk.  To pick up the remaining XP needed to get to level 4 Freya therefore blinded and killed a few hobgoblins and dogs in the temple area (again with zero travel time, thus avoiding any risk of ambushes).
Spoiler
She got a maximum 6 HPs for the level, but far more importantly she now has access to invisibility and will be able to start making rather quicker progress.  On the subject of HPs by the way it's very rare in the EE to have a character with below average HPs (by average I mean assuming an unbiased die roll), which seems regrettable to me as it devalues the joy felt in the original game when you were lucky enough to get a character with high HPs.

Sorcerer L4, 23 HPs, 21 kills
L1 - blindness, protection from petrification, identify
L2 - invisibility

The thing is I needed all those buffs only for the period my jester used the wand of paralysis, not for the fighting itself. So the chance of being hit was very low. If managing timing right, you don't even need any buffs - just timing an aura in the wolf form (which gives additional speed) is enough.

Also, blinding an ankheg would mean it going under the surface and becoming unreachable.

Not in my game.  If you're seeing that behaviour I suspect it's because you've tried blinding them without them being disabled already.  If they're webbed before being blinded then there's no problem.

Freya{12} - LoB sorcerer (2nd and final update)

Using invisibility, Freya went up to the FAI - just taking on the belt ogre on the way (he's another enemy that wanders after being blinded and Freya had to draw a couple of gibberlings the ogre activated away and use invisibility to strand them).

At the FAI she gleefully collected the Ring of Wizardry before killing a hobgoblin and returning Joia's ring.  Tarnesh is neutral until he talks to you, so is easy enough to blind, but she left him for later anyway until she's got Landrin's goods to return.

She briefly passed through Nashkel on the way to Firewine Bridge.  Meilum saved against her 12 blind attempts for one day, but she just went invisible and rested and Meilum (obviously knowing this sequence was only going to end one way) failed against the first attempt the next day.  Meilum's bracers more than double the damage from Freya's darts - turning those into her most damaging possible non-magical weapon.

At the Carnival Freya attacked Vitiare before he could move - turning him hostile and making him try and run (leaving him an easy target for blinding).  Oopah was another victim before she left the area.

Arriving at the basilisk area she rested invisibly before taking on each monster - applying PfP before using blind.  The southern group was enough to get her to level 5 (+5 HPs) - the only minor problem there being persuading the greater basilisk to switch to a melee attack (their gaze attack hits so frequently that it's difficult to complete a blind spell).  The northern lot was then no problem (all tackled outside Mutamin's sight).

Virtually out of darts, Freya left the mage for the moment while she went to restock.  Returning, she headed first for Kirian's party.  Peter and Baerin can both be blinded and killed using a rock to stay out of sight of Kirian.  However, I wasn't fully awake yet from an early morning start and didn't get the positioning quite right to take account of the fact that Kirian would move towards Peter when he was blinded and she caught a glimpse of Freya (it could have been done entirely safely by blinding him from extreme range before moving invisibly into the correct position).  Freya was already moving away though so was safe from immediate attack and should really have cut her losses and left at that point.  Instead though she went invisible and cast web on the group, once more using a rock for cover.  When that showed that both Peter and Lindin were held she tried moving round her rock just enough to see only Lindin to blind him.  However, once more positioning wasn't perfect and she got into sight of Peter as well.  Both he and Lindin saved against the web immediately and Freya hadn't moved quite fast enough to get out of Peter's sight after failing with her blind on Lindin before Peter reacted.  She was some way away by the time a rigid thinking reached her, so Peter was no threat - but Lindin was ...

For that incarnation, but I decided to have one more go at this (at least for the time being) ;).

Freya{13} - LoB sorcerer (update 1)

This time around Freya repeated the work done in run 12 pretty smoothly.  By now it was a more respectable time of the morning though and I was properly awake so, after killing the basilisks, Freya blinded Peter from long range and then used invisibility to ensure that he was attacked out of sight of Kirian - getting Freya to level 6.

Spoiler

The same tactics accounted for Baerin before Lindin was blinded.  I couldn't dart him without getting into sight of Kirian, so she was blinded as well - being webbed first to allow Freya to attempt that safely.
Spoiler

After finishing them off she took the easy route with Mutamin by inviting Korax to join in the fun.
Spoiler

Sorcerer L6, 28 HPs, 28 kills
L1 - blindness, protection from petrification, identify, friends
L2 - invisibility, web
L3 - minor spell deflection

Freya{13} - LoB sorcerer (2nd and final update)

Freya picked up the wand of frost from the Nashkel mine area before taking on Greywolf.  This time I remembered to pause instantly after the conversation with him to be able to move away before he could attack.  He was blinded at the 10th attempt and then darted.

Moving into the Cloud Peak mountains Freya blinded Sendai's archer friends from out of her sight.  Sendai was then drawn away to allow Freya to dart them before resting to get more blinds and dealing with Sendai.  The same sort of thing happened to Zal and Vax and Freya also reunited a lost dog with its owner before leaving the area.  To the west Caldo & Krumm were given no opportunity to talk, while a first use of friends ensured a good reward from Drienne.

At the Gnoll Stronghold Gnarl and Hairtooth were blinded and darted.  Freya also intended to pick up the charisma tome, but rather than spend time killing the xvarts there she tried to pull them out of the cave and use invisibility to strand them.  Unfortunately my wonky pause key struck again in the attempt to do that and the game didn't pause when I expected - resulting in Freya being trapped outside the cave despite successfully going invisible (in some prior runs I had killed the xvarts specifically because of the danger of pausing not working properly, so I was just being lazy there).  None of her options looked good, but Freya tried using the wand of frost to blast a way out.  She successfully went invisible after the first blast - healing most of the damage she'd taken in the interim with her Bhaal power - but she didn't survive long enough to go invisible again after a second blast.

Crowd-controlling spells are very important in the LoB mode, even more than in the normal game. This is why spells like Spook, Horror, Hold Person are all valid choices for an arcane caster. You could have easily chosen Spook instead of Identify - you can ID in stores, as money is not a problem in a solo play. Casting spook on a xvart would have granted you a free way.

Mortuus, the Elven Sorcerer (3rd BG1 update)

We returned to Nashkel and got a bounty for the stolen emeralds. Mortuus reached the 3rd level (5/6 hps). After telling the town's major about the Mines, Karasu got a level up as well (2/6 hps).

We just were going to rest in the tavern, when we were attacked by another assassin, Nimbul. He didn't save against neither Spook no Blindness.

He was poisoned and at one point went invisible because of Minor Sequencer. We almost lost any hope to find him, but thankfully going around the town was enough to come very close to the place where hasted and blind Nimbul stood. After that, he was doomed.

After the long awaited rest, we decided to scout several nearby locations. Neera had fun with using the Necklace of Missiles and her wands against ogres.

At the level up, she again got maximum (4/4 hps), while Uzume was not so lucky (4/8 hps).

Spoiler

During travelling we were ambushed by bandit archers but in general we had good AC against missile weapons, so they weren't a threat.

Yahiko charmed Algernon and crazy Tranzig summoned monster to kill a poor chap. This way we got a new cloak for Mortuus. Tranzig himself didn't survive blows of Woden's hammer.

Then we cleared all the Cloudpeaks areas and the Gnoll Stronghold. Our dwarven defender was becoming more and more valuable to the party. Only one thing was unlucky - he rolled only 1 from 12 at the level up. Yahiko, on the other hand, rolled 8 from 8.

Against Revenant, we used a Protection from Undead scroll. All the SCS danger from Revenant was completely turned off thanks to this scroll.

I did have a quick look, but didn't see anything promising a solution.  After another death this morning which was partly the result of pause problems I've decided that I'm quite capable enough of making mistakes without the help of anything mechanical and ordered a new keyboard :P.
