Alesia's Journal: Entry 1

My circumstances have changed. I'm not sure what to make of it.

For years now, I've dreamed of being free: free and on the road with Imoen. Well now it's happened. But it's not what
I hoped.

Two days ago, I was assaulted by an assassin named Shank. I later learned he was not the only one. For some reason, someone is seeking my death. I have no idea why. I may never know.

Once Gorion learned of the attack, he decided we should leave Candlekeep. I wasn't in a position to disagree. We left in the eve, but more assassins were waiting. Gorion fell. I didn't.

Gorion's death is...I don't know....We didn't get along. And I won't really miss him- not like a “daughter” would
anyways. But I always knew he cared for me -always knew he'd die for me. And now he's done it. I'd like to feel
something about that: I really would. I hate that I can't.

Before we left, Gorion told me to head to the Friendly Arm Inn if anything happened to him. That's what I intend to do.
I haven't the slightest idea what will come after that. I need gear, gold, and allies to protect myself- that much is clear.
I'm not sure what's next though. We'll see I guess.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 2

Imoen and I have made it to the Friendly Arm Inn. We met Gorion's “friends” Khalid and Jaheira. And while they may have been Gorion's friends, they certainly aren't going to be mine.

They're quite the pair, Khalid and Jaheira. Jaheira is a domineering self-righteous wench, her husband is a sniveling wimp. It's not hard to imagine what their sex life is like. And it's even easier to see that traveling with them would be tortuous. I snaked a Potion of Invisibility off Jaheira and left them.

I haven't forgotten about them altogether though. They seem bound to me through Gorion somehow and that could prove useful. I may need strong arms in upcoming days- even if they're welded to “drearies.”

The trip over to the Friendly Arm was uneventful. Imoen and I remained in the Shadows the entire time- right up into the Inn, and past a shady looking mage. We've gotten a couple leads on jobs at the Friendly Arm, but not much was going on there- iron shortage I'm told. One woman wanted us to clear spider's out of her home in Beregost. Another gave us a mark on a belt stealing Ogre to the south. That's all we got. I intend to look into both.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 3

Imoen and I completed our first job today- taking down the thieving Ogre we learned about at the Inn.
Posted Image

It was pretty straightforward. We cased the mark from the Shadows. It didn't take long to figure out what to do. I flicked a Special Snare at him. When it went off, it hurt him badly, and more importantly Slowed him. With a huge speed advantage, dropping him with darts and arrows was a simple matter. That was it.

We found the belt we were told to recover. I've decided to keep it. It protects against Arrows and I expect some to come our way in upcoming weeks. Taking a mark and keeping the prize isn't exactly good business. But I never made any promises to the guy and he doesn't seem linked in. This one is mine.

We're heading to Beregost in the evening to look into the Spider job. I prefer to travel in the dark. I feel safer that way.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 4

Imoen and I arrived in Beregost this morning. Once again, our journey was uneventful. I took down one crew of Bandits with a Special Snare to clear a path- otherwise we'd risk popping out of the Shadows before ranged foes. That could be dangerous.
Posted Image

Aside from that encounter, it was a quiet journey. That's the way I like it.

Since arriving in Beregost, we've killed the spiders and engaged in a little larceny. We made some nice scores- including a Wand of Lightning and some pricey Potions.

Imoen takes innocent pleasure in theft. I envy her that. She says so long as no one is hurt, it's all in fun. Objects don't belong to anyone, they just stay with one for a while. And then they go. Like people.

What she doesn't understand is that theft can open the door to death. For some, a few possessions is all that stands between them and destitution. And it can better to end someone quick then force them to take the long road. Imoen can't see that- she spent too much time in the Keep. Now isn't the time to trouble her with it. We need coin.

We're headed back to the Friendly Arm to claim our due for the Spider job. Then, we have a gig finding a Halfling merchant to the South. Once that job is done, we should be in position to upgrade our supplies. We'll be heading to a potion shop to the West of Beregost then. I hope I like what I see there.

I actually have quite a few mods installed, for the record - I didn't list them because they're the same as last time and I'm lazy. It might just be best to put them down as "various", anyway, since many are fairly minor:
BG1Tweak [CoM] (Parts)
BGQE
BG1UB (All)
BG1Tweaks [G3] (Parts)
Druid Power (my own: Fix Spells, Tougher Druids)
Tougher Tranzig
SCS (Parts, mostly minor ones)
Increased Item Stacks
Thalantyr Item Upgrade
Hard Times
Tougher Sirenes and Dryads (my own: Based on SCS)
Tweaked Bhaalspawn Abilities

Should also mention, Elvriia retrieved Gurke's cloak and took down Tarnesh yesterday. Nothing too exciting, though.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 5

When Imoen and I returned to the Friendly Arm, that shady mage was still there. He has a name now: it's Tarnesh. He doesn't have a life.

We cased Tarnesh for a while. He was young and evidently not terribly skilled. As we saw it, there were three ways he could end us: with a Sleep spell, a Horror spell, or Charms. Fortunately, we had a Potion of Clarity from the Candlekeep. That meant we could take him. The only issue was what the cost would be.

The plan was for both of us to hit the Shadows. Imoen was to get in position, and then backstab. I was to fade, and launch a Special Snare at the same time- with the Potion of Clarity in hand. If all went right, we'd take him down before he got off a spell. If not, only one of us would be in range when he tried Sleep. And the second -the one out of range- would have the Potion of Clarity if he tried Horror or Charm after. We win either way.
Posted Image

Imoen came through with her part: she hit the Shadows and sunk her knife in good- nearly killed him outright. I botched my half- failing to set my Special Snare. Imoen paid the price. She was put to sleep and then beaten into submission with Tarnesh's Quarterstaff.
Posted Image

Luckily, she wasn't maimed- she'd be raisable. And with my Potion of Clarity in hand -and plenty of healing available- Tarnesh had little hope of victory. I drank my Potion, shrugged off his Horror spell, and led him to his death. This Snare worked.
Posted Image
Posted Image

While we ended Tarnesh, I hardly feel victorious- the price was far too high. Imoen went through agony, and we squandered a high value Potion. It was all my fault. My first priority has to be improving my Trap Setting skills. I'm not willing to let another plan go awry like that. Lesson learned.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 6

This evening at the Friendly Arm, Imoen said that I have become "severe." Severe. That was the word she chose. She said it started with the farm. And that it's become worse since we left the Keep.

I don't know what she means exactly, but I have a sense. And she's right- it did start with the farm.

I'm not sure what she expects of me though- it's not exactly cupcakes and ponies out here. She died today. Died.

I have agreed to relax and have a few drinks with her at the Juggler when we get back to Beregost. I'm not sure what that will accomplish, but I think I should listen to her on this one. She may be onto something.

I actually find Tarnesh the hardest of the assassins. If you interrupt his Mirror Image, he normally dies before he can cast anything else, but otherwise it's hard (at least without Magic Missile) to be safe (though I guess you could use Remove Fear). With the other assassins, you can always exploit the fact that you're near a door when you meet them.

Meanwhile Elvriia went west of Beregost and took care of some more Half-Ogres for Bjornnin. She then traveled to High Hedge and spent some more of her precious gold on an Invisibility scroll. This allowed her to bypass the Doom Guards (EDIT: Battle Horrors) at Durlag's Tower, and collect the Tome of Understanding. She cares little for this (7 Wisdom) but I may use it on Xzar and dual him to Cleric. With him as a Mage->Cleric and Monty as a Fighter/Thief I'll have all the bases covered as far as a party goes. I haven't played with these two for a long time, but I did want to do the mines solo (though I'm pretty scared of the roving assassins who come afterwards) so I'm not quite decided on what I'm going to do just yet.

Also, the mods were EasyTutu, SCS, Baldur's Gate Mini Quests and Encounters, Sirine's Call, BG1UB,  BG1NPC, 1PP,  and BG2 Tweaks.

Exhorta is all Elf and, like a good little elf, uses a long bow (kit is bladesinger, rather than slinger).

Just completed the bandit camp. The original strategy was to see whether teleport field could keep attackers off Exhorta's back long enough for fireballs to thin ranks.  This might well have worked as all the archers needed a critical to hit.  However, I wasn't expecting the main characters from the tent to come and join in the fun and so quickly took a potion of speed and ran away.  Once free and clear a couple of fireballs took care of Venkt, who was the only real danger.  Then used a scorcher (which does rather more damage than a fireball if you place it right and move around) to finish off most of the rest.

After a bit more shopping at Ulgoth's Beard, Exhorta will move on to the Cloakwood.

By now you have access to invisibility, so ambushes should be a thing of the past.  I have tried to get into a routine with Exhorta of casting invisibility before resting (and then journeying) so that there is always an invisibility in hand for emergencies.

When you cast invisibility on self you aren't ambushed? I didn't know that. Whenever I use a green scroll for example, they always wear off when I enter a new zone or am ambushed, they never stay on, but perhaps it is different in your game? I learned from her previous incarnation, never leave an area without armor on because she needs the AC very much. If I ever get the ring of invisibility or have invisibility potions, I will most certainly put those to use.

Anyways here's my short update.

A brief summary of what Alexis has already done from Candlekeep
Alexis first headed towards Beregost, bought a sling+1 and killed some ogrillions for the ring of protection. Economically, slings are cheaper then the bow in the beginning. Later on she will switch to bow. The AC advantage of a buckler is minimal at best. After sometime, she has a large campaign against some half-ogres who continually run her off the map. They also roam around alot so it is a difficult thing. She escapes ambushes luckily and manages to get around -1 AC.

Alexis fights in a Xvart Encampment
The Xvarts are making Alexis look good in a sword fight. There's no steamroll here however, just an epic hack and slash, no buffs or anything. Alexis may run from wolves and bears, but Xvarts? Piece of cake for a level five bard. Good for morale supposively.

    Alexis considers selling Charisma Tome
There is a brief moment when Alexis considers selling the charisma tome. The moment is forgotten once Alexis realizes that she cannot carry the tome adequately without casting strength on herself. (I do not use spells to carry stuff from out of areas, one of my personal role playing decisions because it is unimaginable to me to use a spell for hours on in)

    Alexis goes Bassilisk Hunting
After gathering two green pro-acid scrolls and one pro-petrification scroll, Alexis manages to kill several basilisks as well as their trainer. She gains a single level from doing this. She is now level six.

    Alexis battles Tarnesh, well sorta
An assassin by the name of Tarnesh tries to threaten an already buffed Alexis(who has mirror image). A single magic missile casting has Tarnesh dead before he can even cast mirror image, and this would be an example of why casting time is so important.

By now you have access to invisibility, so ambushes should be a thing of the past.  I have tried to get into a routine with Exhorta of casting invisibility before resting (and then journeying) so that there is always an invisibility in hand for emergencies.

That's the method I used with Alastria as well. It works Shadow_Leech.

Well. Imoen and I had out little soiree at the Juggler. It didn't go as she expected. I ended up dragging her down with me.

At first, she was trying to cheer me up- trying to get me to be the girl I used to be. But I just couldn't do it. I can't do it. Joy- even for a moment- would require self deception and what we need now is lucidity. It's lucidity or death. I prefer to live.

When Imoen's crusade ended, I explained our situation to her: that assassins had found us wherever we've gone, and that they couldn't have known where we were going. There can only be one explanation: they are everywhere. And that means whoever is after us is well connected. And well heeled. It's a force we can't fight blithely, a force we can't fight with passion. It can only be fought with ice: cool heads and clarity. That's what it'll take. She gets it now. I almost wish she didn't.

I did discover one thing about myself at the Juggler: I like Bitter Black Ale. I'm glad I found that out...

There was one more thing about that night actually. I'm not sure what it will mean, but it felt important when it happened. Just before we went to bed, Imoen said: "I guess we'll just have to learn to live with it then. Not just survive. Live. You know?" She's right about that I think. But I don't see how I can do anything different- not yet at least.

Green scrolls only last 12 hours, invisibility lasts 24, so just make sure that you travel in steps of less than that. Invisibility doesn't stop you being ambushed as such, but means you can just stroll away while the ambusher looks gormlessly around. No problem at all with putting your armour back on after you've cast the invisibility spell by the way.

Resting while invisible also seems to be foolproof. Again it doesn't mean you can't be ambushed, but you can just move a few yards away and try resting again. When you are ambushed it always seems to be straight after you start resting, so doesn't affect the duration left on your spell.

Exhorta has made it through the Cloakwood.  In keeping with her approach to taking on all comers in other areas she challenged the druids and Centeol to do their worst.  Had no problem with them - surprising how effective scorchers are against druids.

The party outside the mines was a bit more difficult.  First part went to plan with a web from scroll followed by several fireballs taking care of the mages.

However, Drasus was getting far too lucky.  Despite needing 19 to hit he managed to disrupt 3 spells in a row from Exhorta and actually made her retreat to the previous area (the boots of speed making shoot and run not an option as no potions of speed were available) before coming back to finish him.

Next step the mines.

Alesia's Journal: Entry 8

Imoen and I have been busy. We finished the lost husband gig out of Beregost at then made an important contact. His name is Oublek.

Oublek contracts out of Nashkell and has a pretty steady flow of work. We already took an assignment recovering some emeralds for him. It went well. We haven't brought the emeralds back yet- we sold them instead. I figured we could sell them, steal them back, and then turn them in. That would quintuple our take while still allowing me to build my rep with Oublek. And all we have to do is juke some guy at the carnival to make it happen.

We also took down another bounty hunter: Greywolf. He's pretty big down here apparently, but he works solo. And that made him a perfect target. We could take him down -without fear of reprisals- and maybe scare the other bounty hunters off our marks. I actually went out of my way to nix him.

I have to say, things are looking up a bit. Now that we've met Oublek, and are establishing a rep, Imoen and I can build our strength down here in Amn where, with any luck, our enemies aren't as strong. This could work- if anything can work that is.

We also made a new acquaintance. It happened at the Carnival.

We had just gotten done hocking the emeralds when this grubby dwarf flagged us down. He wanted to sell us a Stone to Flesh scroll so we could free some girl. The guy's price was absurd- there was no way we were paying 500 for a Stone to Flesh scroll. But freeing the lass seemed like an interesting proposition. A couple hundred gold for a life beholden: that's a deal.

We picked up a Stone to Flesh scroll from a nearby merchant, breezed past the dwarf and got to casting. When we were done, we met a wild-eyed Elven Sorceress named Yarame.

Yarame wasn't as grateful as I had expected. In fact, she was down right ornery. First she thought we had something to do with her imprisonment. Then she was pissed that we wouldn't charge off and end the guy who did it right then. It's not like she was offering coin or anything though. What does she expect?

Despite her little temper tantrum, Yarame has agreed to travel with us- assuming we work her mage, Tranzig, into our itinerary. I'm undecided. She's a twisted little witch. But she does seem useful. She'd make a good pet- if she can be leashed that is.

For now, Imoen and I will continue on our own. I checked Yarame's spells, and she doesn't have anything that can hurt us really- she relies heavily on Blindness and Quine's hood makes me immune. I could off her before she could even harm Imoen. Still, I'm not sure I want that girl casting over my shoulder in the heat of battle.

We're escorting her to the Nashkell Inn. If she stays there like she says she will, then we may come back for her. There is little certainty here though.

I tested it in my game and it confirmed my suspicion that it's my game that has the problem because it's not patched up or whatever the case invisibility doesn't work as it is supposed to. The duration of the spell is significantly decreased in my game. But now I can understand how mages can solo this game, thanks for the info anyhow.
