I never really bothered with Invisibility before, but after using it to get into Durlag's Tower and out again, I'm beginning to like it. I've always used it in Baldur's Gate to do the flying ship theft quest (the one where you have to nick the things from Shandalar's daughters). If you do, you can complete it without killing them, the Thieves' Guild doesn't go hostile and Shandalar doesn't hate you. I've never really bothered with it other than then, though.Grond0 wrote...
By now you have access to invisibility, so ambushes should be a thing of the past. I have tried to get into a routine with Exhorta of casting invisibility before resting (and then journeying) so that there is always an invisibility in hand for emergencies.Shadow_Leech07 wrote...

Were you wearing any items or running any effects that should have stopped Hold?
I'm asking because some of the protective items/spell effects don't quite work the way they should. The Greenstone Amulet, for example, grants immunity to mind effects. However, it doesn't suppress the animations and portrait icons (whoever made the thing probably got a little lazy...). So, it's common to, for example, to get a Confusion battlelog entry, animation, and portrait icon but still be peachy-keen-in-control.
I'm not aware of any analgous anomalies invovling Hold effects in BG1 but I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few...

Imoen and I had our first battle alongside Yarame. It happened at the Nashkell Inn.
We were depositing Yarame at the Inn. And as soon as we walked in, we were confronted by an assassin. So much for Amn being a safe haven...
Our assailant was a cleric, Neira. The first thing we did was break in opposite directions- that way any spells would only effect one or at most two of us. I also readied my Potion of Freedom while Imoen and Yarame tried to disrupt her with a Magic Missle and a Chromatic Orb. It was Yarame who got the job done- Blinding Neira with her Orb.

Once Neira was Blinded, she started getting panicky. We still had to finish her though. I faded in order to lay down a Special Snare and hit the Shadows while Imoen and Yarame kept her occupied. Yarame also used the opportunity to Blind her permanently. Orb Blindness doesn't last long. It was a good opener since it was likely to disrupt even if it didn't Blind, but it needed a followup. Smart.

As soon as I got my Special Snare down, Imoen and Yarame instinctively pulled back to it and used their range weapons. It was just a matter of time now. Either Neira stays away and falls to the ranged weapons, or she wanders forward and hits the snare. We win either way. As it turned out, she tripped the Snare.

This assassin wasn't all that skilled. But the thing that mattered here was that Yarame didn't need any instructions: she got our plan and fit right in. We didn't say a word to her.
Imoen and I are still leery of travelling with her, so we've left her at the Inn. I'm more likely to come back for her now though. She may turn out to be a good find.

At the moment, Imoen and I have three gigs lined up: a Wolf hunt, a Tomb Raid, and a mark from Oublek. We won't need Yarame for the first two: my Snares will handle the Wolves, and a Protection from Undead Scroll will make the Tomb Raid a cake walk. I may end up taking Yarame for Oublek's job though. I think she can help- even if I'll need to keep a blade near her spine throughout.

I should also mention that I ran into an odd bug. When in Durlag's Tower, I slipped up and let a Ghoul hit me. Elvriia got Held, and I thought it could be then end, but somehow she wasn't actually held and managed to flee. The Hold symbol wore off shortly afterwards, so I may have been able to survive, but I'm not certain. I also have no idea why the game would tell me I'm Held when I'm not...

I don't really like using stuff to edit the game it's not really my style(I don't mind mods however). Appreciate the sentiments though, I only try to find a solution if the thing is gamebreaking and it doesn't suit me in this situation aka I'm not going to lose sleep over it. And it was never really my intention to solo a pure mage anyways, which would seem invisibility in it's working form would assist most greatly. I'm alright with it, a few tense moments in my game will certainly add to the realism.Alesia_BH wrote...

I know PfE prevents Charm. I don't know about Hold, but I'm pretty sure I didn't have it up, anyway. I thought it might have been Bjornin's shield (I think this is mod-added) but upon identifying it, it appears just to be a Meduim Shield +1. I have a couple of other unidentified items, but I know what they do (Algernon's Cloak, Girdle of Piercing). I only worry I might have avoided death due to a bug, which is not a bad thing from my point of view but makes me feel a bit cheap (if I can reload when a bug kills me, what do I do when a bug saves me?). Perhaps I'll just try to convince myself that the Hold would have worn off before the Ghouls could have killed me, though certainly if it happens again (and I have no intention of letting myself get Held) I'll dig a bit deeper.Grond0 wrote...

Understood. And I respect that approach. I was under the impression that you viewed it as a bug that remained due to lack of patch access. In that case, fixing it might make sense. Or not. It depends on how you view it.

Beatrice has travelled to the friendly arm inn & defeated Tarnesh. She resisted his sleep & successfully put him to sleep in return. After beating through his mirror images, she won the fight through use of armour of faith & a healing potion. It's made me realise I'll have to handle the SCS mages with a lot more caution. She has now finished in the area and is set to travel south to Beregost. Currently level 2/2.
More soon when I find the time to play! Best of luck to everyone else.

The mines were pretty easy - only slight moment of danger was a chromatic orb from Hareishan when Exhorta did not have her spell protection up. Daveorn failed to get off a meaningful spell, although Exhorta had to make numerous attempts at resting in order to get her invisibilities back - those guards certainly do like their spawning (fortunately the dozens of them all disappear after a successful rest).
Emptied the shop at Ulgoth's Beard (ring of invisibility) before taking on the ice island. Took a really cautious approach here - mainly using summons or wand of fire from outside sight range before reinvoking invisibility. Andris is resistant to fire and eats summons for breakfast so he had a different treatment - set up a couple of skull traps and then used a teleport field to move him into the danger range. The imp has had little time out of the pack in this session because most opponents can now kill him without even the need for a critical, but he did come in handy to occupy the 15 or so winter wolves in the dungeon.
On to the big city. After her recent efforts Exhorta was feeling a bit tired so has only been taking on encounters that are either necessary or provide useful rewards. Just finished the iron throne battle. No problems, although needed extensive use of the stairs and a rest in the middle. Next stop Candlekeep.

Alexis in the Nashkel Mines
Beginning a new assault in the Nashkel Mines, Alexis finds out that the Amnish Soldiers are pretty good kobold killers themselves. She is able to rest near them and if interrupted by kobolds, the amnish soldiers proceed to eliminate the threat. It is a bit of a hassle to walk to and from the second level just to rest but it is better then dying.
Alexis and the fight with Mulahey
So this was the battle in which Alexis found out she was disgracefully unprepared. But at least for today lady luck was in her favor(and a bit of cheese?). In this battle Alexis forgot to memorize more then one blindness, but perhaps most telling was her lack of anything to protect her against clerical spells. In this fight Alexis brought no potions of freedom, no greenstone amulet(not like she could have ever gotten it anyways due to her horrible missile AC), nothing of the sort, she was basically relying on that one blindness she memorized offhand and this Mulahey saved against.(But of course this was also a game where Melicamp was saved, so stranger things have happened for Alexis).
The battle began with packs of kobolds trying to move in on Alexis, but wand of sleep met them and they fell asleep immediately. As mentioned before, Mulahey saved against blindness, but Alexis own magic missiles interrupted Mulahey's first two castings. From then on out Alexis had to rely on whatever means she could, even using the sleeping kobolds as a terrain block(yup in this instance sleeping kobolds should not be killed). More kobolds came to aide their master and one kobold managed to get a nasty hit in, but Alexis recovered with one of her healing potions. Desperate for something to protect her against Mulahey, so she peeked inside the chest in mid-battle and found herself the recipient of a very good looking potion of absorption. Assuming Mulahey's weapon was blunt she gulped that potion down and went to work on Mulahey with her long sword. The missed hits were aplenty but with a single hit Alexis took the cleric down. It was likely the desperate bow shooting and magic missiles had done their work earlier. And a bit of enemies casting in fog of war stops their casting works too but I can't know if it actually occurred in this battle as it wasn't as if Alexis was offscreen I mean there wasn't much space to run. For a bard that struggled to melee the bassilisk trainer(a wizard with a staff) this was not a bad result at all.
Alexis fights Nimbul(well the entire Nashkel guard joins in too)
Not wishing to repeat her mistake with Mulahey, Alexis memorizes one more blindness just in case she comes up against a tought opponent. She prebuffs mirror image and resist fear and encounters an assassin by the name of Nimbul. She tries to interrupt his initial mirror image casting with magic missile but this time the trick just doesn't fall. Nimbul uses horror against her next but resist fear matches. Alexis next spell is blindness and Nimbul doesn't save against that. In an odd irony, Nimbul falls to Amnish soldiers shooting arrows at him, and he of all people is wearing the boots of avoidance, boots in which Alexis gladly takes.
Of many things including the making of bow and arrow Kobolds into Xvarts
Alexis spends some gold gotten from the plunder of the Nashkel Mines on a new short bow+1. Realizing that her attack need a bit more power, she decided to visit the Firewine Bridge to meet up with some self consumed fighter named Melium. On her way there she encountered some kobolds who thought they were elven in nature with the bow and Alexis decided to teach these little thugs how it was done in the woods. With her boots of avoidance these miserable beasts stood no chance and got turned into the Xvarts from the Gnoll Stronghold. After resting for several hours or perhaps days because she was being continually ambushed by skeletons, kobolds, and zombies, she managed to finally get the correct buffs to fight Melium.
The fight which began with a bit of taunting on the part of Alexis, was relatively easy. With buffs like shield and mirror image, Alexis was able to shoot him Melium with arrows and magic missiles. There really is nothing else to say about this battle, Melium probably expected some sort of sword on sword fight which Alexis couldn't care much about.
The Ring of Free Action
Alexis kills an ankheg along the way to Ulgoth's Beard and then nabs a ring of free action off the female gnome Dushai or (whatever she is). This fits perfectly into her plans as she was lugging around the scroll of web(Dushai also has a scroll of web which Alexis could have most certainly taken). But this kind of thing is probably best saved for enclosed battles. The ring serves a vital purpose later on as well so not all is pointless, and it could very well be important in certain risky battles Alexis is planning on. She also purchases the greenstone amulet which will definitely help her against Bassilus. She heads off to the High Hedge to see if there is anything important there to buy.

I recruited Montaron & Imoen… Xzar died on the way to FAI. When I recovered the wring of wizardry from the tree outside FAI I realized that I forgot to load the randomizer, yet. Tarnesh fell to traps/ arrows.
Added Tiax, Eldoth & Edwin then parked Imoen at Nashkel.
The ‘wand of frost’ (fear me battle horrors… “I know your NAME!”
and the ‘rind of fire resist’ in the cliff-face in Gibberling Mountains but the ‘wand of monster summons’ (Ghast tomb) got swapped by the randomizer… nice boots though.
Fisherman's Lake proved a tough ask with out ads… at one stage I was down to Tiax vs. 3 Gnolls but he managed until the others woke up. Drizzt died to 7 traps.

Almost too easy.
Notable loot; lots of nice scrolls (that I can't learn) ring of fire resistance, wand of frost (10), Boots of speed, chain mail +1, robe of fire resistance, small shield +1, ring of human influence, ring of wizardry, bracers of ac8 (2), and can cast minor drain as my special ability.

In Baldur’s Gate, Zefahyr met Elminster and received some helpful advice.

He helped Scar to investigate suspicious activities of Seven Suns trading company. He found and killed ogre mage in city sewers, defeated priesthood of Umberlee, returned body of Chelak, resolved Poison quest, thieves’ guild quests and various other minor side quests, such as Ragafast, Ramazith and Nymph, Brevlik and Telescope, Yago and Brielbara, Cyrdemac and noblewoman, and many other I already forgot
Most importantly, Zefahyr investigated Iron Throne for duke Eltan, defeated mercenaries guarding the top floor of the building, and was sent by duke to Candlekeep.

During questing, Zefahyr found tomes increasing Dexterity, Intelligence and Wisdom. Moreover, he obtained several valuable artifacts, including Helm of Balduran, Gauntlets of Ogre Power, Ring of Protection +2, Ring of Free Action.Zefahyr is currently visiting his former home in Candlekeep.

Greywolf has pretty good saves, it seems, and he took me two attempted, but in the end, Blindness and darts took him down. Between his XP and Prism's, Elvriia gained a Fighter level (she's now 4/3). She also returned Mirianne's letter, gaining a magical ring.

Back in the city she saved the duke then went to deal with Cythandria. Came uncomfortably close to dying here when a double magic missile from a minor sequencer hit Exhorta even though she had the amulet of shielding on - I would not have been happy if that had killed her!
In the under cellars charmed Quenash as a means of getting Slythe and Kristen to do some dirty work for Exhorta. That was actually a mistake in retrospect as I would have preferred not to have 2 draw upon holy mights, so a reputation hit would have been handy then.
I was a bit concerned about the palace fight, but it turned out to be incredibly easy. Exhorta buffed up fully for the first time in the game. This included taking the antidote from the slime quest. I had expected this to provide extra strength, but didn't realise it gave extra hit points as well. In the event these were rather wasted once Exhorta opened up the combat by using remove magic to neutralise the greater dopplegangers.

The dopplegangers were all quickly cut down - not sure if Belt or Liia took any damage at all.
Next up was a visit to Balduran's old ship. This was easy enough. Applying scorchers and running round the opposition accounted for the wolves and normal werewolves without any problem. Once on his own the big dog also went down quickly to the golden sword. Slightly more difficult was the fight on Exhorta's return to the mainland- largely because for some reason 2 copies of Baresh spawned. Early on, while considering tactics, Exhorta got stuck in the little enclosure in the room. Although invisible the werewolves didn't look like moving. Fortunately she had put aside a couple of dimension door scrolls for just such an eventuality and was able to escape. It took several tries, but a combination of buffing, scorching and swordplay cut down the opposition one by one.
Then on to Durlag's Tower. Didn't bother with the top half, but dived straight down. I don't know what all the traps are down there, but have neutralised them as far as possible by using green scrolls to give a minimum of 50% resistance to all the elements (90% for fire) as well as having the green amulet and ring of free action equipped and minor spell deflection up. That should protect against anything except a particularly nasty spike trap or maze (a quick read of protection from magic should help if the latter occurs). Completed the tasks on the first level and activated the warders. Fear was hard to overcome as he regenerated so quickly so he was dragged outside and softened up with a couple of skull traps (after resting). On re-entering tracked down Love and beat him up with the help of a couple of batches of summoned ogres. The other 2 warders were nowhere to be found, but Love had the wardstone to get to the next level (note to self - beware of being ambushed by the warders on the next level).

Alesia, the Bounty Hunter, is doing fine. Alesia_BH, aka Me, less so.
Were I able, I would reload my last meal. I would not have ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai at the street stall I had never tried before, and I would have stopped eating when things didn't seem quite right. Above all else, I would have readied a Protection from Sketchy-Seafood Scroll before charging into battle...
But alas, there are no reloads in life. I'll just have to suffer.
In any event, I won't be playing or posting much for the next couple days. Best of luck to all.
