Elvriia's Tale

I know I was going to solo a bit further this time, but I just can't help planning my party and once I've done that, I want to cut right to it. So, after leveling Elvriia to 4/4 with the aid of Korax and some Basilisks (Protection from Petrification provided an unecessary procaution, but whilst fleeing, Mutamin's Melf's Acid Arrows caused her to down both of her potions), I recruited Xzar and Monty. I haven't taken these two for a long time (in my first ever game, Khalid and Jaheira had a fight with and killed them) so I thought it might be fun. I used Sword Coast Keeper to alter Monty's proficiencies and to lower Xzar to L5, however (I reasoned that taking away 20k XP from myself should be allowed). I then gave him the Wisdom Tome and dualed him to Cleric. I reasoned that as much as I would value a L6 mage's improved saves and extra L3 spell, it'll be far faster to get him to Cleric 6 than Cleric 7, and I might actually be able to do it before I die.

We collected some Boots of Stealth from some hobgoblins, giving Monty a passable stealth ability even though I've changed his focus to locks and traps, and kitted ourselves out with some better stuff. I then went Sirene-hunting, using Xzar's Protection from Evil to keep Monty un-Charmed. There were a couple of close calls - twice Monty was poisoned with Arrows of Biting and nearly died, and when fighting Sil (who, thanks to my own mod, was Protected from Normal Missiles - serves me right, I guess), a Carrion Crawler showed up and proved a nuisance. I can also say that the Hold bug seems to have been a one-off, or specific to Ghouls, because Elvriia most definately suffered from Hold this time (hence the close call). In fact, she actually got Held through Mirror Image, which I'm rather annoyed about, since I had hoped that would protect her.

Never mind. The party, now:
Elvriia Fighter 4/Mage 4 (almost 5/4)
Montaron Fighter 5/Thief 6
Xzar Necromancer 5 -> Cleric 3

I'm fairly confident that I could have done the Nashkel mines with just Elvriia (and I suppose I could still), with the possible exception of Mulahey, who would have been a nuisance, so between the new team of three, it should be easy. I have slight worries about the roving assassins, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

That's a request i'd be happy to oblige...

I have made a little progress with Alesia though i don't feel up to posting much. Here is her current character info:

For the most part, she's been soloing combat and using Imoen and Yarame for support and insurance. No close calls yet. She's a Sun Tzu style warrior: she wins first, and then goes to war.

Her standard battle plan is to buff with Strength and Protection from Missles from Imoen and then set two Snares just beyond sight range. Next, she tosses her Special Snares, moves in for a Backstab, and then breaks for the second set of Snares- while immune to ranged fire. She'll typically keep her Aura clear at this phase and keep an appropriate counter Potion on hand. She rarely takes meaningful damage.

If anyone survives the second Snare set, they meet Yarame and Imoen. They'll engage with Mage buffed AC's and Mirror Images. Magic Missle, Blindness, Invisibility->Alesia are their primary offensive tools. Skull traps have just become available.

Now that Alesia has the Ring of Free Action and the Greenstone Amulet, she can use her Aura for offense in Combat as well. As an example, she might toss a Potion of Explosions or Oil of Fiery Burning as she's running for her second set of snares.

Anyhoo. That will proably be it for awhile. Continued good luck to the active players!

Best,

A.

Another mini-update:

After killing Sil, I used Invisibility to bypass the Flesh Golems in Black Alric's Cave and get the Constitution Tome. Our only magical weapon is Greycloak's Halberd +1, thanks to Hard Times, so killing them would be possible but only just, even with Mirror Images and so forth. However, Elvriia now has 17 Con just in time for her 5th Fighter level - with hindsight, I could probably have used scrolls to get here a lot earlier, but then they do cost a lot with HT installed.

A few Worgs, another Sirene and Arkushule provided enough XP for both Xzar and Elvriia to gain levels. Hopefully, Xzar should regain his Mage abilities soon. Now back in Beregost, getting ready for Nashkel.

Another short update:

We headed down into the mines. The main body of the mines were almost without incident, and very straightforwards. The battle with Mulahey was made a lot easier by Sleep. Mulahey hit Elvriia with a Rigid Thinking, but got hit in return by Blindness. This essentially took him out of the fight, but Elvriia did decide at one point to attack Xan, which made him go hostile. I figured he'd forgive us, given the circumstances, so I used SCK to make him happy again and picked him up. Despite his low Constitution, he actually has more health than Xzar, but I plan on leaving him in Beregost. I just might want to use him later, especially if Xzar bites the dust.

The current party:
Elvriia Fighter 5 / Mage 4
Montaron Fighter 5 / Thief 6
Xzar Necromancer 5 -> Cleric 4
Xan Enchanter 6

Was going to call it a night, and I probably should have; a fatal slip-up has left Elvriia with some of my earlier entrants.

Tranzig was delightfully more difficult than usual, and I let Monty get hit too often by both Lightning Bolts, so we headed to the Temple to raise him. Unfortunately, we were attacked by the amazonian assassins. We fled, and went to Nashkel instead, then to High Hedge (wary of getting caught by two assassin groups at once, and also to give Thalantyr the vial of mysterious liquid from the mines). With a Hold Person catching three of the four, and Blindness taking the other, these guys were quite easy, even when Hold wore off. The bad news is that after resting and heading to take on the others, I forgot to remove Elvriia's armour. I gave the others orders whilst paused, and quickly switched it out, but this gave the assassins time to hit her and interrupt her Mirror Image. She had another and used it, but succumbed to Hold Person herself. The other assassins ploughed through Xzar and Monty and then proceeded to cut away her Images and then her herself. I guess I got a little complacent after the previous group, and a little on the wrong foot, so to speak, after the start.

I really want to get a little further with some of my previous runs, including this one, so I don't think I'll start a new character just yet. :-(

Danny ud2;
Current Rep = 6, too low for rangers & paladins… so parked Tiax, Montaron, Edwin & Eldoth at Nashkel then Imoen re-joined us with a tail about this guy called something-wolf. At first we were mistaken for him but we set that strait and grabbed a scroll from the temple before setting off to get Branwen.

This wolf guy has a solid rep so Ormaline dropped her special trap and Danny finished him with the wand of frost. Rep = 8 now so we picked up Ajantis then back tracked to high hedge for some magic shopping (wand of sleep & fear)... also picked up Kivan long enough to get the spear.

Nashkel mines almost finished my run, I should have buffed up a bit more against the Sharman but I got excited and charged him. One sleep took out Ajantis and Danny… pilot error. First Branwen then Imoen and finally Ormaline died defending Danny until he got back up… now it’s Danny vs. the shaman and chief plus an ogre summoned by the shaman. Danny put the ogre to sleep then kicked familiar out of the pack and he (Rex) succeeded in blinding the shaman with ‘Glitterdust’. Two shots from the ‘wand of frost’ killed the chief and ogre then the shaman managed to ‘Charm’ Rex just before getting orbed to death. Poor Rex had to be euphemised... In the basic game having your familiar charmed bugs them out… you can pull them into and out of your pack but that’s all you can do with them. The only way to fix it is kill them and resummon a new one*.

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Posted Image

Danny picked up the loot/ gear and legged it back to nashkel as fast as the boots of speed would take him. Spending all our cash on a ‘Wand of Sleep’ seemed like a sound investment at the time but my 405 remaining gold would only allow for Ormaline’s raising. If I wanted to keep my current good party (and I did) then I only had room for one helper… Tiax wins the space because of his Ghast.

Back at the mines and Ormaline killed most the ads with her two traps before the pet Ghast ate both Mulahey and his remaining skellys single handed. I dismissed Tiax and told Xan to meet me back at the inn… had to run past the jellies… to get out because I had no way to kill them but selling the extra gear raised enough gold to raise the rest of my party, current rep = 9. A tactical note; the original game has his summons arrive in two lots but SCS changes it so that they all arrive at the same time… and hence all die together when the traps trigger!

Posted Image

Loot; some more scrolls, Wand of Sleep, Wand of Fear, Amulet of Metaspell influence, Girdle of Bluntness, Studded leather + 2, Ring of Infravision, Imoen’s artifact, frail +1 (sold) & can cast another minor drain as my special ability… unlucky!

* As this is a known bug I felt justified using shadow-keeper to remove the constitution penalty, however if you guys don’t agree then I’ll put it back in.

Yeah, it's a shame. When I went back and re-did that fight, a quadruple-Hold from Xzar made things ridiculously easy. I guess that's why I never really used to like save spells in the first place - they can be very powerful, but they're just not reliable.

The Grand Experiment
Alexis wanted to test out her new combination of the free action ring and web, so she headed down to the area where ogres were running rampant(their leader was an ogre beserker). The combo worked against them and she took them all out with ease, but there was a bandit group in the area which proved to be much more difficult to deal with, so perhaps this combination isn't as incredible as it seems. Perhaps with the addition of greater malison, it will prove to be much more useful, but time will tell.

Battle with Bassilus
The battle was quite straightforward. Using a charge off the greenstone amulet, Alexis was able to protect herself against all the clerical attacks Bassilus had. But this probably wasn't necessary as web practically wiped all his spells out by entrapping him as he cast his spells. Web also kept his minions at bay while Alexis directed two castings of magic missile at Bassilus and then swung down with her sword. This eventually was the end of Bassilus and Alexis collected her reward while encumbered. Other bandits such as Sendai are slain, her studded leather +2 is much more practical then the heavy chainmail that Alexis has been wearing since her days in Beregost.

The End of the Road
This was due to overconfidence I suppose, whatever the case Alexis was ambushed and killed by bandits, apparently they actually do pick up in difficulty as the game progresses and I suppose I do get wee bit overconfident when I start winning. But it was a good game nevertheless. The mistake I made obviously was transversing across long distances. Whatever the matter what is done is done.

With that said I will be soloing a fighter next. It will be Hope the same character I solo-ed ascension with. Her stats are basically 18 to str dex and con.

Soloing fighter is very difficult, but it can be done. It will be interesting run.

Quick update on soloing cleric Zefahyr:

On behalf of duke Eltan, Zefahyr
revisited his former home in Candlekeep. He killed false priest of Oghma, revealed
doppelganger posing as Shistal, and defeated leaders of Iron Throne.

Posted Image

He was imprisoned by Ulraunt and escaped with the help of Thalantyr. Zefahyr entered Candlekeep catacombs and cleared them from spiders and lesser doppelgangers. With the help of various protective spells and thanks to violet potion (STR 25), he bashed open the tombs and looted them.

Posted Image

In the next part of underground complex, Zefahyr defeated false Elminster and mercenaries led by
Prat. Protected by Sanctuary, he sneaked around phase spiders and greater basilisks and left the underground.

Quick Note Alesia's Game

Alesia is headed to Baldur's Gate along with Imoen, Viconia, and Yarame.

My party play is definitely a bit rusty and some of the recent battles have been messier then they should have been. I basically ended up fiddling with the NPCs for a while before Alesia took control and won the battles.

The only genuinely close call was in the Drasus battle. Alesia had a good plan. However, I muffed it up in the prep phase.

Basically, I had wanted Imoen and Alesia to approach from the North- that way Alesia would be able to use her Special Snares on the principles. The trick, of course, would be getting both of them past the mages. Alesia passed through Invisible and Hidden in Shadows with the Cloak of Non-Detection in her inventory. I hoped that would draw out and foil any potential divination casts. Kysus didn't fall for it though. He let Alesia pass, but then detected Imoen when she tried to come through later.

Alesia had just laid down a Snare when Imoen was detected so her Aura was clouded. And since I wasn't expecting the battle to begin yet, she hadn't activated the Greenstone Amulet. Unsurprisingly, Kysus first move was to cast Confusion on Alesia. Alesia tried to foil it by hitting the shadows, but she was unsuccessful. Then she failed her save. Fortunately, she was at the very edge of the battle zone so not all was lost. I had Viconia Santuary and then pass through to Alesia. Imoen and Yarame were left to tangle with Drasus et al. While Viconia tended to Alesia- first trying to dispel (and failing) and then engaging her in combat and drawing were away from the danger zone.

Pre-buffed and prepared, Imoen and Yarame would have been perfectly capable of handling Drasus and his buds on thie own. But unprepared and in a state of panic? Not so much. Imoen took a Flame Arrow from Kysus and failed a save against Blindness from Rezdan. And despite having a full, fresh set of Mirror Images, Drasus got lucky and dropped the 22HP Sorceress in a single swing. Imoen freaked: panic and then death.

So now it was just a Confused Alesia and a harried Viconia against a completely unhampered Drasus and his Allies. Fortunately, Viconia had led Alesia far enough away from the battlefield that she was almost ready to fight by the time they arrived. And once she recovered, she was able to use the Shadows near the Mine entrance to Backstab and slice the to pieces- everything went more or less fine once Alesia was in control of herself.

The only slightly scarry moment during this phase was when Kysus started unloading his Magic Missles while the Shield Amulet was on the other side of the combat zone. He made progress with his Missles, and then followed with a Melf's Acid Arrow- which might have been enough to finish her had Alesia not countered with a Potion of Magic Blocking. With the Potion though, she was able to dispel the effect, scramble, hit the Shadows, and then Heal.

Huh? This "quick note" ended up being longer than I expected. Anyhoo. I'll update the Journals and post some screenshots soon.

Best,

A.

Quick Note:

Since I ahve my eye on completing the Trilogy with each of my core characters, I've become increasingly curious about whether my Druid, Aliana, can solo the BG1 portion. And while I'm continuing Alesia's game, I've started experimenting with her.

This may end up being like Alia's game- starting as an experiment and then ending in a full BG1 run- so I mine as well introduce her.

Both. Really though, it's about survival, it's like in BG2, the trouble spots are the mages. I'll post her progress soon, she's in chapter 3 atm.

Hope the Fighter
Female human Lawful good
str 18/24 dex 18 con 18 int 9 wis 10 char 12

The levels have been coming quickly for the lonesome fighter named Hope. After saving Melicamp she is already on her way to the next level. An astounding display of experience gaining just plain smart adventuring from our great fighter.

Hope flies through
Adventuring has brought Hope to a level six fighter. She hunted basilisks, killed the swordsmen Greywulf and Meilum by using the same tactic of using a terrain block, and had some apple pie to go along with all this. She is preparing to deal with ankhegs to the north and the nashkel mines to the south.

In which Hope struggles against an Ankheg
There is an ankheg which bars the way to Ulgoth Beard. Hope actually gets hit once and she suffers a bit under half her health. Ankhegs seem like mean beasts after all.

First True Adversary
After Hope had cleared Nashkel Mines by easily dispatching Mulahey(she evidently did not need to use a charge of the Greenstone Amulet) she met a foe much tougher then Mulahey in the form of Nimbul. Another charge from greenstone amulet protected Hope against horror but the magic missiles afterwards nearly kill her(she is left with a measly five hit points after several castings. She had also used up all her healing potions and ran into a door to refuel). It seems Nimbul is a great enemy. Hope goes to the Temple area and buys several healing potions and elixir of health. After being run off a map against Nimbul she knows she need to redeem herself and come back to face him once more.
The second round went a bit like this: Hope used another precious charge of the greenstone amulet and then proceeded to get near a door so that whenever she took damage from magic missile, she could enter and shut door(it didn't matter as BG1 does not have enemies enter room like in Icewind Dale) and heal up. Sometimes she didn't even use the door and just fled from Nimbul to drink up and heal up. After a whopping five or six castings of magic missiles that essentially could wipe out half of Hope's health, Nimbul finally ran out of magic missiles and Hope dashed up to his face and started swinging her sword. Down he went and Hope gained the boots of avoidance. Hope went to the nashkel temple to restock on healing potions because apparently she is probably going to need them later on against mages.

(Magic missile at high levels is incredibly powerful. If I had to do that battle again I probably would buy magic blocking potions from the High Hedge)
Hope goes down the Ankheg Hole
Ankhegs are easier to kill now with the boots of avoidance. With a -12 AC against missile weapons, Ankhegs can't hit the broad side of the barn, at least when it pertains to Hope. She is hit one time and it does half her health worth of damage, which is quite scary but it is just that one time and she gets over it quickly by gulping down healing potions.

Tranzig
This was a short and quick battle. Hope does buy a magic blocking potion but it remains to be seen if it had any effect on melf's acid arrow which Tranzig threw against Hope. Hope's arrows cut him down to size, and Hope locates the bandit camp HQ.

I recommend investing in the Amulet of the Shield (sold by one of the Nashkell Carnival merchants). A great buy for virtually any solo character. You get 10 charges for around 600 gold and can sell / re-buy the Amulet to recharge it.

If you're willing to use doors to escape after being hit, then why not do so before?  If you're already close to a door it's easy to step through after a mage has started casting (even something as quick as magic missile) in order to avoid the spell.  Doing this a few times will get rid of the opponent's spells without pain.

In the version of BG1 that I have, the Shield spell actually doesn't protect against magic missile. Kind of lame.

You're right. I wasn't really thinking during that battle actually...and I didn't expect him to have so many level one spell slots. I usually have him blinded or commanded after the horror spell, which of course do not exist for a fighter....^_^

Agreed. The Shield Amulet is a great bargain. It's usually the first magical item that my characters buy.

I've already gotten her to Level 6. She's pretty capable at this point. She'd be fine up to the Slythe fight. I could see that getting dicey for her though. The Duchal Palace fight could be problematic too since ranging Dispel correctly could be difficult.
