Alesia are you playing with BG2 spells (do you have Ironskins)?

I was thinking of starting a BG1 game with a druid (with a party though, a party of druids in fact). May post more details later.

@ Shadow_Leech

Something else you could consider is the Horn of Kazgaroth; it's supposed to protect against all 1st and 2nd level spells (although this could be install-dependent too). It does 10 HP of damage to the user each time a charge is activated but may be worth thinking about.

Thanks, I'll definitely try it out. Tarnesh is available for experimentation.

I used it a bit in my game with Exhorta. although it got overtaken after a while by combination of green amulet, ring of free action and minor spell deflection.  It seemed to be useful, although the very short duration means you need to be careful with it.

Mods: EasyTUTU, Degreenifier
Difficulty: Always Core
Self imposed rules: Always rp alignment and paladin codex. Minimize metagaming and engine/AI exploits. Realistic

exploration of the Sword Coast, i.e. like the story wants you to go. No secret items.

Name: Ceawen
Race: Human
class: Cavalier
Alignment: Lawful Good
Proficiencies: ** Two Handed Sword ** Two Handed Style
Attributes: 18/86, 18, 18, 10, 13, 18 [god like, i know]

Prologue
Ceawen did all chores around Candlekeep. He bought a two handed sword, splint mail and a helmet.

Chapter 1
Together with Imoen Ceawen visited the corpse of Gorion. They fought two wolves and a bunch of gibberlings. Ceawen had to drink two healing potions but thankfully survived. Both went on to the FAI. On the way they had to kill again gibberlings and a group of Xvarts.
At the FAI they were attacked by Tarnesh but quickly made him regret his evil ways. Inside they met Khalid and Jaheira

which are now part of the group. [Khalid's proficiencies changed to **Long Bow, **Long Sword]. They returned Jojas ring before they went south where they cleared the hostile wildlife. In Beregost they calmed Marl, brought a book to Firebead, returned a letter and boots of stealth and killed hige spiders.
All leveled and only Ceawen had really bad luck with a roll of 1 in hp.
They traveled back to FAI and brought the gnomes their possesions. Back in Beregost they cleared the temple area except the wolves. Ceawen lvl 3 = 28 hp (rolled 5)
Posted Image

The party went south and got to Nashkell.

Chapter 2
Neira was defeated and Minsc joined the party.
Posted Image
Rescueing Dynaheir has preference so the party travels west where they are attacked by a whole Xvart village. Further to the west they help a man who has seen a polar bear. No Boots of the North though, since another party member reported back.

Ceawen lvl 3, 28hp + *Long Sword
Jaheira lvl 3/3, 29hp + *Sword & Shield
Imoen lvl 4, 30hp + *Short Sword
Khalid lvl 3, 37 hp + *Long Bow
Minsc lvl 2, 19 hp

Exhorta continued her progress through Durlag's Tower.  Not greatly to my surprise Pride and Avarice were waiting on the second level, but Exhorta already had her standard buffs on and took no immediate damage.  However, she was clearly outmatched and retreated upstairs.  Avarice made the mistake of following on his own and paid the penalty and Pride could then be dealt with reasonably easily.

Continued on dealing with greater dopplegangers and traps one by one.  This was rather boring and led to Exhorta's downfall - she engaged a doppleganger without mirror image and only half a stoneskin and took 20 odd HPs of damage from melf's missiles before noticing it.  She did have the chance to run upstairs, but had already done that quite a few times and took the chance she could finish off the doppleganger quickly with a cone of cold from her wand.  She failed - and died.

I'm pretty certain that she could have beaten Sarevok with one hand tied behind her back - the combination of wands, potions, arrows of dispelling, boots of speed and scroll of magic protection would have meant only the skeleton warriors would have had a chance to touch her and they would have needed criticals to hit their way through her stoneskin.  However, the tedium of preparing to deal with multitudes of traps of unknown effects in Durlag's Tower eventually wore her down.

I think I'll take a break from BG1 for a while - probably give Risque a chance in BG2 to see if she can show what a wild mage can do.

How do you feel about attacking targets whilst they 'sleep'?

I have noticed that Adjantis will attack some monsters i.e. Gholls but won't attack others... I'm not sure if it is the type of target or their alingment that he i.e. kobolt or evil?

Edit;
@GrondO Sorry m8... Death by boredom claims more lives than any other monster.

Held or sleeping enemies should not be attacked normally, you are right.
I think this will be difficult and make a concession here. But he won't attack fleeing enemies (yellow circle).

Hmm i would like to exchange Xan with Dynaheir, but i really don't need Minsc in the party.

Battle with Tarnesh
In this fight, Hope buffed the horn, but unfortunately was unable to test if it actually worked because Tarnesh died to a guard before he could actually cast a single magic missile.

Time for Bassilus
Hope uses a charge from the greenstone amulet to draw Bassilus out. After he is away from his minions he is destroyed.

(Game crashed when Hope was wandering around Nashkel, don't know why but anyways autosave just returned her to the place before she was in Nashkel)

Half-ogres
Hope goes hunting for gold and experience, and trounces some half-ogres just a ways south of Beregost. She also takes out the amazon assassins in the exit to the Nashkel Mines using another greenstone amulet charge.

Ring of Invisibility
I suppose I should note that the ring of invisibility seems to have a longer time limit then the spell "invisibility".

The Bandit Camp
Hope learned an important lesson in this battle, and that was that the ring of invisibility can be used to wait out mirror image, and this is exactly what she did here. After the mirror image was gone, Hope started tossing her darts of wounding at the mage and while he did manage to get off a horror spell, Hope who was wearing the cloak of displacement managed to saved against it and hit him with the second dart. I did consider using the greenstone amulet and perhaps this was the time to also use the horn but evidently I did not feel it necessary so the fight is what it is. The mage is poisoned and is immediately shot down by Hope. The remainder of the battle consisted of enemies who attempted to get through -17 AC worth of missile defense and Hope just plowing through. She took off the boots of avoidance afterwards and took on the boots of grounding as well as the green scroll of lightning to open the chest and get the goods inside to move onwards to the next chapter.

Option 1; is kill him off but as you are a paladin I suppose that’s out.

Option 2; ‘charm’ Minsc with Algernon’s cloak (any condition that takes him out of his right mind will do) now have them join your group but dismiss Minsc. Because he is charmed he will not ask you to reconsider kicking him… this trick works best if you park him in an empty building somewhere because returning to the same map at a later date can have him come to his senses.

Option 3; use a mod that allows splitting of groups, eg. Sword Coast Stratagems.

Hope died while she was collecting wvyren heads henceforth she was collecting gold. She capped out though. I think I will try Alexis(bard) once more.

I know. Another option is to just kick him out while he is in a closed room but i try to roleplay and don't want to mess with his and Dynaheirs initiating rites.

BG2 spells are available in my install, I've been ambivalent about using them though.

In Aliana's case, I think I would have to restrict their use to get a good playthrough- the Avenger kit is somewhat broken in BG1. Think about it: tons of Chromatic Orbs, Webs, and Lightning Bolts (with Protection from Lightning). Improved Invisibility, Nymphs, BG1 style summoning spells... It's a bit much.

Then there is the Fire Salamander form. It's only marginally useful in BG2 but it's fearsome in BG1. AC of -4 (without  buffs), 2 APR, Strength of 18/75, permanent Fireshield.

The Kolbolds attacking Fire Salamander Aliana in the Nashkel Mines could get the Atticus Finch award for courage: they kept fighting even when they knew they were "licked." The poor buggers needed Criticals to hit. And what happened once they got there glorious perfect strike in? Dead. Fireshield...

I was thinking of starting a BG1 game with a druid (with a party though, a party of druids in fact). May post more details later.

Sounds interesting. I'm looking forward to it ToV.

Best,

A.

Btw. I'm feeling well enough to play and post regularly again. I'll resume coverage of Alesia's run. However, since her progress has gotten out of sync with her journals, I'll have to do tactically oriented battle reports to catch up. Hopefully, I'll be able to journal her in BG2.

Btw II. Condolences to Grond0 and Shadow_Leech (Hope seemed promising. When you do get a character through it will be a well earned victory.)

Alesia v. Drasus & Co. (Or When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted)

One of the things I like about the Bounty Hunter kit is that it plays like its description suggests. Bounty Hunters are hunters of men. When they have time to prepare and the element of surprise on their side, they make fearsome opponents.

Alesia was at Level 4 when she took on Level 10 Bassilus and his family. Bassilus had no real chance here: the fight was over before it began.

Alesia began by setting her regular Snare just out of sight range. Then, she tossed her Special Snare at the feet of an unwary Bassilus.
Posted Image

Next, she moved in for a Backstab. Once it landed, her Special Snare went off.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Her next move was to retreat to her regular Snare and unload a Potion of Explosions en route.
Posted Image

By the time this opening ended Bassilus and his family had been essentially wiped out. Note that Bassilus is still firing his Pre-Buff trigger: he never really had a chance.

When playing with a party, Alesia takes a similar approach: she plans ahead, and tries to deal quick knockouts before her enemies can pose a threat. The Tent Battle at the Bandit Camp provides as example here.

Alesia and her party buffed, and entered the Tent invisible. Imoen, and Alesia, got in position to Backstab Venkt simultaenously. Viconia was nearby to provide additional assistance. She wasn't needed.
Posted Image
Posted Image

The mage was out of the picture before the battle had even begun. And Alesia now had an opportunity to lay down a Special Snare before others joined the fight.
Posted Image

The battle had basically entered cleanup phase and Alesia's enemies have just now become hostile. All it took was a Scorcher and a Skull Trap to finsh the job.
Posted Image

This was all that remained by the end of the opener.
Posted Image

Once again: Alesia's enemies had no chance. Her foes were not combatants: they were prey.

That's what happens when all goes right. But what about when all goes wrong: when the plan is thwarted and the element of surprise is on the opponents side? That's what happened in the Drasus fight.

Alesia's plan entailed placing herself and Imoen on the Northeast side of the battlefield. She had a reasonable but less than Ironclad plan for getting her and her sister through without being detected. Unfortunately, Kysus turned out to be cagier than expected- he withheld Detect Invisibility when it was likely to be foiled and reserved it for a time when it was likely to succeed.

Alesia was laying down Snares when it happened. Now she is the one caught off guard. That's a problem. A big problem.
Posted Image

Since Alesia hadn't prebuffed yet -and had a clouded Aura-  she was eminently vulnerable to Enchantment magics. Kysus took advantage with Confusion- catching the exposed Alesia almost immediately. This was the first -and hopefully the last- time Alesia had lost control of herself.

The plan at this point was to have Viconia tend to Alesia whie Imoen and Yarame occupied the enemies.I explained this earlier so I'll be brief here. This was what the scene looked like a few rounds in..
Posted Image

Clearly, Drasus and crew have the upper hand now.

Fortunately, by the time Drasus and pals tracked down Alesia, she was in control of herself again.
Posted Image

Ready Viccy? Let's go to work.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Drasus is resistant to Fire damage so that opening wasn't exactly devastating. It did consume some of his healing supply before the melee comat began though.

Now, at this point, Alesia is unambiguously the hunted. But she only needs one thing to turn the tables again, to get time and the element of surprise back on her side: Shadows. She broke for the Shadows beneath the elevated cabin near the Mine entrace. Viconia's job was simply to give Alesia a chance to get established there. She did her duty. But even with her Potion of Fortitude boosted Hitpoint total, she couldn't take many swings from the Hasted, Potion Buffed, Drasus. Viconia fell, but the momentum is about to shift from Drasus to Alesia.
Posted Image

The Shadows made all the difference. Alesia became a Hunter again. FIrst the Guard.
Posted Image

Then Drasus
Posted Image

Alesia is in control now. Kysus wasn't ready to give up though. Kysus: Lightning Bolt. Alesia: Potion of Insulation+ Boots of Grounding.
Posted Image

Alesia loves her potions. And she has a special hatred for those who force her to use them. Pay Kysus. Pay!
Posted Image

And a snare for your little buddy...

Posted Image

Next, your comrade.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Genthore and his axe were annoying here. But the solution was literally lying right in front of Alesia.
Posted Image

Shortly thereafter, Genthore fled. Only a guard left.
Posted Image

Fin.

Final Comments

That was a scary fight- by far the scariest in this run. Alesia hopes she won't find herself in another bloodbath like that. If she can keep time and initiative on her side, she'll be likely to get her wish.

In my install(s) it's 1/Day in BG2. In BG1, it's a limited charge item with 7 initial charges. At 21K that's 3000 per charge- not exactly a bargin...

it can be a life saver though. That can justify the cost.

Improved Invisibility is a boon no doubt. But it's the synergy between the Avengers spells and abilities that makes them really dangerous. Improved Invisibility is an important part of the equation.

Avenger druid seems fun in BG1.

Yeah. Avengers can definitely be fun in BG1. I've set aside Aliana in the interest of completing Alesia's run, but I'll get back to her eventually.

I don't think the BG1 engine can actually handle use per day items.

The Avenger may be a tad powerful in BG1, but Druids generally are underpowered. In Vanilla Clerics can cast (IIRC) all Druid spells anyway, so Druids are just bad Clerics, at least for the first few levels.

Danny ud3;

@Alesia_BH, interesting… I tend to keep my special traps for use in combat but they do make a nice opening move.

My kingdom for a horror!

My band of do-gooders ran into Nimbul… in one of my stranger fights, he stopped Ajantis from charging with ‘Enfeebled’ so Ormaline backed up and tossed a special trap at him but not quite far enough to work. Nimbul then manages to ‘Charm’ Imoen, triggering the trap and killing Imoen & himself. Neira dies without putting up much of a fight then Tranzig fulls to another special trap… the silly bugger had two wands and didn’t use them. I recruited Garrick to pickpocket Algernon then killed some spiders and delivered a letter to Mirianne.

Posted Image Posted Image

Imoen hit level 4 (100 detect illusions) and dualed to wizard so as to use up the scrolls and we started killing bandits, plus the odd druids (Osmadi and Corsone). Teven figgered we looked the sort to say yes to wanton slaughter so he escorted us to the main bandit camp.

I was happily beginning the Big surprise for my new buddys when Lamalha crashed the party. I needed my two trap piles to deal with the amazons but figgered I still had it covered then the foursome left their tent and entered the melee. In serious trouble now, we tossed out the kitchen sink and managed to take out Venkt and Hakt in a fighting withdraw but whatever loot they dropped is gone for good now. Maybe it’s just me but the regular peons put up a surprisingly spirited resistance… copious amounts of potions didn’t hurt their efforts… we didn’t have so much as a box of matches between us when we arrived at the FAI to lick our wounded pride, on the up side Danny gained a new level in the anarchy so we returned two days later buffed, invisible & packing!

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

With the bandits wiped out we drifted back to Officer Vai and rested until Danny had a new dream…

The loot remaining after expenses; 2* Wand of Fire (only 5 shots remaining between them), Wand of ‘Magic Missile’ (100), Sling +1, Algernon's cloak, ring of protection +1 *2, Wand of the Heavens (13) & can cast ‘Horror’ as my special ability thank you very much!

The Current Party Stats are;
Danny…  Sorcerer L4 (31 hp) Spells L1 = orb, identify & sleep L2 = invisible.
Ormaline… Bounty Hunter L5 (25 hp) 100 set traps & 45 pick pockets.
Imoen… Thief L4 inactive/ Mage L2 (20 hp).
Ajantis… Inquisitor L4 (32 hp).
Branwen… Cleric L4 (28 hp).
Garrick… Bard L5 (19 hp).

I often open with them because of the spell effect components. Slow is really a wonderful effect when you have a crew of thieves and casters. There is also nice synergy with classic openng spells- Web for example.

Later on, it gets even better (though the Sphere Traps are kind of a bummer...). And as you've probably noticed, Maze Traps make fantastic opening moves- Trapping and Backstabbing enemies one by one as they come out of null space can be a lot of fun...

Btw. Some may be wondering why Viconia is around. That's partly on role-playing grounds but also because she makes the Potions of Magic Protection usable. In general, they aren't very helpful since 50% resistance isn't reliable, but with Viconia's innate resistance, they can get her up to 100%. That can help.

Quick update on soloing cleric Zefahyr:
Upon escape from Candlekeep, Zefahyr traveled to Friendly Arm Inn to rest and refit. Back in Baldur’s Gate, he killed false healer Rashad and saved life of duke Eltan. In the Iron Throne palace, he defeated Cythandria and obtained diary of Sarevok. He visited Undercellar, killed Slythe and Krystin and took their invitation to Sarevok’s coronation at ducal palace.
At coronation ceremony, Zefahyr accompanied with summoned skeletons defeated doppelgangers and saved lives of both dukes.

He is currently on his way to Ulgoth’s Beard.

In my install it starts with 7 charges just when you buy it (at ~30K usually, I always have lousy CHA ), but in actual fact it's 1/day so that when you rest it resets to 1 charge (regardless of how many it had to start with). It's pretty weird behavior, but preferable to only 7 charges, I guess.
