Condolences V.

It's a shame to see Zefahyr's run end that way- he did some excellent work.

Good luck with your next run.

Cursing his own stupidity, Odrelomp staggers forth in the really quite too bright daylight, and makes his way to Durlag's Tower!

Durlag's Tower is no joke, I don't care what level you are (well.. maybe if you were level 20 or something, then you'd laugh your way through). As it stands, Odrelomp and friends decide a little prudent stocking up is in order, and promptly spend about 50000 gold on potions and magical ammunition
Posted Image

Once inside the actual tower, clearing the upper levels proceeds apace. A protected Minsc clears the roof on his own
Posted Image

We reject Kirinhale's offer (you'd have to be truly evil to go along with it, and not even xp-greedy Odrelomp can justify it). She manages a few Dire Charms before being put down, but nothing we can't dispel

Posted Image

While up here we naturally pick up the Tome of Understanding, and Odrelomp takes the opportunity to become even more wise and benevolent (as if such a thing is possible)
Posted Image

We now delve into the bowels of this cursed place, and Durlag proves he's not to be underestimated, as an accidentally triggered trap almost has fatal consequences. Odrelomp manages to save however, and dispel the Web holding nearly the entire party, at which point we swiftly put down the skeleton warrior who had been pounding us. You can see how close Dynaheir came to being a pile of chunks on the floor
Posted Image

Having cleared the level, we go into battle with the Warders. Judicious use of Animate Dead and Animal Summoning (Odrelomp has three level 4 spell slots, after all) sees us safely through it. Minsc somehow gets Charmed, but Protection from Evil prevents it from doing anything
Posted Image

Posted Image

At this point, I realize I've forgotten to pick up the two runes necessary from Ulgoth's Beard. We hastily make our way there, and since we're swimming in Potions of Master Thievery, Imoen gulps down 6 of them and relieves Dushai of her ring, which is bound to come in handy

Posted Image

Back to Durlag's, and onto the (in my case) slightly bugged level with all the doors... An early encounter with a Greater Doppleganger almost proves fatal as I become slightly overconfident and get caught in his Stinking Cloud

Posted Image

Things don't exactly improve, as I absentmindedly have Imoen swipe the contents of Kiel's chest, with the obvious result that four dwarven doomwarders turn on me..  fortunately I manage to Entangle two of them. After this fight I take a break as my concentration was really slipping

Posted Image

Down to the next level, not much of note here, though we do kill off the Greater Wyverns. Not wanting to lose the XP from killing the "heroes", we do it the oldfashion way.. skeletons and animals prove just barely up to the task of distracting the wyverns long enough for us to pelt them into oblivion
Posted Image

We're closing in on the final prize now.. the chessboard cannot stand before us, a few Potions of Explosion see to that
Posted Image

The entire next level goes by in a blur, everything falls without much trouble. I'm actually nervous about taking the Demonknight on, as the big bastard has chunked many NPC's for me in the past (Power Word: Stun followed by meele attacks, or just a fireball in some low-hp mage's head). This time we carefully prepare however, and he eventually falls, though he sure stays alive longer than I'd thought given the volume of magical ammo he's subjected to. Khalid manages to get stunned and then fireballed, but the Demonknight falls before he can finish the job
Posted Image

Huzzah, once again Odrelomp saves the day! We take Islanne up on her offer and are teleported out, where much identifying and selling occurs. Here, I would typically just forget about returning Soultaker, and go on about my merry business in Baldur's Gate. However.. Odrelomp would never leave such a despicable and dangerous being as Aec'Letec free to roam the Realms, and so, how can I? The decision is made that the demon must be destroyed. We make our way back to Ulgoth's Beard and clear out the cultist scum, then retreat and very carefully prepare our spellslots before going after the demon.

Almost every concievable buff is prepared and administered. We dive deep into our treasure trove of potions and use anything I think can give us an edge. Finally, it is time. Dreading the confrontation, but resolute that this is the way it must be, Odrelomp descends into the darkness. Tymora be with us
Posted Image

We can afford no hesitation. Every second we spend fighting the demon increases the chances of our failure, and that failure is too horrific to even contemplate. A massive barrage of explosive potions spells the end of four of the demon's traitorous cohorts, and the other two fall shortly thereafter to concentrated missile fire. In the meantime Minsc has lost half his hitpoints holding the beast off, but is relieved as we can now call for aid. The call is answered: Even the dead and the beasts of the land wish this evil destroyed
Posted Image

The battle rages on. Minsc takes another few hits, but retreats and allows our wildlife allies to take the brunt of the demon's attacks. We bring every single thing we have to bear: Arrows of the most lethal enchantments imagineable, magics that should never have been concieved, powerful weapons unearthed from dungeons where they have rested for millenia.. all waiting for this day, this glorious day when one halfling and his loyal comrades stood up to the ultimate evil, horror incarnate. On and on we battle for what feels like hours, but is in reality only rounds. Odrelomp and Dynaheir weave their mighty spells until their throats grow hoarse. And then...
Posted Image

Victory! We have VICTORY! Tymora has truly smiled upon us, as the vile Aec'Letec is destroyed and forced to return to his native plane. The party nearly collapses in exhaustion, but soon breaks out in smiles and laughter. It is not a fairy-tale world we live in. There is always evil to be fought. But here, in this village, on this day, Good fought Evil, and came out ahead. Today is a good day.

That night, everyone in Ulgoth's Beard celebrates. Minsc does his impersonation of Elminster, Dynaheir puts on a magical fireworks display, and Odrelomp once again loses the customary drinking contest
Posted Image

Odrelomp is now a level 8 cleric.
Posted Image

I can tell you, I was genuinely worried taking on Aec'Letec. But what good character could leave such an Evil unchallenged? I even did a little dance after he went down...

Last entry: Ceawen's adventure

Chapter 7 continued

Unfortunately Imoen permanently died in the second underground level of Durlag's tower  to an undetectable lightning trap.
Posted Image
Ceawen blamed himself and decided to leave Durlag's and go on to finish Sarevok and end his adventuring career after that.
They went back to Baldur's Gate, getting arrested and shamefully get helped by a child murderer (roleplaying a Paladin probably means ending the game here, but nontheless Ceawen is going on and hunts him down later).
They only did the Balduran's Helmet quest before killing Cythandria and Krystin and Slythe.

Ceawen almost fell as a Paladin when they saved Belt and Liia shortly after.

Posted Image
They had Nymphs on their side which cast Mental Domination on a Doppelgänger which had been confused. The Doppelgänger killed a guard which resulted in -10rep and everything getting hostile except Belt and Liia. Not enough madness? They both killed every non-doppelgänger in the palace.
Luckily this didn't end the game and the party went on to the Undercity after buying a few potions.
Posted Image
They all chugged potions and had a pretty easy time with Sarevok. With Greater Malison and Doom he got charmed and held. And killed. -End

Posted Image

Note: This is the last time i play BG1 without SCS, which i got too used to. Also this is the second Cavalier i no-reloaded BG1 with. :)

Quick update on Spicy. He's been very cautious so far - in the main picking up XP from things that can't fight back. Shoot and run has been favourite tactic to date, although he's increasingly now attacking with his staff (now has 2* in 2-handed weapons so has weapon speed of 0, which means that he can attack most enemies and retreat before they can reply). Only slight glitch in his plans to date was that he failed to save the cow from attacking xvarts - he forgot to take armour off in order to sleep them and was just too slow in finishing them off. Currently at the gnoll stronghold - levels Fighter 4 / Mage 4 / Thief 5.

Sorry for your loss, you seem really good with clerics though. I like using the chest trap against the wolfwere, that was something out of the box :)

Vorn, part 3.

It takes several journeys before we manage to send all the gnolls to sleep. I cast armour and say hello to Shar Teel. I manage to blind her first time and after blanking me twice she eventually concedes to my bullets (plan b was to try the girdle of gender with plan c involving Kagain).
Posted Image

Ooze goes into my backpack as we blind bullet Gnarl and Hairtooth. We retrieve a magical tome (leadership) and head north. A winter wolf ambush almost kills Shar Teel but we escape. I blind bullet a huge bear for Jared before doing the same with two cave bears that ambush us.

Thalantyr identifies the tome for me, then we kill a few wolves and temporarily rescue Melicamp until Thalantyr fails to restore him. RIP Melicamp.

Three sleepy gnolls yield a short sword which we return to Perdue after blind scorching an assassin called Karlat. Greywolf, Caldo and Krumm all experience blinding death too.

Shar Teel kills Vax while Ooze makes a brief appearance to distract Zal. She moves on to Vax, then we rest before finding Sendai of Amn. After a brief struggle we run away to lick our wounds. Mark my words Sendai, your time will come.

Emerson asks how I intend to clear his mine of trouble. Here's how.
Posted Image

We recover a ring near a mangled corpse, and although I found a knock spell I failed to memorise it. We look at the mangled corpse again, return to the surface and tell Emerson we will be back WHEN WE FEEL LIKE IT. That told him, and it felt good; so what if I was standing behind Shar Teel at the time.

I can't be bothered to find a thief (doing an evil run without Monty/Xzar for once) so grab the next best thing. No, really.
Posted Image

After the worlds shortest caravan quest we return to Nashkel. Shar Teel breaks down a door and returns Josephs ring. We kill a couple of basilisks so Shar Teel can adapt herself to our next challenge.
Posted Image

We return to Beregost where I spare very little cash to buy her the cheapest armour and crossbow we can find.

I'm withdrawing Vorn - recruited Ajantis/Kivan (and changed them to neutral) before doing a killing spree to have them fallen. Result was that they both kept their status at reputation 4 so messed the game up (think I'm right in saying Kivan leaves and Ajantis attacks if left as lawful).

Might try a fallen run next, just for fun.

Spicy came to an end. After belatedly getting ring of free action and green amulet from Ulgoth's Beard he should have been safer, but was immediately ambushed by Molkar and co. Initially all of them were held in a web and I probably could have used wand of frost to cut them down to size quickly, but was trying to protect their items. Only one was dead when Halacan hasted everyone and Molkar immediately landed a heavy blow. At that point I thought I should retreat off the edge of the board, which I expected to be safe enough as I had kept close to it. However, Molkar's extra hasted attack seems to trigger almost immediately and another swipe was enough to send Spicy to an early grave.

I knew I wouldn't be able to play without risks! Ambushed and surrounded by magic users the safe course would have been to leave immediately and return later when prepared (or at least use a potion of invisibility to get a breathing space). C'est la mort.

Quick Note on Ashanti's Game:

Hooray! Ashanti the Beastmaster has completed her BGI No Reload.
Posted Image

This was a really quick run so I guess I'll just summarize the entire thing in a single post. I'll take care of that relatively soon.

I intend to let Ashanti give BGII a whirl. I don't expect her to make it, but it may be interesting nonetheless.

Best,

A.

Btw. One of the thing's that really pleased me about this run is that Ashanti didn't have to recharge any limited use items (Wands, Necklace, Greenstone Amulet). That's something I intended to forbid in BG runs but I was concerned it would pose problems. It worked out fine- at least for Ashanti.

Ashanti's Sword Coast Vacation Photos

Free Action, innate strength, and 0 Speed Factor attacks with a Range 2 melee weapon were all it took to end Mulahey.
Posted Image

Will a little help from Winston -and well chosen Potions from her Winter Wolf Bag- Ashanti completed the Tent Battle with ease.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Despite needing Criticals to land, the Bandits outside, weren't so easy to pacify. Potion of Invisibility-> Heal was Ashanti's saving grace here.
Posted Image
Posted Image

To conserve Potions of Freedom, Ashanti tripped Web Traps invisible. She was held, bu never attacked.
Posted Image

Potion Buffs foiled Davaeorn. Ashanti's long, quick Stave made the Battle Horror's easy pickings.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Ashanti was afraid of Slythe. Slythe should have been afraid of Ashanti.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

To conserve Potions, Ashanti rushed to the Duchal Palace as soon as Kristin fell. There was no need to rebuff.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Ashnati felled Sarevok by following Alia's play book. Once again, Diarmid was the only vaguely threatening foe- even managing to dispel Ashant's buffs. Potion of Invisibility-> Rebuff was the solution.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Posted Image
Sarevok never had a chance to touch Ashanti in melee. Don't underestimate the merits of a quick Stave with a good reach.

Fin!

A.

Ashanti will continue on to BGII. WIsh her luck: She may need it.......

congrats again Alesia! You've seem to have mastered this game....

Sorry for your loss Grond0 and Gate70.

As for myself I've placed my fighter dualed to a thief on hold. In any case I started multiple games with several characters, I've even started two in BG2(a monk and a kensai). I'm still not sure which one I want to focus on, but all of them seem like good starting points. I think I'll call it a day now.

Thanks. I'm starting to get a feel for Warriors I think. The thing that worries my in BGII is that Ashanti won't have access to many of the weapons that offer immunities. And with SCS-II mages dispelling potion buffs, I don't expect Ashanti's adventures in Amn to last very long. We'll see.

Alesia can you run through what buffs you have, say against Slythe. I rarely use potions (not essential in a party game) so would be helpful to know.

Sure. Against Slythe and Kristin she used: a Potion of Mind Focusing, a Potion of Fire Resistance, a Potion of Insulation, a Potion of Cold Resistance, a Potion of Magic Shielding, a Potion of Power, a Potion of Defense, a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, an Oil of Speed, and a Potion of Regeneration. That was topped of with Draw on Holy Might.

Slythe was dropped before landing anything, His error was that he used his Aura to drink a Potion of Freedom instead of a Potion of invisibility and was exposed for a round. He got beaten over the head with a Quarterstaff and hit with a Potion of Firebreath. He didn't survive the round.

What did Kristin cast?

Kristin didn't have many options due to Ashanti's pre-buffs. She went with Animate Dead, and then Skull Trap. Unfortunately for her, she took out her own Skeletons with the Skull trap. Ashanti made her save of course due to her Potion of Magic Shielding and didn't take much damage. Whatever damage she did take was healed by the Regen Potion before the fight ended.

Kristin was dropped with Arrow of Dispelling-> Arrows of Cold (or Biting not sure which...)

Best,

A.

Hmm ok, sounds like the scripting is pretty sub-optimal.

Do any SCS mages cast Remove Magic in your install? Do you have the option for them to cast only BG1 spells?

Yeah. That should have been a tough fight for Ashanti.

In other battles, Slythe went invisible immediately, and made a nuisance of himself. I'm not sure why he opted to use the Potion of Freedom while visible this time. I was surprised.

Of course, some degree of randomization makes sense. in this case, Slythe didn't look terribly bright though.

Do any SCS mages cast Remove Magic in your install?

I haven't seen it. Of course, for a BG1 M/T it would be a bit of a gamble. And while it would have been the right move in this case, in most circumstances investing Skull Traps in Level 3 would make sense.

Best,

A.

I'm not certain. I set up this install quite awhile ago on a Windows machine. I haven't fiddled with it since porting it to OS X. All of the spell tweaks, creature improvements, and battle improvements are installed- that I'm certain of. I'm not certain whether BG2 spells are available to enemy mages. They haven't made a prominent appearance at least. I'll check my Weidu log.

That's a lot of potions...

I was getting fed up with inventory management anyway, better go get containers/stacking installed.
