The spiders are tough but I like them. The only issue is the Phase Spiders who pop up whenever you enter their area. I'm thinking of making a custom revised version of that component so that they only do that within a certain radius or something, since having a pair of them drop on your head from just entering the spider area of Cloakwood is a bit harsh (and also they then won't be where they're meant to be).ussnorway wrote...

That might be interesting. I'd be curious to see what you can get out of the class.
I started a Monk, Alai, in BG1 a little while ago. She was fun in the early game. However, I abandoned her when I started worrying about movement rate issues. The Monk movement rate is wonderful at outset but at 5 they can't be Hasted anymore and they aren't all that fast at level 9. Without Dispelling Arrows, I could see that becoming a problem solo.
Anyhoo. Good luck with your next run- whatever you choose.

The Boots of Speed do work, IIRC. A monk that I soloed through BG1 was just able to outrun Sarevok and exploited the pillars in the throne room to HiS and "backstab". As I recall, the most difficult encounter in that game was actually Slythe since his backstabs are absolutely brutal.Alesia_BH wrote...

I'm not sure if I levelled up past the EXP cap though, so YMMV.

Yes - I think I've mentioned before you have a really strong ability to focus. I find myself constantly struggling between the desire to complete a game and a wish to achieve sub-objectives. Sometimes these just consume time (like exploring the whole map even if I know there's nothing significant there), but sometimes also they consume resources or add an unnecessary risk. Having said that I definitely think I'm overdue for a success in BG1 so will be trying hard to focus this time with my new monk.Alesia_BH wrote...
As you probably noticed, in my solos, I tended to stay close to the main storyline. That was partly on role-playing grounds, but partly in the interest of conserving potions. By minimizing conflicts that might require key potions, I could count on having everything I might want for the key storyline battles. That kept my characters safe.

It's a long time since I did it and I'm not sure what mods I had running, but I remember that Sarevok was definitely faster than my monk, but not enough so to prevent me hiding behind pillars in the way you describe.AnonymousHero wrote...

That would make all the difference. If the Boots work, the Monk will work.

Historically, I hadn't feared Slythe- the battle felt anticlimactic to me. Alia's run changed that. He was scary. Really, really scary. I view that battle as a significant hurdle now.

Sadly, Uvarynel died at the hands of Neira in Nashkel. As usually, I stopped to pay attention and Uvarynel was successfully Held.
Knucklear has just completed her planned opening. After Candlekeep headed straight to Beregost and then worked in the areas you can reach with 0 hour travelling to avoid ambushes. Pacifying Marl and helping Firebead got her first level. Sanitising a spider infestation and removing Karlat got her second. Karlat gave her the opportunity to practice her hiding behind pillars - probably she should have gone to get the boots of steath first.
A bit harder work then with the south Beregost area being cleaned. Mainly sling work, but a couple of hobgoblin archers were kicked from cover. A bit cheesily she stuck to the edge of the area in confronting the mercenary after Viconia in order to be able to jump away to avoid spells. The temple area encounters, with the exception of the vampiric wolf pack, were enough for level 4. Up to now nothing has even managed to attack her, let alone do any damage.
Unlike my other characters monks are given the luxury of maximum HP on level up. I justify this on the basis that the monk is essentially a martial class and therefore I think they should be able to benefit from higher constitution bonuses. Knucklear therefore now has 40 HP, which is enough to give a degree of comfort about letting her travel where there is a risk of ambushes.

In Nashkel a spot of hiding in and out of the door set up Neira for the kill. Also stopped a baby wyvern running amok before resting to get first Bhaal power. Then back north to put down an ogre with a belt fetish. Also killed Xzar and Montaron - it appears that monks can't use potion of speed at all (even before 5th level). Tarnesh was clubbed down from behind.
Back south to the carnival to pick up a potion of giant strength to break open the box in Gullykin that has a potion case. Also bought a few other emergency potions, amulet of shielding and necklace of missiles with the money from the ring of wizardry. After Gullykin time to crack on and take on the Nashkel mines. Greywolf took a potion of freedom rather than speed, which made him easy meat for Knuclear's sling and provided level 5. Ploughed through the kobolds in the mine, using fireballs on the chief / shaman and Mulahey's reinforcements. Mulahey himself was dealt with by dodging in and out of the cave. He was stunned once, but not for long enough to finish him off.
With another drain life Bhaal power in the bag Knuclear then started improving her reputation:
- saved Samuel
- returned Joia's ring
- helped excavate a tomb. Had well over 30 backstabs on the doomsayer, but only hit once and eventually gave it up as a bad job and just got a lift home with Brage
- received acclamation from town for dealing with mines (Nimbul was disposed of by guards)
- rewarded by Prism
- helped with some babysitting
- rescued a drowned cat
- saved a dryad's tree
- rescued a boy from some starving wolves
- gained a shield from Bjornin
In among that lot I also reunited Rufie with his owner to get level 6, retrieved a tome of charisma and protected a traveller from a bear. Now with reputation 20 and funds in the bank next stop is Ulgoth's Beard.

@ ussnorway: What bugs have you seen with SCS characters pre-buffing?
Sorry I missed this question until now.
The biggest problem I've found is that traps trigger first i.e. before the pre-buff & that often means that the trap damage gets ignored.
I play a lot of thief classes and any thing that bugs out my traps eg. improved vampires gets dropped from my install list... having said that, SCS (1&2) are very good mods.

I haven't seen them actually attacking invisible targets in my setup. The phase spiders did immediately phase to CHARNAME though(*), invisible or not. One of the reasons I don't play with improved spiders any more.
(*) I only play solo, so I cannot tell how their targeting works. Anyway, the point is the "invisibility" thing...

Baldur’s gate was a profitable experience, we started by raiding the airship plans (much to the disgust of Ajantis) then we pilfered a scope from the hall of wonders and settled up with the thieves' guild… I let Black Lily live.
We killed two rapist to save their captive nymph, retrieved a boys body so daddy could resurrect him, gave Brilla her sons pin, won a knock down- stand up bar fight at the ‘helm and cloak’, delivered a necklace to Euric, helped Aldeth sort out his guild, tracked down two items allegedly belonging to Balduran, slaughtered the doppelgangers and sanitized the sewers.
We have now come full circle… retuned to fine that something is rotten in Candle keep.
The loot; Helm of Balduran, cloak of Balduran, necklace of missiles *2, Ring of free action, +1 dexterity, +1 wisdom, +1 intelligence (Imoen), robe of the evil archmagi, ring of wizardry, dagger of venom, Gauntlets of Weapon Skill, robe of the good archmagi, Gorion’s amulet, Nymph cloak, Large shield +1, +4 vs. missiles & Gauntlets of Ogre Power… all my wands are fully recharged in preparation for candle keep.

With the green amulet now available went back to the lighthouse area and dealt with the sirenes and then flesh golems - this provided level 7. Bassilus copped a stunning blow to help refill Knucklear's purse before trying, and failing, to revive Melicamp. Did buy a few useful items from Thalantyr, including a ioun stone to cut out the chance of an annoying critical. A bit more shopping at the carnival saw the end of Zordral - victim of hide and run tactics - while Vitiare failed to recover from a stunning blow.
Back to the main story and Tranzig also failed to see Knucklear sneaking up on him. Then went up to the Friendly Arm en route to the bandit camp and was ambushed by the amazons. I felt that they should be able to be tackled as they wouldn't have many spells that could hurt me and duly took them out one by one. Then got a lift from Teven to the bandit camp. Trying to take out the mage first by attacking from cover made him flee out of the tent, which turned everyone outside hostile. Took quite a while, but running, hiding and shooting eventually finished the lot of them (fortunately I had recently purchased a bag of plenty so had endless ammunition) and the remaining characters in the tent were no challenge after that. The funds from the camp were not quite enough for the ring of invisibility, so sold the wand of sleep - other posters seem to find this useful, but it only affects very low level monsters in my setup, e.g. wild dogs, so is useless at this stage of the game anyway.
After the exertions of the bandit camp just sneaked through the cloakwood to the mines. Drew Drasus away and killed him with the help of potion of absorption. The mages were killed with various forms of fire while using horn of Kazgoroth for protection. In the mines themselves I decided my stats weren't good enough to try and get through by sneaking as the chance of getting trapped was too high. Hence had a long stint of working through guards gradually with rests as necessary. Hareishan chased me a long way, but ultimately to her cost. I didn't really have anything which could hurt Daveorn as he is so resistant to fire and didn't fancy meleeing against the battle horrors. Therefore buffed up against all spells and used bullets to wear away his stoneskins. Only danger was when he cast a chromatic orb through a wall at a time when potion of invulnerability had just run out. Once out of spells he was finished off without problem. Also during the fight Knuclear capped her levels against a jelly while waiting for a mirror image to wear off.
Just arrived in the city - that shouldn't take too long as Knuclear won't be doing many side quests.

For some reason I thought the dopplegangers would not follow into the caves and just ran past them all - big mistake.

Even with potions of defence and giant strength up she clearly wouldn't last long in that situation, so popped back into the tombs area and outdistanced all the normal dopplegangers to face just the greater one. This was a difficult battle - it was spamming haste and mirror image and the only way to hurt it was to hope a blow hit the doppleganger rather than an image. Eventually a couple of blows did land, but I can already see that Knuclear has precisely zero chance of getting through the palace fight using conventional tactics. With the greater one dead Knuclear finished off the other dopplegangers without too much trouble.
With the magic protection still up she also fought the party there, though she had to use a number of healing potions and 2 regenerations in the process. With all dead, but one mage who was reluctant to show his face Knucklear took time out to clear the way of spiders before having a final check of Sakul. This time he did appear and Knucklear was about to finish him off when her magic protection finally expired. No problem - quickly gulp down a potion of magic shielding. Well, just a slight problem as Sakul instantly dispelled that and then proceeded to hit her with a range of damaging spells - more valuable healing potions down the drain before she finally landed the killing blow. By this time she had had more than enough fighting for one day and sneaked the rest of the way out of the caves and back to the city.

Danny died in the caverns beneath candle keep. Basically got gang raped by two spiders whilst the rest of the party dealt with Prat & Co. I’m going to role up a druid for my next attempt, probably go with Auramaster but the slow decent into madness with the ooze kit also appeals in my present state of mind, still it was my fault for parking him at the back (Invisible & on control script)… pilot error!

Exactly, I imagine that low wisdom is the reason for his chaotic neutral alignment. On the negative side, his Lore ability quite suffers.
Update on Oryvanus, soloing half-elven Bard:
After death of Gorion, Oryvanus traveled to High Hedge. He explored the area, killing some Gnolls and huge spider in the process. From High Hedge, Oryvanus headed to Beregost. He calmed Marl and completed various available quests: fetching book to Firebead Elvenhair, bringing Mirianne letter from her husband, and finding missing boots of stealth for Zhurlong. Luckily, Oryvanus managed to defeat assassin Karlat and returned Perdue her lost sword.

In Beregost temple, Oryvanus was told about mad cleric Bassilus. He defeated Cattack and his hobgoblins and headed north. On the way to Friendly Arm Inn, Oryvanus defeated Ogre with Belt fetish and talked to strange man in red robes. In FAI, Oryvanus found ring for Joia and decided to travel south to Nashkel. In Nashkel, Oryvanus cheated Oublek, who had mistaken him for Greywolf.
He is currently level 4 Bard with meager 19HP.

I'm having another crack at a Cleric/Ranger. I've opted for party play rather than a solo run as I'm still new to the SCS mod. Playing with my otherwise normal set up - core difficulty, max hps on level up, a bag of holding, widescreen + easyTutu.
After leaving Candlekeep, Cordelia & Imoen travelled to the town of Beregost. They spent almost 2 weeks exploring the surrounding regions, vanquishing monsters and helping the needy. In a tavern one evening, the pair are attacked by the bounty hunter Karlat, and kill him in self defence. Cordelia discovers a note on the assailant's corpse and learns there is a bounty on her head. Imoen and Cordelia agree that is it perhaps time to seek out the friends that Gorion had mentioned.
Our heroes made their way north in search of the Friendly Arm Inn. They arrived weary and looking for a bed for the night but were confronted outside by a second bounty hunter, Tarnesh. Cordelia was unable to reason with him and so cast Command on the mage before he could attack. She and Imoen proceeded to make short work of him, and found on his posession a second note detailing the bounty notice.
Cordelia and her companion spent a day at the Inn, where they met Khalid & Jaheira. Gorion's old friends agree to travel with Cordelia and watch over her for a time. They encourage her to accompany them south to the town of Nashkel, where they intend to investigate the iron shortage.
The journey south was brief and uneventful; the two extra fighters ensured safe passage. On arriving at the Nashkel inn, the party were attacked by another bounty hunter, Neira. Cordelia acted quickly and put the priest to sleep, allowing an easy kill.
The following day, Khalid and Jaheira allow Cordelia and Imoen to look around the region, while they meet with the mayor of Nashkel and plan their next move.
Current character info:

(using the same portrait as my last character's - I didn't get enough mileage out of it! Also swapped out Imoen's portrait)
Cordelia's weapon proficiencies are War Hammer ++ , Sling ++ and Two Weapon Style ++.
Imoen is currently a level 4 thief with 32hp.
Khalid a level 4 fighter with 44hp.
Jaheira, level 4/4 fighter/druid with 36hp.

- Sneaked back to save Duke Eltan. Fortunately the greater doppleganger cast horror at Knucklear as I had not realised the green amulet was not operating and its confusion on touch ability would almost certainly have killed her. After that the ability to hide around doorways made killing it easy.
- Cythandria was a bit more difficult because of the need to avoid the Iron Throne party and separate her from the golems. However, having done this Knucklear's buffs should have left her an easy victory. In fact it was more difficult than I expected because of magic missiles

She had the shield amulet on, but I think what happened is that she also took a potion of defence and this must use the same coding and hence overwrote the protection against magic missiles. Fortunately the only long-term damage was the need to use more healing potions than I expected.
- Next up was Slythe, which I was fearing. I successfully separated him from Krystin, but the speed of his attacks was such that he often got in not just a backstab, but another attack as well before I could respond. This tended to put Knucklear within 1 hit of death, which was a bit nerve-wracking. However, after use of immense numbers of healing and regeneration potions she managed to finish him off.
- Krystin refused to appear while Knucklear had protection from magic up and she thus had to use alternative buffs, but there was never likely to be a problem there beyond the cost of more potions.
- At the palace I had decided I had no chance in a conventional battle, so separated the dopplegangers by heading upstairs. Four of them followed and managed to trap Knucklear, but she gulped (a potion, not in horror) and disappeared. Though still trapped, she took the opportunity to buff up and then threw a well-placed fireball from her necklace in order to avoid innocent bystanders. This was more effective than I expected and 3 of the 4 dopples started running in panic - making finishing them off easy.

- Downstairs the guards looked to have the last 2 well in hand and I let them get on with it. However, one of them panicked and then disappeared. After searching everywhere I concluded it must have gone past where Belt was standing and charmed him out of the way in order to get down into the basement (where I found and killed the last one).
- Stealth abilities were useful in the maze against the skeleton warriors and Knucklear also sneaked past the Undercity party. Tamoko was talked into leaving and Knucklear has just arrived in the temple. Looking at the potions that Tazok has quaffed it looks like an early assault on him with her fists is not going to be an option

Oryvanus traveled to Nashkel, visited Carnival, and learned about problems in Nashkel mines. He helped artist Prism against bountyhunter Greywolf and returned with emeralds to Oublek in Nashkel.

Oryvanus visited High Hedge and purchased many spells from Thalantyr. Then, he found Melicamp and helped him regain his human form. He defeated Half-Ogres who badly mauled paladin Bjornin, exterminated pack of dangerous wolves hunting near Beregost temple, cleared spider-infested house in Beregost, and headed north.
In FAI, Oryvanus defeated assassin Tarnesh and collected reward from gnome Landrin. He helped priestess Tenya living near Wyrm Crossing against Talosian fishermen.

Oryvanus briefly visited Durlag’s Tower, killed two Battle Horrors outside, helped succubus Kirinhale to regain freedom and killed Riggilo.

Oryvanus defeated mage Zordral Carnival and assassin Neira in Nashkel.
He is currently level 7 Bard with 30HP.
