Reductio's campaign came to an end rather quicker than I expected!  He had just reached level 5 and the party was in the process of looting the pirate treasure cave.  I let a golem chase Imoen out of the cave with the intention of shooting it up, but a carrion crawler respawned in the area where most of the party would have lurked so they started moving further afield.  At some point the AI decided that as the route was momentarily blocked it would be a good idea for 2 of the characters to turn around and walk straight into the golem's arms.  Before I realised the danger Reductio had been 1-shot criticalled and it was game over.
Posted Image

I can't say I had really identified with him as a character anyway.  I'm not sure if that was because I didn't like the party mechanics or the use of shadow-keeper to generate him, but I don't have any desire to restart him.  Time for a bit of real work now and then I'll think about a possible new character.

George, TN human male kensai.

We can see the bandit camp on our map but cannot work out how to reach it. Into Peldvale then, but four bandits and three Black Talon Elites force us to retreat. We manage to find another way into the bandit camp (east of Ajantis).

Almost immediately we have to run, with two arrows hurting me badly. Khalid occupies the archers when we return, only for Ardenor Crush to pick on me (critical hit, 26 damage). Khalid intervenes and we kill Ardenor, but our wounds are mounting up and Khalid is in danger of dying too. We flee again.

Taugosz Khosann and his bandits force another retreat. We return buffed and confident, only for me to get badly wounded and Khalid pulped. I grab his body and we flee for a temple.

(this is not going well)

No problem- I'm used to itPosted Image and didn't really have much invested in the character anyway.

I was looking at alternatives for another run last night, but couldn't decide, so I'm currently in the middle of constructing a random character generator in Excel.  I remember doing this before, but think that version must have been lost when my previous computer died.

One more visit, and we kill a bandit before retreating again. We sneak in and kill Credus and his bandits while Taugosz is elsewhere, then we buff and enter the largest tent.

Khalid occupies Raemon and Britik while the rest of us doom and kill Venkt. Hakt has poisoned me so I attack him next, leaving the poison active. My first blow is decisive.
Posted Image

Britik is chasing Imoen and Jaheira so I hit him next.
Posted Image

I have to ask Jaheira to cure some wounds then return. The poison is still active but I manage to kill Raemon too - all four falling to my sword.
Posted Image

The poison wears off while I'm looting their corpses. Khalid yelps as a trap fires an electric bolt into his boots and out through his helmet. We rest outside where Khalid decides he'd like another round with Taugosz. Can't wait (will have to as that's it for today).

Entering Trilogy No-Reload Challenge:

Hi all! My Candar run finished, so entering challenge with this character. I got a 96! I rarely get such a good roll and only rolled for a couple of minutes. I usually settle for 88 (really).

Zallon
Human Male Fighter
Neutral Evil
STR 18/90
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 18
WIS 18
CHA 6

Proficiencies:
Large Sword ++
Bow ++

I intend to take the evil/neutral characters with me this run. Will have to watch my reputation. I also intend to dual to a mage at level 9 in SoA.

EDIT: Oops forgot to mention my setup. Vanilla BG 1, official ToTSC patch, ToTSC, PC, No mods

Wish me luck, and good luck to everyone else's runs!

Sorsha day 97

@corey_russell, Welcome and good luck!... just your standard game?

Tip; the Wizard Slayer kit makes a surprisingly good mage.

I transferred my save successfully (mostly) - I lost some plot items Imoens’ artefact, Ajantis’ shield and the amulet that gets you into Entar's Estate… annoying but not game breaking. Superior firepower allowed us to push deep into the cloakwoods.
Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Davaeorn proved himself a nuisance (immune to fire?) but he was no match for our Nymph… his death opens the gates to Baldur and grants a new power to Sorsha.
Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I encountered a curious little Gnome named Quayle* and we stopped by the Sorcerous Sundries for a spot of shopping.
Posted Image

*Quayle was originally supposed to be a Thief- Illusionist before the powers that be decided to make him a cleric instead but I like (& play) him as arcane.

Character notes I removed the armour restriction from Sorsha because I now believe that the ability to wear robes instead of leather is actually an advantage… thinking ahead to BG2 and the robe of vecna.

Adventures of Zallon & Gang: Part 1

Zallon helped a few people at Candlekeep - not to help them but in hopes of some kind of reward. Everyone gave him something except that girl that lost her book and the guy with the sick cow. Cheapskates!

Nevertheless, Zallon left Candlekeep and Gorion was killed after he ordered Zallon to run. Imoen found him so the two of them picked up the stuff  by Gorion and met two somewhat shady characters. They offered potions so Zallon let him in for now. Considering Imoen is Zallon's friends and these new guys aren't he ordered Montaron to give up his short sword and studded leather to Imoen. Zallon guessed Montaron should have something to fight with and gave Montaron his dagger.

When we got to Friendly Arm Inn there was an assassin. The fighters attacked (after Zallon used his clarity potion) while Xzar fired off a larloch's minor drain and Imoen used the magic missile wand she "acquired" from Candlekeep. The assassin died instantly. Zallon decided the two new guys just didn't fit his group and kicked them out.

Imoen and Zallon sold their junk (including a wizard's ring) and Zallon upgraded to plate armor. Next they went to Pelvale but of course when they did this happened:
Posted Image

Zallon thought, hmm maybe we could get some practice in, so they concentrated on the Worg. Well, Zallon's long sword broke, giving him the only melee weapon he has is a staff which he isn't skilled with. Imoen also got badly hurt. Zallon decided to call the better part of valor and ran away. They managed to escape without anyone dieing.

Next, they found a drow cleric being falsely accussed. Zallon gulped a haste potion and started shooting with his bow at the Flaming Fist. The Flaming Fist came after him (of course) and Zallon ran some more, shoot, run, shoot, till the Fist died. Somehow everyone knows of this action though only my party are the witnesses. The drow cleric joined us. She is too weak to wear the plate mail, so she is wearing splint mail and a large shield and we headed back to Friendly Arm Inn.

There was a lady at the Inn who said she would put a good word for us if we could get her ring back from some goblins. Our money is good right now (8.6k) so we went ahead and killed the goblins with our bows/sling. No problem, other than we couldn't loot everything. Sold our junk and got back on the road just South of Friendly Arm Inn.

Well that turned into more of a major project than I was expectingPosted Image.  I could have just about finished BG1 in the time it took to create a random character generator (all those nested if statements).  Even at that it was difficult in Excel to model all the possible permutations so I've ended with the following:

Gender - random
Race - random (including a 1% chance each of drow and tiefling races, which would need shadowkeeper to implement)
class - random (multi-class can't be kitted, but humans have a chance of kit on either, but not both, of their classes - need shadowkeeper to implement if second class is kitted)
Ability scores - partly random, though final results will often be similar to what I might get anyway
Alignment - randomly determined separately after class is known
Weapon skills - not done randomly

The character rolled (it's intended to be a solo challenge) is a human mage due to dual-class to fighter (both true class).
Posted Image

I did consider at an earlier stage whether I should randomly determine the level at which dualling would take place, but decided this should be left as an in-game decision.  Does anyone have any experience or advice on the best level for a mage to dual to a fighter - should this be done early to maximise HPs or late to maximise spell abilities (I would have no issue about playing the whole of BG1 as a mage, but would want to be able to get mage abilities back before spellhold in BG2 at the latest)?

@Grond0: I think the real answer is which spells do you want your mage/fighter to have? If you want stoneskin you want 9, if you just want mirror image you can do 3, if you wanted minor globe of invulnerability do 7, etc.

Obviously, the earlier you dual then more the HP you will have too.

Btw, Grond0, I find it amusing that MY character is a fighter dualing to mage (and he won't even dual until SoA), yet your character is a mage dualing to a fighter!

Having even two mage levels will allow your fighter to cast from scrolls, but dualing early can be a bit pointless. It's much better to dual when you have IA(Improved Alacrity) and that's in BG2 territory, at least that is when I'd dual if I were playing in a party game.

I'll be joining this challenge once again with my own little twist. I'll be playing a party game this time but I have chosen the classes and distributed the proficiency points...etc. The rules are that all my characters will have 10 for each of their respective stat. And they must have 10, this essentially bans any class that may not have a minimum of 10. I chose ten because it seems like a pretty average number. As for the party members, here they are

Rachel human female chaotic neutral
fighter

Stella half-elf female chaotic neutral
fighter/mage

Aloren elf male chaotic neutral
fighter/mage

Tyrian halfling male chaotic neutral
fighter/thief

Kanan Half-elf male chaotic neutral
fighter/cleric

Sarah Half-elf female chaotic neutral
fighter/thief

I'd like to call it Game of Tens obviously a reference to Game of Thrones however I guess Average Joe Challenge can suffice. I'm not sure whether it is a challenge or if it is even possible at least for me. I did not like leaving points on the board, that was probably the first time I disliked doing something in a challenge.

Edit: The ten portion only applies to the generation of the character not ingame, so statistics are allowed to change/fluctuate ingame.

Thanks for the input Corey and ShadowLeech.  I don't think I can leave dualling long enough to get mage HLAs.  That would imply playing parts of the game towards the end of SoA that I've never even seen with a fairly low level fighter - a bit too much of a challenge for me I think!  My instinct says to dual early and keep those HPs, but I think that's because I'm generally more comfortable playing fighter types.  I think I should aim to be a true dual-class, so will look to change at level 8 or 9 (that's assuming the big if of finishing BG1).

One of the ironies of using random generationPosted Image.  While I was waiting to see if anyone responded to my query about dualling levels I rolled up a couple of parties with the generator.  Both interesting mixes, though unbalanced in different ways.
#1 - Thief, Fighter/Illusionist, Assassin, Bard, Fighter/Mage/Thief, Swashbuckler.
#2 - Illusionist, Sorceror, Cleric, Cleric/Mage, Druid, Transmuter.
I've also been surprised about the extent to which the random element of my ability score generator has required compromises, so that a number of the characters have had to go with low scores on stats I would normally maximise (str, dex and con).  There's a strange mixture of being pleased that it's working well and frustrated that I'm ending up with stats that I would normally just press re-roll onPosted Image.

Btw Grond0 realized my response to you was slightly flawed - namely stoneskin and minor globe of invulnerability are both level 4 mage spells so you only need to be level 7 for those. So my revised statemetn is you might want to be 9 to dual so you can use phantom blade. : )

I'd probably go for something like L12 (Imp. Haste) or L10 (Spell Immunity). Even with 1 slot at L12 or L10 you could gain an extra casting via the "mage rings". I don't think the EXP requirements for that would be too outrageous.

You don't need the improved haste spell. There a couple of items that grant improved haste, arbane's sword if I remember right and also the gauntlets that drop off the Kua-toa Prince.

Thanks for the further advice.  Looking at this I also suspect that ShadowLeech was referring to improved haste rather than improved alacrity, so perhaps I should be trying to go for that.

However, I've just had a bit of a setback.  Ester had been quietly accumulating experience in the south and was well on the way to level 6 when she tried to take on Bassilus.  She successfully interrupted 6 or 7 spells with wand of cold / magic missile, although his consumption of extra healing potions meant he was still just standing.  As he started another spell Ester was out of her own magic missiles and didn't want to use the wand (which would destroy his items), but had put aside a magic missile scroll for just this contingency.  This is what happened:
Posted Image

Bassilus had got his mental domination spell off just before the magic missiles hit him and it appears that being dominated by a dead person is a game-ending eventPosted Image.  I had protection from evil up at the start of the combat, which might have helped here, but it had run out by this point.

However, what surprised me is that he got his spell off at all.  Mental domination is listed as casting time of 4 and that semed about right, but my magic missile scroll took far longer to cast than previous memorised magic missiles.  I rarely use scrolls for casting so I wonder if I've missed something here - do scrolls have a separate casting time from the spells they contain?

I'm a bit disappointed to have gone out in a rather tame fashion, so will probably restart that character from the beginning, rather than a new one.

Each round is 6 seconds right? So should be 6 seconds before casting the scroll? Did it take longer than that?

And sorry for your loss. Hope my fighter with his awesome stats doesn't get a demise like that!

Not exactly. Casting from scrolls (the same as other item use generally) only happens at each "tick" (round end/start transition) -- even if your aura is clear. AFAIK the actual casting time is the same, it's just that your character doesn't start casting until the end-of-round "tick".

I had thought the system used 'dynamic' rounds, i.e. that when you start to cast a spell that would initiate a new round (unless you were already in a round as a result of previous actions such as casting or item use), i.e. there is no delay in spell casting as a result of combat. Do you mean that, unlike spell use, item use is affected by combat rounds so that you have to wait for the existing combat round to finish before item use will trigger? If that's so I'm surprised I haven't noticed more of a delay before now - as I said I don't use scrolls much, but have used wands a reasonable amount in the past.

Edit: although, now that you mention it, I do remember thinking in the past that the ring of invisibility took a long time to trigger (and therefore potions of invisibility were a much better option in combat).

Sorry for your loss Grond0. I was under the impression you were taking a party and not soloing so my advice is not exactly sound. Though I would still dual late in BG1.

@ShadowLeech, a question of curiosity as I follow you: Are those mages with 10 Intelligence following vanilla rules about Write Magic (i.e. scroll copying)?

Does 10 Wisdom give a chance of spell failure to your cleric?

I've re-started Ester ("Ester 2 - this time it's personal"Posted Image).  To speed things up I've allowed use of Algernon's Cloak for the first time for quite a while.  I was quite prepared to kill Algernon to get it, but it seems ferrets can be useful for more than just keeping your rucksack well padded.  Ester has completed most of the other little jobs in Beregost and is now at level 3 ready to head on down to Nashkel.

Edit: soldiers helped with Neira, though fortunately Ester made the killing blow so kept all the XP.  Bought a ioun stone for protection and a scroll of invisibility for easier travel from High Hedge.  Then went to convince Meilum to work for me for a while until he was feeling poorly.  Then a 'back-claw' from the ferret set him up for a magic missile finish - his bracers will more than double Ester's damage with her darts, which will be nice.

To stretch out funds a bit now taking on some reputation quests:
- saving the cow
- returning Joia's ring (Tarnesh won't last long against that lot)
- a motley assortment helps take down Bassilus (extra-healing won't save him this time!)
- gained revenge for Bjornin (helping Drizzt was also worthwhile as one of the gnolls contributed a web scroll)
- reviving Melicamp (or maybe not)

Zallon the figher update 2:

Made a lot of progress since the last update. When we last heard of our heroes, Viconica, Zallon, and Imoen were making their way south to Beregost. But before we hit Beregost, we attacked the Ogre with the two belts. Viconia tried to entangle but that failed then the Ogre started chasing her, and she backed off and successfully commanded the ogre:
Posted Image
Needless to say, victory was assured after that.

Next we recruited Kagain, did his "quest", and battled the spiders. Both Kagain and Zallon got poisoned, and we had no antidotes, but enough heal potions to keep the tanks alive.

Next we battled Karlat the assassin. Yet again, Viconia puts the assasin to sleep - she apparently is pretty goo d at that.
Posted Image

Then we continued south and ran into some hobgoblin bandits with archers - Kagain took a lot of damage and had to use a few heal potions, but we were victorious - was glad I got a few extra at Friendly Arm Inn:
Posted Image

Next major encounter was Neira, yet another assasin. Imoen fired off her magic missile wand to try to interrupt Neira (which she did), and yet AGAIN Viconia puts the assasin to sleep, making them easy pickings:
Posted Image
I have NEVER had so much success with command spell, enemies usually resist.

Our last party member to pick up (until chapter 5) is Edwin, but I prefer to have Kagain level 2 first, so that we can better survive an ambush. So we battled Zordral. Imoen interrupted Zordral's spells with her magic missile wand and AGAIN Viconia put the enemy to sleep!
Posted Image

I got an unexpected bonus, both Kagain and Imoen gained a level!
Posted Image

Now we were ready to recruit Edwin and do his quest. So we pick him up and head to the gnoll fortress. We get ambushed by a winter wold and guess what happens? Yep, Viconia commanded the wolf successfully!
Posted Image

The dexterity gauntlets went to Kaigan. Most of the gnoll fortress was uneventful. I didn't get experience for killing Dynaheir, guess I was supposed to talk first. I rarely pick up Edwin so wasn't sure how it was supposed to work. Fortunately though, Edwin considers his quest complete so he won't leave for that. Kagain and Edwin provoke each other, which is OK as long as they don't come to blows.

I did have a very close call though, in the Xvart cave at the southwest corner - Edwin fired a color spray to defend himself, and guess he aimed it wrong and put Kagain to sleep! Kagain was being attacked by 4 xvarts. Viconia only had one heal and Kagain was dying quick. I had Viconia and Zallon engage different Xvarts and Edwin fired off two chromatic orbs. Fortunately that made one xvart morale break, and then shortly thereafter we killed another causing another morale to break, and Kagain survives by his chinny-chin-chin:
Posted Image

Last event of note is Zallon gained level 3 after killing the carrion feeder.
Posted Image

We got ambushed by a Cave Bear on the way to Nashkel and finally Viconia failed to command it even with two attempts. We still took it down, just Zallon and Kagain took some damage.

Here's the party status:
Kagain - level 2 fighter, 29 HP
Zallon - level 3 fighter, 39 HP
Viconia - level 3 cleric, 17 HP
Imoen - level 3 thief, 19 HP
Edwin - level 2 mage, 10 HP

Encountered one bug, but didn't reload, was that I didn't get any Bhaal power when I entered Nashkel, nor after repeated rests. Not sure what that means. But other than heals, I don't use the Bhaal powers much anyways. Not going reload for that.
