Quick Note on Alena's Game:

Alena has routed the Bandit Camp and is heading into the Cloakwood. I'll post again when she reaches the Mines.

For the curious, the Bandit Camp was an inelegant mess. Alena tried to stealth into the tent and take on the the honchos by themselves but it ended up being a game of follow the leader instead- all the Bandits outside waltzed into the tent right along with Alena. The place was packed: standing room only. Alena stumbled through with her wands and a bucket of healing potions but it wasn't pretty.

It's becoming increasingly clear that Santuary won't cover Alena's stealth needs in SCS. She may have to buy the Ring of Invisibility before hitting the mines. If she does choose to make the purchase, that will delay her arrival in the mines by a while- she doesn't have anywhere near 22,000 gold.

Best,

A.

Just to be clear--this is due to the issue of enemies following you while in Sanctuary but not attacking?

Shael is currently sitting outside the Iron Throne.  I haven't decided yet whether to attack the party there this time or just avoid them.

@Grond0: For the me the biggest reason to attack the iron throne 5th floor Sarevok Acolytes is whether I need the free-action ring or not. Also if Kivan in the group if I want the +2 halberd for him.

Decided that Shael should really attack the Iron Throne.  However, she took no chances - keeping next to the stairs and moving up and down as necessary.  Moved on to Candlekeep and ran straight past the ogre magi.  Also attacked the Iron Throne leaders there: the initial traps killed the mage, which I thought would make Shael safe.  However, after killing the thief I noticed he was equipped with darts of stunning.  As Shael had taken the ring of free action off to make use of boots of speed it might be a good job that his shots missed.

After looting the catacombs Shael moved on to confront Prat & co.  This time her initial traps did virtually no damage and she decided discretion was the better part of valour and just stealthed through.  Back in Baldur's Gate she avoided the guards and rescued Duke Eltan from his healer - after using the green amulet initially it was just a case of waiting around for mirror image to disappear before going in with the backstab.

Next up was Slythe & Kristin.  Slythe interrupted the attempted vampiric touch, but then smack into a full complement of traps that took him to near death.  An exceptionally good arrow shot, doing more damage than many backstabs, was comfortably enough to finish him off.  Normally Kristin is the easy one of the two, but Shael relaxed too far and made rather hard work of her.  First she was hit by a minor sequencer full of magic missiles - her shield going up a split-second after they finished impactingThen she got clobbered even harder by a flame arrow (that I hadn't even noticed being cast and had no fire protection up) before finally finishing Kristin off.

Just to emphasise that she / I needed a rest, a trip to sell items went slightly wrong when the cloak of Balduran, shield of missile protection and short sword of backstabbing were sold for a grand total of 3 gold pieces rather than being identified as intendedPosted Image.  The shield and sword are no great loss, but Shael will need to earn quite a bit of money to be able to buy the cloak back.

Ouch, that hurts. Something similar just happened to me, too. I sold Wand of monster summoning to Thalantyr, so that he could recharge it and he would sell it back for 28 thousand gp!

Update on soloing elven Fighter / Mage / Thief Syroluin:
Syroluin explored wilderness areas around Cloudpeak mountains. He helped Albert find Ruffie, defeated bandits Zal and Vax, and Amnish noble Sendai with her two companions. Further west, Syroluin saved tree of the dryad and found Drienne’s drowned cat.
Syroluin also cleared Xvart village including cave bears guarding it. Just north of Gnoll fortress, he met merchant Jared and paladin Laurel, defeated bandit Neville and band of Ogres.
Syroluin cleared Gnoll fortress, found Tome of Leadership and Influence, and saved mage Dynaheir. South of Lighthouse area, he found statue of Kozah, killed Doomsayer and saved captain Brage. During his travels, he found wounded deserter Samuel and took him to Friendly Arm Inn.
Finally, Syroluin entered Bandit camp. He killed numerous bandits, Ardenor Crush, Taugosz Khosann and guards in Tazok’s tent. In the chest, he found evidence about Cloakwood mine.

Syroluin is currently level 6/5/6 with 44HP.

I would count yourself lucky there Vaclavc that's a good bargain! I sold my wand of monster summoning to the FAI merchant and he woud only sell it back to me for 41500 gold in my most recent run in BG 1 with Zallon.

The price you pay is a function of the number of charges, as well as your reputation and charisma (there are also sometimes slight differences between shops in their base price - for instance I think some of the carnival shops are a bit cheaper).  The number of charges provided by shops is not the same - hence if you take a wand to a shop that recharges a wand of monster summoning with 50 charges that will be twice as expensive as one providing 25 charges.

Of course whatever the cost you are getting something more back for your money than you gave the shopkeeper - unlike Shael!

George, TN human male kensai. Travelling with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira and Coran.

Centeols pets don't scare me. Why should they,I'm hacking away behind Khalid. I hand the body of Chelak to Tiber and keep the large sword (spiders bane).

We rest outside Cloakwood mine after killing a couple of guards. Coran spots a welcoming party and suggests I wear the battered girdle. We buff and I approach so we can insult them before fighting breaks out. As they attack us Khalid and Imoen shoot at Rezdan. Coran emerges from the shadows to shoot Kysus while Jaheira casts entangle.

Within seconds Coran kills Kysus as Rezdan loses his final mirror image. Jaheira casts a second entangle as Coran kills Rezdan. The rest of us are going to struggle to keep up with Coran at this rate.

I'm doing well until Drasus lands a critical hit (20/40hp in one go), so I run into the entangle to heal as Jaheira dooms him. Khalid kills him as I return with kai, and Genthore is all alone. Jaheira has doomed him and I can hit from a distance. He is tangled and unable to get to me. Khalid lands a critical hit as do I.
Posted Image

My next hit finishes him off. Our backpacks are full so we return to Beregost, dealing with Silke while there. Garrick identifies everything except for three items before we boot him out. Imoen has decided to become a mage so identifies a few more items over the day or so.

Hareishan and co come out to greet us, so we kill them one by one. Khalid sighs with relief as I tell Yeslick to grab some items and act as our shield.

Shael will be entering the home straight in her next session.

Progress since the last update:
- popped over to Durlag's Tower to pick up the last tome.  While there realised Shael had only 1 potion to protect against basilisks, but still managed to kill the 4 on the roof (the final one solely by traps).  The proceeds from the Tower were not quite enough to buy back the cloak of Balduran, so went to pay a call on Cythandria to get a top-up.  That was more difficult than I expected - the golem slow meant they were following so closely up and down the stairs it was hard to get an opportunity to hide and Shael was hit before she managed it.  Once she did manage to shake the golems off Cythandria herself was easy enough.

On to the palace.  Here I think Shael did not come quite far enough into the room before showing herself as, when she ran upstairs, none of the dopplegangers followed her - worrying timesPosted Image.  She nipped back down and went into melee for a few rounds and this time 3 of them chased her.  Upstairs, with her movement advantage from boots of speed and lots of corners to hide round, the dopplegangers were dead meat.  Back down again and Shael finished off the last one with a backstab.  Liia was dead as a result of not getting the dopplegangers away first time; Belt was alive, but still wouldn't talk to me.  However, this happened in my last game as well, so I immediately searched the cellar and found one had run scared down there.  I also took the opportunity to rifle the treasure chest while there - a nice bit of money to add a few more potions to Shael's collection.

She has just finished navigating the maze.  She managed to disarm all the traps without using invisibility or showing herself to the guardians - this can be done near the skeleton warriors by taking advantage of the fact that stealth persists for a short while after it's turned off (stealth, move forward searching for traps, move back and re-stealth, move forward and disarm trap).

Good luck with Sarevok Grond0!

Best,

A.

Btw. If you need any tips on Bounty Hunting in BGII I'll be around. There is one thing I want to share now while I have the chance: do not try to Maze Trap a Cleric running Physical Mirror. The engine treats the Special Snare projectiles like arrows, you can end up Mazing yourself: game over. It'll be awhile before you have to worry about this but do file it away.

In my install, the principals and Black Talon Elites are immune but the generic Bandits and Chill Hobgoblins are not. Just a few shots to show how the Wand of Sleep helped there.

Yes, SCS raises the level of the Black Talons and a few others like Lamalha's group, to be immune to sleep.

- tried playing with my BGT only installation; in this shadowkeeper shows a number of new versions of ankhegs that are shown as level 3/30/1 rather than 3/1/1 (bit of a difference).  However, on playing the game I was able to successfully use the wand on ankhegs (though only when they were already on the surface), so it looks like the original copy is still used in the BG1 part of BGT.

Many random creatures like zombies are coded as being level 30 in their 2nd class, however, in my experience, the game only considers this value (for purposes of HD limited spells) if the creature has a valid multiclass.

A strange bug. Interestingly, the game does not allow psionic maze or BH Maze traps to be blocked by Chaotic Commands - so most clerics will still be mazeable.

Coltan entering Trilogy No-reload Challenge

Am entering the challenge with this character:
proficiencies:
* long sword
* missile weapons

Notice I didn't bother trying to get massive stats. Last run had massive stats and he still died so decided on "good enough" stats. I waited to post to see if I could get past the 5 initial assassins and any waylays on the way. I did so entering his results.

Setup:
Vanilla BG 1
ToTSC expansion
Official ToTSC patch
No Mods

Strategy:
Since I am a full fledged thief, I don't need Imoen's thieving skills. Therefore, making Imoen a mage immediately when she turns level 2. Also putting her level 2 thief points in to stealth when the time comes. Intend a good aligned party. I went Imoen to get to level 2 ASAP so I can have her equip the ring of wizardry and also memorize the ton of spells she is carrying. I also got 2 INT potions and some antidote potions.

So to carry out this strategy, I first used Xzar and Montaron against Tarnesh. We then kicked them out and I picked up Ajantis. When we zoned back to FAI we fought the goblins. Then we headed to Beregost to talk Marl out of fighting, then fight to kill him, get book for firebeard, and fight the spiders at level 1 (though Ajantis is level 2). We used up all our antidote potions but Imoen got her level 2 and we won.

We equip Imoen with a sling (yeah I know I can get more attacks per round with darts, BUT a sling enables Iomen to keep her distance which I prefer not wasting healing on her) and now are ready to pick up Khalid and Jaheira. We buy a composite bow for Khalid and he will be ranged attack primary and secondary tank if needed. We battle Karlat but got our first party death of the game.

We have to waste 200 gold to resurrect Ajantis and also several nights in the Inn to get our spells back and heal him to full, then we start our march to Nashkel. With the goblin bandits that attack on the way, imoen helped out nicely by sleeping the goblin archers. Rest of the trek was without incident.

We get to Nashkel and give the Ankheg Armor to Ajantis, and Khalid gets the hand me down plate armor we picked up from a rather aggressive flaming fist mercenary. We battle Neira. As expected the fighters got held. Jaheira was throwing darts, Imoen and Coltan their slings. Khalid started to get pretty low health so Coltan gulped a haste potion and attacked. He got a good hit and Neira fell.

Long term plan is to kit to bounty hunter in BG 2, assuming I make it that far. It's a big assumption, when I am a thief I tend to die early.

Final Update on Alena's Game:

I am sad to say that Alena has fallen. She was cruising through the Drasus battle when, suddenly, she was Petrified by a Chromatic Orb from Kysus. I wasn't aware his level was high enough to do that but I checked his CRE file and yup: he's level 11 alright. Had I known his level, Alena could have brought some Potions of Mirror Eyes. But what you don't know can kill you. And now she's gone. Watch out for that SCS players.

I don't have any other characters I'm excited about at the moment so I may be out of action for a while. In any event, best of luck to everyone!

sorry for your loss Alesia. I think there's in item in the Carnival, a horn or claw that protects against level one and level two spells. I'm going to use that in my current run as there seem to be several level one and level two spells that just end runs.

The Horn of Kazgaroth can be purchased from High Hedge. It can't be used by Clerics, Druids or Thieves, though. It only lasts a short time and each shot deals 10 damage to the user as well, so be aware of that.

There are a number of ways to stop yourself from being Petrified by a Chromatic Orb. You have to know there is a threat though. I had no idea. At least now I do...

Ahem - is there a small dichotomy herePosted Image.  I don't think I've ever done that as a goody two-shoes, though I must admit to occasionally giving in to temptation to relieve Drizzt of his armour and weapons (especially tempting for a vanilla fighter / thief.

One of the things I've quite enjoyed with my current run is exploring the dark side of encounters - several that I don't remember doing that way before.

Sorry to hear about Zallon by the way - you looked to be on a good roll there.  Best of luck with your thief.  In my experience use of stealth is really handy - for melee users this lets you get a free backstab in before running away and for missile users a free shot likewise.  It can be a bit tedious if you only have about 30% is HiS / MS, but is a pretty safe way for a thief to progress (also other stealthy characters like a monk).

Look forward to seeing what you can make of a bounty hunter in BG2.  Maybe you should bite the bullet and install Tutu or BGT so you can experience the joys of kits there too?

Thanks for the tip.  Sorry to hear about Alena - I've died several times to chromatic orbs, which even at lower levels are likely to kill you if you get stunned.  I find them very difficult to defend against, partly because you need to know in advance what effect is being used.  Touch_of_the_void referred to the horn of Kazgoroth and I have made extensive use of this on some runs, but the short duration makes it a bit of a test of patience to use effectively.  Mind you, I'm sure you would be much better at that than mePosted Image.

Hope you do decide to try another incarnation soon - perhaps try a few random creations to see if any of them pique your interest?

Good luck, corey. I love single class thieves in no-reload, but so far, none of my thieving characters survived through ordeals of BG1. Perhaps you should consider playing assassin in SoA (with all due respects to Alesia's signature Bounty hunter character, I think that among all thieving kits, assassins have the highest coolness factor :D ) ?

This is turning out to be a bad day for no-reload playersPosted Image as Shael has also just fallen against Sarevok.  Initially when dimension door animations appeared on the battlefield she read a scroll of magic protection and dumped Sarevok in a corner while hiding behind a pillar.  However, neither Semaj, nor Tazok then appeared.  I wasn't particularly surprised about Semaj hiding, but didn't think protection from magic would also put off Tazok.

After twiddling her thumbs for a while the scroll wore off and she got Tazok to appear, though Semaj immediately went invisible again.  Tazok stuck next to Sarevok so was shot up from a distance under stealth.  With him and the resultant skeleton warrior out of the way Shael returned to flush out Semaj - she did so, but Sarevok also activated and started chasing.  Shael was heading for the corner to dump Sarevok again when she sensed an emotion spell heading her way.
Posted Image
She quickly quaffed a potion and ... lay down to die.

Unfortunately she took a potion of clarity, which I stupidly thought was going to protect against this spell - just looking at the spell description that wouldn't be a stupid mistake to make, but I had noticed in the past that ring of free action appears to protect against this and therefore it must be coded as some sort of movement restriction.  I could have of course put on the ring momentarily (not for long as I needed the boots of speed to lose Sarevok), taken a potion of magic blocking (I had 2) or magic shielding (I had 4) or just used a charge from the green amulet prior to looking for Semaj.  In general I tend to be minimal with buffs and sometimes that's costly - oh well.  Apologies to Saint of Sinners that I won't be joining the BG2 forum in the near futurePosted Image.

I know I am the minority on this board. However, I like BG 1 as originally designed, and I also like BG 2 as originally designed. I don't want to play BG 2 twice. I have no desire whatsoever to play kits at low levels.

If I play assassin, I will have to have another thief along (the 15 pts to distribute for thief skills). I don't want two thieves in the party. Besides I want to use traps (which I rarely use actually) for once. My pure thieves haven't made a no-reload yet, though I have had a fighter/thief (Kraq) and a mage/thief make it to the end before.
