Hard luck, Grond0... So close... :(

Best of Luck, Alesia! (you read my mind about Halfling, thats for sure! As Alena fell I thought for myself about Halfling Cleric as one of my future chars...)

Quick update of BlackStrider &Co
Band Of Four cleared Larswood and Peldvale. Right at the end of Peldvale Imoen hit level 7 mage and regained her thief abilities, yep! There we met rocking girl Viconia and invited her in a Band as lead vocal. At the same time we thought that her exotic appearance should bring the Band a fine new outlook.
Now, with thief's abilities back on a desk Band Of (now) Five ought to tie up some loose (locked, trapped) ends before Bandit Camp.

to be continued...

Yup. All of my runs have been with SCS. I wouldn't play without it. :)

I looked at one of the multi-player parties I'd rolled previously, but don't think I've got the patience for that at the moment.  Rolled up a couple of random characters I didn't fancy, before getting this one 3rd time lucky.

Here she is having just arrived at High Hedge.

My aim with her is to get through BG1 as fast as possible in game time - aiming to beat the 26 days I took in the Need for Speed challenge (though that was with a party).  Hence she will be picking up XP where she can, rather than roleplaying - this is why she killed Firebead at Candlekeep (the ability to stealth makes this easy and I thought the XP was worth the hour or so of game time it took).  Also took out Xzar and Montaron through stealth on the way here, to acquire their potions.

Sorry for your loss Grond0 you were so close. Good luck with Feral!

P.S Grond0 sorry if I missed it but were you ever ambushed by any sort of archers? And if so how did you deal with it? Was the gaining of Shadow Armor a necessary to deal with it?

George, TN human male kensai. Travelling with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Coran and Yeslick.

Eight guards were left by Hareishan, they are dead now. The next level is painful, with Jaheira and I getting hurt badly by several swords while we kill three hobgoblin archers. We risk resting, and Kagain positions to take us through to the next level.

Yeslick summons a skeleton and we patiently wait until Davaeorn summons an ettercap before switching to his quarterstaff. We move in to help and I kill Davaeorn. I choose not to flood the mine in case I want to deal with Natasha and the ogre mage later.

Baldurs Gate should be open to us now.

Latest adventures of Arande + co:

After resting up in Nashkel we headed to Beregost to confront Tranzig. I was expecting this to be a tough mage fight - possibly worse than Nimbul because of being in a confined space and so being more susceptible to area-of-effect disabling spells like Emotion and Horror.

In the end it was a big anti-climax. For some reason he didn't pre-buff with anything but Armor (or maybe Shield, can't remember). Doom + Summon Insects -> bye bye Tranzig. He got a Slow off but that was it.

This got Arande to level 6 and the others weren't far behind.

We then got into a fight with Molkar and friends in the wilderness (as a result of SCS making assassin groups actually hunt the party down rather than staying put). This battle went well for us. Doom + Summon Insects took care of the fighter / illusionist (Halacan - apparently he wasn't high enough level for a Minor Globe) and, a round later, the cleric (Drakar). The two fighters were also Doomed and we were throwing around a lot of Call Lightning. The party took a reasonable amount of melee damage but coped fine.

I was ambushed quite a few times, but never had any problems.  The thieves armour class is likely to be 1 or better (assuming just basic studded leather, dex of 18 and a +1 protection item), which means basic bandits / kobolds / hobgoblins won't hit very easily.  My normal routine start is to go to High Hedge and then Beregost (there are no missile users that will ambush on that route) and then get XP from Beregost and the surrounding areas before doing any other travelling.  It's easy to get 8,000 XP like that and over 10,000 is quite possible without taking any risks.

That gives a decent amount of HPs before risking ambushes, so the main danger then for thieves would be from a couple of lucky criticals.  However, in my game a ioun stone is for sale at High Hedge, which prevents these, and I acquired this before travelling elsewhere.  With their lower HPs and worse AC mages are much more vulnerable to ambushes even at somewhat higher levels, but High Hedge also sells invisibility scrolls, so (unless really unlucky in failing to learn all of these) I would always travel everywhere invisible after that.

Summary of progress with Feral so far:
- picked up Perdue's sword and bought wand of sleep from High Hedge (had to sell nearly all my potions to do this unfortunately, but should make it possible to go to the Nashkel mines earlier).
- pacified Marl, then killed Algernon for his cloak - need to be careful not to let reputation go down too much with my ranger!
- killed some spiders (ranger level 2).
- Used one mercenary to help save Viconia against another (cleric level 3).
- killed Karlat and returned Perdue's sword.
- Zhurlong spurned the chance of getting his boots back, so just sold them.
- went on down to Nashkel and talked to Noober before attacking Neira. Then on to the mines area and Feral took her first well-deserved rest.

Update of BlackStrider & Co

Well, loose ends are done - Ulcaster, Gullykin & Firewine undergrounds, Doomsayer, some minor encounters. Wiped out the Bandits Camp. Now as all areas behind are clear Band headed to the Cloakwood. In the first Cloakwood area we met a fellow lad Coran. He seems to be a capable promoter for our Band, so now finally full Band Of Six is roaming in the depth of Cloakwood Forest.

to be continued...

Coltan the halfling thief - Update 1

Coltan, with his band of Ajantis, Khalid, Jaheira, Branwen and Imoen have made good progress. We had a few party deaths but Coltan himself didn't die, so guess it's all good. Some highlights:
* Coltan survives his first ambush. The low level ambushes are always the worse. I even ran away on one ambush, the party was getting mauled (luckily on that one no one died).
* With a 6 man party and remove fear on the party, Zordral usually falls pretty easily. His robe went to Imoen
* On the road from Nashkel to Beregost, we had a rather bad battle. Iomen died. This is our 2nd party death. What happened was Branwen got hit with a poisoned arrow from a elite goblin - while we were trying to keep her a live, we got sniped from behind by a ghould who both held Imoen and killed her before we could deal with the ghoul.
* We got some good news on the west side of the sword coast: Iomen regained her thief abilities.. The only real difference is that she uses a shortbow now, she has one less weapon slot, and if we can get a 2nd pair of stealth boots she might be able to stealth before we travel between areas.
* The party defeats Mulahey and his cohorts pretty easily, mainly due to a sleep by Imoen and a successful hold person by Branwen. We came back to Nashkel and engaged Nimbul. He too got held by Branwen and it was all over then. Boots of avoidance went to Ajantis.
* While moving between place to place we got one of more worse ambushes - a bunch of bandit archers and a couple of worgs to boot. Imoen, being targeted by 5 bandit archers, died almost immediately. Cotan had to gulp of a few healing potions, but eventually the party prevailed.
* We've been saving for a while, and finally could afford shadow armor for Coltan. Now that Ajantis has boots of avoidance and +1 large shield, I believe we are ready to take on Sendai. I've had some bad results here before, however this time, Sendai was destroyed.. We fired a stinking cloud and Branwen successfully got off 2 hold persons.  It was a even a very fair fight as I didn't fire into the "fog of war", only cast spells after they saw us. We also battled Zal and Vax. All I had to do was move Ajantis right by Vax and he switched to melee instead of his darts. This guaranteed the win for us. Decided the bracers of archery would go to Imoen since she gets 2 attacks with her bow.

Our next forays will be the temple area and then the 3 tombs area.

Party Status:
Ajantis: level 4 paladin, 28 HP
Khalid: level 4 fighter, 37 HP
Jaheira: level 3 fighter/level 3 druid, 24 HP
Branwen: level 4 cleric, 29 HP
Coltan: level 4 thief, 21 HP
Iomen: level 2 thief > level 3 mage, 21 HP

After Molkar we also took out the all-female assassins. They turned up at the Friendly Arm Inn, which I wasn't expecting. Fortunately we still had most of our spells. Something was a little weird in the battle because only the two clerics and one of the thieves initially turned up. We dealt with them pretty easily (still had Call Lightning and Summon Insects memorised).

I realised the other thief was probably around somewhere; she turned up half way around the map and managed to take out Malvolo with a backstab. Grr. Well we have plenty of gold so never mind. Needless to say Maneira didn't last long on her own.

Alana in the Nashkel Mines

Alana has blitzed the Nashkel Mines and is now resting in Beregost. She will head to the Bandit Camp shortly.

In the mines, the biggest threat actually came from the crew of Commandos and Guards just after the traps on Level 3. Despite needing Criticals to hit, they did a lot of damage and dug into Alana's healing supply. Once Alana stopped being stingy with the Wand of Sleep charges everything went fine, but those potions will be missed.

The Shaman and Chieftan fell to the Necklace of MIssles. The Greenstone Amulet and Shield Amulets were the only buffs. Cure Disease via Alana's personal item, Where the Hearth Is, covered the Blindness threat. Potions of Freedom were at the ready.
Posted Image

Mulahey fell to Dart of Stunning-> Short Sword. The buffs (Greenstone Amulet, Potion of Freedom, Potion of Strength) proved unneccessary but were nice to have nonetheless.
Posted Image
Posted Image

I'll note that Mulahey's pre-buff script got glitchy here presumably because he was stunned: he ended up Blessing the Kolbolds a dozen times. The Blessings of Mulahey didn't help though. The Kolbolds got the Wand of Sleep followed by cold steel.

Nimbul suffered a uncomplicated and undignified death.

Bandit Campe awaits.

Btw. Some color shots from Alana's pre-intro post adventures.

An early Carnival shopping trip gave Alana a jump start on heroism.

Tymora was not in favor of an easy level up.

@ Grond0- I'm going to have Alana use the Claw rather than the Horn to cover the Chromatic Orb threat. She'll make the save every time with that on. I'd rather take the HP max hit then complicate item/aura management. The Save v. Death Penalty isn't a concern- those threats are easily foiled or countered.

The other nice thing about the Claw is that it gets her Missle adjustment down to -20. That's very helpful for a Slinger.

Alana at the Bandit Camp

Alana employed a very simple strategy at the Bandit Camp- one that she hopes to use throughout the Trilogy. Staying ranged, and negating ranged attacks.

Alana strode up to the Camp brazenly. The dinner bell rang, and it was time to chow down.
Posted Image

There were many flavors of Bandits here of course, but they were all rolling against heavy odds with Alana's formidible Missle Adjustment. So long as she kept out of melee range, Criticals were the only threat. She stayed on the move and popped the principles with her Sling while managing her Critical exposure with the Wand of Sleep and the Necklace of Missles.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Killing Venkt was tactical priority number one- simply because it meant she wouldn't need to worry about reactivating the the Greenstone Amulet and Shield Amulet. He was mortally wounded with the Necklace of Missles and then finished with the Whistling Sword after an invisible healing session.
Posted Image
Posted Image

To work on the rest then.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Finally, it was just Alana and Taugosz -the one who had been clinging to her heels throughout the fight. He was dropped promptly with the Whistling Sword. Alana's blade was too quick for him: no Potion of Absorption neccessary- even though Brikt was kind enough to provide one.

Coltan the halfing thief - Update 2

Party made more progress. Party is level 5 except Jaheira is 4/4 and Coltan is 6. Bandit camp will be our next target tomorrow. Here are some higlights:

* The party defeated the revenant but Jaheira almost bit it.
* The battle with the Amazons was extremely bloody.. Jaheira and Khalid died. The party was just BARELY able to loot the dead party member's equipment and the amazon loot.
* The three tombs area just isn't a good place for Khalid. He died when we battled and defeated the mustard jellies. Yet another trip to the temple.
* Interestingly enough Ajantis and Khalid both got to level 5 off the same ogre. This was unexpected because Ajantis has been in the party longer than Khalid has. Khalid has also been dead part of the time so has missed out on experience.
* In one of the Sirines areas, Imoen makes level 5. We are now ready for the bandit camp.
* Ajantis got charmed by a Sirine and started to attack the party's casters. We put wall of summons around him and left his vicinity. Ajantis of course has the best equipment, but the summons were getting a lot of criticals. Ajantis barely survived. Here's his HP after the dire charm wore off.

Coltan is level 6 with 27 HP. He got a lot of so-so rolls leveling up. This makes backstabbing pretty risky oftentimes. If he stays in the back, think he will be OK for BG 1, but could be dicey in BG 2. We will just have to see...

Thanks for the tip.  I used to use this regularly for party members in order to improve the tank's AC, but haven't tended to use it for my PC.  I have reconsidered it several times in recent runs (and actually bought it a couple of times for shifting into inventory when aware a save or else spell was coming, though never made use of it).  However, for general use I've always been concerned that the death penalty would open up more of a weakness, e.g. against stinking cloud.  It's been pretty easy to get down to criticals only for missile combat without it for all the characters I've played recently, so that hasn't had much of an attraction (for a mage type this would be more beneficial, especially as they would probably not then suffer any loss of HPs).

In terms of saving throws doom and greater malison are both used regularly by SCS.  Are you using potions to keep your saving throws down when these are used against you?

Makes sense.

Alana can shut down all disablers- including Stinking Clouds. The only issue for her is Petrification via Chromatic Orb. The early Counter options there are short duration. The Claw allows her to make the save at +6 even under Doom. A Potion of Stone Form will suffice as a counter for Malison. It works for her.

I also decided to go the Claw route because I intend to bring it into BGII. I could be a nice tool for her in certain battles- more helpful then The Helm.

The Claw does have it's drawbacks though- I can definitely see why you'd prefer the Horn. It's a matter of style. I try to avoid relying on timing and short duration limited use stuff whenever possible. There is a higher ceiling without the Claw, but less margin for error with my character. That's a trade I'm comfortable with at this point.

Once she hits Sorceress Sundries, she'll likely go to a temple and unequip it. She definitely won't wear it against Slythe. She may use it for the Sarevok fight since it will allow her to keep her Missle Adjustment super low without shedding her Boots of Speed.

In terms of saving throws doom and greater malison are both used regularly by SCS.  Are you using potions to keep your saving throws down when these are used against you?

As above. :)

Alana in the Cloakwood

Alana didn't spend much time dawddling in the Cloakwood. She recovered Chelak (and Spider's Bane) but aside from that stayed focused on her mission.

The Spiders were handled with Potion of Mind Focusing, Protection from Poison, a Potion of Freedom, a Potion of Frost Giant Strength, and a generous supply of Healing Potions. As evident here, the odds were clearly with Alana.
Posted Image

The only part that got a little dicey was the fight with Centeol due to the odd physics of the room (I never know were -exaclty- I can walk in there). She was stuck for a bit. And with upgraded Spiders, there were a lot of attacks per round to evade.
Posted Image

She fought through though.
Posted Image

The reward, or course, is non-depletable Free Action to counter Webs in Giant Spider waylays. (Dushai wasn't an option on role-playing grounds). Alana is now free to move throughout the Cloakwood without fear. :)

A.

Alana v. Drasus

I'm usually not terribly concerned with the Drasus fight. But after seeing a more powerful and flexible character insta-killed here, the battle was approached with a bit more caution. Alana buffed thoroughly and escaped with just a few nicks (more precisely, Acid burns...).

The buffs here were Potion of Mind Focusing, Protection from Fire, Protection from Acid, Potion of Fire Resistance, Potion of Cold Resistance, Potion of Absorption, Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, Shield, and Greenstone.

The only damage that got through were a pair of Acid arrows that were softened by Pro Acid. There was never really any risk.

Alana dispatched the Guards and then opened with Charm on Genthore via Lord Foreshadow's Ring of Human Influence. Success. And while Genthore was hardly a threat with Alana's Missle Adjustment, it was nice to have a meatshield around.
Posted Image

Next Drasus. Alana hit hard and quick: he never landed a blow.
Posted Image

Kysus fell to a Necklace of Missles barrage.
Posted Image

Rezdan, to Genthore.
Posted Image

Genthore, to the Sling.
Posted Image

Fin.

Best,

A.

Btw. While Alana's buffs were excessive here, they allowed her to open the Potion of Magic Shieldding chest and carried through to the Haresheim fight. The investment paid off- there will be adequate supplies for upcoming fights.

Thanks for the earlier response Alesia.  In your screenshot it looked like your fireball caught Genthore as well as Kysus.  How come that didn't turn him hostile?
