Coltan the halfling thief - update 3 - some disasters strike

Coltan is continuing to make progress. Only near miss for himself was when we were ankheg hunting Coltan got targeted by two Ankhegs. I decided to use an invisibility potion - that avoided any contact. Close one, Coltan only has 30 HP. Some highlights of the run:

* On the way to the bandit camp, Khalid got level 6 in an ambush.
* In the bandit camp itself, Khalid got the full plate from Khosann.
* While fighting in Ulcaster School and returning the book to the ghost, Coltan made level 7.
* While ankheg hunting, Imoen made level 6.
* On my last run I had a lot of success using a party to clear the Basilisks map. That definitely was not the case this time. When we were fighting Mutamatin Jaheira got petrified and so did Khalid. We restored via scroll. However we explored the map some more and then Jaheira got petrified and an attack destroyed her statue. She is lost forever this game. RIP Jaheira. We lost her ankheg armor, unfortunately. So decided I better just take down the adventuring party and get out of here, not a profitable place to be. Well Ajantis got held and killed. We were only able to loot what we wanted by having Khalid gulp a STR potion. We headed to Beregost to ponder our next move. We could get new characters in the cloakwood, such as Coran, the bard, Faldhorn or the dwarven cleric. Was thinking maybe another archer to mow down the enemies, but Garrick might not be bad either (to have another character capable of using arcane wands).

Update on soloing elven Fighter / Mage / Thief Syroluin:

Syroluin explored areas west of High Hedge. Protected from Evil, he defeated numerous Sirines.

Posted Image

Their arrows of biting come handy when fighting Flesh Golems. In their cave, Syroluin found Manual of bodily health.

Posted Image

Next, Syroluin entered Cloakwood and thoroughly searched all its areas.

Posted Image
Posted Image

He found the secret mine and killed mercenaries guarding the entrance.

Posted Image

Upon entering the mine, he had to fight his way through it to lower levels.

Posted Image

Finally, Syroluin confronted Davaeorn. He dispelled his protections and killed him with several barrages of Magic missiles.

Posted Image
Posted Image

In the Cloakwood, Syroluin hit the experience cap; he is level 6/6/7 with 54HP.

I tried selling a Wand of the Heavens to a few of the early game merchants using a dummy character. They all recharge it to 100 charges. Is there anyone that only recharges 25 or 50 charges? The 22.000 gold price is a bit high at this point.

Have you tried Ulgoth's Beard?

Arande just had a bit of a close call fighting some ogres. We'd used most of our spells and I'd thought this group was slightly weaker than it was... a string of probability-defying saves against Summon Insects and the Wand of Fear followed and first Tanarakt then Malvolo fell in the melee.

Posted Image

Arande for the first time in the game actually took quite a lot of damage and got poisoned. Fortunately the Wands of Sleep and the Heavens bailed us out but it wasn't fun.

Feral is now on day 10 game time and has just finished the Cloakwood mines, but could do with a bit of HELPPosted Image now.

She stealthed through virtually all the cloakwood (resting twice on the way), just charming a few spiders and ettercaps where necessary.  Unfortunately also needed to use a potion to evade a spider ambush.  On arrival at the mines she took on the party there, which again might have been a tactical error.  She started off by successfully charming Drasus.  With his boots of speed being the main prize she could have just bumped him off, but chose to use him against the rest of the party.  Ultimately Drasus was killed, though Genthore survived on my side, with the last mage falling to a potion of firebreath.  A lot of potions were used in this battle because one of the mages got a remove magic in.

In the mines themselves the basic tactic was to push charmed characters ahead in order to soak up attacks from both weapons and spells.  This worked quite well with Feral not being targeted by any spells throughout.  On the bottom level Yeslick, Hareishan, Genthore and a couple of guards managed to exhaust Daveorn's spell book between them, although Feral did take a potion of magic shielding at one point when she thought Daveorn might be able to target her.  That left Daveorn helpless against a mobile slinger.

The problem is that Feral now has no potions of freedom, invisibility or magic shielding.  That restricts her chances of getting out of the cloakwood.  She does have one potion of invulnerability and one of magic protection, either of which would probably give her something like a 50/50 chance of escaping a spider ambush, but if anyone has any better ideas I'd appreciate that.  She is at cleric 5 / ranger 5, so has access to 3rd level spells, but I can't see anything that looks likely to save her.  Sanctuary would be great if it cast quickly, but spiders would probably web her before she could finish that one.

@ Grond0- And here I was suggesting you were being too stingy with high value potions. I hope I didn't nudge you into this mess...

Did you get the Potion of Magic Shielding in the chest near Drasus?

As for the Potion of Magic Protection, I'm pretty sure the Giant Spider Webs ignore Magic Resistance- I've gotten webbed by them in Jelly form.

I'd assume a long slog of two single classes to get to 2 sets of HLA's. Then again I don't know how long 7m or so xp takes solo so maybe a lot of game left.

A Gnome Illusionist/Cleric would have many advantages. They get more low level mage spells, they end up as higher level clerics with cleric HLAs, they have access to mage wands and spells early in the game and they don't have to do a crazy dual-class in the middle of SoA. The reason why I want to dual is Boon of Lathander. A multiclass cleric/mage can only have four APR with standard weapons. There are some shapes you can turn into that have more. You can even dispel the form's weapon to reveal your own. Sadly, with this tactic you will be left unable to cast spells while attacking. As a Priest of Lathander -> mage my character will be able to have almost 20 rounds of 10 APR with the Black Blade of Disaster and the Flail of Ages while being able to cast spells. With all the cleric bonuses each attack should do about 50 damage. Most other classes can only get such a high APR by repeatedly activating greater whirlwind or by using an off-hand weapon with low damage. You can do far more damage in a round with assassination, but this tactic is very easy to pull off and has a very long duration.

I intend to level up as a cleric in BG2 by going for the main campaign very early on. I should reach level 21 around the time I regain access to side-quests. I think finishing BG1 will be more challenging than dual-classing.

Can't a K13->M do basically just as well?  In your example you have 8 APR with BBoD and 2 with FoA.  Compare with 8 APR with with BBoD and 2 with Belm.  You miss out on maybe 5 damage per hit plus whatever Belm can't hit.  Much easier dual, although the Kensage can't maintain Max Damage as long.  Of course, you get other benefits like all the C/M sequencer tricks.

High level Cleric->Mage duals aren't as bad as they sound. I did one with a Priest of Talos in the old Ascension Solo Challenge.

Scrolls-> Side Quests should work fine.

I concur with QEDs judgement that BG1 will be more challenging then executing the dual.

There is a lot of fun to be had with Cleric buffs and Shapechanging.

Alana v. Sarevok

Alana defeated Sarevok by following the same playbook used by Alia and Ashanti: buff heavy, keep PoIs and duplicates in case dispelled. Remove Sarevok's Oil of Speed with an Arrow then drop Semaj, folowed by Angelo and Diarmid. Finally, end the oafs with the Sling.

Alana was in complete command from start to finish.

Alana opened with a Dispelling Arrow on Sarevok. Without his Oil of Speed, he became tactically irrelevant. He remained so throughout the fight.

On to Semaj.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Angelo's turn. A nasty missle adjustment kept Alana safe in this phase.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

The biggest setback of the battle occured here when Angelo's Skeleton Warrior incarnation Criticalled Alana with a Dispelling Arrow.
Posted Image

Fortunately, the casters had been dropped so it wasn't an issue. Alana rebuilt her relevant buffs on the run and promptly moved the Ranged Skellies to the top of the hit list.
Posted Image

Diarmid was next.
Posted Image

Tazok was invisible. Alana basically had to sit still and let him wack her to reveal him.

There you go big fella.
Posted Image

Oil of Speed Tazok? Good idea but...

Posted Image

Finally, Sarevok. Never bring a Sword to a Sling fight...

Congrats Alesia! Good luck in BG 2.

@touch_of_the_void: Good job surving the Ogres - the ones in Sirine country? There's a heck a lot of them, and would be real tough if you pulled the whole group  at once (the Ogre Berserkers have considerable melee).

Well its been almost a year since I last played the BG series. Its time to get back in the groove.
I am entering Durga, a female human berserker, for a solo no-reload Trilogy run with SCS and exp cap in place.
I am currently living in India and Durga is the name of a fierce Hindu goddess who rides a tiger and slays demons.

Durga will be a chaotic evil character, who will be dualled to a power-hungry, no-holds barred thief, the true daughter of the Lord of Murder, early in BG2 at level 9. She will seek to become the new Lord of Murder by slaughtering anyone and anything that looks ****eyed at her. It will be a evil, stealing, backstabbing, trapping, exploiting solo game all the way. Her primary role-playing attitude is a potent lust to "WIN", "DOMINATE", and "KILL" at all costs. Style means nothing to her--only the end results count--and that means a successful solo no-reload with a maximum chunked body count.

Stats:

Str 18
Dex 18
Con 18
Int 12
Wis 8
Cha 8

Weapon proficiencies in BG1: shortbows and shortswords

I expect this to be a very quick run through BG1. Three years ago I took 4 berserkers solo thru BG1, and two were successful no-reloads, one with exp cap off and one with exp cap on. Their adventures were fully documented in the old BG1 forums.

IMO a berserker is one of the easiest characters to solo no-reload BG1. The enrage ability is an assured "I WIN" button against virtually all casters, sirens, etc. in the game. There is easy leveling by hunting sirens, basilisks, and flesh golems. Then a quick dash to the finish line. With enough potions (especially invisi potions) the final fight is easy. The only real difference between this run and my previous runs runs will be that Durga is human and chaotic evil, where my previous characters were dwarves and chaotic neutral. So unless there is some drastic change in strategy or unexpected development, this will be a silent, quick run through BG1 with little reporting.

In fact, I fully expect to finish this run today in just a few hours time, and be ready for BG2 by this evening. My primary goal in BG1 is to obtain the tomes of strength, constitution, and dex in preparation for BG2, thus raising her stats to 19 in all three categories. My secondary goal is to obtain and keep the golden pantaloons, hehe. I have never used that secret set before, and plan to on this run. Thus, if all goes well, my next post will be to say goodbye, as I am moving onto BG2.

Thanks for the info - I've normally got the ring of free action before meeting them, so don't have much unprotected experience.

Did you get the Potion of Magic Shielding in the chest near Drasus?

Yep - that was the one used up when I thought Daveorn was about to target Feral with a spell.

I should be getting ready for work now, but couldn't resist seeing if Feral could survive the journey.  12 hours in and a wyvern / spider ambush is sprung - I tried to screenshot the web on its way, but must not have pressed hard enough.  However,
Posted Image
that's a welcome sight.

As soon as the autopause kicked in Feral was off and running for the top of the board.  She did actually stop to take the potion of invulnerability, which slowed her slightly, but she still made it before the web hit.  Part of the reason I asked for help in my previous post was that I wondered whether anyone had experience of the possibility of out-running the web with the boots of speed on - fortunately it looks like it is possible.

Only the bottom spider of the 3 cast its web, which gave slightly more time to run, but if she hadn't stopped to drink the potion I think she probably would have made it even against the closest one.  The end result was therefore another wasted potion here, but I'm not going to quibble about that onePosted Image.

No further ambushes on the way back to the Friendly Arm, so Feral will be heading into the city in her next session.

Coltan the halfling thief update - Cloakwood Forest

The battle with Centeol was interesting. Was a bit difficult for his party, but we just kept at it and eventually prevailed. The opening fireballs didn't seem too effective.  See progress below.

Centeol Battle Part 1
Centeol Battle Part 2
Centeol Defeated
Of course no one is strong enough to lug Chelak's body so we had to use a STR potion here.

I took no chances against Drassus. Coltan scooted up while stealthed, then Garrick and Iomen fired some fireballs via wand and Coltan fired 2 shots from necklace of missiles. Needless to say, the enemy no no clue what  hit them. Amazingly there was one survivor but when the party charged they died from a single arrow hit. Success!

I had a close call in an ettercap amush. Normally those go smooth for my parties but this one Garrick accidentally stepped on a web trap - holding 4 party members including Coltan. Branwen casted animate dead before she failed her save vs web. Lot of pausing going on here. Khalid was man of the hour, tanking 3 ettercaps at once without even getting poisoned. If he died would have been chaos for the people being held. We survived!

Against Hareishan I gave lots of buffs mostly via potion to Ajantis. He showed himself and fired off 2 charges of the necklace of missiles. This killed the mage so party charged and finished off the survivors.

Last was Daveorn himself. Lots of the usual buffs protection from fire/lightning, magic shielding and such. Had him charge Daveorn for a while, then one he had his attention Imoen and Khalid starting whacking Daveorn with their bow. Garrick tried to throw in a fire ball but the archers killed Daveorn before the fireball could hit.

Entire party is level 7 except for Ajantis, but Ajantis only needs 4000 experience to catch up. A few places yet to explore on the sword coast before moving to the City of Baldur's Gate.
