Where does the 10 APR come from? Non-fighters don't get the additional attacks from having more than one proficiency point in a weapon, so the fact that BBoD grants Grandmastery in Long Sword won't affect your APR.

I haven't tested, but he should be able to reach 10APR Shapeshifted. Spider + Boon + Improved Haste, Mind Flayer + Boon + Improved Haste.

This would limit him to BBoD scrolls though of course.

Best,

A.

You're right but he also said he'd be able to get to 10 apr while still being able to cast spells... And if you're going to abuse the bug with the dispellable weapons then you don't need Boon of Lathander to get 10 apr dual-wielding.

EDIT: sorry didn't see QED's last post. I wasn't aware that the Boon was bugged and stacked with itself.

I had assumed he meant "cast" via Triggers/Sequencer. Taking his fighters THACO via Holy Power rather than Tenser's would have let thim do that. Rereading his earlier post, it's clear that isn't what he intended. I had just glanced at the post, saw Priest-> Mage, Boon, 10APR, and the word "shapeshifted" and assumed that's what he meant.

It's evident he means Boon stacking now though.

Thanks.  I had a moment of thinking why on earth did I do something a bit different, but then consoled myself with the idea that if I only ever wanted to do exactly the same thing I wouldn't want to play any more anywayPosted Image.

@Grond0 - good luck with your new character! Off-hand I can't recall any wizard slayer toons that made it to the end of ToB and winning, so here's wishing you luck to be the 1st!

I appreciate the sentiment, though I'm sure I've got more chance of winning the lottery!

Piccolo got under way by checking to make sure that the wizard slayers spell failure chance was correctly being applied to ranged weapons.  That gave Piccolo a level coming out of Candlekeep as well as a negative AC.  That gave him the confidence to go straight to the Friendly Arm.  Bandits tried an ambush, but failed to hit him and he used Tarnesh for throwing practice on arrival.

He's just turned over the ogre's belt to Umshey - that's very unusual, but he can't use it anyway.  I found that rather disappointing.  I knew that wizard slayers are restricted to armour and weapons (+ healing potions), but thought the interpretation of armour would probably include belts.  If he's unable to use other ancillary bits of armour, such as gauntlets, this is going to be even tougher than I thought.

Edit: Feldepost's inventory shows bracers as unusable - quite how they fall outside the definition of armour I'm not sure, but hey-ho.  I didn't have much hope left, but just confirmed Meilum's gauntlets are not useable.

Also spell failure penalty does not seem to apply to sequencers, which seems a bit odd to me (implementation penalty does apply to sequencer spells from wild mages).  Also, either the clerics I've faced so far have been exceptionally lucky with their casts or they are not affected by the penalty - starting to think this class is virtually hopeless as a solo.

Edit2: a traveller tried to deny me the fruits of my labour in keeping a bear off him.  He got killed for his pains and, somewhat to my surprise, Piccolo can actually wear his boots - makes the omission of bracers even more baffling.  It also appears that green scrolls are useable, so things are not quite as bad as I was thinking they might be.  Piccolo is currently at level 6, still taking on the easier challenges in the south - probably go for the mines at level 7.

Update of BlackStrider & Co

Band Of Six washed clean Cloakwood Mines without issues (Yeslick joined company in Nashkel Inn). Davaeorn wasted his spells on summons and was beat by Jaheira in melee (no match naturally). Now Band performing in Baldur's Gate City. Big to-do list here...

to be continued...

Piccolo's now at level 7 and has completed pretty much everything that's relatively safe. He has bought all the equipment that looks like it might be helpful - which is a pretty limited selection. Essentially just green scrolls, healing potions and the hand and horn of Kazgoroth.

Yes - they seem to be counted as healing.  Basic healing, extra healing, antidotes and the combination antidote and healing are all allowed.  I was hoping that the unique red and violet potions would be allowed, but no such luck - that means that Piccolo won't be able to get the strength tome even if he makes it that far.

He's finished the Nashkel mines without any problems.  I was more concerned about the kobold shaman than Mulahey because of the lack of places to run.  Piccolo put up a horn protection to stop level 1 & 2 spells, but was potentially vulnerable to 3rd level like dire charm.  However, SCS mages virtually always start with their own protection - in the shaman's case mirror image and Piccolo found the correct image quickly to kill him before he started another spell.

Also used a charge from the horn to protect against Mulahey, but he went down pretty much as quickly (at level 7 and with true grandmastery tweak with daggers Piccolo has 3 attacks per round so eats his way through opponents pretty quickly).

Edit: Tranzig had his mirror image disrupted by a thrown dagger and quickly fell.  Next stop the bandit camp.

You could always recruit a thief just before talking to Duke Eltan and take potions with you if their pick locks not good enough, then kick them out after getting them out of the crypts. The extra body might be handy for looting too down there. (tho if you hack in bags would be unnecessary).

George, TN human male kensai. Travelling with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Coran and Yeslick.

Durlags Tower was simple. Sure, Coran couldn't deal with a few traps but we've cleared every enemy out. Kirinhale charmed Yeslick but Imoen had laid four traps, and I hit her before Coran dealt a fatal backstab. We can come back later to check the locked chests for Hurgans dagger.

Time for the coronation ceremony. As we head towards the exit Imoen suggests we investigate the cellar. Maybe after the coronation (ie when Coran improves his thieving skills).

More greater doppelgangers. We're buffed and do our best, but the guards kill the last doppelganger.

Belt and Liia have both survived, so I kai and move in on Sarevok when his treachery is exposed. He hits me twice and I try to move. I have to shove Yeslick out of the way as a third blow lands (4/77hp so only alive thanks to DUHM). Yeslick takes my place and we are saved by a guard who finally hits Sarevok.

The thieves maze is easy, then we are faced with Rahvin and co. They attack us but we are buffed.

I could, though I think I'll keep it as a solo and just accept that as part of the price of running a wizard slayer.

Piccolo has survived the bandit camp, though only just.  As usual the main concern was Venkt, the mage.  The idea was to run round the edge of the map until he appeared, then protect with horn of Kazgoroth and try and get a few quick attacks in on him.  When he did appear, Piccolo missed with all three of his knife attacks before running.  With space running out towards the south-east corner I thought Piccolo had enough of a lead to go north to the top of the map, but Venkt was able to cut enough of a corner to cast slow on him.

Now there were real problems - a horde of bandits on his heels, including Taugouz whacking him from behind, and a mage on the rampage.  Piccolo was very lucky in that his 7% magic resistance saved him from a hold person while his horn protection was down, but he was blinded.  Without being able to see where he was going he got trapped in a cul-de-sac before being able to renew the horn protection to dispel the blind.  Down to about 10 HPs It looked like curtains, but an extra-healing potion bought another round and he came out swinging with a critical on Taugouz.  Another couple of solid hits and he fell, opening up a potential escape route.
Posted Image

Another extra-healing potion made his prospects look a bit more rosy and he quickly hunted down Venkt.  Using his +2 poisoned dagger it only took a round or so to kill Venkt and he was then able to thread his way out through the crowd.
Posted Image
After that the rest was simple - just turning to fight periodically until all opponents were dead.

Next stop the cloakwood, where Piccolo will have to depend heavily on luck again. If ambushed by spiders before having the chance to get the spiders bane sword his prospects of survival are slim.

Piccolo survived the Cloakwood, although again more by luck than judgement.

There was an ambush after the first area, but only by ettercaps - no problem there.  On to the spider area - first up deal with the welcoming committee.  After carefully working through the traps, Piccolo poked his head into the spider's nest and rapidly withdrew - he had the horn protection up, but this proved to be no use against the spider webs (which bypass magic resistance).  First aim was to spread out the followers, led by the sword spiders, in order to deal with them separately.

The first giant spider to arrive webbed him.  In the picture the held symbol has already gone, but it was the best part of 2 rounds before he was able to move - by which time he was in desperate straits from the impact of poison.  There was then an infuriating delay of a few more seconds before he was able to take a potion - now down to 6 or 7 hits.  Fortunately this spider did not use web again before being taken out by thrown daggers and Piccolo had the chance to gulp down lots of healing potions.

The next spider tried a web, but Piccolo saved with a 10 - that's his required saving throw against spells, so I presume that the spider webs don't have the saving throw penalty of the web spell.  The third spider didn't even get a web off after being hit by a critical.  I thought that was all of them, but there was one more - fortunately saved this time as well.

After dealing with Centeol Piccolo picked up Chelak's body and returned it to his brother.  Now with the ability to use free action Piccolo was ready to sneer at any ambushing spiders - so naturally there were no ambushes at all in the remainder of the cloakwoodPosted Image (he avoided all action).

Next up in the dance with death will be the party outside the mines.

Edit: completed the mines - used a scroll of magic protection to get past the party, past Hareishan and all the way down to Daveorn and kill him.  Travelled back through the Cloakwood the whole way and not a single ambush - that means Piccolo travelled both ways with not a spider in sight after risking life and limb to get Spider's Bane!  I'll post some screenshots tomorrow if anyone is interested.

Just starting to think now that this might actually be possiblePosted Image.

George, TN human male kensai. Travelling with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Coran and Yeslick.

My legs are tired so Sarevok it is. Spells, potions, scrolls and weapons are readied. We elect not to cast area spells until we are attacked, and not to use any buffer summons. Jaheira insists we have a pair of woodland nymphs on our side.

Coran shoots at Sarevok, misses and retreats. Yeslick, Imoen and Jaheira immediately cast web and entangle. Sarevok closes in on us, and reaches past Yeslick to prod me twice (4/63hp). Yeslick asks why I hadn't cast DUHM. Good question, I ask him the same. Neither of us has buffed so we're going to have to do this the hard way (I'm thinking this is about to go downhill rapidly).

I retreat and try to throw an enchanted axe with little success. Coran has dispelled Semaj's protections but we are distracted onto Sarevok to give Yeslick some slack. Semaj re-establishes some protections so Coran dispels them again and kills him.
Posted Image

Coran dispels protections from Angelo, Khalid kills Tazok.
Posted Image

Khalid kills Angelo.
Posted Image

Sarevok is held, covered in insects and getting a hail of arrows and axes. We have plenty more to give but Sarevok cannot survive a trio of magic missiles cast by Imoen.
Posted Image

George, kensai 7. 294 kills, greater wolfwere.
Yeslick, fighter 6 cleric 7. 45 kills, Tamoko.
Khalid, fighter 7. 200 kills, Angelo.
Jaheira, fighter 6 druid 7. 111 kills, Tuth.
Coran, fighter 7 thief 7. 112 kills, greater basilisk.
Imoen, thief 6 mage 7 (8 after Semaj). 50 kills, Sil.

(Sarevok almost caught me out both times, luckily Yeslick survived thanks to the area effects holding Sarevok. Will take a brief gap to think about how to mitigate the big hitters in SOA).

Coltan the halfling thief - more action in the City of Baldur's Gate:

More encounters. Thanks to our good money supply been using acid arrows and lightning crossbow bolts, this has served us in good stead. Some incidents of note:

* Coltan decided to try a backstab on a thief. Though it was his best this game, still pretty weak (19 pts). No wonder I don't do it much.
* We tried to talk to Jardak but he was having none of it. He lasted a few rounds but he couldn't even get a single hit on Ajantis, and fell. Garrick IDed the helm of glory and Khalid will now use putting his AC to -3.
* For Ramazith's tower Khalid and Ajantis duoed it. Threw in a strength potion heroism, and free action on Ajantis (for the ghasts) and Khalid alternating between spider's bane and his bow as appropriate. They did well though Khalid went through all his heal potions, will need to get some more. As for Ramazith himself, he didn't fare too well.. Magic missiles from both Imoen and Garrick were just too much for him (not to mention the missiles peppering him). No one needed the INT tome, so just gave it to Coltan.
* Here are my stats so far. Note a change in avatar, the picture I was using was a bit old.

Good luck in everyone's else's runs and congrats on taking down Sarevok Gate70!

He certainly had, but that's just been balanced by a strong smell of cheese from the AI.

Piccolo had no trouble in Baldur's Gate - the Iron Throne battle is pretty easy if you're willing to make use of the stairs to avoid spells (which he was).  On his return to Candlekeep he put up fire and lightning protection (I had several green scrolls of both) in order to be able to loot one of the tombs safely (even with DUHM he had no chance with the ones with tomes in).  However, I decided he would just run past everything in the catacombs, rather than use up the really irreplaceable scrolls.  That seemed to work perfectly and as he rose up out of the ground the basilisks had been left way behind - so it was a bit of a shock to see them appear immediately behind himPosted Image.  If I'd paused the game on exit from the area (which I do normally do automatically) there might have just been time to run away before the basilisks' attack activated, but the 1/2 second or so delay in getting him moving proved costly as one of the basilisks launched its stare before he was out of range.  Of course if I had known they were coming there would probably also have been time to read his one and only scroll of protection from petrification, but I suspect the opportunity to do that was lost by the same fractional hesitation as doomed his run for safety.

Again, something of a shame to lose at such a late stage - Piccolo had collected up 4 protection from magic scrolls (including the one just taken from the catacombs) and I was starting to feel confident about his chances for the first time in the game.  This really is a game of 'if only' isn't itPosted Image.

Edit: couldn't resist loading the autosave to check what happened.  The reason why he was not paused on exit is that the end of chapter dialogue triggers then and obviously overrode the pause command.  However, as I thought, there would have been time for him to either run or read the scroll, but for that (even allowing for the teleporting basilisks).

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your petrification, Grond0. While a wizard slayer statue might beautify the landscape, I don't think that was the contribution you wanted your character to ultimately make!
