Update of BlackStrider & Co

Well, big to-do list is done. Completed all City quests (except stealing Arkion & Nemphre jewelry - don't want unnecessary risk in no-reload..., and only explored sewers under east gate area). All went quite smooth. The only battle that made me nerve is on top of Iron Throne building. Began with Web, Entangle & Horror. Half of enemies were disabled. Then some fireballs and oils of burning went onto the place. Meanwhile Naaman (if I'm right here) confused my archers - Coran & Khalid and exotic Viconia's appearance drew heighten attention towards her - she got some flamestrikes and flame arrows. While confused Khalid stood still Coran rained Imoen with compliments (i.e. arrows). But in the end Band managed this fight without casualties:

Now back to the Candlekeep.

Current Band Of Six state:
BlackStrider - lead quitar, vocal (growling) - Cleric 7 / Illusionist 7
Jaheira - bass - Fighter 7 / Druid 8
Khalid - drums - Fighter 8
Imoen - keyboard - Thief 6 / Mage 8
Viconia - lead vocal - Cleric 7
Coran - promotion - Fighter 6 / Thief 6

to be continued...

Grates Gate70, are you going to dual him... & sorry about Jaheira killing Tuth.

I started with a druid in mind. Thief has exploit merits so will avoid that, cleric doesn't appeal. The more I think about it the more I'm tempted to try and reach the fighter HLA's.

Brief update on soloing elven Fighter / Mage / Thief Syroluin:
Syroluin completed many sidequests available in Baldur’s Gate. He obtained tomes increasing dexterity and wisdom and found Helm of Balduran.
He worked for Scar and duke Eltan. Eventually, the investigation of Iron Throne activities led him to their base.Fight with mercenaries guarding the top floor was easy one; Syroluin was Hasted a protected by Mirror Image. He used his stealth ability in various hiding spots and ambushed enemies with Necklace of Missiles.

Posted Image

Though the Necklace was spent during the fight, it was worth it; Syroluin emerged victorious and he is currently on the way to Candlekeep.

Thanks, V! Same to you! Wish to meet you there :)

Band Of Six arrived to the Candlekeep and met some old friends there. After reading numerous books in the Library they were falsely accused in murdering Iron Throne leaders and were forced to fight their way to freedom through Candlekeep Catacombs. As usual Pink Ninja scouted ahead invisible so there were no problems in dispatching on-road *obstacles*.

Now it is time for Durlag's Tower Tour.

Rapture was doing fine for most of the game. She didn't really face any significant threat apart from that one druid. Her general strategy was to use Wand of the Heavens and weapons for damage, and Animate Dead as a meat shield. Sadly, she failed to save Belt from the doppelgangers and was promptly assassinated.

Bummer about that rapture. Just so you know fear/sleep works well there because even if it gets the flaming fist mercenaries they won't turn hostile

Quite a few runs have ended at that point, so you're in good company in that respect.

That's probably true. I should have prepared far better. I've never actually played Baldur's Gate 1 beyond roughly the Bandit Camp before, so I didn't know this battle would be so easy to lose. If I get the time I will try a Gnome Illusionist/Thief. Mages seem to have much better spells and wands at this point in the game. I also really want the ability to remove traps. Rapture could detect them, but had to walk straight into many of them.

QED, the coronation is the only keep someone alive battle. If you know what to expect, a cleric with BG1 summoning (send them in first to surround the dukes) hugely reduces the risk of failure.

Well done for getting that far solo with limited experience of the game and good luck with your next attempt.

Just a thought - you are almost at the end of the game. It would be well worth your time to understand both the remaining enemies and traps instead of coming unstuck in another run.

@QED:
Just so you know if you have (Open Bracket)url=http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/6055/baldr006.png(Closed Bracket) (your description)(Open Bracket)/url(Closed Bracket) then readers could just click on your link to see the pictures. This way you could also describe it better such as "Palace Battle" for your description

I also fully agree with @Gate70, if you haven't seen the end the game, keep doing this run, this will be invaluable to prepare you for your next no-reload. I was having trouble in ToB, so I took a run (with reloads) to the end, and helped a lot for my future no-reloads.

The coronation took two more tries. The trick was to block the doppelgangers away from Belt with summons. The rest of the game went without any big problems. I finished the maze and killed Sarevok without dying.

@QED, I've done a completely identical character (he's pretty far along in BG2 already), with unmodded Doppelgangers, but with BG2 style summoning. I did have a few skeleton summoned, but the key was to use a Wand of Sleep every round for a few rounds. This will usually put a few of the doppelgangers to sleep(*). An alternative is to meta-game a little so that you get the Horror Bhaalspawn power -- using that you can usually get a few of them to flee.

(*) Helpfully this will also make belt and the soldiers completely ignore the sleeping doppelgangers so you can get all the EXP for yourself.

Coltan's contuing adventures in the City of Baldur's Gate:

Coltan and the party continue to explore Baldur's Gate. Fairly dangerous place, the Flaming Fist doesn''t do a great job of enforcing order. For example, why would the city grant entrance to a Ogre Berserker? We entered the Blushing Mermaid and found a powerful Ogre Berserker named Larze. However Coltan had the foresight to do several things: 1) protection from evil on Ajantis 2) Switched Khalid to sword and shield rather than spider's bane 3) Haste for the party, and the most important of all, 4) switched order of party members, rear members in front, tanks in back. Why? Because as we enter the "rear" was facing Larze. What foresight to have the party's tanks there! (leader notes: I have had numerous chunked party members here - I hit him with everything now).

So the party opens with Wand of Heavens from Branwen, magic missiles from Garrick/Imoen, +2 bullet from Coltan and melee from Ajantis and Khalid. Larze gets a good hit on Khalid, and survives first round. We repeat same strategy 2nd round and he couldn't survive.. Ajantis took a beating but is alive so that is OK.

As we were exploring the city, a iron throne assassin says we were poisoned in our sleep. He says he will give 1/2 the andtidote to us if we cure him of his geas. This sounds fair, but in order to do that Jalantha Mistmyr needed to help us. We didn't trust her so had her give us the cure, then told her we didn't have the wisdom book she wanted. This made her mad, but fell quickly to power's melee/ranged power. No priestess saw that so they stayed neutral. This was fine by us. We also got a pleasant result: Garrick made level 8. It's been so long since someone leveled, forgot that still happens!

So we gave the cure to his geas to the Iron Throne Assassin at the Blade and Stars. He said the 2nd half was at Blushing Mermaid. We head there and go upstairs and encountered Marek. We didn''t think he would last long, so we just meleed whlie Coltan tried to backstab. He did indeed die fast, but not before THIS happened. [Leader notes: I always thought Marek was a thief -- apparently he's a thief/mage, I will never take him lightly again) Yep 1/2 the party confused, with a bunch of neutrals in the area! And worse, the only person who has a dispel magic memorized is Garrick and he is confused! Ah man reputation hit here I come.

[leader note: I turned off the AI). There's nothing to do until the confusion wears off. We stand there, but then Khalid targets Imoen. i try to have her run to the stairs, but Khalid is just too good an archer and kills her before she can do that. I try to pick up her stuff (she had a lot). Meanwhile the confused party members are killing civilians then complaining about our actions. Reputation is toast.

After Imoen's stuff is picked up we rush to the Temple of Helm in the North/North part of Baldur's Gate. Strangely nobody complained about our reputation while we were traveling there (possibly because the AI was off). So we dutifully donate 9500 gold (500 gold at a time) to the temple, and got our reputation to 18 - no one left the party (whew). We resurrect Imoen, equip her. I then realized I forgot to loot Marek, especially his nice shortbow which would be a great upgrade to Imoen (you can probably guess what happens next...). So we head back to the Blushing Mermaid go upstairs, and then the party just inexplicably opens fire on the civilians, dropping our reputation to 6! (leader's note: forgot to turn off AI and that the citizens would be hostile). We quickly loot Marek's stuff, Imoen and Ajantis complain and head back to the temple of helm and donate yet another 9500 gold. (leader's note: glad our gold situation is so much better than last run's).

Fortunately the party is none the worse for wear, other than being a lot poorer. We did some tasks for the local thieve's guild, which put us in good standing with them. You can't have too many friends, especially with the amount of enemies we have.

Couldn't make up my mind whether to try another character or give the game a rest for a while.  However, I think I still owe BG1 a bit of a kicking so I've started this one.
Posted Image
As I didn't feel particularly attracted to any character this one seems suitable - leaves open the possibility of dualling to thief, cleric or druid in BG2. I'm hoping she proves more than a forlorn hope, but we'll see.  So far she's just done a few of the normal early game quests around Beregost and has just gone to level 4.

Good luck with your character Grond0. Thanks to a fighter's use of a bow and potions, you can definitely solo the game with a fighter. I did it once (albeit with a number of reloads). And arguably a fighter is the best class to dual from, since you get the extra 1/2 attack at 7 plus if you dual at 9 your newly dualed character will have lots of HP (always good for a no-reload, though massive HP didn't help Zallon).

The continuing adventures of Coltan the halfling thief...

We were talking to Gorpel Hind and all of a sudden a group called the Mountain Maulers confronted us and provoked us. Apparently they didn't see the two squads of skeletons near them. The party took these guys down pretty fast, though again the magic missiles of the 2 arcane in the party speeds up the kills considerably. The +2 axe went to Khalid, just in case we want him to use sword and shield. He has been 2 hand sword + composite bow for most of the game.

We entered one house and found a lot of powerful enemies, doom guards and invisible stalkers and others. We summoned some fodder, then hit them with all the magic missiles and wand of heaven attacks that we could. This was working well.. We did have to summon another batch of summons, but our tenacity paid off.

Degrodel wanted us to get the Helm of Balduran. He apparently didn't notice Khalid wearing it on his head. The way Degrodel wanted us to get it seemed wrong to us, however, so we made him pay for his would-be evil doing with his life.

It was time for us to talk to Scar and investigate the Iron Throne. Everybody in the building said the 5th floor was key but also said there were some mean persons there. Khalid volunteered to take them down himself. We gave him the cloak of displacement and boots of avoidance to make him near immune to missile attacks. We loaded up the arrows of detonation we had in stock for just such an occassion. Khalid walked up the stairs and started firing. He did not stop until resistance had ended. His attack was wildly successful as he took no damage.

We reported the news to Duke Eltan and he sent us to Candlekeep to follow-up on our findings. We picked up a lot of magic scrolls in the library, Garrick managed to memorize haste without an intelligence potion, we were shocked at that. We found a few dopplegangers in various parts of the keep. But when we got to the 5th floor we got arrested, accused of killing the Iron Throne leaders which we did not do.

While in jail, Tethoril visisted us and had mercy and sent us to the Candlekeep Crypts. After destroying a bunch of ghasts with fire, Coltan feels more capable (leader notes: he leveled to 9. Strangely, Imoen as mage has as much HP as our lead tank Ajantis - 46 hp!)

We encountered many skeletons and dopplegangers, but they were no match. Coltan even took down all the skeletons himself using necklace of missiles. However, deeper in we met a group led by Prat. Ajantis has 100% fire resistance. So Branwen gave him a few buffs, such as protection from lightning and othes, while Ajantis himself used potions like strength and haste and a magic blocking potion. Ajantis equipped the arrows of detonation and fired until there was no resistance. Took an amazing 10 arrows but eventually Prat's goons fell. We found a +2 throwing axe, which we gave to Ajantis for a range weapon when he is using sword and shield (which is almost always).

We encountered some basilisks. So Ajantis gulped a potion of mirror eyes, and Garrick thought he would be funny and fireball Ajantis severa times with a wand since Ajantis had 100% fire resistance. This was effective.

We finally escaped the crypts. We will head to Friendy Arm Inn to sell and then to Baldur's Gate to seek out Sarevok, he must be there somewhere.

Durga, Zerker/Thief (Final)

It took considerably longer for Durga to complete BG1 due to a change in plans. Instead of finishing as a zerker, she finished as a zerker 5/thief 9, and instead of going solo, she took Imoen, Kagan, Coran, and Viconia along all the way to the end.

However, the run went pretty smoothly due to a heavily ranged party, with a decent Tank (Kagan) and Cleric (Viconia). It was a fun but uneventful run, and there was nothing of deep interest to report. Durga is now on her way to Athkatla. See you there.

Summary of progress for Forlorn:
- parted Meilum from his bracers
- reunited Tenya with her bowl
- fertilised a farmer's fields with some zombies
- bought the greenstone amulet and cloak of displacement and relieved Dushai of the ring of free action
- thwarted Greywolf
- showed Zal and Vax what a real missile weapon can do
- reunited a boy with his dog
- demonstrated to Sendai why you should be polite to strangers
- slept through the Nashkel mines
- had a shocking experience in the valley of the tombs (hit by lightning in a storm twice in quick succession - fortunately had been taking healing potions in the middle)
- Nimbul was beaten to death with the help of some well-disposed guards
- Tranzig was chased (or chasing) up and down the stairs
Forlorn is now at level 6 and heading for the bandit camp.

Edit: with the green amulet and ring of free action protecting against most of the dangerous spells and effects, Forlorn has been rapidly mopping up the areas prior to Cloakwood.  Done everything of benefit to him and bought most of the potentially useful equipment available (not ring of invisibility).  Now capped at 161k XP and is just heading to pick up Spider's Bane (it would useful to have this to allow a ring slot to be released for something else).

Congrats, angiras! Luck in SoA.
Sorry for such end, QED!
Luck to everyone still active :)

Band Of Six made it through top levels of Durlag's Tower and first underground. Love hit badly Jaheira with two Skull Traps but she managed to survive with few HP left. Aside that everything is quite smooth even if rather slow - there are LOT of traps here so Band advance very careful.

You got Mirror Eyes potions for the Basilisks this time, Grond0? Perhaps playing "tag" like you did last time isn't the best strategy for Basilisks...Pretty amazing how you've almost caught up to Coltan - Coltan just has to get the evidence on Sarevok, invitation, the palace battle, etc.

Update of BlackStrider & Co

Band Of Six made their way to the final level of Durlag's Tower. Alas Viconia & Coran fell on chessboard... So Band returned to Nashkel, fallen duo rose from the dead and now comrades in arms resting in Nashkel Inn.

I had them, but just went through all of the catacombs invisible, as soon as Forlorn had got the tomes.  She cashed in treasure from the tombs and purchased the ring of invisibility.  Back in Baldurs Gate I had initially intended her to go invisible to rescue Duke Eltan, but didn't want to use up 2 charges of her new ring - so just punched her way through the Flaming Fist mercenaries.  No problem with Tamoko, except that her remove magic made Forlorn use 2 potions of magic shielding (she's still got loads of supplies left though).

Now on the way to confront Slythe & Kristin...

Edit: and now off to the palace.  Dragged the fight out trying to get Kristin to kill Quenash for me (just on style grounds), but she wouldn't oblige and I eventually had to finish both of them off.

Edit2: rather than try and pull some of the dopplegangers away I thought Forlorn could kill them quickly enough in hand to hand - and so it proved.  Liia died, but Belt survived to send me after Sareok.  Just spent my last gold on healing potions and crunched through the maze.  Used a scroll of magic protection to go through the party and Tamoko and am now in the temple.

Edit3: drat - Semaj and Tazok are down, but the others won't appear - this seems to be a perennial bug with my installations.  I did CLUA them in on a previous occasion, but that wasn't very satisfying, so I think I'll just leave this game here (I knew something had to go wrong!).

Coltan the halfling thief - final BG 1 Update

So it's time for us to get the evidence on Sarevok. We travel exclusively in the sewers. Cynthia was beat by skeletons, slythe by dispelling his buffs (though Ajantis had a sliver of live when Slythe fell). We rescued Duke Eltan.

Time for us confront the assassins at the Palace.  We put skeletons inbetween the dukes and the greater dopplegangers. The party was hasted, Imoen cast a slow, Branwen and Garrick used their fear wands. Imoen followed up with emotion, then it was damage all the way. Both dukes survived and success!

We followed Sarevok in the maze, and then the unthinkable happened - Ajantis was chunked by a green slime! (and this was WITH an protetion from acid scroll active!) Poor Ajantis! To die so close to the end of our quest. Branwen volunteered to take the front lines with Khalid. Khalid put away his bow for now. We decided we would NOT replace him. Anyone we got would be so low level compared to the rest of the party, not to mention would have to equip them. The party is still strong enough to take down Sarevok. So the party presses on through the maze. Coltan did excellent thief work and we got through the maze with little trouble.

So for the Undercity, Khalid got to 100% fire resistance, protection from lightning, haste and strength potion, and potion of magic blocking. Armed with arrows of detonation, he took down a Iron Throne party. He also proceeded a little further down the road and met Tamoko - she wouldn't listen to reason and Khalid pumped her full of arrows of detonation - she couldn't get a spell off. Her armor went to Branwen.

Time to rest up. We rest by the temple of Bhaal and then enter. I put protection from magic on Coltan, haste boots for him, protection from fire (via scroll) on everyone else except Khalid since he still had 100% resistance. Three squads of skeletons all around the party.

Garrick was given the honor of first strike. He moved up to the left, casting a dispel magic then fireball via wand. The ran back to the party with haste and waited to see who would come. Just Sarevok and Semaj. Thanks to Garricks dispel magic, Semaj didn't' have any buffs active - he fell shortly.

Sarevok was playing with our skeletons. We peppered him with +2 bullets, arrrows of biting, wand of heavens, magic missiles from Imoen, and crossbow bolts of ligtning from Garrick - Success!

As I am doing a Trilogy no-reload, moving to BG 2.
Coltan's final character sheet
