Gate and Corey, thank you for the tips. They are very much welcome. This will be my fourth time through BG1 since I played it for the first time this past spring so I'm not worried about being spoiled
After reading your strategy about solo leveling, Gate, I'm considering rerolling but feel a little conflicted. Arccos III successfully took down Tarnesh but only at the high cost of Imoen's life. Bringing her back broke the bank.
Is the solo leveling approach worth a reroll?

I gave Imoen the dodge; I plan on picking her up later, possibly, and she'll be a higher level then. Besides, I have no points in bows, so I may as well use darts (though 2-damage criticals make me sad).AnonymousHero wrote...
Start by buying a lot of arrows at Candlekeep. Imoen will give you a bow.
Unfortunately, not in my game, thanks to my own version of SCS's Faster Bears.SLOW SLOW bears... which you can handily kill using arrows, you fast fast CHARNAME you!
Avoiding wolves probably is sound advice, though. The 65 XP I got from the Candlekeep wolf wasn't worth the two potions I quaffed. It was sort of a matter of pride, though, after it killed Erthallin the First.

He calmes Marl, but a fit of dark rage sees him killing Algernon for no apparent reason. He gets a nice cloak and is 5 XP off L2, but it puts his reputation down to 7. Luckily, helping Firebead improves matters. That and the Dudleys give him the XP to reach L2.
On the South Road, Erthallin meets an ogrillion. He's still poorly equipped, with leather armour, darts and a short sword where he should have splint, at least, daggers and a bastard sword. As such, the battle goes slowly, and when the ogrillion gets in a lucky hit for 11hp (enough to kill Erthallin were he still L1), I beat a hasty retreat back to Beregost. With only 91gp, I think he may be resting there awhile (i.e. 11 days), since he can't really afford proper medical treatment. I'm thinking I may bypass the ogrillions and get the Bhaalspawn power from Ch 2 first. The Nashkel Store may be cheaper than Thunderhammer Smithy, too, though the reputation is partly to blame for that (daggers went from 42gp to 47!).

That’s news to me… Rangers got a bit scrambled in the rush to get the game released on time, that’s why their stronghold has so many bugs & Valgar (one of my favourite npc) is missing much of his story progression… but I digress;
It’s simple to fix with shadow, just open your save and change the kit from stalker to any thing else (even nothing). Now log back into bg2 & dual as normal… save and put stalker back in the kit box.
The entire process takes about 30 seconds and does not alter any of your character/ kit abilities.

Not if you're enjoying the game. Levelling with charname and Imoen will be fairly quick. It's really noticable when you get towards a full party as you could end up in Nashkel mine at level 1 and are arrow fodder.Chaseroy wrote...Is the solo leveling approach worth a reroll?
Thanks for the G3 mod clarification Grond0, I assumed it was viewed as a tweak rather than a fix. I assume the G3 positioning takes the SOA behaviour as correct rather than TOB.The G3 BG2 Fixpack allows you to dual archers and stalkers for anyone
that doesn't fancy using shadowkeeper. The Tweak Pack gives this option
for barbarians and wild mages <snip>
If you can dual barbarian to wild mage I'm going to have to change my install and give it a no reload bash. edit - just realised that duals kit to kit so can't be done. Oh well.

Got to Nashkel and got the Bhaalspwan Larloch's power, and then headed back to get the reputation bonus from Oublek. I'm going to leave Noober and the BGQE quests for now because I'm only about 400 XP off L3, when I want to dual, and I would like to save some easy XP to get up to Druid 2. To that end I'm off to rescue Melicamp, though I need to heal up first. On the upside, I got a skull and some daggers which will be useful in the fight with the wolf. Erthallin is still quite poor, but on the upside he has Mirianne's ring (putting his AC to 3), having finally killed the ogrillions on the road (took a couple of attempts, though).
If all things go well, he'll kill the wolf and get Melicamp, reach L3 shortly after and dual to Druid, then return Melicamp and do Noober and the other quests for a quick boost to L2. With a point in missile weapons and Entangle spells, quests like Joia's should also be easy, so it shouldn't be long 'till L3 (hopefully). Then maybe I'll pick up some help and head into the mines. Of course, lots of things could go wrong. The wolf could kill me. Melicamp could die. I could be waylaid by bandits and killed. We'll soon see though, I guess.

Nashkel mine can wait until I have some more funds and equipment. Four half-ogres (for Bjornin) are first before I risk facing Bassilus (errm madness even at level 5, but we shall see).
I miss my backstab and run. My dwarven constitution shrugs off a rigid thinking spell so I escape, rest up and return.
This time I land a PB. I've raced round one of the stone pillars and hidden as my poison disrupts his spell. My next attack misses and he hits me with his warhammer so I hide behind a second pillar. My third backstab lands, and I hide behind another pillar while he casts hold person. I shrug this off and return for a final backstab.
A PB eliminates Caldo, and after a rest I land a perfect PB on Krumm.

At Nashkel carnival I PB Zordral and continue bluntly administering poison until he expires. Ardrouine watches as I outrun and backstab three worgs for her, then I return to Beregost, kill Karlat and (gulp) face Silke.
She attacks me when I refuse to kill three merchants. I laugh as two snares injure her, and frown as my poisoned attack misses. Run. RUN. I'm out of sight when a lightning bolt scythes into me (30/31hp lost haha), so cure my wounds, hide and return for another PB.

I want to talk to Garrick but a short delay is required (almost levelled up and want him to level too if possible). What, or who, can I do to learn some more.
(missed screenshot of Arghain being PB'd but surviving to chase me).
The poison finishes Arghain off before I can hide and return, and his companions provide me with the experience I desire so it is back to Garrick. I ask him to inspect the chest of unidentifiable loot, then leave him examining while I sell what I can.
I am rich for a fleeting moment but new armour, cloak, dagger, quarterstaff and amulet soon leave me poorer than when I left Candlekeep.

All I need to purchase now is the ring of invisibility and whatever potions or arrows I may need in future.

Krap, CG male dwarven assassin.
Meilum? He's going to be tough. Sure enough, my snare only injures him and I have to run a gauntlet of kobold arrows. We race across the huge bridge before I get a chance to PB him.

After a very long chase I manage to finish the job.

Garrick can't identify the bracers so we buy an identify scroll which he fails to memorise. I have to sell his armour, sword and crossbow and two potions to buy another scroll. He wastes that too. I force him to gulp a potion of thievery and steal Algernon's cloak, then check. No scrolls in any of the stores. Grumble grumble.
Nashkel mine then. Almost immediately I encounter kobolds but my sneak attacks against them (+13) give me reasonable confidence. A snare saves miner Beldin.

I backstab the next kobold only to be critically hit (-7, 10 damage) by a second. I hide and return to backstab it (53 damage) then return a dagger to miner Kylee. I'm certain I could work my way through these kobolds but sneak past them instead.
I find a corpse, and take his greenstone ring in case it helps identify him. A nearby trap is followed by two more on a bridge which I disable without raising the attention of nearby kobolds (detect, hide, dismantle, retreat twice). I pass through kobolds, spiders and a kobold commando before clearing three more traps and proceeding to the next level.
(n.b. assassin level 6 skills and saves are as below; just about enough in each area so far)

I clear three more kobolds and a commando out before heading into a small sub-cave and killing four more. I set three snares inside, resting outside in the shadows whenever I fail to set them.
Mulahey may pretend to be friendly but he's not fooling me.

He runs away badly injured as four battered skeletons close in (if I'd moved to the SE wall I may have been able to hide again). I soon have them dismantled and sneak after a scared Mulahey.

Xan wants to join, but as I watch him equip his sword in his off-hand I decline. Instead I sneak past two jellies and head back to Nashkel after an outdoor nap. Another shady character literally jumps out of his boots.

Tranzig has information at Feldeposts inn so I go there. As I pass Garrick he labels two pairs of boots, so I hand him a magical short-sword in return. I snare the stairs, switch to the dagger of venom and launch an improved PB at Tranzig.

I nip outside the room, hide and return. Tranzig is scared and has good reason to be when I switch to my quarterstaff.

A letter on his body mentions bandits in Peldvale and Larswood. Teven quickly realises it is better to have me working with him than against.

Welcome to a world of pain "boss". Tazok seems immune to poison so back to the quarterstaff.

As soon as Tazok allows me to join he clears off so I start to thin the bandits down. Eight are dead before I reach Ardenor Crush. He survives the first backstab but not the second.

Four more bandits and I draw Taugosz Khosann out. I ignore him and fell Credus. Five more bandits are dropped, while I am hit by one arrow and once by Taugosz. Now it's my turn.

He dies from the second backstab (think this is the easiest kill I've ever had with him).

My backpack is getting heavy so I return to Beregost and sell what I can, then return to the camp. There is one bandit left near the main tent, and my backstab fails. We fight for a while until I realise I will lose, then I give him the slip and backstab him. All this has done is show me that I'll have a fight on my hands inside the tent so I'm going to even the odds.
I pre-poison my weapon, hide (3rd attempt) and enter the tent. Venkt looks easiest so I backstab him with the dagger of venom and challenge them to step outside. They don't follow so I sneak back in, backstabbing Raemon as my poison finishes Venkt.

Raemon dies as I reach the door, and this time Britik and Hakt follow. Hakt is next.

Britik survives a backstab, and as I close in for a second strike the poison beats me to it.

My looting reveals the location of a secret mine in Cloakwood. Sounds fun.

I grab a cloak from a group of tasloi and sneak further into Cloakwood. I can smell the traps but can't see them, so use stealth to trigger them. I evade the first one and return to backstab a group of huge spiders. It is hard work especially when I fail to hide but they are soon dead.
I'm caught by a second trap but escape quickly. Then I lure ettercaps one by one to their death, taking a bit longer than the spiders due to failed hides and often requiring two backstabs (level 7 assassin after getting 4 of them).
I sneak all the way to Cloakwood mine and after dealing with a pair of guards observe four mercenaries led by Kysus. They're waiting for me so I snare the bridge and check for surprises before introducing myself. There is a guard dealing in Black Lotus, he's dead now. As is the guard at the mine entrance, meaning it's just me and the four amigos.
I want to start with a mage but Drasus looks fast, real fast. Hopefully I can hit him with a double poisoned backstab. Nice, but no time to gloat. Run.

Off we go, Drasus charging into my snare and injuring Genthore too. Genthore is closest but I have time to hide just as Drasus moves in. I pop in another backstab as Kysus teleports in (or in hindsight maybe just breaks invisibility), which is a problem. I'm running but Drasus is chasing and Kysus has cast confusion. I chug the potion of clarity taken from Winthrop's and keep running (didn't see a saving throw so assume no save is allowed - that was close).
I can't hide as Drasus is too fast, and I end up in a corner. I decide to fight until I have to flee, but to my surprise I hit him with a lucky shot and he crumples.

(right choice there, he'd have prevented me hiding if I'd hit anybody else).
I should hide, but I move to grab his equipment. Kysus has followed and spots me as does Rezdan. A flame arrow hits for minimal damage as I attack Kysus, and Rezdan casts horror. They follow with horror and Melfs acid arrow, then Kysus is down and I'm on Rezdan.

I gulp a blue potion as he drains me twice, then poison my blade and stick it to him. His next spell fails and my next stab ends his life. Now, where is Genthore.

He's going to struggle to run in armour, but he tries. I miss first time with my quarterstaff and he shrugs off my next hit.

Finally he succumbs, I don't mind losing a blue potion but had wanted to save the potion of clarity for later. Good job I didn't as I'd have been toast without it.

(that was enjoyable, a tense moment when I didn't know what spells were coming - will try and remember them in future).

Cloakwood mine, I feel like I am at home even with all the intruders. They should know better than to chase a dwarven assassin round dark tunnels. I reckon I could sneak right past Hareishan and guards but there's a principle at stake here. So I clear out a couple of ghasts, free Yeslick and the slaves then open all the doors. Do I feel lucky? Huh. Huh. Fairly lucky, succeeding with two snares.
A double poison backstab (DPB) for Hareishan? I'm hit by an arrow as I run.

A second arrow lands as I near a corner so I glug a blue potion and hide. My traps only kill one guard so I cure my injuries somewhat then start to hunt down stragglers. They're bunching but I pick a few off and manage to hide each time (a fireball potion is tempting).
I loot Hareishan at this point, and find a potion of explosions but may as well save that for another occassion as all the archers are dead. I miss my next backstab and the last four guards corner me (corridors are great for assassins but ultimately the pathing makes it risky), so I lunge and poison one. As he dies I hide around another corner and dispose of the last three one after another.
I sneak past a welcoming committee at the next entrance, backstabbing one hobgoblin which moves after me. (The path to Natasha is blocked so I ignore her and head for Davaeorn).
My backpack is almost full, but I'll continue and store any excess items. Davaeorn has a guard, but two backstabs have him gurgling his last. I remove two traps but cannot detect a third and take some damage. Davaeorn hears the commotion and we trade insults. I retreat to hide, switch to the cloak of non-detection, check my weapon and prepare to attack.
Another trap (saved), or maybe the previous one keeps going. Anyway, I backstab him and an image drops. Then a second time. This is dangerous so I think about how I used to practice against Gorion. The images will run out soon so I start looting his spell stores then convince Stephan to spill the beans in the false belief that Davaeorn is dead.
The mirror images are lasting a long time, either he's a very high level mage or he's a cheat. I'm not really equipped against his spells but I try another backstab. He decides to melee me (wonder if it's because of the cloak). Ha ha, time for hide and seek.
He's so slow I can stab and be around a corner into the shadows before he chases. Bye.

I decide to leave the mine as-is for the time being, and see if I can get to Baldurs Gate. I can, so I dump a load of valuables into a small barrel outside the thieves headquarters (don't you steal it now) and read a tome of dexterity.
Stats etc.

I want’s my stealth back before tackling the mines so we ran around doing minor chores like pickpocketing a cloak, rescued Galtok from Kobolds (found his wand of frost), swiped a wand of monster summon from some Ghasts & clearing the Xvart village… the Kobold sharman & chief got tangled up and where effortlessly picked off with arrows/ slings. A shot from the wand of summons (ogres) made Mulahey a walk over.

The current group is;
Gabrielle stalker 2- Cleric 3, Khalid level 3 fighter, Imoen is level 4 thief with 100 find traps, Kivan ranger level 3, Dynaheir invoker level 3 & Xan enchanter level 4.

loot;
Bracers of dexterity, Ring of Protection +1 & Girdle of Bluntness, Algernon's Cloak, Ring of Protection +1, Longsword +2, Shield amulet, Boots of grounding, Ring of wizardry, Wand of summon & Frost, Ring of fire resist, Ring of holiness, Boots of the North, Flail+1, Wand of sleep & Necklace of missiles.

On the way, he was ambushed by Bandits and I seriously feared for his life. He didn't even have his Larloch's left, which could have tipped the balance in his favour thanks to the +4 health it seems to give consistantly. Thankfully, he survived, taking only two hits. That belt probably saved his life (even with his mere Studded Leather he has an AC of -2 vs Missile and -1 vs Piercing).
Tymora seemed to be smiling on him as Melicamp was restored successfully, jumping him straight to L2 Druid. He's lost the Fighter's THAC0 and proficiencies, but with the same 21 health (another mediocre roll of 4+1) he had before and 2nd-level Druid spells, he seems to be reasonably capable. As such, I decided to risk taking on Karlat in the Red Sheaf in Beregost; Entangle is more useful here than even three Fighter levels. Aside from the 270 XP I got from killing him, I'm now able to complete Perdue's quest (for another 500 XP and 50gp) and the Slime Quest from BGQE (also 500 XP, as well as +1 Reputation and a net 100gp). Next stop Nashkel, for Noober and enough XP to reach L3.

Noober gor Erthallin to L3. Unfortunately, a mis-click lead to him saying the wrong thing in the Baby Wyvern quest (BGQE) in Nashkell, and a lot of Amnish soldiers started attacking him. He fled, but Nashkell may be off-limits for the time being... I also don't know whether killing them will hurt by reputation and/or make the other soldiers also go hostile, which really would mess up the game. Either way, he's not capable of it yet, so I suppose the best solution will be simply to avoid the area (with the exception perhaps of the Brage quest) for the time being.

Syroluin was sent by wizard Shandalar to Ice Island. He cleared his way to exit, defeated current proprietor of Shandalar’s cloak and returned to Ulgoth’s Beard.
Next, Syroluin was recruited by Mendas to explore some unknown island. Syroluin completed all quests available on the island, cleared Balduran’s ship from monsters, and killed greater wolfwere Karoug.

Unfortunately, he was also forced to kill Kaishas Gan and Mendas. All fights were surprisingly easy, thanks to Mirror Image, Haste and bastard sword vs. Shapeshifters.Syroluin is currently traveling to Durlag’s Tower.

Desreta and Vay-ya almost had me, but with the caster prone I'm able to finish the fighter (with 1hp remaining). The entrophy Krap was very appropriate.
The maulers of undermountain want to fight dirty. Done, but I miss Arlin with my backstab. My snares wound Gretek and kill Caturak and Nader. My next backstab poisons Wilf, interrupting his spell and sending him outside. I can't hide as Pargus is closing in. He mirror images and summons a worg, then casts horror which I fail to save (this has to be game over). Three acid arrows land, but the worg and Gretek can't catch me. I recover, gulp a blue potion and rush upstairs, fail to hide and glug a second potion. I run through some luxury rooms while a guard kills the worg.
Gretek is following me so I continue, with the guard chasing me too. A second guard is downstairs as is Pargus. A third blue potion helps against a Larlach, then I run into Arlin. He starts to cast but I run him through with my dagger.

I get another Larlach before I hide again, Pargus kills Turpin so I PB him to the floor as Gorpal Hind kills a guard. Nobody is moving so I look around and spot Gretek standing in a corner facing the wall. Dunce.

Wilf is outside and jumps out of his armour as I backstab him.
(not a good session, too many risks. A lot of fun though).
