After my sorceror came to a sticky end in BG2 I've decided to go to the other end of the spectrum and see if I can get a solo wizard slayer through BG1.

Thus far Biffo the halfling has had no alarms:
- killed Firebead in Candlekeep (level 2).
- pacified Marl (level 3).
- exterminated spiders, returned letter to Mirianne, returned sword to Perdue (level 4).
- evicted Neira, rescued boy from pet wyvern, exploded an ogre, found a dog, cleared Zal & Vax (level 5).

Biffo the wizard slayer update 2:
- taught Sendai & co a lesson.
- removed sirenes and flesh golems guarding constitution tome (level 6).
- dealt with caravan bandits, ogre with belts, Tarnesh and returned Landrin's goods.
- cleared an ankheg nest and fertilised the surrounding fields with crushed ankheg shell.
- returned a bowl to Tenya.
- cleared a plague of zombies (though the farmer wasn't at all grateful).
- successfully got Melicamp raised.
- got a better sword from Zargal & co (level 7).
- eventually dealt with Bassilus (didn't seem to be able to interrupt or shut down his spells and had to leave map 3 times before managing to stun him with darts).
- Silke never got a spell off.
- doubled slime population in Beregost.
- cleared wolf pack from temple area.

There are some duergar in the Nashkel mines, that Biffo will be unable to avoid, that are likely to be a stern test - hence he is trying to maximise his abilities before taking them on.

Good luck Grond0! And wow you've gotten pretty far considering how recent your sorcerer run ended.

Amazing what you can do playing double-speed solo - at least when the family's awayPosted Image.

Biffo the wizard slayer update 3:
- used green protection from petrification to take on the basilisk area.  For the first time Biffo chose to risk saving against a spell when Mutamin threw in a chromatic orb, as if he had left the area his only protection from petrification would have lapsed.  He would only have failed with a 1 so I thought it was an acceptable risk.  The party there were also taken out, though Biffo did have to jump between areas several times to do this as, like Bassilus, the cleric's spells were uninterruptable.  Eventually Biffo used the money from equipment already found to buy the horn of Kazgoroth - the 3 round protection offered by this was just long enough.
- cleared the coast area, though Biffo had his second risky escape there.  He decided to finish off the last 2 of a group of 3 sirenes by hand, but I had forgotten that the SCS sirenes can confuse on touch.  Fortunately the sirenes do little hand-to-hand damage and needed an 18 to hit and Biffo managed to kill both of them while confused - that also gave him level 8.
- although no more levels were available I decided I still wanted Biffo to have the hand of Kazgoroth to boost spell saving throws, so needed to do some more adventuring to raise cash.  Helped Drizzt with some gnolls and killed the party there and a group of half-ogres.  Waylaid a traveller to take his fur-lined boots - recovered that reputation loss by returning the body of a farmer's son, reporting back to Bjornin and returning Joia's ring (failed to save a cow).  That provided enough money for the hand, so next up will be the Nashkel mines.  Save vs spells is still only 5, but the best Biffo can do (at least without using mod items).

Biffo the wizard slayer update 4
- in the Nashkel mines Biffo's first real challenge was the duergar - Gorken's potions of speed and damage of 30+ per hit several times a round make him particularly dangerous, as well as the 2 clerics.  Biffo tried jumping back and forward between levels a few times, in an attempt to use darts of stunning, but without success.  He eventually rested just because he was tired, but fortunately this made Gorken leave the level exit slightly and Biffo made good use of the opportunity to stun him.  The fighter and thief went the same way, while both clerics spells could be interrupted by damage (and were).
- Biffo worked through all the kobolds to leave the shaman exposed.  He made the typical mistake of casting mirror image first and didn't get another spell off under the hail of darts.  Mulahey saved several times, but was stunned eventually, while Nimbul failed at the first attempt.  Didn't bother with darts of stunning with Tranzig, but just the standard variety as the supply of these is limited.
- at the bandit camp the inhabitants of the main tent decided to stay inside, while Biffo worked his way through those outside.  Only problem occurred because I had forgotten that Dark Horizons introduces an ogre mage into the area and he cast a charm person before I realised he was there, which Biffo had to save against.  The main tent itself was no problem with the mage immediately being targeted leaving the others pretty helpless.
- back at the Friendly Arm Inn, to sell equipment and replace the 30 or so healing potions used at the bandit camp, Biffo was accosted by Najara and Vallius.  Again this was a lengthy battle as Biffo could only hit Najara with a critical so did a lot of running and shooting on her.  Then against Vallius Biffo initially jumped maps a few times to avoid spells, but Vallius's spells regenerated when she was out of sight so Biffo used the horn of Kazgoroth to protect against hold person and just let the flame strikes and various summoning spells trigger while she used run and shoot tactics.

Next up is the cloakwood and tangling with the spider menace.

Quick update. I don't think I mentioned that Erthallin retreived Gurke's cloak - Tasloi are a nuisance, but at his level not really a threat. Entangle, Charm, Barkskin and Flame Blade proved more than sufficient to wear them down in ones and twos; they did get a couple of hits off but I was able to Cure those, and Larloch's helped.

Erthallin then journeyed west and found Brage, whom he took back to Nashkel (1k XP, 1k gp and +1 reputation). Fearful of the Amnish soldiers from last time, I headed south to leave the map, and baby-sat some children (BGQE) on the way for another 300 XP and +1 retputation.

Thanks to Nalin and Brage, Erthallin is now no longer poor. However, he wouldn't be able to use any better equipment until he gets his fighter levels back, really, so I'm just going to try and do a few more side-quests before anything else. I should think Entangle will be enough for things like the Half-Ogres and suchlike.

Arghain and his Half-Ogre band provided sufficient XP for Erthallin to reach L4 and complete his dual-classing.

Erthallin Neutral Good Fighter 3 -> Druid 4
Str 15 Dex 16 Con 15 Wis 17 Int 9 Cha 15+2
HP: 30
Favourite weapon: Dart
Favourite spell: Entangle
Small Swords ***   Large Swords **
Blunt Weapons *    Missile Weapons *   Spears *

I've decided I like the Fighter 3 -> Druid dual. Erthallin just got another proficiency point from Druid, meaning he is now proficient in every weapon he can use. Despite his mediocre physical attributes, he has a respectable THAC0 of 14 with Throwing Daggers and 11 with his Flame Blade, the weapons I expect he'll be using for some time to come (then a Scimitar when he gets one, and hopefully eventually the Dagger of Venom). His health is also a lot better than it would be if he were a pure Druid (though a full 8+1 roll at L4 was actually better than his mediocre rolls when gaining Fighter levels), with is a big bonus in a no-reload run.

My intention now if to pick up a little bit of support and then move on to the mines. However, if I wait until he's L3/5, I should get NPCs in their highest-level incarnation. That said, I was thinking of taking some liberties with the NPCs anyway (I would have made a custom party if my multiplayer was working) so I might pick up one now and another later.

@the fred: You say your multi-player wasn't working? Are you using Vista or Windows 7? What I've found even on my system is I need to Alt+enter (which toggles from windowed mode and full screen) so that I am in windowed mode when getting the game started. Then once I am in the game world, you can then switch to full screen without further difficulty. For some odd reason BG crashes in multi-player when getting it setup if in full screen.

Yes, I had heard something about windowed mode somewhere but never really tried it out. Alt + Enter worked just fine, it actually loads multiplayer for some reason. Maybe next time I'll play a fully home-made party, then, though I admit I like to solo the start to level quickly and then pick up the NPCs with more XP later. I also prefer the personality of the default NPCs, it's just that there are some race and class combinations which aren't available (no Cleric/Rangers, say, and there are a lot of dual-classes you could do).

Speaking of class combinations, why oh why aren't there any fighter/mages NPCs? One of most powerful and flexible classes in existence (surely the NPCs are not ALL stupid about it's capabilities). Even though Edwin is a powerful mage, a fighter/mage would OWN him. Granted, who knows that kind of personality is a fighter/mage, but I sure would love to have one in my BG 1 and BG 2 parties. So if I do want one, I have to multi-player or be one myself. Well guess there a mods out there too, heard of Khalid being a fighter/mage in a mod. But still would nice to have one right out of the box.

Biffo the wizard slayer update 5:
- luckily the only ambush travelling on the way to the second cloakwood area was by a lone ghast (right from the beginning of the run I thought that a spider ambush here was a likely cause of death).  On arrival Biffo was greeted by several phase spiders, but they are too slow to be much of a threat.  He then carefully explored forward making sure to kill the local wildlife before triggering any traps.  At the spider lodge a horde attacked him, but only the 4 giant spiders posed a threat (with their web attack).  The plan was to try and separate all the attackers, particularly the giant spiders as I was fairly confident that Biffo could survive being webbed if only attacked by 1 spider at a time.  This worked well - the only spider to successfully web him was the first and Biffo saved against all the poison attacks and was less than half hits down when he freed himself.
- with spiders' bane in hand Biffo no longer feared ambushes, so of course there were no more on the way to the mines.  He avoided encounters - the only fight was with a group of black talons blocking the road, one of whom seemed aggrieved that Biffo was defending himself.
- on arrival at the mines Biffo saw an arch-druid coming to talk to him.  Afraid this would end in a fight Biffo led him, together with a group of guards, all the way round the other side of the map and lost them there.  Then he took on the party there.  Drasus found his weapon was cursed and flailed with it ineffectually while he waited to be killed.  Rezdan then appeared from invisibility and got a chaos spell off, forcing Biffo to jump map areas - when he came back he quickly stunned Rezdan and finished him off.  Genthore was doing quite a bit of damage hand to hand, so Biffo spent a while finishing him off with run and shoot tactics.  Kysus was the last to go - also quickly stunned.  There were still a fair number of black talons in the way and these caused quite a lot of damage, although by jumping in and out of buildings Biffo was able to stop them ganging up and was never in any danger.  Also blocking the mine entrance was Tytus with a few more guards.  He has multiple attacks per round for about 30 per hit so Biffo couldn't afford to take any chances with him and jumped in and out of areas until he got a successful stun - in fact needed to do this twice as Tytus has nearly 200 HP.
- in the mine the first challenge was getting past Hareishan and his guards.  Biffo stayed at the level entrance to have an escape handy and so that only 2 guards at once were able to attack him.  This worked well and he had the bonus of stunning Hareishan as soon as he appeared from invisibility before he got a spell off.  Even so, taking some damage was inevitable and by the time Biffo had cleared the path he had used all of the 50 basic healing potions he'd brought with him on the trip into the Cloakwood.
- took the shortest route through the next level and went down to confont Daveorn.  There Biffo read copies of green scrolls to protect against fire, cold, electricity, poison and magic and set about his work with a will.  The order of reading these scrolls was actually a mistake as reading protection from magic last cancelled all the others, while doing it the other way round would have been fine.  Rather than use more of his limited supply Biffo pushed on, but incurred a bit more damage from exploding arrows than he otherwise would have - fortunately Dark Sylvia missed her poison backstab.  By keeping mobile he minimised other damage and still had 4 of his original 8 extra-healing potions left when Daveorn fell
- there was still a group of Dark Horizons elven assassins blocking the bridge to Baldurs Gate.  I thought I might need to do some more map jumping here as, even with Biffo wearing boots of avoidance, I thought the elves might hit quite easily.  However, they chose not to use ranged attacks at all; this was presumably on the grounds that they had better to-hit rolls in melee, but the result was that Biffo used run and shoot tactics and killed them all comfortably.  He's now standing at the gates to the city.

I have the Khalid as a Fighter/Mage mod from the BG1 Tweak pack (the G3 one). It's quite good because it patches (apparently there are other versions, I think there is a Dudley one, but they overwrite). I've found it has a couple of minor bugs (it puts his robe in a cloak slot so you have to move it, and he once had a L3 spell flagged as a L1 spell, which I fixed with Sword Coast Keeper).

I have to say he was pretty awesome, though his more-powerful-than-usual-for-NPCs gear helped. I also got him killed a bit forgetting he was squishier than he used to be, but with Mirror Image and Stinking Cloud and things he was able to solo certain battles himself (I think he was the main player in the fight with the DH Duergar).

Anyway, Erthallin has cleared the other group of Half-Ogres and been rewarded with Bjornin's shield. Between that and some chain mail I forgot he'd stashed, his base AC is now a respectable 0. He's also managed to accrue a decent amount of XP, so it won't actually be long until he's L3/5 (I think I am about halfway there, so 2-3k off). Right now he's just north of the Gnoll stronghold, dealing with a (faster) bear problem, but I think that'll have to wait for another day.

You could always use swordcoastkeeper to change Edwin or others of the existing NPCs even if you didn't want to use mods such as the one The Fred describes.

Perhaps I'm not making myself clear. I already have a number of ways to get a fighter/mage in my party. But I want to see a fighter/mage NPC - that is, dialog for an NPC that somehow has both martial tendencies of fighters and cerebral like a mage. In other words, would actually like to meet a personality that chose that path, not simply a class change.

And Sarevok is down. It was a fun run overall, made you think a litle different than a normal run, and the hardest part for me was the cloakwood spider area, have always hated the web traps with the spiders combo.

Thinking about continue with the same party in BG 2 but skip the no reload part since i have only finished BG 2 once, and going to get my ass kicked a few times, going to continue with it though until it happens.

Grats on taking down Sarevok Obvlionenss. If you are interested in posting your adventure you can post in the minimal reload thread in the BG 2 forum, it doesn't matter if you reload there.

After a LONG weekend I’ve made it to Baldur's Gate with out getting any one (permanently) killed. The bad news is this conspiracy goes right to the top and my current party needs more firepower to tackle the problems we face.

How fortunate for me that this city has a lot of magic types keen to donate their magic wands to our worthy cause.

Biffo the wizard slayer final update:
Biffo's run came to an end in a very annoying fashion. He disposed of the Iron Throne party pretty easily and made his way through the catacombs with protection from magic scroll up. I thought this would protect him from basilisk gaze, but was wrong again! Funnily enough the same basilisks ended my last wizard slayer attempt; on that occasion my tactic was to run past them, but I was caught out when they followed me out of the catacombs far quicker than they should have been able to. Having experimented after that I had confirmed that running past them was a viable tactic, but it needs precise timing and I hadn't realised I needed it this time - which was costly. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Erthallin:

o Killed the mountain bear and received a pair of expensive-looking boots.
o Defeated Gnarl and Hairtooth near the Gnoll Stronghold
o Raided an Xvart cave for a magical tome.
o Had the tome identified by Thalantyr and used it to gain a Cha of 18 (+2)!

Erthallin is also only about 500 XP away from that coveted L3/5. I'm thinking I will just wander around a little until he achieves it through kill XP.

Bad luck, Grond. Basilisks can be a damn pain without PfP or Animate Dead.
